Combat

The mines at Palembang are being swept by 2 MSWs.

Ulithi underwent a naval bombardment by 4 X CL and 2 X DD that lightly damaged the airfield, trashed some supplies, destroyed 2 P-39Ds, 3 P-47Ds and a PBM and inflicted very heavy casualties. Then the sun came up and the IJN was attacked by 9 SBDs (1 damaged) and 13 P-39Ds (2 damaged) and a CL was hit by 2 bombs and was reported to be burning while 2 others were strafed by the Airacobras for multiple hits. Another attack made up of 4 X PB4Y and 6 X P-38J appeared and a CL was hit with a bomb and was observed to have been heavily damaged and on fire. Another attack on Japanese ships near Ulithi was made by 9 X SBD (3 damaged), 3 X P-39D and 2 X F4U-1D. A CL was hit by a bomb and was burning while a DD was heavily strafed. More planes arrived to join in to the air assault. This time 19 X B-24J and 7 X PB4Y arrived and 2 CLs were hit by 3 bombs each and both were burning and heavily damaged. The Americans still weren't done as they threw 6 X P-39D, 3 X P-47D and 11 X F4U-1D at the ships and a CL was repeatedly strafed.

The SS Lancetfish, 78 miles NE of Tarakan, found an AK plodding along with 3 X PG and 2 X PC. She attacked and hit the ship with a torpedo.

The SS Dace, 27 miles S of Gasmata, torpedoed an AP with 2 fish and the 4 escorting PCs never even got a sniff of her.

The IJA 30th Division, near Moulmein, was being protected by 2 Jacks when 37 Mitchells attacked. 10 of the bombers were damaged and the unit had moderate losses. The Japanese threw artillery shells at the Allied troops causing virtually no losses and the Allied guns responded, doing moderate losses to the Japanese.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was jumped by 7 Helens and the Chinese had very light losses.

2 X Jack and 9 X Frances attacked the AK Sloviken, 189 miles W of Rangoon, hitting her with a torpedo. A short while later the men watched their ship disappear.

The Allied TF 43 miles SW of Akyab was attacked by 17 X Judy, 11 X Jill and 22 X Zeke. There was a CAP of 21 X P-38J on hand to greet them and the Japanese suffered 5 Judys shot down (2 damaged), 5 Jills splashed (1 damaged) and 8 Zekes destroyed (1 damaged). A Lightning was shot up and a bomb found the AK Empire Lynx and 4 hit the AK Samspring, leaving her heavily damaged and burning.

The SS Sailfish, 81 miles N of Bali, tagged a lone AP with 2 torpedoes causing heavy damage and after reloading hit it again with 2 more fish, breaking it's back and sinking it.

An Allied artillery bombardment at Rangoon inflicted very heavy casualties on the Japanese defenders.

The IJN having naval air in the Indian Ocean has taken the RN totally by surprise.

The USN never had a sniff of the Japanese ships approaching Ulithi and efforts have been increased to protect the Marianas and the convoys heading that way.

The USN has a large convoy heading towards Petropavlovsk to resupply the base. This time around stealth isn't being relied on and if the Japanese respond they'll be in for a rough time of it.

Stick climbed out of the cockpit and jumped onto the ground gesturing and in a very animated and excited way he described the bombing and strafing of the Japanese ships. He had a ringside seat as he was flying escort to prevent any Japanese planes from making an appearance. “I tell ya the Airacobras strafed the hell out of them cruisers, then them Dauntlesses scream down and dump bombs on 'em and then those big 4 engine Liberators blanket the area with bombs and some even scored hits. We're killin' 'em.” After a short rest he goes to his plane that has refueled and he's off again as soon as the other planes have been rearmed and fueled.

The 2nd Marines are weary of such a long journey and they expect to see Guam within about 5 days or so. Slim says to Gunny that if Kwajelein is in the way they should just take it. “It's stupid to have to waste all of this time going around the place. We should make a stop and kill the bums that are there,” he says. Gunny says nothing and continues to stare off, seeing nothing. He then mumbles something about them having plenty of fighting in the future without having to add more.

Sandy and Dave went into town and she got a few letters there when she stopped at the Post Office. She couldn't wait to get home and arranged them according to the numbers on the outside of the envelopes. She sat on the bench at the bus stop and read them while Dave was busy arranging for some parts. When he was done they both went to the market together. He asked how Bill was and Sandy replied, “He seems to be lonely.”

Combat

At Brunei 4 PGs and a PCs discovered a mine field.

The SS Bowfin, at 40,52, attacked a TK and hit it with a torpedo and then gave the slip to the escorts that tried to find their tormentor.

Koepang was bombed by 29 X B-24J, 4 of which were damaged by the AA fire. The port was lightly damaged, there were a few secondary explosions, casualties were light and an AP was heavily damaged by a bomb hit. Then 135 X B-24D and 45 X B-24J roared in for their attack. 12 of the D types and 5 of the Js were damaged by flak as they heavily damaged the airfield, moderately damaged the port, caused a great many secondary explosions, inflicted very heavy losses on personnel and hit the AP with 2 more bombs, leaving it on fire. After all was quiet the AP settled and now just her masthead shows above the water.

Port Moresby underwent a fighter sweep by 68 X P-38J who mixed it up with 13 Zekes, 8 Tojos and 4 Tonys while a raid arrived consisting of 47 X B-17E, 48 X B-24D and 95 X B-24J. Between .50 cal and bombs the Japanese lost 12 Zekes, 6 Tojos, 6 Tonys and 5 Judys. The Allied planes suffered 4 P-38Js shot down (6 damaged), 8 B-17Es damaged, 3 B-24Ds damaged and 3 B-24Js were also damaged. The airfield was very heavily damaged, there were a great many secondary explosions and the troops sustained very heavy casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, still starving and unable to move, was struck by 10 X Helen for light losses.

A CL limping away from Ulithi was attacked by 7 X SBD, 12 X P-39D and 7 X P-47D. The ship, thought to be the Tama was hit by a bomb and some 37mm shells and was burning and heavily damaged. Another wave of attackers arrived and the 7 SBDs, 11 Airacobras, 3 Thunderbolts and 15 F4U-1Ds went to work hitting their target with 3 bombs and more 37mm shells. This was enough to kill off the doomed vessel.

At Moulmein artillery exchanges ruled the day and the Allied forces had extremely light losses while the Japanese had light casualties.

An Allied artillery bombardment on Rangoon's defenders caused heavy losses.

Stick has 2 more escort missions under his belt after today and he relates to the mechanics how it looked as the planes pounded and ultimately sank the Japanese cruiser. The ground crew loves hearing Stick's narratives almost as much as he loves telling them. He still longs for the chance to score a kill.

Gil finally arrived in Pittsburgh in the wee hours of the morning due to the railroad having some kind of problems. He knew that he had to wait so he timed his arrival on Squirrel Hill for breakfast. His cab dropped him off and he walked up to the front door and rang the bell. Elaine answered the door and almost knocked Gil off of his feet with the lunge at him that ended in a hug and kiss. This was worth waiting for, he thinks. Suddenly Elaine lets go of him, steps back and says, “Gil, why didn't you tell me you were coming?” Later in the day Gil phones his uncle's hand bag factory in Brooklyn and speaks to him, asking that he pass the word to his parents that he'll be coming home for a visit in a week. Elaine isn't happy to lose him for that time, but he assures her that he'll return and spend more time with her before returning to duty.

Stalin sits with his generals and plots how to further press the Japanese. “The Americans are dragging their feet about attacking the Japanese in concert with us so I propose that we put off any attack until the time that suits us. Of course any provocation by the Japanese shall be dealt with harshly. In the meantime continue upgrading our units and see to their training.” With a wave of the hand the generals depart the room as Stalin's dismissal is not to be ignored.

Nikolaev was taken by the Russians.

Combat

Rangoon was raided by 48 X B-24J and 7 of them were damaged by AA fire. The airfield was heavily damaged, a large secondary explosion was seen and casualties were heavy. An Allied artillery bombardment caused very heavy losses.

The IJA 30th Division, at Moulmein, was pounced on by 33 X B-25J and 10 X Thunderbolt II. 15 Mitchells were damaged by ground fire and the unit had heavy losses. The 5th Indian Division, not to far away, was hit by 18 Helens for moderate casualties. Then the 251st UK Brigade was attacked by 17 X Frances, 6 X Helen and 6 Lily who inflicted heavy losses. The 7th Indian Division was the next unit targeted and 2 X Jack, 9 X Frances, 3 X Lily and 3 X Helen hit for light Allied losses. Another strike at the 7th Indian Division by 26 Helens, 1 of which was damaged, caused moderate casualties. Artillery duels caused both sides to have moderate losses.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was bombed by 6 Helens and both sides had no losses.

The SS Sailfish, 77 miles N of Bali, found a lone AP and hit it with 3 torpedoes.

It has become obvious that a LRCAP must be maintained over Moulmein to protect the troops there. If the Japanese throw planes against the Allied troops tomorrow then there should be some P-38Js on hand to greet them.

Troops have begun loading for the invasion of Iwo Jima.

Sam awaits his turn in the long line of men waiting to board their ship. He's done this to often he thinks and wonders if he'll survive to see home again. With so many men in his squad being killed or wounded a fatalistic attitude hangs over the men now. Sam even feels that the time spent in combat isn't as bad as the time off the line in some respects.

Gil is in heaven as home cooking and good company are making him forget about the realities that hover over the horizon for him. He has an animated discussion with Elaine's father during dinner about the upcoming season and how they expect their respective teams will do. Baseball rules in this household and if you're not a Pirates fan you had better root for an American League team, which Gil does. “If you had been a Giants or Dodgers fan I might not like you so much,” Gil is told.

Pete has arranged with an editor from both the Brisbane Telegraph and the Courier Mail for a little help in his prank. When he informs Sylvia of the final plans she lets out a squeal of delight and says, “He'll have a canary, he will.” They laugh and prepare for sleep. It's been a long day and Pete's pooped and Sylvia is huge.

Port Moresby was bombed by 46 X B-17E, 48 X B-24D, 60 X B-24J and 60 X P-38J. Flak destroyed a B-17E, damaging 4 more along with 4 X B-24D and 6 X B-24J. The airfield was subjected to extremely heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions, 3 Judys were trashed and troop losses were very heavy.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 7 Helens who managed to do no harm to the Chinese.

At Moulmein the 7th Indian Division was attacked by 8 Zekes, 24 Georges, 12 Jacks, 25 Frances, 3 Lily and 9 Helens. 9 X P-38J engaged them and at the cost of 5 of the big fighters they destroyed 2 Zekes, 5 Georges, 2 Jacks and damaged a Frances. The unit had moderate losses. The Japanese artillery inflicted moderate losses on the Allied troops and the Allied guns did no damage.

5 PB4Ys attacked the AK about 143 miles SW of Kwajalein, but missed it.

At Rangoon the Allied artillery accounted for heavy Japanese troop losses.

RAF planners were not happy that the air over Moulmein was filled with Japanese fighters today and want more Lightnings in the air tomorrow.

Sam quietly sees to it that the squad's gear is ready to go and berates a replacement for being lax. One of the guys tells the replacement that, “Sam is a good guy, he really cares about us. The thing is it takes something out of us when somebody gets it. If we're sharp maybe we'll do a little better and not suffer quite so much. Of course those other guys waiting for our arrival have a little to say on the subject too.” The new guy sees to his gear, thinking about “those other guys.”

Gil and Elaine went downtown today and visited The Point. It nice there though the rivers are very polluted. Later in the afternoon they were back on Squirrel Hill sitting on the porch with Elaine's grandmother. A streetcar rumbled by and the woman said something about them and Gil said, “It's a trolley, not a streetcar.” Elaine laughed and said to her grandmother that she'd have to forgive him as he's from Brooklyn, which is almost like another country.

Many of the ships now sailing for the Bonins have orders to have their upgrades done after the operation is completed. The Helena still has no such orders and Bill really is feeling like he could use a break. It's been a long time since he had some time to relax. He misses Sandy and sighs as he looks at a recent picture she sent to him. He thinks that it must be pretty cold in the mountains with all of the snow in the background of the picture.

Kleist and Manstein were fired by Hitler and he replaced them with Schorner and Model.

795 RAF bombers attacked Nuremberg and 96 were lost.

Combat

Tavoy's airfield was attacked by 26 X B-24J, 7 of which were damaged by AA fire. The field was lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were scored and a Lily and a Frances were clobbered at their revetments.

Rangoon was targeted by 38 X B-25J, 7 damaged by flak, and they caused light Japanese casualties. Allied artillery bombardments caused heavy Japanese losses.

Koepang was attacked by 143 X B-24D and ground fire knocked 1 out of the sky and damaged 16 others. The port was heavily damaged, a great many secondary explosions were observed and the troops had heavy losses.

Dili was raided by 35 X B-24J and 5 were damaged as they caused light damage to the airfield, a few secondary explosions and light casualties.

Kwajalein was swept by 24 P-47Ds who ended up leaving unchallenged.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 7 X Helen and the Chinese had very light casualties.

The 5th Indian Division, in the Moulmein area, was attacked by 6 Zekes, 18 Georges, 8 Jacks, 18 Frances, 4 Lilys and 4 Helens. Today the Allies had 20 P-38Js on hand and the Japanese suffered greatly as 3 Zekes, 6 Georges (1 damaged), 7 Jacks, 3 Frances (1 damaged), a Lily (1 damaged) and 2 Helens were shot down. 4 Lightnings were lost in the fight and 3 others were damaged, but ground losses were negligible. A short time later 31 X Helen arrived without escorts and 9 P-38Js attacked them, destroying 2 and damaging another. A Lightning was downed and Allied troops had light losses. Japanese artillery accounted for very light Allied losses and the Allied guns inflicted similar casualties on the Japanese.

Kai Island had it's airstrip attacked by 136 X B-25J (1 destroyed, 15 damaged), 24 X Kittyhawk III and 18 X P-40N. The strip was moderately damaged, a few secondary explosions were reported, a Betty and an Emily were destroyed and ground losses were light.

Paramushiro Jima was raided by 56 X SB2C and 20 X F6F. 3 Helldivers were downed and 6 more were damaged by flak as they inflicted very light damage on the airfield, caused some secondary explosions and there were almost no casualties to the personnel.

Gil woke up and after washing up headed downstairs to the smell of coffee. Elaine, who doesn't even know how to boil water, is still sleeping. Her mother hands Gil a cup and tells him that pancakes, eggs and sausages will be on the table soon. Gil walks out of the kitchen into the backyard and finds Elaine's dad coming out of the garage. “So Yankee fan are you ready to face another day being led around?” he asks Gil. Gil laughs and nods as he thinks that she's better looking than any of the company he's been keeping in the Army.

“So all you have to do is not spill the beans and play your parts like I told you.” Pete has finished filling in his co conspirators for his prank that'll be sprung on Milt tomorrow. He has the phony issues of the newspapers hidden away and everyone knows what to do. He just has to remember to do a little something extra after cleaning up the pub tonight when they're closed.

Bill observes as food and fuel are loaded onto the Helena. Another large operation is about to kick off and Guam's harbor is straining to meet the demands being placed on it. Many ships have already departed for the rendezvous point, but the fast CVTFs will be among the last to leave.

Everybody wants to know where they're going and the company CO just says something about names meaning nothing. Sam later learns that the island they're heading to is closer to Japan than anything attempted to date. “That'll make the Japs real happy,” he mutters.

Combat

The SS Sealion, 85 miles E of Kagoshima, was forced to dive by the appearance of 4 DDs, which never found her. Then 4 PCs and a MSW hunted her, again never obtaining her location. Later the PCs again tried to attack her, but the sub escaped without damage. In the late afternoon DDs appeared and they gave the Sealion a tough time. Her crew is fighting moderate flooding and systems damage. They expect to make it to Ulithi for temporary repairs and then they will head for a yard.

The SS Snapper, 19 miles NE of Medan, got every submariner's dream as she got a good attack in on a CV. It was reported that she scored a torpedo hit on what was thought to have been the CV Amagi, causing fires. The escorts didn't locate the sub. In the afternoon DDs found and hammered the sub for a prolonged period of time. The sub is trying to make for Rangoon as her systems are heavily damaged and the flooding is threatening to sink her, survival is doubtful. If she makes it to Rangoon her crew must pray the the Allied troops there can have operational facilities before the sub arrives.

The SS Bowfin, 22 miles SW of Bataan, failed in her bid to attack a TK under escort by 3 MSWs.

Rangoon was raided by 31 X B-25J, 1 downed and 9 damaged, who caused very light casualties.

Kwajalein was futilely swept by 22 X P-47D who returned home with nothing for their efforts.

Buna was bombed by 6 X B-24D and the Japanese had very light casualties. No damage was done to any facilities.

Port Moresby was hit by 48 X B-24J, 7 damaged. The port was heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were light.

Lunga was swept by 24 X P-38J who were met by 3 X Zeke, 27 X Jack and 3 X Tony. The Americans lost 2 Lightnings and had 3 more damaged while the Japanese had 2 Zekes, 3 Jacks (1 damaged) and 2 Tonys downed.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was jumped by 7 X Helen and casualties were light.

The 5th Indian Division, at Moulmein, was attacked by 38 Helens who were intercepted by 5 X P-38J. 3 Helens were destroyed and 2 damaged, but casualties were heavy from the bombing. Japanese artillery inflicted heavy losses on the Allied troops while the Allied artillery was off target.

Koepang was attacked by 71 X P-38J and AA fire shot down 1 while damaging 6 more. Ground personnel had heavy casualties.

Paramushiro Jima was attacked by 51 Helldivers and 20 Hellcats. A Helldiver went down and 7 more were damaged by the flak. The airfield was lightly damaged, a Betty was left burning and casualties were very light.

The SS Muskallunge, 78 miles NE of Camranh Bay, attacked a TK and hit it with a fish. She then made good her escape before being detected.

Rangoon was assaulted and the attackers smashed through the Japanese defenses inflicting extremely heavy losses on the Japanese while having heavy casualties of their own. Rangoon is now in Allied hands.

The resupply of Petropavlovsk has been discovered by snooping Bettys. The Japanese are aware of the composition of the entire operation and now it remains to be seen what the reaction will be.

With the fall of Rangoon the British will pump supplies into the base as fast as possible to maintain their forces in the area. A debate rages as to it would be wise to pause and refit the formations or continue to press forward. An eye is being cast towards Rahaeng as the Japanese are building up a large force there, with armor.

Everything is ready and everyone is ready when Milt arrives with Jac. He walks over to Sylvia, pats her tummy and says hello to Pete. He then walks over to his friends as he orders his usual. The men are busily talking and Milt asks what's going on. “I tell you that this is going to far,” the man says stabbing a finger at the front page story in the paper. “Did you see the news yet?” he asks Milt. Milt shakes his head indicating that he hasn't and another one of his pals shoves a paper into his face. “How's a man supposed to survive?” the man finishes. Milt reads the paper and the color flows out of his face. “It's true Milt. Those damned Japanese sunk the ship. Now we won't have any decent whiskey here for who knows how long. It's a black day for Australia.” The man leans back in his seat with a forlorn look on his face. Pete arrives with Milt's drink saying that he'd better enjoy it because there's only 1 bottle left and he can't order any more. Milt sits silently staring at the glass in front of him and then downs it. Pete suggests that if they ration the bottle it'll last for maybe a week, if only Milt has it. Milt is unable to talk as he stares blankly at the now empty glass. Suddenly he bolts upright in his chair and starts cursing the Japanese for ruining one of his few enjoyments left to him. In the meantime Pete sets a bottle in front of Milt after refilling the glass telling him to enjoy it. Milt's friend says, “How could they sink that ship out of the hundreds sailing all over the place?” Milton gulps down the drink and declares that he'll have another with hi friends and to hell with saving the bottle. They toast one another and when done somebody declares, “Well that's that for now.” Milt nods and Sylvia brings another bottle to the table as they all yell “APRIL FOOLS!” Milt tells them that they're a cruel lot and then the party swings into high gear. Milt is a good sport and his pals proceed to get him roaring drunk.

The USAAF accidentally bombed Schaffhausen, in Switzerland. The Swiss protested and the Americans offered reparations.

The SS Muskallunge, 257 miles NE of Camranh Bay, hit a lone AP with 2 torpedoes.

Maloelap was raided by 26 X PB4Y and 48 X P-38J. The airstrip was lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and casualties were though to have been very light.

Koepang was attacked by 63 X P-38J and the flak knocked 1 down and damaged 9 more. The port was lightly damaged, there were a few secondary explosions and the troops had light losses.

Lunga was swept by 18 X P-38J and 2 X Zeke, 19 X Jack and a Tony gave battle. A P-38J was shot down and the Japanese lost a Zeke, 4 Jacks and a Tony.

Moulmein was the scene of artillery exchanges and the Allied troops had very light casualties as did the Japanese.

In the Rangoon area Allied attacks continue in the attempt to eliminate the Japanese, who had very heavy losses while the Allies did also.

A Judy attacked the SS Hake 139 miles E of Kagoshima. The sub reported that it's been hit and that it has light systems damage and some flooding. She will make for Guam for repairs.

Considering that yesterday was April Fools Day Sam is surprised that there was such a lack of pranks pulled by the guys on one another. The tension is growing and the ships continue to circle the area as more join them all of the time, or so they're told by the crew.

Bill lets a junior officer take the Helena out of the port and they ease into their station on the port quarter of a CVL. Bill is pleased with his officers and this young man bears watching as he handles a ship as well as he does men.

Gunny and Slim sit eating apples and both of them are silent. Being lost in thought they both don't see the 2 new guys approaching them. “Gunny,” one of them says, “When we ask around nobody gives a an answer about what it's like in combat. They all say the same thing “you don't want to know.” What do they say that? Are they trying to scare us?” Gunny sighs and looks at Slim and then he tells the new guys that they really don't want to know what it's like. He goes on to tell them that if they aren't scared they're liars because everybody is scared. Slim nods at that and he adds that if they remember their training and follow orders they'll do alright. The 2 guys nod and thank them and they leave. Gunny says to Slim that they'll do OK if they live long enough and then he wonders what they'll be like when they board ships to invade some island somewhere.

The Russians entered Romania and threatened to shoot 1/3 of all of the German POWs if the 1st Panzer Army doesn't surrender.

Combat

The IJA 30th Division, near Moulmein, was bombed by 36 X Liberator VI, 2 of which were damaged. The Japanese unit had heavy casualties. Moulmein was the site of continuing artillery exchanges and the Allied troops had extremely light casualties while the Japanese had moderate losses.

The 123rd IJA Base Force, near Rangoon, was hit by 28 X B-25J (1 damaged). There were heavy losses sustained by the Japanese. Allied artillery in the Rangoon area hit the Japanese for light losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was raided by 5 Helens and there were very light losses.

A Judy attacked the SS Batfish about 141 miles E of Kagoshima and the sub has radioed in that it was hit. She has light systems damage and moderate flooding.

Milt stopped by the hotel and of course a quick nip at the pub was in order. A couple of guys had a good laugh at Milt's expense and he just laughed along with them. He did shake a warning finger at Pete and said, “If I didn't love you so much I'd have to have my revenge on you. Instead I'll just have to content myself with keeping an eye on you to make sure that you're a good father for my grandchild and of course I'll try to drink the pub dry.” The laugh is now directed towards Pete who is enjoying it all. For a person who never had a family life to speak of before this is great, he thinks.

With the 2nd Marine Division now going ashore at Guam it will rest in preparation of the next operation, for which it will be the tip of the spear. Slim is glad to be getting onto Terra Firma once more. Guam is secure, but the Marines will still provide security for their assigned area. Gunny is amazed at the sheer numbers of everything amassed here and a Sea Bee tells him that last week there was even more. “You guys are missing out on all of the fun as those ships crowding the harbor are loading for an attack on some spot closer to Japan.”

The RN sent 42 Barracudas against the Tirpitz and they scored 14 hits.

The SS Tally Ho, 16 miles SW of Georgetown, was attacked by 5 DDs.

The IJA 49th Division, near Moulmein, was attacked by 21 X Liberator VI and 7 X Thunderbolt II. 2 of the bombers were damaged by ground fire and the Japanese had moderate losses. Not to far away the7th Indian Division was attacked by 15 X Frances and 6 X Helen. A CAP of 3 X Corsair IV and 17 X P-38J tore into the Japanese planes and downed 8 X Frances and all of the Helens. 2 Lightnings were damaged and no troops were hurt. Another attack on the 7th Indian was made by 38 X Helen and a Corsair IV and 8 X P-38J attacked them destroying 11 and damaging 6 while 3 P-38Js were damaged. The troops took moderate losses. A Japanese attack trying to evict the Allied troops cost the Allies heavy losses while the Japanese sustained extremely heavy losses. The Allied lines held. Allied artillery again was off the mark and missed their intended target.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was attacked by 7 X Helen and both sides escaped without any losses.

Lautem was raided by 138 X B-25J, 24 X Kittyhawk III and 21 P-40N. AA fire downed 2 Mitchells and damaged 34 while the airfield was moderately damaged, many secondary explosions were reported and heavy casualties were inflicted on the troops.

Combat

The SS Triton, 136 miles E of Shimizu, was attacked by 4 DDs who handled the sub roughly. Then 5 X PC attacked, but failed to come close to hitting their target. In the afternoon 5 DDs appeared and forced the sub to stay under and luckily she evaded them before they managed to obtain a fix on her location. Though the sub has very minor leakage, her systems have sustained some light damage, enough to warrant cutting short her patrol. She will now make for Wake Island.

The SS Flying Fish, 142 miles NE of Truk, spotted and attacked a lone AK. The sub hit her target with 2 torpedoes and then observed troops jumping into the water to avoid the flames.

The IJA 49th Division, in the Moulmein area, was bombed by 24 X B-24J (1 damaged) and had light losses. Japanese artillery accounted for very light Allied casualties and the Allied gunners caused moderate losses to the Japanese.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 7 Helens who missed and nobody suffered anything due to the attack.

The SS Sailfish, 149 miles NE of Bali, attacked an AP that was unescorted. She fed 2 fish to her target causing heavy damage and fires.

In the Rangoon area Allied artillery managed to expend many rounds and do no damage to the Japanese.

Support troops and supplies are unloading at Rangoon as engineers work feverishly to repair the port facilities now that the airfield is fully functional. Plans call for the expansion of both once repairs are finished.

Operation Crescendo is loaded and ready to go. The minesweepers are scheduled to depart for Iwo Jima today. The objectives are Iwo Jima and Bonin and if all goes well then Tori Shima. It is expected that the Japanese will make a fight of this operation and that's exactly what the USN wants. Japanese LBA is expected to be active and it'll surprise nobody if the IJN BBs appear to try and wreck some mayhem.

The CL Helena ploughs through the swells, keeping her station, and Bill quietly observes his crew doing their jobs. There's nothing better than the command of a good ship and crew, he thinks. Later when he returns to his cabin he rereads some of Sandy's letters and then writes to her. He says that though the Navy is his career, he knows that that will end and then he'd like to try living in the mountains.

Sam shifts uneasily in his bunk and finally decides to go topside. A member of the crew tells him that he's supposed to stay below and Sam looks at the man and says, “Get outta my way. You think they're gonna do anything to me for this that could be worse than fightin' the Japs? Now move.” With that Sam finds a peaceful stop and enjoys the night air. He's jolted awake by somebody kicking his foot and telling him to wake up. It's a major who's busy telling him to get back to his bunk or else. Sam eyes the man and is about to say something when he decides to just say, “Yes Sir.” He gets up and heads for the hell below and the major moves off. Seeing this Sam heads back and finds a spot that is more concealed and promptly falls back to sleep.

Gil and Elaine have been having a great time together and Gil has decided to spend a couple of extra days in Pittsburgh before heading home. They went to the train station today and he got a ticket for this coming Saturday. From there they go to the Botanical Gardens as Elaine loves it there. She says, “I love these plants and the flowers are so beautiful. Some day I want to have a house and garden of my own.” Gil thinks of the apartment that his family lives in at Coney Island and tries to picture how Elaine would react to that. The picture isn't pretty and he tells her about the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and that New York City has so much to do and see. She says that maybe some day she'll visit there with him.

The RAF and USAAF conducted the first of the 24 hour round the clock raids on Ploiesti.

Jewish inmates escaped from Auschwitz-Birkenau and made it to Czechoslovakia warning of what's going on and also told the Vatican.

Combat

The SS Skate, 14 miles N of Ishieak, attacked a heavily escorted AK and 2 torpedoes slammed into her victim, sinking it.

Koepang's port was bombed by 28 X B-24J and AA fire damaged 8 of the planes. The target was moderately damaged, there were many secondary explosions, an AP was hit by a bomb and troop losses were very light. Another raid made up of 106 B-24Ds arrived before the dust had settled and the flak damaged 9 of them. The port was rocked for heavy damage, a great many secondary explosions were reported, the AP was nailed by no fewer than 9 bombs and troop losses were moderate. Later 14 X PB4Y came a calling and 5 were damaged by the ground fire. The port was lightly damaged and the burning hulk that was an AP was struck by another bomb. A short time later the waters of the harbor doused the flames on the AP as she went under.

Gili Gili was swept by 66 X P-38J and the Japanese challenged them with 6 X Jack and 24 X Tony. In the lopsided battle the Japanese pilots gave a good account of themselves, knocking 9 Lightnings out of the sky and damaging another. This didn't come without cost as all of the Japanese planes were shot down except for 3 Tonys.

Port Moresby was visited by 46 X B-17E (1 damaged), 47 X B-24D (3 damaged) and 95 X B-24J (3 damaged). The airfield suffered extremely heavy damage, a great many secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were heavy.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force, still stuck in place with no supplies, was struck by 7 X Helen who missed with their bombs.

3 X PB4Y attacked the Japanese AK 19 miles SW of Kwajalein, but came up empty for their efforts.

Artillery exchanges at Moulmein produced light casualties on both sides.

In the Rangoon area Allied troops attacked the Japanese and both sides experienced heavy losses, though the Japanese defense is crumbling.

With each passing day Gil is feeling the pangs of missing Elaine again. He really doesn't want to leave Pittsburgh, but he does want to visit with his family and maybe see a few friends. Elaine is feeling the same way.

Sam is thinking about what he was like before the Army got him and what he's become. He wonders how he'll adjust back to home once the war ends, if he survives. The transport seems to have ceased it's endless circles and he believes that they are on their way to another garden spot to be enjoyed by the surviving victors.

Gunny has his platoon out on a patrol and they've spotted nothing. He has them deployed in a long line abreast with 1 squad behind as a reserve. Just because the island is secure doesn't mean that one should get lax, he informed the other NCOs. He's pleased that the lads are keeping their spacing and when he does spot some bunching up he's on top of them gruffly reminding the offenders.

The USN has deployed and is hunting for any IJN assets that may be brave enough to show themselves. The Bonins are so close to Japan that Bill believes that a large and costly battle will be in the offing.

Ed's Old Gals are going to supply support for the landings as usual and as usual Ed is having his fears of running into large mine fields.

Combat

Tavoy's airfield was targeted by 116 X Liberator VI, 13 X Corsair IV, 12 X Spitfire VIII and 48 X Thunderbolt II. Allied planners were right to have the foresight to include the heavy escort for the bombers as the Japanese had 8 X Zeke, 23 X George and 5 X Jack aloft. The Japanese tried in vain to pierce the Allied escort's protective shield and they lost all but 2 Jacks in the attempt. The raid cost 5 Liberator VIs and 2 Thunderbolt IIs damaged while the base was heavily damaged, some secondary explosions were observed and ground losses were moderate.

Koepang was subjected to a sweep by 71 X P-38J and 14 X Zeke, 7 X Jack, 6 X Tojo and 4 X Tony contested it. The Allied planners had been aware that the Japanese snuck aircraft into the base and now the battle was on. 10 Zekes, 7 Jacks, 6 Tojos and 4 Tonys were shot down at the cost of 3 Lightnings destroyed and 2 others were damaged. This was a classic case of a reverse ambush.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was paid a visit by 3 X Helen and the Chinese had very light losses as a result.

At Moulmein the opposing forces continued to exchange artillery barrages. The Allied troops had negligible losses while the Japanese sustained light casualties.

An Allied attack near Rangoon was made in an effort to eliminate the surviving Japanese forces. The Allied troops had heavy losses while the Japanese had extremely heavy casualties inflicted on them as they managed to cling to an ever shrinking perimeter.

Stick has 26 missions under his belt and the kill total remains stuck at 0. “I'm a natural born killer and the Japs are afraid of me,” he says. “They hide when the Flying Deuces are in the neighborhood because of me.” Everybody shares the laugh and they throw down another warm beer. The Sea Bees had some cold beer for trade, but the price was just to high.

The ships that resupplied Petropavlovsk are on the way back to their respective bases after the mission was accomplished without so much as a whimper from the Japanese. If there had been any trouble the USN had assets on hand to deal with it.

Ed is finding sleep hard to come by as he's obsessing about mines and the risk they pose to the operation. There's nothing he can do about them and his escorts will not participate in the bombardment due to the range in an effort to avoid them.

Gil and Elaine are anxious because tomorrow morning Gil leaves for home. They know that he'll be back soon, but they've been apart so much and now the future and it's uncertainties loom large. For tonight they walk along Forbes Avenue to the movies. It's only a couple of blocks from the house so the night's chill isn't to bad. “This avenue is so long. It seems to go everywhere,” says Gil. Elaine laughs and leans in closer to him as they walk.

Goebbels took overall control of Berlin.

Combat

USN MSWs encountered mines at Iwo Jima and immediately set about sweeping them.

The SS Skate, 22 miles SE of Naha, was stalking an AP that was being escorted by 8 MSWs when suddenly she was detected and forced to dive deep. She immediately resumed the hunt when it was realized that the escorts had no fix on her. When the AP was within range and a favorable firing solution was obtained a spread of fish were loosed and 1 of them struck home. The AP was heavily damaged and burning and troops were seen abandoning the ship.

Koepang was swept by 58 X P-38J and the Japanese sent 6 X Zeke, 2 X Jack, 2 X Tojo and 2 X Tony to tangle with them. All of the Japanese planes were splashed except for 2 Zekes who ran. 2 Lightnings were damaged in the lopsided fight.

Near Rangoon another Allied attack inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese while the Allies had heavy casualties. As usual the Japanese are fighting to the death despite hunger, thirst and even a lack of ammunition.

At Moulmein the Allied artillery accomplished little.

The O`Bannon is moving from Guam to Saipan in anticipation of escort duties for the invasion fleet. Phil enjoys the short runs with other DDs and he calls it loosing the Greyhounds. With calm seas the O'Bannon knifes through the water and will arrive at Saipan soon.

The CL Helena has been detached from the CVTF to be part of a SAG bound for Saipan. Bill wonders what's up as he doesn't expect to see any surface action. He shrugs and wonders if all of the firing exercises will do the trick. The deflection problems should make for better gunnery, but one doesn't really know until the stuff hits the fan.

Gil stands on the train platform embracing Elaine saying, “I'll be back soon. I'll call you when I know the travel plans.” He misses her already and knows that she feels the same. The call to board comes and he kisses her once more before getting on the train. She stands there waving as the train pulls out of the station and disappears. Gil finds a seat and settles into it wondering how long this will take.

Slim's section was getting in some range time when one of the MGs jammed. He walked over to the crew and asked what was wrong and they just shrugged. He inspected everything and told them that the ammo in the belt was the cause. “This can be avoided if we all do our jobs. When we have problems like this people die, our people.” He walked away thinking about what he had told them and wondering who would die next time out.

Sam remains grouchy and can't shake it. He dreads the coming combat He wonders why it seems that the 25th Division seems to be getting the call so often. He knows that the odds on his survival will continue to get longer as he sees more and more combat.

The Russians reached the Slovakian border and continued to advance into Romania.

The final offensive to eliminate the German 17th Army in the Crimea began today.

The mine fields at Iwo Jima continue to be swept by the USN MSWs. 82 X SBD (4 damaged), 15 X SB2C (3 damaged), 54 X TBF (8 damaged), 33 X TBM 1 damaged) and 14 X F6Fstruck the airfield for light damage and destroyed 6 Judys.

Tavoy was swept by 24 X P-38J, but after loitering for a while it was clear that there would be no fight today.

Koepang had a CAP of 9 X Zeke and 7 X Jack aloft when 25 X B-24J appeared. The bombers fought their way through, 2 suffering damage and 2 of the Zekes were hit. The airfield was lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and Japanese casualties were light. A reduced CAP of 8 Zekes and 7 Jacks confronted the next raid of 144 X B-24D and 47 X B-24J. 2 Zekes (4 damaged) and 3 Jacks (1 damaged) were shot down by the heavy defensive fire of the Liberators while 2 -Ds went down along with 13 being damaged and 4 -Js were also hit. This time around the airfield took very heavy damage, light damage was done to the port, a large number of secondary explosions were claimed and casualties to the personnel was heavy.

Buna was raided by 72 X B-24J who did light damage to the port.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force got off scott free despite the effort of 5 Helens.

The USN TF 26 miles E of Iwo Jima was attacked by 11 X Judy and all of them were destroyed by the CAP of 34 X F4F-4, 20 X FM-2 and 90 X F6F before they reached their target. Then 13 X Betty gave it a go and all of them were downed at the cost of a Hellcat destroyed and 8 more damaged. Once more the ships were never in danger.

The Allied troops attacked the Japanese around Rangoon again causing very heavy losses and having moderate casualties of their own. The Japanese pocket continues to shrink.

At Moulmein the Allied artillery caused lots of noise, but no ill effects on the Japanese who appear to be pulling out.

It was a tiring trip, but arrival at New York's Penn Station enabled Gil to catch an A train downtown and transfer at 4th Street to a B. He now sits on the subway rapidly approaching home. His thoughts are of Elaine and though he looks forward to seeing his family he misses being with her. The war is not even on his mind.

Sam has managed to draw the ire of the LT in command of the platoon due to his irritability. The platoon sergeant stepped in a smoothed things over and later spoke to Sam. “Look I know this shave tail thinks he knows it all, but he needs to learn. It's up to us NCOs to feed him the lessons that we've learned when the stuff hits the fan. We need to protect our guys and we can't do that without him being willing to learn and doing it fast. I need you to relax a bit and do your job, OK?” Sam nods and tells the other man that he's sorry, that he's been edgy since they boarded the ship.

Bill has counted 4 fast BBs, 2 CAs, a CL and 6 DDs in the SAG. If trouble comes calling and the IJN desires a brawl this force will be offering up a tough time of it. He writes to Sandy telling her about how he looks forward to seeing her again as soon as he is able. He asks about Dave then signs off. He adds the letter to the growing stack to be mailed at the first opportunity.

Another visit to the doctor and Sylvia is pronounced to be fit as a fiddle. She laughed at that and said, “Even if I'm rotund?”

What's left of the 1st Panzer Army reached German units.

The Red Army broke the German lines in the Crimea.

The USN MSWs continue sweeping the mine fields at Iwo Jima. The MSWs were attacked by 18 X Frances and 15 X Oscar. They were jumped by 36 Hellcats and 4 X Frances were shot down (2 damaged) and 13 X Oscar were splashed while 2 F6Fs were damaged. The MSWs were never in real danger despite fish being dropped by the planes.

Tavoy was bombed by 117 X B-24J, 43 X B-25J, 10 X Spitfire VIII and 22 X Thunderbolt II. No Japanese planes were in the air, but the AA fire damaged 6 Liberators and a Mitchell. The airfield was very heavily damaged, many secondary explosions were observed and troop losses were moderate. A sweep made up of 23 X P-38J arrived late, but they had nothing to do except look at the smoldering ruins below.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was futilely attacked by 5 Helens.

The SS Plunger, 71 miles NW of Koepang, attacked a lone AP and hit it 4 times with her deck gun and 2 torpedoes slammed into it also. It didn't take long for the AP to disappear forever.

Another Allied attack at Rangoon inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese while the attackers had moderately light casualties.

A vacated Moulmein was taken by the Allied forces there.

Gunny keeps telling the lads that when he knows something he might tell them, if they behave themselves. He doesn't know where or when, but he does know that there is no if for the 2nd Marine Division. They will be in combat and from all of the rest they've gotten it'll be soon enough.

Gil tells his mother to stop cooking so much and she tells him to be quiet and enjoy the meals while he can. His sisters want to know all about what he's been doing and how being in the Army is for him. “First off,” he says, “I'm in the Army Air Corps, you know with airplanes. I fly around, no walking. Secondly what I've been doing and where is top secret and that means that I can't tell anybody, especially you 2 blabbermouths.” Then they change the subject to Elaine and ask him how serious is it. “Serious,” is his answer.

Dave reads a story in the paper about a pilot flying off of an aircraft carrier. “Says here that he flies a Hellcat and that he's got 22 kills, making him the leading ace in the Pacific. I wonder how long that'll last?” Sandy gets upset with him for even suggesting that the other guys who were top aces are now dead. “I'm not cursing him honey, but it is a war and people get hurt.” He immediately wishes that he hadn't said that as she rushes from the room crying. Damn me, he thinks.

The Soviets entered Odessa as the Germans withdrew to the western bank of the Dniester River.

The RAF dropped 3,600 tons of bombs on northern France.

The Burma Road is open for Business and soon flights over The Hump will commence. Moulmein was doomed and a pullback to Tavoy was a good strategic move by Steve as the Allied troops are also advancing towards Bangkok.

The minefields at Iwo Jima continue to be swept. More MSWs arrived last night to assist in the massive task. A raid by 77 X SBD (4 damaged), 30 X SB2C (2 damaged), 54 X TBF (2 damaged), 33 X TBM (5 damaged) and 68 X F6F did light damage to the airfield, there were some secondary explosions and troop losses were negligible.

The SS Flounder, 68 miles NW of Vigan, hit an AP with a torpedo and before departing troops were seen going into the water. No fewer than 8 MSWs were seen in attendance of the AP.

Rahaeng was raided by 18 X B-24J and the AA fire damaged 9 of them. The airfield took light damage and casualties were very light.

Port Moresby was raided by 37 X B-17E and the flak damaged 9. The airfield was lightly damaged, a secondary explosion was seen and losses to the personnel was moderate.

The 123rd IJA Base Force near Rangoon was attacked by 100 X Liberator VI, 30 X B-25J, 12 X Spitfire VIII and 109 X Thunderbolt II. The unit had very heavy casualties.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was once again futilely attacked by 7 X Helen.

The Allied attack at Rangoon cost the Japanese very heavily and the Allied troops had heavy losses. 4 AA units have ceased to exist and the remaining Japanese are now surrounded, though they are nothing more than individuals who are starving, thirsty and barely able to resist.

The troops at Rangoon have been ordered to move to new locations with new objectives in the hope of successfully pushing the Japanese back and possibly cutting off the formations at Rahaeng.

Stalin sends a note to Tojo saying that it was wise not to interfere with the resupply of Petropavlovsk. He also asked for reconsideration of allowing Lend Lease to flow to a Soviet Pacific port. He gave assurances that only supplies , not fuel, planes or LCUs would be carried. Of course a negative reply is expected. In the meantime some combat formations are being shifted and their objectives changed in preparation of the inevitable offensive to reclaim what the Czarists lost in the past.

Gil has to admit that he missed his mother's cooking and that it's nice to be back in Brooklyn, if only for a little while. He wishes that he could catch a Yankee game, but they open on the road and his only shot at seeing baseball played might be when he gets back to Pittsburgh.

Sam wonders what's taking so long for the convoy to reach it's destination. “Ya know it's a long way to Tokyo,” one of the crew jokes. Somebody else answers that it's even a longer trip to San Francisco, but he wouldn't mind going there now. The crewman laughs and says, “Typical Marine.”

FDR can't believe the size of the Soviet forces facing the Germans and said that no matter what Moscow must be kept happy. “It's better for the Russians to bleed than our American boys,” says one of the generals in attendance. A couple of cross looks and General Marshall said that he'd better keep talk like that to himself, even if it is true.

Bill lies in his bunk staring at the ceiling wondering if the IJN will really sent a fleet out to oppose this operation or is this SAG just a precaution to protect the sweepers. He has a gut feeling that the answer is the later, especially after the hard learned lessons in the Solomon Islands.

The American delegate handed the Swiss a check for $1,000,000 as compensation for the accidental bombing of Schaffhausen.

The minefields at Iwo Jima continue to be swept.

The SS Sailfish, 14 miles N of Maumere, made a predawn surface attack on an AP. She scored a hit with her deck gun and 2 torpedoes also struck home. The vessels was heavily damaged, on fire and soldiers were jumping into the water.

Tavoy was attacked by 112 X Liberator VI, 7 X Hellcat II and 7 X Corsair IV. A lone George was aloft and made his lucky escape despite being damaged. The airfield was heavily damaged, the were many secondary explosions and personnel losses were moderate.

Rahaeng was bombed by 39 X B-25J, a Hellcat II and a Corsair IV. 5 Mitchells were damaged as they inflicted moderate damage to the airfield, some secondary explosions were reported and there were moderate casualties to the troops. The 145th IJA Base Force was attacked by 107 X Thunderbolt II and 7 X Spitfire VIII. 3 Thunderbolts were damaged as they caused heavy losses.

Gili Gili was swept by 72 X P-38J, but nobody was home.

Kai Island was raided by 133 X B-25J (2 downed, 11 damaged), 24 X Kittyhawk III and 18 X P-40N. There was light damaged done to the airfield, some secondary explosions were seen, a Betty was destroyed and troop losses were moderate.

Iwo Jima was attacked by 110 X SBD (1 shot down, 2 damaged), 29 X SB2C (3 damaged), 108 X TBF (1 downed, 4 damaged), 65 X TBM (1 damaged) and 95 X F6F. The airfield and port were lightly damaged, and there were many secondary explosions.

The SS Flounder, in the South China Sea, discovered an AK with a PG for an escort and made her attack. The AK was hit by a torpedo.

Gil's mom can't believe that he's actually heavier now than when he left home for the Army. “You like their food more than mine?” He says that's it's all of the exercise that he gets that makes him eat more. Army cooks shovel food at you and the taste isn't important he tells her.

The Helena continues to prowl with her pack of hunters waiting and watching, ready to strike. Bill has the feeling that only the planes will be getting in any punches, but a job is a job and he's not one to take this task lightly. The crew is primed and eager to engage the enemy. They want to do their jobs so that the war will end and then they can go back home.

Dave and Sandy eat dinner and she tells him what was in the 2 letters that she got from Bill today. Then talk turns to the war in general and Dave says that with the Germans and Japanese appearing to be on the run the end will be in sight soon. She smiles and says, “I hope you're right about that.”

Hitler allowed 230,000 German and Romanian troops to withdraw to the fortress of Sevastopol. The 4 day delay caused many unneeded losses.

Finland rejected Russian demands for ending the war.

The SS Flying Fish, 83 miles E of Truk, tried and failed to attack a lone AK.

The MSWs continue to sweep the mines at Iwo Jima. The island was attacked by 111 X SBD (2 damaged), 28 X SB2C (3 damaged), 106 X TBF, 66 X TBM (2 damaged) and 93 X F6F. The airfield and port were lightly damaged and there were a large number of secondary explosions.

The SS Flounder, 261 miles NW of Bataan, located a TK being escorted by 6 PGs and a PC. She managed to slip inside of the screen and hit the TK with 2 torpedoes.

Tavoy's airfield was very heavily heavily damaged by 100 X Liberator VI, 39 X B-24J and 12 X Spitfire VIII. The AA damaged 7 X Liberator VI and 2 X B-24J. There were a couple of secondary explosions observed, a George was burning at it's revetment and there were moderate personnel losses.

Rahaeng was raided by 3 X B-24J and 26 X B-25J of which flak damaged 9 of the former and 1 of the later types. The airfield was lightly damaged, a single secondary explosion was reported and ground troops sustained moderate casualties.

Amboina was swept by 64 P-38Js and they were challenged by 7 Tojos and 5 Tonys. In a quick and lopsided battle all of the Japanese fighters went down at the cost of a Lighting destroyed and another was damaged.

Stalin is overjoyed with the advances being made against the Germans. After being briefed he asks about Petropavlovsk and is told that the supply levels are high and that the next expected American convoy there will bring in assault troops and supplies. He grunts and says that is good.

Gil is enjoying being home, but it feels different. He can't put his finger on it, but he thinks that the change is in him. He take as walk along Cony Island Avenue and the air feels cold coming off of the ocean. He thinks of Elaine and wonders if she'd like living here.

Sam nervously paces back and forth and then heads topside. He sits on the deck and enjoys the sun. Soon I won't have time to enjoy anything, he thinks as the convoy continues to plod along towards Iwo Jima.

The 2nd Marines are patrolling their area and sure enough a lone Japanese soldier was killed after he tried to kill the last man in the formation with a bayonet. Gunny reminds his lads that the enemy will use whatever he can in the effort to kill Americans and die for their emperor. Slim has heard this all before and he knowingly nods as he lights up and inhales.

Simferopol, Feodosiya and Eupatoria fell to the Red Army.

An attack on Tavoy was made by 99 X Liberator VI and 13 X Corsair IV. 7 of the bombers were damaged by flak as they made their runs on the airfield which was heavily damaged. There were a couple of secondary explosions and personnel losses were moderate. The IJA 35th Brigade was hit by 48 X Thunderbolt II and 50 X P-38J. 7 Thunderbolts were damaged by the ground fire and the Japanese had moderate losses. Then the 124th IJA Base Force was struck by 58 X Thunderbolt II and 10 X Spitfire VIII. 5 Thunderbolts were damaged and the unit took moderate casualties.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force, which has virtually nobody left in the unit, was attacked by 10 Helens who did no damage.

The Japanese convoy near Paramushiro Jima was attacked by 21 X PB4Y and 2 MSWs took multiple bomb hits while another was nailed by 1. An AK was hit twice and all of the ships were burning and had various states of damage. In the afternoon 23 X PB4Y struck at the convoy and 2 AKs were each hit by a bomb and another took 2 hits. All were burning. Towards the end of the day it was reported that 2 MSWs went down.

Iwo Jima was attacked by 110 X SBD (6 damaged), 26 X SB2C, 97 X TBF (3 damaged), 67 X TBM and 69 X F6F. The airfield and port had light damage, there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were light.

Stalin has received the reply from Tokyo about the request for Lend Lease supplies to be allowed to use Soviet ports and he wasn't pleased by the negative answer. The Japanese also questioned the use of Petropavlask as a base for the attack by the American planes on their convoy. A reply was sent asking if Attu or Kiska may have been the source of the attack and Stalin promised to look into the matter. He also informed the Japanese that an agreement is in place with the Americans that enables them to fly recon missions from Petropavlask, only. He of course knows what's going on and he toasts with his generals to the sinking of Japanese vessels.

CDR Sheetz of the AS Fulton has been kept very busy with all of the subs coming and going in and out of Darwin. He has a reputation of getting the job done ever since the beginning of the war when he saved his ship. Now it kills him every time a damaged sub limps in and he can only patch it up and send it off to a yard. He knows that with the Allied advance through the Central Pacific pushing ever closer to the Japanese supply lines that his domain is rapidly degenerating into a backwater. No mater as he attends to doing his job the only way he knows, well.

The invasion force for Iwo Jima is loitering, awaiting the word to go in once the mines are cleared. Sam and his cohorts anxiously await the inevitable orders for the attack. “This waiting is worse than the fighting,” one guys says. Another chimes in with that he won't feel that way when he's climbing down a cargo net.

Combat

Allied MSWs continue to sweep the waters surrounding Iwo Jima and they reported that they observed an AK and a TK sinking. The cause of these events is unknown.

Tavoy was bombed by 96 X Liberator VI (7 damaged) and 13 X Corsair IV. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions and troop losses were moderate. At almost the same time the IJA 49th Division was visited by 46 X Thunderbolt II (3 damaged) and 57 X P-38J. The unit sustained light casualties. Another attack on the 49th followed a short time later, comprised of 43 X Thunderbolt II (7 damaged) and 8 X Spitfire. Once again the unit suffered light losses.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was hit by 10 Helens and as there is virtually nobody left except for a couple of officers left the bombs came down harmlessly.

The Japanese ships near Paramushiro Jima were attacked by 30 X PB4Y who managed to hit a PC with a bomb, an MSW took 4 bombs and 2 AKs were hit multiple times and were heavily damaged and burning. An MSW was reported as having gone down.

The Japanese response to Stalin's cable came swiftly and the Japanese protested the second day of attacks on their ships. They once again asserted that the attacks originated out of Petropavlovsk. They claim that the dragging of the Soviet's feet has resulted in the placing of all fighters in Manchuria on alert to defend their bases and that any Soviet recon flights will be destroyed. It further stated that if any Japanese planes entered Soviet airspace the results would be due to the Soviet's actions, not the Japanese. Stalin snorts and orders all of his forces to be put on a higher state of alert. “I want our fighters ready to deal with these animals and I want daily recon flights. If they want a war we are ready to give it to them. In the meantime tell them that the Americans have stood down at our insistence and that we have never broken the treaty with our Japanese friends. We expect them to respect the treaty and that we will defend ourselves if attacked.”

FDR is astounded that Stalin continues to ****foot around with the Japanese. “I know the Red Army and the Russian people have suffered greatly in the struggle against Germany, but this stinks to high heaven. Stalin wants us on the ground in France now yet he drags his feet with our mutual planning for an attack on the Japanese.” He sighs and asks about hearing some good news, which an aide gives to him about the CENPAC operations.

“Until the mines are gone there's not much for us to do except burn fuel and wait,” Ed tells his staff. “I'll be damned if I'm going to sail my Old Gals into mined waters to get chewed up. We'll exercise patience and then let all hell break loose on the Japanese defenders of Iwo Jima.” His mind is already shifting towards operations against Bonin.

The IJN is nowhere to be found and the USN has done an admirable job of defending the MSWs as they do their less than glorious work. Bill relaxes on the bridge with a mug of coffee as he listens to a report from the section chiefs. Everything is shipshape and the men are doing well with the strain of waiting for possible combat. He imagines that he's telling Sandy about life on the ship during the war and all of it's stress and strain. He finds that this helps to lessen the burden he feels.

Sam is itchy to get off of the transport and he told the guys that at least when they do they can take their pent up hostilities on the Japs.

Bangkok was under a CAP of 54 X Zeke when a sweep of 134 X P-38J pounced downing 46 of the Zekes while having 3 Lightnings shot down and 3 more damaged. Then came the main event as 60 X Liberator VI, 50 X B-25J, 47 X B-24J and 30 X Thunderbolt II arrived. AA fire damaged 4 X Liberator VI and 2 X B-24J. The port took very heavy damage, there were a great number of secondary explosions (many of which were fuel stocks) and personnel losses were light.

Lunga was swept by 24 X P-38J and they were met by 5 X Jack who destroyed 2 Lightnings and then escaped without loss. Later when 39 X B-24J appeared the Jacks greeted them and between the fighters and the flak they downed 2 and damaged 13 while a Jack was damaged. The port was lightly damaged and a secondary explosion was seen.

The IJA 49th Division at Tavoy was hit by 37 X Thunderbolt II (8 damaged) for light losses.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was pounced on by 10 Helens and the few remaining officers barely took notice as the planes attacked useless piles of unmanned junk.

Iwo Jima was struck by 106 X SBD (3 damaged), 28 X SB2C (2 damaged), 108 X TBF (4 damaged), 67 X TBM (1 damaged) and 76 X F6F Hellcat. There was light damage to the airfield and port, many secondary explosions and light casualties to the troops.

Gil is leaving tomorrow for Pittsburgh and his sisters tease him a bit about being in love. His mother is unhappy that he's not spending his leave with them and his father remains strangely silent about it all.

Elaine got a call from Gil's uncle and she knows that Gil is leaving Brooklyn tomorrow. She is understandably excited and her sister has a laugh about “Lover Boy's” return.

It turns out that the invasion force has been loitering in the Saipan area. “And here I thought we were ready to go,” says Sam. What he doesn't know is that until yet another convoy loading at Guam joins them and the mines have been swept at Iwo they will continue to loiter.

Ed is chomping at the bit, but still the mines are there. The damned mines, he thinks. He doesn't realize it, but he obsesses with the mines because there's nothing he can do about them and they can destroy his ships.

The amount of work at the yard doesn't slack off a bit. If anything there seems to be a growing line of waiting ships. Gene's boss asked him if he wanted to work the overnight shift today. Gene took the work, knowing that it wasn't a request. The money is great and with his little sister's birthday soon maybe he can find something nice to buy for her.

Yalta was captured by the Soviets.

The USN MSWs continue sweeping the mines at Iwo Jima. It appears that the job is done so the MSWs will replenish and then move to Bonin.

Kwajalein was swept by 24 X P-47D, but the Japanese had no planes up.

Gili Gili had no CAP aloft when 47 X B-17E (5 damaged), 48 X B-24D (6 damaged), 95 X B-24J (1 downed, 5 damaged) and their escort of 72 X P-38J arrived. The AA fire did what it could but the American bombers unloaded, pounding the airfield for heavy damage, a large number of secondary explosions, 2 Dinahs destroyed and moderate troop losses.

The IJA 49th Division at Tavoy was targeted by 34 X Thunderbolt II (1 downed, 5 damaged) and 49 X P-38J. Japanese losses were extremely light. Later in the morning 40 X B-25J (6 damaged) and 31 X Thunderbolt II attacked the airfield doing light damage to it, triggering a secondary explosion and inflicting light casualties on the ground personnel.

The Japanese AP at Kwajalein had the misfortune of being docked at the time that 8 X PB4Y attacked. There were 4 bomb hits on the ship and troops were seen jumping off of her to avoid the fires raging on the heavily damaged vessel.

Amboina was swept by 64 X P-38J, but they returned home unopposed.

The invasion force is still loading at Guam and then it will join the rest of the invasion force at Saipan. From there the ships will make for Iwo Jima.

The British Foreign Office banned all coded messages from foreign embassies and diplomatic bags will be censored. Only fighting allies are exempted.

Balaclava was taken by the Soviet Army.

Bangkok was swept by 72 X P-38J and the Japanese threw 30 X Zeke and 11 X George at them. 10 Zekes and all of the Georges were shot down at no cost to the Allies.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, about 42 miles SW of Sining, was bombed by 7 X Helen and the Chinese had very light casualties.

The Allied TF 28 miles SW of Bonin was attacked by 11 X Judy, 5 X Jill and 6 X Betty. The CAP of 11 X F4F-4 and 148 X F6F destroyed all of the Japanese planes before they were in range of the ship's AA envelope. 2 Hellcats were damaged. Later another attack of 2 X Judy, 2 X Jill and 3 X Betty tried and failed to pierce the CAP of 133 Hellcats as all of the would be attackers were splashed at the cost of 2 damaged fighters.

Bonin was attacked by 83 X SBD (13 damaged), 28 X SB2C (1 downed, 2 damaged) and 1 X F6F. They hit the airfield for moderate damage, some secondary explosions were reported and there were moderate troop losses.

Iwo Jima was raided by 90 X TBF (1 downed, 1 damaged), 67 X TBM (1 damaged) and 72 X F6F. The port was lightly damaged, many secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were extremely light.

The Japanese AP 81 miles SW of Kwajalein was attacked by 8 X PB4Y and 6 bombs struck it. Reports of soldiers diving into the water to escape the flames were reported.

Bill stares at the new BBs that Helena is sailing with and sighs. He knows that they are excellent AA platforms, but their 16” tubes are relics, dangerous but still relics. The carriers are the future of naval war, he thinks. He heads for his cabin and some much needed rest. Sleep has become increasingly difficult for him.

Sam has reacted rather poorly to being confined below decks. He's beginning to wonder who the real enemy is the Navy or the Japs. It's stuffy and hot, the places reeks and the thought of battle has everyone edgy. This is not a healthy situation.

Sandy hasn't received a letter for a few days now and wonders when the next one will arrive. Dave is smart enough to keep his mouth shut after the last episode. People seem to be tiring of the war and the growing number of casualties is an ever increasing burden. Yesterday one of Sandy's friends lost a brother to the war. She prays every night for Bill and the millions of souls engaged in this mess.

Gil was surprised that Elaine's family has made a big deal out of his birthday. He has turned 22 and he wonders if he'll ever see 23. Elaine's mother made a delicious meal and she even baked a cake for him. Elaine insists that he wait to open his present until after eating the cake. Later that night he opened the box box and in it was a pair of woolen socks and a scarf. “It must be cold flying up there in the clouds,” Elaine declared.

The SS Skate, 86 miles SE of Kagoshima, located an MSW and 4 PCs and though she tried to get into position an attack was never launched. She later reported a CV moving to the SW.

Bangkok was swept by 59 X P-38J and they were met by 31 X Zeke and 9 X George. In the ensuing mayhem 16 Zekes were shot down and 6 Georges were destroyed at the cost of losing 4 Lightnings and having 4 more damaged.

Koepang was raided by 138 X B-24D, 48 X B-24J and 71 X P-38J in attendance. 10 Zekes and 10 Jacks gave battle and the lightnings destroyed 7 Zekes and all of the Jacks at no cost to themselves. The AA fire downed a B-24D (14 damaged) and damaged 3 of the B-24Js. The airfield was subjected to extremely heavy damaged, a great many secondary explosions were observed and personnel losses were put a heavy.

Bonin's airfield was attacked by 80 X SBD (4 destroyed, 11 damaged), 28 X SB2C (9 damaged) and 76 X F6F. The base was moderately damaged, a single secondary explosion was seen and troop casualties were light.

Iwo Jima's port was lightly damaged by 90 X TBF (4 damaged), 3 X TBM (3 damaged) and a single Hellcat. There were a few secondary explosion and casualties to the troops was placed at extremely light.

It is expected that 2 invasion TFs will depart Guam tonight and join with more ships at Saipan for the run to Iwo Jima. Another TF at Guam has orders to commence loading of support units as soon as the others depart.

Gil sits on the porch talking to Elaine's dad and they both agree that it's to bad the the Pirates have opened the season on the road. Gil says, “I'll be gone before they return to for their home opener.”

Sam lies in his bunk staring at the mattress just inches from his nose. “They should rename this ship The Ritz,” he says. It draws a chuckle from somewhere close by and then he adds, “I'll have to take this out on the Japs as it's because of them that I'm here.” Now there are comments of agreement. Maybe we'll get going soon, he hopes.

Bill observes that there are fighters constantly roving overhead and their being there gives him a certain piece of mind. So far the USN's CAPs have proved to be impenetrable. He leaves the bridge and returns to his cabin. Sitting at his desk he puts pen to paper and before he realizes it there is a 3 page letter to Sandy. He adds it to the pile after placing it into an envelope and numbering it.

Gene is pooped after working a double shift. On the way home he stops in a bar for a beer. Only 2 days to go and he'll be off all of Sunday. He needs the rest, but there's more work than the yard can handle. In the bar there are a few men sitting at a table with a wounded Marine. Gene sits at the bar and listens to the talk. The Marine was hit by shrapnel and he claims to still have enough metal in him that if somebody shot him the bullet would just bounce off. That draws some laughs and they continue to pound down the booze. Gene finishes his beer, pays the bartender and continues on his way home. He's looking forward to a nice hot shower and some sleep.

A Judy attacked the SS Apogon 317 miles SW of Tori Shima and the sub has reported that it was hit. She will now make for Saipan with moderate systems damage and flooding. As long as the pumps work she should survive.

A USN TF made up of the CL Raleigh and 4 DDs made a night time attack on the Japanese shipping near Paramushiro Jima. 3 AKs were attacked and were hit with heavy gunfire and a torpedo struck 1 of them. 2 AKs went down and the other was burning as the attackers retired unscathed.

Tavoy was attacked by 120 X Liberator VI, 55 X B-25J, 3 X Corsair IV, 12 X Spitfire VIII and 3 X P-38J. A lone Jack appeared and was promptly damaged as it fled. AA fire damaged 2 Liberators and 3 Mitchells while the airfield was subjected to extremely heavy damage, many secondary explosions were reported and casualties were placed at heavy.

Bangkok was swept by 72 X P-38J and they were engaged by 27 X Zeke and 3 X George. 5 Zekes were shot down while another was damaged and 2 Georges were splashed. A Lightning was lost in the fight.

Then 21 X B-24J appeared and proceeded to mine the harbor unmolested by the Japanese.

Lautem was hit by 139 X B-25J, 30 X Kittyhawk III and 19 X P-40N. The port was lightly damaged, there were many secondary explosions and personnel losses were light while 2 bombers were destroyed and 17 were damaged by the flak.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was struck by 10 Helens and since there is nothing left to hit save a few men no damage was done.

Bonin's airstrip was the target for 71 X SBD (2 downed, 8 damaged), 26 X SB2C (6 damaged) and 73 X F6F. The target was moderately damaged, there were a couple of secondary explosions and losses were thought to have been moderate.

Iwo Jima's port was the object of attention for 88 X TBF (2 destroyed, 2 damaged), 67 X TBM (1 downed, 5 damaged) and a lone F6F. The port took light damage, many secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were light.

The invasion force will depart Saipan tonight, target Iwo Jima. A diversionary attack on Yap is being put together and the launch will come after the attack on Bonin is made.

To date Stick has 27 combat missions to his credit and no kills. Tomorrow will be his first ground attack mission, Yap is the target. He's trying very hard to maintain his view of things, but he aches to get a kill. “If you get one then you'll just want more,” taunts one of the other pilots. “It's like sex, you don't know what you're missing until that first one and then you'll just hunger for more.” The tent that serves as their mess is rippling with laughter and Stick enjoys the fun.

Gil and Elaine took time to stroll through Schenley Park today and then returned in time for her to help set the table for dinner. Elaine's dad and Gil spent the time after dinner debating the qualities of their respective baseball teams and their history. It's an argument that's tough to beat a Gil's Yankees have managed to win more than their share of titles.

Combat

The SS Growler, 14 miles NW of Paramushiro Jima, caught a lone AK and hit it with 3 torpedoes. It is suspected that this was a survivor of the air and naval attacks in the area. The AK was reported as sunk by the sub.

Ed's Old Gals hit Iwo Jima with a naval bombardment in the morning. Japanese gunners fought back hitting the CA Portland a few times. No damage was done to any facilities, but there were very heavy casualties to the troops. A little later in the morning 45 X B-24J arrived and 1 was damaged by AA. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were a large number of secondary explosions and casualties were placed at light. 17 X TBF (4 damaged) and a lone Hellcat then attacked doing no harm.

Buna's port was moderately damaged by 38 X B-17E. There were a couple of secondary explosions and personnel losses were light.

Near Kwajalein an AP was caught by 6 X PB4Y, 1 of which was damaged. A bomb found the mark. An AK was attacked later by 3 X PB4Y who managed a bomb hit that started a fire.

Bangkok was swept by 58 X P-38J and the Japanese countered with 14 X Zeke and 3 X George. 4 Zekes and all of the Georges went down in the battle while all of the Lightnings returned home unharmed.

Yap was struck by 13 X SBD and 14 X P-47D who did very light damage to the airstrip.

The RN convoy about 251 miles W of Rangoon was attacked by 6 X Frances and an AK took a torpedo hit, setting it on fire. 2 of the Japanese planes were damaged by the AA.

The Japanese tried to hit the RN ships 246 miles NW of Andaman Island with 14 X Frances, but a CAP of 14 X Hellcat II and 11 X Corsair IV were on hand to greet the attackers. 12 of the Japanese planes were splashed while 5 Hellcat IIs and 2 Corsair IVs were damaged. No ships were ever in peril. Another attack of 3 X Frances then appeared and the CAP damaged 1 of them as the Japanese turned tail and ran for their lives, dumping their fish harmlessly in the middle of nowhere.

Ed sits on the bridge looking over photos taken after today's bombardment of Iwo and he decides that he can't tell what was a valid target and what wasn't, let alone if it was destroyed. The good news was that the mines really are gone and now the island lays open for an invasion.

Stick found that a ground attack mission was very different that flying CAP. Still he want air to air combat, not fighting down in the dirt.

Elaine convinced Gil to go shopping with her and he got a taste of a female being frustrated at almost every turn. When a store had what she wanted it was the wrong size or color. She finally gave up and they stopped at a soda fountain for a welcomed rest. Gil had his eyes opened today as he comes from a poor family and Elaine is used to having money to burn.

Sam is primed and ready to go as a sailor told him that they were no longer circling. Excitement tempered by fear runs through the ship and the men quietly begin to attend to their gear. Sam has stripped the M1911 that he obtained a while back from an officer who no longer had need of it. He starts cleaning it as he thinks that being loaded for bear is a good thing since Japanese take lots of killing.

Bomber Command used the “J” bomb, liquid incendiary, for the first time, hitting Brunswick.

Mussolini and Hitler met near Salzburg.

Tito's Partisans stormed the island of Korcula and captured 800 Germans.

The Russians broke off the talks with the Finns.

There was considerable alarm on the part of the RN commanders and the lack of recon flights warning of this force had it's negative results, though it could have been much worse.

Tavoy was targeted by 48 X B-24J, 52 X B-25J and 13 X Corsair IV. 7 of the Liberators were damaged as the airfield was heavily damaged. There were a couple of secondary explosions and Japanese casualties were moderate. The IJA 49th Division was hit by 39 X Thunderbolt II (1 shot down, 2 damaged), 28 X P-38J (3 damaged) and 10 X Spitfire VIII. Troop losses were light. Another raid on the 49th Division was made by 64 X Thunderbolt II (10 damaged) and 12 X Spitfire VIII. Losses to the troops were light.

Andaman Island was attacked by 117 X Liberator VI and 48 X B-29. 5 of the Liberators were damaged by AA. The airfield sustained very heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions, 6 X Frances and a Dinah were destroyed and personnel losses were moderate. This was the first combat for the B-29, forever to be called “The Big Silver Birds” by the Japanese (aka Steve).

Koepang was raided by 20 X B-24J who were met by a lone Jack that didn't press home an attack. 7 planes were damaged by the flak. The airfield was lightly damaged and casualties were heavy.

Yap was struck by 2 X P-39D who did no damage. The 103rd IJNAF Base Force was attacked by 21 X F4U-1D and 2 X P-47D. No losses were inflicted or sustained. This was the Flying Deuces' first ground attack mission. Later 13 X SBD and 11 X P-47D did light damage to the airfield and departed safely.

Lunga was swept by 24 X P-38J, but they encountered no opposition.

The Allied PG 241 miles NW of Andaman Island was being protected by 6 X P-38J when 6 X Zeke and 4 X Frances appeared. 4 X Zeke and a Frances were splashed while another Frances was damaged. The ship was hit by a torpedo and suffered heavy damage and fires. The PG had to be scuttled as her pumps failed leaving her helpless against the flooding and fires.

Kwajalein's port was struck for light damage by 24 X P-47D, of which 5 were damaged by ground fire.

Lunga's port was hit by 15 X B-24J (5 damaged) for light damage and light troop losses.

The SS Tinosa, 72 miles E of Butuan, spied an AP being escorted by 3 X PGs and made her attack, hitting the target with 2 torpedoes. The AP was heavily damaged and burning and many soldiers were seen going overboard before the ship went down. The escorts heroically fished men out of the water despite knowing a sub was around.

The invasion force passes Pagan on it's way to Iwo Jima. It carries the following assault units:
1 Marine Division
25 Division
33 Division
38 Division
34 Eng Rgt
2 Marine Armored Amphib Bn
637 Tank Destroyer Bn
763 Tank Bn
767 Tank Bn
708 Armored Amphib Bn
Some support units and supply ships are also part of the invasion force.

Stick returned to base feeling down as he totally missed hitting anything on the attack staged against Yap. He later finds out that the rest of his squadron also came up empty. The squadron CO tells them to buck up as tomorrow is another day and weather permitting they'll go again.

Dawn brings an amazing sight to Sam who has managed to get permission to go topside. He sees an ocean full of ships as far as the eye can see and he supposes there are plenty more that he can't see. “It won't be long now,” he says aloud to himself. A deckhand says that he doesn't envy him and he and Gil engage in conversation and a smoke. “Being penned up below is almost as bad as fighting the Japs,” says Sam. The sailor says that he wouldn't trade places with Sam for all the tea in China. Sam wonders to himself about being on a burning ship.

Combat

The SS Cobia, 139 miles SE of Kagoshima, was relentlessly attacked by 5 PCs, who scored many hits. The sub has moderate systems damage and heavy flooding. She will try for Saipan.

Victoria Point was visited by 6 X P-38J who managed to chase off the lone Jack in the air before they returned to base.

Tavoy was bombed by 114 X Liberator VI (5 damaged), 51 X B-25J (2 damaged), 45 X B-24J and 15 X Corsair IV. The airfield took extremely heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were light. The IJA 49th Division was jumped by 26 X Thunderbolt II and 10 X Spitfire VIII. 5 Thunderbolts were damaged and the Japanese had light losses. Another attack soon followed as 55 Thunderbolt IIs and 9 Spitfire VIIIs came on. 8 Thunderbolts were damaged and the Japanese sustained moderate losses.

Andaman Island underwent an attack by 28 X B-29, 1 of which was damaged by AA fire. The airfield was very lightly damaged.

Dili's port was targeted by 139 X B-24D (5 damaged), 48 X B-24J (2 damaged) and 71 X P-38J. The port was heavily damaged, a very large number of secondary explosions were triggered and personnel losses were light.

Lautem was visited by 62 X B-25J and 13 X Kittyhawk II. 2 bombers went down and 14 more were damaged. The airfield was lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were observed and casualties were placed at moderate.

Bonin's airfield was moderately damaged by 35 X B-24J (9 damaged). Troop casualties were thought to have been light.

Yap was hit by 14 X P-39D and 9 X P-47D to no effect. The 103rd IJNAF Base Force was attacked by 21 X F4U-1D and 2 X P-47D. The Japanese had light casualties. Another strike comprised of 13 SBDs and 13 Thunderbolts then did light damage to the airfield and caused a secondary explosion.

Gili Gili was raided by 95 X B-24J and the flak damaged 13 of them. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were moderate.

Port Moresby was the target for 41 X B-17E (6 damaged) and 46 X B-24D (5 damaged). They caused heavy damage to the airfield, many secondary explosions were reported and troop casualties were placed at very heavy.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 10 Helens and there were no losses on either side.

The Flying Deuces are being kept very busy with either flying CAP or ground attack missions. Stick makes a bet with the guys that as soon as another island west of Ulithi opens up they'll be sent there. Before you know it everybody is in on it and the pool has grown to over $500. Gil has picked July 16 as their transfer date. Whoever gets the closest will win the growing pot.

Sam realizes that he's smoking more than ever before and he wonders if it's his nerves or nothing else to do. “Probably both,” he says out loud and it draws responses from around him. All of the men are edgy and the NCOs are keeping busy preventing and breaking up fights that break out over the tiniest and dumbest of things. Just then the guy in the next bunk breaks breeze and a collective moan arises from the men in the area. “Thanks,” says Sam, “Like it doesn't stink bad enough in here already.” That brings chuckles from the guys.

Gil is finding it increasingly rough not to think about his impending return to the AAC. His mind is obsessing on what they have in store for the Lucky 11. Elaine notices his distraction and asks. He tells her and she says, “Let's just enjoy the time we have together now and worry about everything else later.”

Britain banned foreign travel.
