Just have seen the launch of the final space shuttle mission in history.

Even in success, a sad day for NASA, although I hope there soon will be a new shuttle pioneering space travel.

Good luck Atlanta, and safe return to Earth!

Yea kinda sad. My bro sent me some pictures of it on the pad. He would send me pics of most of the launches. Also got a 10 min montage video of the shuttles, only watched about a min of it. Its impressive I seen one launch and one that didn't launch (it was canceled as the boosters were ignited). If my memory serves me the only one ever.

I thought he was referring to the Atlanta Braves baseball team.  Good luck to them, too!

What is going to happen to the other shuttles now the program has finished, you know Endeava and Discovera?

Manned spaceflight in the USA is pretty much kaput. Makes me very sad, especially because lots of folks at Johnson Space Center in Houston are losing their jobs.

I forgot about Enterprise, but I didn't mention two of those for obvious reasons.....

EDIT. Sorry LoBaron, didn't mean that to sound snotty.

I did not think you sounded snotty. No apology needed.

I will not edit the thread title, it was an emotional typo overshadowed by the end of the shuttle program.

Still remember when they covered the launch of Challenger live on Austrian radio in 86.
It was one of my most vivid memories when I was young. Was quite off the track for a couple of days.

I was in high school in New Hampshire during the Challenger disaster (the teacher on board taught at a school about an hour away) and I remember that day vividly.

We watched the NASA feed of the launch at work today, and I had a chill run through me when they said "Go at throttle up" today

There was an excellent program on TV the other day all about why Challenger fell out of the sky. It expanded upon the original O-ring problem and questioned why, if the O-rings failed - Challenger did not blow up on the launch pad. How did she get so far - and, tantalisingly, could she have made it into space?

Turns out some "slag" inside the rocket did the job of the failed O-ring, sealing the gases inside. It seems that Challenger was just seconds from safety, when the slag was dislodged during throttle up and...well we know the rest

Really interesting - if ultimately sad - program.

Richard P. Feynman was involved in the investigations around the Challenger incident and wrote a book on it.

Don´t remember the title though I have it somewhere in my library. Very interesting read.

There were also reports of higher than usual wind shear just before the burnthrough started. Some speculated that the joslting from the wind shear might have contributed to loosening the slag seal as well.

Hi

You my be right. But it was clearly Kirks fault. I mean the right one on the picture

Enterpretzel was hit by some kind of a torpedo...I am not sure if WITP AE reflect this very good...but some suggest that the submarine warfare is not well represented. We need a "shcuttle" buttom by the way...

I'm sincerely sorry for the folks who are losing their jobs, but I am happy to see NASA throttling back on expenses. Given the state of the US economy, and the dramatic cuts to what I consider more important programs, we can no longer afford space adventures.
