Now that I know what a moggie is, I feel bad about your loss. Always been a cat fan, even if their dumber than a box of rocks. Tough losing a pet.

Early morning tithe and happy 4th! Try to remember not to blow anybody parts off with the fireworks.

Morning men. Happy 4th to our across the pond friends. Captcha this this morning "KEGPIG", kind of appropriate.

When I lived in Scotland my mates always called me a colonial or yank. Sure brings back some fond memories. Never cared much for the yank comment being southern born.

Hi all,

Have you guys in the USA seen the Chevy Volt electric car?

IMHO this is great because for the first time such innovative ideas (electric cars via really big companies for reasonable amount of money) are finally mass produced for everyone!

I haven't seen one in person yet, just the advertising.

RGR - thanks for info Mike!

BTW, would you or your friends and relatives be interested in something like that (i.e. car with electric engine and gas powered engine just for creating electricity for longer trips)?

I would be interested in one, Leo, but not for a few years yet to give the technology time to mature and become more reliable and less expensive.  Similar to the way "hybrid" technology is now becoming more widespread in many vehicles.

BTW, when you say "Hybrid" you mean hydrogen powered vehicles (and not electric / petrol powered ones)?

I'm watching it very closely myself. All-electric with a backup gas or diesel generator seems like an ideal combo....at least until we perfect hydrogen fuel cells or something similar.

Singing the national anthem again tonight. This is a US vs Japan international game however, so we are also singing the Japanese national anthem. In Japanese. With only one rehearsal.

I hope we don't look out on the field and see a bunch of samurai swords coming at us.

Not hydrogen powered, Leo, but using some other method of converting kinetic energy into some stored form of potential energy that can be used to power the drive train. The most common type over here right now is converting the energy from braking into electricity and storing it in batteries that power the electric drive, while also having a gasoline engine. The Toyota Prius and Honda Insight are two very popular examples of this in the US. There are also many other models adding the technology, including small SUV's like the Ford Escape. Porsche is also adding hybrid technology options to several models. One model uses flywheels to store energy and add a good horsepower boost from electric motors on demand.

The Prius is an example of how "celebrities" can make "normal" people buy bad products. Its selling point is that it's economical and therefore good for your wallet and the environment, but in true fact it uses more fuel than a lot of its gasoline-powered equivalents. However, because it was hoovered up by Hollywood, it must be "good".

No kidding! I've had several cars that got way better fuel economy than the Prius, plus they were way less expensive.

The key for me is that the technology has been in production for several years and it is starting to become more pervasive in many models. It is becoming less of a premium option and slowly becoming a more common option, and the cost increase is shrinking.

Rained out. On for tomorrow night. Fortunately I'm off so I can make it. We chatted with quite a few Japanese nationals who were tickled that a bunch of gaijin were going to try their national anthem. Hope we can do them justice tomorrow.

Good morning. My son just loaded up IL-Sturmovik on the 360. The start video has a Mustand.

Him: Cool, D-day
Me: How do you know?
Him: It's got D-Day stripes.

How does an 11 year old know about invasion stripes? I didn't at 11.
