Combat

The Japanese hit the convoy again with 1 X CA, 1 X CL and 2 DDs. 4 SCs threw themselves to the wolves in an effort to save the defenseless TKs, of which 1 was hit by a few shells and a torpedo. All of the SCs went down. The IJN CL took a shell hit.

An IJN PG and 2 PCs found a mine field at Pescadores.

Rangoon's airfield was bombed by 32 X B-24J and AA fire damaged 16 of them. The base was lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions and personnel losses were heavy.

Koepang was attacked by 55 B-24Js and 7 were damaged by flak. The port was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions and troops had moderate casualties.

Kwajalein was swept by 24 P-47Ds and they were met by 29 Zekes. The battle was over quickly and the Japanese have 9 fewer Zekes now. A Thunderbolt was shot down and another suffered some damage.

Jaluit's port was lightly damaged and a secondary explosion was claimed as 46 B-25Js and 51 P-38Js attacked the island.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 79 miles NE of Rangoon, was bombed by 20 B-25Js and 2 were damaged. Troop losses were light.

The 18th Aviation Rgt , 19 miles E of Myitkyina, was bombed and strafed by 63 X P-38J and the unit had heavy losses.

The IJA 49th Division, 11 miles NW of Rangoon, was jumped by 45 Thunderbolt IIs, 19 P-38Js and 8 Spitfire VIIIs. The Japanese sustained heavy casualties.

The 121st IJA Base Force, 19 miles NW of Lashio, was hit by 93 Liberator VIs and 7 Spitfire VIIIs and Japanese casualties were very heavy.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 6 Bettys and had extremely light losses.

The Japanese struck at the USN TF closing on them with 23 Zekes, 3 Zeros and a lone Jill. They were annihilated by 145 Hellcats before they even came within sight of any ships. 3 Hellcats were downed and 2 more were damaged.

The TK California Standard was hit by 2 torpedoes launched by a sub. Shortly after the tanker went down.

At Saipan the Americans attacked again and squeezed the fanatical and starving Japanese into an ever smaller pocket. The Japanese had very heavy losses while the American casualties were moderate.

It is hoped that the USN CVTF has guessed right and will get an attack in on the IJN CVs that have been raiding and disrupting the convoy lanes between the USA and Pearl Harbor. It's anybody's guess which way the Japanese ships will go, but the Americans are betting that a run for home is in the cards as fuel is probably a problem. This is the USN's golden opportunity to turn the IJN into a fleet without flat tops.

Shortly forces will start boarding ships to attack the next targets for the Allies.

A large convoy has departed Seattle bound for the Alaskan area.

Stick continues with flying CAPs and feels like his Corsair is an extension of himself. He has so many hours in the birds now that he's an old hand at it.

The Lucky 11 have been informed that soon they will be shipped to a base to marry up with their new plane. This causes a ripple of excitement to travel through the crew until Jake says, “Relax guys, it's the Army's old hurry up and wait routine. We'll go when the time comes and until then we'll just continue doing whatever it is that we're tasked with.” This makes sense to Gil who has a growing confidence in Jake and his ability to protect his crew from harm.

FDR is closely following the events unfolding in the Pacific and was visibly pleased when he read about the Japanese attack being crushed by the Hellcats. “Those Grumman fighters really are as good as the company said they'd be. To bad all of our industry can't be relied on that way,” he remarked.

Stalin and Molotov have been working on a course of actions to weaken the Japanese position in Manchuria. They hope to pave the way for successful military operations with negotiations with Tokyo. “They can't afford to have war with us too,” Stalin said.

Arabs protested to the US over Senate statements about the creation of a Jewish State in Palestine.

Combat

The 5th Air Division, 19 miles E of Myitkyina, was pounced on by 66 P-38Js who proceeded to bomb and strafe the Japanese. 2 planes were damaged and troop losses were very heavy.

Koepang was visited by 133 X B-24D, 12 damaged by flak. The airfield was very heavily damaged, some secondary explosions were seen and personnel losses were light.

Lautem was hit by 139 B-25J (29 damaged) and 18 Kittyhawk IIIs. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions claimed and casualties were very heavy for the men there.

Kwajalein was swept by 23 X P-47D and they were challenged by 24 X Zeke. 3 of the Zekes were shot down and a Thunderbolt was destroyed and another was damaged.

Jaluit was struck by 47 B-25Js and 50 P-38Js. The port was lightly damaged and all of the planes departed intact.

The 121st IJA Base Force, 19 miles NW of Lashio, was attacked by 91 X Liberator VI and 8 X Spitfire VIII. No planes were damaged and the Japanese unit had very heavy losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 9 Helens and the Chinese sustained light casualties.

Having found the Japanese in the morning hours a strike was thrown at them consisting of 116 SB2Cs, 72 TBMs and 72 F6Fs. The Japanese CAP of 24 Zekes and 4 Zeros tried to fight the American planes off and lost 19 Zekes and 3 Zeros. The Americans had a Helldiver go down (13 damaged), 19 Avengers were shot up and 3 Hellcats were destroyed (2 damaged by the air to air combat and the AA fire from the Japanese ships. The IJN suffered through the following:

CVL Zuiho, 4 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
CVL Ryujo, 4 bomb hits, 3 torpedo hits, sinks
CVL Chitose, 8 bomb hits, 1 torpedo hit, sinks
CV Katsuragi, 9 bomb hits, sinks
CVL Ryuho, 4 bomb hits, 1 torpedo hit, sinks

The Japanese managed to get off a strike of their own against the USN TF made up of 27 Jills, 23 Zekes and 10 Zeros which were greeted by 68 Hellcats and the fight was on. All of the Japanese planes were accounted for by the fighters and the flak before they could drop their loads. 4 Hellcats went down and 2 more were damaged. Another Japanese strike of 17 Judys, 10 Jills and 13 Zekes appeared a little later and 64 Hellcats were on hand to deal with them. 2 Judys managed to attack their target, but missed and then ran as did 10 Jills, who never pressed home an attack. All of the other Japanese planes were destroyed at the cost of 2 damaged Hellcats.

The SS Tactician, in the Malacca Straits, struck an unescorted AK with 2 torpedoes.

The SS Balao, 72 miles S of Kagoshima, was attacked by 5 IJN PCs, but suffered no damage.

An Allied bombardment attack 79 miles N of Rangoon inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese.

When running the combat file it showed 2 attacks on an Allied convoy approaching Cooktown from Darwin by Japanese planes. I wondered what happened to my LRCAP when I saw that in the 1st attack the CL Achilles and DD Arunta were each hit by a bomb delivered by Judys. The 2nd attack saw Achilles eat a fish as did 4 AKs. Upon checking the convoy I saw that this never happened, much to my relief. It must have been the phantom enemy attacking. Darned crazy electrons.

When told of the naval victory over the IJN FDR remarked that if his legs would allow he would've done a jig he was so happy. Nobody mentioned that the flat tops were scheduled for some yard work and just happened to be thrown at the problem with whatever support ships were available. The ad hoc force did it's job though and it's hoped that tomorrow will witness more sinkings of Japanese ships.

Stick keeps flying twice a day and the monotony is taking it's toll. He always feeling very tired and he's rapidly becoming sluggish. The problem is that this is happening to all of the pilots in the Flying Deuces.

Elaine puts a letter from Gil down and says to her sister that he's still in training and that he misses her. “It's always the same stuff with nothing about where he is.

Bill never heard back about his questioning if the Helena has been scheduled for any upgrades to her systems. They've been very busy lately with all of the action in the Marianas, but the CVs aren't really needed right now since the planes flying off of Guam and Tinian have the area covered. The LBA strength is growing every day and he's heard that Saipan is even open for business.

Another visit to the doctor was made by Pete and Sylvia. The 3 of them are doing fine and the baby will be with them before they know it. The entire family is getting more excited the closer the due date gets. Pete still wonders how life every brought him to where he is now and is happy that it did.

Koepang was the target for 118 B-24Ds of which the AA fire damaged 11. The airfield was very heavily damaged, there were a few secondary explosions reported and personnel losses were placed at heavy.

Palau was raided by 21 B-24Js and the flak damaged 11 of them. The airfield was very lightly damaged and a lone secondary explosion was claimed.

The Hopei Militia Division was attacked by 9 Helens who dumped their loads wide of the mark.

Kwajalein was swept by 18 P-47Ds and 13 Zekes engaged them. 4 of the Japanese planes were destroyed and the big American fighters departed unharmed.

An Allied bombardment 79 miles from Rangoon was ineffectual.

The US CVs have lost contact with the Japanese ships and surface units are sent out to form a picket line between the suspected Oilers and Japan. The CVs continue to sweep the area looking for targets that have vanished.

The CL Helena and DD O'Bannon sailed as part of the screen of a CVTF to cover the attack on Ulithi. Bill watches the O'Bannon moving off of the Helena's starboard quarter and wonders how Phil and Frank are doing. In the meantime Bill sees the Helena gliding through the swells and thinks of Bill.

The Flying Deuces now based on Saipan will resume full operations tomorrow. The pilots survey the area and are told by guards to remain within the confines of the airfield for their own safety. Stick has hopes of seeing some Japanese planes to splash as this is about as far forward a base as the US has.

Sandy got a couple of letters today and as she writes back to Bill she starts daydreaming of the approaching change of seasons. The war continues to rage on and there is no end in sight. Many of her friends are unhappy that it's taking so long to defeat the Germans and Japanese. They openly question the leadership and the conduct of the war to date.

Combat

Persistence paid off when a Helldiver spotted the Ryuho and reported a hit. A few hours later 57 Helldivers, 35 Avengers and 31 Hellcats attacked and hit the hapless vessel with 11 bombs, sinking it.

The SS Tactician, in the Malacca Straits, ambushed a ML and hit it with a torpedo and the Japanese have lost another ship.

Dili was bombed by 84 X B-24J and the AA fire damaged 2 of them. The airfield was lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were reported, 3 X Frances were destroyed and casualties were thought to have been light.

Lautem was pounced on by 112 X B-25J and 15 X Kittyhawk III. The flak downed 2 Mitchells and damaged 20 others. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were many secondary explosions and heavy casualties.

Pagan was attacked by 106 X B-25J and 12 X P-47D, AA fire damaged 7 bombers. The airfield was moderately damaged and there were some secondary explosions noted.

Palau was raided by 21 X B-24J and 7 of them were damaged by ground fire. The airfield was lightly damaged and the casualties were placed at very light.

Jaluit was visited by 57 X B-25J and 56 X P-38J The port was lightly damaged in the attack.

The 121st IJA Base Force, 31 miles NE of Myitkyina, was bombed and strafed by 42 Thunderbolt IIs and 63 P-38Js. Japanese losses were heavy.

The SS Skate, 211 miles SE of Kagoshima, attacked an AP that was being escorted by 8 X MSWs. The target was struck by a torpedo and the sub gave the escorts the slip.

About 78 miles N of Rangoon the Allied troops attacked the Japanese and inflicted very heavy losses on them, gained negligible ground and sustained extremely heavy casualties themselves.

The invasion of Ulithi is scheduled to take place in 2 days time.

The search for the Japanese Oilers continues and with each passing day the area where they could be grows larger, making them more difficult to locate. 2 of the CVs need to be sent to the yard for maintenance and upgrades and the question is how long will this be delayed?

Flying out of Saipan is providing more of the same old CAP missions for the Flying Deuces. “Being on some postage stamp sized atoll or a large island like Saipan makes no difference,” says Stick to anyone who will listen. “We can't go anywhere off the base anyway and that even puts the beach off limits to us right now.”

Bill likes the added responsibilities of a larger command, but he misses being a destroyer driver. The role of the cruiser seems to have become an AA platform to protect the carriers and there is little enough action in that with the fighters sweeping the skies of all opposition. While this disturbs him he knows that the war is being won and that the US will ultimately prevail as long as things continue to go as planned. That's the rub, he thinks, as nothing ever stays on track since the best of plans go to hell.

Pete and Sylvia are standing in the park and he puts his arm around her and says, “The only thing wrong with my having only 1 arm is that I can only give you half a hug.” He gives her a gentle squeeze and a kiss and she tells him that his hug is the one that she wants and that he's made her happier than she ever hoped to be. They head back to the hotel as Jac and Milt will be joining them for dinner tonight.

A report is handed to Admiral King that lists the following confirmed losses inflicted on Japanese shipping to date.

9 CV
3 CVL
1 BB
8 CA
6 CL
37 DD
6 APD
37 SS
1 AV
2 CS
27 ML
2 AS
20 PC
1 PT
42 MSW
9 PG
3 AR
29 TK
87 AP
64 AK

At the same time a report comparing aircraft losses of all types shows:

Japan 11,857
Allied 10,626

The British government reported that civilian deaths to date numbered 50,324 and for the military 50,103.

The German attacks on Anzio stopped after the loss of 3,500 men and 30 tanks in 4 days.

The Allies announced that Russia is to get 1/3 of the Italian fleet

Combat

Rangoon was bombed by 120 X Liberator VI and the AA fire damaged 9 of them. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions and ground personnel suffered very heavily.

Kwajalein was swept by 3 P-47Ds and they attacked the 22 Zekes on CAP. A Zeke went down to the Thunderbolt's slashing attack and the Jugs were gone before their numerically superior foe could react.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 78 miles NE of Rangoon, was bombed and strafed by 33 Mitchells (2 damaged), 24 Lightnings (1 destroyed, 3 damaged) and 9 Spitfires. Japanese losses were heavy.

The 109th IJNAF Base Force, on Pagan, was attacked by 85 Airacobras (1 damaged) who inflicted light casualties. Then came 24 SBDs (1 downed, 2 damaged) and 9 F4U-1Ds of the Flying Deuces. The port was lightly damaged by this strike.

The SS Taurus, in the Malacca Straits, attacked a ML striking it with a torpedo, sinking it.

The SS Sawfish, 81 miles SE of Kagoshima, was attacked by 5 PCs. The sub escaped without any damage.

The CVTFs in the convoy lanes have split off from each other. One will make for SF while the other replenishes and resumes the hunt for the AOs.

Stick has now 12 official combat missions under his belt, but not a sniff of an enemy plane yet. In Burma and the SWPAC area fighter pilots have been sweeping the skies and the kill counts mount while he hasn't even had a sniff. It's disheartening, but he goes about his job. He escorted an attack on Pagan today and took a few seconds to take in a bird's eye view of the goings on. He found himself wishing that his plane had been carrying bombs too.

Gil is tired of training and wants something mere challenging to do. Jake tells the crew that the longer it takes them to enter combat, the better. Nobody can argue with that, especially since he's got combat hours in B-17s in Europe.

Stalin is busily making plans to try and force the Japanese to pull back from the border areas and maybe make future conquests easier. The Red Army has been shifting troops and planes in anticipation of attacking, but the Americans are dragging their feet. Until they send the ships, planes, men and supplies to take Shikka Stalin won't order a general attack.

The USAAF launched and then canceled the first daylight heavy bomber raid on Berlin. 29 planes didn't get the message and they bombed the city.

Zhukov renewed the offensive in the Ukraine.

Combat

The Allied troops unloading over beach at Ulithi had heavy casualties, but the island and it's natural anchorage are now in American hands.

The SS Rasher, 23 miles W of Taipei, tracked a small convoy with her radar and got into an ideal attack position. She hit a TK with 2 fish and the escort of 3 MSWs milled around try to find the sub to no avail.

Jaluit was the target for 42 B-25Js and 41 P-38Js. The port took light damage.

The 109th IJNAF Base Force on Pagan was tagged for light losses by 96 P-39Ds (5 damaged) and 2 F4U-1Ds. Then 34 X B-25J Mitchell (4 damaged) and 9 X P-47D Thunderbolt added additional moderate casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was struck by 12 Helens and had light losses.

The SS Flying Fish, 17 miles W of Rabaul, hit an AP with 3 torpedoes, sinking it. The 3 PGs escorting it couldn't find the sub.

The 2nd Marine Division began loading onto ships that will take them to a destination that will mean life or death for the men, but they don't have a clue as to the location. Slim and Gunny are less than pleased to be packed onto another ship, but this time around the only stuff on board are their sea bags and 782 gear. Slim even remarked that he doesn't feel like a sardine this time around as the division was loading onto more than enough ships to carry it.

Still no word on the end of training and getting their own plane. The Lucky 11 are spending the day just lazing around with nothing to do. There are more crews than the trainers can handle because the planes are new and there still aren't that many of them to go around. Gil hear a rumor that B-29s were going to be sent to Alaska so they could bomb Japan. When he mentioned it to Gel the idea was immediately dismissed. “It's to far to fly and the weather is awful up there,” Gel said. Gil wonders where they'll end up as he ambles over to the mess hall.

Another boring CAP mission under his belt today and Stick attends the debriefing. He wonders what the point is as nothing ever happens on these CAPs and when they start asking him the routine questions he replies, “I took off on time, was on station, maintained formation and returned to base as scheduled.” He got up and before the debriefer could say anything to him he added, “Nothing ever happens on these CAPs other than I get to fire a test burst of the guns and we burn lots of gas.”

The 2nd Ukrainian Front's offensive is aimed at Uman.

Combat

The Allied convoy bound for Los Angeles was the intended prey of an IJN sub. The escorts detected their would be attacker and drove it off. Then, a few hours later, what was thought to have been the same sub tied and failed once more due to a diligent escort. This time multiple hits were claimed following a relentless dept charging of the sub.

Kwajalein was under a CAP of 14 Zekes when 24 P-47Ds dove on then from out of the sun. The sweep claimed 6 Zekes splashed at the cost of losing a Thunderbolt.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, 27 miles NE of Lashio, was targeted by 28 Thunderbolt IIs and 10 Spitfire VIIIs. A Thunderbolt was damaged as the Japanese sustained heavy losses. A short time later 42 Thunderbolt IIs and 64 P-38Js attacked and the unit had more heavy casualties.

On Pagan the 109th IJNAF Base Force was the object of attention for 85 X P-39D and 3 X F4U-1D. 3 Airacobras were damaged by the ground fire and the Japanese had light losses. Then 69 X B-25J and 14 X P-47D arrived on the scene and the Japanese suffered more light casualties. Another raid, made up of 25 SBDs (2 damaged) and 13 F4U-1Ds, rolled in and targeted the port doing light damage. Later 13 X SBD and 3 X F4U-1D appeared and lightly damaged the port. A Dauntless was damaged by the AA.

The SS Taurus, in the Malacca Straits, attacked a lone AP and sent 3 torpedoes into the ship, sending it to the bottom.

Stick flew an escort mission over Pagan today as the Japanese troops were pounded from the air. He wants to get in on the show and do some damage for once, but for now it's just not to be. Scuttlebutt has it that the Flying Deuces are soon to be pushed forwards to newly taken Ulithi as soon as the base is up and running. He doesn't put much stock in that though.

Phil peers through his binoculars as he wonders where the Japanese are. Surely they can't let the seizure of Ulithi go uncontested. He swings his glasses towards the CV Franklin and nods as he sees a Hellcat taking off. With the Japanese appearing to be on their heels he knows that now the Allied forces will need to keep the pressure up. Soon he feels that Japan can be cut off from her ill gotten gains. The only problem he can think of is that the IJN still has a fleet strong enough to cause problems with their battle wagons.

Bill is also watching carrier ops off of Ulithi and then he transfers his attention towards the O'Bannon. Somehow he misses her, the small ship bred a closer feeling among those on her. He sighs and returns to his cabin to write a letter to Sandy.

FDR is pleased with the increased tempo of activity in the Pacific and is told that Pagan Island is next up with the Bonins in the near future. He nods and asks about something else, such as the Philippines to cut Japan off from the resources that are keeping her industry running. He's told things are in the works, but that for now cutting Japan off from the CENPAC and SOPAC areas are the major concern. Kwajalein is brought up and how it's causing the lines of communication between those 2 commands to be made much longer than desired. “When we get the shipping need we could eliminate it,” suggests an admiral. Another admiral chips in with a remark at how the 2nd Marine Division's transfer will take much longer than necessary due to the island still being in Japanese hands. As usual the meeting breaks up with items being reviewed.

730 bombers and 796 fighters attacked Berlin and lost 69 bombers and 11 fighters.

Still using P-39's in March '44? Waste not, want not, I guess. But isn't it about time to get the Mustangs in on the action?

Yep, Mustangs arrive mid year and the Airacobras will be replaced soon enough with Lightnings as all the other groups were, save those in training.

Combat

The SS Scamp, 27 miles E of Kagoshima, lined up on a juicy TK and hit it with a torpedo. The escorts tried and failed to locate the sub, which made good her escape.

The SS Rasher, 15 miles N of Taipei, hit a PC with a fish. 2 PGs and 3 PCs had been hunting her through the night and just before dawn the sub turned the tables on them.

The SS Tarpon, 17 S of Buka, was attacked by 3 PGs, no damage was done.

The SS Dragonet, 83 miles E of the Amami Group, hit a TK with 2 torpedoes and then underwent a prolonged and accurate counter by the escorts. Her damage is moderate in both systems and flooding and she will now make for Guam to be repaired for the long voyage back to a yard.

Rangoon was bombed by 118 X Liberator VI. 13 of the planes were damaged by the AA. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were very heavy. A scant 12 minutes later 31 X B-24J appeared and the flak downed 1 and damaged 13 others. The airfield had additional light damage, a few secondary explosions were claimed and the personnel had heavy casualties.

Palau was targeted by 13 B-24Js, of which the flak damaged 13. They dished out light damage to the airfield, caused some secondary explosions, destroyed a Betty and inflicted very light casualties.

The 53rd Construction Battalion, 27 miles NE of Myitkyina, was attacked by 41 Thunderbolt IIs and 63 P-38Js. 1 of each plane type was damaged and the unit had heavy losses.

The IJA 30th Division, 71 miles N of Rangoon, was hit by 48 X B-25J (4 damaged), 20 X P-38J (2 damaged) and 10 X Spitfire VIII. The unit had heavy casualties. An Allied artillery bombardment caused light Japanese losses.

The 109th IJNAF Base Force, on Pagan, was struck by 21 X P-39D (1 damaged) and 3 X F4U-1D. All of the ordinance fell off target. Next up were 84 B-25Js (2 damaged) and 13 P-47Ds who inflicted light losses on the unit. 23 SBDs (2 damaged) and 10 F4u-1Ds made their run at the island, but did no damage.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 9 Helens and had light losses.

56 Helldivers, 34 TBMs (2 damaged) and 33 Hellcats attacked the Japanese CVL Zuiho in the Eastern Pacific. She was hit by 6 bombs and 2 torpedoes, spelling her doom.

The IJN APD near Lautem was attacked by 7 P-38Js and 2 Kittyhawk IIIs. The ship was repeatedly strafed.

The TF near Kai Island was attacked by 57 X B-25J, 20 X Kittyhawk III, 63 X P-38J and 7 X P-47D. No planes were damaged and the ships sustained the following:

AP Yamakuni Maru, 16 shell hits, bomb hits, on fire
AP Amagi Maru, 32 shell hits, 11 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP Kiyama Maru, 16 shell hits, 11 bomb hits, sinks
AP Kenzan Maru, 8 shell hit, 3 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP Kitano Maru, 4 shell hits
MSW W.33, 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage

Planning forges ahead to retake the Philippines and to take Okinawa.

The Allied troops in Burma continue to press the Japanese and the goal of taking Bangkok and pushing onto the Malay Peninsula are looking better and better.

After Arab protests the US says that the idea of a Jewish state has no official sanction.

Combat

The SS Scamp, 74 miles SE of Kagoshima, tracked down a lone TK and then fed it 2 fish, leaving it burning and heavily damaged. Ultimately the vessel sank. The Scamp was then found by 4 DDs who promptly let all hell break loose on her. Later in the day the sub was attacked again. This time by 5 PCs who rained down many depth charges on her. Though the sub has no problems with her water integrity she has accumulated some systems damage and will return to Wake to be worked on.

The SS Rasher, 14 miles E of Wenchow, located an AP, but failed to achieve a favorable firing solution. The sub kept after her prey and in the afternoon managed to hit the target with a torpedo, sinking it.

Rangoon was bombed by 44 Liberator VIs. 12 bombers were damaged by the AA fire. The airfield was heavily damaged, a large secondary explosion was reported and casualties to the ground personnel was moderate.

Koepang was raided by 31 X B-24J, 7 damaged by flak. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were many secondary explosions and the troops had heavy losses.

Dili had the attention of 143 X B-24D, ground fire damaged 9 of them. The airfield was very heavily damaged, many secondary explosions were seen and casualties were heavy.

Lautem was struck by 30 X B-24J and 1 was brought down by flak and 7 others were damaged. The port was moderately damaged and casualties were heavy.

Port Moresby was attacked by 51 X B-17E and 21 X B-24D. The Japanese CAP of 27 X Zeke, 17 X Tojo and 14 X Tony along with the flak took a heavy toll as 23 X B-17E and 10 X B-24D were shot down while 5 of the former and 1 of the later were damaged. The Japanese fighters paid the piper with the loss of 4 Zekes (12 damaged), 3 Tojos (9 damaged), 2 Tonys (11 damaged) and 4 Judys were destroyed on the ground. The airfield was lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions and troops had heavy losses.

The 18th Aviation Rgt , 27 miles NE of Myitkyina, was attacked by 28 Thunderbolt IIs and 9 Spitfire VIIIs. The unit had heavy casualties.

The IJA 30th Division, 71 miles N of Rangoon, was jumped by 18 X P-38J (1 damaged), 33 X B-25J (4 damaged) and 8 X Spitfire VIII. The Japanese had heavy losses. Allied artillery inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese.

On the island of Pagan the 109th IJNAF Base Force had heavy casualties at the hands of 76 X B-25J and 15 X P-47D. 23 SBDs (1 damaged) and 13 F4U-1Ds then dished out light damage to the port and a secondary explosion was seen. 13 X SBD and 6 X F4U-1D were then up and they added light damage to the port.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was raided by 12 Bettys and had extremely light losses.

Near Kai Island 8 X B-25J, 62 X P-38J and 13 X Kittyhawk III attacked an AP, striking it with 11 bombs and stitching it with 20mm, .50 cal from the strafing. Sustaining so much damaged proved the ship's undoing as she died a slow and painful death.

Some of the Flying Deuces flew into Ulithi today. Those who had problems with the planes will join as soon as possible. Stick looks around and thinks that this is out in the middle of nowhere and there's almost nothing to it. “This is sort of like Wake or Eniwetok,” he announces. The guys moan and make comments about the lack of diversions with these postings, but they all want only 1 thing and 1 thing only, to meet the Japanese in the air.

Gunny keeps after the men with vigor. “Lad,” he says to one of them, “I want that weapon clean as a whistle and I want it done yesterday.” Slim rolls his eyes knowing that the platoon is in for a long, boring cruise and that Gunny will be sure that they arrive ready for whatever the Corps throw at them.

Gil spent the better part of the flight trying to repair the radio, but no luck. “I can't fix what I don't have parts for,” he told Gel in his frustration. “I can send, but who the hell knows if anybody is receiving? “ Gel commiserates with Gil and then shows him a small stock of unauthorized parts that he brings on the flights. “Let me guess,” says Gil, “They can't punish you for it as long as we're headed for combat that's the worst they can do. A good idea and I'm going to supplement my stock also for the future.”

With Ulithi in hand the USN retires towards Guam and Bill looks forward to a bit of rest for himself and the crew. He wouldn't mind getting some mail either.

The 8th Air Force bombed Berlin again today.

Combat

Rangoon was subjected to a bombing by 98 Liberator VIs. The AA killed 1 and damaged 13 of the bombers. The airfield was very heavily damaged, there were a couple of secondary explosions and casualties were very heavy.

Ulithi was raided by 5 X Betty and they ran into 36 Hellcats and 6 Corsairs who promptly splashed 4 of them. 3 Hellcats were damaged in the lopsided fight and the remaining Betty dumped her load harmlessly off target and ran for home.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 71 miles N of Rangoon, was attacked by 30 X B-25J (4 damaged), 19 X P-38J (1 damaged) and 10 X Spitfire VIII. The Japanese unit absorbed heavy losses. Allied artillery pounded the Japanese positions for heavy losses during the day.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 9 X Helen and there were light casualties.

9 B-25Js, 53 P-38Js, 20 Kittyhawk IIIs, 21 P-40Ns attacked an AP near Lautem. The strafing and bombing devastated the ship that was packed with Japanese troops. The target absorbed 36 shell hits and 12 bombs, casualties were very heavy as the pilots told of men jumping off of the blazing vessel before it went under. The port was then hit by 91 X B-25J (1 shot down, 26 damaged), 66 X P-47D (1 destroyed, 4 damaged), 4 X P-38J and 23 X P-40N (2 splashed, 3 damaged) for moderate damage and a very large number of secondary explosions were seen. Casualties to the troops were reported as heavy. Another AP was attacked by 37 X B-25J, 38 X P-38J and 17 X Kittyhawk III. The ship took 19 bomb hits and was a burning hulk and then it too died.

Pagan's port was tagged for light damage and a secondary explosion by 24 SBDs and 8 Corsairs. Another strike of 12 SBDs did additional light damage to the port a little later in the day.

Stick finally was in some air combat and he's elated. He didn't get a kill, but he did get in a pass at a Betty. It was a deflection shot and he thinks he might of hit the plane. “Everywhere I looked there were damned Navy Hellcats in the way,” he said at the debriefing. When he heard that some of the Hellcats were damaged in the action he said, “It's no wonder they got shot up as they they don't know what the hell they're doing. If they had just left the Jap planes to us Marines we would've got them all and nobody would've gotten hurt.” The Navy actually got 2 of the kills, but he doesn't know that.

Sam removed his bandages and examined his wounds and decided that he's OK. He lights a smoke and drinks some water while wondering when they'll be getting replacements. Will we have the time to integrate the new guys into the squad before our next campaign? His head swirls with more questions than he ever imagined before. Responsibilities are weighing heavily on him and some of the guys are starting to refer to him as “Mother”.

The Chinese conferred with British commanders and it's been decided that the rebuilt Chinese Air Force will be returned to Chinese soil before June of this year. It is hoped that they can help bleed the Japanese forces and maybe combined with Allied pressure in Burma something will shake loose on the Asian mainland.

Stalin eyes a map and points at places that appear to be advantageous to attack. “I want the Japanese driven off of the mainland and back into their islands where they will never bother us again.” He slams a fist on the table to accentuate this. His generals don't want to fight the Japanese right now as they have their hands full with the Germans, who seem to be on the verge of collapse.

The SS S-31, 141 N of Dili, located an AP being escorted by 2 X DD, but failed to obtain a favorable firing solution.

The SS Pike, near Amboina, had just finished laying her mines when she found and hit an AP with a torpedo and then the 3 PGs escorting it found and pounded her. As soon as the Pike had reloaded her forward tubes a lone AP showed up and the sub hit it with a fish, sinking it. Then before any ASW assets appeared the Pike headed for the hills.

The 109th IJNAF Base Force, on Pagan, was the target of 48 X B-25J( 2 downed, 2 damaged) and 11 X F4U-1D. Casualties for the Japanese were light. 24 X P-39D (2 damaged) then attacked the same unit, but accomplished nothing other than keeping the Japanese heads down. The port was attacked by 13 X SBD and 7 X F4U-1D and personnel casualties were light. Ed's Old Gals pounded Pagan dishing out moderate damage to the airfield and port, causing a great many secondary explosions and inflicting very heavy casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 9 X Betty and had very light losses.

Palau was raided by 30 Helldivers, 27 Avengers and 38 Hellcats and to their surprise 25 Zekes, 11 Georges and 11 Jacks gave battle. 8 Zekes were shot down (1 damaged), 2 Georges were splashed (1 damaged) and 3 Jacks were killed (1 damaged) while the Americans lost 8 Helldivers (10 damaged), 2 Avengers (14 damaged) and 8 Hellcats. The airfield and port were both lightly damaged, there were a few secondary explosions and troop losses were placed at very light.

Allied artillery continued to pound the Japanese about 71 miles N of Rangoon, inflicting moderate losses on them.

An Allied assault 27 miles NE of Myitkyina caused extremely heavy casualties to the Japanese and moderate losses were absorbed by the attackers.

Allied armored formations are moving towards Rangoon and will lend their weight to the attacks being made on the Japanese defending there. Plans for an amphibious assault on Moulmein to cut off the Japanese are also under way.

Still no orders for the Lucky 11 so they continue to do what is most common in the military, wait. The guys talk of the upcoming Baseball season and agree that it just won't be the same with so many players trading team uniforms for those of Uncle Sam. Gil figures that the season will still supply it's thrills and says so. “Don't listen to him, he's crazy. How can you be from Brooklyn and root for the Yankees? How can we trust a turncoat like that? Gil we need you to mend your evil ways,” says Hoppy. The guys laugh and then head off to various places on the base to keep themselves busy. Gil wonders why crews are getting stacked up here and when they'll ship out to get their plane. He goes back to the barracks and pens a letter home and then one to Elaine.

Gunny is pleased that everyone's weapons are to his satisfaction and Slim joins him topside for a stroll around the crowded deck. “Look at all of these young faces,” says Gunny, “How many do you think we'll be seeing after the next operation?” Slim grunts and says that nobody will even know they're gone are more new faces will replace them and that there's no knowing if they will even be alive to know. “Cheerful as usual, aren't you?” says Gunny.

Uman fell and the Russians are driving towards the Bug and Dnieper rivers.

Combat

An IJN MSW encountered a mine field at Amboina and immediately commenced sweeping it.

Pagan was pounded by Ed's Old Gals. The airfield was lightly damaged, the port moderately, a great many secondary explosions were observed and troop losses were placed at light.

The Burma Area Army was attacked by 64 P-38Js and 42 Thunderbolt IIs. Japanese casualties were thought to have been very heavy. Very light casualties were reported as having been inflicted on the Japanese by an artillery bombardment.

Rangoon was bombed by 101 X Liberator VI, of which 1 was downed and 16 others were damaged by the AA fire. The airfield was very heavily damaged, a lone secondary explosion was seen and the personnel had very heavy losses. 15 minutes later 31 X B-24J appeared and the flak damaged 6 of them. The airfield had additional light damage and casualties were moderate.

Kai Island was attacked by 45 X P-38J and 9 X Kittyhawk III. A Lightning was downed and 5 others were hit by ground fire as they hit the airfield for light damage, a sole secondary explosion was observed, an Emily and a Betty were destroyed while casualties were light.

Koepang was hit by 137 X B-24D and 47 X B-24J. A B-24D was shot down and 12 were damaged and 3 B-24Js were shot up. The airfield was very heavily damaged, the port took moderate damage, there were a great many secondary explosions and the troops had very heavy losses.

40 X B-25J under escort by 9 X Spitfire VIII hit the 35th Brigade, at 30,33. 4 of the bombers were damaged by ground fire and the Japanese unit had moderate losses. Allied artillery bombarded the Japanese who had heavy casualties as a result.

The 109th IJNAF Base Force was attacked by 51 X B-25J (2 damaged) and 9 F4U-1D. The troops had moderate losses. Another strike of 21 X P-39D and 8 X F4U-1D roared in and dumped their loads off target. Then 40 X B-25J (1 damaged) and 13 X P-47D appeared and inflicted light losses on the Japanese. 26 SBDs and 11 Corsairs did light damage to the port.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was struck by 12 Helens for no casualties.

Stick enviously watched some of the guys roar off as escorts for an attack while he's got CAP duties today. The mechanics are complaining about the strain on the planes as they're flying so many missions. Stick asked his chief mechanic, “What about us pilots? We're bushed.” The man answered that Stick could eat and sleep on his own, but the planes were keeping him up day and night and that's bushed. Stick apologized to the man and sheepishly headed off to the mess tent.

Slim joins a crap game and before he knows it he's ahead by $200. This is crazy, he thinks, what am I going to do with all of this money? Where the hell could I ever spend it where I'm going? One of the guys from the squad tells him that the cash will come in handy when dealing with the Sea Bees. “They'll wheel and deal and they get their hands on all sorts of good stuff.”

Pete took Sylvia to see the doctor today and all is well. She's big as a house and Pete complains that there's barely room for him in the bed. They share a laugh about that and she wonders if she'll ever get her old shape back. If she doesn't will Pete still want her?

The mine field at Amboina is being swept by an MSW.

Koepang was attacked by 30 X B-24J, 8 damaged by flak, and the port was lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions and the troops had light losses. Another raid by 12 X PB4Y and 5 of them were damaged by the ground fire as they did light damage to the port. A single secondary explosion was noted and Japanese personnel losses were light.

Lunga was swept by 24 X P-38J and the Japanese offered up 5 X Zeke, 32 X Jack and 4 X Tony in opposition. A Zeke was shot down, a Jack was splashed (another damaged) and 2 X Tony were destroyed. 2 Lightnings went down and the others headed for home after the brief, but intense fighting.

The IJA 35th Brigade was jumped by 30 Thunderbolt IIs and 10 Spitfire VIIIs. A Thunderbolt went down and 3 more were damaged by the AA. The Japanese had light casualties.

Pagan was hit by 26 SBDs and 9 Corsairs for light port damage and a secondary explosion.

Jaluit was raided by 42 X B-25J and 45 X P-38J. There were 2 secondary explosions, though the port was not touched.

An Allied bombardment attack about 70 miles N of Rangoon resulted in moderate Japanese casualties.

An Allied attack about 28 miles NE of Myitkyina cost the Allies nary a scratch while the Japanese had extremely heavy losses, eliminating the last Japanese troop concentration in the area. Now a brief rest, refit, some replacements and on to Rangoon for the troops.

The British are considering an amphibious move to isolate Rangoon and to help speed the process of taking it. Once that is accomplished a repeat of the Japanese movement of December 1941 is a possibility. The question is can it be pulled off with the limited assets of the RN? There are plenty of cargo ships, but no APs available.

Combat

The mine field at Amboina continues to be swept by the MSW.

Rangoon was raided by 27 X B-24J and the ground fire damaged 9 of them as they inflicted moderate damage to the airfield, and light casualties on the troops.

Kai Island was targeted by 71 X P-47D (1 downed and 8 damaged) and 18 X Kittyhawk III. The airfield was very lightly damaged, 2 X Betty were charred wrecks, an Emily was also destroyed and casualties were light.

Ulithi was attacked by 47 Bettys, 62 Zekes, 36 Georges and 44 Jacks. The Americans threw 21 X F6F, 19 X F4U-1D and 18 X P-47D at them. In the mayhem of the battle 4 Bettys were shot down (8 damaged), 42 X Zeke were flamed, 22 X George went down and 23 X Jack were destroyed at the cost of 10 Hellcats (1 damaged), 5 Corsairs and 4 Thunderbolts (4 damaged) destroyed. The Bettys unloaded their bombs and didn't hit anything but sand and water.

The IJA 34th Ind. Mixed Brigade, about 70 miles N Rangoon, was pounced on by 27 X Thunderbolt II and 8 Spitfire VIII. AA killed a Thunderbolt and damaged 6 others while the unit had light losses. Allied artillery inflicted very heavy casualties on the Japanese troops in the afternoon.

The 109th IJNAF Base Force, on Pagan, was hit by 32 X B-25J and 11 X F4U-1D, 3 Mitchells were damaged by flak and they did no damage as the target was missed by all of the bombs. 25 SBDs and 14 Corsairs attacked, but they too were off target.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was struck by 12 Helens for light losses.

Jaluit was raided by 47 X B-25J and 43 X P-38J. Both sides had no losses or any damage.

Stick lands and excitedly tells anyone who'll listen that he's finally been in real air to air combat. He sheepishly admits that he didn't get a kill, but then again he's in one piece and ready to go again. “I tell ya there were Jap planes falling like leaves from the trees in the fall. Our boys just knocked the stuffing out of 'em.” It's true as the gun camera film is developed and examined combined with the debriefings that the Hellcats, Corsairs and Thunderbolts went through the Japanese planes like a hot knife through butter. If only more American planes had been available the Bettys could've been ravaged too. The pilots have a new respect for their Japanese adversaries now that they've seen how fanatically they are willing to defend the bombers. Later in his tent one of the guys remarks that Stick is a wily combat vet now with 2 air to air engagements under his belt. “Yeah, but the first one doesn't really count because the Japs only had a few planes on the raid. This one was a real wild ride up there and the funny thing was that it seemed to be in slow motion for me.” The guys look at him and think to themselves how fast the action was and here's Stick saying the opposite.

Allied troops begin to embark at Chandpur bound for Moulmein in an attempt to isolate the Japanese still in Burma and eliminate their retreat routes. If this comes off as planned the Allies will have Rangoon sooner than expected and then supplies will be able to flow through Rangoon's port.

A raid on Palau's airfield and port is planned for tomorrow as LBA and CVs will lend their muscle to the operation. The Japanese air threat from that base will not be tolerated and if need be an invasion will be conducted, though that is not in the immediate CENPAC plan.

SWPAC keeps screaming for additional lift capacity and naval support so that they may conduct operations. Washington has a huge navy, but it can't be everywhere at once so SWPAC, SOPAC and even the NOPAC will have to stand in line as the focus will continue to be in the CENPAC area as the gains are giving high rewards and the Japanese defenses have proven to be weaker here than expected.

Kherson fell to the Soviets.

Combat

An IJN sub attack, mid ocean, resulted in the TK Elizabeth Kellogg being hit with 3 fish. The escorts pounded the Japanese sub in return and got credit for a kill when oil, debris and bodies were spotted.

A naval bombardment of Pagan caused light damage to the airfield, moderate damage to the port, some secondary explosions and heavy casualties. Then the 109th IJNAF Base Force was hit by 31 Mitchells and 9 Corsairs and it had light casualties. A Mitchell was destroyed in the attack. Another 36 X B-25J appeared and 1 was damaged by the ground fire as they inflicted light losses on the 109th IJNAF Base Force.

Tavoy was swept by 21 X P-38J and 11 X George met them. 4 of the Georges were downed before they turned tail and ran.

Rangoon was bombed by 121 Liberator VIs and the airfield was heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were very heavy. ! bomber was claimed by the AA fire while 12 others were damaged. Then 24 B-24Js showed up and flak damaged 6 of them while they added light damage to the airfield and caused light losses to the troops.

Palau was under a CAP of 9 Zekes, 3 Georges and 6 Jacks when 35 B-24Js and 11 F4U-1Ds appeared. 2 Zekes were shot down (3 damaged), a George was splashed (1 damaged) and 2 Jacks went down (1 damaged) in the swirling dogfights. The Americans sustained 4 X B-24J destroyed (23 damaged) and 3 Corsairs were killed (2 damaged) by the fighters and flak. The airfield was lightly damaged, a secondary explosion was claimed and a Frances and a Kate were destroyed. Palau's diminished CAP of 6 Zekes and 6 Jacks tried to fend off a strike of 100 SBDs (2 downed, 5 damaged), 21 SB2Cs (5 damaged), 71 TBFs (2 splashed, 5 damaged), 36 X TBMs (2 shot down, 4 damaged), 9 Thunderbolts and 23 Hellcats (1 killed). When the final tally was figured out the Japanese had suffered 4 Zekes, 5 Jacks, 5 Bettys, 2 |Georges and 2 Frances destroyed, light damage to the airfield, moderate damage to the port, a large number of secondary explosions and heavy troop losses.

The IJA 56th Brigade, about 70 miles N of Rangoon, was struck by 22 X Thunderbolt II (1 damaged) and 8 X Spitfire VIII. The unit had light losses. Nearby the IJA 30th Division got the attention of 31 X B-25J (5 damaged), 12 X Thunderbolt II (1 downed, 1 damaged) and 9 X Spitfire VIII. The unit had heavy losses. The 144th IJA Base Force was hit by 13 X B-25J (1 damaged), 3 X Thunderbolt II (1 damaged) and 3 X Spitfire VIII. The unit escaped any harm as the planes missed. A Japanese artillery bombardment resulted in very light Allied losses. The Allies responded with a barrage of their own and caused light Japanese casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was once again visited by Helens, this time 7 of them, and had light casualties.

The Japanese attacked the Allied TF 17 miles SE of Ulithi with 16 Zekes, 9 Georges, 10 Jacks, 19 Bettys and 15 Frances, but they ran into a CAP of 166 Hellcats who tore into their formations and tore through them like it was a drill. The Japanese were ravaged to the tune of 16 lost Zekes, 9 Georges shot down, 10 Jacks destroyed, 16 Bettys killed and 11 Frances splashed. This was done at the cost of 2 downed Hellcats and 19 others suffering damage. No ships were ever under threat of attack.

The American ships near Ulithi were attacked by 2 Zekes, 2 Georges, 2 Jacks and 9 Bettys. The Americans had 18 X FM-2, 34 X F6F, 4 X F4U-1D and 5 X P-47D on station to intercept. All of the Japanese fighters were shot down and 2 Bettys were splashed while another was damaged. The surviving Bettys dumped their loads and ran. None of the American planes were hurt. Then 3 unsuspecting Bettys arrived only to be greeted by a reinforced CAP. 2 of the Japanese planes were destroyed and the lone survivor ran.

Stick was in the middle of the mayhem over Ulithi and survived to fight another day. He had no kills, but he thinks that it'll come. For now he's content to be a dutiful wing man. He's shocked when he realizes how many men and planes need replacing after the past couple of days. In the Flying Deuces operations tent there are 7 new pilots. “They look like babies,” one of the men says as they walk by the new guys as if they don't even exist. Stick never thought that combat would be like this and he thinks, we're the ones kicking butt and it's this dangerous. There are now 6 pilots in the squadron with at least 1 confirmed kill and 2nd LT Glass is an ace with 6 kills.

Gil and the rest of the Lucky 11 are bored out of their minds as they have finished their training and are awaiting orders to move out. “By the time they even remember that we exist the war will be over,” says Brownie. One of the other guys says that they should get so lucky. If it weren't for the lousy chow and mail call the only distractions are gambling and drinking. Of course there are the ladies of the evening that seem to gravitate to the areas surrounding military installations too. Gil can't believe that some of the guys seem to live for visits to the brothels.

The SS Tang tried an attack on 2 X CVE and 4 X DD, but the DDs relentlessly hunted the sub and finally managed to pin down her location and the depth charges then rained down. As if the situation wasn't bad enough 2 X PC appeared and they brutalized the Tang causing the sub's demise.

The SS Skate successfully attacked an AK, hitting it with a fish.

Lautem was bombed by 142 B-24Ds and they heavily damaged the airfield, caused many secondary explosions and heavy losses to the ground personnel. 15 of the bombers were damaged by flak. Later in the day 143 X B-25J, 24 X Kittyhawk III and 18 X P-40N attacked and 1 Mitchell went down and 18 more suffered varying degrees of damage. Later 47 B-25Js showed up and they also had 2 of their number damaged as again the Japanese had light losses. The port was moderately damaged, many secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were light.

The IJA 30th Division was pounced on by 25 X Thunderbolt II and 7 X Spitfire VIII. 6 of the Thunderbolts were damaged and the Japanese had negligible losses. The Japanese lobbed artillery shells at the Allied troops causing extremely light casualties. The Allies replied and inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese.

The 109th IJNAF Base Force, on Pagan, was the object of attention for 43 X B-25J and 10 X F4U-1D. 2 Mitchells were damaged in the raid and the Japanese had light casualties. Pagan was then struck by 24 X SBD (1 damaged) and 11 X F4U-1D. The raid failed to do any damage except to some coral.

Palau was attacked by 12 X SBD (1 downed, 3 damaged) and 12 X P-47D. They did very light damage to the airfield, destroyed a Frances and inflicted very light casualties on the personnel.

Stick had the day off to get a bit of rest as the Flying Deuces are running short of serviceable planes despite the mechanics best efforts. He just lazed around his tent and had a nice nap in the afternoon. If somebody had told him that he could sleep through the roar of planes and construction projects he would have laughed them off. Now the reality is that he could sleep on a bed of nails and he automatically can block out the noises around him.

Pete and Sylvia had their usual busy day at the hotel and Pete barely managed to squeeze in his tea and newspaper. The mysterious agents continue to come and go with the money rolling in with a monthly payment conveyed to them by Mr. Doe. Pete reminds himself that the next time he sees John that he should ask about the Pirates. He probably won't learn anything about them, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Stuttgart was hit by 863 bombers and 36 of them were lost.

Today started an Allied attack on Monte Casino that will last through tomorrow.

Allied troops landing on Pagan sustained heavy casualties. The 109th IJNAF Base Force was attacked by 27 X B-25J and 15 X F4U-1D. A Mitchell was damaged and the LCU had moderate losses. Then another 41 B-25Js struck inflicting light casualties on the Japanese. At almost the same time 22 X SBD and 11 X F4U-1D attacked, causing very light losses.

The SS Apogon, 168 miles W of the Bonin Group, had the good fortune to discover an unescorted AP loaded with troops. The sub hit the vessel with 2 torpedoes and observed men going over the side to escape the fires.

Lautem was bombed by 35 X B-24J and AA fire downed 1 and damaged 14 more as the airfield was lightly damaged. A lone secondary explosion was seen and it was believed that Japanese casualties were light.

The IJA 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade was bombed and strafed by 23 X Thunderbolt II and 8 X Spitfire VIII. 3 Thunderbolts were damaged and the Japanese were unharmed.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 7 Helens and had very light losses.

6 X George were on patrol over Tavoy when they were jumped by 24 X P-38J. The Japanese lost 2 planes and the others ran.

Palau was pounded by 84 X SBD (11 damaged), 23 X SB2C (1 damaged), 69 X TBF (7 damaged), 18 X TBM (1 damaged) and 14 X F6F. The airfield and port were moderately damaged, there were many secondary explosions, 3 X Betty and 2 X Frances were trashed and ground personnel had moderate casualties.

A Japanese bombardment about 70 miles N of Rangoon resulted in very light Allied losses. The Allies responded in kind and caused very heavy Japanese casualties.

Gil is the first of the men from the Lucky 11 to enter the office and when he leaves it's with a huge grin on his face. “We're getting leave before we get our plane,” he announces and all of the guys are smiling now. He heads off to the barracks to ready himself to go. He's got a month to himself before having to report to Mather Field (Muroc) where the crew will reform and get their aircraft. He heads off to collect the pay that is due him and then it'll be some lunch and then catching a bus. He can't believe how excited he is. He plans to stop in Pittsburgh and then head to New York. After visiting his family in Brooklyn he'll stop in Pittsburgh again before the Army Air Corps takes control of his life once more.

The outlook in Burma continues to please Churchill, but some of the generals warn him that if the Japanese throw more troops at their advance things could change very quickly. Rangoon is the key for now as without it supplying the troops will become an impossible nightmare.

FDR reads the report and is pleased that since he demanded a faster tempo to the war things have proceeded quite well. Once Pagan falls all eyes will turn on Iwo Jima and Bonin. If that goes off as planned then Tori Shima will be attacked. In the meantime Ulithi is the key towards pushing to cut the Japanese from the SRA.

At Pentonville Prison Oswald Job was hung for spying.

The SS Grampus, 13 miles NE of Kavieng, stumbled upon a lone AK and hit her helpless target with 3 torpedoes and 5 times from the deck gun. The AK was gone in minutes after being subjected to catastrophic damage.

The 103rd IJNAF Base Force, on Yap, was attacked by 21 X P-39D and 8 X P-47D. Both sides had no losses.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was struck by 5 Helens and there were no casualties.

The Japanese shipping near Kwajalein was attacked by 6 X PB4Y (2 downed, 2 damaged) and 9 Zekes (1 damaged) tried to fend them off. An AP was hit by a bomb and troops were forced to jump into the water and swim to shore. Another 3 PB4Ys showed up and the CAP damaged 1 of them as they targeted and missed an AK.

Palau was raided by 86 SBDs (1 shot down, 2 damaged), 23 SB2Cs, 77 TBFs (1 splashed, 6 damaged), 73 TBMs (3 damaged), 8 P-47Ds, 15 F6Fs and 10 F4U-1Ds. The airfield was moderately damaged, the port lightly, many secondary explosions were reported, a Betty was burning and the troops had heavy casualties.

The SS Tinosa, was attacked by 3 DDs, 3 PGs and 3 PCs about 85 miles S of Sakashima.

The Japanese lobbed some shells at the Allied troops located 69 N Rangoon, causing heavy losses and Allied big guns replied dealing out heavy casualties on the Japanese.

The Allied commanders have decided that in order to gain a foothold in PNG they must take and hold Merauke and Thursday Island before any attempt on Port Moresby is made. With the recent gains in the CENPAC area it's expected that the Japanese reaction will be to weaken their outer defenses to try and solidify the inner ring of bases. Burma, with all of it's promise remains a sideshow in the planning that the sole purpose is to tie down as many Japanese troops as possible without having to expend large amount of assets.

Life on the transport is a boring existence and Slim wonders how anyone could ever join the Navy and then serve on a ship. “If I could think of anything worse to do with my time it would have to be combat,” he says. A couple of guys who have yet to see any fighting are surprised to hear this. “Wait,” Slim says, “You'll find out soon enough. You'll want a warm dry place to sleep without noise, but there won't be more than a fitful nap for you. The food is old, cold and usually wet because somebody up there hates us Marines. Did I mention that your hole fills nicely with rain water? A Marine is taught to keep himself clean, but just wait and see how fast and how dirty you'll get. A shower will be pure heaven, if you live long enough to get that lucky. The list goes on and on.” Gunny pokes Slim and tells him to stop trying to scare the lads.

Gil took forever to catch a bus and then the damned thing broke down in the middle of nowhere. It's fixed now and they're moving, but each delay keeps him from reaching his destination and costs him time spent there. He sighs and knows that there's nothing he can do about it so he settles into his seat and falls asleep.

Sam is tending to his gear when a plane come roaring in so low over his squad's position that they all dive for cover. Some pilot having a bit of fun at his expense, nice. It's hard enough to find a little corner of the world where you can hear yourself think and relax a bit and then this stuff happens.

The SS Tarpon is on another one of the seemingly endless patrols that they do in the Solomons area. The scuttlebutt is that the Japanese are pulling out of the area and if this is true then hunting should be bountiful. Time will tell.

The SS Trespasser, 69 miles N of Medan, stalked a lone AP and failed to get into a favorable attack position.

The SS Seadragon, near Johore Bahru, was attacked by 2 PGs and 4 PCs. Having sustained light systems damage and moderate flooding she will now make for Diamond Harbor.

The SS Albacore, 73 miles E of Shimizu, was located by 5 DDs, but they failed to get a firm fix on the sub.

The SS Tarpon, 11 miles S of Buka, attacked a heavily escorted AK. She hit her target with a torpedo and then underwent a rough time of it from the escorts.

Tavoy was swept by 22 X P-38J. They spotted and attacked 5 Georges, bring down 2 of them.

Rangoon was bombed by 118 X Liberator VI and 62 X B-25J. 9 of the former and 1 of the later were damaged by AA. The airfield was heavily damaged as was the port. There were some secondary explosions and troop losses were heavy. Then 38 X B-24J appeared and the flak damaged 6 of them while they unloaded on the port doing moderate damage to it. A sole secondary explosion was seen and the personnel had moderate casualties.

Palau's airfield was raided by 37 X B-24J and ground fire brought down 1 of them and damaged 5 others. The airfield had moderately heavy damage, a couple of secondary explosions were reported and extremely light casualties were experienced by the Japanese. In the afternoon 12 X SBD (1 destroyed, 3 damaged) and 12 X F4U-1D did very light damage to the airfield and very light troop losses.

Kwajalein was swept by 24 X P-47D and the CAP of 10 Zekes gave battle and half of them were shot down while a Thunderbolt was damaged.

The 56th Brigade, 68 miles N Rangoon, was bombed and strafed by 9 Thunderbolt IIs. Both sides had no losses. Artillery exchanges throughout the day resulted in negligible Allied losses and heavy losses for the Japanese. The IJA 6th Tank Regiment, nearby, was jumped by 72 X P-38J. 2 planes were shot down and 4 more suffered damage as the Japanese unit sustained moderate losses.

The 103rd IJNAF Base Force on Yap was attacked by 21 X P-39D, 13 X P-47D and 11 X F4U-1D. The unit had light casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 10 Helens for extremely light losses.

Stick is tired, having had a busy day flying as an escort on 2 missions today. He's now officially flown 18 missions, not counting countless CAPs, and he has no kills yet. The Japanese seem to have given up on trying to raid into this area, for now.

After a meeting of his officers Bill is content to know that there are no problems that he needs to attend to. Having good officers is a luxury and during wartime almost unheard of. He returns to his cabin to attend to some paperwork and his mind drifts off wondering when Helena will be getting her upgrade and if he'll get some leave.

Gil, though he's spent plenty of time sleeping, is feeling sore and exhausted. The bus ride was awful and then the wait for a train seemed to take forever. Now he's sitting in a Pullman that's packed with boisterous servicemen. He's been asked more times than he can count if he wants to join a card game or shoot craps. He tries to get sleep, but it's difficult even for him. He takes some comfort knowing that he's moving eastwards towards Elaine and home.

Hitler ordered that Hungary be occupied to insure it's continued support of the Axis.

Adolph Eichmann arrived in Hungary. That country's 750,000 Jews who have been untouched until now are facing mass deportation to the camps.

An IJN PC encountered a mine field at Sorong and commenced sweeping it.

The SS KX, near Amboina, had just completed sowing her load of mines when along came a lone MSW. The Dutch sub proceeded to hit her unsuspecting victim with a torpedo, sinking it, and then the sub retired.

The SS Stingray, near Sorong, struck a heavily escorted TK with 2 fish and then underwent a horrific depth charging. Luckily for the sub the attackers weren't very accurate and Stingray glided away to continue her patrol.

Tavoy was swept by 24 X P-38J and they jumped 3 unsuspecting Georges, killing 2. The third Japanese plane ran and the Lightnings didn't bother giving chase.

Rangoon was bombed by 104 Liberator VIs and 54 B-25Js. A Liberator was shot down and 7 more were damaged while 5 Mitchells were damaged by the flak. The airfield was dealt extremely heavy damage, the port was lightly hit, there were some secondary explosions and personnel losses were set at heavy. Then came 23 B-24Js, 3 of which were damaged. They dealt additional moderate damage to the port and inflicted light casualties.

Koepang's port was raided by 31 X B-24J (11 damaged). The planes did light damage to their target, caused a few secondary explosions and inflicted light losses on the troops. Before the dust had settled 141 B-24Ds devastated the airfield, caused many secondary explosions and heavy casualties. 7 of the bombers were damaged by the AA fire.

Dili was struck by 32 X B-24J (6 damaged) and the airfield had light damage and casualties were also light.

Lautem was targeted by 139 X B-25J (3 destroyed, 23 damaged), 18 X Kittyhawk III, 21 X P-40N and 60 X P-38J. The port was lightly damaged, a great many secondary explosions were seen and the troops sustained heavy losses.

Palau's airfield was hit by 37 X B-24J. The flak damaged 8 of the planes. The target was moderately damaged, a secondary explosion was seen and troop losses were placed at very light. 2 SBDs appeared and dropped their bombs off target.

Yap got the attention of 21 Airacobras and 11 Thunderbolts who did very light damage to the airfield.

Kwajalein was swept by 21 X P-47D and they were challenged by 5 Zekes. 4 of the Japanese planes were splashed and the Jugs headed home unscathed.

Gili Gili was attacked by 48 X B-17E (4 shot down, 5 damaged), 43 X B-24D (13 destroyed, 12 damaged) and 93 X B-24J (10 downed, 27 damaged). The Japanese met the bombers with 8 Jacks and 26 Tonys. Between the bomber's defensive fire and bombs the Japanese suffered 3 damaged Jacks, 3 Tonys splashed (20 damaged), 8 Bettys destroyed and 2 Dinahs trashed. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were very light.

The IJA 35th Brigade, 68 miles N of Rangoon, was visited by 10 X Thunderbolt II and 7 Spitfire VIII. 7 of the Thunderbolts were damaged and the unit had extremely light casualties. Not far away the IJA 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade was struck by 53 X P-38J (7 damaged) for heavy losses. The artillery exchanges cost the Allied troops light losses and the Japanese also had a similar of casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was visited by 7 Helens who missed the mark.

With Allied troops poised unopposed less than 40 miles from Rangoon the troops to the north will now commence their attack on the large blocking force that they face. More troops continue to move into the line and the surprise for the Japanese will be the landings that will commence in 2 days at Moulmein by a very large combat force.

Dave is trying to get a generator to work. “Normally,” he says to the vehicle's owner, “I would just put a new one in. What is normal nowadays? I spend more time trying to fix broken stuff than anything else. How many times have we rebuilt this thing? 2 or 3 times? If I can get it working again it'll be a miracle.” With that Dave takes a break and has a Coke.

Elaine has made some plans with her friends to go to a nearby lake in June. It could still be chilly then, but a getaway from reality would be great. She doesn't appreciate the guys that try to meet her whenever she goes downtown. She finds herself missing Gil's company more than she ever expected to.

Gunny is sitting topside enjoying a smoke while he watches a drill being run by the ship's gunners. He decides that he'd rather trust his skin to his boys than to rely on the swabbies. Slim spots him and asks, “Mind if I join you? Did you see how long it takes these guys to get ready for a fight? If my squad took that long you'd kill us and save the Japs the trouble.” Gunny laughs and offers Slim a butt. The 2 men are lost in their thoughts and before long Slim is snoring.

Vinnitsa was taken by the Russians.

Combat

The SS Snapper, in the Malacca Strait, located a BB and 5 DDs. She thought the BB to be the Hyuga, which she hit with a fish causing fires.

Rangoon was bombed by 104 Liberator VIs and the AA fire damaged 21 of them as they hit the port heavily, caused a great many secondary explosions and inflicted moderate losses on personnel there. Immediately after the first strike finished 21 X B-24J appeared and flak knocked down 1 and damaged 6 more as they too hit the port. Damage was light as were troop losses.

Yap was hit by 23 X P-39D and 13 X P-47D. No planes were hit by the ground fire and the airfield was barely touched.

Port Moresby was swept by 72 X P-38J and the Japanese threw 23 Zekes, 11 Tojos and 14 Tonys at them. 20 Zekes, 11 Tojos and 14 Tonys were shot down while 10 P-38Js were destroyed and 5 others were damaged.

Tulagi's port was raided by 35 X B-24J (5 damaged). The target was lightly damaged, many secondary explosions were claimed and troop losses were very light.

The IJA 56th Brigade was pounded by 29 X B-25J (1 downed, 17 damaged), 8 X Thunderbolt II and 9 X Spitfire VIII for light losses. Later 45 X P-38J attacked at the cost of 1 plane destroyed and 3 damaged. The unit had light losses. An Allied attack gained ground at the cost of very heavy losses while the Japanese had very heavy casualties too. The Japanese troops were forced to retreat towards Moulmein.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 7 Helens who missed the target.

An AP near Kai Island was attacked by 32 X B-25J, 20 X Kittyhawk III, 18 X P-40N and 62 X P-38J. The ship was clobbered by 18 bomb hits, causing her to sink. Later another strike made up of 105 X B-25J (6 damaged), 18 X Kittyhawk III, 20 X P-40N and 56 X P-38J did light damage to the port, caused many secondary explosions and inflicted light troop losses.

Kwajalein was under a CAP of a lone Zeke when 16 P-47Ds appeared. The Japanese pilot ran and the Americans returned to base after loitering for a bit. The Zeke returned to station just in time to greet 5 X PB4Y who attacked an AK, hitting it with a bomb. The Zeke never pressed home an attack and all of the planes headed for home unharmed.

The SS Albacore, about 138 miles E of Kagoshima, was attacked by 4 tin cans and she escaped unharmed. Then 5 PCs appeared and pounded her. She will now make for Seattle to get extensive systems damage repaired.

The landings at Moulmein are set to commence tomorrow, effectively sealing the fate of Rangoon's garrison.

Red sits in his radio shack and listens to some Benny Goodman on the radio, a couple of the crew are lazing around listening too. and Cookie is making tonight's dinner. They all are thinking of far of places that they haven't seen for a long time. Lucky is off on one of his hunting expeditions when he charges into the galley with a tail hanging from his mouth. Cookie has trained the dog to bring his catches to the galley and Cookie rewards him with something to eat. The dog has gained a bit of weight, but the rodent population isn't exploding.

Gil yawns as he watches the vast expanse of the Great Plains roll endlessly by his window. The train is cramped and dirty, but at least the noise isn't to bad. The rhythm of the train clattering along the tracks lulls him off to sleep again.

Pete has decided to play an April Fools Day prank on Milt and tells Sylvia of his plans. “You really are evil,” she laughs. “You would do that to the poor man? Why it'll takes years off of his life at just the thought.” She's laughing hysterically and admits that she can't wait to see the plan put into action. Some of the other pub regulars will be needed to help carry it of, but Pete feels that the few he'll need will be more than willing to participate.

FDR listens and asks about the new long range fighter that will join the fight later this year. He looks at a map of the Pacific and asks, “Would this dot provide a nice place to tweak the Japanese noses from?” Admiral King leans over the map and says that Tori Shima would do nicely. “Then I assume we'll be taking it?” the President asks. The reply is that after Pagan Island the weight of CENPAC will be focused on Iwo Jima, Bonin and ultimately Tori Shima.

Combat

The SS Searaven, in the Malacca Straits, spotted 4 DDs that were hunting and she hit 1 of them with a torpedo. The other 3 tin cans then proceeded to put the sub through a living hell. The sub finally evaded her tormentors after having sustained moderate systems damage and flooding. She will now make for Diamond Harbor.

Allied troops were unloading over the beach at Moulmein and have had very heavy losses. 10 X Helen, 17 X Lily, 3 X Frances, 3 X George and 7 X Jack attacked the Allied shipping, which was being protected by 9 P-38Js. 4 Helens, 3 Lilys, a George and 3 Jacks were shot down while 3 P-38Js were damaged. The AK Solviken was hit by a fish. 3 X Helen and 3 X Lily then attacked and were met by 3 X Corsair IV (1 damaged) and 9 X P-38J (3 damaged). 2 of the Helens went down and no ships were hit.

The Allied TF 71 miles S of Moulmein was attacked by 3 Helens, 7 Georges and 5 Jacks. 7 Hellcat IIs and 12 Corsair IVs engaged destroying all of the Japanese planes except for 2 Georges at the cost of a damaged Hellcat. No ships were harmed. Then 12 X Lily came on and the CAP destroyed 7 of them. A Hellcat was damaged and all of the ships were once more safe.

Yap had it's airstrip lightly damaged by 24 Airacobras and 15 Thunderbolts.

Lunga was swept by 24 X P-38J and there were 4 Zekes and 7 Jacks on hand to greet them. A Zeke and 2 Jacks went down at no cost to the Lightnings.

The 35th Brigade, about 21 miles N of Rangoon, was struck by 27 P-38J (2 damaged) for moderate casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 10 X Helen and had no losses.

Kai Island was raided by 97 X B-25J (3 damaged), 18 X Kittyhawk III, 21 X P-40N and 58 X P-38J who inflicted light damage on the port, caused a great many secondary explosions and light casualties.

The Japanese AK near Kwajalein was attacked by 7 X PB4Y and 8 X P-47D. A lone Zeke was aloft, but he didn't fight. The planes missed their target and headed home unharmed.

An Allied attack 55 miles N of Rangoon forced the Japanese to retreat towards Rahaeng and inflicted very heavy losses on them. The attackers sustained extremely heavy casualties.

Gunny is lying in his bunk thinking about that kid he met long ago in Honolulu. He wonders how he's doing and where he is. This war has disrupted so many lives and there's no end in sight. He sighs and knows that the Marines were made for ending this. He just wonders how much more needs to be paid before it's over. The steady throb of the ship's engines lulls him off to sleep.

Gil is now in Springfield, Missouri awaiting a train to continue his journey on. It was supposed to arrive an hour ago, but he' enjoying the time stretching his legs. A some hot of coffee, scrambled eggs and a corn muffin was a welcomed breakfast for an empty stomach. He wonders how much longer it will take to get to Pittsburgh when he's jolted back to the here and now by an announcement of his train's pending departure. He grabs his bag and heads for the platform, excited to be on his way once more.

Sandy is looking forward to Spring and the explosion of life that comes with it. It's her favorite time of year and the thought of hiking excites her. She needs something to keep her busy and her mind off of missing Bill.

“So when are you going to enlist these dastardly cohorts of yours?” asks Sylvia. Pete tells her that the night before will do nicely. She giggles, cuddles into him and they drift off to sleep.

The frontal attacks on Cassino were halted.

Combat

Allied troops continue unloading over beach at Moulmein sustaining very heavy losses. An Allied attack resulted in both sides having heavy losses and the fortifications were able to hold. The British commanders are concerned that the Japanese managed to slip troops into Moulmein before the assault. What tipped them off or were these troops just moving forward to Rangoon? The popular thought is that Rangoon will fall and that the Japanese will be pushed out of Moulmein too.

The SS Growler, 28 miles SE of Kunashiri Jima, tried to attack a DD and failed. Then the DD tried and failed to attack the Growler.

A pair of IJN MSWs encountered a mine field at Muntok and started sweeping it.

The SS S-31, 79 miles NW of Kupang, had the good fortune to detect an AP on her radar. In the predawn she hit the target a couple of times with the deck gun and with a torpedo.

Rangoon was bombed by 118 X Liberator VI, 16 of which were damaged by ground fire. The port was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were heavy.

Yap's airfield was attacked by 24 X P-39D and 15 X P-47D. The damage done was very light, though there were a pair of secondary explosions seen.

Tulagi was raided by 38 X B-24J and AA fire damaged 7 of them. No damage was done to the target as cloud cover was heavy.

The IJA 49th Division, 18 miles N of Rangoon, was hit by 45 X B-25J (13 damaged) for moderate losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had light casualties at the hands of 10 X Helen.

Kai Island was the target of 87 X B-25J (1 downed, 8 damaged), 17 X Kittyhawk III, 18 X P-40N and 61 X P-38J. The port had light damage, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were placed at moderate.

With 19 combat missions flown and still no kill Stick wonders if that's going to be the story for the entire war. He still takes pride in the fact that he's a prized wing man and that he flew on the wing of the squadron CO today. The ground crew loves him also. He did some wheeling and dealing and then gave a bottle of whiskey to the guys working on his plane yesterday. Before he took off today the crew chief told him that they had waxed his plane and that this should give him a bit more speed. It pays to be nice to those who take care of what you rely on and he knows that these mechanics are the ones his life depends on. They're a great bunch of guys too. He's just glad that he doesn't have to work so hard for so many long hours.

Gil's train pulled into St. Louis with about 25 minutes to spare before another left for Chicago. He got on it and after Chicago will be Pittsburgh. It's a huge country and travel isn't the easiest thing with the war on, but he's managing to cover the miles. The closer he gets to his destination the more excited he becomes. This excitement is making it harder and harder for him to sleep so he just stares out of the window, letting his mind drift. Finally the monotony and exhaustion of the travel wins and he dozes off.

Eugene Morosi works at Todd Shipyards and as a result has a free pass on getting drafted. His job is to work on machinery and he has more to do than he could ever imagine. The shifts are long and he works 6 days a week, making more money than he ever imagined. His uncle was right about getting a job here. When he was attending Lincoln High School he never imagined working on ships and only dreamed about having more money than he could spend. The ship he's working on is getting a new engine. The only problem they're having is that in order to get it into the engine room they have to cut the hull. His uncle tells them to do it and not to worry about it as they can just weld it all together later.

Combat

Allied landings at Moulmein continue and coastal guns hit a pair of CAs, an MSW and a DD. Allied troop losses are heavy. A Japanese bombardment attack resulted in moderate Allied casualties. Then an Allied assault gained nothing, inflicting heavy losses on the Japanese and very heavy losses were sustained by the attackers.

The SS Surf, 11 miles S of Singapore, was attacked by 5 DDS, but she escaped unharmed after a couple of tense hours.

Rangoon was bombed by 100 Liberator VIs and the flak killed 2 and damaged 9 of them. The port was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were heavy.

Yap was raided by 24 X P-39D and 15 X P-47D. The airstrip was lightly damaged.

Tulagi was raided by 30 X B-24J, of which 4 were damaged by ground fire. The port was lightly damaged and there were some secondary explosions.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was jumped by 3 Helens and no ordinance fell on target.

The USN TF, 27 miles S of Iwo Jima, was attacked by 55 Zekes, 13 Georges, 16 Jacks, 33 Judys, 10 Frances and 4 Lilys. A CAP of 255 Hellcats tore into the Japanese aircraft and destroyed them all long before any ships could be engaged. 13 Hellcats went down and 14 more were damaged in the fight. Another Japanese strike of 15 Zekes, 11 Georges, 5 Jacks and 9 Lilys came on and they met a similar fate at the hands of the 130 Hellcats on CAP. 5 F6Fs were destroyed and 6 were damaged.

With 3 divisions and a brigade in action it was thought that this force could take Moulmein. Now there are doubts as the Japanese have managed to slip in shore guns and a division. What is needed is armor to shake things loose and some will be sent as soon as possible.

Gil managed to get a seat on a train to Pittsburgh, but he'll have to wait until tomorrow to take it. He asks the woman selling the train tickets about where he might get a hotel room. She told him he'll need lots of luck and makes some suggestions. He trudges off and grabs a late lunch and then starts making the rounds in search of a room.

Gene starts his shift helping to set the engine into position and then he begins making the adjustments needed. The hole in the hull looks enormous and he's worried because all of these jobs are on a rush basis and the bosses were never told about it. He shrugs and continues doing his job.

Combat

Allied troops continued unloading over beach at Moulmein, taking light losses. The RN hit with a naval bombardment that caused heavy Japanese losses. The RN's bombardment TF was attacked by 3 Frances and 1 was damaged by AA as the BB Queen Elizabeth was struck by 2 torpedoes. Then 6 Lilys and 3 Helens attacked and 2 of each type were damaged by the flak. An AK took 2 bomb hits. Japanese artillery inflicted heavy Allied losses and the Allies responded inflicting light casualties. The IJA 30th Division was dumped on by 34 X B-24J and the unit had moderate losses. The 5th Indian Division was attacked by 35 X Helen and 11 P-38Js were on hand . 2 of the Helens were damaged as were 2 of the Lightnings. The Indian unit had very light casualties.

A pair of MSWs encountered a mine field at Muntok and started sweeping it.

Rangoon was the target for 94 X Liberator VI (13 damaged) and the port was moderately damaged, a few secondary explosions were seen and Japanese casualties were very heavy.

Palau was swept by 21 Corsairs of the Flying Deuces, but no Japanese planes were aloft.

Yap was hit by 24 X P-39D and 15 X P-47D for light damage to the airfield. 12 X SBD and 14 X P-47D added light damage to the airfield and a secondary explosion was observed.

Kwajalein was swept by 24 P-47Ds, but no resistance was offered.

Lunga had a CAP of 3 Zekes, 30 Jacks and 2 Tonys up when 24 X P-38J arrived. 5 Jacks were splashed and 5 Lightnings also went down and another was damaged.

Tulagi was bombed by 29 X B-24J (4 damaged). The port was lightly hit and casualties were very light.

The IJA 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade, about 18 miles NW of Rahaeng, was visited by 30 Thunderbolt IIs and 7 Spitfire VIIIs. 2 of the Thunderbolts were damaged and the Japanese had light losses.

The RN TF 29 miles S of Moulmein was attacked by 5 X George, 5 X Jack, and 4 X Lily. The CAP of 14 X Hellcat II and 11 Corsair IV downed 4 Georges, 4 Jacks and 3 Lilys while a Corsair was damaged. No ships were hit. Another attack by 3 Zekes, 6 Georges, 3 Jacks, 3 Frances and 3 Helens was attacked by the CAP. The Japanese had 3 Zekes, 3 Georges, 2 Jacks, 2 Frances and a Helen destroyed. Another Helen was damaged while a Hellcat went down and another was damaged. The CVE Battler was struck by 2 fish and the order was passed a couple of hours later to abandon ship as she had moderate systems damage, very heavy flooding and moderate fires blazing. Once the men were taken off she was scuttled.

It is expected that the Queen Elizabeth will survive to fight another day as she limps towards a safe harbor.

“ I tell ya it's my fault,” says Stick. “If you want the see Japanese planes don't take me along. The problem is that the Japs are scared to death of my superior air combat skills and hide when they know I'm coming. Do you really think that anybody could have flown as many combat missions as I have, at my skill level and not have any kills if this weren't true?” The guys are tired from the sweep of Palau, but they are roaring with laughter. “Hey! I'm not joking,” continues Stick as the guys are laughing so hard that some are holding their guts or streaming tears. “If I'm not as good as I say then why am I here? Why have I never lost the guy whose wing I have? Keep laughing. You know that you want to fly with me.” One of the guys says that he doesn't want to fly with Stick as he wants to kill more Japanese planes. This only serves to increase the pandemonium.

Gil loves flying, but he's developing a strong dislike for the trains. A long delay in Toledo, Ohio for some reason and then they finally were rolling again. He's wondering just how much of his leave he'll need to burn up with travel. His thoughts turn to seeing Elaine and then his family. What is really exciting him is that when he returns from leave the Lucky 11 are supposed to get their plane and he supposes that from there they'll be heading off to the war.

Slim lies in his bunk writing a letter home. In it he tells them that they shouldn't worry about him as the food in the Corps has seen him gain weight since he's left home. He also has Gunny watching over him and that's as good as having a guardian angel.

With a week to go Pete is getting itchy to spring his prank on Milt. Sylvia shares his feelings as she can't imagine how he'll react other than as “a volcano erupting.”

The USN is being strained by operational needs, damaged vessels being repaired and ships scheduled for upgrades being backlogged.

Yesterday the Dnieper and Bug Rivers were crossed by the Red Army.

Yesterday London was bombed by 90 He111s and Ju88s. Berlin was hit by 810 Lancasters, of which 72 were lost.

Yesterday FDR issued a statement condemning German and Japanese “crimes against humanity.”

2 Japanese MSWs located and began to clear mines at Palembang.

The SS Tautog, 25 miles S of Salama, spotted and stalked an AP being escorted by 4 PCs. The sub's skipper managed to guide his boat into a position to strike the target with 2 fish, leaving the AP heavily damaged and burning. The PCs frantically tried and failed to locate the Tautog. The sub then stumbled across and unescorted AP in the afternoon and hit it with a torpedo about 13 miles from her earlier attack.

Palau was again swept by the Flying Deuces with 20 planes, but again the Japanese offered up no targets.

Yap's airfield was hit for negligible damage by 23 X P-39D and 14 X P-47D. Then came 13 X SBD and 13 X P-47D to add lightly to the airfield's damage.

Kwajalein was swept by 24 X P-47D and again the Japanese just watched the high flying fighters do their racetrack patterns before they finally departed.

Lunga was swept by 19 X P-38J and they were met by 3 Zekes, 24 Jacks and 2 Tonys. In the furball that followed 3 Lightnings went down and 2 Jacks were splashed.

Tulagi's port was bombed by 23 X B-24J, of which flak damaged 2. The target was lightly damaged and casualties among the troops were extremely light.

The IJA144th IJA Base Force, 29 miles S of Moulmein, was attacked by 28 X Thunderbolt II and 10 X Spitfire VIII. Japanese losses were light.

An Allied artillery bombardment at Moulmein inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese.

Stick has now logged 21 combat missions and with the lack of opposition he's still seeking that elusive 1st kill. “I'm telling you guys that as long as I'm in the sweep the Japs won't oppose us. I'm like having a life insurance policy. If I flew to Tokyo they city would surrender to me after I landed.” Today the guys are throwing things at stick as they laugh.

Palawan is at Guam awaiting her turn to load supplies for what appears to be yet another invasion. Red and Cookie took Lucky for a walk today, but the patrols are heavy and they stopped them from traveling far from the port. The dog wants to hunt the birds, but Red has him on a leash. This is a stroll that left the 3 of them wanting more. Red and Cookie talked about what they will do with their land after the war and Red said, “I don't know about you, but I intend on seeing our investments making us rich. I never want to be involved in a war or have to work hard again in my life.” Cookie agreed and they headed back to the ship.

The USN CVTFs departed the Bonin area in the hope of intercepting the IJN vessel detected heading NE from Palau. Bill informs his officers of what the intended mission is now. The men's faces light up at the thought of some combat. “Don't get to excited because the fly boys will nail whatever the Japanese offer up and we'll just be protecting their CVs for them.” The truth of these words are sobering, but they all know the reality of this war. To have a surface action will be a rarity.

Gil has finally passed through Cleveland and his excitement grows as Pittsburgh gets closer and closer. A short stop in Akron and then Pittsburgh, he thinks. For once Gil finds that he can't sleep.

Invasion troops are being loaded at Wake and will be transferred to Guam, from there to go to their intended targets. These are all support units as the combat troops are already at Guam, save the 2nd Marines who will get there soon.

Kamenets-Podolsk was taken by the Russians.
