There is somebody called John in the wifdiscussion list of yahoo, who told nme he has done it. I kind of remember he was australian. I will copy some of his comments:

quote:

We decided last year to try it magnetised and are playing it this way for the first time at the moment. We expanded the European and Asia/Pacific maps so the hexes were about twice the size, printed them off and stuck them onto sheet metal. We mounted the metal onto the garage wall. Counters were printed off as stickers and stuck onto a magnet strip. The big downside to this method is that we don't have the back of the counters at the moment, which has made keeping track of Reserve units and year pools a bit of a harder task. We are looking into plastic squares with rare earth magnets embedded and putting the counter sheet stickers on those. Expensive, but split four ways not so bad for the game we all love.

quote:

There was also a good article in the 2008 World in Flames annual about magnetising WiF.

I think he cut-up his maps and then had the sections enlarged, as noted by the broad white lines at each map "fold". He probably used a drafting quality copier. The original file of the picture was "Wifkarte" so I'm guessing he's German ... but I guess he could be an Australian who emailed the pic to a German friend.

I continue to pay my present house one day I will have a bigger one and a room just of WiF, and maybe I will have Master WiF at this point of time. This guy's idea of enlarging the maps I like it.

How many counters can you pile one on top of the other without them falling off the wall though??

Looks like the guy use the same counter magnets we use, we can top 4-5 of them easily on our maps and we are moving the maps vertically with the magnets this way in the closet without any issue after our gaming sessions. And the maps stay that way for 1-2 weeks.

The counter magnets are not cheap and easy to find.

So how do you deal with monster naval stacks - or even just large ones of 5+?

Looking at the pic at the Amercan map, it looks like you just have to splay them out. He did the same in Italy

If the hexes are augmented 2x in both senses, that would allow 4 stacks. If needed, I guess they can use the closer sea hex, like we usually do.

A careful examination of the map shows two stacks fitting in easily in London, and a four stack not so well in Marseille. I would play so much more often with this set-up. Heck with that wall you could put the entire force pools on the wall.

Salut warspite, we just split them before moving the maps in the closet. In the Pacific, me (I play USA) and the japanese player began placing the huge fleets off map (or on the edges) with a "task force" counter on the map to show where they are. And we do not stack the huge fleets, it's easier to see/administrate what ships compose them that way.

I once played "War in the East" using "office tac" but it destroyed the counters, so you would have to use reproductions.

As for this guy's maps....WOW!

My maps and production chart were on a thin sheet of balsa plywood with a 1" by 1" frame around the perimeter to give it rgidity. On all four corners were round hooks, and looping through the hooks were thin ropes and a pulley system to host it to the ceiling when not in play.

When it was time to play, we just unhooked it and lowered it "oh so gently" onto a table. Many a game and many a beer, and never a major catastrophe. Plus the game was out of the way and the real-estate was wife or kid friendly again.
