Hi to all,
my first post here.
I've read the Modding guide for DW and my question is, is it possible to make planet classes like gas giant or rocky planets habitable for a race ?
Is it so, with wich number I can do so in race.txt ? ( 0=Condinental.....5=Volcanic )

I want make a set of new races, like in MOO2/MOO3, Geodic and gas based races and that these races can build up colonies on planets who are deadly for all other human, insectoid ect. races.

Hello Jounk33, and welcome to the DW forum! At this time, the Barren Rock and
both Frozen and Gas Giant planets are not coded to be used as race homeworlds.

I do believe though that this request has been placed on the Master Wishlist
though.

Welcome to the forum, Jounk33, even if the request is on the wishlist more votes don't hurt

Thanks,
I'am wondering about the poor modding possibilities of DW. Even MOO3 had more modding support.

But Dw is still a Space Empire game I like.

It's been both requested and promised. The fact that Elliot is the one man dev team behind the game doesn't help speed things over
I know, I sound like a broken disc repeating this

Heho,
A other question about planets and races.
We can adjust the homeplanet, But where we can adjust what planets can be colonized by which race.
For example, if I want to make ice planets possible for human, how does that work?
But I think this is again hard coded.

You can change the native planet for each race by editing the races.txt file.

Have a look at the customization guide for details. - ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/DistantWorlds/DistantWorlds-Customization_Guide.zip

The races.txt file is also pretty self explanatory. It's located in the main DW directory, but you should copy it to a customisation folder before editing it.

You are right, Jounk33, this is hard coded atm. But it's a good idea, you should wishlist it.

I'm sorry, I didn't understand.

Do you want to make a list of planets that each race can colonise from the start? eg. So that Humans could immediately colonise ice planets as well as their native continental?

If so, then yes I agree. It would, however, make expansion alot faster and this is a bad thing for me. However more modablity is always better. I think if we had more planet types and a larger map size, then this sort of thing would be great.

It will also allow for a more varied gameplay, diversity is always welcomed.

I'm not sure about that, Data. If humans could also colonise ice worlds then, that would make them always at odds with the Naxxilian, since they would take potential colonies from them. So, surely that would decrease variety of gameplay?

That's why, if we could do this, we would need more planet types and a larger playing field, so as to avoid the same thing repeating each game when we encounter the Naxxilian.

Spot on. I was also thinking about giving the humans only ice worlds at game start and the Naxxilian only continental...or at least to give us the option to choose whatever setup we may find interesting.

Humans on iceplanets was only an example.
What I want do is overhaul all races so I personally like this races.

In DW and in all other space empire games, the original breeds are just not logical for a biological perspective.
In a macro cosmos, as in a galaxy, it has no biological systematic difference between human and marsupial creatures, because they are both mammals.

Biological differences in the classification are more fundamental.
I would therefore like to divide the races following masen families:
- Mollusca
- Artrophoda
- Ichthya
- Amphibia
- Sauropsida
- Mammalia

It removes all especially cuddly monster races and taken to new breeds that fit into this biological pattern.
Now and for that it's just too important to alter anything in these races, but unfortunately, the possibilities are pretty limited. So beautiful, as advertised in the description, you can not modding the game. It's more window dressing.

Data, has it any effect If modder express their wishes ?

Okay, one testresault.
I changed the Atuuk to a reptilan like race. Long wingded and highly intelligent.
I give them a desert planet for home. So I findout, that this race can colonized desert planets and continetal planets. The original Atuuk can colonize continetal and swamp planets.
But I ask myself, where I can adjust the new race can use an other planet class instead of a continetal planet.
Of course this is hard coded, but this things are quite elementary things if you want to create a new race, why we can not adjust what planet is and what planet is not tolerated by this new race. So I think actually the modding capabilities are not even exist in DW. Everything is, as I said, just window dressing.

Right you are Mr. Data, I'm not doing well at all here am I?

Jounk, you're absolutely right. I forgot that every race can colonise continental, which is pretty big flaw IMO. I think it's basically because continental colonisation is a level 0 tech, which every race starts with.

It's not really something that's been complained about enough either. We all sort of grumbled about it and nothing got done, and now it's pretty much forgotten. We need some one to kick up a storm about this to get it fixed.

Have you read any of the modder's masterlist thread? http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2526278

Yap, Jounk, Igard is correct about the modder's masterlist thread and Matrix confirmed that Elliot is working also based on our polls and wishlists. But the "kick up a storm about this to get it fixed" approach is also justified so if you add your vote for this as well we'll also get behind it.

Sweet! Those look great. Really hoping we can edit those race families soon.

Jounk33, your english is very good. It's not perfect, but it's more than good enough.

I second that. Would be nice to be able to define new family types and traits as well.

Did someone say Rebellion?

These races look great, Jounk33...
And again, if the people on this forum can understand my english, they can easily understand yours! Your english is fine!

I see some Star Wars looking races -- the three-eyed Gran in the mammals (), and then the Bossk (Trandoshian) - like Creature in the reptilian... Yippie!

Yes, I study the StarWars Universe some time ago and I see, Lucas and his autors understand biological systematic of lifeforms.

I'm afraid that in this case the SW universe does indeed offer more as opposed to the ST one. I still remember how funny the first klingons looked

I thought Star Trek IV had a lot of races in it...
But then George Lucas likes creatures...

I hate to say it, but I am kind of a human-liker. For the Bothans, I traded horse heads for human beings...
I do like the old Klingons, but I like the new ones too... The Old FASA corporation did something with that to explain it... I think they introduced Klingon-Human fusion Klingons (the original series), real Klingons (like the movies), and then Romulan-Klingon Fusions as well... That is going back some years though...

Not all Spezies of the StarWars Universe I like.
But Lucas and his Autors have made with their Spezies a science.
Every race is listed in a categorie, with background and historystory.
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Species
Even Tolkien has made such a science with his fantasy universe.

Star Trek, because of Rodenberry's Stories are mostly written for TV and the movie Technnologie was at this time (1970's) very limited, most or many of the Species are energie-based, od very human-like.
