i'd sorta scanned some headlines at various web-news sites:
1) tsunami-survivor 'ghost ship' observed drifting, but
2) it's a radioactive Fukushima survivor,
3) some fishing boat claims salvage, then
4) USCG goes medieval on it.

in truth, i never read any of the articles, but i'm assuming they were all about the same vessel, somewhere in Alaskan waters?

* dual reference here, to "Lively up yourself, 'cos reggae's not bad", & to Captain Aubrey's work w/ HMS Lively, his crew loved the great-gun exercise, especially when they had a 'real' target in their sights.

I did read a few articles and apparently we didn't just go Rambo on our on initiative. After international deliberations it was decided that sinking it and allowing it's fuel to evaporate into the sea was preferred over allowing to remain adrift where it might become a hazard to shipping lanes and eventually run aground in a locale that it could pollute. I am certain though that the USCG was more than happy to accommoadate the international communities wishes.

And gunnery results look like all crew took turns with gun..which admittedly I'd allow too, if I was CO.

I'm with you, Mike. I'll bet there was some serious jockeying amongst the crew for some trigger time.

As for the 'marksmanship' complaints-they probably wanted to put as many rounds into it as possible without sinking it immediately. Get that much more training opportunity.

I count about 40 shellholes in her which definitely goes to show that the game is totally borked and it is way to easy to sink PBs.

The IJN...erm...JNSDF gets some back! Hoo-yah-san! Are the shooters, ROK or JNSDF?

Status: offline 		Interesting. I didn't hear about that either. By the way, the S. Korean ship wasn't trying to sink the N. Korean ship. She was just giving a warning shot by shooting across her bow. It was just a wee bit close and they misjudged the speed of the N. Korean ship.

Edit: That's Japanese Coast Guard, not S. Korean.

In the fire service we did the same thing with old houses. We would set them on fire and then put them out, over and over again all day long. Then, when the structure was too damaged to do anymore or we were just exhausted, we would burn it down for the property owner. Once we had a very nice house in the way of a subdivision and the developer of the subdivision wanted to donate a significant amount of money to our department we had a county-wide controlled burn and, being the PIO for our department at the time, I sent out a press release.

Well, a slow news weekend helped I am sure, I had four camera crews and three newspaper reporters show up! One of the reporters was the daughter of a Memphis firefighter and had worn PPE (personal protective equipment) before. We gave her cameraman a quick lesson on wearing PPE and sent them in to get some really great shots. We watched it all weekend on the local news station.

Bottom line - take advantage of any training situation you can get! Can't have enough of it! Go USGC!

Status: offline 		As for the "skipping of rounds" since you want to sink it you need to hit it below the waterline. Si the rounds need to hit the water befer it hits the boat.

That one made the news here. Note that it was the Japanese Coast Guard and it was near Amami Oshima. The Nork vessel had ignored numerous warnings and acted dangerously around the Japanese boat. There was some debate as to whether it was in international waters when the Japanese poked holes in it, but who's quibbling?

It's always good to see someone hitting back at North Korea--it doesn't happen nearly enough.
