Combat

In a night time surface combat battle near Guam the Japanese had the misfortune to run into a TF just arriving. The baptism of fire for this USN force was costly for the IJN.

Japanese Ships
CA Tone 4 shell hits
CA Maya 6 shell hits, 1 torpedo hit, on fire, heavy damage
DD Akizuki 2 shell hits
DD Naganami 39 shell hits 39, and is sunk
DD Arare
DD Kasumi 2 shell hits, on fire
DD Mutsuki 11 shell hits, 1 torpedo hit, and is sunk
DD Uzuki 13 shell hits, 1 torpedo hits, and is sunk

Allied Ships
BB Iowa 4 shell hits
BB New Jersey
CL Nashville
CL Birmingham
DD Capps
DD Hall
DD Halligan
DD Hopewell
DD Marshall
DD Owen

A second round happened when the Americans chased the retiring Japanese and laid into them again.

Japanese Ships
CA Tone 12 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
CA Maya 15 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Akizuki 58 shell hits, and is sunk
DD Arare 31 shell hits, and is sunk
DD Kasumi 26 shell hits, and is sunk

Allied Ships
BB Iowa
BB New Jersey
CL Nashville
CL Birmingham
DD Capps 2 shell hits
DD Hall
DD Halligan

The USN was still not done as the blood lust ran high. In a way this was payback for the losses suffered a few days ago.

Japanese Ships
CA Tone 38 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
CA Maya 20 shell hits, and is sunk

Allied Ships
BB Iowa 1 shell hit
BB New Jersey
CL Nashville
CL Birmingham 1 shell hit
DD Capps
DD Hall
DD Halligan
DD Hopewell
DD Marshall
DD Owen

Still not willing to let any ship escape the American TF threw more at the only target left to them.

Japanese Ships
CA Tone 2 shell hits, and is sunk

The CL Birmingham has light systems damage and a small fire burning, but other than that there is nothing worse than scratched paint on any of the victorious ships. The 2 new BBs have acquitted themselves well.

The SS Dorado, 81 miles SE of Kagoshima, attacked 6 PCs, hitting 1 of them with 2 fish sinking it. The sub has light systems damage and will head back home for repairs.

Rangoon 's port was attacked by 38 X B-24J and the flak knocked 1 down and damaged 10 more as they did light damage to the port, spotted some secondary explosions and inflicted heavy losses on the troops.

Myitkyina was bombed by 119 X Liberator VI, 9 X Spitfire VIII and 26 X P-38J. AA fire accounted for the loss of a bomber and 2 others damaged. The base was very heavily damaged, there were a couple of secondary explosions and the troops had light casualties.

Lautem was swept by 64 X P-47D and they were met by 2 Zekes, a George and a Jack. All of the Japanese planes were destroyed at no cost to the American fighters. The American pilots love their Jugs and the Japanese are learning to fear them.

Saipan was hit by 31 SBDs, 7 TBFs, 19 TBMs, 9 F4U-1s and F4U-1Ds. A Dauntless went down (3 damaged), 3 TBFs were damaged and a TBM was splashed (6 damaged). The airfield and port were lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were reported, a Frances was destroyed on the ground and troop losses were light. This marked the first combat for the Flying Deuces. Then 64 X TBF (2 downed 8 damaged), 31 X TBM (1 killed 6 damaged) and 8 X F6F attacked and they added light damage to the port and light troops losses.

The SS Herring, 14 miles N of Taipei, attacked a heavily escorted AK and hit the target with 2 torpedoes causing fires and heavy damage. After reloading she finished her prey off with 3 more fish.

Ed speaks to the skippers of the ships under his command and they discuss the soon to be launched operation against Saipan. “No mine fields have been detected, but there are many more defenders there than Guam and Tinian combined. Our job, as usual, will be to destroy as much as we can and kill some of the Japanese too. We'll be making many runs at Saipan and not all of the ships will go on each one. Questions?” The captains look around and shake their heads and small talk breaks out.

Stick is overjoyed that he was able to be in on a real combat mission today. He's disappointed that the Japanese had no planes to fight, but escorting the ground attack planes offers an interesting show. The secret is not to get distracted as enemy planes could always show up. That night he writes a letter to his parents telling them how much he loves flying and he's considering making a career out of Marines.

Gil is relaxing and talking about the class and the movie they showed. The guys listen and they talk about the planes flies so high and fast that they'll be in and out before anybody can hurt them. “Well maybe,” says Landy, the right gunner. The fact that the planes have been rushed into production has brought many problems along with it. It's cutting edge technology, but the engine fires have been traced to magnesium used to save weight. That's just one of many bugs. “Maybe,” Landy continues, “The war will be over before we ship out.” The guys moan and throw stuff at him. Gil is more apprehensive as it dawns on him that people are going to die.

Elaine writes to Gil telling him that there's been a snow and that it looked beautiful, but by morning it was black from the soot produced by the steel mills. She also makes mention that she misses him.

Yesterday 800 USAAF bombers hit Frankfurt and Ludwigshafen while the RAF raided Berlin.

Combat

Rangoon's airfield was bombed by 24 X B-24J, of which AA fire damaged 8. The strip was lightly damaged, there were a few secondary explosions and the ground personnel had heavy casualties. The Japanese shipping was attacked by 27 X B-25J. They came in very low, strafing an AK and repeatedly hitting it with bombs, leaving it a blazing hulk that sank almost immediately. The another 34 Mitchells showed up and though the flak destroyed 3 and damaged 24 of them they delivered light damage to the port.

Myitkyina was targeted by 105 Liberator VIs, 9 Spitfire VIIIs and 30 P-38Js. A bomber was damaged by ground fire as the base was heavily damaged. There were a few secondary explosions and the troops had light losses.

Lautem was swept by 24 X P-40N, but the Japanese offered no opposition. The fighters loitered a short time and then returned to base.

The SS Raton, 11 miles SW of Tawi Tawi, tried to attack a TK, but the escorts detected and then drove her off.

The Lucky 11 flew a training mission today that went off perfectly. Gil had to simulate casualties being treated and they “wounded” played their parts well, moaning and groaning. The others were laughing as Gil tagged them. Once they landed ambulances were on hand to remove the “wounded”. A doctor was there to oversee the unloading of the men and he examined their tags before letting them go with the rest of the crew. “You did well son,” the doctor said to Gil, “But what I want to know is why the one who was seriously injured was tagged, but no morphine was given to him?” Gil explained that the guy in question was a pain in the butt about the drill and complained to much. “So I made him lie on the steel deck, stay still and told him that I was not giving him morphine until he shut up.” The doc laughed and left.

Pete and Sylvia sit together at a table in the pub having some tea, talking about the future. She wants to give their child everything she never had and wonders if they should move to the United States. Pete says, “Move? Why? I love it here. The people are so friendly and we have the hotel. What more could we want for a child's future or ours for that matter?” Besides you'd be breaking your parent”s hearts if you left them.” She agrees and told him that she was just wondering and wanted to know how he felt.

The US 34th Division crossed the Rapido River.

Combat

In the predawn hours the SS Darter, 221 miles SE of Hong Kong, came across a lone AP that appeared to be loaded with troops. She made a surface attack and hit the ship with a torpedo and scored 5 times with the deck gun. The soldiers were seen jumping off of the burning vessel.

The SS Gabilan, 77 miles S of Kagoshima, spotted 2 PGs and 4 PCs who were unaware of her presence. Though she tried the Galiban couldn't manage to get in an attack.

The SS Swordfish, 11 miles S Tawi Tawi, was attacked by a PC and MSW who failed to damage the sub. Then the sub discovered what the Japanese were trying to protect and she hit the TK with 2 torpedoes causing heavy damage and fires to break out.

Myitkyina was attacked by 109 X Liberator VI, 9 X Spitfire VIII and 29 X P-38J. No planes were hit by the light and inaccurate AA fire. The base was heavily damaged and personnel sustained light losses.

Lautem was bombed by 144 X B-24D and 94 X B-24J. Flak damaged 10 X B-24D and 12 X B-24J. The airfield was subjected to extremely heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions and the troops had very heavy casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 12 Helens and had very light losses.

28 Thunderbolt IIs came in low over Rangoon's harbor and attacked an AK there, hitting it with a few bombs and murderous strafing. The ship was listing and on fire when the aircraft left. No Allied planes were damaged in the attack. Then 20 X B-25J and 2 X Thunderbolt II appeared and the strafed and bombed the doomed ship, hitting it many times with bombs casing it's demise. In the afternoon 15 Thunderbolt IIs appeared and attacked another AK, hitting it with a couple of bombs and a heavy dose of .50 cal.

Saipan was attacked by 39 X P-39D and 12 X F4U-1. AA destroyed 2 Airacobras and damaged 8 others. The airfield was lightly damaged and a Frances was left burning. Then 10 SBDs and 8 Corsairs arrived and the flak damaged 4 of the Dauntlesses as their attack inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese troops.

The SS Parche, 49 miles SE of Butung Island, was forced to dive deep by 4 DDs. Thanks to her radar detecting the Japanese ships early enough she made good her escape, unharmed.

Stick is still keeping an eye out towards his first encounter with the enemy. “I suppose that with these new birds we'll be used in a support role before we see any air combat,” says the squadron exec when Stick asked about intel. He's not exactly pleased with this news, but he knows that sooner or later the Japanese will have to come out and fight. “It seems that the Navy fly boys are decimating the Japs in the air and leaving nothing for us. When they do launch an attack it's on the fleet, not a base. Maybe we'll get pushed up to another base soon and then we'll see. Sorry Stick, you're not alone in wanting to knock down some enemy planes.” With that the exec goes back to completing a duty roster for tomorrow. Stick leaves disappointed.

Ed's Old Gals are replenished and awaiting orders to hit Saipan. The inactivity is getting to everybody. This is better than some office in the Pentagon, he reminds himself. That seems so long ago and his thoughts turn to wondering about Bill. Whenever he tries to contact him the Helena is out somewhere with the carriers.

Elaine looks out of her window to see more snow falling. She thinks that with tomorrow being Groundhog Day it's going to be another 6 weeks of winter. She sighs and walks downstairs to the kitchen to help prepare lunch. Her father is reading the Pittsburgh Press about the upcoming Spring Training that will open soon.

The SS Snapper, 17 miles SW Jesselton, tried to attack a TK escorted by 3 MSWs, but failed to gain a favorable position from which to launch her fish.

The SS Parche, 81 miles SE of Kendari, was attacked by 5 DDs, but managed to give them the slip before they could inflict any damage.

Myitkyina was hit by 114 X Liberator VI, 9 X Spitfire VIII and 28 X P-38J. 4 bombers were damaged by ground fire as they inflicted heavy damage on the base, witnessed many secondary explosions and the ground personnel had very light losses.

Lautem's port was attacked by 138 X B-25J and 24 X Kittyhawk III. AA brought down 4 bombers and damaged 22 more. The port was lightly damaged, but there were a great number of secondary explosions and the troop losses were placed at moderately light.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, still about 22 miles S of Sining, was raided by 12 X Helen and the Chinese casualties were reported as light.

A Japanese AK 85 miles S of Rangoon was attacked by 21 X P-38J and the vessel was struck by 8 bombs and took a brutally heavy strafing. She was listing and ablaze when the planes retired.

Saipan's airfield was struck by 48 X P-39D and 12 X F4U-1. Flak damaged 11 P-39Ds as they did light damage to their target. Then 20 SBDs, a Hellcat and 9 F4U-1s roared in and the AA fire claimed a dive bomber and damaged 6 more. Ground troops had light losses in the attack.

Ground combat about 28 miles from Myitkyina witnessed an Allied attack on the disorganized Japanese forcing them to retreat yet again towards Myitkyina with extremely heavy losses. The Allied troops sustained very heavy casualties.

Allied pressure in Burma continues to grow as more units are being funneled forward and the air attacks continue to grow in ferocity.

In the Pentagon a discussion is closing. The topic was the usage of American bombers based at Soviet installations. “So until this point we have refrained from attacking any shipping in the Kuriles, but the recommendation is to hit the next convoy. This needs to be taken to the highest levels because our Russian hosts are still playing neutral with the Japanese. I'll have to pass it upstairs and see if they'll approve this and then it'll go to the White House,” the general closes the meeting and returns to his office and call an orderly.

Flying CAP over Guam is keeping the Flying Deuces on their toes as the Japanese still hold bases in the are. They are disappointed that the Navy is getting to dish out all of the offensive punishment and they hope to get in on it soon. Stick was talking with one or the armorers about just what his plane is capable of carrying in the way of weaponry and he's impressed. When he shares this with some of the other pilots they want to load up and pay Saipan a visit.

Sam watches more ships disgorging the tools of war and is amazed at how much stuff is arriving. The Sea Bees are working their magic expanding the air and port facilities with a lesser effort going into fortifications. He realizes that there seems to be an upswing in the tempo of things since he first went to the New Hebrides. He prays that Saipan will be given a huge helping of bombings and shelling before he's got to land there.

Sandy has spent the day helping Dave shovel snow from the roof of the house as he was concerned about the weight of it all. When they're done she announces that she's going to make some coffee and he thanks her. As she looks out of the kitchen window she thinks of how beautiful the snow looks. Everything is tranquil and it's hard to believe that the world is locked in a brutal struggle that is shattering so many lives. She says a silent prayer for it all to end and for Bill's safe return.

Combat

The SS Shad, 83 miles SE of Kagoshima, underwent a rough time at the hands of 5 PCs. She will now make for port as the systems have been moderately damaged and there is moderate flooding. The report to base anticipates that survival is not in doubt.

The SS Finback, 16 miles SW of Buka, located an AP escorted by 3 PGs. She got herself into position and let fly with a spread of 4 torpedoes, of which 2 hit the AP. The ship was burning and heavily damaged with soldiers seen jumping overboard before the ship went under. She continued her patrol by loitering in the area and was rewarded by spotting an AK with 3 PGs screening it. While they were busy fishing men out of the water the sub scored a hit with a fish and troops were diving overboard to escape the fires.

An ASW attack 329 miles SE of Midway against an IJN sub was executed in defense of a convoy. Many hits were claimed and at worst the sub was driven off before an attack could be made.

Once again Myitkyina was targeted by 114 Liberator VIs, 38 B-24Js, 8 Spitfire VIIIs and 24 P-38Js. The flak was very light, sporadic and inaccurate as no planes were damaged. The base was very heavily damaged, there were a few secondary explosions and troop losses were thought to have been light.

Lautem was raided by 9 X B-25J and 16 X Kittyhawk III. 7 bombers were damaged by the AA as they did light damage to the port.

Saipan was pounded by 57 B-25Js, 7 F4U-1s and 3 P-47Ds. Ground fire claimed 2 Mitchells and 13 damaged while the airfield was moderately damaged, a few secondary explosions were claimed, 2 X Frances and a Dinah were destroyed and troop losses were placed at light. A short while later 12 X SBD, 41 X P-39D and 10 X F4U-1 attacked. The flak damaged 5 SBDs and 8 Airacobras. Additional light damage was done to the airfield and a large secondary explosion was seen. Another attack followed and it was made up of 13 SBDs and 2 P-47Ds. A Dauntless was shot down and 4 others were damaged by the AA. Light damage was done to the airfield and there were very few casualties among the troops. The USN then threw it's planes into the fray as 52 SBDs, 40 TBFs and 15 Hellcats arrived over the beleaguered island. Flak damaged 9 SBDs and splashed a TBF (9 damaged). The airfield and port were lightly damaged, a lone secondary explosion was seen, a Frances and a Judy were destroyed and the personnel had light casualties.

Jaluit's port was struck by 51 X B-25J and 44 X P-38J. No planes were hurt as the port was lightly damaged.

Gili Gili was raided by 91 X B-17E and the CAP of 13 X Zeke, 6 X Jack and 25 X Tony tore into them. 5 Flying Forts were shot down and 11 others were damaged and the Japanese lost a Zeke (8 damaged) and a Jack (2 damaged). There was no damage done to the airfield, though a large secondary explosion was noted. The accuracy of the bombers was compromised by the extremely high altitude that they attacked from.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was bombed by 9 Helens and the attackers dumped their loads off the mark.

The CA Minneapolis will arrive at Wake Island where work will commence immediately on temporary repairs so she may sail for Pearl Harbor.

The Chinese have disposed of their plans to attack in the south of China as recon showed a large Japanese troop concentration there. The formations have reversed the direction of their march.

Slim wrote a letter to Orsini's mother telling her that she had nothing to apologize to anybody for concerning her son. He went on to tell her that Joe is sorely missed by the guys and that he will never forget him. Writing this letter was one of the toughest things that he ever did, but he felt that he had to do it. He was asked by one of the guys if he wanted to mail it and Slim said, “No, not yet. I want to look it over again before sending it off. Thanks anyway.”

“Damn it all to hell,” exclaims Stick, “Why do the Navy and Army pilots get in on all the action while we just pull CAP? I'm getting tired of flying racetrack patterns in the sky trying to stay alert. Aren't we here to fight a war? When do we get into the thick of things?” The other pilots agree, but nobody in the squadron has any answers for these questions.

FDR listens to advice being given concerning using of aircraft for offensive purposes, both pros and cons. Finally he lifts his hand signaling an end to the arguments and says, “Gentlemen we're engaged in a struggle against the Japanese that can not be won if we tie our hands behind our backs. The next time a convoy tries for Paramushiro Jima let our patrol bombers have at them.” The men look at one another and Roosevelt continues, “Turn 'em loose. In the meantime I will consult with Stalin and let him know of my decision. He can always use deniabilty with the Japanese if they discover where our planes operated out of.” With that the meeting ends and FDR is wheeled out of the Oval Office and to his bedroom. It's been another of an endless stream of long and stressful days and nights that are taking their toll on his fragile health.

“Did you hear that the groundhog says it's shadow? We're in for more winter,” says Elaine's friend. Elaine looks at the dirty snow on the ground and thinks of what an ugly world this can be. She wonders where Gil is and how he's doing. Her friend snaps her back to the here and now with, “I can't wait for spring.”

The attempted breakout from Anzio ended after a 3 mile advance over 3 days. The Germans have now started with counterattacks.

Myitkyina was bombed by 102 X Liberator VI, 37 X B-24J, 8 X Spitfire VIII and 25 X P-38J. No Allied planes were damaged in the attack as the flak was very light an wildly inaccurate. The base was extremely heavily damaged, there was a lone secondary explosion and troop losses were light.

Saipan was attacked by 17 X B-25J and 2 X P-47D. 9 bombers were damaged by the AA as they inflicted light damage to the airfield and caused light casualties to the personnel. Then 8 SBDs, 42 X Airacobras and 15 Corsairs showed up and 2 P-39Ds were shot down (6 damaged). The airfield was lightly damaged, a large secondary explosion was reported and troop losses were very light. Another raid of 60 X SBD, 35 X TBF, 5 X P-47D, 19 X F4F-4 and 10 X F4U-1 rolled in and a Dauntless was splashed (6 damaged) and a TBF was downed (5 damaged). The airfield and port were lightly damaged, a huge explosion of a fuel tank was observed, a Frances was destroyed and troop losses were light.

Jaluit's port was hit by 36 X B-25J and 44 X P-38J. No planes were damaged and the port was moderately damaged.

Tavoy was the target for 36 X B-25J and 24 X P-38J. A CAP of 29 X George met them and the fight was on as 7 George's bit the dust (5 damaged) and the Allies lost 2 Mitchells (1 damaged and a Lightning went down (1 damaged). Not a single bomb found the target.

The Flying Deuces have now gotten all of their new planes up and running. The squadron's only pilot with a kill so far is 2LT Glass, but they hope the Japanese throw some planes their way. Glass was on CAP when an unlucky Japanese patrol plane ran out of clouds to hide in. Stick officially has 2 combat missions under his belt and is scheduled for CAP tomorrow.

Red and Cookie relax and talk about postwar plans as Lucky gnaws away on a bone. “You know all we're going to hear all night is the dog turning the bone and it thumping on the deck,” says Cookie. Red agrees and adds that at least they're not at sea to draw unwanted attention to themselves. It's amazing at how quiet a crew can be for an extended period of time if they think the enemy is around. Some of the new crew members grilled Red about when his ship was sunk and they left horrified at the thought of subs.

The Lucky 11 have been informed that their training regimen will now be accelerated. They look at one another and Gil breaks the silence by asking, “Who wants to help me out here? I need to practice on sticking a needle into a vein in case somebody needs plasma.” The guys look around and they all murmur excuses and leave Gil sitting by himself. When he relates this to his instructor later it draws a laugh and Gil is told that it's a normal reaction.

The Germans attacked to relieve the Korsun Pocket.

Myitkyina was the target for 116 X Liberator VI, 38 X B-24J and 7 X Spitfire VIII. The ground fire was almost nonexistent and no planes were damaged. The base had extremely heavy damage, there were a great number of secondary explosions and the personnel had light casualties. Elements of the 33rd Division were attacked by 14 X B-25J and 9 X P-38J. No planes were damaged and the Japanese unit sustained light casualties.

Kai Island was swept by 71 P-47Ds and the Japanese offered no opposition so the Jugs retired.

Jaluit had moderate damage to it's port and light casualties from a raid made up of 44 B-25Js and 45 P-38Js. No planes were damaged.

The 30th Division, about 79 miles north of Rangoon, was hit by 28 X Thunderbolt II and 10 X Spitfire VIII for light casualties. 2 Thunderbolts were shot down and 7 others were damaged.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, still stuck in place, was hit for light losses by 9 Helens.

Saipan's morning was shattered by the arrival of 8 X SBD, 40 X P-39D and 15 X F4U-1. AA fire was moderate and accurate as 2 SBDs and 7 Airacobras were damaged. The airfield was lightly damaged. Shortly afterwards the Americans threw 118 X SBD (1 downed, 10 damaged), 28 X SB2C (3 damaged), 174 X TBF (1 destroyed, 12 damaged), 49 X TBM (4 splashed, 3 damaged), 14 X F6F and 3 X P-47D at the island's defenders. The airfield was moderately damaged as was the port, there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were very heavy.

The Allied troops have arrived at Myitkyina and will commence with a bombardment attack tomorrow. The armor and infantry formations will get a little rest from the march and recent battles before called on for an assault.

Japanese troops have moved towards the Allied blocking force and combat looks to be in order. Meanwhile another Allied division is moving on the location and it is hoped that the Japanese will be repulsed and that Pagan and Mandalay will remain secure.

US troops reached the outskirts of Casino and then were repulsed.

Combat

The naval bombardment of Saipan commenced at dawn and the coastal batteries answered, hitting the DDs Beale with 8 shells causing fires and the Charles Ausburne with 11 inflicting heavy damage and fires. They will be attended to at Guam before being sent off for major repairs. The CL Nashville sustained 8 shell hits setting a small fire that will be extinguished by tomorrow, latest. The airfield was lightly damaged, a large secondary explosion was observed and troop losses were very heavy. 45 X B-25, 8 X F4U-1 and 3 X P-47D rolled in on the airfield adding additional light damage, a large secondary explosion and light troop losses.

The SS Flier, 23 miles NW of Rabaul, was attacked by 5 PGs that were escorting the AP the sub was stalking. No damage was done to the Flier.

Myitkyina was targeted by 103 X Liberator VI, 37 X B-24J and 10 X Spitfire VIII. No Allied planes were damaged as the flak was light and inaccurate. The base was very heavily damaged, some secondary explosions occurred and there were negligible troop casualties. The Allied artillery bombardment went off as scheduled, but it was suspected that the Japanese had no casualties.

Kai Island was bombed by 135 X B-25J, 24 X Kittyhawk III and 46 X P-47D. 18 bombers were damaged by ground fire and the airfield took light damage, many secondary explosions and light losses to the personnel.

Dili was swept by 44 X P-38J and they met with no opposition. Then 119 X B-24D and 71 X B-24J appeared and the light AA fire damaged 2 of each type of bomber. The airfield was heavily damaged, a great number of secondary explosions were seen, 4 X Zeke and 9 X Frances were charred wrecks and the troops had heavy losses.

Jaluit's port was attacked by 55 X B-25J and 46 X P-38J for light damage and some secondary explosions.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 29 miles SE of Pagan was bombed and strafed by 28 X Thunderbolt II and 10 X Spitfire VIII. 4 Thunderbolts were damaged and the LCU took moderate casualties. The next wave of planes, 15 X B-25J, 34 X Corsair IV, 9 X Spitfire VIII, 22 X Thunderbolt II and 21 X P-38J, attacked the IJA 30th Division. Ground fire destroyed a Mitchell (13 damaged), 3 Corsair IVs were damaged and 2 Lightnings were also damaged. The Japanese unit sustained heavy casualties. The Japanese troops then attacked the Allies, who repulsed them with extremely heavy losses. The Allied troops had heavy losses in the battle.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 9 Helens and neither side had any losses.

The men of Sam's squad are on edge. Some of them are scared to have to make a return to combat and the waiting is driving all of them nuts. Sam wishes that there was something to tell them to make them feel better, but what and how? He's talking a couple of the guys and asks,” Are you scared?” They answer, “Nah.” He responds, “Well you should be, I am. I suppose once the shooting starts we won't have time to be scared and our training will carry us through it all.” They look at one another hoping that Sam is right. Nobody wants to fail and let his pals down when they need him the most. Sam hopes that the pasting being delivered to Saipan will make it easier for when they get there.

Stick is enjoying flying again, but these CAPs are so boring. Where the hell are the Japs, he wonders. How can an entire squadron have 1 lousy kill to it's credit? I'm good at burning gas, but how about the real thing?

Sandy got a few letters today and if this means anything based on the past many more are in the pipeline. Bill tells of his loneliness as how much he misses their hikes in the mountains. The sunsets here are spectacular and the sky at night is like nothing you could imagine, when the skies are clear at night and full of stars.

Gil is awakened from his sleep by an incoming message. When it's complete he takes it to Jake and he in turn orders a new course to the navigator. Willy says he'll get right on it and Gel says that fuel consumption will increase as they be flying into headwinds now. The crew is working together like a well oiled machine and Jake is pleased.

Combat

A naval bombardment of Saipan inflicted light damage to the airfield and light casualties while the coastal guns fired in return hitting the CL Mobile 11 times and the CA Portland once. Then the Allied aircraft went to work as 48 X P-39D, 10 X SBD and 11 X F4U-1 paid the airfield a visit doing light damage and inflicting very light troop losses. The next wave of planes was comprised of 127 SBDs, 30 SB2Cs, 173 TBFs, 44 TBMs, 6 F4F-4s, 14 F6Fs, 15 F4U-1s and 3 P-47Ds they hit the island's defenses and did moderate damage to the airfield and light damage to the port. There were many secondary explosions, a Frances was destroyed and very heavy troop casualties were inflicted. 2 SBDs were shot down (6 damaged), 2 Helldivers were damaged, a TBF was splashed (9 damaged and 3 TBMs were damaged.

The SS Tuna, 78 miles E of Kenadari, slipped through a TK's escorts and placed 2 torpedoes into it's side. The tanker was burning with a heavy list to starboard and then disappeared beneath the boiling waters.

Myitkyina was attacked by 105 Liberator VIs, 40 B-24Js and 9 Spitfire VIIIs. No planes were damaged by the sporadic flak. The base was heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were placed at extremely light. The IJA 55th Division was bombed and strafed by 40 X P-38J and the unit had light casualties while all of the planes departed intact. Myitkyina was assaulted by the Allied troops and both sides had very heavy losses. The Japanese lost some ground, but overall their defenses are still intact.

Lunga's CAP of 20 Zekes, 39 Jacks and 6 Tonys greeted a fighter sweep of 24 P-38Js and shot down 6 of the Lightnings and damaged 3 others. The Japanese lost 4 Zekes, 6 Jacks (1 damaged) and 2 Tonys.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 29 miles SE of Pagan, was pounced on by 27 Thunderbolt IIs and 7 Spitfire VIIIs. 2 of the Thunderbolts were damaged by the ground fire while they dished out moderate losses to the Japanese. The the IJA 30th Division was struck by 30 X Corsair IV, 7 X Spitfire VIII, 25 X Thunderbolt II and 18 X P-38J. A lone Corsair was damaged by the AA as the Japanese suffered heavy casualties. The Japanese then bombarded the Allied troops with their artillery to no effect.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 12 Bettys and there were no losses.

The SS Gunnel, 23 miles E of Wenchow, hit a TK with 2 fish, sinking it, and then underwent a rough time of it as the 3 PCs attacked her.

Palawan has disgorged her cargo at Guam and to the crew's surprise they and the other smaller AKs have been detached from their convoy and they now remain at anchor while the rest of the empty ships prepare for departure. “So now here we are based out of another island. It seems that every time we move it gets more miles between us and Hawaii. Maybe this war will end sooner than we think,” says Red. Cookie just stares at the night sky without answering. “I don't suppose the shipping company has offices here, do they?” Cookie continues silently lost in thought and Red just lets it slide.

Sam sits by a tree listening to the birds singing. He marvels at how many birds live here and thinks that before the war came to Guam it must have been a nice place. 1 It's good to have something to take his mind of of reality as he absentmindedly continues to sharpen his bayonet.

Gunny and Slim sit together talking about this and that, having a smoke. Both of them know that they will be involved in combat again very soon. They don't discuss it and instead talk of the upcoming baseball season. “Is there anybody left with the teams or are they all pulling soft duty somewhere?” asks Slim. Gunny says he doesn't know, but he's heard that some of the ball players enlisted and are with combat units. Slim grunts and says, “Now that's good for my morale.”

The Lucky 11 were debriefed after landing this morning and were given a well done. The fuel was adequate to complete the mission which was a simulation to divert them on to a secondary target. Spending so many hours in the air might be routine for these B-29s, but for any other bomber it's unheard of.

The first operational “Schnorkel” U-boat arrived in the Atlantic.

The Germans started full scale attacks at Anzio.

Combat

The SS Robalo, 142 miles N Taipei, attacked 3 PCs and nailed 1 with 2 fish, sinking it.

The IJA 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade, 29 miles SE of Pagan, was attacked by 35 X Corsair IV, 9 X Spitfire VIII, 26 X Thunderbolt II and 17 X P-38J. A Corsair was destroyed (1 Damaged and a Thunderbolt went down (2 damaged). The Japanese had heavy casualties. Japanese artillery threw a barrage at the Allied troops, to no effect.

Saipan was attacked by 8 SBDs, 42 Airacobras and 12 Corsairs in the early morning. A Dauntless was shot down (2 damaged) and 3 P-39Ds were damaged. The airfield was lightly damaged, a secondary explosion was seen and losses to personnel was very light. Another raid of 19 SBDs and 5 Thunderbolts was next up and 6 of the dive bombers were damaged. The airfield was lightly damaged. Then it was the USN's turn and 105 X SBD (9 damaged), 30 X SB2C (1 destroyed, 1 damaged), 159 X TBF (2 downed, 11 damaged), 48 X TBM (1 splashed, 7 damaged) and 14 X F6F roared in. The airfield was heavily damaged and the port was moderately damaged. The were many secondary explosions and troop losses were very heavy.

Myitkyina was attacked again and the Allied troops found and exploited a seam in the defense. They captured the base, inflicting very heavy casualties on the Japanese while sustaining heavy losses themselves. The Allied commanders credit the armor for the rapid successes in Burma. One even was heard to say, “Like a hot knife through butter,” in reference to tanks cutting through the Japanese lines. There are still many Japanese troops in the area and they must be dealt with. Tonight into tomorrow there will be a large artillery bombardment while the tankers and infantry take a break. Some armored units will pull out of the line and advance towards Pagan.

With the capture of Myitkyina the supply situation for China will improve a little.

The RAF used the “Tall Boy” 12,000 pound bomb on the Gnome-ET-Rhone works in Limoges.

Overlord plans have been confirmed.

Japanese artillery continued to lob shells at the Allied troops who escaped suffering anything other than lost sleep and shattered nerves. For some reason the Allied guns didn't fire the ordered barrage.

The island's coastal batteries returned the fire and hit the BB Arizona with about 12 shells, causing some chipped paint that caught fire and will easily be extinguished. The island's airfield and port were lightly damaged, but personnel sustained extremely heavy casualties. Then it was time for the Allied planes to go to work and 34 X B-25J and 7 X P-47D dished out moderate damage to the airfield and light casualties as 11 Mitchells were damaged by flak. The next raid was comprised of 5 X SBD, 43 X P-39D and 10 X F4U-1. The flak damaged 3 SBDs and 8 Airacobras as they lightly damaged the airfield and inflicted negligible casualties on the ground personnel. Another strike arrived and the 23 SBDs, 11 Corsairs and 7 Thunderbolts added light damage to the airfield and very light troop losses. The Japanese still couldn't get out of their holes as 64 X TBF, 30 X TBM and 9 X F6F pounced on them. Flak downed a TBF (10 damaged) and a TBM (2 damaged) as the planes did light damage to the port. A large secondary explosion was seen and the troops had light losses.

Dili was bombed by 134 X B-24D and 95 X B-24J. One of the former and 5 of the later were damaged as they flattened the airfield, placing craters in the craters. There were numerous secondary explosions and troop losses were very heavy. 15 X Frances, 2 X Irving and a Zeke were destroyed on the ground.

Jaluit was raided by 51 B-25Js and 42 P-38Js. No planes were damaged and though the bombs fell off target a secondary explosion was reported.

Tulagi was hit by 44 X B-24J, 5 of which were damaged by AA. The port was lightly damaged, a secondary explosion was seen and troop casualties were very light.

The IJA 30th Division, 29 miles SE of Pagan was bombed and strafed by 41 X B-25J, 33 X Corsair IV, 18 X Spitfire VIII, 46 X Thunderbolt II and 19 X P-38J. 3 Corsairs, 3 Thunderbolts and 3 Mitchells were damaged by ground fire as the Japanese unit had very heavy losses.

The Allied troops at Myitkyina attacked the Japanese in the area and caused them to have extremely heavy casualties while they had very heavy losses themselves.

Combat

SS Darter, 24 miles W of Batan Island, came across an AK being escorted by a PC and 4 MSWs. With little difficulty she penetrated the screen and hit the AK with 2 torpedoes causing heavy damage and fires.

Kai Island 's airfield was attacked by 47 X B-25J, 12 X Kittyhawk III and 46 X P-38J. A B-25J was shot down (3 damaged) and a Lightning was destroyed (2 damaged) as the base was lightly damaged, a few secondary explosions were reported, a Betty was destroyed and personnel losses were light.

Dili was attacked by 130 B-24Ds and 68 B-24Js. The Japanese threw light and inaccurate AA fire at them and damaged 2 B-24Ds and 4 B-24Js. Extremely heavy damage was done to the airfield, there were many secondary explosions, 15 X Frances, 3 X Irving and a Zeke were destroyed on the ground while the troops had heavy casualties.

Saipan's port was struck by 99 X B-25J, 12 F4U-1 and 8 X P-47D. 18 of the bombers were damaged by flak and the base was lightly damaged though there were many secondary explosions. Troop losses were placed at light. Next came 5 SBDs (3 damaged), 39 Airacobras (2 downed, 7 damaged) and 11 Corsairs. The airfield was lightly damaged and there were light troop losses. A third strike came as 20 SBDs (7 damaged), 11 Corsairs and 6 Thunderbolts added light damage to the airfield and light casualties among the personnel. Then 60 TBFs (2 shot down, 5 damaged), 30 TBMs (2 splashed, 2 damaged) and 8 Hellcats added to the carnage as they did light damage to the port, reported some secondary explosions and added light troop losses,

Jaluit was raided by 54 X B-25J and 43 X P-38J who did no damage to the base, but did manage to trigger a couple of secondary explosions. No planes were damaged.

Port Moresby was attacked by 8 B-17Es and 24 Jacks (3 damaged), 41 Zekes (2 damaged), 18 Tojos (3 damaged) and 15 Tonys (1 damaged) went to work on them, downing all of the big bombers. The Flying Forts never got near the target and one has to wonder what happened to the other 88 planes assigned to the attack.

Tulagi was targeted by 37 X B-24J, of which flak claimed 1 destroyed and 5 damaged. The port was lightly damaged, there was a secondary explosion and the troops had light losses.

The IJA 6th Tank Regiment, 29 miles SE of Pagan, was attacked by 31 Corsair IVs (6 damaged), 15 X Spitfire VIIIs, 48 Thunderbolt IIs (4 damaged), 21 P-38Js (1 damaged) and 35 B-25-Js (1 destroyed, another damaged). The unit sustained heavy casualties and some tanks were destroyed.

Palau was raided by 110 SBDs, 15 SB2Cs, 100 TBFs, 18 TBMs and 14 F6Fs, 7 of the Dauntlesses, 6 TBFs and 3 TBMs were damaged by the AA fire. The airfield was moderately damaged as was the port, there was a great many secondary explosions and casualties were thought to have been heavy.

The Allied artillery shelled the Japanese in the Myitkyina area causing very light casualties.

Gil is continually chided by the guys in the crew about his medical knowledge. “So after the war you're going to go to college and then medical school, right?” asks Landy, the right gunner. Gil laughs and tells them he wants to go to college and become a history teacher, not a doctor. Brownie opens another beer and says that he hopes never to find out if Gil is any good at being a medic. Gil silently prays that he never finds out.

Sam watches as the engineers continue building up the airfield, port facilities and defenses on Guam. Somebody told him that the same thing is going on at Tinian too. “Where's that?” Sam asks and the guy rolls his eyes and laughs telling him it's the next island in this chain. All Sam really wants to know about is Saipan, what the Japanese have there and what kind of a pounding the planes and ships are giving it before he gets there.

From above the waters in the Marianas seem to be littered with shipping and Stick's job is to make sure that there are no unwelcome visitors. The CAPs are boring to fly just like all of the others that he's been on, but here there is an air of electricity. A major effort in this area is going on and he hopes to get some licks in too. After his flight is over he heads off to his tent to peel the sweaty flight suit off and then heads to the mess tent for something to eat. The hours for chow are flexible for the pilots as they are spending many hours in the air.

Elaine got 2 letters from Gil today and she's still miffed that she doesn't know where he is or what he's doing. “The war can't last forever so cheer up,” her sister tells her. Later they plan on going out to catch a movie. Sometimes it's hard to believe that there's really a war being fought as life manages to go on almost in a normal way at times.

The final defensive line at Anzio has been reached by the German attacks.

The German offensive is now 11 miles from the Korsun Pocket.

Combat

A naval bombardment of Saipan announced the start of a new day for the beleaguered defenders. Their dwindling coastal guns returned the fire hitting the BBs Colorado 7 times and Maryland 4 times. The bombardment dished out extremely heavy casualties to the troops on the island. Then the planes arrived as 45 X B-25J (17 damaged) and 7 X P-47D inflicted light damage to the airfield, a secondary explosion and light troop losses. More Allied aircraft appeared as 5 SBDs (2 damaged) and 9 F4U-1s added light damage to the airfield. Another group of planes followed. This package was comprised of 7 SBDs (2 damaged) and 5 Thunderbolts. Very light damage to the airfield was done. Then 55 TBFs (1 destroyed, 9 damaged), 26 TBMs (4 damaged) and 8 Hellcats hit the port lightly causing a couple of secondary explosions and moderate troop losses.

Kai Island was raided by 60 B-25Js (6 damaged), 12 Kittyhawk IIIs and 11 P-40Ns. The airfield was lightly damaged, there were many secondary explosions and personnel losses were heavy.

Jaluit was visited by 49 X B-25J and 42 X P-38J. No planes were damaged and the port was lightly damaged.

Tulagi was raided by 26 X B-24J and the port had light damage, a couple of secondary explosions were noted and extremely light casualties were inflicted by the untouched bombers.

The IJA 30th Division, 29 miles SE of Pagan was bombed and strafed by 26 Corsair IVs, 9 Spitfire VIIIs, 23 Thunderbolt IIs (3 damaged) and 18 P-38Js. Casualties were heavy for the Japanese. A Japanese artillery bombardment attack caused light Allied casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had moderate losses from an attack made by 6 Helens.

An Allied attack in the Myitkyina area inflicted extremely heavy casualties on the Japanese while they also had very heavy losses.

Ed is pleased by the performance of his Old Gals and the pounding they are giving Saipan, but he wishes that he could tell more exactly what they are accomplishing. “Are we pounding away at real targets or are we hitting sand and coral?” he asks an aide. “When those boys go ashore I want to know that we did the best we could and that it paved the way for them.”

Sam doesn't know what to do as everybody's weapons and gear have been checked and rechecked. When asked about what's next and when his reply was, “All we can do is wait and be ready to go.”

Stick can't get over the activity going on in the Marianas area. He has to admit that cruising around at high altitudes doesn't allow for much of a view, but when heading back to base it never fails to amaze him. On today's CAP they were vectored out to intercept bogies that turned out to be nothing at all. It was exciting while it lasted and then the disappointment took hold. He thought that they might have missed the inbound Japanese planes and almost panicked at the thought.

Today the Lucky 11 are heading out on a training mission that calls for them to conserve on fuel consumption and extend the distance they cover. Gil sits idly at his station and writes a letter to Elaine as the other guys try to find various ways to keep themselves occupied for the long hours they will spend in the air with nothing to do.

Luga fell to the Red Army today.

Combat

Saipan was once more subjected to a predawn naval bombardment and the island's defenders replied by hitting the BB Colorado 5 times. The airfield and port were lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions and troop losses were heavy. 110 X SBD (5 damaged), 27 X SB2C (1 damaged), 92 X TBF (4 damaged), 17 X TBM (1 damaged), 7 X P-47D and 17 X F4U-1 added their weight to the pummeling that Saipan was taking. They did moderate damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, caused some secondary explosions, destroyed a Frances and inflicted heavy casualties on the personnel.

The SS Flier, 79 miles SW of Rabaul, tracked a small convoy made up of 2 APs and 4 PCs. She penetrated the screen and hit an AP with a torpedo, setting it on fire. Then the flier dove deep to avoid detection and to reload her bow tubes.

Kai Island was attacked by 13 B-25Js, 8 Kittyhawk IIIs and 30 P-38Js. 3 of the bombers were damaged by flak as the airfield was very lightly damaged. A secondary explosion was seen and personnel losses were light.

Koepang was swept by 71 P-38Js and the Japanese gave battle with 23 Jacks, 20 Tojos and 13 Tonys. In the swirling fight the Americans lost 6 Lightnings and had 6 more suffer damage as they destroyed 11 Jacks (1 damaged), 13 Tojos and 9 Tonys.

Jaluit's port was hit by 45 B-25Js and 37 P-38Js for light damage and a couple of secondary explosions. No planes were damaged.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, 21 miles SE of Myitkyina, was attacked by 77 Liberator IVs and 7 Spitfire VIIIs. No planes were damaged and the Japanese had heavy casualties. Another strike made up of 32 X Liberator IV hit the IJA 2nd Tank Regiment a short distance away and inflicted very light losses on it. Again no planes were damaged.

The IJA 6th Tank Regiment, 29 miles SE of Pagan, was bombed and strafed by 58 X P-38J. A plane went down and 6 others were damaged as they caused moderate losses and killed some AFVs. At virtually the same time the IJA 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade, a short distance away, was pounded by 27 X Corsair IV (2 damaged), 15 X Spitfire VIII, 49 X Thunderbolt II (3 damaged), 17 X P-38J (1 damaged) and 56 X B-25J (3 damaged). The unit sustained very heavy casualties. A Japanese bombardment attack cased no Allied casualties. Allied artillery replied and inflicted light losses on the Japanese.

The Hopei Militia Division was visited by 9 Helens who departed intact after dumping their bombs harmlessly off target.

Lunga was swept by 20 X P-38J, 6 destroyed and 1 damaged, as the Japanese greeted them with 17 X Zeke, 33 X Jack and 3 X Tony. 3 Zekes and 5 Jacks were shot down. Then 22 X B-24J arrived and 3 were splashed and 8 more were damaged as they damaged 2 Jacks and a Tony. No bombs fell on target as the bombers turned away in the face of the fierce Japanese fighters.

At Myitkyina the Allied troops again attacked the Japanese inflicting very heavy losses and suffering heavy casualties of their own. As usual the Japanese troops, despite an increasingly impossible situation, continue to fight to the death with whatever means available to them. The Allied commanders decided early on in the planning stage that the Japanese would be chased, even into the jungles, rather than left to starve because of the penchant of giving their all for the emperor.

Another day another CAP mission and still no enemy planes in the skies that Stick patrols. “Surely I can't fly the entire war without so much as seeing some combat,” he says in the mess tent. His CO heard him and told him that soon enough his chance to hurt the Japanese would come, just maybe as ground attack instead. He then announced to the pilots there that they would start some training cycles for ground attack missions. “Flying in the dirt?” asks Stick.

Sam and his squad are on a patrol looking for the stray Japanese soldier when on of the guys taps him on the shoulder and points ahead and to the left. There is some brush and rocks there and the man says that he thought he saw some movement. Same tells the squad to split into 3 sections, leaving some of them to provide a base of fire should anything happen and the men move out, encircling the suspected position. Upon arrival at their objective they spot a dog with 5 puppies nesting. “There's your Japanese,” joke one of the guys as the men take a break. The dogs look a little worse for wear and they give the mother some scraps of food and water. “We could take a pup for a unit mascot,” suggests one of the men and they all agree. Which one though. One of the pups answers the question for them by walking over to Slim and then starts yelping. “Now we need a name for him,” the man says. “How about Frank, after our President?” They all agree and take Frank with them as they continue their patrol. “Hey!” the guy carrying Frank says, “This isn't a Frank, she's a Frankie!” They laugh and continue on their way.

Sandy's eye catches a story on the front page of the newspaper that Dave is reading and she silently waits for him to finish with it before getting her chance to read it. The story tells of the huge operations in and around the Marianas area and the sea battles that have taken place in the air, on the seas and on the islands themselves. She wonders if Bill is there and how he is doing.

The Allied troops halted the German attack at Cassino.

Last night my phone system, internet connection, etc. got fried by a lightning hit. This is the third time in 6 1/2 years and no matter what precautions I take nothing ecept being unplugged works. This is being sent from a local wifi so needless to say the AAR is on hold until I get things sorted out and this being Brazil it could take a while.

Combat

The SS Flier, 15 miles from Rabaul, found an AP escorted by 4 PCs. She got herself into position and let fly with a spread of fish. 2 of the torpedoes slammed into the target, setting it ablaze and doing horrific damage. The sub made good her escape without being detected and resumed her patrol after watching the AP sink.

Another naval bombardment of Saipan at the hands of Ed's Old Gals did almost nothing to the shattered island. The BB Colorado was hit once by a coastal gun. Then Ed's TF underwent an air attack by 3 X Frances. 6 Hellcats, 3 Corsairs and 2 Thunderbolts nailed the Japanese planes at the cost of a damaged Hellcat. The planes aren't from Saipan so Allied commanders will need to address this issue. It is believed that they came from the Bonin Group.

16 P-38Js swept Lunga and 21 Zekes, 17 Jacks and 4 Tonys engaged them. A Zeke was shot down, 2 Jacks were splashed and a Tony went down in the fight as the Americans lost 4 planes and had 3 others damaged.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 29 miles SE of Pagan was bombed and strafed by 48 Lightnings. The unit sustained moderate casualties and the American had a plane destroyed and 4 others damaged. The the IJA 30th Division was hit by 29 X Corsair IV, 19 X Spitfire VIII, 45 X Thunderbolt II (4 damaged), 17 X P-38J (1 damaged) and 24 X B-25J (2 damaged). The Japanese had moderate casualties. Japanese artillery inflicted light casualties on the Allied troops. Allied artillery responded and also dished out light losses on the enemy.

21 miles SE of Myitkyina the 18th Aviation Rgt was attacked by 30 X Liberator VI and the Japanese had heavy losses. Then 73 Liberator VIs and 9 Spitfire VIIIs attacked the 121st IJA Base Force inflicting very heavy losses on the unit.

Another Allied attack at Myitkyina saw both sides have heavy losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was struck by 9 Helens and suffered light losses.

Gil is feeling lonely and depressed today. It's Valentine's Day and for the first time in his life he has a girl that he really cares for and who cares for him and they are so far apart. To make matters worse there is nothing scheduled for today so he's able to stew in this feeling. Some of the guys are taking the day to relax and they're joking around, but Gil is silently composing a letter to Elaine.

Sandy absently goes about the daily routine of preparing meals, cleaning, etc. but her mind is on Bill. Her feelings are compounded by the fact of it being a special day today for couples and they are separated by so many thousands of miles.

Sam and his squad are as ready as they'll ever be for the invasion of Saipan. They figure that maybe they'll get lucky and it'll go as planned and then they'll get lots of time to rest. If they knew that the Army already has included them in it's plans for the invasion of another island a few months from now they'd be horrified. The Army plans are predicated on the defenses of Saipan being overwhelmed by superior firepower and the sheer weight of numbers. Of course if things don't go as planned the 25th Division will need time to rebuild and another division will replace it or the schedule will be pushed back.

Stick has seen nose art on the bombers and the small Japanese flags on the fighters indicating kills and he's jealous. He still figures that his time will come and that he's as ready for anything as he'll ever be. The CAP missions will soon be giving way to escort and ground attack soon enough, if he's to believe what he's been told by the squadron exec. All he can do is wait and eventually the Japanese will have to fight, even if this means he'll be flying over Tokyo.

Eisenhower set up SHAEF HQs in Britain.

Combat

An Ann attacked the SS Robalo 23 miles E of Takao, hitting it. The sub has light systems damage and will make for a port to effect repairs.

The SS Gabilan, 158 miles S of Nagasaki, tried to work her way into a position to attack an AK being escorted by a PC and 4 MSWs. She was detected and attacked.

Jaluit was raided by 45 B-25Js and 33 P-38Js. No planes were damaged as they moderately damaged the port and triggered a secondary explosion.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 29 miles SE of Pagan, was bombed and strafed by 49 P-38Js. 7 planes were damaged and the unit had moderate losses. An artillery exchange saw the Allies have very light casualties and the Japanese had light losses.

The IJA 55th Division, in the Myitkyina area, was targeted by 63 X Liberator IV, 20 C B-24J and 9 X Spitfire VIII. No planes were damaged and the Japanese had light casualties. Then elements of the IJA 33rd Division were hit by 32 Liberator IVs and 15 B-24Js. No planes were hit and the Japanese had heavy losses. An Allied artillery barrage inflicted light losses on the Japanese.

The Hopei Militia Division was struck by 9 Helens for extremely light losses.

Saipan was attacked by 52 SBDs (1 shot down, 4 damaged), 112 TBFs (2 destroyed, 14 damaged) and 27 TBMs (3 damaged). The airfield and the port were lightly damaged and a couple of secondary explosions were seen while troop losses were heavy.

6 B-24Js appeared over Lunga and 4 were damaged by 27 Zekes, 13 Jacks and 3 Tonys (2 damaged). The bombers fled, dumping their bombs harmlessly over the water. An investigation will be conducted as to why so few of these planes flew out of a group of 48 aircraft, of which 6 were under repair.

The Palawan starts to load supplies for the invasion of Saipan. Guam is a beehive of activity as now that the harbor facilities have been expanded and the troops rested the next phase of the Marianas campaign swings into action.

Red watches the Palawan's crew struggling with the cargo nets and then down into the hold they go. He has not so fond memories of the oven like holds and the strenuous work. He also remembers a broken bone. He likes working the radio and he strolls over to where Cookie and Lucky are. “I'm glad not to be a deckhand anymore,” Red says and Cookie looks at him smiling. Beneath the surface all of the men are edgy as being on the front lines is not their cup of tea.

Stick passes over the port and notices that the ships are loading. He climbs to the patrol altitude staying in his position in the flight. What was once something that wasn't so easy to do is now second nature to him.

Gil checks the group's training schedule and sees that the Lucky 11 has a flight tomorrow. It appears that most of the crews are scheduled also. This ought to be interesting, he thinks. When they hold the briefing we'll know all about it. Until then he goes off in search of any mail that might have arrived.

Pete will have another class starting soon and he tells Sylvia. She responds with, “After the Valentine's Day gift that you gave me I just might let you do whatever you want.” The laugh, hug and kiss. The gift was some chocolate, which she adores.

The heaviest air raid to date was made on Berlin.

Monte Cassino was devastated by a bombing attack.

Hitler allowed troops to fall back to the Panther Line and the Korsun Pocket defenders to breakout.

The SS Balao, 84 miles S of Tori Shima, spotted a lone AP and in the predawn darkness hit the target 6 times with the deck gun and 3 fish. The ravaged vessel was sinking and Japanese soldiers were seen jumping into the water.

Saipan woke up to a naval bombardment that caused light casualties. Then the American aircraft came. 99 X B-25J (12 damaged), 9 X F4U-1 and 15 X P-47D hit the port for light damage, some secondary explosions and moderate troop losses. Then the IJA 3rd Division was pounced on by 65 X P-39D (2 downed, 6 damaged) and 10 X F4U-1. The Japanese had light losses. Another strike of 11 SBDs (7 damaged) and 15 F4U-1s hit the airfield for light damage. Then the sky was full of American planes as 136 SBDs (1 shot down, 6 damaged), 31 SB2Cs (2 damaged), 151 TBFs (1 downed, 5 damaged), 40 TBMs (1 damaged), 18 Thunderbolts and 14 Corsairs were next up. The airfield and port were moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions and ground personnel lost heavily.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 29 miles SE of Pagan, was attacked by 37 X B-25J (1 lost, 5 damaged), 31 X Corsair IV (1 damaged), 9 X Spitfire VIII and 24 X P-38J (1 damaged). The Japanese sustained heavy casualties. A Japanese artillery bombardment caused light Allied losses and the Allied reply inflicted similar losses on the Japanese.

An attack on the IJA 55th Division, near Myitkyina by 98 X Liberator VI, 38 X B-24J and 8 Spitfire VIII resulted in heavy Japanese losses and all of the planes retired undamaged. Allied artillery caused light Japanese losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was struck by 12 Helens for light casualties.

Tomorrow the ships bearing the assault troops will depart from Guam, bound for Saipan. Ed's Old Gals will leave Guam tomorrow morning after having replenished. The air attacks will now concentrate on the troops as the airfield and port have long since ceased to exist in other than crater form.

Sam sits on his bunk silently praying that he won't let anybody down when they hit Saipan. As usual below decks stinks on the transport.. A new guy in the squad has been very quiet and he's continually sharpening his bayonet. Sam watches him for a while and then goes over and asks, “How're ya doing?” The man says OK without ever looking up. Sam says that he'll see him later and leaves. The guy gives me the Willies, he thinks to himself.

At the briefing they're told that it's a maximum effort raid on a target many miles away. It's expected that they keep a tight formation in and out and that it's entirely possible that the primary target will be socked in. With that they leave and the men joke about bombing Salt Lake City. Gil will be busily making sure that they ride the beacon for the return trip, but until then he'll be catching Zs.

Red and Cookie are in awe of all the shipping in sight. “How can anything move without hitting another vessel?” Red wonders aloud.

Stalin has informed FDR that Soviet troops will be redeploying in preparation of assaults on Japanese positions. These attacks will only be made once the Americans move on Shikka. FDR is less than pleased with this and was heard to say that the damned Russians are getting their Second Front in the spring and now they demand more. He sighs and says, “With friends like this who needs enemies?”

US bomber losses for 1943 were 997 and British bomber losses were 2,369 as announced by the British Air Ministry.

Kesselring threw 7 divisions at Anzio.

The SS S-47, 11 miles NW of Lunga, underwent an attack made by 5 PGs.

The SS Scorpion, 97 miles S of Tokyo, attacked her hunters and hit a DD with a fish causing fires. The 2 DDs and 2 PCs tried to avenge their cohort and gave the sub a rough time.

The SS Searaven, in the Malacca Straits, encountered a ML and hit it with a torpedo causing it to sink.

Tavoy was swept by 21 P-38Js and the Japanese CAP of 27 Georges gave battle. 7 of the Georges went down and another was damaged before the remaining Japanese planes fled. All of the Lightnings departed intact.

Koepang was swept by 55 X P-38J and the Japanese threw 12 X Jack, 13 X Tojo and 10 X Tony at them. Once again today the Lightnings proved that in capable hands they are superior as the Japanese lost 9 Jacks, 6 Tojos (1 damaged) and 7 Tonys to the Allies who lost a P-38J and had 2 others suffer damage.

Saipan was targeted by 105 X B-25J and their escort of 15 F4U-1. They did light damage to the port, caused a lone secondary explosion and inflicted light casualties. The IJA 3rd Division was attacked by 54 X P-39D, of which 2 were shot down and 4 more damaged by the flak. The Japanese had light losses. Then 48 SBDs (7 damaged), 84 TBFs (46 damaged) and 15 F4F-4s hit the 3rd Division. The unit had very heavy casualties from this strike. 8 SBDs (1 destroyed, 1 damaged) and 13 F4U-1s did light damage to the airfield. Then 13 F4U-1s, 85 SBDs (4 damaged), 20 SB2Cs (3 damaged), 53 TBFs (4 damaged), 17 TBMs (2 damaged) and 9 P-47Ds did moderate damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, caused some secondary explosions and inflicted heavy casualties on the personnel.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 29 miles SE of Pagan, was struck by 38 B-25Js, 35 Corsair IVs (1 destroyed, 3 damaged), 9 Spitfire VIIIs and 30 Thunderbolt IIs (1 downed, 3 damaged). The Japanese had very heavy casualties. The Japanese artillery, though loud and unsettling didn't hurt anybody. The Allied bombardment inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese.

The IJA 55th Division, in the Myitkyina area, was bombed by 34 X B-24J, 8 X Spitfire VIII, 103 X Liberator VI and 48 X P-38J. The unit suffered heavy losses and the Allied planes departed untouched. The Allied assault gained a little ground, caused extremely heavy casualties for the Japanese and heavy losses of their own.

Kai Island was swept by 64 X P-47D (5 damaged) and the planes did no harm to the Japanese.

Dili was swept by 61 X P-38J and 1 was destroyed and 4 others damaged as they did nothing to their target.

The SS Haddo, 14 miles E of Kagoshima, attacked and hit an AK with a fish.

The Allied troops at Chandpur are loading onto ships for an attack on Andaman Island. Meanwhile a few MSWs and a bombardment force are on their way there.

The SS Tarpon glides out of Luganville's harbor bound for her patrol area in the Solomons.

Sandy is holding 3 letters from Bill and she can't wait for a chance to sit down and read them. The war news on the radio has all been good, but mostly about Europe.

Sam has heard that Saipan is getting plastered on a daily basis and he hopes that there isn't a living thing there when the 25th arrives. He knows better, but a guy can always hope.

Elaine sits by the fireplace writing to Gil, telling him how cold this winter has been and that if he were there now they could snuggle in front of the fire.

Ed is concerned with the accuracy of his big guns as they've been very busy lately and barrel wear is on his mind. After Saipan is secured his Old Gals will have a chance for a breather and he's going to want a close inspection of all systems so that they can be ready for the next operation.

Koepang was hit by 142 X B-24D, 94 X B-24J and 49 X P-38J. 5 X Jack, 6 X Tojo and 3 X Tony rose to meet them. Between air combat and ground losses the cost to the Japanese was extremely heavy damage to the airfield, a large number of secondary explosions, 6 X Jack, 5 X Tojo, 5 X Tony, 3 X Helen, 12 X Zeke, 3 X Betty, 5 X Sally, a Dinah and 2 X Ida destroyed and heavy casualties for the ground personnel. The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 6 Helens and had very light losses.

The transports are all at sea and should hit Saipan tomorrow. Ed's Old Gals have replenished and are moving towards Saipan to lend their big guns to the invasion.

Sam is trying to get some sleep, but knowing what tomorrow will bring preys on his mind. Finally he dozes off and he gets a fitful sleep.

Gil has managed to find the time to sleep away half of the day. He's awakened by mail call and rushes out of the tent and waits to hear his name called, but he's disappointed. Another of the guys got a Dear John letter from his girl and for the rest of the day Brownie is busily cursing the 4Fs and all the others who have managed to avoid the draft.

Sylvia is getting big as a house and Pete is making a pain of himself as he doesn't want her doing anything other than resting. She says, “If I relax any more than I've been doing I'll be dead. Please Pete, you need to relax and we'll make it through this pregnancy together.” He says OK and heads into the pub to tend bar.

The Germans bombed London.

The Cruiser Penelope was sunk off of Naples by U-410.

The SS Searaven, in the Malacca Straits, came across an unescorted AK thanks to her radar. A torpedo hit set the ship on fire. No sooner than they had finished reloading their torpedo tubes another lone AK appeared. The hunters made a surface attack and the deck gun hit the target a couple of times while all 4 of the fish fired found the mark and exploded sending the ship to it's watery grave.

Koepang was bombed by 42 X B-24D (6 damaged) and 24 X B-24J 4 damaged). The AA fire was the only resistance offered as the planes caused heavy damage to the airfield, a few secondary explosions were seen, 5 Helens, 6 Sallys, a Betty, 2 Idas, 3 Tonys, 14 Zekes, 4 Dinahs, 2 Tojos and 2 Jacks were left destroyed on the ground and the troops had moderate losses.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 29 miles SE of Pagan was struck by 30X B-25J (5 damaged), 25 X Corsair IV (1 damaged), 8 X Spitfire VIII and 29 X Thunderbolt II (4 damaged). The unit took heavy casualties. The IJA 30th Division was visited by 28 Thunderbolt IIs (1 downed, 5 damaged) and 9 Spitfire VIIIs. Moderate casualties were dished out by the planes. The Allied troops had light losses from a Japanese artillery barrage and the Allied big guns caused very heavy losses for the Japanese.

The IJA 3rd Division, at Saipan, was attacked by 49 SBDs (1 downed, 5 damaged), 79 TBFs (5 destroyed, 19 damaged) and 15 F4F-4s. The unit had heavy casualties. Another attack of 27 TBFs (1 destroyed), 32 TBMs (3 damaged) and 15 F4F-4s hit the port for light damage, a couple of secondary explosions and light casualties. 57 SBDs (1 shot down, 4 damaged), 31 SB2Cs (1 damaged), 57 TBFs (1 downed, 2 damaged), 17 TBMs (2 damaged), 17 P-47Ds and 9 F4U-1s were next up and they caused moderate damage to the airfield, a few secondary explosions and heavy casualties.

The IJA 55th Division, at Myitkyina, was raided by 68 Liberator VIs, 45 P-38Js, 33 B-24Js and 8 Spitfire VIIIs. No planes were damaged and the troops had heavy losses. Elements of the IJA 33rd Division had moderate losses due to an attack made by 6 B-24Js, 30 Liberator VIs and 5 P-38Js. Allied artillery inflicted light casualties to the Japanese troops.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 9 X Helen and had light losses.

The invasion of Saipan goes off tomorrow morning and Sam is scared, He's considered a combat veteran, but he knows that this will be a tough go. Why, he wonders do they tell us tomorrow and then when the day arrives push it back to tomorrow? Haven't the brass ever heard of nerves? I hate this war and the Army, he silently thinks to himself as he watches the new guy sharpening his bayonet. Somehow being stabbed scares Sam more than being shot.

Gil got a letter today and he reads it wondering when, if ever, he'll see Pittsburgh or New York again. Being away from home is bearable, but the never ending training is tough to take. He's in no rush to join the fight, but at least it would give him a sense of purpose. Elaine's letter is lots of nothing, some complaining about the cold Pittsburgh winter and more about the lack of consumer goods.

Ed can't get any sleep because he feels that the bombardments have left much to do though intel seems to think that the targets have been eliminated. As usual it'll be the infantry that'll get the dirtiest job and they will be the ones to pay the steepest price for the conquest. He has no doubts about the success of the operation, just the cost.

Danish saboteurs attacked rail lines around Aarhus.

Tavoy was swept by 24 P-38Js and the Japanese futilely threw 22 Georges at them. 11 Georges were destroyed and a Lightning was damaged in the battle.

Lautem's airfield was heavily damaged by 141 X B-25J (2 downed, 23 damaged) and 12 Kittyhawk III. There were many secondary explosions and the troops had very heavy losses.

Lunga was swept by 21 P-38Js and they were challenged by 32 Zekes, 40 Jacks and 4 Tonys. 8 Zekes were shot down and another was damaged and 5 Jacks were splashed and one was damaged as the Lightnings lost 8 with 3 more being shot up.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 29 miles SE of Pagan was pounced on by Mitchells, Corsairs, Thunderbolts and Spitfires. A Mitchell went down and 3 were damaged, 3 Corsairs were damaged and 3 Thunderbolts were also damaged as they caused heavy losses to the Japanese. Allied troops had heavy casualties from the Japanese artillery bombardment. The Allied guns inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was attacked by 12 Helens and all of the bombs fell harmlessly off target.

The Allied troops attacked the remaining Japanese in the Myitkyina area. The Japanese had extremely heavy losses and the Allies suffered heavy casualties. The Japanese stubbornly cling to their defensive positions.

The Flying Deuces have joined in the battle in the air over Saipan. Stick enjoyed the show, but he feels like he's doomed to CAP and escort missions that will never run into the enemy. When he gets back to base he asks about being loaded with bombs so that he can finally get into the fight.

The Lucky 11 are scheduled for another flight which will stress formation flying at night and possible course changes. The actual flight time must be expected to be of a long duration as they are issued peanut butter and jelly sandwiches along with V8 juice. Gil thinks that at least everybody will know what they're doing long before they actually see combat. It's rumored that B-29s are already in action attacking targets in Burma.

On Lake Tinnsjo a ferry was sunk carrying the remaining “Heavy Water” from Telemark.

The USAAF attacked Hamburg, Leipzig and Braunschweig. This is the part of the “Big Week.”

Combat

The coastal guns at Saipan continue to take a very heavy toll of troops coming ashore and the ships disgorging them. Ed's Old Gals continue to plaster Saipan's defenses and the BB Pennsylvania was hit 3 times. The airfield was lightly damaged, as was the port, were some secondary explosions and troop losses were placed at very heavy. The IJA 3rd Division was attacked by 63 SBDs (1 damaged), 78 TBFs (2 downed, 20 damaged), 68 P-39Ds (1 destroyed, 1 damaged), 22 PB4Ys (1 damaged), 14 F4F-4s, 56 F6Fs and 12 F4U-1s. Japanese losses were light. Then before the Japanese could dust themselves off 30 SBDs, 15 P-47Ds, 91 B-25Js (1 damaged), 22 PB4Ys (1 damaged), 27 B-24Js, 19 FM-2s, 37 F6Fs, 27 F4U-1s and 11 F4U-1Ds. This time around the casualties were heavy. 25 TBFs, 29 TBMs (3 damaged), 14 F4F-4s and 46 F6F Hellcats did light damage to the port and negligible casualties to the personnel there. 27 SBDs (1 downed, 3 damaged), 31 TBFs, 14 P-47Ds, 22 FM-2s, 46 F6Fs, 30 F4U-1s and 12 F4U-1Ds did light damage to the airfield. The Japanese hit the Americans with a Banzai charge in a effort to drive them into the sea, but the defender's firepower was to much and the Japanese troops were shredded for extremely heavy losses as the Americans had heavy casualties.

The RN MSWs continue to seep the mine field at Andaman Island.

The SS O19 was laying mines near Amboina when an AP happened by and the sub hit it with a torpedo, causing fires and heavy damage. A short while later an IJN MSW detected the sub laid mines and started her dangerous work of clearing them.

Lunga was swept by 16 P-38Js and they were met by 23 Zekes, 33 Jacks and 3 Tonys. In the furball that followed 3 Zekes were shot down, 4 Jacks were splashed and a Tony went down while 4 Lightnings were destroyed and 2 others sustained damage.

The IJA 56th Brigade, 29 miles SE of Pagan, was jumped by 9 Spitfire VIIIs and 30 Thunderbolt IIs, 4 of which were damaged. Japanese losses were light. The IJA 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade, nearby, was attacked by 25 X Corsair IV (2 damaged), 10 X Spitfire VIII, 28 X Thunderbolt II (2 damaged), 18 X P-38J and 46 X B-25J (1 destroyed, 3 damaged). The LCU lost heavily. The Japanese lobbed shells at the Allied troops all day and caused moderate casualties while the CW gunners accounted for very heavy Japanese losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had light casualties at the hands of 12 Helens.

Stick is beat as today he flew a morning and an afternoon escort mission for planes attacking the Japanese on Saipan. He has been credited with 6 combat missions and he still hasn't seen a Japanese plane.

“Sam,” says the LT commanding his platoon, “Your squad, what's left of it, is yours. It'll be on the platoon's right when we get orders to advance so see to it's repositioning.” This shocks Sam as for 2 days staying alive has seemed to be an impossible task. His squad is down to 7 men, including himself, and with the way the Japanese artillery, mortars and machine guns pelt anything that moves it looks like that number will be dwindling. More troops continue to come ashore, but it's water, ammo and food that is needed the most. The Japanese attack of today was a horrifying thing as it started last night with infiltration by the Japanese where there was hand to hand combat. Some men who left their positions were shot by their own troops. Flares were constantly in the air and just when things would seem to quiet down there would be a scream. Trying to get some sleep while your buddy kept watch was impossible and then just before dawn thousands of Japanese surged forward and actually over ran some positions. The machine guns, mortars, artillery and naval guns saved the day and now a horrible stench is in the air as the day's heat has started to decompose the dead bodies. There are flies everywhere. It's like a living hell and the American troops are waiting for the orders to push inland in a major attack just to get away from this horrible place. I can't ever remember being this tired and thirsty, thinks Sam, and now I have to worry about more too. I hate the Army almost as much as I hate the Japs, he thinks.

Pete reads the newspaper about the Americans roughing up the Japanese in the Marianas and he pictures a map of the Pacific in his mind. “Jeez!” he lets out, “They are driving towards Japan and leaving Australia exposed.” He realizes that he's talking out loud and shuts up. What the hell are they up to leaving the Japs in control of so many bases that can threaten Australia?

Combat

An IJN MSW continued to sweep the mine field at Amboina.

The RN MSWs continued sweeping ops at Andaman Island.

Ed's Old Gals conducted another naval bombardment of Saipan and the BBs Pennsylvania (2), Oklahoma (5) and West Virginia (5) were hit by the shore batteries. The BB's guns lightly damaged the airfield and port. The IJA 3rd Division was attacked from the air by 94 X SBD (1 damaged), 30 X SB2C, 111 X TBF (1 destroyed, 12 damaged), 18 X TBM, 75 X P-39D, 12 X PB4Y, 15 X F4F-4, 53 F6F and 12 X F4U-1. The Japanese had heavy casualties. Another wave of planes then hit the IJA 3rd, this time there were 27 X SBD (1 damaged), 71 X B-25J (1 damaged), 21 X PB4Y (2 damaged), 36 X B-24J (1 damaged), 13 X FM-2, 41 X F6F, 21 X P-47D and 27 X F4U-1. The unit again had heavy losses. The airfield and port then took light damage at the hands of 17 SBDs, 24 TBFs (2 damaged), 23 FM-2s, 45 F6Fs, 34 F4U-1s and 18 F4U-1Ds. Japanese artillery tried and failed to hurt the US troops.

Koepang was hammered by 140 B-24Ds and 67 B-24Js. 1 of each typed was shot down and the former had 13 damaged while the later had 5 damaged. The airfield sustained extremely heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions seen, 3 Bettys, a Tony, a Helen, a Tojo and a Dinah were destroyed on the ground and personnel had very heavy casualties.

The IJA 35th Brigade, still 29 miles SE of Pagan, was bombed and strafed by 27 Thunderbolt IIs, 23 Corsair IVs and their escort of 10 Spitfire VIII. 7 of the Thunderbolts were damaged and the unit took light losses. The IJA 30th Division was then hit by 23 Thunderbolt IIs and 10 Spitfire VIIIs. 4 of the Jugs were damaged and the unit had light losses. The artillery exchanges continued and the Allied lost lightly while the Japanese had very heavy losses.

The IJA 49th Division, blocking the crossing of the Irrawaddy approaching Rangoon, was struck by 19 B-25Js and 21 P-38Js. A Lightning was damaged and the unit had light losses. This unit will cause monumental problems for the CW units poised to force their way across the river.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was visited by 9 Helens and both sides weren't able to do anything of note.

The SS Haddo was being hunted by a PG, an MSW and 3 PCs when the hunted became the hunter. 2 fish slammed into the PG. The Haddo the slipped away with no damage.

The 1st Marines boarded ships and are bound for Guam, where they will rest and then be utilized by CENPAC. SOPAC is not happy to lose this division, but an Army division is replacing it.

Stick is exhausted as he flew 2 more escort missions today. He still hasn't had so much as a sniff of a Japanese plane. “I'll probably forget how to fire the plane's guns if and when the time comes,” he jokes that night while lying on his cot.

Gil is sitting in the nose of the plane as they fly over the city of Denver. He wonders what New York City would look like from this altitude. These flights are so boring that he's struggling for things to kill the time. This training mission is unlike the others that they've been on so far. This time there will be fighters to contend with to help those pilots with intercepts. Gil sighs and returns to his station, thanking Ham for the view.

Dave has managed to get some re-manufactured parts and the word has been passed to those people who were waiting for them. There is little business to be done with repairs as long as parts are in such short supply. Dave can't remember ever having to machine parts himself as a stopgap measure to keep folks on the road. “As long as we have coffee the world will be alright,” he jokes with one of his pals who is hanging around today as his car is worked on.

A debate is raging in the Pentagon about the need to take Kwajalein. Nobody really wants to utilize the forces needed to get the job done, but the Navy complains about the distances added to the trip from SWPAC and SOPAC to the CENPAC area. This will become more vital as the war continues.

Combat

An IJN MSW continues to sweep the mine field at Amboina.

The RN MSWs were still sweeping mines at Andaman Island when the IJN slipped into the area with the BB Hyuga and 5 DDs and they clobbered the MSW Romney. As the intruders continued their sweep of the area they discovered the MSWs Agra, Cuttack and Patna and dispatched them also. The RN surface combat force never responded and they were in a position to intercede.

The SS Trident, 72 miles of Victoria Point, tracked a Japanese ship on radar as she got into a position to attack it. What turned out to be a lone AK was hit with 2 torpedoes.

Saipan was bombarded by the American BBs once more and the airfield and port were lightly damaged, a few secondary explosions were observed and troop losses were light. The BBs Nevada (2) and Colorado (4) were hit by the coastal guns. They Japanese guns also took unloading American ships under fire and the hit some LSTs, APs and the CL Mobile causing extremely heavy troop losses. The IJA 3rd Division was attacked by 52 SBDs (1 shot down, 4 damaged), 30 SB2Cs (2 damaged), 93 TBFs (2 destroyed, 12 damaged), 18 TBMs (1 damaged), 18 P-39Ds (2 damaged), 12 PB4Ys, 15 F4F-4s and 59 F6Fs. The unit suffered moderately heavy losses. The another raid of 26 SBDs (1 damaged), 21 P-47Ds, 86 B-25Js (5 damaged), 20 PB4Ys (1 destroyed, 30 B-24Js, 14 FM-2s, 23 F6Fs and 16 F4U-1s hit the 3rd inflicting heavy losses. The 54th Construction Battalion was pounced on by 67 P-39Ds (2 damaged), 8 PB4Ys (1 damaged) and 2 F4U-1s. The unit had light casualties. 26 TBFs (2 damaged), 30 TBMs (3 damaged), 14 F4F-4s and 56 F6Fs struck and dished out light casualties to the Japanese. The American troops launched an all out assault on the Japanese defenses and virtually destroyed the defensive network while inflicting extremely heavy losses on them. The Americans had very heavy casualties.

Lautem was attacked by 125 X B-25J, 22 X Kittyhawk III, 31 X P-38J and 71 X P-47D. The Japanese gave battle with a Zeke, a George and a Jack which were all quickly dispatched by the escorts. A B-25J went down and 15 were damaged while a Lightning went down and another was damaged. The airfield had moderate damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and personnel casualties were heavy.

The IJA 30th Division, 29 miles SE of Pagan, was attacked by 18 Corsair IVs (4 damaged), 8 Spitfire VIIIs and 22 Thunderbolt IIs (6 damaged). The unit had heavy losses. The Japanese artillery caused very light casualties to the Allied troops. An Allied attack resulted in both sides suffering extremely heavy losses, but the Japanese were force to retreat towards Rangoon. It appears that some of the Japanese have managed to act as a rear guard and are still facing the Allied troops.

The IJA 49th Division, guarding the Irrawaddy, was bombed and strafed by 23 P-38Js (1 damaged) and 33 B-25Js to the tune of moderate losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, still frozen in place, had light losses as 6 Helens dumped their bombs on them.

The Japanese attacked the RN TFs about 29 miles N of Andaman Island with 3 Zekes, 17 Judys and 12 Jills. 14 Hellcat IIs and 7 Corsair IVs engaged them and at the cost of a Hellcat being damaged the Japanese lost 2 Zekes, 5 Judys and 7 Jills. The rest of the Japanese planes fled before ever seeing the RN ships. This force will now retire as an invasion of the island is impossible without the mines being removed and that's impossible without MSWs.

At Myitkyina an Allied attack caused extremely heavy losses for the Japanese and the Allied troops had very heavy casualties in their effort.

Sam sits next to a burned out Japanese bunker with his squad gathered around him. They lost another man in today's attack and Sam was wounded, though he refuses to come off the line. “Its nothing,” he told the medic and the man proceeded to patch him up and told him to report to the aid station as soon as possible, He also told Sam to be careful of getting the wound infected. Sam feels that he can't abandon his squad now when they need him the most. He was told to keep it clean, like that's possible. Another thing that has Sam afraid of is the Army's policy of sending men who have recovered from wounds back to some other unit than the one they came from as a replacement. He doesn't think his wound is bad enough to keep him away for long, but he doesn't want to take any chances. He's fought twice with these guys and they trust one another.

Stick continues to fly escort or CAP missions and he's beat as he's flying in the morning and again in the afternoon. “It beats the hell out of the infantry,” one of the guys remarked and Stick agrees as he collapses into his cot for a night's sleep.

General Lucas was sacked and replaced by General Truscott.

The German attacks continued to shrink the Anzio perimeter.

The total US casualties to date are: 19,499 KIA, 45,545 WIA, 26,339 MIA and 26,754 POWs.

Combat

Saipan's coastal guns continue to fight on, hitting a DD once and causing heavy American losses to troops landing on the island. The IJA 3rd Division was under air attack and 3 SBD, 2 SB2Cs, 5 TBMs and 2 PB4Ys were damaged and a TBF was shot down (11 damaged). The unit had very heavy casualties. As the Japanese troops started to lift their heads another raid hit them and a B-25J was downed while 10 more were damaged. 6 F4U-1s, 2 SBDs, 3 PB4Ys and 3 B-24Js were also damaged in the attack that caused the 3rd more heavy losses. The 54th Construction Battalion was attacked and had very light casualties while the Americans had 3 SBDs, 2 Airacobras and a PB4Y damaged. The 54th was then hit again later in the day and had light losses while a Thunderbolt, 5 Mitchells, 4 PB4Ys and 2 B-24Js were shot up. Another raid by American planes inflicted light losses on the Japanese. A naval bombardment by Ed's Old Gals inflicted extremely heavy casualties on the Japanese and did light damage to the airfield and port while causing some secondary explosions. Japanese artillery vainly tried to hurt the Americans. The organized Japanese defense of Saipan was shattered when the Americans swept the Japanese into a small corner of the island. The Japanese had extremely heavy losses and the Americans had heavy casualties. A Zeke was destroyed by the victorious troops at the shattered airfield.

Sweeping ops at Amboina continue as the IJN MSW tries to find and clear all of the mines.

The IJA 55th Division, in the Myitkyina area, was attacked and had very heavy casualties at the hands of the Allied planes. In the afternoon Allied troops attacked and inflicted extremely heavy losses on the Japanese, but failed to dislodge then from the area while they had heavy losses.

The IJA 56th Brigade, 29 miles SE of Pagan, had light losses and 5 Thunderbolt IIs were damaged in the attack. In the afternoon the IJA 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade was bombed and strafed causing light losses. The Allies had 2 Corsairs and a Thunderbolt get damaged. An artillery barrage by the Japanese was way off the mark and hurt only some foliage. An Allied attack caused extremely heavy casualties to the Japanese who were forced to retreat towards Rangoon. The Allied troops had very heavy losses.

The 49th Division, at the Irrawaddy River crossing, was attacked by Allied planes and had heavy casualties while a Lightning was damaged.

The Allied TF, in the mid Pacific between Pearl and the USA, was attacked by 58 Zekes, 17 Judys, 12 Zeros and 49 Jills. The TKs were being escorted by only DEs and 3 of the TKs were hit by a torpedo and a DE was also hit by 1.

Another Allied TF a few hundred miles away, was attacked by 23 Zekes, 16 Judys, 4 Zeros and 29 Jills. An AK was hit by a bomb, another by a fish, a DE was torpedoed and a SC ate a bomb. 6 Jills were damaged by the flak.

The SS Sawfish, 77 miles E of the Amami Group, was trying to work herself into position to attack an AK when the DDs escorting it detected her and drove the sub off.

Sam is happy that his battalion has been moved to regimental reserve. His squad suffered more casualties today and there are all of 6 men left in the squad. Of those 6 2 are wounded and Sam unhappily absorbed a piece of shrapnel today. The medic removed the nasty little shard and pleaded with him to go to the aid station. As his unit is off the line for a while Sam relents and once there he's cleaned up and told to rest. He's tagged and told he may return to his unit.

Sandy goes into town and once there bumps into a couple of her friends. They go to a soda fountain for a phosphate and then decide to see a matinee. They don't know what movie is playing, but it's something different to do. They have an hour to kill before the movie begins so they talk and one of the girls asks about Bill. “I get lots of letters from him on a very irregular basis that don't tell me where he is or what he's doing. He says I'm always on his mind and that he misses me, but nothing about when he'll be back. It's so frustrating, the waiting and not knowing.” Sandy grows silent as she thinks of him.

Ed is amazed that despite the ongoing naval and aerial bombardments in concert with ground assaults the Japanese are continuing the fight. “These SOBs must be made of the same stuff as the old Spartans,” he remarks.

The ball bearing factory at Schweinfurt was hit by the USAAF and the RAF.

Combat

An Ann attacked the SS Darter about 85 miles E of Batan Island. Darter is reported to have been hit and has flooding. She will make for Wake. Radar never showed a plane.

The IJN MSW is still sweeping mines at Amboina.

Palau's airfield was struck by 31 X B-24J. Heavy AA damaged 10 of the bombers as they did light damage to the field and caused some secondary explosions.

Jaluit's port was targeted by 44 X B-24J and 45 X P-38J. The planes couldn't locate the target due to cloud cover.

Port Moresby was attacked by 96 X B-17E and the Japanese sent 17 Jacks, 30 Zekes, 10 Tojos and 7 Tonys to intercept them. In the chaos the bombers tried to fight off the fighters and 4 Jacks were shot down (10 damaged), 10 Zekes were destroyed (10 damaged), 5 Tojos downed, 6 Tonys splashed and 6 Judys were destroyed on the ground. The fighters and flak killed 28 bombers and damaged 40 more. The airfield had moderately heavy damage, some secondary explosions were observed and personnel losses were heavy.

The IJA 49th Division, guarding the Irrawaddy River crossing, was bombed and strafed by 27 Corsair IVs (3 damaged), 10 Spitfire VIIIS, 19 Thunderbolt IIs, 21 P-38Js and 24 B-25Js. The unit sustained moderate losses.

The IJA 34th Ind. Mixed Brigade, 68 miles N of Rangoon, was jumped by 22 Thunderbolt IIs (2 damaged) and 9 Spitfire VIIIs. Japanese losses were light.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 6 Helens and had light casualties.

15 Judys, 32 Jills (1 downed, 14 damaged), 45 Zekes and 12 Zeros attacked the Allied ships trying to flee. 3 AKs were struck by fish, one of them was hit twice and a DE was torpedoed. Later 4 Jills and 10 Zekes appeared and a Jill was splashed and 2 others were damaged as an AK was hit by a torpedo. Yesterday 4 CVs were dispatched from Pearl to try to intercept the Japanese and it looks possible that an interception of the raiders could be made.

Kwajalein was swept by 14 X P-47D and the Japanese tried to intercept them with 30 X Zeke. Due to the heavy cloud cover no planes were able to engage. Then 23 X PB4Y came in and the Zekes had targets. 5 bombers went down and 11 others were damaged. The Japanese lost 2 Zekes and had 7 more damaged. The port was lightly damaged, there was a lone secondary explosion and troop losses were placed at light.

On Saipan the Japanese hurled artillery and mortar rounds at the Americans, causing very light casualties. The Allied troops attacked the surrounded Japanese who had very heavy losses while the Americans had heavy casualties.

The Allied assault in the Myitkyina area caused the Japanese extremely heavy losses while the attackers had heavy casualties. Little ground was gained, but the Japanese are now surrounded.

The 25th Division has been pulled from the line so that it may refit and be ready for the next big operation. Sam doesn't care what the reason that they are getting showers, hot food and rest as long as nobody is shooting at him.

Stick has been flying 2 missions per day and he's beginning to drag. The skipper has noticed this and decides that a day off wouldn't hurt so now Stick is writing a letter home before heading off for chow. The Flying Deuces aren't sweeping the skies, but they are doing their jobs and HQs notices things like that.

Helena's TF returned to Guam and will replenish and rest a bit before the next operation commences. Ed's Old Gals are also at Guam and Ed, upon learning that the Helena is nearby, sends word inviting Bill to dine with him aboard the West Virginia. The 2 enjoy each other's company and talk of old times. “It seems so long ago in that office with your map with all of those pins marking the Japanese conquests. Now with the shoe on the other foot we have to be on guard against getting careless,” Ed says. As they are talking a radio man delivers a message to Ed. He reads it and tells Bill of the 2 convoys being attacked by IJN CVs between the US and Pearl Harbor. “You see what I mean? We got careless,” Ed says, “The good news is that the hunters don't know that they are now the hunted. Lingering to long will cost them. Pearl dispatched some carriers and with any luck the tables will be turned.” Bill nods and pictures the events about to unfold thousands of miles away.

Once more my apologies. Due to a never ending string of severe T storms the storyline has been omitted.

Combat

The SS Searaven, 20 miles SW of Singapore, spotted surface ships approaching at high speed on her radar. She dove and the 4 DDs never got a fix on her.

The SS Templar, 68 miles NE of Medan, stalked 5 DDs, but never managed to achieve a favorable position to attack them from.

The SS Haddo, 82 miles S of Kagoshima, attacked 3 PCs and a MSW. A PC was destroyed by 2 torpedo hits. The Haddo underwent a short, but violent attack. Haddo has some minor leaks and systems damage and will curtail her patrol and head back to the barn.

The SS Darter, 212 miles S of Okinawa, spotted 2 AKs being escorted by 4 DDs. She managed to hit one of the AKs with a fish.

Jaluit was the target for 43 X B-25J and 41 X P-38J, but due to cloud cover the target was obscured and the mission was scrubbed.

The IJA 49th Division, guarding the Irrawaddy River crossing, was hit by 28 B-25Js, 30 Corsair IVs, 7 Spitfire VIIIs and 22 P-38Js. The Japanese had very heavy casualties and all of the planes departed safely.

The IJA 34th Ind. Mixed Brigade, 69 miles N of Rangoon, was attacked by 23 Thunderbolt IIs (1 downed, 10 damaged) and 7 Spitfire VIIIs. There were moderate Japanese losses.

The 121st IJA Base Force, 19 miles N of Lashio, was struck by 93 X Liberator VI and 9 Spitfire VIII. All of the planes were untouched as they inflicted very heavy losses on the unit.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 9 Helens and had very light losses.

The TK Huguenot, midway between the USA and Pearl Harbor, was targeted by 48 Zekes, 12 Zeros and a Jill (damaged), but the Jill's fish missed, much to the relief of the crew of the ship. The USN's force gets nearer and hopes to cut off the retreat of this raiding force.

Kwajalein was hit by 14 X PB4Y (1 downed, 5 damaged) and 22 Zekes attacked them. 2 Zekes were destroyed and 2 were damaged. The base was undamaged, but the bombs caused a secondary explosion.

A Japanese bombardment attack at Saipan by their stubborn gunners inflicted extremely light casualties on the Americans who launched an attack on the hopelessly outnumbered and surrounded Japanese. The Japanese had very heavy losses while the Americans had heavy casualties.

An Allied attack on the Japanese in the Myitkyina area inflicted extremely heavy losses while the attackers had heavy casualties.

The “Big Week” ended today with German production down by 20%.

Combat

A Japanese TF comprised of 1 X CA, 1 X CL and 2 DDs attacked the convoy midway between the US and Pearl. 3 X DE and 4 X SC engaged them and prevented any of the TKs from being attacked. A DE went down and the other 2 were heavily damaged and burning. The IJN CL was hit 5 times. An American TK was the target of a Jill and a Zeke. The Jill was damaged and the ship was unharmed.

Koepang was bombed by 48 X B-24D (2 damaged) and 30 X B-24J. The airfield was lightly damaged and the port was moderately damaged. There were many secondary explosions observed and the personnel had heavy casualties. Then another raid of 86 X B-24J (1 downed, 9 damaged) appeared and moderately damaged the port and caused many more secondary explosions.

Jaluit's port was lightly damaged by 54 X B-25J and 58 X P-38J.

24 P-38Js swept Lunga and they were engaged by 24 Zekes, 28 Jacks and 2 Tonys. The Americans lost 11 planes and 2 others were damaged while the Japanese had 7 Zekes, a Jack (1 damaged) and a Tony shot down.

The IJA 55th Division was attacked by 28 X B-24J and 71 X P-38J. The Japanese had very heavy losses. The IJA 49th Division, near Myitkyina, was targeted by 28 Corsair IVs, 9 Spitfire VIIIs, 20 P-38Js and 23 B-25Js. The Japanese had heavy losses. Another Allied attack inflicted very heavy casualties on the Japanese who managed to retreat on the trail leading to China. The Allied forces had light losses.

33 X Liberator VI hit the 47th Construction Battalion, 19 miles NW of Lashio, for very light casualties. 64 Liberator VIs and 7 Spitfire VIIIs then made an attack causing heavy troop losses.

The IJA 34th Ind. Mixed Brigade, 22 miles from the Irrawaddy River crossing, was pounced on by 16 Thunderbolt IIs (3 damaged) and 10 Spitfire VIIIs. Japanese casualties were light.

85 miles SE of Tokyo the SS Scamp targeted and hit an AK with a torpedo. The PG was a helpless onlooker and never located the sub.

At Saipan the Americans attacked the Japanese who had very heavy casualties while the attackers lost heavily.

2 USN CVTFs consisting of 2 CVs each are closing in on where the suspected IJN raiders are. A 2 day sprint and now cruising along normally it is hoped that they will find the Japanese ships in a day or 2.

Ed goes over status and intel reports and feels that Ulithi will be taken in a cake walk. Iwo Jima and Bonin will be much tougher nuts to crack. He wonders if the Japanese didn't throw to much effort into their outer defensive ring, thus making the going easier than expected now.

The training cycle is starting to wind down for the Lucky 11. Gil considers himself pretty good at what he does as do the rest of the crew. The only doubts they have are can they really rely on engines with problems in combat?

Stick flew 2 missions today and admits to himself that the time off made him sharper.

Sam actually got a full night's sleep for the first time in what feels like ages. Replacements are already filtering in, though the units on the line are the priority on them. They did get 1 new guy who seems a bit strange. He doesn't talk much and is obsessed with his weapons. No problem with that as they will keep you alive if they function. Sam writes a letter home to his folks telling them of his new responsibilities and the ribbing he got from the guys. They listened to him though and acted quickly, without question as they trust him. So far, so good.

A raging debate is going on between various commands competing for naval support. In the North joint action with the Soviets against the Japanese needs naval support. CENPAC continues to get the lion's share of muscle as they meet with continuing success. SWPAC and SOPAC see dwindling Japanese forces facing them and they want to push them out. The only additional operation that looks to be getting added to the table is Kwajalein as it's disruptive to shorter communication lines. There does seem to be a growing agreement that SWPAC and CENPAC will both converge on the Philippines.
