Combat

Allied aircraft struck Myitkyina doing heavy damage to the base and inflicting light casualties to the ground troops. Many secondary explosions were seen.

The Maizuru 2nd SNLF at Wake Island was heavily hammered by the USN's air assets. Losses were placed at heavy and no American planes were damaged. The 127th IJN Base Force was simultaneously attacked and had moderate casualties and all of the Navy's planes departed safely. Wake then witnessed mop up operations that caused heavy Japanese and light American losses. The Army troops are amazed that the Japanese refuse to surrender and are fighting on despite having no food or water.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the river crossing was raided by the Chinese in their B-25Js. The bombs were dropped wide of the mark and both sides had no casualties.

The 49th Chinese Corps about 21 miles from the road junction was attacked by 28 X Helen who inflicted light casualties on the Chinese troops. Chinese commanders are considering trying to spring a trap on these unescorted bombers tomorrow with their new P-40Ns. A Japanese bombardment at the road junction resulted in very light Chinese casualties.

At Sining the IJA continued to rain artillery shells on the Chinese defensive positions, causing very light casualties.

Bill and Phil bump into each other at HQs and both have been given the same word. Their ships are to prepare for departure, destination unknown at this time. They agree to meet later for dinner after they return to their ships and pass along the orders. Bill will leave things temporarily in Frank's able hands and Phil's skipper has already granted him the night off.

Captain Demesa has told his crew that they will be sailing soon and that means loading operations first. He doesn't know when or where, but he tells the crew to check the cranes and all other items needed to load the Palawan. He also tells them that tonight is the last night they can leave the ship without checking with the 1st Mate. The men look around and without a spoken word they all go to get ready to paint the town.

Pete walks into the hotel and and immediately goes into the office, where Sylvia is busy with ordering supplies. He clears his throat, she looks up and flies into his arm. They kiss and hold each other and he promises that the war is over for him and that from now on his adventures can come in their bedroom. She laughs and says that their friends will be wanting to see him so she's going to pass the word for them to come to the pub tonight.

The US created the 10th Fleet to fight U-boats.

Combat

IJN MSWs 33 miles from Rabaul pounced on the SS Guardfish, who suffered no damage.

At Wake Island the 53rd Naval Guard Unit was attacked by SBDs and sustained moderate losses. No planes were damaged. At almost the same time the Maizuru 2nd SNLF was bombed by SBDs and had heavy casualties. Again no planes were damaged. The mopping up of the Japanese troops continued and the Americans inflicted heavy losses while sustaining none themselves. The 53rd Naval Guard, 7th NLF, 125 IJN Base Force, 126 IJN Base Force and the 127 IJN Base Force units have ceased to exist due to attrition. The battle for Wake Island has ended. Allied commanders have decided to leave Marcus Island for another time due to the cost of taking Wake and the needs of Operation King.

VMF-222 patrols the skies over Wake Island and this is Stick's second mission on CAP. It's boring and he keeps telling himself to stay alert and scanning the sky. The last thing he wants is to get bounced and splashed. After landing he feels so tired and he wasn't even in combat, he thinks.

Pete wakes up and heads towards the kitchen for a late breakfast. They went through lots of spirits last night and a good time was had by all. Sylvia greets him with a smile and kiss and he thinks to himself that he really is a lucky guy and that he won't press it any more.

Troop movements continue in Australia in preparation for another go at the Japanese. More units will be thrown at the enemy this time around and the US promises even more troops to follow. London is mum.

Sandy got 3 new letters today and relates their contents to her father as he changes a differential on a truck. He'd prefer working on cars only, but turning away business in lean times would be stupid.

Cookie is busily overseeing an inventory of their food stocks for the impending voyage and Lucky is nosing around when he suddenly goes under a counter trying to get something. Sure enough he comes out with a rodent tail hanging from his mouth as he hastily leaves the galley for somewhere else with his kill.

Foreshadowing is a no brainer as the war is gradually heating up and death and destruction are the future. The AAR continues to run about 3 months behind the game.

Combat

The SS Herring attacked a heavily escorted tanker, but missed. She slipped away without detection. The report gave no position.

An air raid on Gili Gili by 48 X B-17E and 63 X B-24 D was greeted by 22 X Zero, 12 X Jack and 18 X Tony. The bombers kept their formations tight and managed to down 11 X Zero (1 damaged), 6 X Jack (another damaged) and 4 X Tony (10 damaged) but the fighters fiercely pressed home their attacks and destroyed 4 X B-17E (25 damaged) and 22 X B-24D (19 damaged). Damage to the airbase was reportedly moderate and ground casualties were light. A second attack a short time later was made by 109 X B-17E and 15 X B-24D and the Japanese CAP of 9 X Zero, 6 X Jack and 17 X Tony pounced on them downing 7 X B-17E (30 Damaged) and 2 X B-24D (11 damaged). The Bomber's defensive fire killed 5 X Zero, a Jack (4 damaged) and 10 X Tony were damaged. Additional damage to the base was moderate and again ground troops suffered lightly.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the river crossing was hit again by 27 Chinese B-25Js and the unit sustained moderate losses while all of the aircraft departed the area safely.

The Yangtze SNLF and the 11th Ind. Brigade, at the road junction were attacked by Chinese planes and the latter had light losses. No Chinese aircraft were damaged in the raids. Later the 12th Ind. Brigade was attacked and it was hit for moderate casualties. All planes departed safely.

Sining was subjected to a continual artillery bombardment and losses were heavy while the Japanese had extremely light casualties from sporadic return fire. There is no hope for the defenders.

At Wake Island a big push to totally eliminate the Japanese from the island was staged. There were no American losses and the Japanese troops sustained very heavy casualties.

Sandy reads another letter that arrived today, thanks to a neighbor who dropped it off for her. Rural mail delivery service has become sporadic as fuel stocks tighten.

Sylvia is very happy to have Pete home, safe and sound. He, on the other hand, is overjoyed to be back.

The O'Bannon continues to make ready for departure as her stores are filled and all sections report in that they're as ready as they'll ever be. Bill and Frank confer and best guess is that they're going to be a follow on force headed to Marcus Island.

Phil and his skipper confer and agree that the Benham is ready to face whatever may come her way. There has been the usual rumor mill working overtime about where they're heading and many of the men have formed a pool that will make a winner a much richer man.

Palawan is ready to start loading as soon as it's her turn. Red is convinced that they are heading to Australia, but Cookie keeps saying no.

Stick spent the day hanging around the flight line, though he wasn't up for today's operations. He spent time with some of the other pilots and then with the mechanics who are constantly busy keeping the Corsairs available for duty.

Operation Revenge has been terminated as Marcus Island will be ignored, for now. Operation King promises to be a very bloody affair and the forces need to take Marcus just aren't justified for the gain , if they were to be successful. Pentagon planners are constantly revising Operation King and it looks like it'll be the largest Allied operation in the Pacific to date, except for the ill fated Operation Grinder.

Kweiyang was raided and sustained light damage. AA accounted for a downed Helen and 4 others being damaged.

Taung Gyi was struck by 52 X Liberator VI, 40 X B-24D and 61 X P-38G. The resource center took heavy damage and no Allied aircraft were harmed.

Lunga was attacked by 142 X B-24D and 6 snooping PBMs. Flak shot down 6 X B-24D (37 damaged) and a PBM was damaged also. Damage to the airbase was very heavy and ground troops sustained heavy casualties. The fact that there was no air opposition surprised the nervous American aircrews.

Sailing orders for the O'Bannon and Benham were issued and in the predawn hours tomorrow morning the ships will be on their way to a destination that will be given to them between now and departure. Bill puts pen to paper and when he's done he makes sure that the letter for Sandy will be posted. He then joins Frank who has just finished an inspection tour of the ship. “Relax,” Frank says, “O'Bannon and her crew are ready. How about a cup of coffee and a game of chess?” Bill smiles and nods his approval and the two men head for the ward room.

Captain Demesa informs the crew that they are scheduled to begin loading tomorrow morning. All is ready and the men will be happy to have something to do instead of the continual boredom that has plagued them of late. Red, Cookie and Lucky head ashore for a walk and enjoy a nice afternoon.

Jon Doe approached Pete and sits down across from him. “I'm glad you managed to make it out alive,” he says. “I've been told to let you know that you have no further obligations to us.”

Pete looks up from his cup of tea and laughs. “Did any of you really expect me too come back for more? I've had more than my share of this damned war and I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines. Please don't hesitate to ask for my help as long as I can do it from right here.”

“I understand and wanted to thank you anyway,” John says. “See you later.” With that Pete returns to reading his newspaper when Sandy appears and asks what that was all about. Pete tells her that it was nothing.

Benham's crew are eager for sea. Not knowing what's going on has more than a few of them antsy. Phil is glad to see that they are chomping at the bit. The veterans on the Benham still feel that they owe the Japanese for the defeat handed out with the sinking of the Big E and other ships earlier in the war. The men see all of the ships coming and going and know that the USN is now much larger and stronger than any of them ever imagined possible.

Today the British claimed that 313 Axis ships were sunk in the Mediterranean since the Battle of El Alamein.

The SS Mingo attacked a pair of heavily escorted TKs 139 miles SW of Kagoshima and put a torpedo into one of them, setting her ablaze. Mingo then silently slipped away undetected.

At Sining a Japanese attacked inflicted heavy losses on the Chinese troops and damaged their defensive network. The Japanese sustained very heavy losses. This is the end of the tether for the cut off Chinese.

Palawan continues loading supplies along with other ships and as usual the crew is betting on where they're going. Cookie and Lucky spent the afternoon taking a long walk together. They have to be careful of where they go because some of the troops stationed here told him that there are mines. Cookie replied, “Thanks, I never thought of that as I know about the ones in the water.” They shared a laugh. As usual Lucky if a big hit with the troops and the few civilians that they run into.

Stick has another CAP mission under his belt. A report that Japanese planes were approaching Wake resulted in his scrambling and being vectored out to an intercept of what turned out to be a false contact. He doesn't mind because flying breaks the boredom.

The Benham and O'Bannon departed Pearl as escorts for a convoy bound for Baker Island. Bill stands on the bridge scanning the convoy as the men of the O'Bannon scramble to their stations. Frank listens as sections call in as manned and ready. He tells Bill the time and they smile knowing that the crew is sharp.

Phil feels miserable and his skipper has told him to stay in his bunk. A pharmacists mate informed him earlier that he has a fever and gave him some aspirin to take.

The Palawan has started loading cargo and the men are busily straining and cursing as they go about their work.

The Tarpon lies alongside the wharf at Noumea.

It's now official that Operation Revenge has come to a close as it appears that the Japanese are indeed heavily reinforcing Marcus Island. Next up is Operation King.

The RAF passed the 100,000 ton mark of bombs dropped on Germany.

The Germans withdraw U-boats from the Atlantic after losing 56 boats in April and May.

3 X Jack were on patrol over Taung Gyi when suddenly 26 X B-24D appeared with their escort of 40 X P-38G. In the fast and furious moments that followed all of the Jacks went down, the resource center was moderately damaged and all of the Allied planes departed safely.

A lone Jack was in the air over the 6th Division near the road junction when 21 X B-25J and 20 X P-40N arrived. No planes were damaged as the Jack ran and Japanese troops sustained light casualties. The 62nd Chinese Corps, nearby, was attacked by 24 X Helen and 15 X Tojo and they had light losses too. The planes never saw their enemies. The Chinese then threw artillery shells at the Japanese and inflicted light casualties.

Sining was subjected to more artillery bombardments that lead to very light losses.

Phil's fever still hasn't broken and LTCDR Worthington is very concerned about his exec. Phil dutifully takes his aspirins and says that he's drinking enough water to sink the Benham. “Well at least you still have your sense of humor,” says the skipper.

Sandy devours the letters that she got today while Dave reads the newspaper. There's stories about soldiers in Europe and almost nothing local. He gets up and pours another mug of coffee and asks about Bill. Sandy relates what little he tells her about his life in the Navy.

The ships are approaching Baker Island and O'Bannon will almost immediately depart with other warships.

Word has been passed that the 2nd Marines will be spending the next month in place. This is taken by the men in Gunny's platoon with indifference. Slim smiles and says, “I'll sit out the rest of this war right under this palm tree, if they'd let me.”

The 1st Marines are preparing to embark and be transported to their staging area for Operation King.

Pete and Sylvia have spent another delightfully boring day in one another's company. They are deeply in love and she's so happy to have him home. She's even happier that he's promised her that his war is over.

Myitkyina was bombed by 47 X Liberator VI, of which 1 was damaged. The 54 X P-38G were loitering and watching the show as there was no Japanese opposition in the air. Damage to the base was moderately light and there were a number of secondary explosions observed.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the river crossing was raided by 26 X B-25J and the unit sustained moderated casualties while all of the Chinese planes departed safely.

Sining continued to be bombarded by the Japanese and casualties were light among the defenders.

A Chinese bombardment attack on the Japanese at the road junction caused
negligible losses to the IJA troops.

O'Bannon sailed from Baker Island with CA Quincy and 2 other DDs to replenish a DMS TF that is running dry. These simple little ops where nothing should go wrong always throw a scare into Bill. He a firm believer that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. O'Bannon's crew is sharp and all systems are fully functional so there's nothing to do except stay alert.

Phil is weak, but the fever has broken. He's told to just take it easy and not worry about anything. One of the crew stops by and offers Phil a couple of books to read, if he'd like. Phil thanks the man and is surprised to see that they are classics, not what he would've expected. These books will make the inactivity bearable.

Stick can't believe that life out here in the middle of nowhere, the front line of defense, is so boring. Wake Island has nothing to offer and he'll be damned if he'll go swimming. He was at the beach today, just relaxing when he heard somebody scream “Shark!” Sure enough he saw it just off shore, lazily swimming around. The funny part, he thinks, is that each time somebody talks about it the shark grows in size.

Allied units continue their realignment in Australia as additional troops arrive from the US. Allied planners hope that this time the attack will come off as planned.

The Red Army started an offensive against isolated German units at the Kuban bridgehead.

Combat

Myitkyina was bombed by 18 X Blenheim (1 damaged), 48 X B-25J (3 damaged) and 51 X P-38G. There were no Japanese planes in the air and the airfield had light damage.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was attacked by 24 X B-25J and had light casualties while all of the Chinese planes left unscathed.

The IJA 6th Division, located at the road junction, was hit by 27 X B-25J and 21 X P-40N. Japanese losses were light and all of the Chinese planes departed undamaged. The 62nd Chinese Corps, a scant 5 miles away was visited by 24 X Helen and 14 X Tojo. The Chinese troops had light losses and no Japanese planes were damaged. A Chinese bombardment attack at the road junction resulted in negligible Japanese casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps at Sining suffered through an air raid by 21 X Helen and 21 X Oscar. The troops had light casualties and all of the planes departed intact. The Japanese then attacked Sining and it fell to them. Japanese losses were heavy while Chinese casualties were moderate. The surviving Chinese retreated rather than surrender to the hated Japanese whose cruelty is known far and wide.

The 3rd Marine Para is loading onto APDs and will hit Mili. P-38Gs are assigned to provide air cover. It is hoped that this will force the IJN to move units into the area and the USN can then bring them to battle.

Major Smith got a “soon” for an answer when he asked when the 1st Marines would be transported to their staging area for Operation King. The troops are fit and rested, though not in a hurry to leave Noumea as it's peaceful here.

The O'Bannon returned to Baker as the mission was scrubbed and nothing happened. Bill was happy with the change in orders as he had that awful foreboding feeling that something bad was going to happen.

With Pete around again Sylvia resumes her work at the Hospital and upon her return she casually mentions that the medical staff would like to see him. Pete tells her that he's fine and that he doesn't need a doctor, just a hug would do fine for what ails him.

“Do you think that the Japs will really launch an attack to retake this place? Who wants it anyway? It's so far from anywhere that our bombers and patrol planes can barely reach another island. Hell, if the Japs want this dump, let 'em have it,” the pilot says to some of the others from the Flying Deuces as they play a game of euchre.

“Let them have it? Are you nuts? How many guys have died for this place? I say that we give them a royal butt kicking if they come sniffing around,” another of the pilots says.” This seems to be the popular feeling and they are itching to see some action.

The first unified meeting of the French resistance, led by Jean Moulin, recognized de Gaulle as it's leader.

Combat

The SS Sunfish attacked an AP 72 miles off of Kragen and came up empty. She did exit the area safely though to continue her patrol.

The SS Herring attacked a TK a129 miles SW of Kagoshima and missed. Other than a severe depth charge attack that shook the boat violently all is well.

The 3rd Marine Paras unloaded over beach at Mili, taking some casualties as they seized the island.

Jaluit was bombed by 53 X B-25J and suffered light damage to the port facilities while 13 of the bombers were damaged.

A raid on Gili Gili by 16 X B-24D was met by 45 X Zero, 24 X Jack and 14 X Tony. 11 of the Allied bombers were destroyed and 2 X Zero went down (3 damaged) and a Tony was destroyed (3 damaged). No bombs were dropped on the target. Due to a lack of co ordination 51 X B-17E arrived a little while later and the Japanese CAP of 43 X Zero, 24 X Jack and 14 X Tony tangled. 22 of the Flying Fortresses went down and another 7 were damaged while the Japanese lost 4 X Zero (8 damaged), 3 X Jack (5 damaged) and a Tony (2 damaged). Again the bombers were driven off without a single bomb being dropped.

The IJA 6th Division, at the road junction, was raided by 23 X B-25J and 23 X P-40N. All of the Chinese planes left safely after inflicting light casualties on the Japanese.

Palawan's convoy approaches Auckland and her crew are excited about getting there safely and spending some time sampling the local culture.

Benham and O'Bannon ride at anchor at Baker Island awaiting orders that should be issued shortly. There's nothing to do so parties are set about doing the routine things that constantly need doing aboard ships being attacked by the ocean's salt.

The Flying Deuces remain untested by the Japanese, but severely strained by the boredom that is the daily routine. “This chow isn't fit to feed a dog,” one of the pilots complains loudly as he stands in the line getting his breakfast.

“Is that so? Then you won't mind not getting any fly boy,” says one of the kitchen detail. “It's a long time to lunch and maybe by then you'll have a different opinion of our efforts.” With that Sick watches as the pilot just walks away.

“Thanks,” Stick mutters to the man who scoops some powdered eggs onto his mess kit.

The 15th USAF attacked Italian oil refineries at Livorno today.

The SS Pompon happened upon an IJN ML about 140 miles from Tulagi and proceeded to hit it with 2 torpedoes, sinking it.

At Tori Shima a TK hit a mine laid by one of the USN subs.

Kweiyang was bombed by the Japanese and had moderate damage and very light casualties. It was thought that 4 X Helen were damaged by ground fire.

Mili was raided by 34 X Betty and they did minor damage to the vacant base.

The 4th Chinese Corps, 59 miles from the road junction was hit by Japanese aircraft and had light losses.

The DDs Norman and Nizam detected and attacked an IJN sub 200 miles from Brisbane. They celebrated a confirmed kill as the sub breached before sinking.

Pete makes an order for the pub and then sits reading the paper with a cup of tea. Sylvia is in the office, having gone over the books and is now getting ready to go to the hospital. Milt and Jac walk into the office and she gives them a hug and peck before running off. The 2 then walk into the pub and join Pete. Milt helps himself to a pint and they talk of the war. Later Jac asks Pete if he and Sylvia have given any thought to having children. Pete replies, “I really don't think that this crazy world is the kind of place that I would want my child growing up in. Maybe after the madness of this war is over we'll give it a go.” Milt gives him a poke and wink after Jac leaves and tells Pete to keep in practice for making a baby. The two men share the laugh and Milt leaves to find Jac. Pete returns to reading the paper and thinks that he really is a lucky guy.

Tomorrow Palawan's convoy will reach Auckland. Cookie plans to see the town and of course he'll be taking Lucky along with him. Red and the other men are getting some rest as they know that their bodies will be full of aches once they start the unloading of the ship. One of the men stops by and says to Red, “I'm sorry that I was playing tricks on you with those pinups you had on the bulkhead.” He then walks away. Red is stunned, he never would've guessed that it was him, not in a million years. He laughs and heads to the galley to tell Cookie the news.

The pilots quietly stand in the line for chow and one of them, who has been humbled, mutters an apology. The men of the Flying Deuces are learning that it's not just them in the war, they rely on many others. Stick smiles at the men ladling the food out and asks one of them for another slice of bread, which the man gives to him. Not all of the jobs fighting the war are considered glamorous, but they are as important as any of the others.

The RAF hit Wuppertal with 719 bombers and claimed that half of the city no longer exists.

Combat

The SS Pollack was patrolling close in to Derby and ambushed an IJN ASW TF, hitting a DD with a torpedo. It was believed to have caused heavy damage and the stricken vessel was burning. Pollack made good her escape before being detected.

The SS Grayling was patrolling 37 miles off of Balikpapan when she was detected and attacked by DDs.

The SS Blackfish was 149 miles off of Truk and attempted an attack on a CV, thought to have been the Akagi, and a CVL, believed to have been the Shoho. Nothing came of the Blackfish's efforts as she never got into a good position to make her attack. The escorts never detected her.

Jaluit was attacked by 42 X B-24D and the port sustained moderate damage and some secondary explosions were reported. 5 of the bombers were damaged in the attack.

Mili was raided by 28 X Betty and 16 X Zero and was met by a LRCAP of 12 Lightnings. When the battle ended 2 X Betty were destroyed ( 2 damaged) and 2 X Zero went down while 3 of the P-38Gs were damaged. The airfield took very light damage.

At Myitkyina a misguided Chinese general threw his unit, without orders to do so, at the heavily fortified Japanese positions. The Chinese sustained very heavy casualties and the Japanese nary a scratch.

Tarpon continues on her way to the Solomons, where she will assume her patrol. Twice today she had to dive because of Japanese patrol planes being picked up on the radar set. CDR Wallace, the sub's skipper said, “This radar will put the lookouts out of business someday, but for now I trust a keen set of eyes more than this set that's prone to breaking down at the worst times.” The men in the control room of the sub get a chuckle out of it.

Stick can't believe that nobody in his squadron has even seen a Japanese plane yet. A Marine stationed on the island hears the pilots complaining about the lack of action and he interrupts them by saying, “You don't want to be here if the Japanese come trying to take this place away from us.”

Palwan is busy unloading at Auckland and as usual Red feels like he's breaking his back. “There's got to be a better way of loading and unloading these ships,” he grunts to the man working with him. “This hold is like an oven.” Red is determined to figure out a way to make the process easier and as the men talk somebody says, “If you do figure out a way to load and unload faster and easier we won't have any time to enjoy out port of calls.” That brings plenty of laughter. Meanwhile Cookie and Lucky are taking a relaxing walk around the town. Being the cook has many advantages and when you're a good one the crew revere you.

The SS Stingray was attacked near Derby by PGs and suffered a few hits and will try to make it to Perth. The issue is in doubt as her flooding is severe.

The SS Herring was attacked by an IJN ASW TF about 63 miles S of Sakashima.

Kunming was raided by 30 X Helen and 20 X Tojo and the airfield sustained light damage, though 2 X B-25J were destroyed at their revetments. It was claimed that 7 X Helen were damaged.

Mandalay was bombed by 52 X Liberator VI, 39 X B-24D, 57 X P-38G and 6 X F-5A along for a look. Much to everyone's relief the Japanese had no planes up to contest the attackers and a lone Liberator VI was damaged by flak. 4 X Tony, 2 X Dinah, 5 X Zero and 2 X Jack were destroyed on the ground and the airbase took extremely heavy damage.

Jaluit was visited by 37 X B-24D and it's port was lightly damaged in return for 5 bombers taking damage.

Sandy teases Dave about this being the last day of the month and that there's no coffee left in the house. He tells her that he can survive for a day without it. She then suggests that he drive them into town so that he can pick up some parts for jobs he has lined up. He says, “Parts for cars and trucks or do you mean a trip to the Post Office? Either way we should go after breakfast.” He then proceeds to finish off the food on his plate and announces that he'll clean up the kitchen while she gets ready. Dave knows how Sandy is about getting letters and he wants his daughter to be happy.

The Tarpon continues to cruise to it's assigned patrol area. Her skipper is concerned about the growing number of planes detected by the radar and knows that soon they will only travel on the surface at night or in bad weather as they draw closer to the Japanese bases.

Another day in the unloading of the Palawan's holds and the men are wilting in the heat. A couple of the men are going around with water for the men to drink and they ask Red if he wants any. Red turns his head to see who's talking to him as the cargo net begins to rise. The problem is that Red was holding onto it and it pull him along too. There is a popping sound and Red lets out a stream of cursing as he's in great pain. He falls back and lands flat on his back. A couple of the me rush to his side and they can see that his forearm is at a crazy angle. They help Red up and get him out of the hold. Captain Demesa has been informed of the injury and he's send a man to obtain transport to get Red to a hospital. A couple of hours later Red is lying in a bed with Cookie sitting by his side.

“Hiya kid,” he says, “How do you feel? They won't let Lucky visit you so you'll have to hurry and get out of here.”

Red has a bunch of questions and Cookie tells him that he broke his arm and that he'll be OK. Actually Red broke the elbow and healing will take a long time and it's not known if he'll have full use of his arm. “When is the Palawan sailing?” Red asks, “She won't leave without me, will she?” Cookie assures him that the doctors are letting him leave the hospital before the ship sails and that he'll be on her.

“Did you see that arm on poor Red? It looked worse that Carl Hubbell's after all these years of him throwing that screwball of his.” The man sadly shakes his head thinking of Red.

“Maybe he's not so lucky after all,” mutters another man.

Combat

The SS Grayling attempted an attack on an AK about 143 miles from Balikpapan, but only got pounced on by the escorts.

A Japanese sub was driven off as it approached a convoy 100 miles from Brisbane.

Maloelap was bombed by 33 X PB4Y and sustained moderate damage to the airfield while a bomber went down and 14 others were damaged by the AA.

Jaluit was attacked by 28 X B-25J and 34 X P-38G and they ran into a CAP of 23 X Zero. 5 X Zero were destroyed and another was damaged while the Americans had 6 X B-25 J damaged and 2 P-38G downed and 2 more damaged. The port was lightly damaged and ground losses were put as very light.

The 13th IJA Division, at the road junction was attacked by 7 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N. The Japanese had a LRCAP of 4 X Jack and 3 X Tojo on hand. In the battle a Tojo was damaged and 2 X P-40N went down and another was damaged while the ground troops sustained very light casualties. A few miles away the IJA 6th Division was then attacked by 19 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N and the Japanese had 4 X Jack and 3 X Tojo. Japanese aircraft losses were a Jack damaged and a Tojo destroyed and another was damaged. The Chinese lost 5 X P-40N and a B-25J and an additional 4 were damaged. Ground troops had light losses.

Makin was raided by Japanese carrier planes (13 X A6M5 Zeke, 67 X D3A Val, 19 X D4Y Judy , 16 X A6M3a Zero , 57 X B5N Kate and 13 X B6N Jill). The CAP of 12 X F4U-1 and 14 X P-38G tore into them. The Japanese planes got through due to sheer numbers and the ships suffered for it. The Japanese lost 9 X Zeke, 3 X Val (1 damaged), 4 X Zero (another damaged) and 3 X Kate while 4 X P-38G were destroyed.

The Allied ships hit were:

TK Arethusa, Bomb hits 1, on fire
TK Captain A.F. Lucas, Bomb hits 7, on fire, heavy damage
AK Indus, Bomb hits 2, on fire
TK Cathwood, Bomb hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AK Allegan, Bomb hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
TK Tide Penn, Bomb hits 11, on fire, heavy damage
AK Appanoose, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
AK Bootes, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
TK Admiral Williams, Bomb hits 13, on fire, heavy damage
TK Tulsagas, Bomb hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
TK Deroche, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

This is the second time that the Tulsagas has been clobbered by the Japanese.

A Japanese bombardment attack 52 miles from the road junction inflicted heavy casualties on the Chinese troops.

Word of the Japanese attack spreads like wildfire through the 1st Marine's encampment. The men wonder if they're going to be sent to that area.

At Tarawa the 2nd Marines hear of the attack on Makin and there is an uneasy feeling among them. Gunny tells his platoon the the Japanese already lost a fight with them and don't want another so that they should relax. Slim wonders if the attack on Makin is just the beginning of a Japanese move to retake what they took from them.

Word somehow has spread all through the PTO as the Flying Deuces have also heard of the raid on Makin. This has served to remind them that the boring CAP missions that they are flying can turn into a nightmare in a flash.

A car brings Red back to the Palawan and Cookie is there with Lucky at the gangway to greet him. Red looks worse for wear and a nurse tells Cookie, “He really shouldn't be leaving so soon. Here's medication for him to take for pain. There's nothing else except that as soon as you return to Noumea, or wherever it is that you're going to he needs to see a doctor.” With that she gets back into the car and is gone. Cookie heads back to the galley to get something for Red to eat.

The Red Air Force hit the German rear area communications and airfields at Smolensk, Orel and Bryansk today.

Eden announced Empire casualties for 3 years of war at 92,089 KIA, 226,719 MIA and 107,891 POWs.

The Allied 2nd Tactical Air Force was formed in the UK today.

Nazi agents alerted the German government and Goebbels ordered the plane of actor Leslie Howard be shot down over the Bay of Biscay as he flies from the Iberian Peninsula to Britain. He was an outspoken anti- Nazi.

Combat

The IJA 13th Division, at the road junction was attacked by the Chinese. 19 X B-25J and 7 X P-40E made up the raid and they inflicted light losses on the Japanese and no planes were damaged.

The Palawan departed Auckland after dark and her convoy slowly makes it's way back towards Noumea. Red is taking it easy since there's nothing for a one armed deckhand to do. The pain killers dull the pain and Lucky keeps him company sensing that something is wrong. The dog is extremely interested in the cast on Red's arm and is constantly sniffing at it and taking an occasional lick.

Stick gets out of the cockpit of his plane after another uneventful period on CAP. He's tired, sweaty and hungry. He figures a shower, some chow and then he'll relax. He checks into the operations tent first and within 15 minutes he's on his way for his first shower in, how many days has it been?

Slim and the rest of the platoon are on a march around the island. There really isn't far for them to go but Gunny has told them that circles can do wonders for lazy legs. They're carrying all of their gear and it's hot too. Slim thinks that this is still better than combat and his thoughts turn to Joe Orsini as they pass the area where he was killed. Damned war, he thinks.

Orders are being drafted for the movement of Operation King troops.

The Red Air Force bombed Kiev and Roslavl and the Luftwaffe raided Kursk.

The SS Grayling spotted an IJN ML 18 miles E of Balikpapan. She got into an attack position and hit her victim with a fish. Radar enabled the attack and better torpedoes make for a happier and more deadly crew.

An Allied bombardment attack at the road junction resulted in very light Japanese casualties.

The Chinese are stuck in place and the Japanese seem to hold all of the cards. The commanders in Chungking are not exactly brimming with confidence though the size of the army that they command is huge.

Ed sits in a meeting where the plans for Operation King are being gone over. When they get to the bombardment part of the op the man defers to Ed who simply states that, “My Old Gals pound the hell out of the Japanese in concert with bombs raining from the sky.” This is met by a chuckle as the air is filled with confidence.

Tarpon continues to dodge Japanese patrol planes and the popular consensus is that without the radar things would be very dangerous, to say the least.

Palawan plods along maintaining her station in the returning convoy when suddenly out of the darkness another AK suddenly appears cutting across her bow. An alert lookout alerted the helmsman who through his swift action avoids a collision. The 2nd Mate wasn't alert and he thanks the man. One of the men muttered that maybe Red is still lucky.

Algerian wine reached British shops, the first fruits of victory.

The 74th Chinese Corps, 23 miles from the road junction was hit by 20 X Ann and 18 X Sonia of which 2 of the former and 2 of the later were damaged. Chinese losses were very light.

Gili Gili was attacked by 48 X B-17E and 64 X B-24D, but the Japanese were ready for them with a CAP of 38 X Zero, 23 X Jack and 15 X Tony. The big bombers were turned away without a single bomb being dropped on target as 11 X B-17E went down (20 damaged) and 28 X B-24D were destroyed (8 damaged). The Japanese losses were placed at 3 X Zero destroyed (16 damaged), 16 X Jack damaged and a Tony went down (5 damaged).

“This cast is driving me crazy,” says an agitated Red, “I'm itchy as hell and I can't get at it.”

Cookie hands him a long thin piece of metal and says, “Try this.”

“Can I keep this or do you need it?” asks Red as he sighs with relief as he scratches away beneath the cast. When Cookie tells him to keep it Red thanks him and goes to a spot on the deck where he's been sleeping as it's to hot below. Privately he also remembers being torpedoed and thinks that the chances of survival are better here than below decks.

The Flying Deuces have yet to see a Japanese plane. “This is probably one of the safest spots in the Pacific,” a pilot was heard to say. Stick was just lazing around when another of the pilots chided him into joining him for a run. It's easy to get lazy and out of shape with nothing to do here.

The Chinese Nationalists and Communists have come to an uneasy agreement and they will concentrate their efforts against the Japanese. Mao really had no option as he was pushed south by the Japanese and the Nationalists need every able body they can get to keep up the fight. For now the problem is that the bulk of the Chinese troops that were in Sian are caught in the road junction area and are being pinned by the Japanese in place. Rumors that this agreement was brokered by the US and USSR abound.

The Luftwaffe bombed the huge tank factory at Gorki.

The House of Commons rejected lifting the economic blockade against occupied Europe.

An attack by the submarine Paddle, 22 miles SW of Tori Shima, on an IJN CV believed to have been the Akagi was roughly handled by the carrier's escorts. The sub's systems were badly beaten up by the violence of the depth charge attack and the boat will now make for Pearl to be repaired.

6 X MSWs were observed to be clearing a mine field at Wyndham.

Pete has eased quite nicely into a civilian life, except for the nightmares that have been plaguing him. He's supposed to see a doctor tomorrow about this, but he holds little hope of anything helping except time. Sylvia has been deeply concerned and he refuses to talk about what happened on his last mission.

Gunny sits next to Slim and announces that the 2nd Marines have orders to move very soon. “All we need are the ships,” he says. Slim grunts and thinks of fighting the Japs once again.

“The concentration of men and material continues as planned for Operation King,” says the briefing officer who then leaves the room.

FDR asks, “So we're going to push the timetable on King back again? Aren't you afraid that the Japanese will use this time to beef up the defenses? When will the attack begin?”

“Mr. President,” says the admiral, “We hope to go early in September. To go sooner would be ill advised as we won't be ready.”

FDR relents and tells his admirals and generals that if the pace of the war isn't accelerated the American people will grow increasingly restless.

The U-153 sunk 4 ships off the Brazilian coast.

Jaluit was raided by 33 X PB4Y and 37 X P-38G and it's port suffered light damage. 6 of the bombers were hit by ground fire.

An IJN sub was detected 41 miles E of Wake Island and was attacked by USN DDs who claimed many hits. No kill was confirmed.

27 miles from the road junction the Japanese attacked the Chinese, who managed to maul their tormentors and hold their ground. Th Japanese suffered extremely heavy casualties and the Chinese had heavy loses.

A Japanese bombardment attack at the road junction area resulted in light Chinese losses.

“Are you sure about that? A delay in Operation Classic and pushing the schedule up for an as yet unnamed op? Submit the plans to me at tomorrow's meeting. Yes, see you then Admiral.” FDR gets off of the phone and wonders about this possible change of events. Sometimes it's very hard to be a good commander in chief because you have to trust those who are the professionals and are supposed to know what they are doing. To meddle in the planning could lead to disaster. FDR then reads the brief about the coup in Argentina 2 days ago. Their army occupied Buenos Aires.

Stalin chides his commanders to do more against the Germans and prepare for the inevitable conflict with the Japanese. “We don't want the Americans and British getting all of the spoils when the Japanese collapse. We have to be prepared to take what we want so I want plans on my desk by the beginning of next week.”

Red wakes up from a nightmare in a cold sweat. He dreamt that the ship he was on was sinking. He'll keep this dream to himself as nobody needs anything more than the threat of danger to frighten them.

Still no action and still the boring, mind numbing routine at Wake Island. “Why were we in a hurry to get here, of all places?” Slim shakes his head and continues, “Other outfits are where the action is and if we don't get moved we'll be the only Marine Squadron to never so much as see the Japanese.”

At his visit with the doctor Pete answers the questions put to him and when asked how he feels about the things he's been through Pete answers, “I haven't done anything special. I've been through more than some and less than others. I'm just happy to be out of it.” The doctor thanks him for his time and tells him that he'll be in touch.

Sylvia talked to the doctor today while she was at the hospital and he told her that Pete needs time because what happened to him was extremely stressful and he'll have to deal with it in his own way. He tells her that if she can get him to talk about it that should help, but not to press the issue.

Tarpon is on station and the number of air patrols makes it impossible to surface except at night.

Red lies on his back staring at the stars and Lucky lies next to him nuzzling into his side. Red is thinking that on such a beautiful night where everything is so tranquil that it's hard to believe that there's a war going on. That's when the tranquility gets rudely disrupted by the rumbling of explosions. He jumps up and looks around, but sees nothing. Later he finds out that an escort attacked a suspected sub.

The meeting at the White House goes smoothly and surprisingly fast. It's now official that the focus is Operation King and it's pushed back to early September. The main goal is to bring the KB to battle and then make the invasions. The expected problems will be the elusiveness of the KB and vast minefields. In the meantime Operation Classic is shelved. FDR asks about Operation Sunshine and is told that all is going smoothly.

Japanese PGs discovered mines at Derby.

An air attack on the Manchuria Adv Corps 32 miles from the road junction inflicted extremely light Chinese casualties and it was claimed that an Ann and 2 X Sonia were hit by AA. 4 miles away the 69th Chinese Corps had light losses and a Helen left smoking.

Jaluit was raided by 46 X B-25J (5 damaged), 25 X PB4Y (1 damaged) and 38 X P-38G and the port was moderately damaged along with estimates of light casualties to ground troops. Later another strike consisting of 50 X B-25J (3 damaged), 12 X PB4Y (4 damaged) and 34 X B-24D (1 damaged) hit the port for additional light damage.

The SS Puffer spotted 2 X MLs about 71 miles NW of Marcus Island, but they attempted to attack her before the sub could get into a position to attack. Though Puffer sustained no damage her attempted attack failed to come to fruition.

The Chinese troops are still locked in their positions, either unable or unwilling to move. If Japanese troops remain to keep them pinned and a strong force moves around the flank to hit Chungking it is feared that China could be knocked out of the war. The situation is precarious, at best.

Pete tells Sylvia once more that he doesn't want to talk about what happened and that he is trying to forget about it. She doesn't press the issue and when he wakes up from his nightmare she just tries to comfort him.

“We saddle up in about 3 weeks so enjoy your chance to relax while you can,” says Gunny to the platoon.

“Any idea were they're sending us this time?” one of the men asks. Gunny shakes his head in answer.

“Some tropical paradise no doubt,” says Slim as he gets up and wanders off.

Word has been circulated that the AVG's P-38Gs are going to be replaced with a new model of the plane within the next few months. The pilots have mixed emotions about this because they have racked up a tremendous number of kills with their squadron in these Lightnings. Remember that the AVG was divided at the beginning of the war and 2/3 of it just vanished? The top Allied aces facing the Japanese are flying out of Imphal and business has been brisk.

USN APDs encountered a mine field at Makin.

An air attack on the 80th Chinese Corps, 41 miles from the road junction, resulted in light casualties and a damaged Helen. Another raid hit the 27th Chinese Corps, 5 miles away, and inflicted very light casualties while a Sonia and an Ann were reportedly damaged. A Japanese bombardment attack in the same area resulted in heavy Chinese losses.

Jaluit was bombed by 28 X B-25J (9 damaged), doing light damage to the port and very light losses to the ground troops there.

“Excuse me Captain Demesa, can you spare a minute? I'd like to talk to you for the drew, sir.” The man is nervous and he keeps shifting his weight from foot to foot. “Sir, it's about Red. He can't do his job and it'll be a long time before he's well enough to work. Well the thing is the men would like to keep him around. We'll pick up the slack for him and, well you see we think that he's good luck for the Palawan.”

Captain Demesa smiles at the man and replies, “Tell everyone to relax. We're more like a family here on Palawan since before this war. We took Red on in the early days of the fight and he's been a good crewman so we'll work it out. Of course this all depends on what Red wants.”

“Another boring patrol on CAP duty flying an endless racetrack pattern. Hell, we didn't even get vectored out to intercept a false return. Maybe the Japs have surrendered and somebody forgot to tell us.” The pilot walks away leaving Stick at the Ops tent. The squadron's morale is still high, but the Flying Deuces are bored. Their skipper decides that something needs to be done and he arranges for training flights starting tomorrow. Some of the pilots not assigned to CAP duties that day will fly and they'll get to dogfight each other. It's something he convinced the base CO to allow by using the excuse that his pilots were getting complacent and stale.

Sandy manages to get a ride to town with a friend. This means a trip to the post office, which is really a general store whose owner also serves as the town's Post Master. She hopes to get some letters from Bill and she'll mail some to him.

Tarpon continues to cruise her patrol area and the only Japanese she's managed to spot have been aircraft. The radar operators have rapidly become one of the most valued members of the crew. The Japanese have taken to flying some patrols before dawn and after dusk so even in the dark life on the surface can be dangerous.

Tito was wounded today by a German air attack.

An air attack on the IJA 40th Division 42 miles from the road junction by 26 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N caused light Japanese losses and all of the Chinese planes departed unscathed. Nearby the 66th Chinese Corps was subjected to an attack by 25 X Helen and 4 X Tony. This time however there were 12 X P-40N on a LRCAP that resulted in 2 X Helen and a Tony being destroyed at the cost of 3 Warhawks lost and another damaged. The Chinese troops sustained light casualties. Another attack by 19 X Ann and 17 X Sonia was met by 11 X P-40N and a lone P-40N was damaged as the Chinese pilots bagged 5 X Ann and 3 X Sonia (another damaged) while the 81st Chinese Corps had light losses. Later in the day the Chinese 81st Corps was subjected to another raid of 41 X Helen and 14 X Tojo that was opposed by 5 X P-40N, all of which were lost in the ensuing fur ball. A Helen went down and another was damaged and a Tony was flamed while the 81st had additional light losses. In the afternoon Japanese artillery caused light Chinese losses as the Allied troops continue to be pinned in place by their enemy.

A Japanese artillery bombardment attack at the road junction resulted in light Chinese casualties.

Jaluit was bombed by 6 X PB4Y, of which 4 were damaged and the port took light damage.

Allied planners noted reports from a sub in the Marcus Island area that it was shadowed by Vals and Kates. It is suspected that a major reinforcement or resupply of Marcus is in the works and the KB is in the area to insure it's successful completion of the operation. The USN is not in a position to contest this and Marcus, for now, has been crossed off the hit list.

Bill and Frank share some time together and talk about what they'd like in the future. Bill says, “First off I'd like to move up in rank and get a bigger ship, not that there's anything wrong with the O'Bannon. Then I think that I'd like to get married and have a family. When I retire I know a place in the mountains of northern California that absolutely beautiful.”

Frank says, “That sounds good to me. I'd like to have my own ship, a wife and family too. When I retire I don't know where I'd like to live, but I figure that as long as I'm in the Navy I'll get to see plenty of places.”

Captain Demesa has talked with Red and advised him to see a doctor and think things over before making any decision. Red thanked him and told Cookie about the talk and Cookie agreed with the Captain. “If you stay aboard, fine and if not you can always go back to Hawaii and manage our affairs there. Think it over and don't rush anything.” As usual Red follows Cookie's advice.

The pilots of the Flying Deuces are happy to have the opportunity to work on their combat skills, but are complaining that the schedule is to infrequent and that the flight parameters are to restrictive. The answer is, “Follow the rules or sit on the ground.”

“So the Americans are going to take advantage of our offer and move into one of our bases soon? That is good. When will they send troops to the second base? No idea yet? Alright send me the plans.” Stalin gets off of the phone and clasps his hands behind his back as he paces the room thinking. Suddenly he walks out and returns with a bottle of vodka and proposes a toast. “To the deaths of Hitler and Tojo.”

The US is literally disgorging ships, planes, material and men now. Naval planners look to Operation King as the chance to flex the Navy's muscle.

The Americans (day) and British (night) start to coordinate bombing attacks against major German cities.

APDs encountered more mines at Makin and DMSs that had just arrived went to work sweeping them.

The IJA 41st Division, 44 miles from the road junction, was bombed by 18 X B-25J and casualties were moderate. The Chinese planes departed unharmed. The Chinese have decided that for now they will attack in this area out of Chungking in the hopes of pressuring the Japanese into a pull back. Troops are still pinned in place in this area and closer to Sian.

Red still can't decide what to do. He feels like he's letting his shipmates down, but when a few of them approach him and tell him that they all want him to stay aboard the Palawan he rethinks things. They told him that he and Lucky have kept them safe so far and that losing him and the dog would be a bad thing. He later goes to Captain Demesa and tells him that he'd like to remain on the ship, if the doctors say that it's OK.

Sandy is out hiking on a beautiful day enjoying the sunshine when she stumbles upon a couple of bear cubs. Being wise enough to know that their mother will be close by and very protective she immediately retraces her footsteps. She hears a rumbling growl from behind, but the bear doesn't chase her. She has now decided that quietly hiking through the mountains isn't such a good idea and decides that singing to announce herself will prevent any animals being startled by her.

Elaine reads a letter from her brother. He says that being in the desert has been an awful thing. “We all thought that it would be hot and dry, but the reality is that at night it gets cold.” He goes on to say that the sand gets in everything and that the ground is rough and rocky, not like in the movies. He closes with he's looking forward to seeing Rome and Paris after the Germans are kicked out.

Himmler ordered the liquidation of all of the Jewish ghettos in Poland.

SS Blackfish, on patrol about 129 miles NW of Truk, stalked an IJN TF consisting of 4 X DDs. She tried, but failed to get into a position to attack them. The DDs never detected her and she continued on patrol.

The SS Pompano entered the Derby area looking for targets and instead collided with a mine. The resulting explosion did light damage to her systems, but the flooding is a major concern even with the pumps working. She will attempt to limp back to Perth.

8 X B-25J attacked the IJA 17th Division 43 miles from the road junction inflicted light losses and having none of their own. The IJA 36th Division, a few miles away was hit by 14 X B-25J and had moderately light casualties, again at no cost to the Chinese.

There appears to be a disturbing increase in the size of the garrison stationed at Tulagi. Allied planners wrestle with this forward defense in large numbers that the Japanese are using.

FDR holds a meeting of his Cabinet and he informs them of the war plans in the Pacific. Towards the end of the meeting he says that the Soviets need to be advised of the commencement of Operation Sunshine. The particulars have been closely guarded to date as the entire operation relies on stealth and surprise, rather than might.

Prime Minister Curtin consulted with his generals and later in the day the Americans joined the meetings. They are targeting another attack on the Japanese with the intent to rid Australia of their continued uninvited presence. September is the target for the largest land operation to date in the PTO, aside from the struggles in China. Troops continue to shuffle into their new positions in preparation for the attack. The realignment is almost complete and some more American troops are scheduled to be arriving within the next month.

Stick flew today and was “shot down” twice for his efforts. He's very upset at this and talks with the pilot who bested him about it. “It was simple,” he says, “You forgot to keep checking your 6 and you flew straight and level for a bit to long. Other than that you make that plane of yours maneuver pretty good. I'd have you fly my wing any day of the week.” With that the 2 of them head off for some chow with Stick feeling a little better, but still upset that he forgot something so basic.

The Tarpon continues her patrol and still hasn't contacted any shipping.

King George VI landed in Morocco to visit with the troops.

All quiet on the Pacific Front.

Sandy is hiking more times a week now than ever before. She finds that it clears her head and she worries less about Bill. Dave tells her that Bill is the kind of guy who will succeed in whatever he tries to do and he makes others better at their tasks also. “He'll be fine. Pity the Japs that tangle with him,” Dave tells her.

Gilbert Edwards, known as Gil to some of the other recruits and Brooklyn to still more of them, is learning the Army way. He learned never to volunteer as that duty was horrible. One day he and a pal decided to duck out of a detail and take it easy. What they didn’t know was that the place where they decided to relax was an artillery range. They were caught and spent hours on their hands and knees policing an area. “Policing hell,” Gil said, “We're damned garbage men without the can, broom or shovel. Look at all of these butts we've picked up.” His pal was happy not to be cleaning latrines. Life has been different. One of the officers was caught stealing as he would order a certain barracks some kind of task and when it was empty he went to work. Recruits were missing watches, money and other things of value. Finally somebody put 1 and 1 together and got 2. Nobody knows what happened to the officer, but he's gone now.

Slim noted today that some units got new weapons to kill the Japanese with. An Army unit had their AT guns replaced with larger, more powerful weapons. “I wish somebody would remind somebody in power that the Marines could use new toys too.”

Gunny heard what Slim said and replied, “Slim, we have a reputation to maintain in the Corps. You know that the Army always gets the new toys and then we get the crumbs. When it comes to the fighting we do more with less.”

Slim sighs and says, “Lucky us.”

Taung Gyi was bombed today by 48 X Liberator VI, 42 X B-24D and 18 X P-38G. The raid met no opposition, no planes were damaged and the resource center took heavy damage.

Tulagi was visited by 142 X B-24D and one was damaged by ground fire while the port was hit for moderate damage. There were numerous secondary explosions and losses to ground troops were thought to have been negligible.

6 X B-25J attacked the IJA 27th Division 41 miles from the road junction inflicting light casualties at no cost to themselves. The IJA 41st Division, 11 miles away, was also struck at nearly the same time by 18 X B-25J and 19 X P-40N. Troop losses were placed at moderate and again no Chinese planes were damaged. Japanese artillery inflicted light losses on the Chinese in the area.

Japanese artillery hit the Chinese troops for light losses at the road junction.

Gil Took a test today to check his depth perception. He had wanted to become a pilot, but the man giving the test took one look at the results and told Gil, “The first time you would try to land you'd just go through the runway. Forget about flying son.” Gil will now have to rethink things as Basic is drawing to a close. He still wants to fly, but how?

John Doe joins Pete and asks for a pint. While Pete is getting it for him the two men chat about nothing in particular. Pete is wary of being asked for his services, but there is no hint of it. The topic ends up talking about baseball and how so many of the players are now in uniform.

Dave is reading the newspaper and even though it's 2 days old, as usual, he's very interested in it. Sandy meanwhile is eating her scrambled eggs. “I wonder how long this war will go on,” Dave says, “The Germans have been stopped cold and are being pushed back. The Japanese seem to have dug in and wait for us to come to them. It says here that the Navy is huge now and is hunting the Japanese fleet, but can't bring them to battle yet.” Sandy picks up a piece of toast and stares into her coffee cup and starts to cry.

“Rename it Operation Hedge cutter,” says PM Curtin. So it will be called, the op that is intended to rip Australia of the Japanese. Washington has made good on their promises and the generals think that the weight of the attack will carry the day.

A German stated that there were 100,000 cases of typhus on the Russian front in 1942 and that there was a 15% fatality rate.

An AP struck a mine at Derby, which made for more than one happy Australian.

SS S-36 spotted and maneuvered into position to attack a ML. She proceeded to strike the vessel with 2 fish 17 miles SE of Rabaul. The ML was immediately engulfed it a huge fireball and disappeared forever.

Kunming was attacked by 30 X Helen, 3 X Tojo and 4 X Dinah and the CAP of 24 X I-153c engaged them. A Helen went down in flames and 16 others were damaged while the Chinese lost 5 fighters, had another 4 damaged and 3 Mitchells were wrecked on the ground. Troop losses were light as was damage to the base.

24 X Blenheim, 62 X B-25J, 17 X P-38G Lightning and 6 X F-5A paid Myitkyina a visit and 2 of the B-25Js were shot up by flak while the base was moderately damaged and troop casualties were put at light.

The Japanese conducted a bombardment attack on the Chinese troops about 37 miles from the road junction, inflicting moderate losses.

Another Japanese bombardment attack at the road junction area caused light Chinese losses.

Tarpon continues her lonely patrol and the only things her radar detects are snooping planes, no ships.

“That's it then,” says Red, “I'm going stay on board the Palawan. Besides it's the only home Lucky has ever known.” He sits on the hatch cover rubbing the dog's head and scratching him behind the ears. Lucky tilts his head and lets out a moan of pleasure.

“Hedge Cutter? Hmm, I like it,” says FDR, “Who cares what it's called as long as it works. What I want to know is if support troops can get into those bases quickly as get them up and running. Does the Navy have a plan to get fuel into the ports there?” He has told his military commanders to do all they can to make it work. “We need the Australians in this war and we need to get it moving so why not there? Now tell me how the planning for Operation King is going.”

Gil sits in the mess hall talking with his buddy, “I want to fly, but they'll never let me into a plane as a pilot so I'll have to be something else. I've got it figured out and it'll keep me out of combat longer too. I'll apply for radio school. Radio operators also have to go to gunnery school so all of that schooling takes time.” His friend nods and agrees that the plan is a good one, if the Army agrees.

Myitkyina was bombed by 24 X Blenheim IV, 55 X B-25J, 18 X P-38G and 6 X F-5A along for a peek. A Blenheim and a Mitchell were damaged while the airfield took heavy damage and ground troops suffered what were thought to have been moderate casualties.

The IJA 27th Division, 42 miles from the road junction was attacked by 15 XB-25J and 8 X P-40N. There were 3 X Jack on patrol and they intercepted the raiders as the Chinese planes were departing. Both sides suffered no air losses or damage while the troops on the ground had light casualties. The IJA 36th Division, nearby, was attacked by 6 X B-25J and 15 X P-40N a scant 10 minutes later and the Jacks were on hand and this time they dealt out some punishment as 2 X Warhawks went down and another was damaged. The Japanese had no air losses and the troops sustained very light casualties.

SS Pompano's struggle against the sea is still an ongoing issue, though inroads have been made against the flooding. She continues to limp towards Perth, so far away.

“Tough day Dad?” Sandy asks. “I made some coffee so maybe you should relax and have some before washing up. Dinner will be ready in about an hour.”

Ed's Old Gals are ready to go and will depart Pearl tomorrow as the forces for Operation King continue to assemble. Another flag rank officer asked him if he wouldn't rather have another command and Ed said, “Are you crazy? Without my Old Gals pounding away at the Japs how the hell could the Marines or Army ever make it ashore?”

Gunny announces to his platoon that in 2 weeks time they will be boarding ships bound for their staging area. Slim deadpans, “Well that makes me happier than a pig in the proverbial goo.” Gunny gives him a stare that silences Slim.

The 1st Marine Division will begin boarding ships tomorrow morning that will take them to their staging area. Major Smith has been reassigned and he will join the Division's CO's staff. He wants a combat command, but just can't seem to get one. “Combat will produce vacancies along with others being replaced,” he tells another officer as they walk around in Noumea. “Besides there are new formations being sent out from the States all of the time so something's bound to come along.”

“Yeah, but in the meantime we might as well keep our noses to the grindstone,” the other man says.

A quiet day in the PTO. A fighter sweep targeting Mandalay flew, but was unable to find the target due to bad weather.

Ed's bombardment TF sailed from Pearl Harbor this evening, bound for Luganville. Ed smells the salt air and thinks that it's great to be back at sea. Expectations for the target areas are:
Heavy enemy air activity
Extremely large mine fields
Large coastal gun batteries
The IJN will probably appear to give battle
He expects the Army bombers and the Navy's planes to deal with the Japanese aircraft. He hopes that his TF will knock out the shore guns and as to the Japanese fleet, bring 'em on, he thinks. What worries him the most are the damned mines. He knows that there will be many MSW vessels on hand, but he can't wait for them to do their jobs since the shore guns will kill them if his Old Gals don't do their work.

Stick flew again today and this time in the mock combat he was untouched by the opposition. He stayed glued to his flight leader and even was credited with a “kill.” He smiled at the debriefing when his CO took him aside and told him “well done.”

“Watch this,” says Slim as he points to a crab on the beach. “Look at how it moves.” The man with him remarks that when they hit their next beach he hopes that he can get that low to the ground and both men laugh. As the time gets closer each man deals with the thought of combat and it's horrors in his own way.

Major Smith looks over an intel report and wonders what they'll really be up against when the time comes. Tulagi appears to have been reinforced lately and he suspects the same will be done at Guadalcanal. This strategy of massed force being applied is all well and good, but maybe speed and trickery could work better, he thinks.

Stalin is becoming increasingly agitated as the time passes. He wants to teach the Japanese a lesson that they'll never forget, but the damned Germans remain the focus. “Contact Washington and find out from them when they plan on attacking the Japanese in our area. I don't want them grabbing territory that is ours or in our sphere of influence,” he tells his staff. “Transfer some units so that we can participate in the attack to insure our rights aren't violated.”
