What is the rationale behind for not allowing the player to choose a TF as the target?

Mainly for three reasons:

1) Fog of war
2) Confusion during battles
3) Level of command

It is not up for the operational level commander to issue strike orders for task forces or airbases.

They each have their respective commanders who call the shots using the intelligence they have at the time. As in real-life, sometimes they make mistakes such as sending an air strike to attack a transport TF, only to discover few hours later that there are also carriers present –but in opposite direction.

This means that planes sometimes strike wrong targets and there is nothing the theatre operations commander can do about it. Think the battle of Midway and you get the picture.

This is the answer in nutshell, but I won't go into the details, or arguments, as there have been many many discussions about this topic in various threads before.

If you are interested, check for example these threads:

1) “UV models the reality of war - a realm of chance & chaos” General answer to your question

2) “Poll – Do you like the priorities for naval attack” Stuff about Air-Sea attack priorities

3) “Follow Enemy Taskforce” Why can’t you set enemy TF as a target for your own TF

These threads are a bit old, but you can find them by doing a search. Try keywords target or control

I hope this helps

Imagine this scenario:

You're playing PBEM. Your Search planes spot an enemy suface TF (doesn't matter if it's Combat or Bombardment). You figure that either you're gonna catch it coming or going.

You click on your own Surface Combat TF and select "Follow Enemy TF", and you select that enemy TF to follow.

On the next turn, your TF goes tear-assing after the TF, but wait... the enemy has retreated - right into enemy LBA range, and you get pummelled.

What you'll hear next is whining about how "gamey" a "trick" that is. Anyone who has studied tactics of the early to mid 20th century IJN/IJA understands that "luring" and "deception were the staple of their battle plans. Just look at Midway.

Anyway, I personally don't find a need for this feature. In a recent Scenario 19, in a mid-May turn, I managed to surprise and nail all three IJN carriers, and then proceeded to chase them half way back to Truk and finish them off. I selected a point where I wanted to be, and then turned on "React" and it worked very nicely.

I might want the follow feature for subs, because subs only follow TF when on Computer control, and then they tend to wander all over hellandgone...
