Combat

The SS Muskallunge attacked a heavily escorted AK and blasted her open with 3 torpedoes 39 miles off of Kagoshima. The escorts found and subjected her to a severe attack in which light systems damage was done. She will return to Wake for repairs.

44 X P-38G swept into the Mandalay area only to be met by 32 X Zero, 19 X Jack and 29 X Tony. The fur ball resulted in 4 X Zero downed, a Jack lost and 12 X Tony destroyed while 21 X P-38G were shot down and 2 others damaged. Pilot quality is a big factor in combat results, but the gap is closing and the war of attrition favors the Allies, just don't tell the pilots that.

The SS Blackfish, about 51 miles NW of Truk attacked and missed a juicy AK that only had MSWs for escorts.

As Ed's TF plods along he and his staff go over their plans once more. “The damned mines are our biggest problem,” says Ed. “No matter what we do I've got a gut feeling that some of our escorts will stray into trouble even though only the battle wagons, with their greater range, will be firing.”

“So we wait and wait, bored, and then when the action heats up we wish we were waiting,” says Slim to a new man in the platoon who asked him what it's like in combat. “Things are crazy, it's loud and Gunny will save your behind if you listen and do what he says. It doesn't matter what happens because if we survive this next battle they will find another one for us to fight.” Slim reflects on what he just said and realizes that he's starting to sound more and more like Jack used to. He then grows silent as he wonders where and what Jack is doing now.

Gil grows increasingly apprehensive as Basic Training nears it's completion. He's afraid that the Army will decide to make him something that he doesn't want. What he doesn't know is that he's already gotten a place in a training class for future radio operators.

Pete is busily getting ready for tonight as Friday nights tend to get fairly busy as the locals like to congregate and talk about things over a pint. Sylvia is helping him and as she goes by he playfully grabs her, gives her a hug and kiss and then says, “You may now go about your business.” She laughs and calls him fresh. It'll be a long and tiring night that'll knock the playfulness out of them and Saturday will be more of the same.

“Radar” (Radio Detection and Ranging) becomes the official term for “Radio location.”

The SS Blackfish tried to attack a force of MSWs and PCs 55 miles NW of Truk, but failed.

Tulagi's port was bombed by 137 X B-24D, of which 1 was lost and 5 others were damaged by flak. The port was moderately damaged and there were many secondary explosions observed. The ground troops had negligible losses.

The IJA 1st Mortar Battalion, 45 miles from the road junction, was attacked by 28 X B-25J and 18 X P-40N. A LRCAP of 4 X Jack engaged them and a bomber was lost while the troops sustained moderate casualties.

Though the SS Pompano is still leaking, she will make it to Perth as her pumps are winning the battle and her skipper expects a dry boat before docking.

All Soviet troops in the Far Eastern Command have been put on alert as a convoy nears one of their bases and the Japanese response, if it's detected, is expected to be violent. This is Operation Sunshine and it's hoped that the Japanese won't know what's happening until it's to late. Troops and supplies are about to flood the Soviet base and then come the planes to protect future supply runs.

“Keep me posted,” and FDR dismisses the man and wearily heads off to get some rest.

Combat

IJN vessels encountered a mine field at Eniwetok.

The submarine Harder managed to get an unsuccessful attack in on a ML 217 miles from Sendai.

The same old thing keeps preying on Ed's mind as his TF plows through the waves. “How the hell can the mines be swept under the noses of shore batteries? How can we bombard said batteries and not worry about the mines?”

His staff members shrug and one of them says that, “If I could answer that one Admiral, then I'd be a pretty smart guy.” They share a laugh, but Ed is worried sick about the problem.

“At this rate we'll be able to pay our debt off long before we ever thought possible,” says Sylvia as she sets the ledger down. They work hard, but are enjoying it and the time they get together is short but sweet. Pete smiles at her as he gets out of the chair and heads back to the pub.

No mail from Bill for a few days and Sandy is visibly depressed. Dave wisely is keeping out of her way as she mechanically goes through the daily routines.

Red walks with Cookie and Lucky around the Noumea area. Tomorrow he sees a doctor and he hopes that all is OK. Life on the Palawan is it's usual routine and these walks make things much better. He appreciates the crew wanting him around even though he can't do any of the work. Captain Demesa has talked to Red about studying navigation in the time he now has free and Red said OK. He never thought that he'd have to read so much, but he does have plenty of time on his hands.

Ships are arriving at Tarawa and Makin Islands taking troops to their staging point for Operation King. The USN has plenty of muscle in the area shadowing this just in case the IJN spots all of the shipping and decides to interfere.

The RAF started shuttle bombing. They leave England to bomb Germany, reload in North Africa, bomb Italy and return to England.

Combat

An air attack on the IJA 17th Division 44 miles from the road junction by 8 X B-25J and 2 X P-40N was jumped by 5 X Jack and 5X Tojo. The bombers managed to dump their loads on the Japanese troops, though they inflicted very light casualties. The running air battle as the Chinese planes headed for their base resulted in 3 X Jack damaged, a Tojo downed and another shot up while a Warhawk blew up in mid air and 2 bombers were shot down with 2 others being damaged. The IJA 104th Division, a few miles away was then struck by 8 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N. The Japanese CAP of 5 X Jack and 5 X Tojo pounced again and downed a Mitchell, damaged 3 others and also damaged 2 of the escorts while they lost 2 X Jack and a Tojo with an additional 3 Tojos damaged. The ground troops had very light losses. Another raid targeted the IJA 27th Division 8 miles away and the 8 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N ran into 4 X Jack and 5 X Tojo. The Japanese troops suffered light losses while a Warhawk was damaged and 2 X Jack and a Tojo were destroyed. The Chinese pilots are more than a little pleased with their new aircraft as they feel that they're fighting the Japanese on even terms now.

The 4th Australian Tank Regiment, 51 miles from the rail junction, was hit by 6 X Betty and 13 X Helen for light losses. No Japanese planes were touched by the Aussie gunners. A little while later a larger raid appeared. It was comprised of 13 X Sally, 27 X Helen and 2 snooping Dinahs. Losses to the Australian troops were light and again the ground fire failed to find their targets. Until AA units move up this is feeling like a continuation of Operation Grinder.

13 X Sally, 24 X Helen and 2 X Dinah conducted an attack on 4th Australian Tank Regiment, at the rail junction, inflicting very light casualties at no cost to themselves.

The Palawan started loading artillery belonging to the 1st Marine Division as she'll be part of a convoy taking the 1st to their staging area for Operation King. Major Smith watches as the 1st Marines board ships thinking to himself that so many of them will be mangled and torn in battle.

Benham sailed from Baker bound for Tarawa with many empty APs to pick up troops for Operation King. Slim sits talking with Gunny and the conversation turns to what their hopes and plans are for after the war. “I'll do some more time in the Corps and then get put out to pasture,” says Gunny. “I'm just and old Marine and nothing more.”

O'Bannon sailed as an escort for a CV TF bent on raiding Japanese bases in CENPAC before heading off to support Operation King. Bill busily checks with Frank and is reassured that all is well with their ship. Bill knows that a battle is looming, he just doesn't know where and when. “You know that we're bound to bump into the Japanese Navy sooner or later,” he tells Frank who nods in agreement.

Stick flew CAP today and is bushed. He spent the entire time doing everything that he was taught to do and now as he walks into the debriefing tent he feels tired. He tells the man that there were no contacts, real or false, just an expenditure of Avgas.

Combat

The SS Guardfish stalked and successfully attacked an AK about 139 miles SE of Truk. The unlucky AK was hit by 2 torpedoes and it sank quickly. The skipper of the Guardfish entered into his log book that he thought it odd that only MSWs were acting as escorts and no attempt was made to attack the sub. No sooner had he made that entry than sonar reported many surface craft conducting what appeared to be search patterns. Then came the depth charges and 1 detonated close to them.

The SS Rasher was on patrol about 269 miles NW of Palau when she came across an unescorted AK and proceeded to hit her with about 8 rounds from the deck gun and 2 fish sinking her.

6 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N conducted an attack on the 104th Division, about 61 miles from the road junction. Japanese losses were light and all of the planes departed safely after their ordinance was expended. An attack on the 35th Division, about 8 miles away, was made by 12 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N. Casualties were thought to have been light for the Japanese and again all planes left intact.

The 4th Australian Tank Regiment, at the rail junction, was struck by 6 X Betty and 13 X Helen causing light losses, no planes were hit by the troops. The unit also encountered an as yet unknown Japanese unit guarding the junction.

Kwajalein's port was raided by 27 X PB4Y and they bore through the CAP of 10 X Zero damaging 3 of them. 8 of the bombers were shot up, but they rained their bombs down on ships in the port claiming multiple hits on a BB and 2 X CVs, 1 of which was burning. The port took moderate damage and there were a couple of secondary explosions observed.

FDR has been urging the Pentagon to direct it's field commanders to be more aggressive. Meanwhile he has also been hounding them for information on Operation Sunshine. The brief today told of many ships carrying troops, supplies and fuel to their destination as the opening of Operation Sunshine. The staging of aircraft will follow after the Russian base is prepared for them.

Gil Edwards was informed today that he will be reporting for radio school after Basic Training ends. When he asks where that is they tell him Pittsburgh. He hopes to be able to get leave in between so he can visit with his family in Brooklyn.

Bill is more than pleased with his crew and their handling of their duties as O'Bannon knifes through the rollers in the van of her TF. The planes come and go in an almost constant flow. The fighters on CAP, the SBDs and float planes on their searches. He wonders if the Japanese are in the area and if there will be a battle.

Phil eyes the chart and checks on the convoy's progress. He hopes that the Japanese don't have major fleet units in the area as there are only DDs and a CL to protect the transports. He hopes that the USN is lurking nearby with major assets to protect them.

Red has been very happy since being told by the doctor that examined him that all is going well with his healing. “Being young and healthy doesn't hurt,” the doctor said. He and Lucky are spending lots of time together and Red is teaching the dog new tricks. One of the crew is heard to have said that he doesn't mind carrying the artillery to kill the enemy, but the ammo scares the hell out of him.

Sylvia returns to the hotel at night and tells Pete that the hospital has been put on alert for possible heavy casualties. Pete knows that sooner or later the Japanese would have to be evicted from Australia or the war would be lost.

The submarine Guardfish spotted and attacked an AK about 217 miles SE of Truk. It was being escorted by only MSWs. She hit the AK with a fish and left the scene with her victim on fire.

An ASW TF located and attacked a sub 141 miles NE of Tarawa. They claimed multiple hits, but didn't claim a kill.

Kunming was raided by 16 X Helen and 24 X Tojo and the Chinese intercepted with 21 X I-153c. The air battle witnessed a furious, but lopsided fight as the Chinese claimed to have damaged 10 X Helen at the cost of 6 fighters lost and 2 more destroyed. 2 B-25J were left burning ruins at the airfield, which took light damage.

Tulagi's port was bombed by 83 X B-24D, 8 of which were damaged by AA. The port had light damage.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, at the river crossing was attacked by 12 X B-25J and had light casualties. All of the Chinese planes departed unharmed.

The IJA 104th Division, about 47 miles NE of the road junction, was attacked by 13 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N. A LRCAP consisting of 3 X Jack, 4 X Tojo and 3 X Tony engaged the Chinese and a Jack was damaged, a Tojo went down and another was shot up while a Mitchell was damaged and a Warhawk was shot down. The ground troops sustained moderate losses. The IJA 35th Division, about 11 miles away was attacked by 15 X B-25J and 15 X P-40N. The Japanese had 3 X Jack, 3 X Tojo and 3 X Tony on hand. A Jack was damaged and a Tojo was lost with another damaged. 2 of the bombers were damaged and 6 of the fighters were shot down while another was shot up. Japanese troops suffered moderate losses.

The 4th Australian Tank Regiment, at the rail junction, was hit by 6 X Betty and 13 X Helen and took very light casualties. No Japanese planes were hit by the ground fire.

The heavily damaged TK Tulsagas departed Makin bound for Tarawa where she will join other cripples for the voyage back to PH. The men of her crew believe that she's a cursed ship and they all want off at the first possible chance that they get. One of the men is heard to remark, “What'll they do to me if I jump ship? They can't find anything more dangerous that being on this Jap magnet.” He's one of the crew that suffered through the raid by the IJN that ravaged a convoy that scattered and so many met their doom.

Still out in front of the TF the O'Bannon searches the depths, surface and skies for any telltale signs of trouble. The men go about their duties and if at all possible are even more attentive than normal. Bill is on the bridge with a mug of coffee letting his mind drift off to other things as there's really nothing for him to do. In another hour Frank will relieve him and he'll write a letter to Sandy before turning in.

Benham searches and keeps coming up empty, which is a good thing. Phil lies in his bunk falling asleep when suddenly the ship's vibrations change subtly. This is enough to alarm him, but as he isn't called and everything seems normal he allows himself to doze off. He dreams that he's in Hawaii, on the beach.

Palawan has finished loading and moves off so another ship can start filling her holds. Soon the convoy will be ready to sail and Red is stuck on the ship so he and Lucky wander around and stop by the galley to visit with Cookie. This is the dog's favorite place as he's always looking for that next morsel to down.

More and more units are approaching their assigned areas where they will await the orders to advance in Operation Hedge Cutter. They troops are confident that this time they will liberate Australia from the clutches of the Japanese. Their commanders are a bit less enthusiastic.

Combat

The SS Blackfish was attacked by an ASW TF, 45 miles E of Truk, but she managed to give them the slip and took no damage.

The SS Greenling, 275 miles from Nagasaki, attacked a heavily escorted TK. She failed to score a hit and the escorts never detected her.

The SS Shad, 115 miles SE of Taipei, tried to attack 3 X ML and failed. She continued trying to get into a position to attack the Japanese vessels and finally, with a little luck, managed to hit a ML with 2 fish. The ML sank immediately.

60 X Liberator VI, 48 X B-24D and 78 X P-38G conducted an attack on Mandalay while the Japanese managed to put up 26 X Zero, 24 X Jack and 36 X Tony in the defense of the base. Between what was in the air and on the ground the Japanese lost 30 X Zero, 9 X Jack (7 damaged), 39 X Tony and 2 X Dinah while the Allied losses were 2 X Liberator VI (4 damaged), 2 X B-24D and 21 X P-38G (5 damaged). The airbase was heavily damaged and ground troops were thought to have taken moderate losses.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, at the river crossing was attacked by 20 X B-25J and both sides had no casualties.

The IJA 40th Division, not far from the road junction, was bombed by 19 X B-25J and their escort of 13 X P-40N mixed it up with 4 X Tojo. A Tojo was downed as were 3 of the Chinese fighters while ground losses were light. A little later the 36th Division, in the same general area, was raided by 10 X B-25J and 11 X P-40N. 4 X Tojo pounced on them and 2 went down while the Chinese lost a Warhawk (2 others damaged) and a bomber was damaged. Japanese troops took light casualties.

The 4th Australian Tank Regiment, about 57 miles from the rail junction, was struck by 6 X Betty and 13 X Helen. The unit had light losses and claimed no hits on the planes.

An IJN TF, 22 miles SW of Ebon, was attacked by 22 X PB4Y and 32 X P-38G. The bombers claimed hits on a BB and a CA at the cost of no planes being damaged. Another attack on the same TF later in the day by 6 X PB4Y and 6 X P-38G scored no hits and 6 bombers were damaged by flak. Another strike by 3 X PB4Y and 20 X P-38G also came up empty and all of the bombers sustained damage. If these ships are bound for Makin's vicinity for a bombardment run they are in for the shock of their lives as the USN has CVTFs positioned for an intercept and they have gone unspotted as far as the USN knows.

Phil is in the engineering spaces and talking with the men. The heat is hard to take, but he feels that a visit can only improve the men's spirits.

Another day another letter is added to the stack that Bill has penned for Sandy. He stretches and heads for the bridge. There has still been no contact with the enemy, though there have been reports of IJN heavy surface units approaching.

Palawan and her crew rest while the last ships of the convoy are loaded. Soon they will depart for Luganville. Cookie is being helped by Marines as there are many extra mouths to feed and the new men find Lucky an ever ready mouth in which to throw scraps of food. Red talks with some of the Marines and they tell him of the battles in and around the Noumea area that they fought.

Gil decides to ask about leave before his next phase of training begins and he's told that since he'll be traveling through New York City he can expect to get a weekend for himself. The thought of seeing his parents and sisters makes him happy.

Gas chamber/crematory III was opened in Auschwitz. The 4 new crematories have a capacity of 4,756 bodies per day.

The SS S-36 was approximately 71 miles SE of Rabaul and she tried to attack a ML, but never managed to get into a favorable position.

Submarine Sailfish attacked and hit a lone AK with a torpedo, setting it ablaze, about 18 miles from Derby.

Operation King is gathering steam as the pieces to the puzzle are falling into place.

Unfortunately the IJN TF seems to have retired after being hit yesterday by LBA from Makin. A maritime patrol plane discovered the CV Saratoga and it's possible that this Japanese force will now retire to Truk. Sooner or later they must give battle.

Bill has noted the snoopers and doesn't know if a battle is in the offing or not. He says to Frank, “If I were in command of the Japanese fleet I'd retire. A surface force would be dead meat for the CVs.” Frank nods in agreement.

Palawan's convoy has sailed and Cookie remains the busiest person on the ship. Lucky has become a big hit with the Marines on board and Red is concerned as the dog has become bloated and is throwing up. “He'll be eating again in no time,” one of the Marines says.

Operation Sunshine is in full swing and the convoy is nearing it's destination without being detected, so far. With only light units escorting any visit by the IJN would be a disaster.

My apologies for no updates lately as I'll use the excuse of getting the new computer built and installing all on it.

The game continues about 3 months ahead of the AAR as Steve's computer died and we haven't done a turn now in 3 weeks.

SS Saury tried to attack some PCs about 29 miles from Balikpapan, but instead she suffered the pointy end of the spear and took some damage.

Taung Gyi was bombed by 24 X Blenheim, 61 X B-25J and 27 X P-38G. The raid was unopposed and manpower hits were moderate.

An air attack on Lunga was executed by 182 X B-24D, of which 1 was destroyed and 26 were damaged by ground fire. There was no CAP flying and the airfield was very heavily plastered. There were numerous secondary explosions and 3 X Dinah were left burning. The ground troops were estimated to have sustained heavy losses.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was attacked by 29 X B-25J and took moderate casualties as the Chinese continue to pound away at the unit blocking the river crossing. No planes were damaged in the attack.

The IJA 104th Division, located at about 22 miles from the road junction, was attacked by 29 X B-25J and 13 X P-40N. Casualties were reported as light and all of the planes departed safely. The IJA 27th Division, about 15 miles away was hit by 10 X B-25J and 8 X P-40N. The unit sustained light losses and no planes were damaged.

The 4th Australian Tank Regiment, nearing the rail junction, was attacked by 7 X Betty and 12 X Helen. Casualties were light and it is hoped that the unit will arrive under the relative safety of the AA umbrella later in the day.

Bill calmly reads through all of the reports filed by the various sections and wonders if the USN has squandered an opportunity to deal out some punishment to the IJN. He's tired and lying down on his bunk he skips rereading any of Sandy's letters and drifts off to sleep.

Lucky is stretched out across the entrance to Palawan's galley and Cookie remarks to one of his helpers that nobody escapes alive without paying the guardian of the gate. The convoy will arrive shortly at Luganville and from there it's anybody's guess where they'll be heading.

As a very large convoy nears Petropavlask nervous planners in the Pentagon keep their fingers crossed as all depends on the Japanese not discovering what is going on. The crews and troops involved stare nervously in all directions and somebody is heard to remark that, “I can't wait until we get ashore somewhere so I can have a smoke before hitting the rack.”

It's official, Gil has written orders to report for training in Pittsburgh. He'll get his weekend in Brooklyn and then do the almost 400 mile trip by train. He's exited at being able to see a new place and reflects on how his life has gone so far. Before the war he was attending Lincoln High School and working in a hand bag factory at night and on the weekends. All of his money went to help the family and what little he was able to keep was what he made do with. After high school he went to work with his eldest sister and her husband at their candy store. He was still supporting the family and the hours were long. He wanted to become a university student and study history, but like many others his dreams were not a reality due to the Depression. When the war came nothing really changed much for him though he noticed that many people who had bought cigarettes 1 or 2 at a time now bought an entire pack at once. He was still caught in the same rut. When he was drafted into the USAAC he viewed it as his great escape from that rut and now he was going to learn all he could and do all possible to avoid returning to the same old life.

The submarine Flying Fish was attacked by IJN PCs and MSWs 37 miles E of Truk, suffering negligible damage.

Lae was raided by 48 X B-17E and 61 X B-24D, of which 2 were damaged by AA, and the airfield was very heavily damaged with numerous secondary explosions being reported. No CAP was a pleasant surprise.

The IJA 40th Division, not far from the road junction, was protected by a LRCAP of 8 X Oscar and 6 X Tony which attacked the 12 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N that appeared. An Oscar was damaged as were 3 X Tony while the Chinese had a fighter go down and a bomber was killed (2 others damaged). Ground losses were light. Nearby the IJA 27th Division was hit by 9 X B-25J and 8 X P-40N. 8 X Oscar and 6 X Tony met them and an Oscar was flamed (another damaged) and a Tony was shot down. The Chinese lost 4 X P-40N and 4 Mitchells were damaged. The troops sustained very light casualties. The IJA 35th Division, also in the same area, was attacked by 14 X Mitchell and their escort of 7 X Warhawk. 7 X Oscar and 6 X Tony engaged them and 3 X Oscar were lost and 2 X Tony went down while 2 B-25J were destroyed and another 3 were damaged. Troop losses were light.

The 7th USA Division, at the rail junction, was attacked by 6 X Betty and 17 X Helen. 2 X Betty and 5 X Helen were damaged and the troops had very light casualties.

The SS Shad attacked a couple of TKs about 200 miles W of Nagasaki, but failed to do any damage. She was never detected by the escorts.

In the wardroom of the O'Bannon the discussion is that of an opportunity lost. The crew is itching for a chance to get in some punches even if it means defending against air attacks.

A couple of Marines are watching some birds in flight and a member of Palawan's crew tells them that “It means we're getting close to land.” Meanwhile Lucky is making his rounds of the ship and eagerly accepting any morsels that are offered to him. When he finally returns to where Red is sleeping he moans, flops down and sighs. Red, having been awakened by the dog's arrival, throws an arm over him and goes back to sleep. Deck space is at a premium for sleeping as below decks is like an oven.

Pete and Sylvia are enjoying being around together and keeping busy with the hotel and pub. The “guests” come and go unannounced and the rooms are paid for on a monthly basis, occupied or not. The pub is a bustling place and even though it's a Monday Pete is busily keeping patrons in drink and food as well as conversation. The topic, as usual, is about when the lazy Allied commanders will get off their bums and kick the Japanese back to Tokyo, where they belong.

The SS Flying Fish was attacked by IJN DDs, but the sub eluded her would be tormentors and continued on patrol. The DDs continued their searching and later in the day regained contact only to have the sub get away again. The Flying Fish then tried to attack some MSWs, but couldn't get into position. The escorts detected her, but failed to harm the sub. Another ASW attack on the sub a little later by PGs yielded an accurate depth charge attack.

The SS Puffer attacked an AK hitting it with a torpedo causing fires and heavy damage.

24 X IL-16c were on CAP over Kunming when 12 X Helen and 8 X Tojo appeared. 3 X Helen went down and 5 others were damaged while the base took light damage with no casualties. 3 of the Chinese fighters were destroyed and 4 more got shot up.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the river crossing, was attacked by 24 X B-25J and a like number of Tonys were there. 9 bombers were shot down and 6 got damaged while 8 X Tony were damaged. The unit suffered light losses.

The IJA 40th Division was hit by 9 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N while the Japanese had a CAP of 7 X Oscar and 7 X Tony up. 3 X Mitchell went down (2 damaged) and a Warhawk was toasted (2 damaged). Nearby the IJA 17th Division, under the same CAP, was raided by 16 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N. 2 X Oscar and a Tony were destroyed while 4 X B-25J were damaged and 2 X P-40N went down. Ground troops took light losses.

The 4th Australian Tank Regiment, on it's way to Brisbane, was visited by 6 X Betty and had moderate casualties.

With the convoy having arrived at Luganville the 1st Marines go ashore as fast as they can. Palawan waits for her turn to unload and the Marines are itching to be on dry land again.

The USN's CVs move off to a new area as the threat to Makin has dissolved. O'Bannon is in the lead as she screen her TF.

Back in California Dave has finished off the coffee and Sandy laughs at him. “I thought that you said that this wouldn't happen again?” Dave gives her a sheepish grin and says nothing as he enjoys his last mug for the month. There hasn't been any mail from Bill lately and Sandy is concerned.

The SS Steelhead failed to make a successful attack on an IJN ML at 48 miles E of Buin.

A night time surface combat near Paramushiro Jima resulted in the sinking of a Japanese AV by 5 X DDs of the USN. These DDs were detached from the unloading convoy at Petropavlask.

The SS Guardfish torpedoed what she believed to have been the BB Ise, causing fires, about 250 miles SE of Truk.

Lashio was swept by 21 X P-38G, but they met with no opposition and departed.

Gili Gili was attacked by 48 X B-17E and 62 X B-24D. A CAP of 26 X Zero, 21 X Tojo and 38 X Tony pounced on the bombers and 11 X B-17E were shot down (24 damaged) while 22 X B-24D were destroyed (18 damaged. The Japanese lost 3 X Zero (17 damaged, 2 X Tojo (11 damaged) 5 X Tony (20 damaged) and 2 X Emily trashed on the ground. The base sustained moderate damage. A second wave of bombers consisting of 63 X B-17E and 15 X B-24D arrived a short time later and the CAP of 18 X Zero, 10 X Tojo and 30 X Tony attacked them. 7 X B-17E were destroyed (33 damaged) and 2 X B-24 D went down (11 damaged) while the Japanese lost 4 X Zero (10 damaged), 4 X Tojo (3 damaged) and 3 X Tony (8 damaged). This raid did light damage to the base.

The 4th Australian Tank Regiment was hit by 7 X Betty and sustained very light losses.

The 2nd Marines commenced boarding transports and the men all are wondering where they're bound for. Gunny's platoon settles in and he sees to it that all is in order. Meanwhile Slim is less than enthused because he knows that the 2nd has an upcoming date with the Japanese.

Palawan is busily disgorging men and material and Red sits on a hatch cover watching the proceedings with Lucky by his side. He's feeling guilty as he can't do his job and that means others are picking up the slack. Cookie comes by and asks what's up to which Red just shrugs.

Gil steps off of a train after it stops at Penn Station and he heads for the Ind subway line to take him to the station further south so that he can transfer to the line that'll take him to Brooklyn. He can't wait to see his family and Coney Island.

Men, machines, supplies and fuel pour ashore at Petropavlask. So far the Japanese haven't had a sniff of what's going on. The Soviet troops watch the Americans and both sides are wary of the other. Soon the Soviet base will be run by the Americans.

The RAF reported aircraft losses to date: Germany 18,031 RAF 9,906.

The submarine SS Hoe attacked and hit an IJN CA with a torpedo near Paramushiro Jima, setting it ablaze. The DDs in escort then attacked the Hoe inflicting light systems damage with a couple of near misses. After the sub reloaded her forward tubes she tried, but failed to maneuver into a position to attack a CL.

The 22nd Chinese Division, 15 miles from the river crossing, was attacked by 14 X Betty and neither side sustained any losses.

The 4th Australian Tank Regiment, continuing it's movement towards Townsville was pounced on by 7 X Betty. The unit took light losses and all of the Japanese planes departed unharmed.

The SS Tautog attacked an AK 47 miles NW of Rabaul, striking the vessel with a torpedo which caused fires. The sub then departed the immediate area before being detected by the swarming escorts.

The convoy that has unloaded at Petropavlask is returning to Anchorage. It was spotted by a Japanese naval patrol plane. Washington has notified Moscow of this event and Stalin has ordered all aircraft units to suspend their training cycles and CAPs to be flown. It appears that Operation Sunshine has been discovered and with the cat out of the bag the Allies expect a violent response from Tokyo. The convoy bound for Petropavlask carrying aircraft has been ordered to come about until further orders, which will depend on the Japanese. Petropavlask is now a bastion of American supplies, fuel and troops. The engineering units are swarming over the Russian facilities and construction work has already started to improve and expand everything in sight.

FDR has concluded another meeting with his advisers and all of them are uneasy about Operation Sunshine. They had hoped to get the second convoy in and out undetected, but that's not to be. Now the USN is going to need to shift some muscle into the area as there is a certainty that the Japanese reaction will be swift and violent.

Stalin happily reads the cables from Washington and orders more troops to stand by for relocation as it's entirely possible that the Japanese will attack. The air units are ready to begin a campaign to reduce the forward positions of the Japanese as their orders are to attack at the slightest provocation. The same order is now going out to selected LCUs.

O'Bannon knifes through the waves, detecting no threats and Bill observes another drill and nods when the ready reports come in. The crew has just bested their previous record and seconds shaved here and there can mean life and death.

Dave arrives home with a glum look on his face because the store in town ran out of coffee and ration coupons or not he came up empty. This will be a bad day all around as there is no mail for Sandy.

Hitler addressed the generals of Operation Citadel at Kursk today.

The Japanese managed to have 29 X Zero, 28 X Jack and 29 X Tony up to try and repel the raid. In the madness called battle the Japanese suffered 22 X Zero destroyed, 6 X Jack downed (14 damaged) and 21 X Tony shot down with 4 X Dinah toasted on the ground as the bombers dealt out extremely heavy damage to the base and it's facilities. The ground troops were thought to have sustained heavy casualties. This all came at the price of 4 X Blenheim destroyed (another damaged), 6 X Liberator VI downed (9 damaged), 7 X B-25J destroyed (4 damaged), 2 X B-24D shot down (7 damaged), 30 X P-38G lost and a F-5A destroyed. Though the losses weren't light this raid demonstrated that given decent weather the Allies have the ability to close a major airbase despite the Japanese concentrating a sturdy defense.

The 22nd Chinese Division, 38 miles from the river crossing, was hit by 17 X Betty and 12 X Zero and it had light losses.

The 4th Australian Tank Regiment, despite traveling away from the Japanese bases was struck again for moderate casualties by 8 X Betty.

Maloelap was raided by 32 X PB4Y, of which 1 was downed by AA and 13 others were damaged while the base was lightly damaged, a Dinah was trashed and ground troops took light losses.

Jaluit was attacked by 44 X B-25J, 11 damaged, and 37 X P-38G. The port took light damage.

SS Tautog torpedoed an AP, setting it ablaze about 41 miles NE of Rabaul. Troops were observed to have been jumping into the water. The escorts never found their attacker.

The SS Steelhead was attacked by DDs 151 miles E of Mussau, but she silently evaded her would be tormentors.

The IJN has a surface combat TF hunting for the AKs that departed Petropavlask yesterday. The convoy's DDs have been detached and are trying to screen the helpless merchantmen from the Japanese warships. This is exactly what the Americans had hoped to avoid. At the Pentagon there are more than a few concerned souls who aren't leaving awaiting word about what's going on.

Palawan's convoy sails, returning to Noumea. Red is depressed because there's virtually nothing for him to do. He's sitting on a hatch cover when the radio operator approaches him and says, “Red, as long as you've got time on your hands why not study Morse Code? I could use somebody to help me and I could also show you how the radio works and how to fix things. What do you say?”

Red smiles and replies, “Sounds good to me. Maybe I could become something other than a lump on the deck.”

With that the 2 of them head off together for Red's first lesson. Later that evening Cookie finds Red sitting alone with Lucky at his feet. “What's up? What're you reading?”

Red tells him that he's studying Morse Code and that he's going to become a radio operator.

Maloelap was raided by 28 X PB4Y, 1 destroyed and 2 damaged by AA, who caused light damage to the airbase and destroyed a Dinah on the ground.

Lunga was struck by 48 X B-17E, 14 downed and 20 damaged, and 163 X B-24D, 61 shot down and 41 damaged, while the Japanese had a greeting party of 80 X Zero, 28 X Jack and 18 X Tony on hand. The Japanese lost 15 X Zero (47 damaged), 2 X Jack (21 damaged) and 2 X Tony (14 damaged). The air field was untouched and the port was lightly damaged. This air raid was an Allied disaster, but a needed element as a prelude to Operation King.

The 4th Australian Tank Regiment was subjected to another attack by 8 X Betty, suffering very light losses.

Bill is suffering from not knowing anything other than course changes issued by the TF commander. Being a DD driver is good, but he'd like a little bit better idea of the big picture.

Red has taken to Morse code quickly and Cookie quizzes him. “You're a pretty smart kid,” Cookie says and then adds, “If I didn't know better I'd be thinking about how you've duped me all this time.” The 2 of them share a laugh and then return to studying. Captain Demesa is the real culprit behind this plan because he knows that the shipping company won't allow him to keep a deckhand aboard that can't do the job and that the current radio operator is leaving as soon as they return to Noumea. Red doesn't know it yet, but he'd better learn his new craft fast and well.

Dave returns from getting some parts needed for repairs that he has lined up. He has a waiting list for work, but getting the parts is a problem. An even bigger problem is that there were no letters from Bill for Sandy and she's bound to be upset.

Tonight he'll be toasting to the birth of his homeland and the first round at midnight will be on him. Sylvia watched him, amused, while he struggled with the decorations. She didn't want to bother him by offering to help since he's determined that the loss of an arm will not stop him from doing normal things.

IJN MSWs attacked the SS Tautog 47 miles W of Kavieng, but never really came close to damaging her.

The 29th Chinese Division, about 28 miles from the river crossing, was attacked by 6 X Betty and sustained very light casualties. A little later a short distance from the 29th 12 X Betty and 12 X Zero raided the 55th Chinese Division, and they too had very light losses.

The SS Harder attacked 2 X ML 197 miles E of Sendai, but failed to score a hit.

IJN DDs 123 miles SE of Rabaul unsuccessfully attacked the submarine Grunion.

Stalin angrily demanded that the IJN fleet patrolling the area around Petropavlask be withdrawn from sovereign Soviet waters. The aides and officers are avoiding Stalin as much as possible as he's enraged over the Japanese reaction to Operation Sunshine.

So far no contact has been made as the fleeing APs and AKs head eastwards towards the air umbrella in the Aleutians. The DDs continue to place themselves between the IJN TF and their defenseless charges.

FDR speaks on the radio and tells the American public that the war is going well. He goes on to say that the German and Japanese advances have been halted and that they are now being rolled back. He tells his audience that the Allies will prevail in their struggle to rid the world of tyranny.

Pete awoke today and Sylvia asked how he felt. Pete drank quite a bit, but managed to stay sober and has no hangover. “Maybe next year we'll celebrate the 4th a little more low keyed,” he says.

The O'Bannon continues her screening duties as the TF heads to the SW. Bill expects that they will be making for Luganville or Noumea. He writes another letter to Sandy and sighs as he sees the large stack of them waiting to be posted. When the letter is done he goes to sleep and dreams of the California mountains.

Near the river crossing the 22nd Chinese Division was attacked by Japanese planes and took light losses.

The Allied TF fleeing towards the Aleutians was attacked by Japanese carrier aircraft and many ships were hit by the Vals. Later Kates arrived and bombed more ships. Then the Vals returned and hit another AK.

The Pentagon is a gloomy place as the reports come in and the “I told you so” lines begin to flow. The chance was taken and now the piper will get his due. In hushed voices some are saying that at least the ships being struck are empty. The problem is that the reports are sketchy and conflicting so a true picture of the situation isn't clear yet.

The convoy that was bound for Petropavlask is pulling further back towards Dutch Harbor.

Stalin today threatened Japan with war due to the IJN activities in what the Soviets claim as their territorial waters.

Operation Hedge Cutter continues to move forward as does Operation King.

Operation Citadel started today. It's the largest concentration of military power ever assembled. The Germans have managed to advance with heavy casualties.

The SS Tautog was prowling 31 miles from Rabaul and was attacked by IJN DDs, but she managed to escape without being damaged. Later a couple of PCs tried to nail her and they failed also.

The submarine Salmon was pounced on by DDs 16 miles W of Komandorski Island and she made good her escape with no damage.

The 22nd Chinese Division, not far from the river crossing, was hit by Japanese planes. Both side had no losses.

33 X B-17E Fortress and 8 X B-24D attacked an IJN convoy 47 miles S of Port Moresby. It was believed that 2 X AK suffered bomb damage and were on fire.

207 miles E of Komdorski Island the AK Elihu Thompson was overwhelmed by 18 X Val and 20 X Kate as no less than 5 bombs and 4 fish slammed into her. The shattered ship rapidly settled beneath the waves. A few of the crew managed to clamber onto debris and now in their misery they pray for rescue from the frigid waters.

252 miles NE of Komdorski Island 16 X Val found and attacked the DDs Pope and Paul Jones. A plane was damaged and the destroyers evaded the bombs.

67 miles E of Komdorshi Island 19 X Kate put 2 torpedoes into the AK George S. Boutwell. The stricken ship sank, though some of the crew managed to get into rafts.

Stalin was calmed down by Molotov and the Soviets sent Tokyo a message informing them that Petropavlask can't be resupplied as they have no shipping. Therefore they need to look to the Americans for help. More supplies will be needed in the future to prevent starvation of the troops and if Japan interferes again a war with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics will follow. Meanwhile the initial response from Tokyo to prior cables was one of indifference.

Bill observes his bridge crew calmly going about their jobs and thinks that he has little to do except make the life and death calls. In another couple of hours he will be relieved and then paper work will get his attention.

Stick is rapidly improving his skills with the Corsair and he can't help but tell anybody who will listen how much he loves his bird. What he doesn't do is complain about the boredom of being stationed on the postage stamp known as Wake Island. Flying CAP is a routine that is necessary, but dull. Once in a while he talks with members of the Coronado squadron and they tell him of their flights over Marcus Island. “Now that place is crawling with Japs and lots of ships in and out too,” one of them said just last night.

The 1st Marines are settled into their bivouac area and await the inevitable orders that will place them in harm's way.

The 2nd Marine Division is in a similar state and Slim can't decide which is worse, the boredom of waiting or the terror of combat.

Operation Citadel sees the Germans stalled in the north and gaining in the south.

The escorts of a convoy bound for Brisbane detected and attacked a Japanese sub about 317 miles off the Australian coast. It was suspected that multiple hits were scored.

The 4th Australian Tank Regiment was attacked by 3 X Betty with both sides having no losses.

Due to the distances involved the Operation Hedge Cutter troops are still moving to their assigned areas.

Noumea is looking deserted and the supply dumps are looking depleted, though there's plenty of everything for the base. Luganville, on the other hand is swamped with men, machinery, supplies and fuel with more arriving all of the time. Operation King draws ever closer.

Soviet resistance is stiffening with strong reserves now used as Operation Citadel is a bloody affair for both sides.

The SS Tautog was about 51 miles NW of Rabaul when she suffered through an intense attack by about 5 DDs. She suffered some light damage and just when it appeared that the attack was over the DDs found her again and pummeled her some more. She will return to her base with some light damage to her systems, but her hull integrity is fine.

FDR has fought using 20/20 hindsight and did not criticize his planners for Operation Sunshine. Instead of the stuff hitting the fan the losses were actually acceptable as the op's goal was accomplished. Now the use of some muscle will be required as the Japanese are sure to be keeping a wary eye on their back door.

O'Bannon swings at anchor after refueling. Bill managed to get ashore and when he returned to the ship he found a new stack of letters awaiting him. It's tough, but reading them will have to wait as there is a scheduled briefing later today.

Gil has settled into his quarters at Pitt University. He had a nice visit with his family and a pleasant train ride to Pittsburgh. Now he's getting acquainted with other men at the training center. His classes will begin on Monday morning, the 12th. In the meantime he's managed to pick up duty policing the cigarette butts from the parade grounds around the Pitt Tower. He also discovered that he's very close to Forbes Field and looks forward to getting a chance to see the Pirates play.

Stalin has backed down in his aggressive stance towards the Japanese as he needs more time to ready for a war in the east. He is jubilant that the Germans have been halted and he now demands that his army crush then into dust.

Yesterday the U-185 sank 3 merchant ships off of the Brazilian coast
.

The Germans are exhausted and bloody and unable to advance as Operation Citadel has lost all momentum.

The SS Jack, 16 miles from Onnekotan Jima, tried and failed to attack some IJN warships. The Japanese then turned the tables on her and drove her off with moderate systems damage and flooding. Balky pumps are a problem as she has a long way to Dutch Harbor.

An fighter sweep of Chungking by 13 X Jack, 16 X Tojo, 57 X Tony and a Dinah along for the view was engaged by 34 X P-40N. The swirling aerial ballet resulted in the downing of a Jack, 2 X Tojo, 7 X Tony and the Dinah was damaged at the cost of 20 X Warhawks lost. There was a time that the Chinese were nothing more than brave targets, but no longer though pilot quality still isn't high enough.

Akyab was attacked by 9 X Jack, 15 X Zero, 43 X Betty, 30 X Tojo, 28 X Nick, 11 X Tony, 18 X Helen and 4 X Dinah. 21 X Spitfire rose in opposition and they accounted for a Jack damaged, a Zero downed, 3 X Betty destroyed (another damaged), 9 X Tojo shot down (1 damaged), 4 X Nick destroyed (4 damaged), 7 X Tony downed, a Helen splashed and a Dinah damaged at the cost of 7 X spitfire lost and 8 others shot up. There was moderately heavy damage to the base and ground troops sustained very light casualties. A short time later 38 X Betty arrived with no escort and 15 X Spitfire engaged damaging 2 of the Bettys while losing a Spit and having another damaged. Additional light damage was done to the base and a few more of the troops were added to the casualty list.

The submarine Grunion was on patrol about 139 miles SE of Rabaul when she spotted and tried to attack some IJN DDs, but failed to achieve an advantageous position.

Red has taken to Morse Code very quickly and he's been spending most of his time at the key with the headphones on. Cookie told him that practice makes perfect and Red is determined that when the Palawan next sails it'll be his job on the radio. He's gone so far as to check the inventory of spare parts and was alarmed to see that it was in total disarray. Once he got everything organized he made a list and gave it to Captain Demesa, who smiled and told Red to give him a few days to get everything. In the meantime Lucky and Cookie spend time together ashore, taking long walks in the mornings and early evenings.

Bill has read every letter and is in good spirits, even though he misses Sandy more than ever. The meeting of ship's captains went well last night and Bill now knows that the USN's primary goal is to draw out the KB and engage it in a battle that will enable Operation King to proceed.

Stick spent an uneventful day flying CAP again, but has grown to love his plane. He's starting to feel as one with the bird and is now doing things without thought.

Gil watches the long line of men silently circling the flagpole as punishment for various minor infractions. In the July heat he's determined to avoid this happening to him. He's disappointed that the Pirates are playing in Brooklyn right now as he'd love to have seen a game today as it's beautiful outside. Instead he heads to Schenley Park for a walk.

Operation Husky started with the US 82nd and British 1st Airborne Divisions landing in Sicily.

The Russians claimed that the German attack that was Operation Citadel has been repulsed.

Chungking was raided by 12 X Jack, 14 X Tojo, 50 X Tony and a Dinah. Against this armada the Chinese managed to put up 19 X P-40N of which they lost 8 and had another 2 damaged. The Japanese lost a Jack (another damaged), 4 X Tojo, 5 X Tony and the Dinah was damaged. Exchanges like this have to hurt the Japanese cause.

The O'Bannon continues to swing lazily at anchor at Luganville and the crew is getting liberty, though there's not much to do ashore.

The Benham currently lies at Tarawa and the men are bored.

Gil is getting increasingly nervous about radio school that is now only 2 days away. He spends another day and discovered the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. He spent hours wandering through it, marveling at the plants and flowers. He thinks that this is stuff that a boy from Brooklyn never got a chance to see. He learns that it was opened in 1893 and he wonders why he never visited the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Towards the end of the day he returned to Pitt University in time for chow. His day relaxed him and his fears of failure have miraculously gone.

Captain Demesa asks Red if he thinks that he can handle the job as radio operator for the Palawan and Red replies, “I can do this and I'll only get better at it as time goes on. There's nothing that I can't learn to do.” Red points to a stack of book on radios and how to repair them. “Besides, sir, I'm a lucky guy.” Demesa tells him to keep up the good work and that the job is his.

Combat

The S-34 was 39 miles SE of PM when she tried to get a shot in on an AK, but only got herself attacked by the escorts. Luckily for the sub there were only MSWs in the escort and she escaped.

Kunming was raided by 8 X Tojo and 60 X Helen. The Chinese had a CAP aloft comprised of 23 X I-16c. The swirling action in the skies witnessed another good account given by the Chinese as they downed 2 X Tojo (2 damaged) and 11 X Helen (22 damaged). They lost 3 fighters and had 6 others damaged while 3 X B-25J were destroyed on the ground as the base took moderate damage. Ground troops sustained light casualties.

Mandalay was attacked by 63 X Liberator VI and 39 X B-24D. Unfortunately the fighter escort never appeared and the Japanese CAP of 21 X Zero, 15 X Jack, 5 X Tojo and 19 Tony tore into the bombers. 8 X Zero (5 damaged), 4 X Jack (7 damaged), a Tojo (another damaged), 3 X Tony (11 damaged) and 2 X Dinah on the ground were destroyed. The base took heavy damage while the bombers lost 25 X Liberator VI (13 damaged) and 5 X B-24D (13 damaged). Allied HQs after the debriefings determined that if the fighters had been there the raid would've been a huge success. A bomber pilot was heard to say that only the brass could come up with such an evaluation of the mission.

Gili Gili was hit by 43 X B-17E, 59 X B-24D and 5 X F-5A and they ran into no CAP. 2 X Emily were destroyed on the ground as the bombs rained down on the airfield doing moderately heavy damage with numerous secondary explosions. 6 X B-17E and 8 X B-24D were damaged by AA.

The SS Puffer was about 77 miles SE of Kagoshima when she spotted and attacked an ML, hitting it with a fish that sank the vessel quickly.

Tomorrow classes begin for Gil and he's ready as he'll ever be. One of the guys tells him that he'll get promoted and get flight pay once he's out of the school. Gil tells him that he's got gunnery school to attend after radio school as B-17 radio operators pull double duty. After taking care of his bunk Gil heads out to see some of the sights and catches a ride to The Point. This is where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers join to form the Ohio. He'd enjoy the view more, but the air is dirty from all of the steel mills churning out their contributions to the war effort.

Bill is still trying to get over the number of ships gathered at Luganville. More are arriving all of the time and the word is that the USN's carrier strength here will be greater than anything imagined before the war. He read and reread Sandy's letters and today he just can't think of anything to write so he writes that and starts to tell her how much he misses her. Before he's done there are 2 pages completed. He calls an orderly and asks the sailor to post it for him.

Red is healing and busily reads radio manuals and practices his Morse Code. Cookie is amazed at how fast Red has gotten the hang of things. Captain Demesa summoned Red to his cabin and informed him that the company has authorized Red's new position and a nice pay raise too. Red happily returns to his favorite spot on deck and one of the crew says, “I always knew you were a smart kid. I knew you'd figure out a way to get out of loading and unloading those sweltering holds. I just never figured that you'd become our good luck radio man.” He gives Red's head a rub, claps him on the back, wishes him luck and heads off to catch a lighter that'll take him ashore.

Sandy tries not to show her dismay at not getting any mail in such a long time. Dave tells her that's what she gets for falling for a navy man.

Von Kluge and Von Manstein both urged Hitler to call off the attack known as Citadel, but he refused.

Combat

The SS Grunion tried to attack some DDs about 141 miles SW of Rabaul, but came up empty. The destroyers never knew they were at risk.

Mandalay was subjected to another attack, this time by 24 X Blenheim, 37 B-25J and 79 X P-38G. The Japanese had 15 X Zero, 12 X Jack, 3 X Tojo and 13 X Tony up today and the fighting was bloody. 14 X Zero downed, 4 X Jack destroyed (4 damaged), 3 X Tojo killed and 15 X Tony shot down at the cost of 2 X Blenheim downed (1 damaged), a B-25J shot down and 12 X P-38G killed (5 damaged). The base took moderate damage and ground losses were put at very light.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, still at the river crossing, was attacked by 11 X B-25J and the unit had light losses. All of the Chinese planes departed safely.

The SS Shad tried to attack an ML approximately 57 miles SW of Tokyo, but never was able to get into position.

“Take a seat and let's get started. This is your first day of radio school and I already have bad news. We only have 10 books for the entire class so we'll have to work on the buddy system.” The man teaching the class is a civilian and he goes on about this and that. When class ends Gil has managed to arrange to see a book after chow this evening. The instructor assured them that the books would be available in sufficient numbers very soon.

The Soviets counter attacked the Germans today as Operation Citadel has failed miserably.

Combat

The SS S-18 was attacked by many MSWs 128 miles SE of Gili Gili, but they never came close to damaging the sub.

The SS Sturgeon attacked an AK 42 miles SE of Gili Gili and set her ablaze with a torpedo hit. The escorts, only MSWs, never detected the sub.

Kunming was swept by 7 X Tojo and they were opposed by 17 X I-16c. The conflict saw both sides suffer no losses.

Mandalay was swept by 24 X P-38G who met with no opposition so they departed after searching the area for nonexistent targets.

Jaluit's port was bombed by 31 X PB4Y and 41 X P-38G. 5 of the bombers were damaged by AA while the port took moderate damage and ground casualties were estimated as very light. Later 44 X B-25J, escorted by 41 X P-38G also attacked the port, doing additional light damage. A bomber was lost and 7 others damaged by the ground fire.

The SS Grunion attacked some MSWs 17 miles from Rabaul, hitting one of them with 2 fish. The MSW sank almost immediately as she was obliterated by the explosions. The sub retired to continue her patrol without detection.

The SS Jack continues to limp to Dutch Harbor, unable to dive due to leaks. She is expected to make it as she now is in “friendly” waters.

When Gil arrived in the classroom today the instructor had been replaced by a sergeant who introduced himself as their new instructor. Books were passed out to those not having any and they immediately got to work. It seems that books were there, but the instructor hadn't requested enough of them. They turn to the business of Morse Code and are told that they will eat and sleep Morse until they can send and receive with no problems.

O'Bannon has had a few of her crew replaced and they now have a problem. It seems that one of the new men is from the back country in the south and it's very hard to understand him. This wouldn't be so bad, but he is responsible for relaying orders given on the bridge over the intercom system. Bill and Frank immediately grasp the gravity of the situation and Bill says, “If we had all stations manned by people who spoke like that the problem wouldn't be, but we have to reassign this man. I can't picture orders being confused in the heat of battle because of the way he talks.”

The Palawan sits in the anchorage at Noumea and the crew comes and goes, but Red keeps his nose in the books. Finally a couple of the crew insist that he join them ashore for a diversion. Hours later the 3 of them return drunk as skunks.

Frank nods and says that he'll take care of it immediately.

The British took Augusta and Ragusa today.

Hitler ordered Operation Citadel suspended and troops were ordered to the west.

Combat

Jaluit was hit by 38 X B-24D, 1 of which was damaged, for moderate damage to the port.

Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, at the river crossing, was again raided by 12 X B-25J and sustained light casualties.

Strangely Chungking was visited by 3 X Jack and a Dinah and 32 X P-40N pounced on them, sending all of the Jacks to their ancestors and damaging the fleeing Dinah. All of the Chinese fighters returned to base untouched.

In less than 1 month plans call for the commencement of Operation Hedge Cutter. Anything less than the expulsion of the Japanese from Australia will be considered a failure.

Stalin tells his generals that an attack on the Japanese in 1944 is inevitable. “We will provoke them into attacking us and then we will crush them. In the meantime we will continue to pound the Germans into dust. I want to see my armies in Berlin in less than 2 years time. If it doesn't happen I will have to find new officers to replace the old ones who failed the Rodina.”

Combat

The SS S-39 located an ML and spent the better part of the morning working her self into a position to attack it. Their patience paid off when a favorable firing solution was obtained as a torpedo struck the ML causing fires and heavy damage. S-39 continued her patrol when radar detected another ship approaching. It was an ML, but this time there was no effective attack made.

The SS Sturgeon spotted an AP and MSW, but failed to get in an attack on them. The sub continued to track her prey all day and in the early evening tried and again failed to effectively attack.

Jaluit was raided by 36 X B-24D and a supply dump was hit. There were no planes damaged.

The Chinese, with X B-25J, attacked the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, their favorite target, and inflicted light casualties at no cost to themselves.

The Harder, near Onnekotan Jima, slipped into the anchorage and put a torpedo into a heavy cruiser. It caused a fire and did heavy damage to the ship, believed to have been the Suzuya. Harder then made good her escape without taking any damage from the ill aimed depth charges dropped.

Gil has been a quick study on Morse and he has a knack with the key too. Soon they will be getting radios with problems are will be expected to make the needed fixes. He hopes to be able to go and see the Pirates hosting the St Louis Cardinals on Sunday, if all goes well.

The Palawan continues to sit at Noumea awaiting orders. Red has become pretty good at sending and receiving on the radio, but fixing it will be a challenge as all the books in the world won't teach what real life problems can throw at you. He goes to see a doctor with Cookie and Lucky in tow and is told in another couple of weeks or so the cast will be removed and he should be good as new. That sits well with Red and he suggests that they celebrate with a beer.

Bill has little to do except the mundane paper work that comes with command and of course writing to Sandy. He got a few letters today and enjoyed reading about Dave's enduring coffee rationing with great difficulty.

The 2nd Marine Division rests in it's assigned area and Slim notes that not only is the harbor crowded with ships, but the port is flooded with vehicles, supplies and men. Gunny is like a mother hen checking his men making sure that all is in order. Luganville will be their residence until the order is given to board ships that will take them to some place that the Japanese will be.

The 1st Marines are bivouaced near the 2nd and the men compare what they've been through so far in the war and what they expect next.

Combat

The SS Blackfish, on patrol approximately 147 miles NE of Truk, located a TK and set it ablaze with a torpedo hit. The escorts managed to rattle the sub a bit.

Mandalay was swept by 12 X P-38G, but the Japanese offered no opposition.

Jaluit had it's port bombed again today by 27 X B-24D, of which 4 were damaged by AA. The port and ground troops suffered lightly.

The IJA 13th Division, at the road junction, was attacked by 9 X B-25J and 13 X P-40N. Casualties were very light and all planes were unharmed. Not to much later, nearby, the IJA 6th Division was hit by 13 X B-25J and 13 X P-40N. Casualties were light and all planes departed intact. Later in the day the 11th Ind. Brigade, in the same general area, was attacked by 21 X B-25J and 5 X P-40N. The raid had no effect and all planes left in one piece.

It is expected that the SS Jack will make Dutch Harbor tomorrow as her struggle to overcome the damage she sustained is ending.

Stick flew CAP for a couple of hours today and as usual nothing of any interest happened. He did not that there has been an increase in the number of ships calling at Wake, especially subs.

Bill sits in a bar with Frank enjoying a cool drink and they talk of the future. “You know that battle wagons and carriers have different ward rooms for senior and junior officers while the cruisers have just one and the captain almost always takes his meals in his cabin, right? Well, if I ever get a cruiser I'm going to dine with my officers. It can only be a good thing for morale and keep the skipper in touch with what's going on,” Bill says.

“I agree with you on that,” says Frank. “Hell I'll be happy to get my own tin can to drive.”

Slim spent the morning wandering around and ran into some men from the 1st Marines. They talked for about an hour and then he left. Slim is getting depressed because it seems that everybody that has seen combat says the same thing about the Japanese. Nobody understands the mindset that demands death instead of surrender. One comment sticks in Slim's mind, “No matter how many of them we killed they wouldn't give up. They had virtually no ammo, no food, no water and no hope but they fought on. It makes no sense.”

The Canadians took Caltagirone while the Americans took Agringento today and the British finally took Primosole bridge and advanced on Catania.
