Hmmm ... it seems that EA is taking some flak for sneaking in a rootkit in (disc versions) of DA2 without telling the buyers.

Quick translation of a Russian joke:

Customer: Is it true that you give loans without collateral?
Bank Rep: Yes
Customer: But that is ludicrous! What if I dont pay you back?
Bank Rep: Then when you meet the Almighty you will be very embarrassed.
Customer: Bah! When is that going to happen.
Bank Rep: Well, lets say you dont pay by the 5th, you'll meet him on the 6th....

My dad is a math professor. I understand the concept of logarithmic. 10 times is exactly right. Sheeeeeeesh!!!

Those poor people. That is devastating. That's twice as powerful as the Indonesian quakes from a few years ago.

If you're talking about the one that erupted in the Indian Ocean and killed 200,000 people a few years back, that was a 9.1.

Either way, bedtime... Laundry day tomorrow. Woo. Hoo.

Yes, I was referring to that one. Guess the memory is getting bad in my old age. Pretty similar quakes then....sad.

Started Dragon Age II. It's early days yet, but the story seems very complicated.

Bought it yesterday, started it up... BUT, I need a new system. Without a dual core CPU whenever you reach an autosave point the game goes into a continuous loop trying to save. I guess sometimes in the next few weeks I'll have to put together a new machine...

Well, that's why I have an i7.

Does DA2 really need that much more processing power than the original? The original DA ran fine on my ****e machine.

Apparently, yes... well, maybe not as far as Terminus has gone, but at least a dual core.

I have Dragon Age on the machine that DA2 is freezing up on - but only while saving. It was running pretty nice going through the opening act but when it was time to move on to the next area it went into the continuous loop while autosaving - and I had no option to save at all up to that point, though I understand from the thread on their forum that is also part of the same problem with single core CPUs and DA2.

DA ran beautifully on my machine, but DA2 apparently needs at least a dual core setup.

Man, prayers for the pacific.....that's a MASSIVE quake. Doesn't Richter only go to 9?

Agreed. And no, the Richter scale is a normal logaritmic scale so could (theoretically) go even higher. Highest magnitude earthquake that they've measured was a 9.5 in Chile 1960.

Translated into non-geek: it's an open-ended scale.

Right. And for every 1.0 the magnitude goes up, the shaking amplitude doubles.

Yeah. I think that's right: T(s) for the earthquake technogeeks. However, a common misconception is that this relates to power of the quake. That's incorrect. For every 1.0 increase in the Richter scale amplitude change, the power released is about 26x. an 8.8-8.9 is a big quake, it's powerful and, depending on the epicenter, plenty destructive. Poor Hokkaido.

Sorry if I hurt you Nik. It might have been a little insensitive of me to start talking about that given that I know of your current situation. My bad.

Your old rig sounds like mine. It's a Intel Quad 6850 Extreme running at 3.66 GHz. GTS 8800 Gfx card. Only went for 4GB RAM as I run 32 bits XP.

Hope that things will work out for you so you can build that new rig. In the meantime, however, a 17" MacBook is not a too shabby substitute in by books at least

Not at all. I've accepted the situation and am trying to look forward to better things at this point, as well as keeping busy......for example, i've completed a Grand campaign scenario for may 1942 AE and i may even have a couple interviews lining up if things go well. (still waiting to see)

Yes....my system is almost exactly that only i went with a mid-line Core2 Quad (IIRC....a 3860 or something similar) vs. the extreme. Intel almost snared me into paying $700 more for it but after looking at the benchmarks at Tom's Hardware i figured i'd never notice the slight performance increase....certainly not enough to justify 1100$ vs. 400$ for the CPU!!!! (Intel is doing the same with the i7....their 'extreme' version is 1100.00 while a good midline i7 is only 300-400$) Originally it was 4GB running 32bit Vista but after upgrading to Win7 64 i added 4 more Gigs. She was a sweet rig......till the ASUS "CPU INIT" bug hit, leaving me with nothing but spare parts.

I'll never buy ASUS again. MSI from here on out.

I have build (and fixed/repaired) hundreds of PC's in span of the 15+ years (from 386SX to new i7)...

I almost exclusively always use Asus motherboards!

Meanwhile in Sweden, the winter vomiting disease keeps a firm hold of the Panzerjaeger-family.

It started out with the youngest this Tuesday, then it moved on to me and the 3-yrold the night between Thursday and Friday, and now the latest victim has been claimed as my Fiancee is completely knocked out right now.

Oh Bliss

Speaking of toys, I got a PS3 today. I think I'm getting a little overexcited with the money...

If I were you, I'd be more worried about getting overly excited about scantily clad video game witches.

In Dragon Age II, the primary "scantily clad video game witch" is the player character's sister, so... There's going to be a scantily clad video game female pirate captain" at one point, though.

Well... I learned what the problem with DA2 is. The game was designed to run on one of your CPU cores while any save was handled by the other core (if I am using the terminology correctly). Now the specs listed for the game on the retail box clearly stated that the minimum required system is a dual core 1.8 Ghz. Since my system is an older Athlon single core 3.8 Ghz system I thought that I would attempt it. However, it was unable to save.

Fortunately for me, many systems that use multicore CPUs are apparently setup in BIOS to run as a single core (I'm not positive about this, but I heard somewhere that XP cannot take advantage of dual core systems so it works this way), so a lot of people were experiencing the same problem that I am. So Bioware just released a patch to allow single core users (and those whose multicore systems work in single core mode) to save the game. I just finished patching the game but haven't started it up to see if it works. Crossing my fingers...

Fast Food | Capitol Hill, Seattle, WA, USA

(At closing time I mop the back lobby, the area farthest from the door and counter. This is so we don’t have to do it after we close and can leave faster. There are two customers, a mother and her teenage son, in the back lobby.)

Me: “Just to let you know, after I finish wiping all the unoccupied tables I’ll be sweeping and mopping the floor. If you’re still here by then, the floor will be a little slippery when you stand up. I just wanted to let you know to be careful.”

Customer: “I have asthma, and a lot of allergies. If you sweep back here while I’m here, I’ll have an asthma attack. Can’t you do it after you close?”

Me: *smiling* “I have to clean the area now, but I’ll start on the other side of the back lobby.”

(I finish sweeping the other section of the back lobby. I avoid the corner in which she and her son are sitting.)

Customer, to her son: “She didn’t even listen to me! I’m going outside!”

Me: “Ma’am, are you going to be all right? There’s a hospital right across the street. I’m sure they’d be able to help you if you’re having an asthma attack.”

Customer: “No! I’m going outside to smoke!”

Had something similar happen to me years ago. idiot

yep....its probably one of the most unknown/unused features of your typical O/S from XP on up. 99% of software runs fine with all cores enabled by default but you can for windows go into msconfig (use the RUN command and type that) and go to the BOOT tab and hit advanced options....you can select the # of cores you want the system to start up using.

AE had some core issues too.....there's a switch for it but the exact escapes me....i needed to use it for my defunct quad as after a couple turns the menu popups would slow to a crawl on the default settings.

speaking of computer nightmares.....

at the place i'm housesitting for.....their computer (and AMD dual core 2.7Ghz with 4Gigs of RAM, running Vista64) has so many background programs running that even with just Internet Explorer up.....there are 92 processes running and only 49% physical memory available.

As a comparison.....to have your rig, gaming or otherwise, be at it's best for running a powerful program, you want to absolutely minimize background programs and conserve resources.....on average my machines run with 30-32 processes or less and 80+% physical memory available......even the bloated workstations at work running XP and loaded down with background programs and security stuff average 75 processes after bootup and running of essential company apps)

This sloth of a machine takes 10+ minutes to fully boot up and finish running all it's checks and updates.....if you try to run the browser before that....it hangs and freezes for up to 10+ more minutes. ACK! Doesn't help either that Vista is a resource hog....its primary flaw thankfully addressed with Win7.

If they wanted me to speed up this system the first thing i'd do is wipe it clean and reinstall. Probably would be easiest!
