an extract from the upcoming novel 'Land of The Giants'...

...Captain Matsuba prowled the bridge of the Satsuma. He was tired but could'nt sleep, as his taskforce had been given the dishonourable task of guarding the invasion forces loading in the harbour. He was not a happy man .

Suddenly Ensign Abe came upto him and saluted. ' There are upto four unidentified craft coming around the headland sir....they are not giving any identification signals.'

Matsuba nodded his appreciation. He looked out through his binoculars and scanned the horizon. Within minutes the four strange ships came round the headland and headed straight for the harbour mouth. They were too close to the minefield.

Suddenly a sheet of flame shot up from one of the ships. It had hit a mine and it was plain to everyone on the bridge that they were not Japanese.

'Action Stations, Action Stations'. The sirens began to wail. Matsuba was perplexed. Who was insane enough to sail straight into Satusba on a suicide mission. There was one man, but no.... it could'nt be him....could it??.

Matsuba focused on the bridge of the leading enemy ship ( it was the Parrot ). He stared in amazement....it was none other than Rear Admiral 'Mad' Jack McMad, the maddest man from Madtown, his old drinking companion from his days while training at Dartmouth Naval College. It could only be him...no one else was mad enough.

Ensign Abe saluted. 'The guns are ready and awaiting orders Captain.'
Matsuba inwardly sighed. 'Fire at will', he replied.

The Satsuma's and Aki's guns roared their first volley in unison. The Battleships had spoken.

Matsuba was not a happy man. It was going to be a night to remember.

Allright...

+++ WAR: First Japanese troops have entered Chinese territory. +++
+++ French and British troops coordinate their defenses, as their demobilized armies will take many months, or even years, to be combat ready and shipped to Asia. +++
+++ The Netherland Government insists on its neutrality and is determined to defend it against any aggressor. While no troops of the entente are allowed into dutch territories, defense consultation have started. +++

UV was the game that got me hooked into a spiral of addiction that has spread virally through WitP, WPO, and AE.

I noticed on that link to the colored ships that stye had a lot of those old ones there. Nice to see you using it. I have no idea about most of them. Weird ungainly things, guns mounted all over the place, but strangely beautiful and stately.

Some of them certainly are weird and ungainly, and some have a rare beauty, a majesty almost.
It is a good site, some of the pictures are great.

UV has alot to answer for!!

There was a game that I used to play on my old Commodore <=64. I think it was the forerunner of UV. It was called 'War in the South Pacific', I think, and was by Gary Grigsby.
That was the true begining of my interest in the Pacific War.

Happy Days!!

Well the turn started dramatically, and two PG's ( again trying to intercept incoming amph transports near Laog/Vigan),
collided with the 9th Battle Squadron..... all a bit one sided against all that firepower,
but my opponent is playing more like he is in the Royal Navy....engage the enemy whenever and wherever you see them.

An opponent with a Heart of Oak!!

The PGs were given short shrift, although one managed to escape my clutches.

Next, four destroyers, again trying to intercept amph TF's met up with a bombardment TF heading for the cursed Batan Island.
The Truxton bore the brunt, and broke in half, taking her crew with her, but her valiant rearguard action stopped the BB's from pummelling the others.

Elsewhere, the marines at Shanghai got a pasting, and the 1st Kure SNLF were evacuated from Batan Island after their disasterous initial assault.

A few planes managed to bombard Batan, together with the Bombardment Group, so hopefully that has softened up Torstens defence's a bit.

an I-Boat is spotted off Hong Kong, and the turn comes to an end with my poor marines in Shanghai wiped out by coalition forces.

After the US PGs chased off a Jap battlegroup, the Japanese have decided to land at the undefended town of Aparri in the Philippines. They obviously fear the US Gunboats a lot!

The Japanese force of the Shanghai concession is wiped out by Chinese forces while the Japanese advance into Manchuria.

Top Secret

Turn 6:-

The game is really hotting up now!! Lots of action as Torsten's gallant little Gunboats try to stave off the might of the Imperial Navy.

The Asheville, Tulsa and Sacramento try to interdict a small force.
The CL Kuma shatters the Sacramento with her 6in shells and she soon sinks, while two shells crash into the Ashevilles steering gear, leaving her only able to sail in a circle.
This would have disastrous consequences for the Asheville as she tries to make good her escape.

All rather dispiriting as the Chinese, on sighting the Japanese, fired a few shots, threw all their excess baggage overboard, ( shoes, pencils, packets of noodles, and the ships officers ), and zoomed off into the mist like a couple of greyhounds on speed..

I'll catch them Torsten!! ( shakes fist in the air and starts playing the bagpipes )
