Need a play tester for the Hakko version I will take either side no issues either way and we play it out to look for bugs

p.s. not the version above I have a small mod still tomake to Japanese pilots

So if anyone is interested in test driving Hakko with me pick your side

Recommend moving an RAAF or Dutch fighter SQD to 731 Miri to protect the base which gets hammered on Day 1 by the AI. The base has a lvl 2 AF and enough AvnSpt on Day 1 to support operations. The Dutch forces need to be upgraded from the planes they start with before game start.

Base 1168 Samarinda has air units present at Start but no Base Force to support them. Recommend adding/or moving a RAAF Base Force.

NOTE: If the FM-2 has no upgrade path and is out of service either a large replacement pool is needed or construction needs to be extended.
Recommend all TBF-1’s be upgraded at start, plane has been out of service for 2 years.
Recommend most TBM-1’s be upgraded, plane has been out of service for 1 year.
Fill out the PB2Y-5 Coronado sqd’s and give them a small replacement pool since the lane is out of production.

The US should have 4-6 months of production for all active devices available at start to use as replacements. If not should start to recieve monthly Convoys of replacements arriving from the US/ETO. Based on the fact all replacements of men and equipment now are headed to the PTO.

The rest of the allies should have 2-3 months worth of production for all active devices available at start to use as replacements.

Common equipmentwould be 6-9 months.

Hi, Andy,
Can I ask that the allied commander be put in - Nimitz, McCarthur, Halsey, Spruance should be in place. Retire Kimmel and Ghormley

The Allies don't get enough mines for operation Starvation. I doubt that 4-6 months production would be enough. Now, the mines would probably make the blockade runner mini game much less intresting. I forget the start date for Starvation, but maybe there should already be mine fields in all the major ports.

Adding more Jap AA would make the game more intresting, but IRL Jap night defenses where rather hopless. The USAAF did pretty well did take entire cities out of the war in one or two nights. Nowever, they didn't get to attack night after night they way you can in AE. Maybe the fatage value for long range missions should get dialed up instead.

I didn't check Japanese assets in Downfall, but IRL they had somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 aircraft stashed away for kamakazi attacks on the invasion. I didn't get that kind of attack when I invaded. Then again, I pounded the place for nearly a year before invading.

I haven't checked the numbers, but the one time I tried Downfall I strayed a little too close with a carrier task force a few days on from the start of the scenario and was swamped by wave upon wave of kamikazes. I don't know if there are 10,000 of them, but it sure felt that way ;)

With PDU on I am not to bothered by upgrade paths - PDU is designed to be on in this game

I will look at list more from view of allied Ai

I seem to remember quadrupling mine production for both side and adding a lot to pools but will check again tonight

I haven't checked the numbers, but the one time I tried Downfall I strayed a little too close with a carrier task force a few days on from the start of the scenario and was swamped by wave upon wave of kamikazes. I don't know if there are 10,000 of them, but it sure felt that way ;)

I had the same experience, but the 5 to 10 thousand were a special invasion reserve. The sources I've read "discuss" whether all of them would be used against the first invasion. There would have been problems, the aircraft were hidden so far from the airfields (up to 20 miles) that it was going to be real hard to stage the really massive attacks that might crack the US defenses. The attacks were intended to go in at twilight, against the APA's, APD's etc. using terrain masking. This was viewed as the second most powerful weapon they had left. They were also making midget subs that ranged from so-so to downright pathetic, suicide boats, swimmers, etc. The final, most powerful weapon, was to be all 100 million Japanese civilians attacking with really sharp bamboo spears. The generals making these plans seem to have forgotten that 100 million was just poetic license, there were never more than about 80 million. At the time we expected to invade, starvation would have been getting pretty bad. MacArthur had to ask for an emergency food shipment shortly after the surrender, or 30 million would have starved. Also note that starving women, children and old men are probably not going to use their spears very well. They certainly didn’t on Okinawa. There seem to have been a few civilian militia attacks, but they pretty well got lost in the noise.

I am discussing a PBEM with another chap. Is this mod available for a PBEM? I like the fact that you have incorporated JWE's et al efforts.
Cheers

Thanks for your response. However, the opponent backed out of this game. I will wait until you are finished testing and then try to find another foe.

Been doing a lot of research on DOWNFALL the last year or so; and here's some data I've managed to ferret out on USMC/USN aircraft conversions -- the sources were:

Location of USN Aircraft, 4 August 1945
Naval Aeronautic Organization, 23 July 1945

Basically:

VMSB/VMTB Conversions:

All existing VMSB/VMTB squadrons were to be redesignated as VMBF squadrons after re-equipping with F7F or F4Us, at the following rates: 4 to F4Us by March 1946, 2 to F7F by June 1946, 5 to F7F by September 1946.

By December 1946, six squadrons would have converted to F7Fs and six to F4Us, for a total of 12 conversions.

Marine Fighter units would have converted to the Tigercat as follows:

Day Fighter: Several land-based squadrons in addition to VMF-312 would be converting from the F4U to the F7F Tigercat – at the following rate: 1 by March 1946, 3 by June 1946 and 5 by September 1946.

Night Fighter: Several land-based squadrons in addition to VMF(N) 533 and 544 would be converting from the F6F-5N to the F7F at the following rate: 1 by December 1945, 2 by March 1945 and 4 by June 1946, until all USMC Night Fighter units were operating the Tigercat.

USN Seaplanes:

According to "Naval Aeronautic Organization, 23 July 1945":

Page 24:
"For planning purposes BBU now using OS2U as substitutes for SC are assumed to be re-equipped with SC by Oct 1945."

Page 25:
"For planning purposes CAU now using OS2U or SOC as substitute for SC are assumed to be re-equipped with SC by Oct 1945."

Page 26
"For planning purposes CLU now using OS2U or SOC as substitute for SC are assumed to be re-equipped with SC by Oct 1945."

BBU = Battleship Units
CAU = Heavy Cruiser units
CLU = Light Cruiser units.

So basically, every scouting floatplane in the USN was going to become the SC Seahawk by OLYMPIC.

Here are my assumptions as for ship arrivals for DOWNFALL -- it's a bit incomplete.

Assumptions Made for Timing

Norfolk through Panama Canal to San Diego, onwards to Hawaii, and then to Buckner Bay is 11,200~ nautical miles. At a average cruising speed of 15 knots, this will take 32~ days to complete.

Hawaii to Buckner Bay is about 4,100~ nautical miles. At an average cruising speed of 15 knots, this will take 12~ days to complete.

Atlantic Fleet Cruiser Training seems to have been six weeks according to the CINCLANT War Diary.

--------------

Carriers

CV-13 Franklin (New York NYd)

Notes: CINCLANT war diary gives Return to Sea date as 1 January 1946. Assuming 8 weeks of training, plus transit time, CV-13 Franklin would have arrived at Buckner Bay around 30 March 1946.

CV-39 Lake Champlain (Off of Cuba)

Notes: CINCLANT war diary has her departing on 4 August for Norfolk NYd. Assuming a three week availability period and travel time, she would become available at Buckner Bay around 2 October 1945, in time to execute her programmed role in TF58 during the OLYMPIC operation.

Battleships:

BB-34 New York (New York) (Pearl Harbor NYd)
VO-5 Detachment (3 x OS2U-3)

Notes: At Pearl Harbor, having her main guns relined after wearing them out during the Iwo Jima bombardments.

BB-38 Pennsylvania (Pennsylvania)
VO-2 Detachment (2 x SC-1)

Notes: Torpedoed on 12 August 1945 by a Japanese aircraft in Buckner Bay. Lost #3 shaft during cruise back home. Arrived at Puget Sound NY on 24 October 1945.

Based on the turn-around time for BB-46 Maryland after being torpedoed on 18 June 1944, and BB-55 North Carolina after being torpedoed on 15 September 1942, repairs would have taken a month in dry-dock; with possibly extra time to replace the lost #3 propeller shaft.

Assuming 1.5 months to repair, and then a further two weeks for post-repair shakedown training, BB-38 would have been ready for re-assignment to the fleet around 22 December 1945.

Furthermore, based on the travel time of BB-38 Pennsylvania when she was transiting to Alaskan waters in the Spring of 1943 (1,900 n.mi in 7 days), if her route to the combat zone had taken her from Puget Sound, Washington to Buckner Bay, Okinawa via Hawaii (6,300~ n.mi), she would have arrived in the combat zone around 16 January 1946.

BB-46 Maryland (Colorado) (Puget Sound NYd)
VO-4 Detachment (2 x SC-1)

Notes: Undergoing battle damage repair and general overhaul until 19 August 1945, at which point, she would execute post-overhaul training until 31 August 1945. She would have arrived at Buckner Bay around 25 September 1945 if transiting via Hawaii.

BB-56 Washington (North Carolina) (Puget Sound NYd)
VO-6 Detachment (2 x OS2U-3)

Notes: Overhaul/Modernization from 28 June to October 1945. Would have arrived at Buckner Bay sometime in late October 1945 or early November 1945 if traveling to Okinawa via Hawaii.

Heavy Cruisers

CB-3 Hawaii (Alaska) (NY Shipbuilding)

Notes: Launched on 13 November 1945. Based on average build times from CB-1/CB-2, she would commission around 17 September 1946. Assuming an eight week training period, and transit time to the Pacific, she would arrive at Buckner Bay around 14 December 1946.

CA-28 Louisville (Northampton) (Pearl Harbor)
Detachment (3 x SC-1)

Notes: Being repaired in Pearl Harbor following Kamikaze strike on 5 June 1945. Likely would have been available in the winter of 1945 in the combat zone.

CA-68 Baltimore (Baltimore) (Pearl Harbor)
Detachment (2 x OS2U-3)

Notes: Arrived at Pearl Harbor on 12 July 1945, and remained in Hawaiian waters for Navy Yard availability/training through August 1945. If she had been directed to re-enter the combat zone, she would have arrived at Buckner Bay around early September 1945.

CA-70 Canberra (Baltimore) (Boston NYd)
Detachment (4 x SC-1)

Notes: Being repaired following aerial torpedoing on 13 October 1944. CINCLANT War diary gives her as ready for sea around 26 September 1945. Historically, she was in the yard until 17 October 1945. Based off the standard six week training time and transit time, CA-70 Canberra would have arrived at Buckner Bay around 9 December 1945.

CA-72 Pittsburgh (Baltimore) (Puget Sound NYd)

Notes: Being repaired after losing her bow on 4 June 1945 in a typhoon. Arrived at Puget Sound NY on 16 July 1945. Allowing for three months of repair, plus three weeks of shakedown, Pittsburgh would have arrived at Okinawa around late November / early December 1945.

CA-74 Columbus (Baltimore) (Boston NYd)
Detachment (4 x SC-1)

Notes: CINCLANT war diary gives her as ready for sea on 29 August 1945. Assuming a six week training period and transit time, she would have been available at Buckner Bay around 11 November 1945. 1/3d of Cruiser Division 21 (CRUDIV 21), which was programmed for the PTO.

CA-130 Bremerton (Baltimore) (Casco Bay, Maine) (CHECKED)
Detachment (2 x SC-1)

Notes: Carried out experimental work at Casco Bay until 2 October 1945; arrived at Pearl Harbor on 15 December 1945 for duty with the 7th Fleet. Assuming transit time, she would have arrived at Buckner Bay around 30 December 1945. Half of Cruiser Division 19 (CRUDIV 19).

CA-131 Fall River (Baltimore) (Philadelphia NYd)
Detachment (4 x SC-1)

Notes: Under construction at Philadelphia NYd. CINCLANT war diary gives her as Ready For Sea around 13 August. Assuming a six week training period and transit time; she would arrive at Buckner Bay around 9 November 1945. However, since she was half of Cruiser Division 19 (CRUDIV 19), it is likely her departure would have been delayed so that CRUDIV 19 could arrive for service together around 30 December 1945.

CA-132 Macon (Baltimore) (Camden NJ)
Detachment (4 x SC-1)

Notes: She commissioned into the fleet on 26 August 1945. Assuming a ten week interval for training and shakedown along with transit time, she would have arrived at Buckner Bay around 6 December 1945. 1/3d of Cruiser Division 21 (CRUDIV 21), which was programmed for the PTO.

CA-135 Los Angeles (Baltimore) (Philadelphia NYd)
Detachment (4 x SC-1)

Notes: CINCLANT war diary gives her as ready for sea on 27 August 1945. Assuming a six week training period along with transit time, she would have arrived at Buckner Bay around 9 November 1945. 1/3d of Cruiser Division 21 (CRUDIV 21), which was programmed for the PTO.

LIGHT CRUISERS

CL-46 Phoenix (Brooklyn) (Enroute to Pearl Harbor)
Detachment (2 x OS2U-3)

Notes: Enroute to Pearl Harbor to enter a planned Overhaul/Refit period when Japan capitulated.

CL-47 Boise (Brooklyn) (San Pedro, CA)

Notes: Arrived in San Pedro, CA for a Overhaul/Refit on 7 July 1945. Was in the San Pedro area until 3 October 1945. If she had been ordered to the PTO, she would have arrived in very late October or early November 1945.

CL-48 Honolulu (Brooklyn) (Norfolk NYd)
Detachment (3 x SC-1)

Notes: Torpedoed on 20 October 1944. She arrived at Norfolk NYd on 20 December 1944. CINCLANT war diary gives her as ready for sea by 2 October; and in real life, repairs were complete by October 1945. Based off six weeks of training standard for cruisers, and travel time to the PTO, CL-48 Honolulu would have arrived at Buckner Bay around 15 December 1945.

CL-64 Vincennes (Cleveland) (Mare Island NYd)

Notes: Undergoing overhaul/refit at Mare Island NYd, having arrived there on 8 July 1945. Her post-overhaul shakedown trials began on 29 August 1945. With three weeks of trials and then transit time to Buckner Bay figured in, she would arrive at Okinawa around early October 1945.

CL-81 Houston (Cleveland) (New York NYd)
Detachment (3 x SC-1)

Notes: Torpedoed on 14 October 1944. Due to a lack of shipyard space on the West Coast, she was assigned to be repaired at New York NYd, arriving there on 24 March 1945. The CINCLANT war diary gives her as ready for sea on 30 September 1945. In real life, this occurred on 11 October 1945. Assuming a six week training period and transit time back to the PTO, CL-81 Houston would arrive at Buckner Bay around 13 December 1945.

CL-82 Providence (Cleveland) (Boston NYd)
Detachment (3 x SC-1)

Notes: Under construction. CINCLANT war diary gives her ready for sea date as around 12 August 1945, with orders to report to TF69. Half of Cruiser Division 20 (CRUDIV 20). Programmed for the PTO, so after an extended ten week period of training and transit time, she would have arrived at Buckner Bay around 25 November 1945.

CL-89 Miami (Cleveland) (San Francisco NYd)
Detachment (3 x SC-1)

Notes: Being overhauled/refitted at San Francisco when the war ended. After the end of the war, she arrived at Pearl Harbor on 25 August 1945 – which means she would have arrived at Buckner Bay around early to mid September 1945.

CL-92 Little Rock (Cleveland) (Shakedown cruise off Cuba)
Detachment (3 x SC-1)

Notes: CINCLANT war diary gives her as having orders to depart on 27 August 1945 for Philadelphia NYd. She was programmed for the PTO as half of Cruiser Division 20 (CRUDIV 20), so it is likely she would have been “held up” so that she could depart in company with CL-82 Providence so they could arrive at Buckner Bay together around 25 November 1945.

CL-96 Reno (Oakland) (Charleston NYd)

Notes: Torpedoed on 3 November 1944 by I-41. Arrived at Charleston NYd on 22 March 1945 for repairs. CINCLANT war diary gives her return to sea as 11 October 1945. Assuming six weeks of training and then transit time, she would have arrived at Buckner Bay around 7 January 1946.

CL-102 Portsmouth (Cleveland) (Shakedown cruise off Cuba)
Detachment (3 x SC-1)

Notes: CINCLANT War Diary gives her as training off Cuba with orders to depart on 5 September for Norfolk NYd. Assuming three weeks of post-training availability, and travel time, she would arrive at Buckner Bay around 2 November 1945. Half of Cruiser Division 22 (CRUDIV 22), which was programmed for the PTO.

CL-106 Fargo (Fargo) (Camden, NJ)
Detachment (3 x SC-1)

Notes: Under construction at NYSB. Commissioned on 9 December 1945. Assuming seven weeks of training and availability, along with travel times, she would arrive at Buckner Bay around 28 February 1946. Half of Cruiser Division 22 (CRUDIV 22), which was programmed for the PTO.
