Hi all:
I recently started a game against the Japanese AI with Scenario 42, or the Enhanced BB Variant of the AltWashingtonTreaty mod. So far, the game has been going incredibly well, as on turn one, there were thunderstorms over the KB, meaning no PH strike. From there, it just got better for the allies. Force Z sortied to destroy several invasions of Borneo, and surprised a TF composed of four BB's and sunk two in exchange for a destroyer(though Force Z had doubled in size by the time of this engagement). And the allies still got luckier. A Japanese task Force led by the Battleship Haruna found a Royal Navy task force consisting of the Illustrious and the Hermes-and no other ships. however, the Japanese were low on ammountion from previous battles, so the Japanese task forceretreated from the unescorted carrier task force.. The RN repaid the favor by puttting five air launched torpedos into the Haruna.. Add to top it all off, Force Z was chasing after a contact report believed to be crippled battleships, only to discovere that the "battleships" were actually transports. When all was said and done, all transports were at the bottom of the sea, along with 28000 Troops, 200 Guns, and 200 Vehicles. And it's not even 1942 yet.

Granted, I'm doing this on easy difficulty since it's my first game, but still.

Incredible results - how in the world could force Z and some cruisers and DDs take on four BBs and come out ahead? Even if they were tied to a transport group and sitting idle at the moment of attack they usually react pretty fast and have the edge in night fighting.

If you can post the combat details for major actions it helps a lot with getting a feel for what happened. You can add your own observations from the combat replay about critical hits, magazine explosions, engine room hits, etc. that flesh out the effects of the hits counted in the combat report.

I am not familiar with the scenario you are playing - where can I find info on it?

Looks like you are already having fun with the game. When I started my first full campaign against the AI, I started with the assumption that US codebreakers descovered all the details of the Japanese plans on the night of Dec. 6, and therefore were able to take action on turn 1. I sortied every warship I could from PH and ambushed the Japanese carriers with BBs. The AI was hard coded for the PH strike so it struck at an empty base while my surface ships duked it out with his. Sank one CV, BB, one DD and damaged most of the rest of KB before it slipped away. On subsequent turns my cruisers and DDs [four TFs in all] repeatedly intercepted and sank more of the KB and piled up the damage. The DD TFs were great for drawing air attacks which they mostly dodged and they shot down lots of planes too, especially the dreaded Kates. I also used pursuing subs to finish off cripples. I did lose a couple of BBs and CAs but it was well worth it.
A week or so into the game I also had a British/American cruiser/destroyer TF intercept an unescorted Japanese convoy west of Mindanao. All four xAP were sunk and there was an incredible 32,000 IJA casualties. Enemy invasion of the DEI never got off the ground in a big way after that.

Hi BBfanboy,
RE: Force Z-the enemy BB's had been in a running engagement with a TF consisting of the Houston, one CL and 4DDs(which were completely destroyed) so they were already running low on main gun ammo. In addition, the allies picked up the japanese Task Force 9,000 yards before the Japanese figured out where Force Z was. The allies got off a lot of free salvos while the Japanese ran to their guns-in that time one BB was sunk, and another was heavily damaged(later finished off in the fight). Also, with the the Carrier TF and the Haruna, the Haruna was also very low on main gun ammo.

I'm enjoying this game very much so far, though I'm not sure if I'll make it into a full AAR.

Here's a link to it. The starting OOB gives the allies an extra battlecruiser in the DEI, as well as two BB's easily re-routable to the DEI. Also, at PH, there's two more BB's a BC, and the Yorktown. So if the strike had flown, I would have been in bad shape. Right now, every capital ship in PH is on its way to the DEI, so the Japanese need to get by Force Z ASAP to take the DEI.
