... and getting that job would mean you can start to save vacation days for next Christmas, right?

It would, Per. Still contract work for the first 6 months, before converting to permanent employee, but then will save some vacation days for next Christmas. (Unless I burn them on a trip to the Turks in the summer. )

That would be a good thing to "burn" them on, I guess

Good guess, Per, and thanks!

I'm pretty pumped.  It is an amazing company to work for with a fantastic teamwork culture, it's much closer to home, pays more than my previous job at IBM, and I'll have several testers directly reporting to me.  I start the day after the New Year's holiday, on January 3rd.  Great way to begin the new year.

wasn't impressed with Nook myself

why so, Nik?

7inch screen wasn't big enough for my needs. I had concerns about the LCD screen and extended reading. The lack of keyboard proved distressing. I tried to play around with the touch highlight and note taking features and it was buggy and tempermental (and smudged the screen) Finally, with all the note taking i do....it would drain the battery in less than an evening.

Ultimately i went with the DX for size, keyboard, batt life and eInk. Nook makes for a cute magazine, movie, surf, Angry Birds machine.....but not for serious reading. Even the Nook salesman admitted that if reading was my thing....eInk readers were better but the Nook versions they had paled in comparison to the 3rd gen DX with it's improved contrast and the keyboard/joystick control and side buttons make for easy navigation.

All I can say is, WOW!

This is THE THREAD!, John. No one takes ourselves very seriously here. I was making a joke about the 20th Century comment, that is all.

You are absolutely right and I sincerely apoligize. I missed the point and that is my bad. There was no need to tee off on you and I am very sorry for having done so.

There's thousands of people who are way more talented than I, who get those rejection slips almost daily. There are Hemingways and Fitzgeralds out there who get bupkis for their efforts. I just happened to go to one of the 'right' schools (through no fault of mine) and so got some editorial notes along with my rejection notices, indicating what sort of premise would be acceptable. Because I came from (sort of) an acceptable background, I was shown how to lift my knickers and be an engaging whore. Because profit and marketability trumps literature every time. Yep, I whored myself, because the contentions that the publishers want to highlight are within my own paradigm.

My point was to indicate how twisted and unrepresentative the contemporary publishing industry is. It's gotten to the point where one needs to not only look at the Author, but at the Editor, and at the Publisher.

Thought and truth are at a premium in this country. Especially now that the publishing industry is in the hands of those who have their own agendas. I got really lucky. Most people don't get that push. So please don't mess with people on the basis of the usual Internet bullshit descriptions of rejections and such. That's nothing more than wet arrogant pigs grunting in their wallow.

Apology accepted, John. I thought that your insights into the publishing industry were quite interesting...

I just couldn't resist the "20th Century" quip.

I think that goes back to my youth. My dad was in charge of the living history training program for the National Park Service for everything from the colonial era (including St Augustine and San Juan) through the Civil War. His friends used to quip that when normal people came back from business trips they suffered jet lag but my dad would suffer "century lag".

I think I should remember that the folks here are righteous, and not get up on my horse. If your dad suffered from "century lag", he's a man after my own heart. Sorry I tweaked you. Will be a bit more adaptive in the future. Thank you for putting that special sharpie in my butt.

Ciao. J

John,

Somewhere around here I have a copy of "The History of the American Sailing Navy" (at least I think that is the title), which goes into great detail about the building designs of the early Continental and US Navy. Is this one of the books you dislike?

I had my annual review today. They're very happy with my work and patience. They say work is going to pick-up next year and hopefully I move to full-time.

Good vibes in the air for everybody today.

Have a great weekend all.

Let's go Fighting Sioux and beat the Russian Red Stars. Not as good as when thier teams had CCCP across thier jerseys. But still great games.

Night all.

Holy crap, John! You are always full of great lines, but this one may be the funniest thing I've read all year!

I know the industry situation is not very fun, but gallows humor is way better than no humor at all!

Thanks, Schani! This one felt really good from the start, but it's just been a very long 3 weeks, as I went through 4 rounds of interviews (counting the initial phone interview) with a total of 10 people at this company. I've actually talked with 1/7th of the entire company already!
