3 days and the 2nd wave will land slightly irritated thought 6 Divs would be enough no matter I prepared a big hammer

I am rotating my CVE TF's to maintain sorties a new TF just arrived so one orf my existing TF's can head to Pearl to replenish sorties

My Fleet CV's are all still ok and in the green

All Divs are ashore and resting awaiting the second wave qwhere they will assist witht he shock attack on landing

When the Monsoon hits I will turn to clean up Andaman Islands etc for now I am driving south with all despatch PZB is in real danger of being cut off and losing the entire Moumien Army

I think he under estimates how resilient my LCU's are I have plenty of supporting AA Regts plus the organic LAA that CW Divs have so he wont be able to do much from the air not in jungle

2nd attack went in and achieved most of what I could have asked for but at heavy cost basically a Div is now trashed and I still dont have the air field.

For everyone crtiquing the air to mud model just remember I have 6 fully prepared fully trained Divs attacking 1 reinforced Japanese Div with total air and sea superiority and I still have not taken the air field on day +6....

Maybe air to mud needs to be stronger when 1000+ aircarft only cause 400 disabled casualties.....

Island combat is all or nothing for control of the AF so there will always be abstractions and I dont think the air to mud model is doing anything but underplaying the impacts

Now thats not to say that using 200 B29's and 1000 feet is not going to break the parameters of the model and give nuts answers but recognise that its not all one way

Correct assessment IMHO.

But you're facing more than one reinforced division. PzB's combat strength on X-Mas (when looking at the units present in the combat report) accounts for about two division (even if only one complete division is present). But once your Corps HQ has completely unloaded you should easily be able to take the base. 2-3 days of attacks, probably (somewhat depending on dice rolls).

Andy, what i do not understand is the following. Here see an combat report two weeks old when i did an assault on Truk. You see my force setup including the central pacific HQ sitting in Ponape (to replace the missing Army HQ). Landing had an additional Amphib HQ in an AGC. As you see it is easy to achieve almost double the non-adjusted allied AV if you do everything right. Have to admit that the assault was not on an atoll so no auto-shock. But you have to achieve at least 1:1 (adjusted AV : AV) in odds if you do everything right.

Ground combat at Truk (112,108)
Allied Deliberate attack
Attacking force 37883 troops, 689 guns, 1132 vehicles, Assault Value = 1750
Defending force 23176 troops, 282 guns, 100 vehicles, Assault Value = 678
Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 7
Allied adjusted assault: 2612
Japanese adjusted defense: 1105
Allied assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 7)
Allied Assault reduces fortifications to 7

i removed the spaces to shrink the part of the report. There has to be something wrong with your attack. (Enemy was out of supply, thats why the japanese AV is so low.)

IMO Andy, you are smashing your own troops by shock attacking at this stage instead of deliberately attacking.
Edit to add: And you still have 4 divisions that are fragments (and possibly poor leaders as a result). Where are the parents?

Nothing wrong with my attack other than the forced auto shock attack for an atoll attack.

Realising I was going to have to shock attack again (I confess I had forgotten Christmas Island is an atoll) I rested my Divs and only unloaded the 2nd wave when my troops were ready to attack again as shock attacks can hurt.

Anyway witht he fall of the airfield my Corps will now move to complete the destruction of the japanese 54th Div which has retreated into the hills the island is not mine yet but at least I have the AF.

Nothing wrong with my attack other than the forced auto shock attack for an atoll attack.

Sorry - I didn't realize that was an auto shock attack. I thought you had ordered another one and didn't understand why that instead of a deliberate.

After 4 days of round the clock attacks on Moulmien today when I needed them most my AF stayed at home.

However this is where my caution and lack of casualties to date pays off.

30,000 casualties hurts but we are now across the river and believe it or not the casualties are an acceptable price to pay

3rd Cdo Bde is at 2/3 strength but fully disabled.
44th, 45th and 14th Chindit Bde are totally trashed as is 26th Indian Div obviously the spearhead of the attack.

The rest are in ok shape apart from high disruption so a couple of days rest before I follow up.

My forces took heavy casualties but it wasnt the total disaster the casualties may indicate

Taking more time to look about I may have inder estimated the dmaage taken most of my Divs now have about a Bn's worth of trioops disabled in addition to the trashed 26th Indian Div its probably about a 10 days before I can be ready to attack as I will need to allow most units to rest up.

I have about 100 Indian Squads in reserve and can disband a few Bns to make good my Divs other than 26th Indian but it will take time - de fact thats what this shock attack cost me time to exploit the breach I have made

PZB inevitably will reinforce and even with the masses of US Army Base Forces with the large support squads numbers and the Corps level Indian Army Service Corps Base forces it will take asome time to recover strength.

I will need to monitor over the next few days the rate of recovery of disabled squads fortuantely they are evenly spread so I should recover quickly - pity about 26th Indian Div - I will replace it on the line the 39th Indian Div switching the force watching the north.

OK its not to bad about 150 AV recovered today it will take time but the HQ's with High Admin ratings and 1.4x support thanks to the large US Army Base Forces and RIASC Base Forces is making a real difference

39th Burma Div is en route to replace 26th Indian Div and 2 more Divs are en route from India where I will rotate them onto the front.

the 5 Divs of IV Corps are en route as well and will be available inside of 10 days.

So I will start bombarding in a day or so but my forces will recover disruption fatigue and disablements quickly with the plenitfull supply of Rangoon nearby

5th Chinese Corps has recovered enough strenght to sub for 39th Indian Div on the Lashio front

Its not ideal but I can bring myself back up to strength inside of a 10 days and I will be happy.

Several Indpt Bns and Bdes have been ordered to Delhi I may need cannibalise a few units to up my replacements pools to bring my Divs back up to strength

been mulling it over all day...

despite the army recoverig fast I doubt I can beat PZB's reinforcements - c 12 units just appeared on the road heading into Moulmien.

Monsoon is only two weeks away, my army won't be ready to attack for at least 10 days I think I may have lost this one.

The time lost getting Rangoon open and re supplying my troops has allowed PZB to get set.

Not totally final but my initial view is have probably lost this one.....he has finally found a position thats hard to flank with some forts not in open terrain and will be able to stop my forces from pushing through - I have a bridgehead over the river but despite 30,000 casualties I dont think I can take the base or easily bypass it by land....

In which case this offensive is over...

Monsoon is two weeks away so I will think it through but my gut says he has finally found a position to stand and it will be good money after bad if I try to invade.....

My army is recovering but probably to slowly c 200 disabled squads are refitting per day but I look at heavy reinforcements heading my way and a monsoon about to hit.

I think its getting close to time to close down this offiensive - I had a good run but against the force I am facing I will batter my head against a brisk wall.

So next steps probably will entail operations v the Andaman Islands and maybe towards Sumatra again objective is to keep PZB honest

I think the Army in Burma will need to rest and recuperate

New Operations Orders for the Fleet.

CENTPAC will take attack into the Marshalls and Gilbers securing both chains of atolls.
SWPAC will attack in the direction of Rabaul and I will begin reconning Truk and consider an all out attack on that base.
SOPAC with minor forces will move up the Solomon Chain but with the very limited forces available I do not expect much
SEAC

I have a lot of options in SEAC....

I basically now have 2 full Armies in Burma with close to 30 Divional Equivalents between Burma and India

To many to use in that theatre with me stymied at Moulmien unless I go all out for a flank attack.

I do have several options.

Having secured Burma I could transfer an Army HQ and 2 Full Inf Corps and an Armoured Corps plus a reinforced Div of Chindits/Paras to SWPAC and use them to take over the drive back into DEI

So 14th Army moves to Australia and takes on Timor - Java is an option....while SWPAC concentrates on Rabaul - Truk.

Or I could mass say 20 Divs somewhere int he rear and try for an all out mega assault on Java/Sumatra ??

My original strategic concept was a strike into the DEI to meet up with a strike from Burma

50% worked and sucked a lot of force out of Japanese hands.

BUT

Christmas Island proved to me how hard the Marianas battles will be so even though I have succeeded in pulling Japanese troops out of position I dont think I have the strength to achieve what I hoped for

Basically Burma is once again a backwater and the question is now what next.

Malaya - to tough
Sumatra - to obvious
Tavoy - a deathtrap
Java - an island to far.....

I need to think what is next but my inclination is to pull forces out of Burma now that my main objective is achieved as 20 Divs could have a powerfull acceleration effect elsewhere speeding up prep time materially.

I have some time so I dont need to make an instant decision

XXXIII Corps is prepped for Andaman Islands so thats a viable target as an interim objective to secure the Bay of Bengal and provide some security to ease up whatever I choose to do next

Took a long look round over night and my concluson is I have 5 options.

1. A corps level attack towards Ching Mai supported by air tran
2. An attack on Andaman Islands
3. An attack on Sumatra/Java
4. Transfer forces to SWPAC to support a drive up through southern DEI
5. Transfer forces to SOPAC to support a drive up through Solomons towards Truk and the Marianas

My initial thoughts are

Undertake 1. as a diversion and 2. as a precursor to declaring the Bay of Bengal an allied waterway

Then 3. or 4.

If I went for Sumatra or Java I could probably Assault Load 20+ Divs and still leve Burma secure.

Against that size of force PZB would struggle to stop me.....

Need to think it through more and work out what I intend to undertake

I'm not sure he would struggle to stop you unless you could seal the islands from reinforcement. He's proven in Burma that he has enough AV to stop you in good defensive terrain.

Move 20 divisions into Java or sumatra and he will just more a proportionate amount of his AV to the same location and dig into the mountains/jungles/whatever.

If you can take the island and establish crushing air superiority to seal off reinforcements you have a shot, but a long campaign where you land the troops then withdraw your navy for fear of KB just invites him to counterinvade.

Bah, Christmas Island only proved that your amphibious assault doctrine needs some improvements
