Folks, I just had a version 4.5 PBEM game abruptly finish at turn 5 of a 22 turn game where I won, but I don't understand why......we were playing an assault/defend engagement. My opponent's infantry forces definitely took a pasting from artillery, while the majority of my forces were relatively unscathed. I confirmed with my opponent that his A0 unit was fine. He did not occupy any vhexes.... I guess the question I have is this: Is the algorithm that checks for victory level different for an "assault/defend" than, say, a "meeting engagement"? This was a weird game as he may have been in a position with his armor when the game ended to beat the snot out of me. Any ideas? Joe Osborne

If one side owns no victory hexes and has >75% of his force is retreat or rout status or goes "broken" - the game can end ina sort of "sudden death". To prevent this always make sure one side owns at least one vhex. You can have 6 perfect IS-3s ready to rampage, but if you have 18 squads or snipers or recon teams dead/routed/retreating, you will be SOL.

Paul, Thanks a bunch on this one. I actually think this is one reason why players either a) shy away from playing assaults, and b.) ask for 3 to 1 odds to assault. It just figures that if you don't own a vhex (and you won't in a battle generated map for an assault) you'd need 2-1 to 3-1 odds in points to prevent this from happening. Great info! Thanks a bunch!
