Are there any settings that must be set, or should be set when playing the AI (as Allies vs. Japan AI)?

Example, facilities expand at start or auto-upgrades or whatever. Does the AI ~need~ any settings to function?

I want to start a grand campaign vs. AI, just to get a "feel" before I dive into a campaign game as PBEM.
I'm currently playing Guad as PBEM, but I want to get a perspective on the scope difference before going full bore into grand campaign PBEM.

Thanks,
-F-

To the best of my knowledge the AI does what the AI does. For example, Andy Mac recently said the AI does not use PDU On. I see that in my game where I have a lot of Nate squadrons still flying against me in mid-1945. As he also said though, setting PDU to On would give the human an advantage, but setting it to On doesn't make the AI follow that command switch. Things like Sub Ops to Auto aren't applicable, since AI sub ops have to be auto by definition.

I'd set things however you want to play, and the AI will do what it will do regardless. An exception might be in R&D if that's important to you. I've never seen the AI do the R&D tricks humans can pull, but you might give it a leg up if you change that switch.

I personally like to set arrivals to max +/- 60 days variance. I believe that applies to both sides.

The biggest game factor you can control by far is the difficulty level. A Very Hard game is a whole different animal than a Historic.

While we're on that, I was wondering about the effects of changing Realism Options and Game Options mid-campaign while playing as Allied against the AI.

for Instance, if I start at Historical difficulty, then later switch to Hard or Very Hard, will that "confuse" the game at all or does it merely introduce new multipliers when the computer is rolling die and crunching numbers?  I'm paranoid about changing anything in the two groups of options and don't touch them once a game has started, not to mention "patching"...

That's a good question. The only thing I've changed mid-game is turn freq. I went to 2-days in 1943 and like it a lot more.

The biggest difference in the difficulty levels IMO is supply management and consumption. At Very Hard supplies aren't a factor for the AI in combat and sieges. Whether it would still send re-supply convoys to island bases which the human can then sink is a question I don't have an answer to. I'd say that confusion, or at least a period of turns it might take to smooth things out after a change, could deform the game experience. At this point the functions of the various switches is pretty well understood. Thinking carefully before the start is the best route to a good game.

It does not confuse AI. HARD = AI gets logistic bonuses, VERY HARD = AI gets both logictics and combat bonuses.

I don't myself use anything but Historical, since on HARD or VERY HARD, it can become inmpossible to encircle and starve garrisons. IIRC, on VH, AI does not suffer any supply shortages even when cut off. This will make use of historical strategies and tactics impossible.

I recommend no matter what level you play on that you bump it up a level every couple of months for a few days to help the AI out

You mentioned this before and I have followed your advice to good advantage. I normally play at Hard level, and moving from Hard to VH for 2 -3 days / month really seems to help the AI get things sorted out. Can't say as I understand exactly why, but the playing experience is clearly improved.

Much appreciate the tip.

Same for me, although I switch to HARD every week or two to help out AI a bit.

Andy, how do the supply bonuses work? I guess it doesn't get a free extra amount at each base, but rather that any checks requiring supply are always passed successfully?

It would be nice if even at HARD AI would get some supply bonus (on top of what it manages to transfer to a base), but that it still could be cut-off, starved and besieged.

Not really part of the question, but if i edit scen 2 for example and activate "respawn" for the secanrio, does it respawn all ships ? I don't care if i get ships back (playing allies), but i guess it could increase the CPU abilities by a a lot. Anyone ever tried that ? :)

Edit:
My playstyle is like Sardaukars, i play on normal and try to be more historical, but the scripts often lead to massive losses for japan, if you don't ignore anything the computer is doing.
I already increase industrial production before i start a new game, to ensure the computer won't run out of planes, armaments or vehicles (praise the tracker and his designer for understanding the japanese industry model!). But i have trouble to build additinal ships (tried DDs), but the scripts don't seem to use them, and i don't know how the scripts selects them.
