Hi All

Version 1.7.0.4

The design screen is driving me crazy, or maybe I'm just missing the obvious. Ship design is set on auto with my designs for Escort, Frigate, Destroyer in red indicating a manual design. Every time I seem to look at the design screen with show latest designs set, my ships are no longer current having thus been replaced by auto design and are no longer shown.

This leads to me having to obsolete the latest designs, then exiting the design screen, followed by re-entering the design screen to have my ship reappear, surely this cannot be right?

All manual designs should remain on the latest design screen until obsolete by the player, even if auto design thinks its designs are better, this would allow ships of the same class to be designed for multiple roles. Ideally it should show all manual designs not obsolete by player and latest auto design, but always default to a manual design.

As it is at the moment, I’m thinking its best just to give in and let the auto design get the better of me!!!

Thoughts?

The default is to show latest design only. Look top left (by memory) for the pulldown where you can change this to "all non-obsolete designs".

Hmmm

Yes I know, I just find the whole process around ship design and how auto design update works extremely frustrating!!!

Yes you can design your own ships, but with auto ship design on it's just not worth the hassle.

Turning auto design off is not a realistic option either.

I am playing the 04 update as well, my scientists recently discovered advanced beam weapons and increased construction size. (ships of 300 size) I waiting a few moments and then went into the design screen. The AI cruiser design was still at 308 and thus unusable in its current state and there were no new/updated designs for my other ships.  Yes automated design is on. Is there a certain amount of time I should be waiting for the AI to incorporate new techs?

Hi Whydmer

Don't know if this helps but if you choose the copy function in the design screen on the Cruiser you will be able to remove the troop pods tweaking the design to bring it below 300 then save with a new name hopefully you will then be able to build the cruiser.

Auto design updates as soon as new tech is researched virtually instantaneously.

Thank you Midas, yeah I know how to do that, but I thought that the AI was supposed to be able to redesign the cruiser on its own now to bring it in under 300. This game I was wanting to role-play and not create my own designs if possible. Don't know if I have the patience to do that though. :)

I don't think the AI considers 300 to be cruiser size. It should be ablet to keep it at 400 though, which is usually a problem for AI design until later tech.

I noticed my capital designs sitting smugly at the exact 650 limit of my shipyard. Now, if it could only understand that troop compartments are more pain than good too :)

Is the problem that you want a size 300 warship and the AI isn't designing one for you or that you want a warship classed as a cruiser and the AI isn't designing one small enough for you?

Either way, the highlight of those problems is you're looking for something personalized which is kind of the reason why the option to turn off AI Design is there...

My destroyers are size 350 to 400........frigates are 250ish.........my cruisers start around the 500 range.

But I also design my own.

AI Designs usually do the trick for me. Only on a couple of occasions have I ever felt compelled to design my own ships to get an edge.

You pretty much follow the designs I use with those sizes.

There are lots of ways to fix this problem I think. Just involves a bit of coding by Elliot, which may or may not be simple.

When I reloaded the game this morning I had a nice AI designed cruiser class at at size 294.  I was momentarily excited.  Until I saw that the AI, to get to this size did not remove the troop compartment on its own but rather instead reduced the amount of standard armor down to 1.  But at least it did that.

The AI loves those troop compartments.

AI fighting ships do just fine unless they pick stupid weapons, but what I have the most urge to design is...

- A long range scanner ship. Using resupply ships for scouting feels wrong. If I design myself I put them on capitals.
- Troop carriers that take more than the 4-6-8 of the AI. 20-30 troops reduces clutter.
