Retrofit to latest for non-fleet ships?

Is there a way to tell all my state ships to just go and retrofit to the latest design, or at least manually select a big group and do it? Right now the only way I know how is to select all of a single hull class in the ships menu, hit retrofit, and select a design. While I like that option, it'd be nice to avoid occasionally having to do that when I'm upgrading a lot of ships from different classes.

I know when you've got researched (and maybe ship design?) automated, when you make a new research breakthrough a window pops up asking if you want to do that so I have to imagine it's possible.

Yes, just multi-select ships (Ctrl-click) in the Ships and Bases screen (F11 key), then click the Retrofit button underneath the list.

If all of the ships you have selected are of the same type (e.g. all Frigates) then you can select which design to retrofit them to. If you have selected a mix of different ship types then they will be retrofitted to the latest design for each.
