The Rita was influenced by some Douglas airliners Japan bought just before the war.  It never went into production because Japanese industry was already strained building single engine fighters.  The US evaluated the prototype after the war (which is why it has American markings in the picture).

In the original WitP the Japanese player could build them, but I don't think many player did.

Yes, In Reliant Admiral (the mod) I was building Rita's in 44 with massive R&D, its a Japanese B29 (20k bombs and nice range) I wouldn't suggest building them - I basically did it for an advantage of having them and It basically murdered my engines, plus I couldn't build enough to take advantage of it.

Yes, the Nakajima G8 Renzan/Rita was quite a different animal to cope with had it been built in numbers earlier. But it was more akin (in bombload) to the B-24 than the B-29.

Hasegawa made a 1/72 scale model of the G8N.  I've got one.  It was pretty close in dimensions to a B-17.  The lines of the DC-4 it was based on are pretty clear:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_DC-4

Being based on an airliner, it may have suffered from some of the same problems that plagued the Fw-200.

The G8N used the same engines as the Ki-84 (Frank) and the N1K-J (George) as well as the B7A (Grace).  All those planes are much more important to the Japanese by 1944.

You got into 44 in our Mod. How did that go? Oopps. Could you comment to the question in the RA 3.0 Thread?

You do realize that all trainers are painted yellow, right? Unless its a joke and I'm missing it?

Well, this isn't a trainer. It's a captured Nakajima G8N that was repainted for testing purposes.

Weren't all captured aircraft repainted at least with large Allied markings and often bright colors (not always, though, as I have a Zero with no paint) so they wouldn't be mistaken for an actual enemy aircraft?

Good catch! Except it's one of the following: C-45 Expeditor, AT-7 Navigator, AT-11 Kansan,UC-45J Navigator or a SNB-1 Kansan.

And this is a "formation ship". Outdated B-24's and B-17's were painted up like circus clowns and use to "form up on" to assemble large formations. This way there was absolutely no doubt which aircraft to form up on.

Right, should have recognized it as a Rita. So bright yellow isn't only for trainers, but the XP aircraft as well. IIRC, the Bell X-1 was bright orange in color when it was test flown.

ya know, depending on the lighting and how the film developed, that Rita could be orange, and not yellow. Hard to tell with older color photos sometimes.

I believe the Japanese also painted their experimental and prototype aircraft orange.  The Rita in the picture above looks like the shade of orange the Japanese used.
