Good morning friends.

Back in La Suéde. I see you have managed to provide some world changing material for me to catch up upon. Or, to put it more correctly, 28 pages of drivel for me to sift through . I trust content level is low as always

La Suede, eh? I think I had a jacket made there once. Better than La Suede? Ultrasuede...ooh la la.

French La Suéde. I'm trying to be cultivated, you twat.
Warspite1

If I may make so bold, that was excellent use of the word "twat" Grollub sir. You are clearly a most fine and talented wordsmith

Here's a screen shot of the only two operational areas in which I have active boats as of the first week of January 1940, the North Sea and the Southwestern Approaches:

The big circle with the box in the middle is an operational area, where all the patrolling and looking for shipping is done. The small circles are Special Mission Zones, where minelaying and other stuff (like transiting between ops areas might happen). Most ops areas are linked directly, but others aren't (like you have to pass through the Gibraltar SMZ to enter the Med).

I've finished ops in the North Sea for this turn (there wasn't much), and am about to begin in SW Approaches, where I have all of three boats available. Yay me!

Here's a screenie of the Loner combat display:

As you can see, Schütze in U-25 has encountered three targets this week: a British 3,000-ton merchantman, a French 2,000-ton ditto, and a Dutch 9,000-ton tanker. The markers to the left of the ships are the Torpedo Data Computer (TDC) solutions I have for each, which count against their defensive values ("3" for the tanker).

The U-25 has an Attack rating of 5, with a +1 for Schütze's status as an "Ace" skipper, and -1 for the currently poor German torpedoes. If this were a convoy, I'd have to decide whether to split the points of Attack rating amongst the targets, but because they're loners I can fire at full power against all three.

The mechanic is simple: you take the U-Boat's modified Attack rating, subtract the modified Defence rating of the target and roll the die. If you hit the difference or below, you've hit the target.

EDIT: All three ships were sunk. Yay Schütze!

Okay, four ships for 18,000 tons sunk in the SW approaches this week, with no losses of my own, although one boat is going to RTB (out of fuel and/or weapons).

If you get a chance, would you be able to give a quick description of the main convoy attacks?  I'm curious as to how they differ from Silent War.

I think I'll wait until I get to War Period 2 before taking that screenie. Can't form Wolfpacks until then, and it'd be more interesting if I could show you a convoy being attacked by four or five U-Boats...

That pilot should be flayed alive, shot, stabbed, drowned, court-martialed and then sacked.

And by "sacked", I mean stuffed into a sack and dumped at sea.

Kristian, how is Allied countermeasures like HF/DF, Enigma and radar dealt with in game?

Can you do anything about it to counter those Allied techniques that essentially and finally killed the U-Boot menace in spring of 1943?

Huff/Duff comes along in War Period 2 (about summer of 1940) and makes it more difficult to assemble Wolfpacks. If you mess up the dice roll enough, the U-Boat calling in other boats can be attacked and sunk because of it. Sounds very realistic to me.

Enigma starts "decaying" (it's a dice roll modifier in the game) and loses effectiveness. You can make a political request to upgrade it from 3- to 4-rotor Enigma which restores it's effectiveness a bit.

Radar is folded into the advance of the game, in as much as it becomes more difficult for U-Boats to move about as the game goes on, and enemy escorts and aircraft become deadlier.

The game ends at the end of the fourth week of April 1943, so there's nothing beyond that.

Thanks for info Kristian!

So... the game ends just before the "Black May" (1943 when U-Boots were decisively defeated and when the "Battle of Atlantic" was lost for Germany)...

The 4 rotor Enigma (aka Triton code) was good for Kriegsmarine because Bletchley Park didn't break into it until December 1942 - it was the last "happy period" for U-Boots!

BTW, is game dealing with cryptographic success of the Allies in a way that convoys were diverted from danger (as much as possible) when wolf pack threat was discovered via HF/DF and decrypting?

Pity. IIRC May 1943 was a very black month for the Kriegsmarine underseebooten. I wonder if the exclusion of anything after April was an allusion to there just being nothing but "the void" for submariners to look forward to.
