For those AT veterans who haven't tried the new random scenarios yet:

It only takes several light tanks, or several fighter squadrons, to completely exhaust all of your starting oil. Trying to move an HQ that has a lot of trucks or halftracks in it will likewise rapidly deplete reserves. It seems like strategy is much more biased towards either using a single spearhead force to drive at critical points while using lots of militia, rifles and flak guns to secure the rear, or building up for a sudden offensive that lasts about 2 to 3 turns intended to completely smash the enemy. It is also critical to upgrade existing oil wells - which then requires a tradeoff between being able to move things to the front via building railroads, and having enough oil.

This game is great! It is amazing how the game mechanics and map design are sufficient to enforce a good deal of realism, even for random maps!

Now you tell me! LOL

You're absolutely right, one moment you're thinking "oh cool look at my panzers/fighters they're so awesome nothing can stop them" LOL. Next moment you're thinking, dam' I really need those oilwells in Baku/Ploesti because my planes can't fly and my tankerboyz can't move anywhere anymore.
So then instead of kicking the butt of the enemies units, you really go for the Oilwells... I need that OIL!.
Well done Vic!

It sort of reminds me of CIV I-II where you got sometimes at CIV levels to make trains/tanks... only to discover that the oilwells all were in someone elses territory

I'm 99% sure that resources only gave plot bonuses and weren't modeled realistically until civ 3. And there were no trains.. only rails which did nothing but make movement free ;)

In my first game I had a unit of 40 divebombers.  I kicked off my Grand Offensive by using them to blast a hole for my armor to pour through.  Alas, they used all the fuel, so my armor just sat there looking at the hole.

Fuel is a wonderful addition to the game that adds layers of strategy with only a minimal amount of added complexity.

omg so right!  I had come up with a few doctrines while at a stalemate with me neighbors.  Then I came up with a good idea for a light tank/armored car spearhead to crack open a hole in the line and pour infantry through it.  After 3 nice bombing runs I got the hole open and no breakthrough.  This was well before I knew anything about upgrading oil wells so my hole was all for not.

Tough game if you don't plan well ahead.  Also, made for an awesome strategy when I was about to land infantry behind my enemies lines to capture oil wells as they were trying to make a break through.  Stopped them completely dead in their tracks in two turns allowing me full envelopment of their armored units, complete destruction.  Great strategy for sure

The addition of oil and raw materials to the random game has really changed playability, (ie. improved it).
I've been juggling back and forth between enough oil and not enough raw materials, to too much raw materials not enough oil. It also greatly effects my choice of strategic targets - do I go after cities and deprive my enemy of the ability to build infantry, or capture his resources so I can build tanks, planes, & ships?....

Note that Vic just confirmed a bug that makes at least trucks use twice as mujch fuel if you travel all at once versus one hex at a time . So until the patch comes out, I guess I will move my gas guzzlers one hex at a time...

I'm finding this out the hard way. I'm currently playtesting my hypothetical Indochina scenario and have built up my fuel supplies as well as taking the time to mass Thai forces along the Indochina border and have finally launched my offensive and after conducting bomber strikes, artillery strikes and 3 battles I have used up half my fuel stockpile. Vic has outdone himself this time and I'm a happy camper.

Fighter intersception cost fuel right? Then what is keeping me from sending one cheap levelbomer at the time to the limit of the interception range of the fighters until all of the enemys massive airforce is neutralized by simple lack of fuel?

Interception either doesn't use fuel, or uses far less fuel. There was a note on this in the wiki.

It is only affected by production expenses. I've only seen it when building missles.
