Manila is also bombed now but we are not building up forts there as I am going to abandon the city as soon as all reinforces will have arrived there... the reinforcements are the only reason why I am currently holding the city with about 800 av, easily enough to hold back any Japanese attempt to take the base in the coming weeks as the enemy troops South of Manila look rather weak... more or less the rest of my troops on Luzon are holding Clark Field which will be my line of defense with great defensive terrain and forts that are nearly at level 4... on Luzon, supply will be the deciding factor...

see below the situation around Balikpapan, this is where it seems to be really heating up... we have spotted two enemy task forces, but I have no real clue about how those task forces reall look like... guess it will be an amphib convoy bound for Balikpapan with at least one SAG as cover... my patrols weren't able to identify any bigger ships so it will be either me being surprised tomorrow or Cuttlefish having a bad hair day as I have Force Z, my two USN carriers, Boise and Co and my Dutch cruisers ready to strike at Soerabaja and Force Z will lead the carrier TF and the Boise TF to a position five hexes SW of Balikpapan to be able to strike both at any invasion of Balikpapan and other shipping in the area... this could be quite spectacular if we catch some bigger IJN stuff, hopefully no IJN BB around as our bombs won't hurt them and I have set none of my TBD to attack with torps as those are useless anyway... but everything else than a BB would take serious damage if my SBD will catch it with 1000lb bombs...

what we do not know is the location of KB which hasn't been spotted for quite some time so if I would be Cuttlefish, I would support any bigger operation with KB as he knows my carriers just have to be around Australia or the SRA after their appearance in the Solomons weeks ago... if KB will pop up South of Balikpapan or somewhere close to Makassar then my carriers will be toast and probably Force Z as well... also I hope not to run into any enemy SAGs with Force Z or my carriers as this could also mean damage or losses that I would like to avoid...

the first shock about a carrier strike quickly changed into confidence when it was obvious that it is not KB but only a CVL or two... what I feared and didn't like was my carrier TF reacting towards the enemy (one hex) despite being set to not react at all so my carrier group ended up one hex East without Forze Z and the Boise SAG...

the enemy strike was easily handled by our Cap with halve a dozen Zeroes and all Kates being shot down...

our two carriers launch a full strike (minus one TBD squadron that lost the main formation) but as the attack goes in weather situation turned into as worse as it could be which saves the enemy CVL group from total disaster... if there is no afternoon strike then this will mean the enemy will probably escape with all his ships as we are not going to pursue them East as this would just be too dangerous... the whole mission was planned as going in, strike and retreat back to Java again...

when I look at the strike coming from the CVL and at the number of fighters on Cap I wonder where are all the aircraft those flight decks are able to carry...

usually I don't expect my carriers to launch a strike both in the morning and afternoon phase but this time I'm lucky enough and we not only launch a second strike, also the weather is great and a perfect strike comes in with the enemy CVL not being able to launch any fighters anymore... mostly 1000lb bombs slam into the enemy ships with Zuiho taking bomb hit 4-9 and Ryujo taking another two 1000lb bombs after being hit by two in the morning already... Chiyoda and the heavy cruisers take a mix of 500lb and 1000lb bombs, I expect Haguro to be done while Myoko and Nachi may have a fair chance to make it... I don't expect the CVL to have a chance of getting back to a big enough port to be safed while none are reported sunk today...

not only the loss of the CVL will hurt Cuttlefish but also the damage done to the enemy heavy cruiser force as he already lost four CA in the Solomons early on and now another three are hit hard... needless to say, I really enjoyed this turn but the appearance of KB not that far off this engagement showed me how much risk it involved... all my TF will do a full speed move W and further on SW towards Perth to keep a safe distance between them and KB if Cuttlefish decides to move in KB at full speed (this is what I would do)...

one of the SBD squadrons attack the two Kongos in the hex next to the CVL and I'm really glad the targetting routine worked in my favour this time launching the main strikes against the CVL TF and not the BB TF... not sure if the IJN CVL also reacted, if they didn't then it was a mistake not having them in the same hex as the Kongos as I am sure this would have meant a lot of my bombers going after the BB instead of the CVL and CA... as you can see, the 1000lb bomb hits did absolutely nothing hitting the BB... this is where I see a problem with reducing bomb effect as we are not back to WITP's immunity of BB against bomb hits... like I have stated earlier, I would try to dramatically recuce hit rate while really increasing damage from hits...

Here's KB's position. A full speed move would it bring into position SE of Makassar, too close to Java for my taste to keep my carriers at Soerabaja so my task forces are going to move full speed towards Perth, depending on KB's position tomorrow we will either do another full speed move or going back to mission speed if KB is not closing in. Considering it's only January 42 and that we only have two carriers operating against the enemy we have really been succesful so far, first sinking four heavy cruisers in the Solomons and now probably sinking two CVL and hitting another three CA hard. As you can see, we also have quite a couple of subs (all with working torps) in the area and every sub has been ordered to intercept the surely retreating enemy ships and the Makassar Strait is a perfect hunting ground to kill cripples.

Even if we would not have spotted KB today we would have retired as there is always the risk of subs (several spotted today) and a Betty/Nell strike coming from one of the enemy's forward bases. My goal at this stage of the war is to do damage without suffering real damage (means sunk ships) in return.

Horrible losses for the IJN and the game has barely begun. I had a similar engagement in my game (2 US CVs vs Mini KB) and considered myself lucky to lose a CVL and 2 CVE whilst sinking the Enterprise in return. If anything sinking those CAs is more important than the CVLs..........

I know you won't risk it, but I think you could hang around and finish off those cripples and still get away before the KB could intervene.

I wouldn't be pleased with those losses as the IJN commander (Cuttlefish isn't either of course). The two CVL alone didn't have much chance vs the two USN CV. Whole mini KB with three (4?) CVL and the CVEs would be easily enough to be a serious threat for two USN CV though as the 54 fighters on the USN CV aren't enough to stop anything bigger than a 20 ac strike when the fighters also have to escort their own strikes. I had VMF-211 on one of the carriers which gave me another 18 fighters after picking it up from Wake and filling it out with aircraft and pilots but that still only makes it around 70 fighters in total. So if you see two dozen Kates coming in at an early CV TF with only two CV you might end up being shot up badly if weather is good.

I would consider the risk of staying around as near suizide as KB could perfectly maneuver into a position to strike into the Makassar Strait which would be where I would have to place my carriers if I would want to strike at the damaged and retreating East ships. Not only this, Northern Borneo can be filled with at least 70-100 Betty/Nells that could be flown in in one turn. Both things would be what I would do if I had to take over the IJ command for the next turn. If I had IJ command of the last turn I would not have sent in my CVL alone though with KB being rather close by but this is easier said than done of course with hindsight. Both the CA losses in the Solomons and the little disaster in the Makassar Strait this turn could have been avoidable but to be honest, they also could have gone perfectly well if my carriers wouldn't have been in position at exactly the right time. If KB would have been spotted yesterday in the position we have spotted it today, I would not have sent in my carriers but would have sent them towards Cocos Island or so, so it pretty much was all or nothing.

But both incidents remind me of what I usually try to follow, support your operations with the biggest available assets if you think there is only a slight chance of running into trouble. Not knowing where my carriers are it would be essential to support such operations with KB IMO. Not really a biggy, move KB into the area, support several invasions and if needed, move it elsewhere to do the same thing there.

The air losses of the first carrier engagement of the war. Both the Zeroes and Kates were hit hard but as you can see, there were no high ground losses or op losses of the CVL squadrons, which means both CVL were still afloat at the end of the turn. There were high Pete and Jake losses, guess that might be Chiyoda going down. Might also be one of the heavily damaged CA gone down already.

To be fair to him running the CVs at high speed can be risky, especially if the DDs have already used half their fuel. I have moved the KB at full speed and been horrified to find they have used up almost all their ops points in refuelling the escorts at the end of the run.........

Vindicators work just fine, no real difference to the SBD. The Devastators, well, the Avengers are better of course but if you use the TBD for bomb attacks they also carry 2 x 500lb bombs and if your pilots are ok then they usually hit quite well from 6000ft.

I use full speed moves a lot, especially to show up unexpected and to get out quickly if needed. While more than one day of full speed quickly may become a problem, one day usually works quite well. One possibility to stop the escorts from refuling would be setting their homeport to a base close by where you are going to move to.

Cuttlefish moved KB SW towards Timor but my carriers and Force Z are far away from this position and CF doesn't know where as my TF haven't been spotted since they left the scene around Balikpapan... my units will go back to Australia for R&R and the carriers will wait for the reinforcements arriving in Australia... my two USN CV have done a great job in the last couple of weeks since the outbreak of hostilities and they sure deserve a rest... not only were we causing damage and the enemy lost quite some valuable ships, I also expect CF to operate in a little safer way so this may slow him down a bit...

after hitting two Dutch mines at Balikpapan Kongo is later hit by one out of four torps and may be in serious trouble now, a second hit would have done her in for sure... she is listed as sunk but I guess she hasn't gone down yet, but the chances for her to make it are really small, especially when I think about all the subs I got in the Makassar Strait... really nice

seems like Kongo was so heavily damaged after hitting those two mines that she was split off her task force and was sent out with only Atago as escort so she was rather easy prey... I really don't like it if this happens to me when my ships get split off their task forces with only one escort, I would prefer I could deactivate that feature as I am the one who wants to decide how many escorts my damaged capital ships get... you can do that the next turn but during the turn it happens you end up with only one escort for a capital ship like Kongo and in this case it was a DC carrying heavy cruiser that would be a juicy target itself for my subs...

Manila is urban light which gives you a worse bonus than Clark Field which is jungle rough. Jungle rough is the second best terrain bonus, only urban heavy and mountains being better IIRC. You will see later on that we get insanely high adjusted av there and the enemy really suffers from attacking. Not a single ton of supplies was left behind at Manila as it was an organized retreat.

our sub attacks vs the invasion convoy were quite succesful, seems like the enemy Inf Rgt lost at least halve of it's strenght but the nav bombardments seem to have been enough to wreck our adjusted av so Balikpapan will be lost... amazing to me that Cuttlefish doesn't send any support with his combat troops, even though Balikpapan isn't that a tough target...

today's airlosses show a clear victory for us in terms of total aircraft lost but when looking at fighter vs fighter losses we did not do too well... ok, we faced the best the Japanese can field and those Zeroes that were shot down over Darwin mean the pilots are lost but I still thought we could do slightly better vs the Zeroes on escort with 100 figthers at the base...

the Val losses together with the succesful attack on CA Maya make this day a real success, though I doubt that there were really 61 Vals shot down, around 40 is probably the real number being shot down...

we aren't even one month into the war so my pilots are still not anywhere near where I want to have them, my pilot training programme is running full speed but it will probably take us into mid March/early April to see the first squadrons having 70 air / 70 def skill pilots... those will be real bad news for the Japanese if my fighters will be fighting over friendly terrain with radar support...

IIRC the total air losses have always been in our favour so far and we will try to do our best to never has this change...

damn it... Marblehead has been at Balikpapan since she has been hit by two torps and now tried to get back to Soerabaja... she meets an enemy destroyer that has been sitting there alone for several turns (nav search spotted it but I thought it would be a false spotting as it didn't make any sense to me to place a lone destroyer there on patrol do not retire)... Marblehead enters the hex, nav engagement triggers and while I was yesterday 100% sure that she would make Soerabaja the engagement with Natsushio means she is no a burning wreck... none of the shells were able to penetrate but Marblehead suffered enough additional sys damage and fires were raging so I had to scuttle her... pity, this is my second CL lost in the war...

seems like most of KB's carriers have launched their fighters to perform sweeps and it gets worse for us with every sweep coming in... total losses today were a victory for the IJN, not sure it is worth it but I would have really liked to avoid these losses as my fighters are in short supply (not that I wouldn't have a sufficient pool but losing them that way is not what I preferre)

it will soon be time to abandon Rangoon which shouldn't be much of a problem as our Chinese supply stocks are filling up constantly with all the supply we have dumped into Rangoon... India and Ceylon are running low on supplies though and a good part of the supplies brought to Rangoon flow back to India, tracker clearly shows this with supply stocks highly varying every couple of turns in Burma, India and China... You are mixing two separate things. Supply will move into or out of China "normally", meaning just like anywhere else.

"The Burma Road" is a special condition. When the Burma road is open, a stipend of 500 supply per day appears in China. IIRC the 500 supply appears at Chungking, but where it appears might have changed (I don't recall).

I should have added that 200,000 supply probably will take a while to move into China, especially through bases that have supply caps (a daily supply cap means that it the most that base can receive in one day). Remember that for some bases the supply cap is all the time. For other bases the supply cap only applies during the monsoon season (there is a check box in the editor, typically used for those bases in/near Burma that experience the monsoon).

I have said it many times in the past years but usually have been mowed down and always smiled when for example AndyMac said he suffers from those supply caps as I have never experienced them. I can show as many screenshots as wished that clearly show how supply easily flows from Burma to China. I guess if I dump 200,000 supplies in Rangoon, 150,000 end up in China, the rest flowed back to India. Perhaps it was less but it sure came from Burma.

The game is weeks ahead the AAR, when I gave up Rangoon, I had 220,000 supplies stored in China which is 160,000 more than what I started with. Guess it took me something like 6-8 weeks to do so, but it doesn't take that long to see the supply going from Burma to China, what takes longer is bringing the supply from India to Burma with loading and unloading.
