It looks to me like you could add the New Mexico, North Carolina and South Dakota to the Operation if you feel the need. Their damage isn't debilitating and it isn't like your TFs are hoping to sneak in undetected.

It will be interesting to see what the reaction to your taking of Dobo will be. Holding that base is like driving a rusty nail into their knee.

Indeed. Easy B-17 range to Sorong and Ambon and even Koepang. B-24's from Dobo can even hit Kendari. JJ can certainly make it difficult to build up the airfield at Dobo. It would take a big effort to take it back.

Dobo is also C-47 range from Srong.

New Mexico could probably be pressed into service as a bombardment platform. North Carolina and South Dakota are both halfway to Pearl. They need dry dock and are too big for Sydney.

Gove should be a fighter strip in 2-3 days. It seems to buildup at Gove is going largely unnoticed. Bombers at Darwin could easily wreck the SeaBees there and there are no combat troops there. The minute Gove is level one, C-47's will fly in aviation support and there will be 50 P-40K's. Then the serious stuff can be brought in. Dobo might be ready by D-Day.

The P-40K's can sweep over Darwin and soften things up for the B-24's which will have to redeploy back to Alice.

Prior to that, however, the troops at Daly can start pushing North to draw attention southward. About the same time, some Mariens can land at Terapo in New Guina and draw attention in that direction.

With Gove and Dobo in Allied hands I doubt they will fall for that. They will see the obvious threat but it may be too late.

Carriers;

CV:

Wasp, Yorktown and Irrustrious.

Wasp could use a short dry dock time to repair up but can be used as is if we dont have enough space at Sydney.

CVE:

Copahee, Nassau, Altamaha, Prince William and Long Island

We have two more modern CVE's arriving Panama next 3-7 d but they might not make it in time.

Hermes got sent out on a training exericise when the RN CV's left Ceylon. Her crew is quite proud as the Opfor has not spotted her for 2 months.

Do you have a picture of the carriers?

Yes, I posted the wrong one.

Hanger space for 327. Not sure we have that many aircraft, but we can put up a lot of fighters if we use the replenishment squadrons as active squadrons.

You can also use Dobo to cover operations to take the string of islands to the west of Dobo. Some of the bases there can be built up to lvl 8 AF. Then on to Dili.

One of the few good things about JJ invading Oz is that we get to use lots of troops in combat who would otherwise sit out the war completely.

Amen! - You have both been scraping the bottom of the barrel pretty hard. Evidence - the Canadian KVs and Bollingbrooks in Austrailia! - Multinational relief columns!

Well, since De Havilland built the Mosquito, the Rapides must also be excellent aircraft. What're you waiting for?

Admiral Lord Sprior:

I did some calcualtions (I'll bill you later). We have 102K of troop lift support capacity in the form of true AP's with speed >16 kts in the area that will be available for loading toward the end of December.

Not counting aviation support troops which dont have to land on D-Day, we have 20,800 troops to load at Sydney and 19,400 at Melbourne for a grand total of 40,200. We also have quite a bit of cargo capacity to load but we have plenty of 17 kt AK's so cargo and vehicles won't be the limiting factor.

We could go all in on D-Day with all the armor, Marines, two Aussie Divs., 6 arty units and mutiple bn. of engineers plus I Aus Corps, I Amphib Corps and South PAC HQ with 100 naval support points and have about 2.25 troops lift point capacity per lift point required. This is quite good and we can get it to 3:1 by throwing in some of the fast APx.

A 3:1 ratio gives a very good unload on day 1.

This leaves enough spare lift capacity in APx's to land simultaneously at Bathurst Is. just north of Darwin to give us an emergency airfield in a week or so.

I have identified 5th Marine Regt at Merauke as a reserve.

There are also very large reserves on Fiji but I dont have the lift capacity to get them there quickly.

We need AKE's at Horn Is along with more supplies and fuel at Horn and Merauke and Gove (when it is ready)

The attack from Daly needs to start pretty soon if we are to go in around Chirstmas when the Aussie divs reach 50% prep.

Capt Mandrake your last three posts seem to indicate that there is a detailed plan brewing for the invasion of Darwin. This seems somewhat at odds with the AAR and risks informing your readers that you've actually planned (despite evidence to the contrary) some of the actions reported with much slapstick and mirth on the preceding pages.

Guys,

Why are you sold on an amphibious invasion of Darwin at this time? Why not go "all land" in your approach towards liberating the town? With the surfeit of strength you have on hand, it should be more than equal to the task.

It's eyeballs, man. The advertisers demand it, particularly in the key 25-55 WWII naval warfare enthusiast geek demographic.

*******6th Meeting, Plenary Interagency Planning Committee For the Operation that Shall Not Be Named (PIPCOSNOBEN), Brisbane, Dec. 4, 1942(c)*******

Lt. Gen. Doubleday, SWPAC PIPCOSNOBEN Liason: ...Right, now to agena item 3A, tides. Succintly, do we go in at high tide or low tide?

Col. Edson, SouPac: Excuse me General, I'm afraid that is immaterial. There are no tides in AE.

Lt. Gen. Doubleday, SWPAC PIPCOSNOBEN Liason: Now hold on Colonel, I have been very tolerant of your objections up to this point but all of us who are familiar with the sea have seen the tide come in and go out.

Col. Edson, SouPac: Yes sir, in the real world sir.

Captain Jack, USN: The "real world"? What other choice have we?

Col. Edson, SouPac: Why, AE, of course. General, let me try to illustrate. How many meals did you eat yesterday?

Lt. Gen. Doubleday, SWPAC PIPCOSNOBEN Liason: Meals?

Col. Edson, SouPac: Yes, as in the partaking of succor.

Lt. Gen. Doubleday, SWPAC PIPCOSNOBEN Liason: Succor?

Col. Edson, SouPac: Yes sir, succor.

Lt. Gen. Doubleday, SWPAC PIPCOSNOBEN Liason: Hmmm. Let me see. I had two eggs for breakfast, then some fried Spam for early morning snack, then I moved my bowels, then deviled ham sandwiches for mid morning snack...then..<begins mumbling and then after some thought> 12 or 13 I reckon.

Col. Edson, SouPac: Exactly, sir! It was a long day, wasn't it?

Lt. Gen. Doubleday, SWPAC PIPCOSNOBEN Liason: Yes, yes it was, now that you mention it? It thought it was the Southern Hemisphere.

Col. Edson, SouPac: It is one Earth sir. My money is on one of the players got busy.

Lt. Gen. Doubleday, SWPAC PIPCOSNOBEN Liason: Players?....

But Sprior- leaving the planning in the background aids in the suspension of belief and what not. Putting all the numbers out where everyone can read it would be like watching a Rowan Atkinson comedy with him giving a voice over commentary (given how straightlaced he is in real life).

Still- looking forward to the next move- where you going to hook east or west into Darwin? I'm assuming east but seem to recall some musings about forces marshalling in Perth?

For me my priorities will be:

1. Keeping up the supply shuttle to Port Hedland. If we can keep the troops supplies with bullets and bully beef they'll be a lot harder to dislodge. This means 4 or 5 Divisions worth of troops will be pinned there and unable to assist in the defence of Darwin:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Port Hedland at 57,129

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 15 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 13

Allied aircraft
P-38F Lightning x 2
P-38G Lightning x 4
F4F-4 Wildcat x 2

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 4 destroyed, 3 damaged

No Allied losses

Allied Ships
xAK Beltana
xAK Cardross, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Port Hedland at 57,129

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid spotted at 7 NM, estimated altitude 10,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 2 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G3M2 Nell x 12

Allied aircraft
P-38F Lightning x 2
P-38G Lightning x 3
F4F-4 Wildcat x 2

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M2 Nell: 6 destroyed

No Allied losses

2. The assault on Katy.

JJs airforce is also getting a bit cheeky on the Burma border:

Morning Air attack on Calcutta , at 52,37

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid spotted at 39 NM, estimated altitude 22,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 13 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 37

Allied aircraft
Sea Hurricane Ib x 12
Hurricane IIb Trop x 3

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 2 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Sea Hurricane Ib: 1 destroyed
Hurricane IIb Trop: 2 destroyed

Morning Air attack on AHQ Bengal , at 65,38 (Ledo)

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 35 NM, estimated altitude 18,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 11 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 32

Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIc Trop x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 12 damaged
A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed by flak

Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane IIc Trop: 1 destroyed

I had to go to sleep last night worrying the Port Hedrand force would see their last day of liberty. Instead they dished out 3:1 casualties after the bombers drove the attack ratio down to 2;1. Despite clear weather over the target, the B-25's from Carnarvon and I think the B-24's at Geraldton were grounded.
