Combat

The submarine S-39 was about 137 miles from Derby when it was attacked by DDs and suffered moderate systems damage along with moderate flooding. She will now make for Perth and from there on to a yard.

Kwajalein was bombed by 30 X PB4Y and the CAP of 15 X Tojo and 18 X Tony tried to stop them. Between air to air and ground the Japanese suffered: 5 X Tojo damaged, a Tony lost (10 damaged), 3 X Betty destroyed, a Mavis trashed and an Alf destroyed. The base was lightly damaged and ground troops took light casualties. 10 of the bombers went down and another 10 were damaged.

Jaluit was raided by 11 X B-25J and 10 X P-38G to no effect. Ground fire downed 2 of the Mitchells and damaged 4 others.

At the river crossing the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was hit by 25 X B-25J and both sides had no casualties.

The SS Triton was between Russell Island and Tulagi when she attacked an AK. The ship suffered a torpedo hit which caused heavy damage and fires. The escorts, MSWs, never located the sub.

About 42 miles from Rabaul DDs located and attacked the submarine Grouper, scoring several hits. Grouper's systems damage is moderate, but the flooding is grave. She will try for Luganville even though Cairns is 60 miles closer because the transit is considered a safer one.

The SS Wahoo was on patrol about 59 miles from Rabaul when suddenly she was pounced on by IJN DDs, but they never managed to effectively locate and pin the sub.

The SS Jack berthed at Dutch Harbor and once the flooding is stopped she'll head for the US for extensive repairs.

Gunny has Slim in tow as they walk along the beach. They stop by some Sea Bees and Gunny asks about the torpedo juice that they're making. A fast purchase and he has Slim on the way to forgetting his worries.

Saturday afternoon and there is Gil policing the parade grounds for some petty infraction that was discovered during a surprise inspection. He feels like he's melting in the summer heat, but takes comfort in knowing that tomorrow he'll be at Forbes Field to watch a ballgame. He only wishes it was his beloved Yankees, but Pittsburgh is a National League town and that'll never happen except for a World Series. He reflects on all the trouble he went through as a kid rooting for the Yankees, who play in the Bronx, when he's from Brooklyn and the Dodgers rule the roost there. His childhood hero was Lou Gehrig so how could he ever have been a Dodgers fan?

Phil stands at the rail of the Benham awaiting the return of CDR Worthington in hopes that they have new orders that will take them to where the action is.

The AS Fulton lies at the wharf in Perth's harbor enabling a growing contingent of subs to operate from there.

Combat

Mandalay was swept by 13 X Corsair IV and a snooping F-5A, but there was no opposition so the fighters departed.

Lunga was visited by 46 X B-17E, 186 X B-24D and 8 X PBM but the Japanese met them with an aggressive CAP made up of 66 X Zero, 33 X Jack and 15 X Tony. The Japanese flew into the bomber boxes despite the concentrated defensive fire and 10 X Zero were flamed (42 damaged), 9 X Jack went down (15 damaged) and 2 X Tony were destroyed (11 damaged). They did prevent a single bomb from falling on target as the bomber formations were ravaged. 10 X B-14E met their doom (26 damaged) and 66 X B-24 were destroyed (54 damaged).

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, at the river crossing, was attacked by 25 X B-25J and sustained light losses. None of the Chinese planes were touched.

The IJA 6th Division, in the area of the road junction was attacked by 18 X B-25J and 5 X P-40N. Casualties were light and the planes departed safely. Almost at the same time, nearby, the 8th Engineer Regiment was pounced on by 13 X B-25J and 11 X P-40N. The unit had light losses and no planes were damaged.

The USN's muscle silently slips out of Luganville for a raid on Lunga. O'Bannon is one of many ships in the vast armada. The USN hopes that they can force the IJN to come out a give battle.

Slim has a doozy of a hangover, but his state of mind is better. Gunny smiles inwardly thinking that his treatment worked. He can't have his veterans spooking the replacements.

Gil, as planned, is sitting at Forbes Field. There is a man next to him with his daughter and everything the Pirates do the man laments. In the top of the 3rd inning the Cardinals draw first blood by scoring a run, which the Pirates get back in the bottom half of the inning. The man is upset because the Bucs left 2 men on base. The next inning the Cards score 2 more runs and the man, Harry, has nothing to cheer about until the Bucs get 1 back in the bottom of the 6th. All goes straight to hell according to Harry as the Cards score 4 times in the top of the 7th and the Bucs get one back in the bottom of the inning. Nothing else happens until the bottom of the 9th when the Bucs score another run, but fall short and lose 7-4. Harry and Gil chat a bit until his daughter, Elaine, finally gets him to go. Gil thinks that she's pretty and says good-bye to them both. Later that night Gil's new pals tease him about not asking Elaine out for a date. “How could I do that with her father there?” he asks.

Combat

The SS Greenling was about 210 miles SW of Nagasaki when she was attacked by a pair of MLs that she was stalking. The sub has sustained light systems damage, but she's taking on water and damage control parties are struggling to get the upper hand against the sea.

Rangoon was swept by 19 X Corsair IV and an F-5A lightning was snooping around. The Japanese put up 3 X Rufe, 9 X Jack, 6 X Zero, 9 X Tojo and 9 X Tony and the Corsairs feasted. 2 X Rufe destroyed, a Jack downed, 2 X Zero torched, 3 X Tojo shot down and 2 X Tony also went down at the cost of a Corsair destroyed and 2 others damaged. The snooper was damaged also.

A little later 21 X P-38G swooped in on Rangoon and a CAP of 1 X Rufe, 8 X Jack, 4 X Zero, 6 X Tojo and 7 X Tony met them. A Tojo was downed and 3 X Tony were destroyed while 3 X Lightning were shot down and another was damaged.

Mandalay was raided by 23 X Blenheim, 62 X Liberator VI, 54 X B-25J, 47 X B-24D and 63 X P-38G. There was only AA offered as a defense and a Mitchell was damaged. Ground troops sustained light losses while oil facilities were struck heavily and the airfield took heavy damage.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, still at the river crossing, was visited by 19 X B-25J and took light casualties. All of the planes retired intact.

The IJA 13th Division, in the area of the road junction was bombed by 15 X B-25J and 5 X P-40N. The troops lost lightly and all of the planes departed safely.

A short time later, not far away, the IJA 11th Ind. Brigade was pounced on by 6 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N. The troops sustained very light casualties.

A pop quiz today caught many of the students off guard and they didn't do as well as expected of them. Gil read and sent at an acceptable rate and the instructor gave him a pat on the back saying that he should keep up the good work.

Slim quietly puts his MG section through it's paces and is satisfied with the performance of the men. They really took to heart the part where he told them that a few seconds can be the difference between life and death. He didn't mention that a healthy dose of luck doesn't hurt either.

Red has procured an old, nonfunctional radio and he's busily trying to fix it when Lucky comes bounding into the radio shack and knocks the parts all over the place. “Did you have to do that? Go get Cookie,” says Red and the dog takes off for the galley.

The CVTF moves towards the Solomon Islands, looking for trouble. This will be the first true test of the USN's new strategy of looking for trouble and reducing the enemy's air power through attrition. From the bridge of the O'Bannon the men take comfort in seeing so many planes in the air. “To think they're all ours,” beams one of the lookouts.

The SS Triton was about 61 miles NW of Tulagi when she tried and failed to get an attack in on an AK that was escorted by many MSWs.

At Shortlands a few DDs discovered mines, one of them the hard way.

The SS Wahoo 39 miles off of Rabaul put 2 torpedoes into a TK, sinking it.

Mandalay was bombed by 9 X Blenheim, 67 X Liberator VI, 61 X B-25J, 48 X B-24 and 65 X P-38G. AA damaged 2 of the Liberator VIs and a Mitchell as the oil facilities and the airbase were heavily damaged. Ground losses were placed as heavy.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF got it's daily dose from 20 X B-25J and took moderate casualties. No planes were damaged.

The IJA 13th Division in the area of the road junction was bombed by 21 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N which inflicted light losses on the Japanese. Almost at the same time the 6th Division, 5 miles away was bombed by 6 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N, resulting in light Japanese losses. Both raids retired safely.

The USN CVs continue to cruise towards their designated area of operation in the hope of engaging the enemy.

Ed's Old Gals are holding an offset gunnery practice session and he's impressed with their accuracy.

The troops and supplies continue to pour into Luganville.

“You dope,” she replies, “It's for our baby. I'm pregnant.”

He drops the paper and rushes to where she's sitting and pulls her to him. “Why didn't you tell me?” he asks.

“I just did,” is her reply.

Combat

The SS S-44 tried to attack a CL and some DDs, but failed and instead the Japanese turned the table on her. Later the sub was again attacked, no damage was done.

Allied DDs tried to kill a sub, but believed that the prey slipped away unharmed. Later another ASW TF pounced on what was thought to be the same sub and pounded it with depth charges. It was thought that multiple hits were scored, but not confirmed. The same contact was attacked by more DDs who claimed to have scored at least a hit.

The SS Shad attacked an AK and hit it with a torpedo. The MSWs that comprised the escort never located Shad.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was pounded by 21 X B-25J for moderate casualties. The Chinese planes then left undamaged.

The SS Grouper was attacked by DDs.

An IJN fleet of 3 X CV, 1 X CVL, 2 X CVE, 6 X BB, 5 X AV, 1 X CA, 4 X CL, 9 X AS, 24 X DD and 5 X APD was spotted . If the USN CVs can get into position to launch an attack the mission could turn out to be an overwhelming success, or an unmitigated disaster. The commanders orders all ships to prepare for action tomorrow. The search planes will concentrate on where it is thought the IJN fleet could reach and the CVs will have their decks loaded and ready to strike.

Observers at Derby reported that a ML sunk in the harbor today. Of course the local populace angered the Japanese by not hiding their joy.

Stick loves flying, but like the rest of the Flying Deuces he's bored. Wake isn't exactly a garden spot and between the boring routine on the ground and flying boring CAPs life has been, boring. Suddenly a Sea Bee rushes by with a rifle, closely followed by 2 line mechanics bearing arms. Stick gives chase to see what's going on and when they get down to the water the Sea Bees opens fire. Stick spots the target, a large shark. After emptying a full clip from his M1 the Sea Bees flops down in the sand watching the 2 mechanics firing. When they're done Stick is laughing at the 3 of them. “You guys certainly are crack shots. Oh there goes your target back out to sea. Maybe if you go for a swim he'll get his revenge.” All of them are now laughing. A break in the boredom, no matter how short, is more than welcome.

Dave is very happy today as he's actually managed to get some new, retreaded, tires to sell. People have been riding around on tires that show the cord. He calls a friend of his who has been waiting for this and when Dave tells him the price the man says, “You fool, don't you know that people would pay much more?” Dave tells him that he's just not like that and they agree that tomorrow morning the man will stop by the garage to have the tires installed.

Pete is so excited about the news and when he goes to tell his in-laws they laugh at him saying that he was the last one to know. Milt suggests that a celebratory drink is in order, Jac nods in agreement and Pete says he'll buy.

The SS Halibut was attacked by IJN DDs about 127 miles SE of Buin.

The IJA 12th Ind. Brigade, near the road junction, was pounced on by 33 X B-25J and 20 P-40N who inflicted light casualties on the unit. No planes were damaged in the attack.

Jaluit's port was targeted by 9 X B-25J and 11 X P-38G, but the planes couldn't spot the target due to cloud cover and dropped no ordinance on the base as a result. The Japanese AA fire managed to find and damage 2 of the bombers though.

The units of Operation Hedge Cutter are in the final stages of arriving at their designated areas. After a short time for rest and maintenance the attack will begin.

The USN continues it's hunt, but so far it's been a fruitless endeavor.

Stalin spent the day in conference with his eastern commanders and they inform him that they have gone ahead with the initial stages of an as of yet unnamed operation. They promise Stalin that 3 infantry regiments and a base force will be in position before the winter sets in. As long as the Japanese adhere to the agreement in place they will not send recon flights over Okha. By the time the Americans send a force it'll be to late for a strong response and then a 2 front war will exist. The way the Germans are being ground up this doesn't concern Stalin.

Pete is already insisting that Sylvia take things easy and stop working at the hospital. “I can't do that now,” she says to him. “Once the Japanese are out of Australia I'll quit there, not before. I'm sure that you understand that I want to do whatever I can to help my country when it needs it.” Pete nods and asks that she just try to take things a little easier for now.

Gil and some of his pals plan on going to the USO club on Friday or Saturday night to break up the routine. Some of them brag about how they are with the women. Of course this draws the usual response and laughter.

Patton's 2nd Armored Division took Palermo.

SS Haddock was 119 miles SW of Rabaul when she attacked 2 APs and torpedoed one of them. The ship was on fire as the Haddock gave the DDs on escort the slip. Troops were observed leaping into the sea.

Mandalay was attacked by 76 X Liberator VI, 40 X B-24D and 59 X P-38G. The manpower suffered heavily and all planes departed safely.

Tulagi was subjected to a raid by 28 X B-17E and 99 X B-24D, but a LRCAP out of Lunga consisting of 65 X Zero and 9 X Jack jumped the bombers. 12 X Zero went down (31 damaged) and 4 X Jack were damaged while 8 X B-17E were destroyed (12 damaged) and 21 X B-24D were shot down (43 damaged). The port was moderately damaged and a huge secondary explosion was observed.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, still in the same position, was attacked by 25 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N. All of the planes departed with no damage after inflicting moderate casualties on the Japanese.

The 11th Ind. Brigade, near the road junction, was bombed by 14 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N. Casualties were light and no planes were hurt. At almost the same time, not to far away, the 15th Mixed Brigade was attacked by 24 X B-25J and 13 X P-40N. Casualties were light and no planes suffered any damage.

Gil is breezing his way through training. He's a natural with Morse and loves the technical aspects of the radios.

Red stands in the pilot house with Captain Demesa and says, “Sending and receiving Morse Code is a snap. If we have troubles with the radio I think that I'll be able to figure it out. Thanks for giving me this chance.” Demesa smiles at him and nods. He's happy to keep this crew together for as long as possible as there's no real troubles, especially now, since most of the troops have been moved forward to Luganville. Even the bars and restaurants are treating the Americans better now.

Pete got a letter from Will today and is saddened at the news that the Pirates had to break up. He immediately pulls a sheet of paper out of his desk drawer and begins to write a reply telling of all that's happened to him, including marriage and a baby on the way.

Slim stumbled into a game of craps and before he was done he had padded his pocket pretty well. With his new found gains he decides to visit the Sea Bees and see what can be had.

Two letters arrived today for Sandy and she eagerly tore into them and savored each and every word. She wonders if the USN will ever see fit to give Bill some leave. She mentions it to Dave and he says that being on a ship that goes down is one way to get leave. She gives him a cold stare in return.

The submarine Wahoo tried to attack a TK about 71 miles from Rabaul, but couldn't achieve a good firing solution.

32 X B-25J and 19 X P-40N jumped the IJA 15th Mixed Brigade in the road junction area. Japanese casualties were light and no planes were harmed.

Jaluit had it's port raided by 41 X B-24D and 4 of the bombers were damaged by ground fire. No bombs were dropped on target due to cloud cover.

The USN CVs continue their fruitless hunt and make a rendezvous with some AOs. Nobody wants to let the fuel bunkers get to low in case combat should appear.

Slim awakens with a first class hangover. He thinks that he shared some of the whiskey with men of his section, but can't be sure until one of the men says to him thanks for yesterday's festivities. Well at least they had a good time with his winnings.

Sandy sits on a rocky ledge that affords a view of a distant valley. This spot is one of her favorites and as her mind comes back from her drifting she continues to write to Bill.

A letter arrives at the Palawan for Cookie and Red. It's from their lawyer in Honolulu. The gist of it is that some land has come up for sale on the island of Maui. It's beachfront and he recommends it to them. They looked at this property long ago and the 2 of them decide to pull the trigger and buy it as long as the bank is making the money available to them. “It doesn't matter that when the war finally ends we'll either be dead or in debt,” laughs Red.

Window (radar jamming foil strips) was first used today by the RAF on a Hamburg raid.

The SS S-44 underwent a weak ASW attack about 19 miles off of Munda Point. She was undamaged as the Japanese DDs never really had he location pinned down. Later in the day the SS Finback was attacked a short distance away by DDs. She continued on her way with only rattled nerves.

The SS Triton was hammered by DDs while patrolling 40 miles from Tulagi, in the Slot. She sustained light systems damage and has moderate flooding and will make for port for repairs.

Once again the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was bombed by 25 X B-25J and 11 X P-40N. Casualties were light and all planes departed from the milk run safely.

Ed's Old Gals were spotted by Dinahs as was the replenishment TF and it's shadowing escorts. It is believed that the main CV TFs weren't spotted, but action is expected as IJN capital units were sighted off of Tassaforonga.

Ed sits in his chair on the bridge reading all of the reports and he expects that tomorrow will hold a busy time for both sides.

Thanks to Captain Demesa, Cookie and Red are able to use the company's communications in the shipping office that's in Noumea. They have sent an authorization to the lawyer enabling him to buy the land for them at the stated, or a lower price.

Gil went to the USO Club last night and bumped into that girl from the ballgame. Elaine was her name. They danced a couple of times and chatted a bit. It was nice as Gil hasn't had much contact with females since his induction into the Army. Today he caught another baseball game and saw the Bucs pound the Brooklyn Dodgers 7-1. The game was over, for all intents and purposes, after the 2nd inning as the Pirates built a 5-0 lead and never looked back.

Today it was the USAAF's turn to bomb Hamburg.

Mussolini was arrested today. Badoglio is now the Prime Minister of Italy. Hitler ordered troops south to disarm the Italians.

The IJN has been spotted and kept under a watchful eye, but it manages to stay out of range.

The 4E bombers out of Luganville hammered the air field at Lunga very heavily before the Navy made it's showing with a fighter sweep and then an attack on the air field causing additional moderate damage.

Today was a banner day for the USN's naval air as it tackled the Japanese in the skies over Guadalcanal and inflicted very heavy losses on them. This is the first time out of the barn for the new Hellcats and the only regrets are that there aren't more to go around, yet.

PO Matsuyama of F3/Ominato Daitai bailed out and landed in the lap of a Coast Watcher named Nigel Smythe. Smythe has 2 locals with him and he tells them to keep an eye on their prisoner and if he tries to escape, kill him. Smythe has enjoyed today's show as he's on a hilltop and with his binoculars he can see the air base in bad shape and a lot fewer planes on it. He finds out that his prisoner is an ace with 17 kills. Maybe I can get more out of this arrogant so and so, he thinks to himself.

The S-44 was detected and attacked by a couple of DDs 18 miles SE of Munda Point.

Jaluit was raided by 47 X B-25J and 46 X P-38G resulting in moderate damage to the port and a couple of large secondary explosions thought to be supply depots. All of the planes departed intact.

The USN TFs are busily replenishing the aircraft complements while steaming towards Luganville. Japanese planes are keeping a close eye on them and IJN CVs lurk to the NW, out of range. It is planned that the CVs will fill out their air complements with both planes and pilots before another thrust is made. To engage the KB after the air battles of the day before and their losses would be folly.

Nigel's POW, PO Matsuyama, speaks a little English and Nigel tells him that if any attempt to escape is made his native helpers will hunt him down and kill him. Matsuyama looks at the 2 native men nearby and has no doubts about what his fate would be. For now he'll stay put, he decides.

The brass at Noumea is more than pleased with the results of the 26th and know that if the KB had thrown itself into the fray alongside the LBA the results could've been very different. As soon as the ships replenish at Luganville they will sortie once more to hunt the KB. This time another CV will be carrying the new Hellcats adding even more muscle to the formidable force. Additional warships are on their way and should arrive within a couple of weeks. In the meantime the IJN must be brought to battle or offensive plans will have to wait.

Kesselring orders preparations made to evacuate Sicily.

The submarine Finback was attacked by IJN ASW assets, but she escaped without damage.

The SS Grouper has finally limped into port. As crowded as Luganville is a berth pier side was waiting for the sub. She has moderate systems damage and heavy flooding, but now a repair ship will go to work on her relieving the sub's exhausted crew. After the temporary repairs are made Grouper will head for a shipyard, as yet to be determined, for additional repairs.

Nigel sits staring at his prisoner wondering how he's going to manage things. He can't just kill the bugger, but a prisoner? How is he supposed to keep a step ahead of the Japanese patrols, do his job and watch this man? A third native has joined his small group and makes a show of sharpening his rather large knife. Matsuyama can't believe that he survived bailing out only to be captured by the enemy on an island help by his country's forces. He sighs as he here's the drone of a couple of planes passing high overhead.

The USN warships are waiting their turns to guzzle the fuel they need before another voyage. O'Bannon finds herself on patrol outside of the harbor. The Benham has been refueled and some of the crew have been granted liberty. New planes are being hoisted onto the CVs to make good their losses and 1 CV is having her Wildcats replaced with new Hellcats.

Slim watches the huge fleet milling around in what appears to be confusion when Gunny appears and sits down next to him. “Think they'll be heading out again any time soon?” asks Slim. Gunny tells him that somehow the Marine Corps doesn't think he needs to know.

The RAF bombed Hamburg.

The SS Pompon was attacked by IJN DDs about 16 miles NE of Russell Island, but she managed to evade her would be tormentors. A little while later she tried to attack a couple of APs, but failed to attain an acceptable firing solution. A few hours later the Japanese located and attacked her again, to no effect. Pompon then tried to get an attack in on an AP, but failed and for her efforts she underwent a brutal depth charge attack.

The SS S-18, on patrol 71 miles NE of Woodlark, spotted a couple of APs and managed to torpedo one of them setting it on fire. Japanese troops were spotted jumping into the water. Almost immediately shark fins were spotted and a chill ran down the spine of more than one of the subs crew as they know it could be them.

Mandalay was raided by 76 X Liberator VI and their escort of 63 X P-38G and the Japanese had 22 X Zero, 36 X Jack and 32 X Tony aloft to oppose the attack. In the madness that followed 10 X Zero were shot down (6 damaged), 10 X Jack destroyed (16 damaged) and 10 X Tony went down (9 damaged) while the attackers lost 7 bombers (28 damaged) and 32 Lightnings were destroyed. The airfield suffered moderate damage and there were numerous secondary explosions. Ground troop losses were placed at moderate.

Jaluit was attacked by 29 X PB4Y and 51 X P-38G. A bomber was lost and 3 others were damaged due to AA while the port sustained moderate damage.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was visited by 21 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N who inflicted light losses on the Japanese unit while all of the planes departed safely.

Lunga was visited by 162 X B-24D and 34 X B-17E and the CAP of 48 X Zero, 1 X Zeke, 16 X Jack and 27 X Tony swarmed over the bomber boxes. 6 X Zero went down (24 damaged), the Zeke went down in flames, a Jack was destroyed (14 damaged) and 3 X Tony were shot down (20 damaged). The Americans lost 4 X B-17E (17 damaged) and 41 X B-24D (67 damaged). The Nachi was struck by a bomb as she sat in the harbor. All other ordinance failed to strike the intended target.

S-28 was reported hit by a plane near Tassaforanga, communications have been lost.

Wetar Island was occupied by the Japanese.

Nigel has managed to discover that his prisoner is the top ace for the Japanese in the area with 17 kills, including his most recent victims before he went down. He has also discovered that the Japanese are reinforcing the island with thousands of troops and he must get this news out. He takes the radio and leaves one of the natives to watch the tightly bound Matsuyama. They finally find a spot where there are no Japanese patrols and get a message off. Now Nigel wonders if the message was received. Because of the Japanese being everywhere transmissions must be brief and they move out quickly. The message sent also requested that the prisoner be taken off the island, if possible.

O'Bannon has been ordered into port to replenish her stores and fuel. Bill plans on taking an opportunity to see that the crew's mail be sent and hopefully they can get some.

With so many ships around and some of the officers rotating Stateside rumors abound about new career opportunities and Phil silently hopes that a command is in the offing for him.

Red and Cookie get a cable from their lawyer in Honolulu that all seems to be in order and that tomorrow or Monday at the latest the 2 will own more land. “The problem now is making the loan payments to the bank,” says Cookie. “The more we own the more we owe, but I have an idea How about we offer to sell a small piece of the action to some of our shipmates? We stay firmly in control, but their money will grease the skids.” Red thinks about it and likes the idea. They decide to approach the officers first, but how much will buy what is the problem to be worked out.

Gil continues to do well in radio school. He ranks close to the top in all of his classes. At the moment his focus is on tomorrow night and a hoped for outing to the USO Club.

Hamburg has been ordered evacuated.

The Grunion spotted an AP escorted by about 5 MSWs and though she tried an effective attack never came to fruition.

The Halibut spotted a BB, CA and a few DDs and tried to attack them but failed.

The SS Drum maneuvered into a position to attack a heavily escorted TK and managed to put a torpedo into her, setting the ship on fire. The sub then silently retired while the DDs tried to find her.

SS Finback was attacked by an ASW TF, but managed to escape without sustaining any damage. Later in the day the Japanese reacquired contact and made another futile attack.

Mandalay was attacked by 63 X B-25J, 47 X B-24D and 47 X P-38G. A Japanese CAP of 16 X Zero, 20 X Jack and 13 X Tony greeted them. The fighters swirled and weaved their way through the air and 14 X Zero were downed, 25 Jack were destroyed as were 18 X Tony at the cost of 2 X B-25J shot down (4 damaged), 2 X B-24 D destroyed (3 damaged and 11 Lightnings downed (4 damaged). The base was heavily damaged and many secondary explosions were observed. Ground losses were estimated to have been heavy.

Jaluit's port was raided by 43 X B-25J and 47 X P-38G who managed light damage to their target and a few casualties to the troops based there in exchange for losing 2 bombers and having 16 others damaged by flak.

18 Chinese B-25Js, escorted by 8 Warhawks, attacked Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the same old spot and inflicted light casualties and then departed safely.

11 X Helen attacked the 6th Chinese Air Base Force and at no cost to the attackers the Chinese unit took light losses.

Admiral Nimitz reads the reports and wonders what's wrong with these sub commanders that can't give their positions when reporting in.

The O'Bannon idles at anchor while the Benham does the same. Phil manages to get word to Bill and they are getting together for dinner this evening. While they have their meal in the Officer's Club they discuss the possibilities of promotion and commands. Bill tells him that he's fortunate that he has Frank as an exec and that O'Bannon's crew is top notch. Phil says that Benham is good too, but always drawing convoy escort duty and never getting a chance to distinguish herself. The conversation drifts to other topics as it gets late and they head back to their ships.

Gil is at the USO Club and is vainly searching for Elaine. It seems, according to a girl who knows her that she's got a cold and won't be there tonight. Gil is disappointed, but has a good time anyhow.

Red and Cookie have decided on a plan and they approach their skipper about investing. Captain Demesa talks with them for about an hour and then asks if he could let them know tomorrow after thinking about it.

A night air attack on Akyab was made by 15 X Nick and in return for very minor damage to the base and a burning F-5A all of the planes were nicked by the AA. Sorry I couldn't help that.

The SS Steelhead attacked an AK 137 miles SW of Truk and hit her with a fish, doing heavy damage and causing fires.

Maloelap was bombed by 42 X B-24D, 4 of which were damaged. A Dinah was destroyed on the ground and the base sustained light damage, though there were reports of secondary explosions. Ground troops were estimated to have taken light losses.

Jaluit was attacked by 9 X B-25J and 39 X P-38G. 5 of the Mitchells were damaged and the base had negligible damage.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was administered it's daily dose of bombs by 24 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N. Japanese losses were light and all of the planes left their milk run safely.

The IJA 13th Division, in the area of the road junction, was hit by 11 X B-25J and 15 X P-40N who administered very light casualties to the Japanese and then left safely. The IJA 8th Engineer Regiment, which was about 11 miles away was attacked by 24 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N. Japanese casualties were light and all planes returned to base safely.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force, approximately 45 miles NE of Sining, was attacked by 11 X Helen and the unit had light casualties. No planes were damaged in the attack.

The USN's muscle is back at sea after replenishing at Luganville. The quest is bringing the KB to battle. O'Bannon is part of the screen for 2 CVs, a CVL, 2 CAs, a CLAA and a CL. All told there are 13 ships in this TF and the sky is constantly patrolled by SBDs searching and fighters, both Hellcats and Wildcats being vigilant. Bill sits in the wardroom having a mug of coffee and a sandwich. Later he intends on writing a letter to Sandy. For now he wonders if the future lies on the O'Bannon, another ship or maybe some leave. He's so tired and suddenly the klaxon sounds and he's off and running to the bridge. Another sonar contact, real or false is unknown so they continue to search before finally giving up and rejoining the formation.

Benham has once again drawn the duty of screening a replenishment TF. Phil inwardly sighs and tells himself that at least they're good at what they do. Without this replenishment TF the CVs would quickly run out of fuel and planes. Just out of sight another TF steams, the CVEs that are escorting the replenishment TF.

Dave wonders when he'll be able to latch onto some more tires as when people heard that he had some for sale they flocked to the garage. Needless to say that he had to disappoint everyone as the ones he had were promised and went in a flash. He now has a waiting list and he sends in a new order to the tire supplier. Sandy takes the waiting list a files it away telling Dave that he'd just lose it and then all hell would break loose.

Pete has declared that his son will have his own room. Sylvia looks at him and says, “What if the baby is a girl?”

He smiles and replies, “Any child of ours will have their own room. Better?”

Isn't it good to have Hellcats flying from your CV's! Have you been able to put any Corsair squadrons on British carriers?

Hellcats are better than good, not enough of them to go around so prudence dictates upgrading Wildcat squadrons slowly as an eye to make good on losses is needed too.

RN Corsairs are a beautiful thing, though the RN hasn't been able to conduct the smallest op without failure to date.

Combat

SS KXVII, 23 miles SE of Rabaul, tried to attack a TK and 2 X AO, but failed. The escorts kept searching and finally located the sub and pounded away causing horrific damage. The sub is limping along in a doubtful battle to save the boat. A position and report has been sent and acknowledged so maybe another boat will come to their aid. The S-18 has been dispatched to intercept the stricken Dutch sub and despite the heavy Japanese air patrols a rescue will be attempted.

Akyab was raided by 9 X Nick at night and no damage was done while it was claimed by the AA gunners that 8 of the marauders were hit.

The SS Grunion, 31 miles W of Tulagi attacked and hit an AP with a fish causing fires. The escorting DDs located and pounced on the sub which forced her to make for Luganville with moderate damage to her systems and moderate flooding. The exec joked to a nervous planesman that he shouldn't worry as they always have sunk the sub before, but only when they wanted and now wasn't wanted the young man thinks to himself.

Near Darwin the SS Tuna tried to get in an attack on a ML, but failed to attain a firing position that was favorable. Later, that afternoon she spotted and attacked an AP, hitting it with a fish that set it ablaze. The escorts then subjected her to a merciless pounding with depth charges. After the escorts lost contact the sub maneuvered into attack position and again torpedoed the hapless AP. This time the escorts had no counter up their sleeves.

The SS S-38 spotted a pair of APs 25 miles SW of Munda Point, managing to successfully torpedo one of them, setting it ablaze.

Maloelap was bombed by 30 X B-24D, 1 of which was damaged by ground fire. The bombing destroyed 2 X Dinah and caused moderate damage to the airbase. There were many secondary explosions, which indicated that a supply dump was hit hard.

Jaluit was raided by 8 X B-25J and 37 X P-38G and even though there was no opposition in the air the bombers couldn't locate their target. While they milled about looking for a break in the cloud cover flak downed 1 of them and damaged 6 others. A gunner wondered why they couldn't find a stationary target, yet the Japs could hammer away at them.

Port Moresby was bombed by 42 X B-17E and 64 X B-24D, of which 2 of the former were damaged and a B-24D was destroyed with another damaged by AA. The airbase was very heavily damaged with numerous secondary explosions seen. Ground losses were estimated to have been heavy also. Debriefers took note that there was no air cover flown by the Japanese and no planes were seen at the airfield.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was again hit by the Chinese Air Force. 18 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N caused light losses and all planes, as usual, left untouched.

The IJA 6th Division, 14 miles from the road junction was bombed by 20 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N. Casualties were thought to have been light and no planes were damaged. At almost the same time 8 miles away the 11th Ind. Brigade was hit by 13 X B-25J and 2 Warhawks. Casualties were reported as light and no planes were hit.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force, 37 miles NE of Sining, was attacked by 11 X Helen and light casualties were reported as the unit continues it's retreat towards friendly territory. No Japanese planes were hit by ground fire.

Operation King is still in it's opening phase, trying to lure the KB into a fight and whittle down the LBA in the Solomon Island area. To do this the USN has committed the following warships:

7 X CV
5 X CVL
8 X CVE
10 X BB
15 X CA
20 X CL
6 X CLAA
95 X DD

Numerous other types of ships to carry out the less glamorous duties are also available. LCUs abound and no less than 15 combat formations are awaiting the order to go. Of course there are also many support units also included in the operation.

Stick's morale is gradually on ebb as the duty is as boring as life on the tiny atoll known as Wake Island. Everybody wonders why such a large influx of troops and supplies has started here.

Ed consults with his staff and after all is said and done he knows that everything boils down to the least glamorous ship and job the USN has, clearing the minefields. He's reluctant to run his Old Gals in for a bombardment run until the sweeping is done, but he wonders if that will ever be accomplished.

Still stuck with the downed Japanese pilot Nigel is asking that a sub take him off his hands. One more mouth to feed is enough of a problem, but today a Japanese patrol was nearby and Matsuyama was asking for a smoke. “You're a crafty bugger, but we both know that the smoke could be smelled from a distance. You'd smell too and we can't be having that, now can we?” Nigel shakes his head and the natives rotate their watch on their prisoner. What the bloody hell am I supposed to do with a prisoner, wonders Nigel. He doesn't want to execute the man and he doesn't want to get caught. A reply comes as soon as they set the radio up in a new location. “Sit tight.” Blimey, he thinks, do they really want me dead?

The USAAF lost 54 of 178 B-24s attacking the Ploiesti oil field.

Combat

An attack on Yokosuka 2nd SNLF by 26 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N resulted in another dose of light casualties and no planes damaged. This milk run has become like a training flight for the Chinese pilots and their squadron COs remind them to stay alert because the Japanese are bound to try and spring a trap one of these days.

A raid on the IJA 6th Division, about 9 miles from the road junction caused heavy losses and the 26 X B-25J and their escort of 11 X P-40N all departed safely. Not far away the IJA 12th Ind. Brigade was visited by 9 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N who dished out light casualties to the unit at no cost to themselves.

An attack on 6th Chinese Air Base Force, 25 miles NE of Sining, resulted in the 15 X Helen inflicting very light casualties and all of the planes left unmolested.

Gili Gili's CAP of 34 X Tojo and 29 X Tony was tested by 59 X B-17E and 15 X B-24D. The Japanese planes made slashing passes through the bomber boxes and in doing so lost a Tojo while 13 Tojos and 11 Tonys were damaged. 11 X B-17E went down (17 damaged) and 12 B-24D were destroyed in the fight. The few planes that arrived over the target failed to drop their bombs on anything of value.

A Betty attacked the Grunion 22 miles NE of Tulagi, doing no damage.

A Betty attacked the KXVII 19 miles off of Gasmata, doing no damage. The sub has lost her fight to survive and her skipper orders the crew to abandon her. A few men remained behind with their captain to scuttle the boat. The men then all make for the shore of New Britain and it's hostile environment. They silently pray for rescue as they paddle their rafts. The submarine S-18, unknown to the Dutch submariners, is only 19 miles away. She is submerged because of the heavy air patrols in the area and will surface at dusk in an effort to make a rescue.

An Emily attacked the S-45 near Fergusson Island, doing no damage.

Operational orders have been issued to the line units for Operation Hedge Cutter and the jump off is at dawn on the 11th. In the meantime the troops go about the mundane jobs of checking and rechecking their gear and the officers call for more of this and that.

Back in classes again as another week of training commences and the men are being tasked with sending and receiving messages in Morse. After the instructor reads some of the message content he wonders if this is the same message that they all were to use. “If this sighting report was real then half of you sent wrong information, incomplete information or lost things incoming. In the real world mistakes cost lives so I suggest we settle down and try again with message number 2.” He never said who screwed up and Gil wonders if he was one of them. It'll be a long week if they don't start doing things properly.

The CVTFs are on patrol looking for trouble and the screens have nothing to report. O'Bannon will go to a position in the van of this vast armada in the predawn hours as her TF is in the lead and the DDs tend to rotate positions as one of their number prosecutes a sonar contact. Bill leaves Frank with the bridge and wearily retires to his cabin. It is expected that tomorrow could be a busy day so he needs to get some rest. He lies in his bunk with a million things running through his head and sleep just won't come. Finally he thinks of the last time he and Sandy went for a hike in the mountains and he nods off.

The replenishment TF is scheduled to meet with the CVTFs so that the DDs can refuel before the expected action starts. Benham silently knifes her way through the swells as sharp eyes scan for anything that shouldn't be there and Phil drinks a mug of piping hot coffee that was just given to him. Radar and sonar have nothing, but within a few hours lots of ships should be picked up on the screen as the thirsty combat formations appear.

Hamburg was bombed for the 9th time in 8 days and it is reported that 50,000 civilians are dead.

Hitler ordered “stand fast” in Russia and Von Manstein ignored the order as he uses a flexible defense.

Combat

The DDs Fanning and Lang, about 73 miles E of Rennell Island, detected and attacked a Japanese sub. They claimed multiple hits. Then the DDs Monssen and Grayson joined in the hunt and they claimed many hits on what they thought was the same sub. The Fanning and Lang were then joined by the DD Helm and the 3 of them continued the attack on the sub, claiming still more hits. Later a confirmed kill was given.

Gili Gili, which had a CAP of 32 X Tojo and 28 X Tony, was raided by 46 X B-17E, 63 X B-24D and 3 X F-5A. The bombers fought their way through the savage fighter attacks and dumped their bombs on the base doing moderate damage to the airfield, inflicting light losses on the troops there and destroying 6 X Tojo (17 damaged), 8 X Tony (13 damaged) and an Emily on the ground. This was at the cost of 5 X B-17E downed (16 damaged) and 26 X B-24D shot down (11 damaged).

The Chinese set 19 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N on the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, inflicting moderate casualties in return for no damaged aircraft.

Lunga's defenses were tested by the USN with a large air raid comprised of 143 X SBD, 134 X TBF, 51 X TBM, 126 X F4F-4 and 13 X F6F. The Japanese contested the attack with 57 X Zero, 8 X Zeke, 14 X Jack and 41 X Tony along with heavy flak over the targets themselves. A very bloody air battle ensued and the Americans managed to penetrate the defenses despite having heavy losses: 3 X SBD downed (21 damaged), 10 X TBF destroyed (19 damaged), a TBM shot down (3 damaged), 77 X F4F-4 destroyed and 2 X F6F downed. The Japanese losses were placed at 32 X Zero, 5 X Zeke, 11 X Jack, 38 X Tony, 4 X Betty and a Dinah. The port was heavily damaged and 2 X CA, thought to be Nachi and Takao were each hit with 2 bombs while the airfield sustained moderate damage. Ground losses were thought to have been heavy and many secondary explosions were reported.

LCDR C. Fenton of VF-5 bailed out and was rescued by a DD. He'll be back aboard the Yorktown soon he's told and when questioned about the huge fracas in the skies over Guadalcanal he tells them of his first kill, a Tony. He's soaked, in high spirits and luckily unharmed. His Wildcat's engine seized up after he was attacked by 3 fighters who riddled his plane. If he hadn't lost the oil he would've made back to the ship, he tells the sailors. “The Wildcat is one tough bird who can take lots of punishment,” he tells them.

Still the KB is not engaging the American fleet. The HQs of SOPAC have pieced together the puzzle of Lunga based on reports generated today and it is believed that there are now 19 LCUs based there comprising 96120/895/7. The airfield and port have been heavily damaged in today's raids, but the fleet will retire so the air groups can make good their losses before the expected battle with the KB.

Misses Betty, Dinah and Emily are keeping a close watch on the USN fleet in the Solomons.

O'Bannon's radar and lookouts have been busy watching planes watching them. The fact that it's just snoopers does nothing to calm one's nerves as the skies could fill with Japanese planes at any moment. Bill, careful to keep a calm exterior, tells Frank that he's going below for a catnap.

Phil stands by the sonar operator watching the screen in front of the man. Finally he departs, to the relief of the sailor. So much time on edge with little to do is beginning to tell on everybody. Where is the IJN?

The S-18, while picking up survivors of the Dutch sub KXVII, was attacked by a Kate. The sub's gunners managed to drive off the plane which didn't press home an attack. Sure that his position has been reported back to Rabaul the S-18's skipper decides that they will submerge and depart at daylight tomorrow, but for now the rescue will continue.

FDR reads the communications and wonders what more Stalin wants from him. “Send a reply that we doubt that we can do what he wants before winter sets in, if at all.” FDR knows that this will irk Stalin, especially the last part, but 2 can play this game.

The Italians started to evacuate their forces from Sicily.

Combat

The SS Kingfish tried to attack an unescorted AP 17 miles SE of Munda Point, but failed in her attempt.

A Japanese sub tried to attack a surface combat TF 84 miles SE of Rennell Island and all she got for her efforts was a pounding by the DDs who claimed multiple hits. A little while later debris and an oil slick resulted in a confirmed kill.

A Japanese TF encountered a mine field at Amboina.

An ASW attack near Dutch Harbor resulted in the DDs claiming many hits.

An air attack on Lunga by 48 X B-17E and 191 X B-24D was met by 6 X Irving. The bombers ploughed through the Japanese planes like a hot knife through butter and then encountered flak. 2 X B-17E and 13 X B-24D were damaged and the bombs rained down on the airfield and port resulting in 6 X Irving, 7 X Betty, 2 X Dinah and a Zero being destroyed in the air and on the ground. The airbase was devastated, the port was moderately damaged and secondary explosions galore were seen.

The IJA 11th Ind. Brigade, not far from the road junction, was hammered by 34 X B-25J and 15 X P-40N for moderate casualties. The Chinese are getting good at the business of war in the air.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force, NE of Sining, was hit by 15 X Helen and both sides had no losses.

The SS S-45, 87 miles S of Rabaul, was attacked by DDs and she sustained some rattled nerves and a damaged valve that is dripping.

The S-18 is making her way to Cairns with 33 men of the KXVII, 3 having died in the attack on the Dutch sub. It's horribly cramped on the old S boat, but nobody cares as the Americans are proud to have helped the Dutch who are happy to have been rescued. CDR Millican, S-18's skipper, remarked that he hoped the food lasted long enough to get them back to Cairns.

Dave reads the paper over breakfast and it features a story about LT RL Little, a pilot who has racked up 21 kills in his Lightning. He ranks second to a pilot who was killed in action that had 22 kills. “Well I guess that means the odd are in Little's favor that he'll become the top ace, if he stays alive,” says Dave to Sandy as they eat lunch. She doesn't reply, just thinks of Bill and when she'll get to see him again.

The Enterprise is docked at Luganville and F6F Hellcats are now aboard, replacing the Wildcats. As more of these planes make it to the front line units bigger and better things are expected when the combatants engage one another.

Stick maintains his position as number 4 in the finger four formation that is flying CAP for Wake Island this morning. He's tired as they took of just prior to dawn and he was up late engaged in a poker game. He hopes that today's patrol turns out better than the game as he's flat broke, not that there's anything to do with money on Wake anyway.

Combat

The SS Tuna, 22 miles from Darwin, spotted 3 heavily escorted APs and successfully torpedoed 1 of them. Troops were seen jumping into the water from the burning ship.

SS S-45, 16 miles from Rabaul, spotted a pair of APs and lit 1 up with the fish that hit it. A short time later the sub managed to torpedo the damaged AP again, sinking it, as the convoy had left her behind.

Kunming was swept by 24 X Tojo and 10 X P-40N engaged them. Each side lost a plane in the battle.

Myitkyina was attacked by 87 X Liberator VI, 48 X B-24D and 64 X B-25J and 2 of the former were damaged by ground fire as they dumped their bombs. The airbase sustained devastating damage and ground troops lost heavily.

Lunga's CAP of 17 X Zero attacked an incoming raid made up of 68 X B-24D and 5 X PBM. 7 of the fighters went down and 2 others were shot up while 7 of the bombers were destroyed (26 damaged) and 4 of the PBMs were damaged. The airfield was lightly damaged in the attack.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was given it's daily dose of bombs by 23 X B-25J and 11 X P-40N who inflicted moderate casualties on their favorite target.

The IJA 6th Division, not far from the road junction, was hit by 28 X B-25J and 14 X P-40N. The unit was thought to have taken light losses. At the same time the 12th Ind. Brigade, not to far away was struck by 13 X B-25J and 15 X P-40N. Losses among the troops were light. All the planes departed safely.

Stick is bored with the CAPs that he flies as the only thing the Japanese send to Wake are ill wishes. One of the pilots described duty at Wake as so boring that even being bored would be exciting. Another said that the food stinks and the water is stale. With so many positives they look at all of the men and material coming in and just shake their heads.

Gil lies in his bunk thinking about this weekend and going to the USO Club. He wonders if he's going to run into Elaine again there.

Bill sits in his cabin reading the orders to report tomorrow to SOPAC HQs and wonders what this is all about. The only thing he's sure of is that this isn't to inform him that he's been granted leave.

Phil sits in Benham's wardroom reading the orders summoning him to SOPAC HQs tomorrow and he can't imagine what it's about. He conjures up all sorts of things, but nothing makes sense.

Luganville is bursting at the seems and Gunny remarks to Slim that he's never even imagined such a huge amount of military might gathering in one place. Slim says, “Yeah our sorry behinds are gathered here and the heavy stuff will follow us.”

Combat

The SS Tuna tracked 2 heavily escorted APs through the morning and managed to get a shot in and hit 1 with a torpedo, causing heavy damage and setting it afire. Troops were observed going into the water.

The S-45 was attacked by PCs and MSWs. No damage was done to the sub. The Japanese vessels tried and finally found the sub again in the afternoon and they attacked, failing to do any damage.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was visited again by 26 X Mitchells and 11 X Warhawks and they all departed after having inflicted light losses on the Japanese unit.

The IJA 6th Division, in the area of the road junction was bombed by 13 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N who managed to dish out light casualties on the Japanese. The IJA 12th Ind. Brigade was next up a short distance away and 16 X B-25J and 2 X P-40N hit it for light losses.

Bill reports to SOPAC HQs as ordered and finds that Phil is sitting there waiting. The 2 of them chat and Phil is called into an office so Bill just stares at the wall waiting to be called. A short time later Phil returns, beaming. “I got a command,” he says. “You're being relieved and O'Bannon is mine as of now. Don't worry I promise to take good care of her and her crew for you. It's your turn to go in. I'll wait here for you.” Bill congratulates his friend and not knowing what's going on heads into the office. A short while later he returns.

“This is a crazy day for sure and we need to go out tonight to celebrate our promotions, you to LTCDR and me to Captain. I just got the CL Helena. She's a new Cleveland Class and she's mine as of now. Come on and I'll go to Benham with you to get your stuff and then we'll go to O'Bannon, where I'll help you get settled. Then I'll get my stuff out of your cabin, Captain, and head over to the Helena to get settled. We'll meet tonight for dinner at 2000 hours at that place where we had lunch recently. That good for you?” Phil nods and they head off in a jeep assigned to them. “Driver, if you would be so kind as to take this gentleman to his ship, the O'Bannon.”

Later at dinner Phil says, “I guess this means that there'll be no leave in the offing for either one of us. Now tell me all about how good Frank is again.”

Later that night Bill is marveling at the space his quarters afford him. After a destroyer this is like living in the Ritz. He's already issued orders that tomorrow, over breakfast in the wardroom, he'll be meeting with his officers.

A partial evacuation of Berlin was ordered to prevent another Hamburg.

Combat

The S-45, 18 miles SE of Rabaul, tried and failed to attack 5 X DD. Later the sub was attacked by DDs and PCs.

SS Tunny, 157 miles SE of Truk found herself in perfect position to intercept a pair of APs escorted by 4 X MSW. She promptly torpedoed 1 of the APs and noted that it was carrying troops and was burning.

17 X Corsair IV swept Rangoon and were challenged by 3 X Rufe, 10 X Zero, 12 X Tojo and 11 X Tony. In the ensuing melee a Rufe was downed, 4 X Zero were knocked out of the sky, 4 X Tojo went down and 4 X Tony were destroyed and nary a 1 of the Corsairs was scratched. HQs wonders if the Corsairs are so superior or the Japanese pilot quality is slipping. It doesn't matter as long as results like this are achieved they are happy tonight.

The SS Tuna, 35 miles from Darwin, attacked an AP which was without escort and hit her with 2 fish. The hapless AP, which was carrying troops, was burning before she slipped under the waters filled with screaming men.

The Grunion refueled, had some hasty repairs made and now she will make for Pearl.

Well that went well, thinks Bill as he had his first gathering of his officers. He told them that his door is always opened to them concerning any problems that they might have and that he considers it his duty to see that they become adept at other functions other than what they're currently assigned to. He stresses that the junior officers are expected to advance their knowledge as naval officers and that he expects the Helena to be one of the finest ships in the USN. He knows that there's lots of work to be done as most of the crew are green, including many officers, as the ship is new and that he'll need to rely on the veterans from other ships to carry more than their weight for now.

Phil has toured the O'Bannon with Frank and confides in him that he expects to be losing a fine exec sooner than he'd like. “Bill thinks very highly of you and has told me that anything other than excellent ratings for you will result in my being keelhauled.” The 2 share the laugh and overall Phil is impressed with what he sees and hears.

Ed is preparing his Old Gals to make another sally from port. The biggest problem with these old BBs is that they consume so much fuel.

The troops of Operation Hedge Cutter are in place and chomping at the bit, especially the Australian formations for obvious reasons. The officers at HQs are still trying to determine if the Japanese are bringing in more troops or pulling some out of Australia. There has been lots of activity reported by the Allied subs.

The SS Amberjack, about 43 miles off of Tokyo, attacked a lone AP and hit her with 2 rounds from the deck gun and 2 fish. The AP was carrying troops at the time of the attack.

Rangoon was swept by 19 X Corsair IV and a reception committee of 3 X Rufe, 5 X Zero, 28 X Jack, 8 X Tojo and 9 X Tony were on hand to greet them. The Japanese on the ground watched as 2 X Rufe, 3 X Jack, 2 X Tojo (1 damaged) and 2 X Tony were shot down while the British lost 3 X Corsair.

Mandalay was swept by 63 X P-38G and the Japanese clashed with them using 30 X Zero, 21 X Jack and 20 X Tony. The Japanese lost 9 X Zero, 10 X Jack (another damaged) and 13 X Tony. There were 24 X P-38G downed and 5 more damaged.

Jaluit was raided by 42 X B-25J (8 damaged by flak)and 40 X P-38G, but the bombs fell harmlessly off target.

The IJA 13th Division, near the road junction, was struck by 33 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N which inflicted moderate casualties on the unit. All of the planes departed safely.

The newspapers in Brisbane continue to call for the liberation of Australia from the Japanese. Pete sets it down and mutters, “You'd think that with all of the troops that've moved through Brisbane of late that something is afoot.” Sylvia looks at him and nods before returning to working on the ledger.

Gil is steadily improving and continues to learn the ins and outs of the radios themselves. He keeps thinking that gunnery school will be a snap compared to this.

A man stops by the garage and spends some time talking to Dave. When he leaves Sandy asks her father what that was all about and he replies, “He told me that skilled mechanics, such as yours truly, are in high demand. He said that I should go to San Francisco and I could land a job making all the money we could ever need. I wonder...”

Today Portugal invoked a 1373 alliance with Great Britain and will now allow the Allies to use the Azores for bases.

Combat

Jaluit underwent a raid by 43 X B-25J and 45 X P-38G, who inflicted light casualties on the troops at a cost of 7 damaged bombers.

Tulagi was attacked by 47 X B-17E, 185 X B-24D and 8 X PBM. The Japanese had 4 X Zeke and 14 X Tony on station and they intercepted. 3 X Zeke were shot down and a Tony went down (12 damaged) while the Americans lost 6 X B-24D (22 damaged) and 7 Flying Forts were shot up. 2 CAs in the harbor, thought to be the Takao and Nachi were hit a number of times and were heavily damaged and burning. The port itself sustained moderate damage, many secondary explosions were seen and ground troops were thought to have had light casualties.

The Chinese milk run visited the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF with 22 X B-25J and 13 X P-40N who inflicted light casualties on the unit before departing unharmed.

The IJA 13th Division, still near the road junction, was raided by 15 X B-25J and 13 X P-40N. The unit took light losses. At the same time, nearby, the 12th Ind. Brigade was struck by 21 X B-25J and 11 X P-40N. There were light casualties as a result and all planes departed safely.

Ed wraps up a meeting of his skippers and 3 of his BBs will sail tomorrow with a replenishment TF as cover for it. Of course if any opportunities arise that need some big guns he'll be ready, willing and able.

O'Bannon gets ready to depart Luganville as part of a CVTF screen. This will be her 1st sortie with her new Captain, Phil.

Yesterday morning Gil went to the USO Club and ran into Elaine. They had an argument over who should get the comic section of the Sunday newspaper. Gil relented and thought to himself that she's a good looking girl, but more that difficult to deal with. Still there is something about her that attracts him.

Dave and Sandy are weighing the pros and cons of a move to San Francisco and she finally says, “I don't want to leave these mountains. I will visit with you, especially if a certain sailor is in port.”

Dave considers this and says, “I feel the same way, but with rationing and all we're barely able to survive. I just don't know what to do.”

Two more days and Operation Hedge Cutter jumps off. There's been nothing to indicate a forward Japanese positioning and hopefully nothing has leaked about the Allied plans. Everything is in place and the troops are raring to go.

The SS Wahoo tried to get an attack in on a pair of ARs, but couldn't penetrate the screening vessels.

Jaluit was raided by 35 X PB4Y and 44 X P-38G and they dished out moderate damage to the port at the cost of 5 bombers being damaged by flak.

The IJA 12th Ind. Brigade, in the region of the road junction was attacked by 41 X B-25J and 26 X P-40N. The unit sustained moderate casualties and all of the planes retired safely.

Bill's CL sails as part of Ed's BB force that's tagging along with the replenishment group. Depending how the carriers do it's possible that they could attack Tulagi as a test. Bill thinks back to the bombardment TF that Ed commanded and shelling Wake Island at the cost of 3 DDs hitting mines, one of which was the O'Bannon. He wonders if Ed still worries about mines because of that day.

Phil on board the bridge of the O'Bannon is sailing as part of the screen for the CVTF that includes the Wasp and 2 CVLs. This TF is part of the massive CV force that is out hunting the KB. He hopes that they manage to locate and bring the IJN to battle. He still remembers Benham's early war days and the loss of the original Big E.

Pete and Sylvia enjoy a morning stroll through Brisbane and talk of their hopes and fears for their unborn child. “The Japanese will be gone from Australia before the baby is born,” says Pete.

Sylvia looks at him and says,”How can you be so sure?”

Tomorrow at dawn Operation Hedge Cutter commences at dawn. All is ready and the commanders are worried about the lack of air cover and recon available to them. They remember the failures of Operation Grinder. The force is much stronger this time around and AA units are in position to hurt the Japanese planes, should they appear.

The submarine Runner, 19 miles SW of Buka, was attacked by DDs and PCs, but managed to evade her attackers before they could damage her.

The Chinese, using 22 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N, attacked the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, which for some reason continues to stay in the same position blocking the river crossing. The unit had light losses and all of the planes headed safely back to base.

The IJA 6th Division, in the road junction area was hit by 37 X B-25J and 25 X P-40N. The bombers inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese and no planes were damaged.

The last of the SWPAC troops are reaching their jump off positions as Operation Hedge Cutter is now in motion. The taking of Thursday Island will be attempted by fast transport. If that works then a squadron of P-47Cs will be stationed there to harass Port Moresby in concert with bomber raids and they will help protect ships making the transit of the narrows there in the future.

19 X Corsair IV swept Rangoon only to find nobody home. The cloud cover was heavy and it's entirely possible that the Corsairs and CAP flew right by one another without ever knowing it.

The IJA 13th Division, in the road junction area was struck by 36 X B-25J and 24 X P-40N. Casualties were moderate for the Japanese and all of the planes left safely. The Chinese are becoming better and better while they are also emboldened by their recent successes, but for how long can the Japanese allow these raids to continue uncontested as their losses mount.

Tonight the USN CVTFs will move into range of Guadalcanal and the Hellcats will conduct a sweep while the rest of the planes are targeting the airstrip. If all goes well the next day Tulagi's port will be hit.

Stick still hasn't flown anything other than dull and boring CAPs. He has nothing to show for his time logged in the air other than his plane is unavailable for the flight line as it's undergoing a scheduled maintenance.

Ed stands on the bridge of the BB Mississippi awaiting the outcome of the carrier raids of the next couple of days. What transpires will directly cause him to move in on Tulagi and shell it or to just lumber along shadowing the replenishment force. He wonders why things are plodding along at such a slow pace. He keeps pressing for a faster tempo, but to no avail.

The big bombers stationed at Lunga are as ready to go as ever, but they too await the outcome of tomorrow's planned aerial action over Guadalcanal. The crews are praying that the Navy clobbers the Japanese fighters that have been killing the bomber raids.

The first of the ships involved in Operation Left hook sailed from Pearl Harbor today. They will be joined by another TF which sails on the 15th. It is hoped that this operation throws the Japanese a curve that upsets their defensive plans. Surely the Kuriles will draw a response. Stalin will be watching this closely as he has told his generals to prepare for the possibility of a spring attack on the Japanese.

Last night Gil ran into Elaine again at the USO Club. She's nice enough to invite him on a picnic, but he has to ask for a rain check as classes are being accelerated for some reason.

The RAF bombed Milan.

On the Eastern Front the Germans are in retreat. Hitler orders a fortified line built (Panther Line) on the Dnieper River.

Combat

Mandalay was attacked by 78 X Liberator VI, 43 X B-24D and an escort of 96 X P-38G against which the Japanese threw a CAP consisting of 37 X Zero, 4 X Zeke, 64 X Jack and 17 X Tony. Absolute mayhem resulted in the Japanese suffering the loss of 16 X Zero (5 damaged), 2 X Zeke, 40 X Jack and 12 X Tony. The Allies had 7 X Liberator VI damaged, a B-24D downed (6 damaged) and 36 X P-38G destroyed (15 damaged). The escorts did well protecting the bombers as the base took very heavy damage and the ground troops had heavy casualties. Later in the day Mandalay was swept by 18 X Corsair IV and 19 X Zero, a Zeke, 12 X Jack and 3 X Tony engaged them. 10 X Zero were shot down, 5 X Jack destroyed (2 damaged) and a Tony went down (another damaged) while the British lost 3 X Corsairs and another was damaged.

Lunga was swept by 72 X F6F and the CAP of 16 X Zero, 30 X Zeke, 30 X Jack and 16 X Tony tangled with them. 14 Hellcats were destroyed and another 9 damaged as they downed 8 X Zero, 16 X Zeke, 15 X Jack and 16 X Tony. Later Lunga's CAP of 8 X Zero, 14 X Zeke and 15 X Jack attacked an American raid made up of 198 X SBD, 54 X TBF and 101 X F4F-4. In the ensuing melee 8 X Zero went down, 5 X Zeke were destroyed (another damaged) and 14 X Jack were shot down. American losses were an SBD destroyed (1 damaged), a TBF damaged and 23 X F4F-4 downed (2 damaged). The following ships were on the receiving end of the raid.

AK Yamahuzi Maru, Bomb hits 6, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AK Yamasimo Maru, Bomb hits 12, on fire, heavy damage
AK Tatsuura Maru, Bomb hits 4, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
MSW W.18, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AK Yosida Maru #1, Bomb hits 7, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Wa 101
AK Yamazuki Maru, Bomb hits 10, on fire, heavy damage
MSW W.19, Bomb hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
AK Yamabiko Maru, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
AK Yamazato Maru, Bomb hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
MSW W.6
MSW Wa 15, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was once again visited by 25 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N. The planes dumped their bombs and departed untouched after inflicting moderate losses on the unit.

The IJA 13th Division, located in the road junction area was attacked by 39 X B-25J and 23 X P-40N. Japanese losses were light and the Chinese departed safely.

Elements of the IJA 33rd Division, at Mytikyina, were attacked by 20 X B-25J, of which 1 was downed and 6 others sustained damage. Japanese troops took moderate losses. Minutes later another 15 X B-25J appeared and 2 were damaged by flak while they inflicted additional light losses on the unit.

The S-42 was attacked by IJN DDs, but slipped away unharmed. Later the Japanese reacquired the sub, but the attack was ineffectual.

The SS Tullibee torpedoed a TK, setting it ablaze.

Bill watches the returning planes landing on the deck of a nearby CV. This is something that he rarely got to observe when he was on the O'Bannon as she was a screening vessel on the outer perimeter of the TF and an older, less capable DD would be on standby in case a plane splashed during flight ops. With the sun setting there's little to do so he leaves the bridge and heads to the wardroom for some food.

Ed reads the reports and he and his staff give knowing looks as they sense that the time is ripe to attack their targets. All they need is to be turned loose by HQs.

Operation Hedge Cutter is proceeding as planned and there are those at HQs who are getting increasingly nervous for that very reason. There has been no contact with the Japanese as of yet, but it is still early.

Reports filtering back to SWPAC HQs paint the picture of a very bad day to be Japanese. The USN CVs have shown that they can steam where they want and inflict a devastating punch. Now the only question that remains is where is the KB?

The British have finally agreed to having a part in Operation Hedge Cutter and they will join as soon as the coast of Australia has been liberated.
