Robert, do you read about all this recent "mess" with Tottenham in English papers?

Warspite1

Hi Leo - yes I have been keeping a close eye on this as you can imagine.

quote:

In all seriousness, and being practical, I think that everyone has a price, and if you give me £40m or £30m + a half decent replacement, then I would sell .

That said, having a) signed a six year deal only last year b) having been a big part of the team that failed to get into the Champions League this season, and c) bearing in mind Tottenham put their money where their mouth is and signed you, when the likes of Arsenal thought you were too small to make it in the Premisership, I am inclined to say - stuff it, show some bloody loyalty and gratitude and give us a couple more years otherwise you can rot in the reserves until you are 30......

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the Thread Branch of the Tottenham Hotspurts Fanclub (TTHFC?)...

Why do football supporters expect a player to show 'loyalty' to their team? How many Spurs (or other teams) players started their career at that club? The vast majority of players have already turned their back on one team to join their current employers, so why is everyone surprised when they express a desire to do it again? To most players the team is just an employer like any other, although they're paying them excessive amounts of cash to play sports. Tesco aren't going to be upset when their shelf-stacker moves on to another employer, you wouldn't expect to have to stay with your current employer if something better came up with a different company. Not sure why sportsmen are held to a different level of commitment than the rest of us, especially when that same team will quite happily give said player a kick out of the door should a better alternative turn up. Transferring (pun intended!) the situation across, would you turn down a move to another company in the same field as your employer if they offered more money and/or better career prospects?

Maybe I've got low standards from following such a **** team around the lower reaches of the league, but I don't expect any loyalty from any players. Not even the ones who start at a team as a youth player. From a recent example of an ex-Spurs player, why should someone from Yeovil who played for Lincoln care that Notts County are a rival? He's not from round there, the rivalries aren't his... Why should a player from Croatia care that Chelsea are a local rival of Spurs?

Just my 2p worth, right or wrong. Just because we invest our time etc in a team doesn't mean that the players should have to. As long as they work as well as they can whilst they're there I'll be happy (I'm looking at you Tony Battersby, you useless *******). If they want to leave then good luck to you.

Thanks Robert and Martin!

IMHO all professional players are grossly overpaid!

But, then again, clubs also earn lots and lots of cash from stadium attendance, TV rights, advertising...

Perhaps all this should be toned down to more "decent" levels... <SIGH>

BTW, I distinctively remember last year when Modric signed 6 year extension of his contract with Tottenham - it was clearly said that if next season (i.e. now) the right offer comes with lots and lots of money that Tottenham chairman and the player would consider it (because it would benefit both sides)... this all happened, IIRC, in Dubrovnik, Croatia... so... there was some kind of "Gentleman's Agreement" that Levy now convincingly forgotten (because Modric clearly said that he would not signed the extension otherwise)...

Also, loyalty from players doesn't exist - they are all professionals and would play for whomever pays more (the only exception are the players that really started in one club as young children and continued to play for that same club all the years).

I laugh every time when newcomers say "I always wanted to play for club XYZ and I always cheered for club XYZ"!

Re your first point above - I would say just two words Sol "Judas" Campbell. He came through the ranks at Tottenham and was hero worshipped at the club. But the club let him down, didn't sign quality players or hire a quality manager and Campbell finally said enough is enough. I have no problem with that - his talent deserved a quality club where he could play at the highest level. BUT, with one exception, he could have gone anywhere, absolutely anywhere and still been welcomed back at Tottenham with all due reverence and respect. What does he do? Where does he go? AND, AND on a Bosman. Thank you Sol, appreciate it.....

Re point 2 - yes I agree. I think Teddy Sheringham was a Millwall fan as a kid...oh and a Tottenham fan....oh and a life long West Ham fan too!!!!

Irked? - well when you consider the absolutely vile abuse (which I personally thought over-stepped the mark) he used to get, then yes, I suppose you could say the Tottenham faithful were a little put out by his decision .

Thank-you.

Campbell hasn't gone there now - he left Arsenal a few years ago saying he wanted to play abroad......

I think he's retired now - he was certainly released by Newcastle United.

Good doesn't rack up a big score in No Country for Old Men . . . exception proves the rule I guess. Hmmm, were there other movies where evil does well? The von Trapps won in the Sound of Music.

I think that 'No Country for Old Men' proved that doing the wrong thing, will led to the wrong outcome.

I think that 'The Sound of Music' was classical old movie sugar bullshit.
