Mandalay was bombed by 102 X Liberator VI, 9 Spitfire VIII and 23 X P-38J. The AA fire was light and inaccurate as a single bomber was damaged. The airfield was heavily damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were triggered and casualties were placed at heavy.

Myitkyina was raided by 9 X B-24J, 1 of which was damaged, for light damage and negligible casualties.

The Hopei Militia Division was struck by 9 Helens and both sides had no losses.

The Japanese bombardment of the Chinese troops at the river crossing produced no results. The Chinese are exhausted from their attack of a couple of days ago and they also have no supplies. The intent of this attack was to pin Japanese troops and draw their attention away from the real threat.

Now that the cat is out of the bag the Japanese are aware of the CW troops menacing Mandalay as they are only about 40 miles away. The question is what the Japanese can do before the actual attack takes place.

The drunk in the corner of the pub is holding court and the men listening to him are nodding their heads and laughing. As long as it's peaceful Pete doesn't bother with it. Sylvia comes by and asks what that's all about and Pete gives a shrug and says, “Beats me, but your dad seems to be amused.”

Gunny leads the company through a close order drill and then the manual of arms. After a few audible moans he announces that, “Since some of you are unhappy today I've decided that we should spend some more time together.” The men stack their weapons and start a strenuous workout with some jumping jacks.

The Lucky 11 have had another training mission scrubbed due to an engine that refused to start. Gil wonders if these planes are really ready for combat. One of the guys answers him when he voices his concerns with, “Hell, are any of us ready for combat?”

Stalin has a cable sent to Tokyo asking that the Japanese allow Lend Lease materials to be shipped into Vladivostok. He doubts Tokyo will permit this, but it doesn't hurt to ask and maybe some saber rattling will help.

The German Chancellery was destroyed by an RAF raid.

The SS S-34 was patrolling near Amboina when an unsuspecting AP appeared. The sub hit it with a torpedo and slipped away.

Pagan was raided by 64 X B-25J, 8 X Spitfire VIII, 8 X Thunderbolt II and a few Catalina Is that were snooping. The Allied planes dished out moderate damage to the base, a number of secondary explosions occurred and personnel sustained very light casualties. There were no planes suffering any kind of damage.

Mandalay was bombed by 103 Liberator VIs, 8 Spitfire VIIIs and 23 P-38Js. None of the planes were damaged as they did
extremely heavy damage to the base, caused many secondary explosions and inflicted heavy losses on the troops.

Myitkyina was hit by 17 X B-24J for light damage. No planes were hit.

A Japanese bombardment caused no losses on the Chinese troops that were targeted as the 2 sides stare at one another from their defensive positions.

The Helena sailed with a CVTF, destination the Marianas. Bill scans the horizon and marvels at the power the USN has. He thinks back to the map in the bowels of the Pentagon and how the Japanese were running the table. Now it's our turn, he thinks.

Slim tells the guys to quit their griping as Gunny will just find something to keep them busy with. That woks and the men quiet down and return to playing cards, writing letters and shooting the breeze.

The Flying Deuces flew back to Wake and then discovered that they have orders to be loaded on transports with their planes for a destination unknown. They had expected some time for a little rest, but that's not in the cards. Stick is eager to get to where the action is so that he can finally test his skills in combat.

The 5th Army attacked the Gustav Line along the Rapido River.

Combat

The SS Seadragon, 22 miles SE of Singapore, put a torpedo into a DD setting it ablaze and causing heavy damage.

The SS S-34, near Amboina, was attacked by 4 DDs and gave them the slip before her location could be pinned down.

The SS Tunny, 69 miles W of Rabaul, placed 2 torpedoes into a MSW. It was assumed that the vessel went under, but the sub didn't loiter to find out.

While the SS Dolphin was laying mines at Panggoe she spotted 4 PGs so she torpedoed 1 of them.

A sweep by 21 P-38Js on Rangoon was opposed by 28 Georges. The combat was fast and furious and 13 Georges went down and all of the Lightnings departed safely.

Pagan was bombed by 59 X B-25J, 8 X Spitfire VIII and 8 X Thunderbolt II. All of the planes departed safely after dumping their loads on the base. The airfield took light damage and a large secondary explosion was seen.

Mandalay was attacked by 101 X Liberator VI, 9 X Spitfire VIII and 23 X P-38J, all of which were undamaged. The base was very heavily damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were seen by the ground troops preparing for an assault and casualties to the personnel was heavy. The 6th AF Construction Battalion was hit by 16 X Thunderbolt II and 7 X Spitfire VIII. Both sides had no losses.

Myitkyina was raided by 13 X B-24J, 1 of which was damaged by flak. The base was lightly damaged and ground losses were light too.

Amboina was hit by 42 X B-24D and 96 X B-24J. The Japanese threw 2 X Zeke and 24 X Zero at them. In the melee a B-24D went down (6 damaged) and 6 X B-24J were destroyed (34 damaged), but they managed to heavily damage the port, cause many secondary explosions, inflict heavy casualties and 8 X Zero were splashed (8 damaged)
Japanese aircraft

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF still holding positions near the river crossing was bombed by 55 X Mitchell and 12 X Warhawk. The unit had heavy casualties. As soon as the last of the bombs fell the Chinese troops rose up from their positions and assaulted the Japanese. Chinese casualties were moderate and Japanese light, but the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was forced to retreat. The Chinese contribution to the British plans have come to fruition.

German children have been mobilized for war work.

Combat

The SS S-38 was near Balikpapan when a lone AP served itself up to her. The sub obliged the unwitting vessel with a torpedo into her port side.

Rangoon was swept by 21 P-38Js, but no Japanese were around to give battle.

Pagan was raided by 58 X B-25J, 7 X Spitfire VIII and 10 X Thunderbolt II. No planes were hit by the sporadic AA fire as they did light damage to the base, caused many secondary explosions and inflicted light casualties.

Mandalay was hammered by 101 X Liberator VI, 9 X Spitfire VIII and 24 X P-38J. 3 bombers were damaged by flak as the base took heavy damage, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and there were very heavy casualties among the ground personnel. Mandalay was then assaulted by the Allied troops, who made good forward progress as they considerably reduced the Japanese defenses. Japanese losses were reportedly extremely heavy and the Allied troops took heavy casualties.

At Lashio the 53rd Construction Battalion was hit by 17 X B-25J and 2 X P-40N. The bombs all missed the mark and 3 bombers were damaged. The 121st IJA Base Force was struck by 27 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N for light casualties while 3 Mitchells were damaged.

Myitkyina was hit by 22 X B-24J and no planes were damaged. The base had light damage done to it, sustained many secondary explosions and had light losses to the troops.

Lautem was raided by 51 X B-25J, 12 X Kittyhawk III, 16 X P-40N, 29 X P-38J and 52 X P-47D. The Japanese had 26 X Zeke, 10 X George, 9 X Jack and 8 X Tony up to contest the attackers. The Allied planes fought their way through the fighters and flak and inflicted moderate damage on the airfield, reported a couple of secondary explosions and caused heavy casualties. This came at the cost of a Mitchell shot down (17 damaged), 9 X Kittyhawk III splashed, 5 X P-40N killed (2 damaged), 5 X P-38J destroyed (1 damaged) and 2 P-47D downed (1 damaged). The Japanese tally was 27 X Zeke killed, 13 X George destroyed, 10 X Jack toasted and 9 X Tony met their demise. This came from the air to air combat and the bombs.

The increased tempo of air bombardment in Burma is hoped to make the assaults go easier.

The last 4 German blockade runners from Japan were sunk in the South Atlantic.

Koniev's 2nd Ukrainian Front extended their offensive in -20 degrees C weather.

2 days ago Montgomery was ordered back to Britain to take command of the British contingent of the Allied Expeditionary Force.

The SS Drum, 84 miles E of Tarakan, attacked and hit an AK with a torpedo, dishing out heavy damage and fires. The sub then slipped away before the escorts could find her.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 6 Helens and had light casualties.

Rangoon was again swept by 23 X P-38J, but the Japanese wouldn't or couldn't come out to play.

The Japanese at Mandalay bombarded the Allied troops, inflicting extremely light casualties. The Allied troops then surged forward and gained more ground as they have now virtually broken through the defenses the Japanese placed around the area. Japanese and Allied casualties were very heavy, with the Japanese getting the worst of it.

At Pagan the sky was suddenly filled with Allied transports that disgorged paratroopers who attacked and took Pagan. They had light losses and the Japanese Construction Bn there ran towards Rangoon.

Gil dozed off for 4 hours during the flight and came to suddenly when the dots and dashes came in over his headphones. He finishes writing down the message and then passes it to Captain Jack. “Divert to secondary target,” it reads. Gel looks at the message and says that getting back to base will be tight so he'll have to slow them down and lean out the mixture a bit. “That should do the engines wonders,” he cracks as he returns to his station. Nobody heard him above the roar of the engines.

Pete's first day of class went fairly well, as he expected. These guys already are familiar with navigation so he's just fine tuning their skills. When he returns to the hotel that evening Sylvia asks, “How'd it go teacher?” He tells her that it was good and then he heads to the pub to take over for the evening.

Stalin is fuming at the reply from Tokyo. It said that ships may pass and serve as targets for the Japanese military. They would not allow any Allied vessels through to the Soviet Union. He then questions his generals and they caution him not to weaken the Army now that the Germans are on the brink of being crushed. He agrees and relishes the thought of capturing Hitler.

The Allies announced that jet planes would soon be in production.

The Air Ministry announced that 157,000 tons of bombs were dropped on Germany in 1943.

The Red Army crossed the 1939 Polish border after a 170 mile advance in the last 2 weeks.

Combat

The SS Parche, 18 miles SW of Amboina, spotted a ML and fed it 3 torpedoes causing it to break apart and disappear before a distress call could be made.

The AK Empire Nile, half way between Dery and Wyndham, was torpedoed and the 2 detonations on her port side tore her open causing heavy damage and fires. To add insult to injury suddenly there are 3 more explosions, but this time on her starboard, as the ship was hammered by what appears to be another sub. Sinking came very quickly and few men made it into the water.

An IJN AK, near Ponggoe, hit a mine and caught fire.

Kunming was hammered by 116 X Helen, 9 X Zeke, 47 X Tojo and 12 X Tony. The Chinese had a CAP aloft of 9 X P-40N and 8 of them were killed along with 5 X B-25J destroyed on the ground as the base took very heavy damage. Badly needed supplies were destroyed and the troops somehow had virtually no losses. The Japanese had 6 X Helen damaged, 2 X Jack shot down and 2 X Tony were lost and another was shot up.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was struck by 36 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N for light casualties and 4 bombers were damaged. The unit still stubbornly holds it's positions in the face of a vastly superior enemy force.

Mandalay fell to the Allied forces with today's attack. The Japanese losses were very heavy while the Allies lost heavily too. Surviving Japanese units retreated towards Lashio.

Winston Churchill happily reads the news from Burma and wonders how far the Japanese can be pushed before their lines firm up and the attackers are spent. He tells the gathered ministers that with any luck Rangoon can be liberated and then, with rest and supplies the ultimate goal of Singapore.

Ships are being assigned to carry the 2nd Marines to their new base. As far as the men are concerned it's just another case of waiting. Slim's squad are once more at the beach swimming, sunning or drinking that awful concoction that no slopchute would ever serve. Slim has fashioned a hammock and stretched it between 2 palm trees and is now sound asleep.

The Lucky 11 are being questioned as to why they aborted their training mission. Capt. Jack and Lt. Pete stand before the officers listening to Gel tell them, “You ask me to stretch a fuel supply, OK, I try. But, when another of these balky engines quits and we're down to 3 and low on fuel that's another thing. I don't mind sticking my neck out to hurt the enemy, but for training I'm not risking the lives of my crew or the plane.” The 3 of them are then dismissed and they salute and depart. The rest of the crew is waiting to find out what happened and Pete tells them nothing. Their next flight is scheduled in 4 days.

A huge armada is bound for the Marianas and this will be the expected kicking in the door. From there plans call for a few different options to be explored as troops, supplies and fuel are constantly being pushed further forward now.

Combat

An AK near Vella Lavella hit a mine and caught fire.

The SS Argonaut, 11 miles SW of Taichu, attacked an AK escorted by 4 X PC and hit it with 2 fish, setting it on fire. The Argonaut departed before she was located, bound for the Pescadores to lay her load of mines. Later her skipper would admit sheepishly that, “The target was just to juicy for me to pass up and the crew's morale was boosted by the attack.”

The SS Pampanito, 143 miles S of Osaka, caught a TK under escort by a PC and an MSW. The TK was struck by 2 torpedoes and was burning. Pampanito didn't hang around to watch the results of her work. Still not done the sub then detected another TK, which she hit with a torpedo, setting it on fire.

Kunming was attacked by 86 Helens, 9 Zekes, 45 Jacks, 9 Tojos and 10 Tonys. 13 P-40Ns gave battle and only 5 returned to their battered base. Between bullets, shells and bombs the Japanese suffered the loss of 5 Jacks, 3 Tonys (1 damaged and had 7 Helens damaged. The Chinese base was heavily damaged, a large secondary explosion could be seen for miles and 9 X B-25J were destroyed. It was considered a miracle that no ground personnel were killed in the raid.

Ground combat about 40 miles from Lashio saw Allied armored units hit the retreating Japanese and cause them heavy casualties. The Allied troops had heavy losses also. The Japanese troops continue their retreat, unable to dig in and slow the following Allied forces.

The Japanese are now trapped in their perimeter at Lashio and Myitkyina is also isolated. Japanese units seem to be closing on Pagan and CW infantry units are moving there to reinforce the paras before the push on Rangoon commences.

The O'Bannon sails as part of the escort of a transport convoy laden with troops and supplies bound for the Marianas. Phil scans the ships that are stretched out over a greater area than the eye can see. The ships are much better at keeping their stations than a couple of years ago, he thinks.

Palawan is loaded and ready to sail once her convoy is ready to sail. Cookie remarks that he's never seen so many ships of so many different types before. Red agrees and suggests that the war might actually come to a favorable conclusion, eventually.

The Flying Deuces are already aboard a ship that will sail very shortly. They are now told that they are bound for the island of Saipan. “Where's that?” asks one of the pilots. Another chimes in with, “We need a map to know where the hell we are and where we're going to be.” Stick is excited because he thinks that this will finally lead to some real combat for his squadron.

Sam has been told to standby for orders to board a ship pending proper facilities. The 25th Infantry Division, having drawn Saipan for a target is scheduled to land at Guam after it is secured and then from there they will hit their target.

Elaine reads a couple of letters from Gil and she remarks to her sister that it's awful not knowing anything about what he's doing or where he's doing it.

Sandy hasn't gotten a letter in over a week and she's becoming more anxious with each passing day. Dave tries to relax her, but it's a lost cause.

FDR listens to the briefing and is happy to know that the Marianas operation is now in full swing. Guam and Tinian look like they should fall easily, but Saipan is heavily fortified and the garrison is large. The plan is for air and naval assets to pound Saipan's defenses for a while before the invasion takes place with what is hoped will be overwhelming force.

The continued Japanese defensive collapse in Burma give the British subject something to cheer about as it's been a long time since anything but bad news came out of that theater of operations.

Count Ciano and 18 other Fascists responsible for the fall of Mussolini go on trial.

Combat

The SS Drum, 143 miles NE of Tarakan, attacked and hit an MSW with a torpedo sinking it. She couldn't loiter to observe as a DD, PG, PC and 3 other MSWs started looking for her.

The SS Burrfish, 74 miles S of Kagoshima, forced to dive by 4 X PG and 2 X PC who never got a fix on her. In the afternoon the Japanese appeared again and the sub dove deep and evaded her would be attackers.

Chungking was swept by 10 X Jack, 38 X Nick and 75 X Tony. 50 X P-40N gave battle and 45 of them were destroyed while they killed 3 X Nick, 28 X Tony (another damaged) and downed a Dinah.

Rangoon was bombed by 38 X B-24J and flak damaged 18 of the planes while they did light damage to the airfield, caused a large secondary explosion and inflicted light casualties.

Myitkyina was attacked by 116 X Liberator VI, 9 X Spitfire VIII and 23 X P-38J. 4 of the Liberators were damaged by AA fire. Damage to the base was very heavy and many secondary explosions happened while ground troops sustained light losses.

Lautem was swept by 62 X P-47D while a Mosquito PR.IX flitted around taking photos of the area. 8 X Zeke, 39 X George, 6 X Jack and 9 X Tony faced the onslaught of the Jugs and 5 Zekes, 28 Georges, 6 Jacks and 9 Tonys perished for their efforts. The Americans lost 7 Thunderbolts and had 4 others damaged.

The Hopei Militia Division was bombed by 6 Helens and both sides had no losses.

“India? Are you nuts? Where did you hear this?” All of these questions and more were heaped on the HQs clerk who tried to answer them one at a time. In the end it turns out that the rumors are that the first B-29 formations are shipping out to the Far East. Gil wonders if that's them, but they've been told nothing other than their immediate training schedule. He supposes that if it's true then it must be for crews more advanced in the training cycle. He and the rest of the enlisted men of the Lucky 11 talk about these rumors and all they can figure out is that they probably won't be going to Europe. Gel says, “I already told you guys that I had figured out that Europe wasn't in the cards for us.”

The ships plod towards the Marianas and this particular convoy stretches over the horizon and Phil knows that this is only one of many. How strong has the US become, he wonders. Frank comes on the bridge and relieves him so he stops for a mug of coffee an something to eat before turning in.

Sam continues to watch ships loading a wonders if it will ever end. “I'd hate to be on the receiving end of all of that,” he says to the guys with him. What's really on their minds is when will it be their turn and what will ultimately lie wait for them.

Dave is muttering about not being able to find even old reconditioned parts. “How the hell am I supposed to keep these old clunkers running for folks? I'm running out of chewing gum and chicken wire to fix things with,” he huffs. Sandy has brought him a mug of coffee and hands it to him. He says, “That lucky Bill. Does he really know what a gem I have for a daughter?”

The Allied troops continue to push after the retreating Japanese to prevent them from regrouping. In the meantime other units continue to press on towards their objectives.

Combat

The Dutch DDs Van Ghent, Kortenaer, Witte de With, Banckert, Tjerk Hiddes and Van Galen located a Japanese sub and they immediately attacked it giving it a horrible pasting which resulted in the sub trying to surface before it sank.

The SS Gunnel, 12 miles N of Batan Island, was ineffectually attacked by 3 MSWs.

The British DDs Nestor, Nepal and Napier found a sub 81 miles from Darwin and attacked it scoring many hits.

At Chungking a Dinah was jumped by 4 X P-40N and though it got shot up the plane managed to make it into the clouds before a death blow could be struck. The Chinese pilots searched for the Japanese plane, but couldn't find it.

Myitkyina was bombed by 112 X Liberator VI, 7 X Spitfire VIII and 23 X P-38J. 3 of the bombers were damaged by flak as they dumped their loads. The base was very heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions and personnel had extremely light casualties.

Lautem was attacked by 54 X B-25J, 44 X B-24D, 91 X B-24J, 24 X Kittyhawk III, 47 X P-38J and 49 X P-47D. The Japanese threw 8 X Zeke, 30 X George, 6 X Jack and a Tony at them and between the furball and bombs cost the Japanese 9 X Zeke , 34 X George, 8 X Jack, 2 X Tony, 18 X Betty, 7 X Helen, an Emily and a Dinah destroyed. The airfield was very heavily damaged, the port was moderately damaged, a large number of secondary explosions occurred and casualties were very heavy. A B-25J was shot down (10 damaged), a B-24D was damaged, 2 X B-24J went down (10 damaged), 6 X Kittyhawk III were splashed and 6 X P-38J are no more (5 damaged). The Thunderbolt -Ds are proving to be world beaters.

The 23rd AA Regiment, 15 miles from Pagan, was pounded by 48 X B-25J (2 damaged) and 22 X Thunderbolt II (2 damaged). The unit had heavy losses.

The Hopei Militia Division was attacked by 9 Helens and once more both sides had no losses.

The Chinese are just about at the end of their air assets and the British have offered basing in India so that the Chinese formations may rearm, refit and train. It is being seriously considered by the Chinese.

The ships continue their seeming endless process of loading and then being replaced by the next vessel, all bound for the Marianas. This will be the largest military undertaking for the US to date as the Army and Navy are throwing their combined weight into this one.

Major Smith is continuing his never ending campaign for a combat command. Finally he's told after a staff meeting that if he were a Captain it would’ve been a done deal by now, but he's kind of caught in between by his rank. This isn't what he wanted to hear, but he won't give up as he's a Marine.

On board another ship and no flying for a while at least leaves the pilots of the Flying Deuces bored. So like any bored Marine they manage to find something to occupy their time. A crap game has started and there are a couple of poker games going on. Of course anybody is welcomed to play, as long as they have the dough. Stick avoids the gambling and writes a letter to his folks.

Slim passes the word that the 2nd Marine Division have been ordered to get everything squared away and all liberties have been canceled. The scoop is that they will be loaded onto transports soon and then be on their way. “Does this mean that I can't get any more pogey bait?” asks an assistant gunner. Slim laughs and says that obtaining a fresh supply from outside of their area will result in the offender being under hack.

Pete returns from giving his class and tells Sylvia that the guys in the class are a bunch of pretty bright and eager students. He then gives he a hug and asks how she's feeling to which the response is “Good.”

The Russians took Ldvipolyun.

Early thaws have aided German defenses.

The trial that began on the 8th has resulted in all but 1 of the 19 defendants being sentenced to death.

Combat

A D4Y Judy attacked the Burrfish about 77 miles E of the Amani Group. The Burrfish reported that it was hit while the radar unit was malfunctioning. The flooding is beyond repair and the crew gets off into rafts while their skipper scuttles the boat and is killed in the process.

The SS Grouper, 12 E of Okinawa, tried and failed to attack a heavily escorted AK.

SS Parche, 16 miles E of Kendari, tried to hit a ML, but couldn't pull it off. Later in the day an IJN ASW TF attacked, but did no damage.

The SS S-34 had just finished laying her load of mines at Amboina when along came an AP. She hit it with a torpedo causing it to burn. The escort then put the sub through a brutal DC attack and now with light systems damage and some minor flooding the sub will make for Darwin.

Myitkyina was raided by 107 X Liberator VI, 9 X Spitfire VIII and 21 X P-38J. AA fire claimed a bomber and damaged 2 others while the base was heavily damaged, casualties were light and many secondary explosions were seen.

The 23rd AA Regiment was struck again by 45 X B-25J and 21 X Thunderbolt II. 4 of the bombers were damaged and the LCU took heavy losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was visited by 9 Helens and both sides suffered no damage at all.

Tomorrow, at dawn an assault on Lashio will take place. It is hoped that the Japanese will be forced to vacate their positions and displace into the jungles where they will wither on the vine.

Gil reads a letter as he drinks a cup of coffee. He can't get used to how cold the desert can get. He always thought of the desert as a hot, dry and sandy place. Boy was I wrong, he thinks.

Elaine is bored and her friends are busy with the USO club, work or have dates. She doesn't even have a letter to read. It's to cold to take a walk and since she has nothing else to do she goes downstairs and helps her mother with the wash. Elaine loads a towel and turns the handle on the crank to draw it through the wringer. She repeats it and sets the towel aside and begins on another. Later after that is done she carries a basket full of towels outside to hang on the line. They will take long to dry in this cold, but at least the breeze will help.

After class is over Pete prepares to leave when he notices that his students are all still in the room. “What's up?” he asks and one of them tells him that he's legendary in that he survived fighting the Japanese around Darwin when they attacked and then he survived the plane crash and the outback. They want to know how he survived the later. Pete ponders the question, smiles and says, “I'd like to claim that superior navigational skills saved me, but that would be a lie. It didn't hurt to have those skills, but sheer luck is why I'm standing in front of you today. Hell, I even tell my wife that I'm a lucky guy.” The students laugh and one of them says that with a pretty wife like Pete has any man would be lucky.

Ships continue to form into convoys and are joined by their escorts as they join other convoys for the trip to the Marianas.

Count Caino and 17 others were executed by firing squad.

660 heavy bombers of the US 8th Air Force attacked Braunschweig, Magdeburg and Ascherleben.

Combat

An IJN MSW encountered a mine field at Amboina and started sweeping it.

SS Dorado, 94 miles E of Kagoshima, tried to get an attack in on a lightly escorted TK, but failed to achieve a favorable position from which to launch her fish.

Rangoon was bombed by 15 X B-25J, of which the AA fire claimed 1 and damaged 6 others. The airfield was lightly damaged, there was a large secondary explosion and troops had light losses.

Myitkyina was attacked by 108 Liberator VIs, 10 Spitfire VIIIS and 23 P-38Js. The flak was light and 3 bombers were damaged as the base was heavily damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and casualties to the troops were light.

The 6th AF Construction Battalion, 17 miles NE of Pagan, was attacked by 12 X Thunderbolt II and 10 X Spitfire VIII. The unit had light casualties and all of the planes departed safely.

Lashio was assaulted by the Allied troops and they captured the base, cutting through the defenses like a hot knife through butter. The Japanese had very heavy losses and the Allies had heavy casualties. The Japanese retreated towards Myitkyina. The Allies hope to bottle these forces up, bomb and starve them to death.

Pete has a new found rapport with his students. They are rightfully impressed by his well deserved reputation and even more so by the humble nature that he deals with it. When today's class ended a student approached him and asked for advice on what to do if the Japanese captured you. Pete gave the immediate answer of, “Don't let them take you as their reputation of dealing with prisoners is no myth. They respect the warrior and those who die fighting, anyone who would allow themselves to be captured is held in contempt.” The student thanks him and wonders what he would do faced with that situation. Pete's students are destined to be flying in and out of areas held by the Japanese and they will be on their own. Later in the day, as he's leaving, he bumps into one of the survival instructors. They chat briefly and the man heads back to the hotel with Pete to lift a pint and talk.

Dave reads the newspaper that tells of Allied advances in Burma and he asks Sandy if they have a world map. She tells him that they don't, but he can see one in town. “OK, gal I get it. We'll go into town after breakfast and I'll drop you off at the Post Office.” She smiles and promises to be ready to leave when he is.

At Luganville a convoy begins unloading troops and the gathered Marines watching them bark like dogs. “Look at them,” says Slim, “They are wearing glasses, are either to young to shave or are old enough to know better. The Army must be hurting for manpower.” The guys laugh, though they were all pretty young when the enlisted into the Corps. This must be the division that's supposed to replace them, they reason. That can only mean one thing, their departure is imminent.

The SS Swordfish,89 miles SW of Amboina, nailed a ML with 2 torpedoes, sinking it.

Myitkyina was bombed by 117 X Liberator VI, 9 X Spitfire VIII and 24 X P-38J. 3 bombers were damaged by AA fire and the base was heavily damaged, some secondary explosions were claimed and the casualties to the ground personnel was light. A little while later the 55th Division was bombed by 27 X B-24J. One bomber went down and troop losses were light.

Kai Island was the target for 37 X B-25J, 9 X Kittyhawk III and 27 X P-38J. A Mitchell was destroyed by flak and 6 others were damaged. The airfield was lightly damaged and casualties were light.

Dili was attacked by 43 X B-24D and 3 X P-38J. 7 Zekes attacked the Allied planes and between their halfhearted effort and the AA fire 2 bombers were damaged. A Zeke was shot down and another was damaged while the airfield was lightly damaged, 3 Frances were trashed, a few secondary explosions were observed and troop losses were light.

Lautem was the object of attention for 47 X B-24D, 94 X B-24J, 9 X Kittyhawk III, 15 X P-40N and 3 X P-38J. Flak accounted for 5 X B-24D damaged, a B-24J destroyed and 10 others were damaged. The airfield was heavily damaged, 3 X Betty were destroyed, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were very heavy.

The 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade, at Rangoon, was hit by 15 X B-25J. 2 Mitchells were shot down and 8 more were damaged as the Japanese unit sustained light losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had light losses because of the visit paid on them by 9 Helens.

The SS KIX ,11 miles NW of Lautem7, tried to attack a ML, but failed.

The SS Pampanito, 85 miles E of Kagoshima, caught 3 PCs and fed one of them a fish.

A Japanese float plane was spotted on the BB New Jersey's radar. It was assumed to be a float plane from a sub as it's a bit far east to come from surface units, or at least it is hoped so.

The Allied troops in Burma are now pushing the Japanese into Myitkyina and towards Rangoon while they consolidate their positions. With the hoped for fall of Myitkyina supplies to China will be able to flow unhindered.

The SS Parche,77 miles SE of Kendari, was spotted running on the surface by a maritime patrol plane and not to much later 5 DDs appeared and searched vainly for her. This was another case of radar saving the day.

Chungking was swept by 105 X Zeke, 13 X Jack, 6 X Tojo, 12 X Nick, 48 X Tony and a Dinah. The Chinese threw 41 X P-40N into the air and the fight was on. Only 2 Warhawks made it back to base and 9 X Zeke were shot down, 2 X Jack were destroyed, 6 X Tojo were downed, 2 X Nick were flamed (another damaged), 13 X Tony were eliminated (1 damaged) and the Dinah was killed. It was not a good day for Chinese aviation.

Rangoon was raided by 39 X B-25J and flak damaged 12 of them. The port was lightly damaged, there were many secondary explosions and ground losses were heavy.

Myitkyina was bombed by 44 X B-24J, 117 X Liberator VI, 7 X Spitfire VIII and 25 X P-38J. A B-24J and 3 Liberator VIs were damaged as they unloaded on the airfield that was extremely heavily damaged. Some secondary explosions were triggered and casualties were placed at light for the troops.

Lautem was raided by 13 X B-24J, 10 X Kittyhawk III and 67 X P-47D. A bomber was destroyed and 8 damaged by ground fire and the airfield was lightly damaged. There were a couple of secondary explosions and troops had light casualties.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force watched 9 Helens dump their loads off target.

An Allied attack about 147 miles from Rangoon inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese and forced the unit to retreat towards Rangoon while Allied troops had light casualties.

Major Smith is being driven to the HQs of the 1st Marine Division and the driver must think he's in a race. Tom taps the driver on the shoulder and tells the man to slow down and the driver turns his head to respond as they are taking a curve. Directly in front of them is a column of Stuart tanks, stopped in the road. The jeep veers wildly to avoid hitting the last tank in the line and careens off the road, doing a flip, launching the two men into the air. A soldier sees what has happened and screams for a medic. The response is fast, but to no avail as both men are pronounced dead at the scene. To some of the men in the area that have never seen a dead person before the scene is chilling and more than a few of them are sickened at the sight.

Stick is amazed that every time the Flying Deuces are loaded onto a ship the gambling begins almost immediately. “Well son,” says one of the pilots, “We all need something to do and besides the money won't do you any good if you die in this here war.” This brings a chuckle and one of the guys winning tells them that he intends to live to enjoy his winnings. Stick heads topside and then finds an out of the way spot and starts to read a book.

Slim is told that as soon as the ships are cleaned up they will start boarding. “That's good because none of us wants to live in doggie slop,” he replies. So now they know that they'll depart Luganville very soon.

Sandy is dismayed that there has been no mail from Bill in a while. Dave tells here that if a ship is at sea there are no Post Offices there so soon enough there will be a flood of letters. “Try and relax, he's fine,” he tells her.

Kunming was bombed by 110 X Helen, 20 X Jack, 9 X Tojo and 24 X Tony. 5 X P-40N rose to meet the attack and between air to air, and bombs the Chinese lost 9 X P-40N, 15 X B-25J, the airfield was moderately damaged, supplies were burning and the personnel sustained light casualties. The Japanese had 2 X Tony go down and 2 X Helen were destroyed (13 damaged). At this point in time Chinese aviation is virtually nonexistent and the Pentagon is arguing against sending any more planes as it's been likened to “flushing them down the toilet.” The Department of State argues for sending more planes “to keep the Chinese in it and to tie down Japanese planes.”

Lautem was raided by 87 X B-24D and the AA claimed 2 destroyed and 29 damaged. The airfield was very heavily damaged, many secondary explosions were seen, a Betty was destroyed and the troops had moderate losses.

Marcus Island was hit by 33 X B-24D and flak knocked 1 of them down and damaged 15 others. The airfield was lightly damaged and 2 large secondary explosions were claimed.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 6 Helens and the bombs fell harmlessly.

Red is sitting in the radio shack with his feet up on the small desk reading a magazine when Cookie stops by and asks, “Are you hungry? I've noticed that you hardly ever get out of this little cabin.” Red tells him that he's been busy teaching another crewman so that his skill level increases enough that Red can actually trust him to receive messages. “The company won't like it much if he gets cocky and wants the pay rate for a radio operator. Anyway I brought this for you since I suspected that you'd be stuck here for a change. By the way I think that Lucky misses playing with you. See ya later,” and Cookie leaves with a wave.

“It's going to take more time than we thought to put together the ships to transport us,” says the major. A moan goes up and he continues, “The ships that we thought were for us have been assigned another task. We now have to await the arrival of another convoy before we leave here.” After the meeting the word is passed down the chain of command, finally being passed to the NCOs who will tell the men.

Sylvia has noticed that Pete's students have started to come to the pub and she takes the time to greet them. She says, “You get Pete in the classroom and the rest of the time he's mine.” The guys grin and laugh telling her that they wouldn't dare try to steal him away from her.

At the briefing FDR is told that landings on Guam are scheduled for the 21st and Tinian on the 22nd. FDR asks about Saipan and he's told that depends on how things go on the other 2 islands. “We want to use naval bombardments and we want to dump bombs on the Japanese defenses there before throwing troops ashore as it's the most heavily defended island in the Marianas.” FDR nods his approval and things move on. “About China, we have made arrangements for the Chinese to reconstitute their air formations in India. The Brits are ready to take them in and we have aircraft waiting for them. All we need to do is to convince the Chinese to do this.”

Combat

The SS S-30, 78 miles SE of Gili Gili, had just managed to penetrate the screen of an AK when suddenly she was forced to veer off and dive deeper to avoid the attack that the escorts rained down on her. No damage was done, but the attack was foiled.

The SS Pampanito, 24 miles E of Kagoshima, spotted, stalked and attacked 3 PCs, a PG and an MSW. A PC was unlucky enough to have 2 torpedoes slam into her, sinking the vessel. The other ships tried to pin and attack the sub, but she escaped unharmed. A few hours later the ships located and attacked Pampanito again and once more she evaded them.

The SS Grouper, 79 miles NE of Okinawa, was attacked by 4 PCs. The sub managed to avoid the worst of the attack, but has taken moderate systems damage and moderate flooding. She will now make for Wake Island.

Myitkyina was pounded by 86 Liberator VIs, 32 B-24Js and 8 Spitfire VIIIs. 5 of the Liberator VIs were damaged. The base was very heavily damaged, there were a great many secondary explosions and ground losses were light. 38 P-38Js attacked 55th Division causing light casualties while getting 5 planes damaged.

Lautem was hit by 131 X B-25J and 24 X Kittyhawk III. Flak brought down 2 bombers and damaged 16 others. The port was moderately damaged and there were many secondary explosions seen. The ground personnel sustained light losses. No sooner had the raid departed than 47 X B-24D appeared and struck the airfield doing moderate damage, causing a lone secondary explosion, destroying a Betty and inflicting heavy losses on the troops there. 132 of the bombers were damaged by the AA.

Sorong's port was attacked by 27 X B-24J. No planes were damaged as they did light damage to the port and caused many secondary explosions. It had been hoped that the raid would catch ships, but they were gone.

The Hopei Militia Division was bombed by 4 Helens and all of the bombs crashed into the ground harmlessly.

Allied troops rolled into an undefended Taung Gyi.

The British commanders are more than pleased with the results of their offensive and cast their eyes towards Rangoon. They have troops moving to Chandupur that will attack Moulmein from the sea. It is argued that this amphibious operation in not needed, but it has been decided that a quick grab at the base will be made and then from there Tavoy and Rahaeng will be attacked. If this works the Japanese troops will be cut off.

Pete sips his tea as he reads a newspaper telling of the Allied bombings of the Japanese on the island of Timor. “Never should've been there in the first place,” he mutters. He looks at the clock at decides he better get going if he's to arrive on time to give his class.

Sandy is still having to deal with no letters from Bill. One of her friends suggests that getting caught up with a Navy man might have been a mistake. A cold glare from Sandy shut her up.

Red's student is improving, but Red is afraid to leave the radio for fear that the man isn't up to the task of receiving messages yet. Captain Demesa has repeatedly tried to get Red to relax and trust the guy. Finally it's Cookie who tells him, “You can't spend every waking hour for the rest of your life in this cabin. You learned and so will he if you just give him the chances you were given.” Red finally promises to relax and says that he'll stop by the galley for a snack in a little while.

The CL Helena is holding together remarkably well considering the demands that have been placed on her. Soon it will be time for a refit and some upgrades. Bill continues to hold hopes that the yard at Mare Island or even Bremerton will be their destination for this work. Jeff teases him with, “Even San Diego or Los Angeles wouldn't be so bad.” Bill smiles and agrees before heading for his cabin to add to the mounting pile of letters he's written to Sandy.

Chungking was swept by 98 Zeke x 98, J2M Jack x 36, 21 Nick and a Dinah. 27 X P-40N accepted the challenge and 23 of them were shot down. They gave a good account of themselves as 14 X Zeke were destroyed (1 damaged), 7 X Jack went down (1 damaged), 20 X Nick were killed and the Dinah was shot down.

Myitkyina was bombed by 108 X Liberator VI, 47 X B-24J, 7 X Spitfire VIII and 24 X P-38J. The flak claimed 4 Liberator VIs damaged while the base was extremely heavily damaged, many secondary explosions were reported and personnel had light casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had light losses from an attack made by 12 Helens.

The Chinese still will not admit that they are crumbling in the face of the Japanese onslaught in the air.

Gil sits in the NCO Club enjoying a Coke, reading a letter from Elaine. She tells him of how cold it's been and how nice it would be to have him around to help keep her warm. When Brownie asks about the letter and Gil said his girl sent it Brownie made a fast grab saying, “Let's see.” Donny, the central fire control gunner, ran interference for the theft and after a quick read the whole hall hears, “I wish you were here to keep me warm.” The place breaks into catcalls and laughter while Gil's face is flushed with embarrassment. Brownie hands the letter back and says to Gil, “I wish I had a girl who said that to me you lucky so and so.”

Stick has a new appreciation for the worst bases as they're by far better than being stuck on a ship. The boredom is awful and now they aren't even allowed topside, for security reasons.

Slim watches the seemingly endless flow of Marines boarding ships and wonders when the convoy will sail. He begins to feel self doubt about how he'll be in combat now that he's responsible for telling others what to do. I liked being told what to do, he thinks, it was so simple to follow orders and now I have to tell people. I wonder if I'll make the right calls? What if I screw up and somebody gets hurt or even killed? “Oh hell! I've got to stop beating myself up,” he says out loud. Gunny hears him and asks if he's worried about the weight of the stripes and Slim nods. Gunny tells him to relax and tells him that he'll be fine.

Army Group Center repelled repeated Red Army attacks in the Vitebsk area.

Saipan's port was lightly damaged in an attack made by 18 X TBF and 13 X F6F. Flak downed 3 TBFs and damaged 8 others. A large secondary explosion was seen and troops losses were thought to have been light.

Tinian was attacked by 9 X TBF, 18 X TBM and 15 X F6F. AA fire damaged a TBF and a TBM. No damaged was done by the planes.

B-29s are rolling off the production line and as their numbers increase units are marrying up with their new planes. Soon they'll be committed to battle. In the meantime the Lucky 11 are still in training and they are a while away from becoming part of an operation unit.

Benham probes the depths with her sonar, ever on the alert for subs, while the AKs continue to unload at Ndini.

O'Bannon holds her station as a convoy escort for the ships that carry the follow on forces bound for Tinian. Phil hopes that this time around the minefields are smaller and that the sweepers are afforded better protection so that the entire operation doesn't go straight to hell again. “This war is bad for the nerves,” he kids Frank as both of them try not to show how tense they really are.

Ed has 2 TFs heading in to bombard Guam as the sweepers tackle the expected minefields. More sweepers are standing by pending what is detected and another TF earmarked for bombardments is on the way. Ed wonders about mines and if they are there how they will be dealt with without the loss of the MSWs. He knows that the USN will have air superiority, but the IJN can always manage to somehow turn up with a surface force at the most inopportune times, avoiding the USN's surface combat assets somehow.

The Germans were encircled at Novgorod, but managed to breakout.

Combat

The SS Pampanito, 21 miles E of Kagoshima, was hammered by 6 PCs and will remain on patrol for all eternity.

The DD Nestor hit a mine near Lautem. The Allied TF then encountered a ML and hit it with 2 torpedoes and a shell causing it to sink. Still not done they found another ML and pounded it with many shell hits, sinking it. The game was just on as they then encountered 10 APs. 1 was sunk, 2 very heavily damaged and another 3 were also damaged. A DD was hit by a shell and lots of Japanese troops were observed jumping into the water. The airfield was bombed after the sun came up by 23 X B-24D and the flak knocked 1 out of the sky and damaged 10 others. The base had light damage, a large secondary explosion was reported and troop losses were light. Then 2 Japanese APs, 12 miles N of Lautem, were attacked by 6 X B-25J, 2 X Kittyhawk III, 5 X P-40N and 5 X P-38J. No damage was done to either side. Another Japanese TF was attacked by 121 X B-25J, 10 X Kittyhawk III, 8 X P-40N and 15 X P-38J. Of the 9 APs 5 were hit, 3 heavily. Troops were reportedly going into the water. No Allied planes were damaged. Later another attack was made by 94 X B-25J, 3 X Kittyhawk III, 11 X P-40N and 29 X P-38J. 4 APs were repeatedly hit and 3 were burning. A large number of men were observed jumping into the water.

The SS Bluefish, 102 miles E of Hamamatsu, caught a lone AK and hit it with a torpedo causing a fire.

The SS Flier, 17 miles W of Talasea, tried and failed to attack an AK due to the escort not presenting an opening.

The 35th Brigade, 88 miles NW of Rangoon, was bombed by 64 X B-25J, 26 X Thunderbolt II and 6 X Spitfire VIII. 3 Mitchells and a Thunderbolt were damaged as the Japanese unit had heavy losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had light casualties from 9 marauding Bettys.

Saipan was raided by 53 X SBD, 32 X TBF and 9 X F6F. AA fire destroyed a SBD (8 damaged) and a TBF (9 damaged). The airfield was lightly damaged, as was the port. There were more than a few secondary explosions and troops had heavy losses.

Tinian was targeted by 59 X SBD, 9 X TBF, 36 X TBM and 15 X F6F. A SBD and a TBF were damaged by ground fire. The airfield and port were both lightly damaged, there were a few secondary explosions and troop casualties were listed as light.

Guam was hit by 86 X SBD, 30 X SB2C, 81 X TBF, 68 X TBM, 15 X F4F-4 and 66 X F6F. 5 X SBD, 1 SB2C, 9 X TBF and 5 X TBM were damaged and a lone TBF went down as they inflicted moderate damage to the airfield and port. There were many secondary explosions and ground personnel sustained light losses. Ed's Old Gals joined in the fun and pasted Guam doing moderate damage to the airfield and port. There were a large number of secondary explosions and the troops were thought to have sustained extremely heavy casualties. The next segment of the Old Gals then stepped up to the plate and unleashed additional moderate damage to the airfield and port. Again there were numerous secondary explosions and the troops had very heavy losses.

Troops are scheduled to land on Guam tomorrow.

The Allied troops continue to move forward in Burma, careful not to let the Japanese get in behind them.

Sam and the rest of the 25th Division are awaiting their turn as Saipan is their target. The plan is for Guam and then Tinian and dependent on how those assaults go Saipan will be shelled and bombed prior to their attack. They might even get off of the ships to rest before the attack.

Pete stressed that a good radio operator is a valuable navigating tool. He asks his class why and after a couple of jokes one of the students says, “Because he can ride the beam.” Pete nods and says that the slightest mistake in dead reckoning can leave you far enough off course to cause a ditching. “Islands are tiny dots on the map and easy to miss when your flying so always utilize any tools at your disposal. If you are supposed to follow another plane, still do your own navigation. Laziness can cost lives.” With that Pete dismisses the class and heads back to the hotel. He accompanied by a few of the students who are looking for a beer.

“According to this article our pilots are doing much better against the Japanese,” Dave says. “Lots of new types of planes and plenty of them too. Maybe this war will end one of these days and Bill will stop by.” Sandy tells him that if he doesn't she'll find him and drag him back.

US troops were thrown back on the Rapido River.

The Red Army took Novgorod.

700 RAF bombers hit Berlin.

Combat

American DDs attacked an IJN sub about 14 miles NE of Guam scoring many hits and sinking it. Almost in the same location a sub tried to attack one of Ed's bombardment TFs, but failed, as it was driven off by the aggressive escorts.

Guam was again bombarded by the USN and it caused light damage to the airfield, moderate damage to the port, a couple of secondary explosions and heavy casualties. American troops began their landings under the cover of this bombardment and their casualties were very heavy. The Navy threw 92 X SBD (2 damaged), 30 X SB2C, 70 X TBF (2 damaged), 58 X TBM (3 damaged), 9 X F4F-4, 2 X FM-2 and 109 X F6F at the island's defenses. The airfield was moderately damaged, as was the port. The were some secondary explosions and troop losses were light. Tomorrow a general assault is scheduled.

Saipan was attacked by 52 X SBD, 28 X TBF, 32 X F4F-4, 9 X FM-2 and 66 X F6F. The Japanese challenged them with 73 X Zeke, 42 George and 30 X Jack. The Americans fought through the CAP and flak at a cost of 11 X SBD damaged, 4 X TBF damaged, 3 F4F-4 shot down (2 damaged), 3 X FM-2 splashed (1 damaged) and 21 X F6F downed (5 damaged). They took a fearsome toll on the defenders as 58 X Zeke went down, 43 X George were destroyed and 30 Jack were killed. The airfield took light damage as did the port, some secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were placed at heavy.

Tinian was raided by 63 X SBD, 51 X TBF, 34 X TBM and 12 X F6F. A lone Dauntless was damaged by the AA as they inflicted light damage on the airfield and port, some secondary explosions and light casualties.

Myitkyina was bombed by 115 X Liberator VI, 48 X B-24J, 9 X Spitfire VIII and 23 X P-38J. 3 Liberator VIs were damaged by flak. The base was very heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions and the troops sustained light casualties. Tomorrow troops are scheduled to hit the beaches and take the island.

Lautem was raided by 12 X B-24D, of which 6 were damaged by AA. Damage to the airfield was light as were the suspected troop losses. The main attack then appeared, consisting of 97 X B-25J, 10 X Kittyhawk III, 13 X P-40N, 43 X P-38J and 71 X P-47D. 2 Mitchells went down (52 damaged) and 5 Lightnings were also damaged by the ground fire as the port was moderately damaged. The were some secondary explosions and casualties among the personnel was placed at very heavy.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 9 Helens and had light losses.

The SS KIX, 11 miles NW of Kai Island, struck a ML with a fish.

Ed marvels at the explosions caused by his Old Gals, but he's learned that it looks more effective than it really is since the Japanese dig deep and surface when the shelling lifts. They suffer losses and disruption, but they do survive to fight. He is happy that there were no minefields to contend with.

Bill spends the day scanning the sky as the planes come and go in a never ending procession. He doesn't see how the Japanese can win the war or even the battle they're engaged in, given the awesome strength of the USN. Why do they fight on if the situation grows more hopeless day by day, he wonders.

Sam prepares his gear as his unit has been ordered to standby for boarding orders. He doesn't know that this depends on what happens at Guam and Tinian. His division could be used as a reserve to throw at either of these islands if all doesn't go as planned.

Elaine sits by the fireplace reading another letter from Gil. Her sister has one from their brother, who is now somewhere in Africa or Europe, who knows.

648 RAF bombers attacked Magdeburg at a cost of 55 bombers lost.

Combat

Allied troops continue unloading over beach at Guam, suffering light casualties. An ASW attack near Guam caused multiple hits to be claimed on a Japanese sub that had tried to penetrate the landing area's screen. Later a confirmed kill was awarded. What was presumed to have been another sub was driven off too. 83 X SBD (3 damaged), 30 X SB2C (1 damaged), 71 X TBF (3 destroyed and 9 damaged), 50 X TBM (4 damaged), 26 X F4F-4, 6 X FM-2 and 139 X F6F struck doing moderate damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, a few secondary explosions were seen and personnel losses were light. The Allied troops attacked and made good progress tearing into the Japanese defenses incurring heavy losses and dishing out heavy casualties.

A naval bombardment of Tinian caused light damage to the airfield, moderate damage to the port, a large number of secondary explosions and light troop losses. Another naval bombardment caused additional light damage to the airfield, moderate damage to the port, many more secondary explosions and light casualties. Troops started landing and had very heavy casualties. 58 X SBD, 54 X TBF (2 damaged) and 36 X TBM caused light damage to the airfield and to the port and caused many secondary explosions.

Saipan was bombed by 52 X SBD (8 damaged) and 35 TBF (6 damaged). They caused light damage to the airfield and port, some secondary explosions were seen, 2 X Zeke were trashed and casualties were heavy.

3 IJN PGs encountered a mine field at Tarakan.

An IJN ML, near Kai Island was attacked by 12 X B-25J, 9 X Kittyhawk III, 14 X P-40N and 39 X P-38J. The hapless ship was hammered by a large number of bomb and shell hits. The ships was observed to be sinking before the planes stopped their strafing runs.

Lautem was swept by 9 X Kittyhawk III and 30 X P-38J. They did light damage to the port and caused light troop losses.

The Allied troops in Burma continue to apply the pressure on the crumbling Japanese defense.

“Scuttlebutt has it that some island named Marina has been invaded. I think it's a snow job and until we get some more dope I'll just ignore it,” says Slim. The guys in the unit just continue going about whatever they were doing to kill time. Later Slim sees Gunny and asks him and Gunny tells him that he doesn't know, “But it ain't an island named Marina. It's a group of islands named the Marianas.”

Pete's class has a field exercise with a little problem for them to solve. They are going to be dropped off with a faulty compass, a map, some food and water and are expected to get back to base within a certain time frame. Pete knows that some of the guys will be in trouble while others should handle this easily. He tells Sylvia that Monday he'll be heading to the base early and will probably get home late, “Don't worry as I'm not going anywhere that I can't be back home in a jiffy.”

Ed is very pleased with the bombardments and especially the lack of minefields. No mines at Guam and Tinian, but how about Saipan, he wonders. He has a ringside seat to observe the planes doing their damage to the Japanese and they constantly come and go.

Allied troops were landed at Anzio.

Once more I find that apologies are in order.

My SSD has decided to go AWOL and I had no time yesterday to try and recover it. Of course my schedule won't allow me to take the time until much later today. I didn't backup and the latest entries for the AAR are only in very raw form on this laptop, while almost ready to go on the desktop.

I'll get to this ASAP.

Sorry.

Combat

The troops continue unloading over beach at Guam, and they take light casualties. A naval bombardment caused light damage to the airfield, light port damage, many secondary explosions and very heavy casualties to the Japanese troops. The troops continued their attack and further reduced the Japanese defensive works while inflicting very heavy losses on the defenders. The attackers sustained light losses.

Tinian underwent a naval bombardment that resulted in light damage to the airfield and port, some secondary explosions and light troop losses. Another naval bombardment contributed similar results. 3 X Frances were destroyed by the CAP of 28 X F6F patrolling over the island to protect the unloading ships. Then 5 X Lily appeared and they ran into 19 X F4F-4 and 28 X F6F. This resulted in all of the Japanese planes going down as a careless Hellcat pilot had his plane damaged. Another raid, this time made up of 9 X Lily was decimated by 19 X F4F-4 and 33 X F6F. 3 Wildcats and a Hellcat were damaged in the lopsided fight. Still not done, the Japanese threw 7 X Frances to the wolves as they were all destroyed by 19 X F4F-4 (3 damaged) and 38 X F6F (2 damaged). An IJN sub tried to attack the MSWs, but failed. For the sub's efforts the MSWs attacked it and claimed many hits. The Allied troops attacked and drove the Japanese troops out of their positions into a small pocket. The base is now in Allied hands. Japanese casualties were very heavy and the Americans sustained light losses. The MSW Lark, while searching for mines was struck by a torpedo.

The SS Dorado, 83 miles SE of Amani, attacked an AK. The explosion of the torpedo caused a fire to erupt.

The SS Porpoise, 22 miles E of Kendari, stalked and attacked a lone AP. The victim was struck by 2 fish and troops were seen leaping into the water as the ship went under.

Myitkyina was bombed by 122 X Liberator VI (4 damaged), 46 X B24-J (2 damaged), 9 X Spitfire VIII and 23 X P-38J. The base took extremely heavy damage, many secondary explosions and troop casualties were light.

12 X B-24D hit Lautem and 8 of them were damaged by the AA fire. The airfield was barely scratched, though there was a large secondary explosion seen and troop losses were heavy.

The IJA 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade, NE of Rangoon, was pounced on by 35 X B-25J, 7 X Spitfire VIII, 60 X Thunderbolt II and 24 X P-38J. Flak damaged 13 Mitchells, 3 of the Thunderbolts and 3 of the Lightnings. The unit sustained very heavy casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was again visited by 9 Helens and the unit had light losses.

The TF that the O'Bannon is screening has been ordered to proceed to Tinian and commence unloading immediately upon arrival. Phil is concerned as there have been air and sub attacks in that area. His crew will have to be on their toes.

“Why me? I know nothing about medicine,” says Gil who is visibly upset. He doesn't want the responsibility for being the medic for the Lucky 11. Seeing as how there is no choice involved he resigns himself, reluctantly, to it. He tries to think of it as just another class to attend. He only half jokingly tells the guys that they had better not get hurt while on a mission.

Bill has decided that the surface fleet will only have 2 functions in the future and they will both be to protect the carriers. AA support and ASW will be their roles with the remote chance of being needed for a shore bombardment or surface fight. Even the later will be for the protection of the carriers. He decides that if he's going to stay in the Navy then he'd better earn his wings or else consider subs and that won't do.

Sandy got a letter today from a neighbor who had gone into town and dropped it off for her. She sees the date and wonders where the others are. She's still very happy to finally get a letter from Bill, no matter how old it is.

Combat

Allied troops continue unloading over beach at Guam, sustaining light casualties. An ASW attack by USN DDs caused suspected heavy damage to the sub. Another attack on the same sub (suspected) was made by the escort of one of the bombardment TFs inflicting more hits. A naval bombardment caused light damage to the airfield and fort, caused many secondary explosions and heavy troop losses. 143 X SBD (2 damaged), 28 X SB2C, 135 X TBF (2 damaged), 104 X TBM (2 damaged), 16 X F4F-4, 6 X FM-2 and 112 X F6F then attacked. The airfield was moderately damaged and the port took light damage while there were many secondary explosions cheered by the ground troops. Japanese troop losses were light. Another naval bombardment resulted in additional moderate damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, some secondary explosions and light casualties to the personnel. Yet another naval bombardment contributed similar results. With all of this mayhem the troops were continuing their attack and they took the base, forcing the Japanese into a corner of the island. Japanese losses were heavy as were the casualties to the Americans. Later in the day a kill was awarded for a sub.

At Tinian the Allied troops continued to attack the stubborn Japanese troops, inflicting very heavy casualties to virtually none of their own. The Japanese are now surrounded, but continue to fight on.

Saipan was raided by 53 X SBD and 41 X TBF, of which 1 SBD was destroyed (6 damaged) and 6 TBFs were also damaged. The airfield and port were lightly damaged, many secondary explosions were reported, a Lily and a Frances were trashed on the ground and ground troops had heavy losses.

An ASW attack 17 miles E of Guam by the convoy escorts hit the sub with many depth charges and a kill was confirmed.

The 35th Brigade, NE of Rangoon, was bombed and strafed by 52 X Thunderbolt II, 20 X P-38J and 17 X Spitfire VIII. A Thunderbolt was shot down and 2 others were damaged and 2 Lightnings were also hit by the AA. The Japanese unit had heavy losses.

The Hopei Militia Division was struck by 12 Helens who caused very light casualties.

The SS Redfin continues her struggle for survival, with each passing hour bringing her closer to Darwin and safety. The problem is keeping the water level from rising any further and to do that the pumps must not quit again.

Ed's Old Gals position themselves to intercept what appears to be a Japanese surface fleet approaching the Marianas from Truk. In the meantime convoys move to or are in the process of unloading at Guam and Tinian. The remaining ships move to the NE under the cover of the CVs who also are supplying CAPs for Guam and Tinian. The Sea Bees have their work cut out for them to repair the bases so that they may be turned against the Japanese on Saipan and the surrounding area as soon as possible, or quicker.

FDR was given the news that Guam is firmly in American hands and that brings a smile to his face. A telephone call from Mr. Churchill is answered and the President is told that the CW troops are now advancing on Myitkyina and after dealing with blocking forces will attempt to take the base there.

Ed sits in his cabin with a mug of coffee pondering the prospects of his ships in a surface action. This is what he has always wanted in his career, a strong fleet to fight the enemy with. His only concern is that most of the ammunition carried by his TF is HE, not AP. The hell with it, he thinks, all that means is that we'll have to be accurate.

Gil sat through his first class and now he wonders what will happen if he gets sick at a man shredded by bullets or shrapnel. What happens if I puke, he wonders. I guess I'd better learn as much as I can and then do as good as I can as the rest of the Lucky 11 will be counting on me. He starts to write to Elaine and as he's writing he tells her how he wants to attend a university and become a history teacher.

Pete sits with some of the staff at the school as the students are doing their field problem. One of the instructors says, “The ones that pass this won't get washed out. All of the others will be assigned to other things.”

Sam is fighting the fear of the return to combat. He knows that Eniwetok was a cakewalk compared to what lies ahead. A call for NCOs is passed and this snaps him back to the here and now. “We have orders to standby to board ships so make sure everybody's gear is in shape. The boarding order will be given very soon, be ready,” with that the CO smiles and says, “Dismissed.” Sam thinks, oh no here we go again.

Hitler ordered that the Gustav Line be held at all costs.

Today FDR created the War Refugee Board.

Combat

SS Darter, 227 miles SE of Okinawa, underwent an ASW attack that she merely dove under to escape.

A night time surface engagement near Guam between 2 BBs, a CA and 3 DDs for the Japanese and 2 BBs, a CA and 5 DDs for the USN witnessed the IJN lose a DD and have another one heavily damaged. A BB on both sides was also damaged. Not long after the battle broke off the 2 sides engaged again and the Japanese lost another DD while both BBs were hit repeatedly. The CA was pounded and is ablaze while the remaining DD was also hit. The BB Idaho is on fire and heavily damaged and 3 of the DDs were also hit. The IJN then ran into 4 DDs and a BB, the CA and DD all were hit by guns and a torpedo each. The USN had a DD get hit by gunfire twice and it is burning. As the Japanese looked to break off the action the American ships attacked again and hit the other BB with a fish and their guns raked all of the Japanese ships while 2 of them were hit by guns. On Guam a Banzai charge was made and they suffered very heavy losses to no American troops getting hurt. The Allied troops then attacked and inflicted moderate losses on the Japanese at a cost of very light casualties to themselves. The Japanese are now surrounded in a very small pocket.

Myitkyina was pounded by 115 X Liberator VI (3 damaged), 42 X B-24J (1 damaged), 9 X Spitfire VIII and 25 X P-38J. The base was very heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were light.

84 X SBD, 18 X TBF, 35 X TBM, 17 X F4F-4, 6 X FM-2 and 116 X F6F attacked the IJN TF 21 miles SW of Pagan, which was under a CAP of 64 Zekes. All of the Zekes were destroyed and the Americans had 5 X SBD shot down (13 damaged), a TBF was splashed (15 damaged), 6 X TBM were destroyed (23 damaged), 3 X F4F-4 were downed (1 damaged) and 23 F6F went down (10 damaged). The Japanese ships sustained:

CV Taiho 2 bomb hits
CV Kaga 7 bomb hits 7 on fire, heavy damage
BB Kongo 9 bomb hits on fire
CV Akagi 2 bomb hits, 2 torpedo hits, on fire
CV Unryu 1 bomb hit, on fire

A short time later another strike of 25 X SBD and 16 X TBF arrived and the AA downed 2 SBDs (8 damaged) and 11 TBFs were also damaged. The Japanese suffered:

BB Kongo 4 bomb hits, on fire

In the meantime the Japanese struck at the USN TF 17 miles SE of Tinian with 19 X Judy, 25 X Betty, 42 X Frances and 2 X George. 3 Judys were damaged, 3 Bettys were damaged and 10 Frances were also damaged by the AA fire as the BB Idaho was hit by 4 torpedoes. She is heavily damaged and burning. Another 19 Judys appeared and 2 were damaged as they hit the DD Brown with 5 bombs, doing horrible damage and setting the tin can ablaze. Later the BB and DD both were no more.

6 X Betty, 11 X Zeke, 21 X George and 7 X Jack attacked the USN TF 20 miles SW of Saipan and were met by 24 F4F-4, 8 X FM-2 and 183 X F6F. All of the Bettys, all of the Zekes, 20 of the Georges and all of the Jacks went down at the cost of 2 F6F destroyed and 2 others damaged. Then 36 X Judy, 30 X Jill and 17 X Zeke showed up only to be met by 15 X F4F-4, 4 X FM-2 and 89 X F6F. 34 Judys, all of the Jills and all of the Zekes went down. The Americans had 3 Hellcats destroyed and 6 more damaged. In their persistence the Japanese then threw 17 Judys and 3 Zekes into the fray and 24 F4F-4, 8 FM-2 and 178 F6F went to work. All of the Japanese planes were lost and a Hellcat was damaged. Still trying to get to the American ships 17 Jills and 4 Zekes came in only to be met by 24 F4F-4s, 8 FM-2s and 175 Hellcats. A Hellcat went down and another was damaged as all of the Japanese died for their Emperor. Then 17 Judys, 12 Jills and 7 Zekes tried and failed as a lone Judy escaped being shot down by the 24 F4F-4s, 8 FM-2s and 179 F6Fs. No American planes were scratched in the lopsided battle.

About 84 miles SW of Myitkyina the CW troops attacked and forced the Japanese to retreat with extremely heavy losses while the Allied troops had heavy casualties. The Japanese had just advanced into the area and no sooner had they made contact when the hammer fell. Now the Allied troops will try to continue their move on Myitkyina.

The IJN BBs Mutsu and Yamato are believed to have been seriously damaged in the action around Guam, but the major effort will be to bag the IJN CVs to the north.

Bill watched on the radar screen the incoming Japanese air raids and observed the fighters of the CAP that moved to intercept them. What was amazing was the effectiveness of the CAP as the lookouts never even spotted a Japanese plane. The outgoing raids were quite large and they circled overhead while forming up, which was a sight to see. Yep, he thinks, there's no doubt about it, I've got to get into flight school.

Sam climbs the gangplank onto the ship all the time thinking of it as a sardine can. The men descend to their cramped quarters, barely able to walk between the rows of cots. “At least this time around we don't have to share our bunks,” a man says. It's true that the 25th Division has loaded onto enough ships as to reduce the crowding this time around. Sam is great full for this and the men say that the brass probably wants to reduce the fatigue before throwing them into the fray. An enlisted man has the right to complain from a higher authority and it's always exercised freely.

The convoy carrying the Flying Deuces is almost to Guam and the men can't wait to get operational so close to the Japanese. Stick just knows that he's finally going to see air to air combat as Saipan, Pagan, Palau, Yap and Ulithi are all Japanese bases close to Guam.

Sandy got 3 more letters today and she eagerly shares the little news Bills tells in them with Dave at dinner.

Hans Frank, Gauleiter of Poland, writes in his diary that out of 2.5 million Jews under his jurisdiction there are only 1,000 left.

Combat

The SS Flounder, 72 miles SE of Guam, found an IJN CA believed to have been the Furutaka and hit her with 2 torpedoes causing heavy damage and fires.

The IJN lost a DD in a night time surface engagement near Guam. It is thought that this ship was trying to pick up survivors from yesterday's actions as there can be no other explanation for her being there by herself. Ed is pleased with his Old Gals and their performance of late.

The SS Dorado, 81 miles E of Kagoshima, was attacked by 3 Japanese PCs, a PG and an MSW. She was unharmed and easily made good her escape.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was again bombed by 9 Helens and casualties were light.

The IJN TF 231 miles N of Pagan was attacked by 64 SBDs, 15 SB2Cs, 34 TBFs, 30 TBMs and 34 Hellcats drove off the lone Zeke in the area. The AA fire from the ships damaged 4 SBDs, destroyed a SB2C (4 damaged), damaged 14 TBFs and downed 3 TBMs (15 damaged). The American planes did their deadly work and managing to do the following:
CV Unryu 4 bomb hits 4, 3 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage
CV Taiho 10 bomb hits 10, 1 torpedo hit, on fire
BB Kongo 2 bomb hits, on fire
CV Akagi 4 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage

Then another attack of 12 SBDs (2 damaged), 15 TBFs (1 splashed and 8 damaged) and 6 Hellcats added to the score:
CV Taiho 4 bomb hits, a torpedo hit, on fire, heavy damage
CV Unryu a torpedo hit, on fire, heavy damage

Still not done another strike bored in on the Japanese ships. 19 SBDs, 15 SB2Cs, 44 TBFs, 9 Wildcats and 19 Hellcats went to work at the cost of a SBD and an Avenger downed plus another Avenger damaged. The fighters accounted for the lone Zeke that was still hanging around.
BB Kongo 1 bomb hit, 1 torpedo hit, on fire
CV Akagi 6 bomb hits, a torpedo hit, on fire, heavy damage
CV Unryu 3 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
CL Nagara 2 bomb hits, on fire

Then an additional 17 SBDs targeted the BB Kongo and hit her with 2 more bombs.

The Japanese ships near Rangoon were bombed and strafed by 14 X Thunderbolt II. An AK was raked heavily by the strafing runs, though the bombs all missed. Then 26 X B-25J and 2 X Thunderbolt II came in and another AK was hit by about 6 bombs, leaving her heavily damaged and burning. She was later reported to have been sunk. Rangoon's port was bombed by 46 X B-25J (2 damaged), 28 X Thunderbolt II (6 damaged) and 20 X P-38J (3 damaged). The damage to the target was light, there were many secondary explosions and personnel losses were heavy.

An air attack on the Japanese ship 68 miles SE of Guam was made by 58 X SBD, 72 X TBF, 53 X TBM, 16 X F4F-4, 6 X FM-2 and 34 X F6F. The target was believed to have been the CA Furutaka and a lone bomb hit was scored on the already battered vessel. 8 X TBM then tried their hand, but failed to hit the target. Another 9 TBFs and 8 Hellcats attacked and they too failed to get a hit.

The USN TF 29 miles NW of Pagan was attacked by 10 Judys and 6 Jills, but the CAP of 12 F4F-4s and 84 F6Fs downed all of them excepting a lone Judy that hightailed it out of the area after dropping her ordinance harmlessly in the water to lighten herself.

Saipan was attacked by 53 X SBD, 77 X TBF, 58 X TBM and 9 F6F. There were no Japanese planes aloft, but the flak accounted for a downed SBD (10 damaged), 12 TBFs and 8 TBMs were also damaged. The airfield was lightly damaged, the port took moderate damage, there were many secondary explosions and 2 Bettys, a Frances, 3 Judys, a Dinah, a Jack and a George were destroyed on the ground.

The SS Porpoise, 20 miles E of Butung Island, attacked 5 IJN tin cans, but failed to hit them.

Later in the evening reports filtered in that the IJN CVs Akagi and Unryu and the CA Furutaka were no more.

The SS Redfin nears Darwin and the flooding is at the point where any worse and they'll lose the boat.

In Burma the Allied troops are keeping after the retreating Japanese. The problem is that of supply and they will be relying on captured Japanese food to keep their bellies full until a port, such as Rangoon falls.

The Flying Deuces and their brand new F4U-1D Corsairs are on Guam. The mechanics are busily putting the planes into flyable condition. Stick can't wait to get into action. In the meantime they have been ordered to stay at the airfield as it's possible that there could still be stray Japanese soldiers around. Stick watches the Sea Bees turn ruins into a fully functional base as if it was magic. Not only that, but they are expanding the facilities far beyond anything Stick has seen this side of Pearl Harbor.

Ed's notes contain praise for the performance of the ships under his command as they've conducted bombardments, engaged in naval combat and come through it all ready for more. He thinks that an old salt like himself has done well and that all the years he's spent in the Navy served him well in preparing him for this.

No letters today, but Sandy is OK with that even though she'd prefer to get some.

Gil spent some time getting a bit of gunnery training today. “I guess I'm like everybody else and would like to shoot down a Jap plane,” he says to his instructor. The man agrees with that assessment and reminds him to lead his target.

A Dauntless spotted the CV Taiho 290 miles NW of Pagan and reported that Taiho was hit.

The SS Herring, 12 miles NE of Wengchow, torpedoed a TK causing heavy damage and fires. She then underwent an attack by the escort.

Japanese ships popped up in the middle of the night 78 miles NW of Pagan. The IJN force of 2 CAs and 5 DDs engaged the USN's 2 CVs, a CVL, a BB, 2 CAs, a CLAA, a CL and 6 DDs. In a violent exchange of gunfire and torpedoes both sides suffered.
CA Atago 4 shell hits
CA Mikuma 6 shell hits
DD Kishinami 3 shell hits
DD Hatsukaze 2 shell hits, 2 torpedo hits and is sunk
DD Natsushio 2 shell hits
DD Yukikaze 20 shell hits and is sunk
DD Hayashio 15 shell hits 15 and is sunk

CV Essex 5 shell hits, 2 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage
CV Franklin
CVL Monterey
BB Alabama 12 shell hits
CA Salt Lake City 24 shell hits, 2 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage
CA Minneapolis 6 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
CLAA San Diego 1 shell hit
CL Montpelier
DD Ammen
DD Charles Ausburne
DD Beale
DD Bell
DD Burns 9 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Caperton 4 shell hits, 2 torpedo hits, and is sunk

Within 18 hours the Salt Lake City, the Essex and the Burns all had to be scuttled. Their crews were taken off in good order. A shock wave now ripples through the fleet.

Rangoon's port was raided by 28 X B-24J (9 damaged). Damage was light to the installation, a couple of fuel tanks were seen to have exploded and casualties were light.

Myitkyina was hit by 124 X Liberator VI, 7 X Spitfire VIII and 29 X P-38J. 3 bombers were damaged by the AA fire while they dumped their loads. The base was very heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were light.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 12 Helens for no losses.

The IJN TF 295 miles NW of Pagan was attacked by 91 X SBD, 49 X TBF, 9 X TBM, 10 X F4F-4 and 54 X F6. No planes were damage and the CV Taiho was struck by 5 bombs and a torpedo. The attacking pilots reported that the CV was sinking rapidly.

Saipan was hit by 34 X SBD, 76 X TBF, 52 X TBM and 16 X F6F. The flak damaged 7 SBDs, 9 TBFs and 8 TBMs while the airfield and port were lightly damaged, a couple of fuel tanks exploded, there were a few secondary explosions, a Betty was burning at her revetment and casualties to the troops were heavy.

The Redfin tied up at a dock in Darwin and drew a crowd of amazed onlookers. She's been beaten and battered, but her crew brought her in to safety.

FDR listens to the narrative and he crumples the report in his hand. “How did this happen? We were led to believe that radar gave us such a huge advantage and now this? Admiral according to these reports a clearly inferior force tore apart our ships. What were they doing? How could they not have been spotted? I want an investigation made and I want steps taken to prevent this from happening again in the future.”

Ed sits in his cabin, stunned at the news. This is horrible and he wonders how the hell such a thing could happen. He knows that somebody's head will roll for this and the TF commander is ultimately responsible for what happens to his ships.

Bill is informed by Jeff and the 2 men just stare silently at each other. This news with run through the fleet in no time and morale is sure to suffer. After a few minutes of silence Jeff says, “Damned war, when will it end?” Then he leaves Bill's cabin. Bill sits silently at his desk and almost automatically starts writing a letter to Sandy. The only difference is that this one will never get sent because what he writes will never get past the censors.

Elaine got 2 letters from Gil today and she reads them on the streetcar as she goes home. The man sitting next to her asks if it's from her sweetheart and if he's in the military. She's about to answer him when she sees that he only has 1 arm and scars on his face. She composes herself and then says, “Yes, he's in the Army Air Corps flying bombers.” The man smiles and says that so was he, served on bombers too. She says goodbye and gets off at the next stop and walks the remaining distance home. She can't remember ever having been so rattled in her life. Could that happen to Gil?

The Germans counterattacked the French at Cassino.

After 900 days the blockade of Lenningrad has been lifted.

The Russians cut off 60,000 Germans in the Korsun Pocket.

Von Kuchle ordered the 18th Army back to the Luga River.

Holy ---!! An at-sea intercept?? And did all the Alabama's shells miss? I would have expected to see considerably more damage if 16-inchers had found their targets.

You would've thought that the outgunned Japanese shouldn't have done so well, but there were a surface combat force and the other air combat. I don't remember who I had commanding, but whoever it was it was his air skills and caution that got him the job, not naval skills (probably nothing higher than 50).

The SS Herring, 16 miles N of Taipei, found a lone AP and put a pair of torpedoes into it. Soldiers were seen jumping from the burning vessel before it went under.

An Allied bombardment attack 74 miles south of Myitkyina caused light Japanese casualties.

The Marianas area was quiet for the first time in a long time as both sides brace for whatever comes next. The men on Guam and Tinian know that they will either fight against a Japanese attempt to retake the islands or they'll be hitting Saipan. Only a lucky few units will pull garrison duty when the next round of the Allied offensive comes.

The 25th Infantry Division is loaded and underway. They haven't the slightest idea where this island named Guam is, but that doesn't matter because they know that it's already been secured. Sam still has that horrible feeling that it won't be long and they'll be thrown at the Japs again.

Stick's plane will be ready to fly tomorrow. His buddies are already contributing to the CAP being flown over Guam now. The Japanese haven't tried to attack them yet and Stick hopes that they wait until tomorrow when he'll be joining the active list of his squadron.

Slim got a letter today from Joe Orsini's mother. She thanks him for his more than kind words about Joe and she apologizes that it took her so long to reply. She explains that the pain of losing her son prevented her from writing sooner. “Can you believe Joe's mom apologizing to me for not writing?” he says. One of the guys asks “Who is Joe?” The vets of the platoon who hear this just give the guy a cold stare until Slim answers, “He was a great guy and a buddy that you could count on in a jam until the Japs got him. We got you as his replacement so we kind of lost out 2 times.” The replacements will need to do well in the 2nd Marine Division's next action before they will be accepted by the vets.

The last of the men staggered in in the early morning hours yesterday, meaning they all passed. Pete is proud of them and they tell him that he inspired them to keep going no matter how they felt.

The newspaper has news of the great victories over the Japanese with the fall of Guam and Tinian and of the great naval battles that have taken place over the past few days, all victories. “BS!,” declares Dave, “You can't win battles without paying the piper and according to this crap they make it sound as if nobody on our side was even hurt.” He picks up his mug of coffee and reads on.

Several German divisions were surrounded in the Cherkassy area.

The United States and Great Britain announced an oil embargo on Spain because Franco was assisting Germany. By May the embargo will be lifted as Spanish troops in Russia go home and no more war materials are shipped to Germany by Spain.

Combat

The SS Gunnel, 16 miles N of Vigan, underwent and attack by 3 MSWs that caused no damage.

Marcus Island was raided by 47 X PB4Y of which flak damaged 12. The airfield had light damage, there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were light.

Saipan was attacked by 30 SBDs, 77 TBFs, 51 TBMs and 15 Hellcats. A Dauntless was shot down (3 damaged), 5 TBFs were killed (6 damaged) and 2 TBMs were damaged. The airfield and port were lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions, 2 X Francis were torched and personnel took light casualties.

Ground combat 74 miles S of Myitkyina saw the Allies attack the Japanese and force them to retreat towards Myitkyina with extremely heavy losses. The Allied force had very heavy casualties.

The men and material continue to pour ashore at Guam. These are the troops tabbed for the invasion of Saipan. The USN will slowly send ships back to Pearl for refits as the LBA strength grows in the Marianas.

Gil is watching a film about how to treat various wounds. It's in color and some of the students have left the room because they are getting sick. The film is pretty gruesome, but Gil figures he owes it to his crew to learn as much as he can. If I feel queasy from this how will I do with the real thing? He tries to push these thoughts from his head and focuses on what the narrator is saying about putting the sulfur in the wound, applying the compression bandage and if needed administering morphine. Then the film moves on to a section about severed arteries and Gil starts to pray that he's never confronted with these problems.

Pete attends the meeting and the students say their farewells to him and again express their thanks. He thinks that his class wasn't about navigation, but rather the installation of a don't give up attitude. Pretty smart those higher ups, he thinks. The next class won't be starting for some time yet so he can enjoy his tea and Sylvia's company more often.

Dave listens to the radio and the news is all about the stunning US victories over the Japanese in the Marianas. “You'd think that if we really did so good the war will end soon,” he says to Sandy. She is reading a letter from Bill and absently nods.

FDR asks his military advisers if plans are moving ahead for the invasion of the Philippines and Okinawa. The answer is affirmative, but until a green light is given nothing else will be done. He then asks if more troops and supplies can be pushed forward in the event these operations are approved. Again the answer is that it's already planned for.
