At Adak I noted the recon of 3xAKE in port and the west move of the bombard TF from Umnak....so I dropped an 8plane B24 port strike on Adak in the upcoming combat report.  Waiting for the results. I bet the three divisions at Umnak wish they had a boat to get off that island.

I was correct about the jap fleet showing up at Adak.  But my b24s did not fly.  I figure because they are part of 7th AF operating in Eleventh AF area. I did not change orders...So we see of a one turn delay in order execution is caused by conflicting commands.

I must be doing something right...did not even realize it.  I just like a good fight.
From RA70 Development thread.
Another interesting Quote:
quote:

FatR
3)Players' greater risk tolerance, loss tolerance and willingness to outright sacrifice troops, ships and planes, compared to RL planners. Affects the Japanese side too, as many players do not mind expending assets that will be useless late in the war anyway, but mostly impacts how the Allies are willing to act, compared to RL.
Nothing really can be done about this aspect, except outsmarting and punishing one's opponent for his aggressiveness.

I wonder what FatR was talking about. Maybe the early loss of all the p40/hurricanes or the deployment of ground troops into andamans....or the sacrifice of non escorted AKs into little andaman.

Good news here about the Port Blair Invasion, that should be nowhere near enough to be able to take it, I guess that at least 2000AV will be needed, plus the massive flak there should make it impossible for FatR to close the airfield, meaning that forts can be easily rebuilt.

FatR has had a lot of troops preparing for false locations since the start of the war. I was suspecting a Russian attack in late January 1942, I am fairly certain that you can rule that out. Certainly the Japanese army airforce losses have been so heavy that he wouldnt be able to cope for long in an aerial battle of attrition. My guess is that the ships spotted near the West coast are AMCs or small task forces of just a light cruiser and a destroyer.

Great news about the Hiyo! I hope you have a lot of other submarines around the area.

Port Blair, the japs are back w/ more troops. Afraid to overcommit into Burma because of 25th ija division prep for Chittachong. If PB falls then the IJN will roam freely in the Bay of Bengal. Imp Gds div was at lashio but pulled back when the Indain div took Swebo...

Should I press hard in Burma?

Are the japs a real threat to land at Chit/Burma rear in late 42?

You're going to have to fight him somewhere, really just a question of where isn't it?
Any particular reason why PB is better/worse place to fight than an overland campaign in burma?

Yes Pat I agree. why not both...in the combat replay looks like the topsy's are eaten by Flak as they make a paradrop....

Pat, would it be wise to fly a division into PB from Little andaman??

Another option is the chindit brigades which arrive in about 5 days.

Red, I'm too current on your opponent's AAR to offer any specific advice in yours without it being tainted :(.

On a totally unrelated note, this is one of the most interesting AARs going because the Port Blair gambit is so unusual. I'm having a blast watching the game play out.

It is disappointing to see a fort reduction in a 1to2 attack.  The electric engineers are present.

It's normal. You inflicted a good amount of casualties. Hopefully they took a lot of disruption too.

So are you bringing more guys in? Or even can you?

Casualties:
Burma div=about20%
17th Indian=about10%
2xarmor regiments=about3/4%

I can fly in more troops but the japs have got a large CAP presence from the KB next hex that intercepted my pby's last turn.
I had about 5 pt boats that disrupted the shore bombardment .   I will have 2 this next turn.  Hopefully the IJN is running out of ammo and will need a refil.
Also about 15 HB will make a run at 16000 ft each turn......I can bring them in lower...I forgot to look at the combat report to see if FatR landed any AA units.

Japanese Assault Value = 2631
Japanese ground losses:
3035 casualties reported
Squads: 6 destroyed, 261 disabled or 10% of attacking force that will not recover.
Defending force 25706 troops, 305 guns, 644 vehicles, Assault Value = 859

Combat modifiers

Non Combat: 5 destroyed, 108 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 28 disabled
Vehicles lost 47 (1 destroyed, 46 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
1340 casualties reported
Squads: 3 destroyed, 39 disabled
Defending force 25706 troops, 305 guns, 644 vehicles, Assault Value = 859 or 5% of total combat value but I lost a fort level.
So next turn I will have a pure 800 AV and IJA will have about 2000AV. I am in a jungle(x2) w/ level 4 fort. The 1st raiding regiment is still available. 2nd was dropped at PB this turn and the chinese pushed the 3rd and 4th raiders into the woods.

Note the 2nd para has a AV of 3 so I figure they are disrupted real bad. If the IJN drops another para regiment then that will negate my jungle advantage. So then my defense is 4x my AV plus my AV or 4000 then adjusted down for his naval gunfire. He may have a 1 to 1 if he does drop the para regiment...The Para regiments are critical to his breaking my nut.(and FatR probably made a real bad mistake using two of them in china...)

Yubari, if u have any advise I need it now...

What is the effect of my loss of more support troops that FatR?  Also it appears that about 1/3rd of my non armor vehicles have been disabled but all the jap armor is disabled.

Heavens, this is a really exciting battle now.

I think that you should go hard into Burma. When I left the game I estimated that there were about 700AV of troops there, but of course he might have brought up the Thai units in the no house rules game. Even if he has, it is an amount of force that wont be able to hold against a large allied attack. I would be willing to wager that the planning unit for Chittagong is a diversion, FatR has done a lot of that before. Chittagong has a fortress unit and a good level of forts? 2 divisions should be more than enough to hold it, Japan has used 7 divisions in Hawaii, plus another 5 at Port Blair, there cant be much left now.
Finally, Japanese ground units in open terrain against 4 engine bombers tend not to survive so well, even if he does land there then I would send every heavy bomber against them, disruption will go sky high in less than a week.

That is a large force at Port Blair, but I think that you should have enough to hold, casualties were more than 4 to 1 for the allies, and the Japanese units will recover a lot less quickly. In addition the huge flak over Port Blair should make it impossible to close the airfield, it will be almost impossible for FatR to get the forts down to 0 and keep them there. Get airlifting in as many troops as possible, and keep subs searching for the Japanese carriers.

The orders are in the mail.

SCTFs have been assigned to hit 2 of the four IJ bases around Hawaii.

Transport screens are set to the west for early warning of CV intervention.

All surface Tfs have been able to get w/in search range w/ only one Tf detected last turn.  2 from the north, four from the south.
My objectives are:
1.  Shut down the airfields
a. 2x CA TF, one each from the north and south are set to shell Lahani at 15000yrds AND SET TO PATROL ON SITE TO ATTRACT AVAL AIR ATTACK.
B. One CA TF will shell Kona.
C. One BB TF commanded by Ching Willis (80agression) will cover intercept of expected jap CL TF.
d. 2 more BB TFs are in the area next turn for further adventure.
2.  Destroy the IJ surface fleet at Hawaii.
3.  Resupply Pearl w/ 150000 supply.
4.  Restock pearl w/ 150 fighters then
5.  LBA the japs.

Plan seems to be progressing. Question to readers is :
Should the bombardment TFs be set to range 0 or range 15?

Mind you- not that I'm saying a range of 15 is the way to go- but if you go in too close your ships will fire every gun they've got- including AA. There's been a thread about it recently and Michaelm mentioned that one of the main reasons bombardment range was put in the game was to give the player the option of standing off their ships to avoid them depleting their AA ammo during bombardment missions.

Thanks Daniel....
We are wearing each other out. FatR may have the upper hand w/ his betties. But this upcoming turn I am sitting on all his airfields w/ bombardment groups, plus 2 extra at pearl...the only question I have is how well fortified is IJAAF.

FatR found a trans TF exactly as I was splitting the transports up into different hexes and probably killed every one of them w/ the Fuso BG about 6 hexes south of pearl. the HYUGO IS REPORTED SUNK..ALSO TWO OF MY FLEET CAs.
We have a few more surprises for FatR this next turn also. Opsec is in effect.

Mission objectives --pearl:

quote:

1. Shut down the airfieldsmarginal
a. 2x CA TF, one each from the north and south are set to shell Lahani at 15000yrds AND SET TO PATROL ON SITE TO ATTRACT AVAL AIR ATTACK.
B. One CA TF will shell Kona.--failed
C. One BB TF commanded by Ching Willis (80agression) will cover intercept of expected jap CL TF.failed
d. 2 more BB TFs are in the area next turn for further adventure.
2. Destroy the IJ surface fleet at Hawaii.sucess
3. Resupply Pearl w/ 150000 supply.failed
4. Restock pearl w/ 150 fighters thenfailed
5. LBA the japs.failed

Probably a bad Idea. Did garantee no auto victory in 42.

Lessons learned--
1. to take back hawaii I will need fleet CV cover.
2. Seems slow BBs attract betties.
3. Any ships w/ speed 30 cause betties a hard time getting a hit.
4. Tfs not in position at start of senario. Go ahead was given because of spotted TFs.
5. Pts where 2 days late to the game and should have been a game changer as they could have followed a bombardment TF to mission and provided surface interdictive cover.
