Hey guys, sorry to take up a thread with questions that have likely been answered but I have never tried to play this before ( although I have owned dw and rots since release of each!) and need some quick help. 2 questions:

1. I designed a re-fueler ship to help...well....re fuel. Now, I have no idea whether I need this or not but regardles, once I designed it and went to the order screen, the order screen does not list any re-fueler ships available to build....any ideas?

2. Is there any reason why I should not build mining stations on absolutely every rock or gas ball that has anything worth mining? If yes, why? My home system looks like a junkyard...just more materials which means more trade right?

I believe there's a technology you need to research before you can build resupply ships, much like you need a certain technology before you can build carriers.

1: You need to create a construction tech to build a resupply ship. To build carriers you need a certain "bomber" tech. So look in the construction tree for a side branch of the "bigger shipyards" line.

2: I think more bases will drain civilian economy, and possible confuse the poor freight captains. I generally leave constructors on auto and intervene every now and then. This means I am no expert on the matters.

you only need to build mines to satisfy demand. you can find your empires demand and the galaxy demand (for export) in the expansion planner.

caslon and hydrogen gas mining bases can also be used for strategic military purposes---refuel bases in expansion territory.

In any system you have a colony, I would say yes (at least early on). This allows you to concentrate your defenses in a few areas rather than all over the place, and keeps resources closer to where they are needed. In most cases you will not outpace the civ sector's ability to profit if you do this (in my experience).

as an aside, remember pirate bases like caslon and hydrogen as well.... if searching for a pesky pirate faction, watch for pirate ships direction of approach and trace back in the general direction to gas clouds and also gas giants in systems --- this will narrow your scouting.

In my latest game, there was a very powerful enemy that was on the other side of an ally of mine. The enemy declared war on my ally, and I declared war in keeping with our Mutual Defense Pact. Some of the enemy's earliest targets were the refueling points near its borders (does the AI do this on purpose, or was this coincidence?).

Since I was playing 15x15 and my ships still had relatively low range... attacking the enemy was a near impossibility. By the time my ships flew there, they had little or no fuel to engage in combat. The answer was to deploy a couple resupply ships in out-of-the-way but nearby systems. I would refuel my fleets at the resupply ships, and launch successful raids into enemy territory.

End of the story: what I lacked in fuel capacity, I made up for in covert ops. With details on their operations, I was able to amass forces to take out their primary fleets in a couple decisive battles. After successful attacks on their shipyards, I landed troops on their planets one-by-one, while keeping blockades on their planets to prevent more ship construction. This was crazy expensive (and damn do planets put up a fight!) due to the large number of ships and troops and extreme war weariness by the time I was done... but I came out of the other side with 3 of the top 10 planets belonging to my empire!

Refuel ships are built on the colony not at the star base just like the colony ships.

Leave all the mining stuff on AUTO, except for Fuel planets. If you see a colony that does not have that FUEL thing (blue barrel), then you need to get some Fuel near there. Tech-up your Fuel Mining stations with some extra shields and blasters and build a Fuel/Gas mining station nearby. You get your Fuel situation squared away, life becomes easy.

2. Because you would need a ludicrous amount of constructors to do this. They build bases slowly. I keep mine flat out (on manual... because I like that) and even in the games where I build more constuctors in the beginning they are never going to get anywhere near building on everything - assuming I have explored even just a tiny bit of the galaxy. Really it's more a question of WHICH rock or gas ball to build a base on.

at the beginning of the game my home world's construction is never idle... colony ships and construction ships. the starbase is building exploration and warships. my gambit is cash on hand is cash not invested for the future.

Ok, one more unrelated question: I want to play in an "honorverse" so-to-speak....so, I want almost all of the races in my galaxy to be humans with different government types. Is there a problem with that? Will diplomacy be screwy if I have all one race?

Yes. Cash willing it is more a question of Colonyship or Constuctionship; Explorer or Warship. Spaceport refits take priority though.

I don't know. Try it and see.

Some notes.

With only human empires
- the empires will like one another more than in a varied galaxy but differing governments should create some tensions
- I believe you will only get human independent races as a consequence of having only human empires. these will all be easily colonisable by everyone...
- there will be major competition for colony worlds early on with everyone wanting continental planets
- there will be a lot of other good quality worlds which remain uncolonisable for a long time
With a couple of other races
- these races may be at a distinct disadvantage diplomatically and when it comes to colonising independent worlds
- these races may do exceedingly well in intial expansion if they have a different type of native planet

Let us know how it turns out

That is the way I do it... that resolved my fuel problems...

I did a massive human only galaxy, and theres one thing you MUST do before you start this.

Edit the races files and copy and paste the human stats, but leave the race ship index seperate, then manually select all the different races in the starting game menu. This way everybody is human, everybody's equal and you have your wish, but they all look different on the screen.

Playing a 15x15 1400 star 16 empire game and having everybody having the same shipsets gets boring quick during the mid and end game!!! Only takes a few minutes to do, if you get stuck let me know and i'll re-do mine again and upload (Only played two games with it and its much more fun the way the makers intended with various races imho)

Resupply ships are a godsend. Even if you just build a few and leave them on Auto, they will automatically go where they are most needed, and seriously increase the fuel efficiency of all Civilian and Automatic Military Ships in the area.

Of course, they are an absolute must if you are doing some kind of long distance invasion, too! By the time most people are building them, you should be able to afford to have a dozen or so on hand. I tend to build many, many more and leave them on Automatic, since most of my ships stay on Automatic.

What is the tech to research to be able to build resupply ships?

I forget the name, but... Look at the bottom of the blue tab (construction). The lower yellow line is the construction yard sizes. The resupply ship is available after researching a tech being a branch (upwards) from the second or third item in this line.

It is the same tech that gives you the massive ship building wonder. On the construction research screen, all the way to bottom, research the first tech and then go to the top tech of the branch. That one right there. For the life of me I cannot remember what it is called.

But you better crash research both to grab it quick before someone else builds it.
