KANPAC HQ

Major Sofa Kingdom is proud to report on the Chiefs handing the Pack their first loss of the season... Kyle Orton, I love you.

Tim Teblow may have God on his side, but the Pats have Brady...sorry Timmy.

Turn is away to the Japanese side.

All critical lift requests were filled. There was an exchange of 16 P40Es into the replacement pool in exchange for 13 P26As. That fuzzy math at work.

There is a Fuel/Supply convoy forming in LA for transport to Sydney in the next couple of days. I am sure this will be one of many.

There will be more ships available after the IJN Subs are driven off from the PH area.

I need to come up with another sig for this AAR...my Akagi one just won't do!

December 8th orders.

KANPAC HQ

Pearl Harbor

All bombers are on ASW duty, 50%, range anywhere from 1k to 6k feet.
All fighters are on escort duty.
Patrols have been sent out to various islands.

Carriers will be sent BACK to Pearl prior to heading south. Reason being I would like to swap out ships and have the best taskforce makeup possible. Largest endurance for ships, and better AA cruisers.

Entire Pacific Fleet at PH will sit tight until subs leave the area, and then they will head for Tahiti area..

I have created four (4) ASW comprised of four (4) DDs (one has 2 or 3, can't remember) to run out and see if we can bag a sub or two...these are all of the lower endurant ships...

West Coast

Logistics request... should be pretty self explanitory..

Unit Dest
161st Inf Reg Pearl Harbor
34th Inf Reg Pearl Harbor
8th Marines Pago Pago
2nd Marine Def Bt Pago Pago
1 US Amphib Sydney
101st USN BF Pago Pago
198th FA Reg Xmas Isl
113th USAAF BF Pago Pago
205th Coastal AA Pago Pago
808 EAB Pago Pago
47th Cons Bt Pago Pago
111th USN BF Xmas Isl
112th USA BF Pago Pago
206th Coastal AA Xmas Isl
205 FA Reg Pago Pago
II US Fighter HQ Pago Pago

NoPac
Patrols from DH, and maxing Anchorage and Kodak.. nothing major to report.

SoPac
Nothing really to report other than what I have mentioned about strengthening XMas Isl/Pago Pago/Tahiti..

New Zealand
Aircraft are all on training
Select LCUs are moving to Christchurch, Wellington, and Aukland, where they combine to form their larger units...
Cruisers will move up the coast of Auz and head out from there per future plans.

Philippines
Clark Field was completely wrecked on day 1 like I mentioned, so I have moved all AC to other areas.
Fighters are either CAP or LRCAP Manila..
Bombers are all Naval Search, with some being ASW Patrol
LCUs are moving to combine at Bataan, and N of Davao if possible... such a cluster f in this area...
PT Boats put into TF moved north of Bataan and down south into the middle of the islands...

Sketch of Allied strategy in CBI, DEI and Australia

As an experienced WitP player with limited experience in AE and none with scenario 2, here is my outline of defensive plans given the current conditions:

Scenario 2 with extra forces and the KB in the South China Sea turn 1.

1. Shipping in the DEI at risk due to the KB in the general AO.
2. Aggressive Japanese invasions of Malaya (Mersing) and Sumatra (Palembang) likely
3. Surface assets available while valuable to commit to oppose above moves, must be kept as a "fleet in being" to either keep the KB in the AO or slow down other IJN activities. Judicious use of major allied naval forces key to keeping Japanese honest and biding time until good opportunities to hurt the Japanese appear.
4. DEI a lost cause but must be fought. Try to establish a strongpoint at Koepang and at Sumatra (somewhat unlikely given above assessment). As for Java, primary defense along inland Afs. Concede Soerbaja, as it is undefendable, as well as landing places. Key fight is the period prior to invasions, and having rail connected AFs that cannot be naval bombardment best way to at least potentially extract some sort of price.
5. Set up small refuge at Cocos Islands with supply, fuel, and BFs to allow ships to leave immediate DEI area threatened by KB. Turn into staging area for pushes into DEI and evacing from DEI.
6. Malaya will have to survive with what it has. Focus defense at Singapore given the above and minimize forces cutoff by an invasion at Mersing. Try to use Jahore Baru, Malacca and Kuala Lampur as alternate basing for AC given focus on Singapore as long as possible. Given KB presence, jamming supply into Singapore problematic. Be prepared to do so, but be pragmatic about the chances.
7. Japanese will press Burma quick. Defend in and around Pegu, conceding Tavoy and Moulmein. Jam supply into Rangoon as best as possible. Attempt to setup a strongpoint at Shwebo. Heavily depends on supply that can be run into Rangoon. No reinforcements for Burma.
8. All Burma and Malaya reinforcements diverted to Bombay/Karachi. Defense of India set up along two lines: Madras to Bombay and Calcutta to Delhi/Karachi. Garrison key bases with small BF and battalion sized units to hold against Japanese paratroops, with two mobile reserves to counter attack paradrops. Intent is to set as many forces to prepare for Bombay/Karachi and withdraw them best as possible along those two routes. A real timing deal.
9. Ceylon is what it is. Defend it with what it has. It is essentially undefendable, so do the best with what is there. Majority of supplies and fuel will be routed to Bombay rather than Colombo.
10. New Guinea is a lost cause. Will jam supply into PM and Horn Island to shore up defenses, if only to buy time. Defense in SWPAC is really focused south of Brisbane at Sydney and Melbourne.
11. Australia. Setting up strongpoints at Kalgoorlie and ad at Brisbane to slow advances (if they come of course). Will supply Darwin to buy time there as well. Focus on Sydney and Melbourne initially.
12. As Japanese intentions are discern adjust.

After watching the combat replay, I have to say that an AF full of Nells and Bettys at Manado will be a bear for evacts in that area...

This should be interesting. Certainly evidence that they are going to prevent Fortress Palembang and try for a quick knockout at Singapore. Question is what do they want thereafter. The apparent Schwerpunkt of the initial attacks argues for India or Oz in that order, but obviously it's too early to know for sure. That said, even in Scenario 2 the Japanese timetable is too tight to allow for a grand maskirovka tour by KB. My read is thus that they are headed somewhere west of SOPAC.

I would have to agree. As Harvey mentioned, an attack on Rangoon, a Zero sweep, and units in Thailand on day one would indicate an early surge for Burma... possibly a staging area to attack India as soon as possible from...

It will be interesting to see the map once we receive the turn..

I have looked at the combat report, but the map also tells a lot. I realize the first handful of turns have very similar results in all games, but it does tell a different story each time...

Hey denisonh, the black arrows and gold rings on your AAR map aren't quite conspicuous enough...

9 Dec 41

Malaya:

Beginning consolidation around Jahore Baru and Singapore. Moved select airgroups out of Singapore to reconsititute and train to sattelite fields at Djambi, Sabang, Kuala Lampur and Medan. Moving BFs and select ground forces to Singapore/Jahore Baru, as well as Singapore, Kuala Lampur, Jahore Baru and Temuloh. 2 squadrons of Buffaloes at Singapore with range set to 0 to provide some cover and keep from losing too many pilots.

DEI:

Setting targets to projected defense points in Java, Sumatra and Timor. Moving supplies and fuel to defense points, as well as auxilliary ships. Replenishment TFs set up to support operations in eastern Celebes. Houston and Boise in Ternate harbor and staying put pending recon of naval forces at manado. Suspect 2 Myoko class CAs plus DD escort. Too much to try a night intercept. Ternate is under sever weather and no detection, so stalling a turn should be ok. Supporting US and Dutch forces deploying to Kendari/Ambon in preparation of defense of the Timor and east Celebes. Task Force Z positioned to support Kendari, but ready to withdrawl with onset of KB. Set actions in motion to prepare Cocos Island as a evacuation/withdraw point by designating BFs, fuel and supplies to be sent there.

Australia:

Consolidating Aus divisions and setting up defenses. Beginning to move supplies to PM/Horn Island. Staging surface forces at Brisbane for potential forays into NG area. Withdrawing forces at Kaving and Lae to PM. Moved some patrol A/C to Rabaul to watch traffic coming from Truk. CL Adelaide in position to react to any quick invasions in and around Rabaul.

Inida/Burma:

No major changes from past turn.

I am surprised with the Japanese opening. I always had the impression that Hartwig thought it was a strategic mistake on my part when I did it to him.

Will watch with interest!

Nothing really major...

On my front

I have noticed there has not been an attempt to take Wake Isl...subs are retreating from PH area...

I am waiting another turn or two to start sending PacFleet to respective areas... Carriers a day out of Pearl to reorganize with cruisers/destroyers before heading to SOPac..

Putting Patrols at Palmyra, PH, Xmas, Canton, Pago Pago, and Penrhyn, which will cover all areas between Pearl and New Zealand...

Will post New Zealand next turn, as the units will have moved by then... and right now, it is mainly cargo ships and tankers moving about... pretty boring for readers I guess...

Here is the ASW action around Pearl... haven't bagged a sub yet... hope I can get one or two...planes are flying ASW, while some are training naval search... fighters on escort, older fighters training...

Damaged ships reparing at Manila.... two ships still have fires, but all damaged ships are reparing...

KB still hanging around.

As you can see from the combat report... 5 or 6 strikes on Manila... some ships lost... rest were sweeps and airfield runs..

Fighters on escort, but morale is deathly low..

Waiting to sortie the repared subs until the minefield is swept by my sweepers... left them in Manila as they sweep surrounding hexes in addition to their current hex (coastal miners only sweep their own hex)

PT boats sent to northern coast, and the other PT force is making its way to Legaspi area...

EDIT -- finding out RED sucks to put text on the images... will change that next turn..

I am surprised with the Japanese opening. I always had the impression that Hartwig thought it was a strategic mistake on my part when I did it to him.

Will watch with interest!

Ketza, interesting that he would say that, and then proceed with a Manila strike.

In terms of potential VPs from said strike, Pearl is by far better.

A Manila strike and constant pressure in the area makes taking the Phillipinnes far easier I am guessing...those old BBs at Pearl wont do a thing for us until were ready for our push....

Those sub losses will hurt, even if our torps suck first part of the war.

Looking forward to seeing you here. Thank you for your support and interest.

What is a logistics position without spreadsheets? I am working up some of the needs from the West Coast to support the war effort in NZ and AUS.

This is with speed four tankers and speed three cargo ships over 192 hexes of movement (one way LA to Sydney) the following:

3xTanker TFs with 73,920 capacity each. These will be speed 4 TFs so they will make the round trip in 96 days. Roughly once every three months.

4xCargo TFs with 75,200 capacity each. These will be speed 3 TFs so they will make the round trip in 128 days. Roughly once every four months.

So, the plan is to have a tanker TF leave NLT the 14th of each month and a cargo TF leave NLT the 21st of each month.

I would expect Australia to back lift the minimal resources/fuel that NZ needs.

EDIT: Thanks to a hint from rjopel I looked at the islands of Tasmania and New Caledonia which produce a surplus of 52,500 resources a month. This drops the deficit in ANZAC down to 12k for Australia and 6k for New Zealand. This is still 76,800 over 128 days, so we are down to two TFs at 38,400, leaving every other month or one TF at 76,800 every 128 days. Should be doable. Now to just scrap up the excess resources.

Once we can get this moving with them having a home port of LA and no refueling at Sydney we can get them moving on a one TF of each type per month after getting 3 Tanker and 4 Cargo TFs moving.

Since I am normally a JFB, does this sound right with the rest of you AFBs? Am I missing anything? Is sending resource TFs a waste of resources? Do I just send fuel?

Manado will be a Jap airbase eventually. Can delay it if the opportunity presents itself. If he tries to do too much too soon, there will be some chances to poke them in the eye.

Main reason I left the Houston and Boise in Ternate to potentially exploit a gap.

Going to keep forces in the critical areas to exploit any gaps, but will not expend them needlessly. Exploting gaps with small effective attakcs while avoiding exposure to air attacks is all part of the "fleet in being" strategy. Can't stand toe to toe with the KB or even the mini KB early, but can cause some havoc and perpetuate the threat of such havoc.

Having the KB in the area early helps accelerate operations in the DEI, one of the real attractive effects of that strategy. Really indicates a push to quickly secure DEI and move into the IO (read India and NW Australia)

Nice laydown Mike.

Let me know what lift assets you want to use in and around Aus, as I have kept some in Sydney and Melbourne to support local movement requirements. My logistics efforts are focusing on getting reinforcements, supplies and fuel from Capetown (from Eastern US and Abadan) to Perth/Melbourne

Harvey,

This plan only uses the short range xAKLs, most of which are already disbanded in port. One one, TF381 at New Caledonia en route to Brisbane is needed. I don't know what you had planned with it.

For Tasmania we have a total of 120 resource centers producing 2400 resource points a day, there are 60 LI on Tasmania which will consume 900 resource points a day, leaving a surplus of 1500 a day. These should collect at the largest port, Hobart. Over a 30 day period of time there will be 45,000 resource points surplus on this island. Some port statistics to keep in mind: Hobart is a size 4 port with a TF capacity of 48,000 tons with a 18,750 cargo handling rating; Melbourne is a size 7 port with a TF capacity of 104,000 tons with a 72,800 cargo handling rating. The distance between Hobart and Melbourne is 11 hexes for a round trip of 22 hexes. A CS convoy of the xAKLs will move 2 hexes a turn, so we have an 11 day round trip. I am recommending the xAKL's from Melborne, Hobart, and one (1000 capacity) from Adelaide for a total of 17,500 capacity with tonnage much less than Hobart's port size. This TF will take .93 days to load at Hobart and .24 days at Melbourne for a total time of 11+.93+.24=12.17 days for one full round trip. Take 30 days and divide it by the 12.17 for 2.46 trips in a 30 day period. This will move 17,500 x 2.46 = 43,050 resources moved per 30 days.

This TF should assemble at Hobart to make the CS convoy work properly. If you want I can form it up for you next turn.

A simular situation in New Caledonia, you will need the other four xAKLs from Adelaide and the three in TF381 at Noumea. Just have them assemble at Noumea, or I can do it for you. It will move 14,214 resources in 30 days. New Caledonia has 13,500 surplus in 30 days. This will move to Brisbane.

Mike,

Assemble what you need and form the TFs. I have done the same kind of math for moving fuel/supplies out of Abadan/Aden/Capetown. Calculated I need 267,000 tons of tanker capacity moving at 10 knots to move the fuel production at Abadan to Bombay. Faster tankers will help, but that is a lot of tanker capacity as Abadan produces 450,000 fuel per month!

Have done the same analysis for supplies from Aden, Abadan and Capetown.

I am dedicating lift assets to move supply to Rangoon and DEI from Bombay/Colombu, in addition to local distribution in DEI and Australia.

Any capacity beyond that will move supply/fuel from Eastern US to Capetown or release to you if you need it,

GB is not bad, but the eastern US will not run out so is better for setting up continous ops. Really epends on how much shipping I have to dedicate to run material to Capetown. GB may be a good start but then I will run from eastern US beyond as certain level. I will build my spreadsheet to identify the threshold.

We have received the combat turn from Dec 9th, 1941 a few days back, and should receive the turn soon.

Manila
Big Cap'n Diaz had a shot at glory and blew it..... See picture below
Numerous strikes on Manila... My fighter's morale is deathly low, and many are grounded due to damage..
A few subs are back on line
Mines cleared in Bataan, so that we can sortie subs and run out other ships as necessary.

Hawaii
One more turn or so until I will sortie PacFleet once the carriers arrive to rearrange taskforce makeup
ASW patrols didn't hit much or see much this turn I think. I need to check once the turn comes back to see how many subs are spotted, and where they are at.
Subs sortied

NoPac
Fourteen penguins found at Dutch Harbor, while only three were spotted at Kodiak

West Coast/Canada/Panama
Ports continuing to expand along with airfields.
Mike continues to install an excellent pilot training program.
Harvey has requested some aircraft for defense in his theater.
Units continue to load for pre determined destinations set on Dec 7th, and are currently in route.
Saratoga in route to PH, to have three US Carriers online...for a total of five when Hornet and Yorktown come online in a couple of months. Air units are training mostly on the route to Pearl...
All subs sent to Pearl to fuel then sortie from there. Fleets to partol points, S Boats will continue on to Auz

Pacific Islands
Xmas Island, Palmyra, Pago Pago and Suva are our main islands we will fortify with men, material, fuel, and planes.
All islands between Pearl and New Z will soon have patrol aircraft patrolling entire route.
Tarawa was captured by Japanese forces..which isn't a surprise, but is earlier than most games I think.
Wake still hasn't seen any action.. wondering if a carrier tf can still run over, pick up Wildcats and drop them off on one of the above mentioned islands... probably not worth a carrier loss...
Letting Noumea and Loganville be for now... building up bases further from the front first...
Not sure how much to pour into Midway and Palmyra...Midway is an atoll with 6k stacking I believe... can't remember off the top of my head, need to get with Mike and discuss shipping plans if we plan to hold Palmyra and Midway firmly..

New Zealand
Christchurch/Wellington/Auckland continuing to max out with forts/AF/and port facilities.
Most aircraft are set to training at the moment, but did not max out with pilots.
Fighting ships sent to Rabaul area to meet up with Harvey's fighting ships in that area.
Land units should have moved some this turn, will combine them once all units arrive at the three mentioned ports/bases.
