After years of ridiculing the feckless UN, I'm very pleased to see that they have paid off for me now! Also, thanks to our lime-enhanced gentry for ponying up the big bucks.

A question or two:

What's the difference between a secret number and a PIN?
With this plethora of numbers and activation codes, this has gotta be legit, right?
This certificate of merit will go along nicely with my 'Matrix Legion of Merit' ranking-both begat of SPAMing.
Why does Mr. Peters have a Japan suffix on his 'official' Yahoo email account?

Curiously, that figure is suspiciously the same as the inheritance from my previously unknown cousin that I am waiting for the International Bank of Big Bucks to finish processing and release.

Thanks!

Uff... OK... let's stick with the big boys (i.e. "Division I") then...

Why are there different conferences in that "Div I"?

Do they play each other in their own conference (or they play teams from other conferences as well)?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_conferences

Hi Leo:

As a casual NCAA College Football fan, I can take a swing at this. Within Div I, groups of teams (usually regional-ish) are broken down into smaller more manageable conferences with 8-12 or so teams in them. Otherwise you've have hundreds of Div I teams in one bracket. That would be as unmanageable as the current playoff status.

Schedules-what teams play whom when-are mostly within one's own conference, but approximately half of the games played are outside of one's own conference. Usually, when playing outside of one's own conference, other Div I teams are played. Sometimes a Div II opponent will be played.

Div I schools with poor football teams are paid significant sums of money ($300,000-$2 Million+) by other Div I teams with football prowess to get sacrificed to pump up the other team's winning record. Sometimes they cooperate and lose big. Other times, the underdogs will trip up the host Div I team-those times are a hoot!

Complicated as hell...

Oh you have no idea. Now you get to learn about NCAA bylaws and enforcement, ostensibly designed to ensure amateur status for all programs, i.e. make sure no school is surreptitiously paying players to come play for them. In addition, it establishes academic standards to keep the 'educational integrity' of the school, i.e. so schools can't recruit dumb oaf lineman, put him in the Breathing While Walking 'course of study', and then play him.

These bylaws are honored more in the breach than otherwise in all truth, though most violations are minor gaffs like accidently meeting a recruit during 'quiet time' and such. There are a few schools with a history of major violations. Most major issues come from booster clubs rather than coaching staffs, though there are exceptions. Boosters can be ingenious in their methods of feeding money to recruit's families. The sad truth is that many of these kids are black and come from very rough backgrounds. They (and their families) are very susceptible to offers of money for obvious reasons.

College football is a huge business and it is becoming more critical to the many educational institutions' financial bottom line as state monies dry up. And they get their product essentially for free.

Obviously, I just got a new Office 2010. Was tweakin on some stuff; didn't do like I thought it oughta. Called tech support.

<half hour of pushing buttons> "Hello, I am Ragoosh, and to me I am helping for a problem to you directly. And to what it is which is this and a directly problem yes?" < it's a problem with excel> " ... Ahhh, the excellent program, yes, yes, I this all know excellent program to be help you and it is so excellent, and what program is I can be helpful for you?"

It was seriously amusing. Didn't get jack for help, but found out Ragoosh was just 18, His first job, had no clue who Microsoft was, wanted to be an architectural model maker, worked with clay, didn't give a rat's about computers or Americans, he just answers the phone.

This is just too cool. Oh, Brother, this is just too cool. When the fit finally hits the shan, just remember young Brother Ragoosh and know, in your heart of hearts, it wasn't you.

Think I called MS tech support maybe 4 times in the past 20 years. First couple times I might have gotten a bit testoserone, but not lately. I actually liked Ragoosh. A really nice guy, didn't know squat, but was totally willing to "if problem, I have will and helping for you and excellent program what is broken?" Guy was just so totally cool it was worth it to blow off the TechSup ticket and just chat with the dude for a while.

And yes, he's in Mangalore. He has two older sisters. The big one is at Manipal University and will graduate with diplomate in electrical engineering. The middle one is to marry a medical doctor. As I get the conversation, Ragoosh thinks his oldest sister is a fox, and his middle sister is a cow. He may not be the best MS TechSup in the world, but it sure sounds like the lad knows which end of the winkie is the pointy one.

Leo, most of the insanity stems from schools with their individual 100 + year traditions being molded into one big system. What you see in college football today is a system that is still very much a work in progress.

No worries Leo! I'm sure the gang will now inundate the Thread with photo's of airplane crashes. And besides, crashing never bothered me. It's the fun of getting on and off the "self loading sardine cans" that always bothers me. In the USA we have an organization called the Transportation Safety administration , which while supposedly keeps passengers safe , if really dedicated to "security theatre", and secretly exists to keep passengers humiliated and subservient. ("Take off your shoes, strip naked, do The hokey-pokey in front of the x-ray machine. Now dance "the funky chicken!Feel safe yet? No? Then go back to the end of the line and try again!").In reality , it's boring for the TSA workers, and they are merely seeking entertainment.

And spending two hours on a flight followed by four hours to find your baggage.

Hm....maybe I should drive.

I've talked with that guy!!! But he said his name was John........

No....his name was "Bill" and the weather in Bangledesh is fine this time of year.
