How fares the war?

I was wondering that myself. I suspect Admiral Lord Sprior may be on a secrret mission for the Special Boat Service.

You mean he's up a creek....?

The Grionde, a river, actually.

Here is the message I received last night from French Resistance:

"Message from Swollen Bison (I guess the codeword didn't translate well into French): I'm alive, can you do turn?"

Ah, he is the "designated" paddler up the Gironde.

Rather than reducing his imbibing, which would be the outcome if he had merely hired a Citroen to visit the vinyards, he has decided to avail himself of the splendid opportunity of river and canal travel to traverse the vinyards. Very ancien regime of him and very responsible. Clearly the codeword discloses the splendiferous time he is having helping out the French economy.

*************All Hallows Eve, 1942*************

Arafua Sea: JJ goes after the transports landin 5th Marine Regt at Merauke. Eveidently, they haven't replaced all the Bettys they lost in the landing at PH as they start with balsa wood Nells:

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 24
G3M2 Nell x 17

Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 40

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 6 destroyed
G3M2 Nell: 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40E Warhawk: 1 destroyed

Allied Ships
CL Leander
xAK Sea Fox

Aircraft Attacking:
17 x G3M2 Nell bombing from 6000 feet *
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb

Go P-40E's!

Then the Bettys. The CAP is down to 30 planes but the LYB's are not well escorted and only 6 get throught. They have bombs not torps. They go after USS Detroit which is flagship of the small SCTF.

Raid detected at 68 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 23 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 3
G4M1 Betty x 20

Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 30

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed
G4M1 Betty: 9 destroyed, 1 damaged

No Allied losses

Allied Ships
CL Detroit
DD Sterett

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x G4M1 Betty bombing from 6000 feet
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb, 4 x 60 kg GP

Another group comes in at 6000 ft against the transports. 9 Bettys get through but again they have bombs.

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 8
G4M1 Betty x 9

Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 32

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed
G4M1 Betty: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40E Warhawk: 2 destroyed

Allied Ships
xAP Mungana
CL Leander

A superb performance by 78th FS and 9th FS, both flying the slightly rickity P-40E. Both squadrons are partly composed of veterans from the fight over New Scotland. The 9th actually had 5 aces before the day's battles. They should have a few more now. Merauke is 78% to level 2 airfield and will begin to be a thorn in the side when it can host bombers.

Oz: No attack by the LYB carriers. They, of course, know that we have P-38's that can reach out to 13 hexes. I supect they pulled back out of range again.

More likely somebody tripped over the power cord and unplugged the ENIAC 8000 at work. That sounds like a fun trip, though.

*******Squadron Debrief, 9th FS, USAAF, 20:14, October 31, 1942********

8 or 9 pilots squat indian style on the floor in a circle. In the middle is a smoking device than consists of a water trap and several hoses. In the bowl is the finest hashish that can be procured in Japeanse East Indies (M&M Enterprises, Herbal products Div., naturally). On cue, they all take a long drag from the pipe. Lt. Bong stands and begins to silently replay his fight with his first kill of the morning. He uses his hands to designate the Zero and his plane. The Zero climbs and rolls right but begins to lose airspeed. Lt. Bong's plane holds his airspeed a few seconds longer, allowing the distance to close and the tracers slice through the cockpit of the Zero. Several of the men in the room can actually see a trail of glowing red for the path of the Zero and fluorescent Khaki for the P-40.

There is a collective "WOW...man" from the other pilots followed by insane giggling.

He is quite talented....and has found a way to expand his mind. Also, I think he had quite a few ground attack missions over the Jap tank division on Fiji.

Dude...'kills' is such a judgemental term, man... How about 'mission loves' or 'sending him homes'

Excellent story, Cap.

So, the answer to my question is actually, "He came that way."

I spent a few minutes reviewing the first few pages of our 2x2 "AAR". The Cap'n had a salient point that I believe needs repeating here. What about the stinkin' war, Cap'n?:

"Madre de Dios!

12 pages and nothing has been shot down or sunk yet?

HEY! THE UNIVERSE CALLED!

THEY SAID THEY ARE RUNNING OUT OF ELECTRONS! GET ON WITH IT!"

Hey...I go to my inbox and all I got is a free $20 coupon to spend at someplace called Naked.com. I con't know what that is but I am pretty sure there won't be any AE turn files.

I am embarking some Marines to land at Tanna just for entertainment value. Do you want to know how the embarkation is going?

To be precise, I am sending one Marine Rgt from NZ, one Army Rgt from Fiji, two Bn of armor and some naval support chappies. The heavy hitters will be loaded at about 1/3 capacity so I can get most ashore on day one because there are a ton pf Jap airfields around and I only have 28 F4F's (on Long Island and Copahee) for air cover. Anyone not ashore on day 1 gets a ride back to Fiji.

Prep is going to be poor but if I am going to take the heat off PH then it cant wait.

You do realise those Tanna women are going to become insufferable when they see Japanese and Allied men fighting for their island and the spoils which go to the victor. Hope M&M Enterprises have carefully prepositioned all the victuals for the post fighting celebrations.

Quite of few are working as erstwhile Tahitians given all the Bali Hai Dance Club clones that have opened up in Perth and Geraldton. It is worse than all the fly-by-night Pho restaurants. It's the lure of lucre because of all the GI's loitering around Perth and environs.

Can't vouch for Your Pho King restaurant, but Pho 79 nearby my work (Raymond Ave., St. Paul) has the best tendon that I've ever eaten.

The Uss Tennesse was until recently repairing backwards, due to theft we suspect, in LA. As pieces of her seemed to be dissapearing and we don't believe in genies in our dimension, (except Barbara of course) M&M was a prime suspect. Perhaps Michaelm writing code based on WWIIc into WWIIr1 corrupted by a nefarious element of an alternate AAR>

Uh, Cap, I doubt there is enough "volume" in that keg to result in alcoholism for any group of guys. (But it could make a lot of Coeds happy for an evening at UCLA, if you know what I mean. )

On the other hand, if you could arrange to deliver one or two of those on a daily basis to the goat locker on anything bigger than a DE, you just might have a problem develop.

Sign in today is ZEEMZE, which is Hotentot for a mixture of ground acacia paste, zebra urine and fermented Vildabest milk which is reputed to have psychedelic properties although nobody is really sure as most users just report awakening one or two days later with amnesia, a headache and really bad breath.

**********************Nov. 1, 1942*************************

Oz: No JJ attacks today. The big carrier group has disappeared again. Allied naval cripples returning to Geraldton. Moderately successful air to ground attacks at Port Hedland and airfield attacks at Broome. Unloading of 5th Marine Regt. at Merauke is almost complete. Merauke now is level 2 and has a B-26 squadron and RAAF Hudsons.

SouPac: Embarkation of Marine Regt at Auckland for landing on Tanna almost complete. Embarkation of Army Regt and armor from Fiji will begin tomorrow.
