Leo "Apollo11"

I think good wins.

Good always wins in the movie's, damn it all!

Good doesn't rack up a big score in No Country for Old Men . . . exception proves the rule I guess. Hmmm, were there other movies where evil does well? The von Trapps won in the Sound of Music.
Warspite1

Now now .......Sound of Music was a sweet film

Sorry, I had to root for the Nazis in that one. I rooted for the aliens in Battle Los Angeles as well.
Warspite1

I know what you mean - I was rooting for the iceberg in that hideous monstrosity Titanic. What a steaming great pile of pigswill that film was.

Ohh and it's a Pompey inspired 3,000th post

That may be the best news they've had for quite a while. Congrats on the 3k.

What's a 'Pompey'?

Asks the dumb Sheep.

Warspite1

The home of the Royal Navy - Pompey = Portsmouth.

Ahhh... thank you Sir, well you learn something every day.

I've never seen how Portsmouth translates/relates to being called Pompey but those whacky Brits do things their own way.

Perhaps they have one of these near their Naval Base.

I don't think anyone knows for sure where Pompey comes from - maybe Sprior has some idea?

Have to add that to the list of 'evil wins' movies. The only thing good in that movie was Kate Winslet's breasts.

Indeed so - a good shout anarchyintheuk

I must confess that I was shocked when I saw the aforementioned pile of pigswill (the film, not the breasts, which were rather good). I did not realise that film makers could take a real life officer aboard Titanic - and for no reason other than to appeal to a certain section of the film watching public - turn him into a murderer and a bribe taker. Absolute piggin disgrace.

What precisely did you expect from a James Cameron film?

To be honest, I didn't know much about him. I only wanted to see the film because I had heard about the great special effects. I was - rather naively as it turned out - expecting a historically accurate film with CGI doing what "Night to Remember" couldn't do.

I was certainly not expecting Cameron to have taken lessons from Josef Goebbels propoganda ministry (with the slight difference that this time the cowardly English officers were shooting at Irish steerage class and not German steerage class.

Irish steerage....German steerage....difference?

I had relatives who died in Irish steerage on that boat. Probably distant cousins.

Anyone looking forward to the Aliens vs. Cowboys movie? Looks like a good time to me. Aliens in the future has been done and overdone. Aliens in the present, the same. Falls in the category - And now for something completely different.

The "Pompey" is old nickname of the town itself (i.e. Portsmouth)...

How do I know that - well Niko Kranjcar used to play for them few seasons ago and i learned that then!

Leo we know that.....

The question is; where did the town get it's name from?

BTW - how was Harry Potter?

From Royal Navy Museum...

quote:

ORIGINS OF THE NAVAL TOWN NICKNAMES FOR PORTSMOUTH - “POMPEY”

• Bombay was part of the wedding gift of Catherine of Braganza to Charles II. Portuguese seaman saw a resemblance between the two ports and may have called Portsmouth “Bom Bhia” which to English ears sounds like Pompey.

• Dame Agnes Weston was describing the murder of the Roman general Pompey at a lecture to a naval audience. A member of the audience exclaimed “Poor old Pompey!” and this phrase stuck.

• A drunkard’s slurred pronunciation of Portsmouth Point (where there are many taverns popular with sailors)

• Ships entering Portsmouth harbour make an entry in the ship’s log Pom. P. as a reference to Portsmouth Point (this being to long). Navigational charts also use this abbreviation.

• La Pompee was a captured French ship moored in Portsmouth and used for accommodation. (Captured 1793 and broken up 1817). There is a Yorkshire term “pompey” for prison or house of correction.

• Volunteer firemen in the eighteenth century (known as pompiers) exercised on Southsea Common.

• In 1781, some Portsmouth sailors climbed Pompey’s pillar near Alexandria and became known as the “Pompey boys”.

• The pomp and ceremony connected with the Royal Navy at Portsmouth led to the adoption of the nickname, “Pompey”.

Hi all,

Last Harry Potter was OK... nice ending to a saga...

BTW, the movies stayed close to novels as they could...
