Eventually, as the front contracts and you move west, rifle divisions become less and less useful. You really can get by with nothing but rifle corps once you close in on the prewar frontier. Mind you, it's extremely nice to have specialty units like mountain divisions in the Carpathians.

Furthermore, you can always break down a rifle corps to cover more frontage if absolutely necessary.

The German front proper is rather small by Soviet standards. Even Poland is just a couple dozen hexes from the Baltic to the Carpathians.

The other thing I found out with the mountain divisions is they have better mobility in the winter.

Very true; they are useful in later winters as "foot exploitation". They have more staying power than a Tank Corps, I have found.

They won't form pockets, but I mean to occupy a hex you just cleared via combat

To answer earlier question: I now have 76 Infantry Corps (49 Guards), and 256 Infantry Divisions (23 Guards; I was converting Guards Div first for the most part). Some of that infantry is tied-up in the Caucaussu, but figure 150 Corps is a very realistic target, with some divisions left over.

Also have 17 Cav Corps (all but 2 of which are Guards), and 30 Tank Corps (13 Guards)

I built 142 Sapper Regts (I like those), of which 42 are Guards. Also 75 Tank Regts; of those, 20 are guards (only 4 are non-Heavy)

Probably won't play this out though; I have proposed to Tarhunnas that we stop. At this point, it's going to look like fantasy compared to 1.05, and at any rate, the Wehrmacht has collapsed. AGS was just pushed out of Kirovograd, and Kiev is a realistic objective for the 42-43 winter offensive. Odessa is attainable. It's basically a runaway at this point, and I don't think Tarhunnas can do anything about it.

So do you think that the upcoming changes are sufficient to deal with the fact that so many games seem to end by '42?

Many games(1.04) end early because the players are not equaly matched, Russian or German.

All things being equal 1.05 should address many issues and hopefully most games now will end later then 43.

I hope so but I'd still like to hear what impact the supply requirement for fort building will have on the Germans in 1941 when digging in for the blizzard.

All is quiet from the devs on that question. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

As Tarhunnas reported on his AAR, this game is OVER. He played very well, and was a gracious opponent. He was making me sweat pretty hard there in 1941.

Hopefully, this game was helpful to powers that be on balance, as the Germans need help for sure. I think the first 30 turns or so should play fairly close to 1.05, but this game clearly diverged after April 1942, and degenerated into a Red Army slugfest.

Tarhunnas shared his password, so I am checking out the Germans now, and posting a couple items for the Devs/testers attention, to make sure we don't have a problem.

The main thing is that the Germans are 100% out of Armaments, and have almost 400,000 in the Manpower pool. Romania is in the same boat. Hungary and Slovakia seem to be fine on Armaments. But the Wehrmacht should'nt have that many guys in depot.

That's a problem; Tarhunnas finished with 2.6 mil guys, which is bad, but the Wehrmacht looks alot better at 3 mil!

Q-ball, that arms problem the Germans are having might have something to do with a large red army bashing their heads in early 1942 (war industry in low gear) while historically the war industry only started to really pickup in 1943, 1944...

1.05 might fix part of that problem...

Here are the German production figures. That's alot of guys in the Manpower pool.

Granted, Tarhunnas took a fair beating in Winter and in 1942; that would be less in 1.05. I just want to post this to make sure we don't have a problem

Romania has 77K in the Manpower Pool, with Zero Arm

The other Axis countries seem OK
