Hi all.

I just want to ask at what speed are you playing (i mean the gamespeed)?
I play at the slowest speed, but battles at normal because i had problems with the torpedo and missle graphigs. (see a thread in the bugforum)

I play at the 0.25 (1/4) speed. It can be a little slow in the beginning of a game when there are less objects to control, but in the late game I really need the slowest speed because events happen just too fast to keep up. Of course, pausing helps a lot and lets me take a breath. I have most functions of the game on manual.

For important space battles I like to slow it down all the way and take command. When I am waiting for new important tech or waiting for my war fleets to be prepared I speed the game up, same for when I have no colonies near me when exploring early on. When setting up new bases and or mining operations I usually have it at normal. Ya I play all over the place with my speed settings.

Paused. Actually normal nearly all of the time, but the space bar is my friend. Very rarely I will use .25 or 4x just for a little while.

Almost always at normal speed. Very rarely I speed it up. I've almost never slowed it down below normal, though I probably should!

I would like to play at normal speed but those darn popups keep distracting me.

I have RSI in my Space Bar thumb.

I just declared war on the Securans and still my freighters travel to their hostile systems...it's a good job the alarm.wav sound is no longer used in Legends!!!

LOL!

I play at double speed. I pause briefly early game when attacked or searching the side bar for locations (I use that instead of the planner sometimes).
Life is too short. Play fast and you learn to think fast. I think playing dungeon keeper helped me learn this. The best thing is that I can get a game in in about 2 hours versus what? 4 hours?! Thats a big deal since it means the difference between finishing a game on a work night versus not. And I can pull myself away and go to bed easier when I finish a game.

On the other hand, if I ever have to go up to 4x speed because I am waiting, it usually means I fked something up badly.

I play double or even 4x if I know there's just going to be a long period of waiting.

However, by the time the colonization phase is ending and the late early-game begins, I'm usually playing on normal most of the time, and switching to .25 or .5 during battles, or whenever there's a lot going on (which is most of the time).

Obviously, map size affects this. Rarely do I have to play on .25 on a 400 Star Map except during battles.

I mostly play on .25  .50 Sometimes  i got up to 2x when nothing is going on. I also pause a lot

Unlike some, I feel that I rather have a few slow epic games then a large number of fast games, quality over quantity. I like to control every ship in ever major engagement and get involved into almost every aspect of the game. I like to make sure everything runs smoothly and i dont loose a station to pirates becuase of incompetent AI or something along those lines.

Sometimes I slow down just to watch other empires fight battles in slow motion. If the games flys too fast all the time, it would really break the immersion for me.

I would say that you are making a false choice. An "epic" game vs a "fast" game would be based on elapsed game time not elapsed real time, no?

I like epic games. Just not epic time commitments. I dont see those as mutually inclusive.

Not criticizing your personal preferences.

There's no wrong way to play this game. Settings exist for every concievable play-style, and they're mostly all mutually viable.

Sometimes I want to play a small-ish map in a night, and do. Sometimes I want to play a 1400 Star map with 19 other races, nearly impossible victory conditions, and just generally a very long slog-fest.

The difference between those two styles of play is huge. Simply your approach to game speed and micro-management can create a very different (and sometimes misleading) Distant Worlds experience. I would recommend that all players try all the different styles, instead of just assuming that only one fits them.

My games are generally on pause with just the slightest amount of actual game-play on normal.

0.5 ... rarely use 0.25.

I prefer to be in control of it all and 0.5 suits me nicely. Normal or x2 only and only if I am in an extreme hurry such as having a presentation in 30 mins.
I once used a term 'distant worlds' during the presentation that we were doing for a client referring to some future plans for certain products/services' promotional campaign. "We can offer our clients such and such in future but that's distant worlds for now..." I feel quite proud of that one actually. Obviously, nobody got the joke.

0.5 is most ideal game speed that I simply cannot play without. Normal seems to make the game fly... 0.25 only during MAJOR battles.. those that make me crush my enemies and conquer their worlds! Mwuahaha ... ..got carried away a bit.

but I guess that when a menu is opened then the game is paused ? So in this case, I am most of the time in PAUSE and the rest in 0.25.

I agree, I also have a busy life, and it would be nice to finish a game in 2 hours. Perhaps I'll give another try.

I have tried it before however, and it in some way "cheapened" the experience... I guess we all have preconceived notions of how space battles look and feel. For me is a slow pitched battle between opposing fleets in formation as projectiles and lasers slowly wear out shields then focus fire on wounded ships before they can escape. Sort of like what you would see in a star-wars film. Lets say you were watching starwars, would you speed up the film during cinematic battle sequences? Surely I can finish all 6 episodes in 1 hour at fast speed by fastforwarding but i would probably no enjoy it.

Funnily enough, this slow pace has proved to be quite detrimental to my starcraft2 game, something Ive been playing on and off with friends. Not that it matters so much, i always felt sc2 was a bit too 'arcadish' for my tastes. Even there I enjoy a 1v1 game on normal speed with a good friend much more then a standard 4v4 game on fastest speed possible(since noone else there ever plays any other speed). In fact im noticing a trend in recent games, where speed is increased more and more to try to provide a more 'exciting' experience for the player, yet for people that enjoy slow tactical games or turn based strategy it just cheapens the experience. This is sort of like the 10 minute chess vs free time chess debate thats been raging for a long time being imported to video games. Anyway ill stop now before this turns into a rant.

I play at 2x or 4x when nothing is really happening, normal a good deal of the time, and then slow it down when battles are occurring or I'm in a war where frequent battles are occurring. And pausing, at times, when needed.

Normal speed, with frequent pauses to micro-manage things, but slowing down to x0.5 or x0.25 to look at or control big battles.

While the battles the British fight may differ in the widest possible ways, they invariably have two common characteristics – they are always fought uphill and always at the junction of two or more map sheets.
