OK - my wife just went to a gun safety class- she insists that the correct way (as taught by the teacher) to shoot a pistol is NOT to use your index finger to pull the trigger, but rather to use the middle finger... i told her that if you happened to be using a heavy duty revolver (i.e. .454 Casull or similar high-powered weapon), you would likely lose your fingers since the gas jets out of the cylinder and could literally sever a digit (this is no joke).

So, she insisted i check this out: so i showed her some videos on "the correct way to shoot a pistol" - and they used the index finger to pull the trigger... She still insisted it was wrong.

i then offered to check the Thread, as many of you have been officially trained in the use to firearms...

So - what finger do you use to fire a pistol (as trained)?

Two things. I once had an instructor who used his middle finger because the last knuckle or so on his index finger had been shot away. He trained intensively.

Second, I heard that there is some really dumb-ass method that someone was trying to promote whereby you use your middle finger for the trigger and point your index finger along the frame. The notion being that it will naturally point at your target more quickly. BS. (There are legitimate "Point Shooting" methods that do not involve using the sights but that nonsense is not one of them.)

It's good that you intervene - if she ever really needs to use a gun, crap like that might get her killed.

The middle finger is used for something entirely different.

For the moment, I'm just sprucing up my resumé and generally looking around. Today is the release of L.A. Noire and there's a three-day weekend, so that's my immediate future right there...

Index finger.

My father-in-law uses the middle but only because he is missing most of his index finger. Kept him out of Korea.

They do seem to like the gun myths. Not sure I believe all their findings though.

Pretty sure this is where i first heard of it... i went to the trouble to look up the pictures on the web, and they made much more of an impression than the "chicken finger" on Mythbusters ... until you reminded me of it, i had forgotten the Mythbusters episode.

i think the safety instructor is one of the people promoting the "index finger along the frame"... in her defense, she is supposed to a champion pistol expert. My wife says it is supposed to be something "recent", so maybe we are all Neadert(h)als... i will stick with using my index finger to pull the trigger, thank you.

Teaching that to someone who already knows how to shoot is one thing. They can try it out and train intensively to learn it or not. There are lots of fads that come and go. Teaching it to someone new to shooting as "the correct way" in a basic safety class is reprehensible. She is pushing her own favorite fringe technique to the detriment of her student (ie your wife).

That was my opinion - i told my wife it wasn't accepted and could be dangerous... she thought i wasn't correct, but agreed to "Thread Mediation" - she seems ok with the idea that the index finger is correct when i showed her the shooting videos, and the collective opinion of the Thread members...

BTW - she is an excellent shot with a pistol, and learned to shoot with her index finger.

Evening tithe... Apparently the index finger is really good for poking furry little animals with claws also.

Kristian, how many games you own and how many of those you play regularly?

Just curious BTW (I think I have just about 20+ tactical / strategic / simulations in about 20 years)...
