Misty rain for half the day but no lightning. I crushed a fairway wood about 250 yds right onto the green, 20 feet from the pin. I thought breifly about joining the Senior Tour until I got tired by about the 14th hole and wiffed on a tee shot.

Yep, been there. I'll be about 3 over after a bunch of holes and then I'll take a wretched 10. I tell the wife "I remain in no danger of showing up on Sunday afternoon television".

The good news is I don't have to worry if my shirt is wrinkled.

My favorite golfism is to let someone really ardent about the game overhear me telling a buddy "It was OK, I shot a 62." - PAUSE - "Did even better on the back 9."

The "Snowman" is your friend.

Wyndham: Moderately successful night raids. JJ has a few Tojos up in the air to meet us but to no account. The B-24's straggle in filghts and squadrons for a few hours. Vals and Kates and Nicks are on the ground. I think the reason that Netties aren't going after our ships at Gove is there are none at Wyndham. Dec 24 will be a daytime attack on Wyndham. Say goodbye to some B-24's. There is now an air HQ at Gove but, it appears, the torp reloads won't fit on a C-47 so they were sitting in Normanton last turn. Too bad, we might have to settle for SBD's at Gove. Normally, this would be fine but our good squadrons are already on the carriers.

Koumac: Amphbious landing at Koumac begins. No shore guns..as expected.

Port Hedrand: The B-17's are all gone. Will need more of the mediums on airfield attack. Corunna has no salted fish heads..or anything left behind. We will have to fry in suppries. Looks like sitzkrieg for a while. A few Bettys went after our transports and were intercepted by extremely fatigued F4F pilots.

Funny how anxiety dreams change with our developmental stages.

Missing the school bus when you are 7.

Going to school in your underwear in high school.

Forgetting to put on surgical gloves during neurosurgery in medical school.

Last night I had a dream I went in for a colonoscopy and the sign on the office door said "Queers and Faeries Welcome!" "Wow, how inclusive", I thought. "I hope they do a good job on the instruments".

Next thing I know the guy says "Spread 'em".

"I have to spread my own ass cheeks?", I thought. "What happened to professional courtesy?"

After some mumbling to himself he says, "This quite chaotic"

"OH ****! I FORGOT TO DO THE PREP!"

******Eastern Shore Bathurst Is., 03:20, Dec. 23, 1942(c)*******

Isaac $JE&*I^*M, a Tawi Tawi in his Sunday best: Boats take away all mines we make, Father.

Fr. O'Brien: That is fine, my son. What is important is the Tawi Tawi have a new well and brand new Daihatsu motor barge courtesy of General Yamashita. This war has been a Godsend for the Tawi. Now, let us bow our heads and pray. <they bow their heads> Please, Lord, we ask you that the Allied landing has moderate difficulty, not a disaster you understand, but some difficulty, and that the Little Yellow Bastards fight well so that the seige will be a long one and that the Tawi Tawi Marina is a commercial success. And, Dear Lord, we pray it will be a hot season so the ice cream shop meets revenue expectations....

Ice cream in Tawi-Tawi? What are they milking - coconuts? sea cows? pilot whales?

I think Mr. Chang thinks the recession is over. He is repairing his tennis court(s). Yes, I said court(s). One hardcourt and one clay.

He asked me what kind of plants I wanted on his hill across the street as he is redoing some landscpaing. I told him to use mass plantings of drought tolerant stuff planted in drifts, maybe rock rose and lantana or Mexican sage..in whites and lavenders. Can I say "lavender" in an After Action Report?

Anyway, I don't think he knew what the **** I was talking about. He asked, "dlifts"? I tried to explain. He just nodded. I am pretty sure a big truck is going to pull up with 500 4 inch potted petunias in 18 colors and the poor things will get nuked in 5 days by the sun.

Meanwhile, one of his trucks couldn't make the turn and crushed my lantanas and lavender. I was going to say something but decided it is better to resist my natural inclinations and not be an a-****.

Only when referring to the plant, not the alleged colour.

Edward Fox played Horrocks in that movie He was the Thirty Corps commander.

Michael Caine played the commander of the lead tank unit which IIRC was an Irish Guards unit.

Great scene, after watching it and hearing the officer who walked up to converse with him at the end call him Joe I remembered the officer's name J. O. E. Vandeleur (SP?)....as least vaguely remembered that is.

Great movie!

At least I didn't make the major faux pas of referring to it as 30th corps

and after checking I did indeed get the Irish Guards commander right from memory, Brigadier J.O.E. Vandeleur, DSO that is!

Chickenboy, you are dating yourself with that reference to R. Jeremy. As I understand it he never led in the field - his fitness report said he was only able to command women ...

I was at a steak house in San Diego and some chubby guy that looked like Mario from the video game tried to come on to Stalker Girl by having his friends introduce him as "Ron Jeremy". That was the closest I came to fisticuffs since my neighbor built his stupid $10,000 mailbox on my side of the property line....well...except for my daughter's ex-boyfriend..I forgot about that.

But he did say, "start the lavender!"*

You should have pointed to his friends and indicated that you were pleased to meet Luigi and the ape (gesturing at one of them) too. And then asked to see his bag of gold goins. On second thought, that would have gotten you a lot closer to fisticuffs...

hehe.....all this MG talk is making me want to fire up a game. Before getting addicted to this monster I spent a couple of years hooked on the tactical series that is now known as Command Ops (you'll find it further up on the forum list here) starting with the MG installment. I ended up getting my name added to the beta tester list (closed beta) for the Battles from the Bulge installment. In fact the only AAR I have ever done on these forums is still stickied at the top of the AAR list on that forum. I probably have a half dozen different MG board games published in the 70s and 80s.

At the dawn of the transistor, Matrix had Battlefields in development. The Market Garden map was cool. 1 km hexes. Company level. Not sure what happened. Somebody was kidnapped by the Gypsies I think. Counters were nice too but you can't really tell from the JPG conversion.

Hadn't seen that one. I have played a couple of MMPs games though. Played the Tunisia and the East Front games with some old buddies a few years ago. My 200+ board game collection that I started amassing in the mid 70s mostly collects dust now......(sigh).

********Aboard YMS-101, 30 nm E Bathurst Is., 19:20, December 24, 1942(c)*******

"Sparks" McElroy: Message from Adm. Somerville, sir.

LCDR Specht: Read it.

"Sparks" McElroy: It reads, "Commander TF 308. You are ordered to conduct mine sweeping operations in Assembly Area Nairobi after sunset. If enemy coastal guns encountered in Darwin environs you are ordered to destroy them. End message".

LCDR Specht: Destroy them? It actually says that?

"Sparks" McElroy: Afraid so, sir.

LCDR Specht: This is why I didn't want to be assigned to a 1 VP vessel. We are "fungible", "Sparks".

"Sparks" McElroy: Fungible, sir? That sounds bad.

LCDR Specht: It is. Even a 40 year old, 10 Kt rust bucket with a Fillipino crew is worth 2 or 2 times what we are. Say, "Sparks", what is your real name?

"Sparks" McElroy: Sparks, sir.

LCDR Specht: No kidding? Never met anyone with that name. Why the quotation marks, then?

"Sparks" McElroy: My parents were hippies, sir.

LCDR Specht: Did you say hippies...........
