Just did a bit of inventory. Some 2850 men of 21st Marine remain on Horn Is or aboard APD's. 503rd PIR will have 6x81 mm squads left, quite a fearsome force. I don't know how long I can dogde Gen. Marshall's calls.

Maybe we can pin down the LYB units on Dobo and add them to the future POW ledger.

I had a bottle of the Balvenie 21 Portwood and a friend's father-in-law found out. I swear the s.o.b. was flying in from CA fortnightly to just stop by on his own... Lesson - Do not be nice to friend's, in laws either.

Bloody hell. Were they trained in Germany?

Good point, Admiral Lord Sir.

Hey, CB, does "IJA 16th" translate into "Totenkopf" or "Das Reich" in Deutsch?

If they racked up a 95 experience level in China, getting to that level must have been really bad...

To get from 85 to 95 experience they had to play "Austrailian Rule Rugby" for six months ... or serve as bouncers at a Honolulu bar.

Dobo/Banda Sea/Timor: We sent in the Red Cross to the POW camp at Dobo with some packages via unarmed PT boat. It's a war crime I tell ya'! I hope the bastards have to go back to Manila to refuel.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Dobo at 83,116, Range 10,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
BB Musashi
CA Ashigara
DD Shirayuki
DD Hatsuyuki
DD Ushio
DD Satsuki
DD Yuzuki

Allied Ships
PT-27, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
PT-123, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
PT-145, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
PT-169, Shell hits 2, and is sunk

One our our retreating DD's, USS Wilson, was hit by a sub torp.

Unloading at Gove went well. JJ had no stomach for another ambush. A jap oiler, Naruto, was accidentally hit by a live torpedo from USS Sturgeon near Koepang. A court of inquiry will be held. Personally, I hope they go easy on the Captain.

Oz: More suppries unroading at Port Headrand. All the B-24's have moved to Alice and some of the B-25's to Merauke. I hope this leaves enough firepower to keep the LYB's suppressed.

Big raid over Darwin today. There is ZERO CAP. The place gets pounded hard. Did JJ just announce they are giving up their position in Oz or was this just an erroneous click????? I had hoped their guard would be down after the fighter losses over Gove yesterday. It worked.

Katherine ground troops also hit pretty good by 13 B-24's from Alice and even some Beauforts from Tennant Creek. If they aren't going to contest in the air over Katheine, then the attack up the trail from Daly might even work. A new squadron of recon P-38's moved to Alice to help.

New and Improved New Hebrides: Efate fell to a shock attack at 71:1 odds after a bombardment by Wichita and 2 DD. 800 LYB's have "paid the last full measure" for the Emperor. I hope he appreciates it. 2 Allied AK's hit by subs. Evidently, we need some ASW assets in the area.

The slaughter of LYB aircraft over India is so shocking as to give Allied piliots pause. To a man, they walked with a heavy gait toward their aircraft this morning, burdened by the loss of so many young men and the roll they had played.....but they all pretty much got over it when the saw the cool new rising sun logos signifying enemy kills painted on the side of their aricraft.

I have a confession to make. I was given a Netflix thingy for Christmas and I accidentally watched Downton Abbey and now I am hooked. I watched all 7 episodes without sleeping*. I am ashamed of myself. Is there anything that can be done?

I tried to repent by watching all 10 episodes of "Famous Dogfights" but I fear the ledger has not been squared.

* I made that part up....about staying up all night.

Are you sure Rooseveldt didn't send him up there to get him out of the [White] house for a while? After all, putting up with Eleanor, Harry and Ernie King must have been vexing!

Don't feel too bad, Cap'n. I too have found myself actually not disliking a number of Victorian / Edwardian Limey-based costume dramas, including the aforementioned Downton Abbey.

I find the best thing to do is to make airs about how much you are sacrificing for the good of your partner's entertainment.

Good: "Oh, all right (sigh), I'll watch Downton Abbey with you...", can be used to further credit your 'brownie point' accounts, thereby opening the door for further spousal 'considerations'.

Bad: "Yipee! Downton Abbey is on! I hope that that middle sister wears that organza dress with the lace cuffs and those white pumps!" will have your partner reconsidering your masculinity.

Oh, by the way, you know that Netflix only has the first season of Downton Abbey, doncha? You'll have to DVR the second season off of your local PBS network.

Or so I hear. From guys like me that are indifferent. HRMMMM...

How about that local football team!

Dios Mio!

Cap, you are so far ahead of your time: practicing 21st Century assymetrical warfare back in 1942!

PT Boats pitted against Battleships? What an innovative strategem! The LYBs must have been totally baffled and confused by such an unprecedented and unconventional technique!

Hey: how come it didn't work out?

It worked as planned! Each of those 18.1" shells + propellant cost more than a PT boat. The idea is to ruin Japan's economy by making it go over budget. Now if we could just get the DDs to waste their very expensive torpedoes on a ship that is too shallow in draft to be hit .... can New York City spare some garbage scows??.

Port Hedrand: Big LYB raid on our AK's unloading suppries. We coulda used a few more F4F's or P-38's. Even so, trading Bettys and their pilots for damaged AK's is an OK bargain. Allied raids at PH net about 200 LYB casualties. The first relief troops are about 4-5 d out. No LYB rand attack. I dont know where the bombers are coming from..either Timor or Wyndham.

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid detected at 40 NM, estimated altitude 9,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 14 minutes

India/Burma: JJ is ticked off after the slaughter over Chittagong last turn. They send in Oscars to sweep and achieve numerical superiority. Even so, it's a draw. We send in some nasty Hudsons over that LYB unit near Kalemyo or Kalyemo or something like that. I think it's in Burma but it might be India or Bhutan or something.

Morning Air attack on Chittagong , at 55,41

***********Aboard SC-751, New York, Dec. 14, 1942(c)*********

O'riley: Say, Norquist, how long you figure we are going to stay here?

Norquist: Chief says until there is a ship big enough to refuel us on the way to the canal.

O'riley: Can't we just take on fuel somewheres along the way?

Norquist: Jeez, O'riley, don't ask so many Goddamned questions. Who do I look like, ******* Admiral King?

O'riley: Man, your are touchy. What say we go fishing on liberty?

Norquist: Fishing? Are you ******* kidding me?

O'riley: No, I mean it. I always wanted to go for Arctic Char.

Norquist: Arctic Char? We got 2 days liberty, pal.

O'riley: No, we could go to Great Slave Lake, it's only about 120 miles away by car.
