Status: offline 		Yeah, 1200 pilots for 11 months, just over 100/month or 3/day. VERY low compared to my games. Your trained pilot pool should be very good att this time.

The IJAAF pool is great. 100s of ready pilots in all categories.

For the IJNAF I still struggle to get enough fighter pilots. The DB and TB guys are 20-30 deep at high levels of skill with more at medium or specialty levels, and all other categories are much deeper. With fighters, I scrape the bottom continually.

I'd be very interested to know other player's numbers. Maybe I'm playing to conservatively and I should step it up a notch!?!

Good point. I still have the Tainan and the 3rd Ku-S-1 groups in Burma. I could pull those guys at least to the rear for Tojo groups and keep the Oscars around for range. That would keep losses down and give a chance to push more trainees through. I'll move one to the Andamans to support the Bettys there, as it's about time he could try something sneaky in the area.

I'll keep two big Oscar groups, maybe three, for escorts and LR duties. The IIb just came online which is good. (What am I going to do with all of those Ics)?

I'll switch out the others for Tojos, move one Zero unit to the Andamans, keep one in Rangoon for defense and LR CAP of naval ships, and keep the Nicks at Moulmein for bomber killers outside Allied sweep range. I think I have one more 27 plane zero group there too, and I'll move them back to Sabang or Medan, which will again save pilots and shore up the defense.

Yep, exactly what I have worked out. Prolly not optimal and hopefully someone else will suggest improvements.

I need to catch up in this game. The turns are going quickly, but not the AAR!

subs: Sunfish, Spearfish, Gunard and Snapper all attack and dud today.

So Pac: The invasion of Anatom is preparing to get under way. This will likely be the final major invasion by the Japanese unless there are quick counter-invasions later in the game.

A division and a brigade will lead the way with an SNLF along for the ride and to remain as garrison. The KB, the Yamato TF and multiple other surface forces will take part. First support ships are being sent closer to the target area. Ndeni will be a temporary replenishment harbor, but the ships will not disband there as it is within range of Suva, just barely.

A6M3a will be eventually stationed in Koumac to provide LR CAP in case weather keeps the KB fro flying near the invasion TF.

All of the pieces are in place, now to send them off to begin their missions.

Burma: The rear base at Moulmein, where Id just stashed two groups of Helens, was pummeled today. The Nicks there did not fly CAP, and I lost about 45 planes. At least the pilots are okay.

Lightnings also took out about 8 Oscars for 1 loss at Schwebo. That group will be pulled back for rest.

subs: A healthy contingent f subs is patrolling around Perth, and this has produced the few kills our under-ocean fleet has gotten recently. Not sure why I-122 elected not to launch at the AG later in the day. I'll have to check that commander.

Status: offline 		AG Deneb is a very small, 700 ton ship. Not really worth a torpedo. It has a cargo capacity of 585, so it can't rearm much.

Burma: I threw everything I had at Akyab today, thinking that the moral of the groups there might be very low. Surprisingly they did well, and although for the day it looked like we came out just slightly ahead, this was no massacre. The Allies are getting steadily better in the air.

subs: I-153 takes a bit of punishment for I-122's actions off Albany. Only one light near miss.

HI: The CVs are taking turns getting refits. Today the Hiryu got started. Her planes are back in the Solomons hunting subs and flying CAP. Finally some of these old DD gets upgrades as well.

Shoho is also progressing nicely and should be back in shape in about 10 days.

An unexpected strike leads to massive destruction.

Burma: I am usually careful about disbanding ships in port within range of bombing, especially in known 4E territory. Today a bit of carelessness was revealed in a well timed strike by Jocke.

I had just brought more support ships to the Andamans to be distributed around the bases. They were temporarily disbanded in Port Blair. now they are preparing for eventual use as new offshore reef habitats to be visited with enthusiasm by generations of divers.

This is a setback, but these are easily replaceable ships. It's good nothing of higher value was here. The AS is a bit tough to lose, but several others are converting and I can bring a spare from Saigon over here, this time a bit farther from india.

My large zero group with very high quality pilots did nothing absolutely nothing against these beasts.

subs: Barb, Sargo and Silversides all fail to hit targets. Silversides finds the Shiranui tanker TF, and I was sweating that one! It was a dud hit on the ship!

So Pac: Shuffling things around. I can't seem to allocate enough fuel to the area. I've finally decided to just send in a massive set of shipments to top up Tulagi and Rabaul to the limit. No sense having a bunch of subs sitting here that can't refuel.

JPC: Finally getting some supply to flow to the mountains. I have to overload Hong Kong to get it to move up there. And then its only slowly building.

Burma: A small group of British Liberators flew against Pegu. Oscars diverted there and damaged a bunch, but no outright kills. Not sure if these were just left on or this was intentional.

Very quiet today.

subs: Tarpon is sighted by escorts before firing.

So Pac: I keep getting some blips moving in deep South Pacific on sigint.

JPC: Getting some already purchased garrison units out as Chinese regiments and Brigades move back into them. These are heading to the Gilberts, Marshalls, and to the Andamans. I'm also sending tank regiments out to some key islands. It's a way to get good amounts of defensive pop while keeping under stacking limits. Or at least that's the plan.

Burma: Nothing.

A bit of action in Burma today.

subs: Just a few sightings.

So Pac: An interesting report. Usually when these come in well after the battle they seem to be actually correct. Still can't be sure, but this corroborates what Jocke insinuated after the battle. So at least we took down a CA as well as losing one.

CA Pensacola is reported to have been sunk near Kabara on Oct 26, 1942

All LB zero units have upgraded to A6M3a. now for the KB. It will take a while I'm sure.

Burma: A raid came into Katha today. There are only 12 Tojo and some AA there. Oscars were vectored in a and really helped out though, giving even loss numbers for the day. I thikn we can absorb these losses better for another 6 months or so, so more of these small attacks are great, especially over our territory. Only 3 pilots KIA.

Another day of raids in Burma.

subs: Only a few attacks by ASW air in the Solomons. That's all.

So Pac: Ships are traveling to pick up the 16th division and land it at Anatom. I hope I've got the right composition to get it off the ships quickly. This is kind of a test to see how my mid-game post-bonus invasions might look. Several SCTFs are heading down to cover and the KB is moving out to hit the N OZ coast if possible. Very few fighters are showing up in reckons there, so I thought it could be a good diversion, see if this might keep him busy there while I'm preparing for the Anatom operation.

Burma: Another strike came today. Again at Katha. This is not a big air center for me, but I am trying to build forts here. They are about at 4 now. There is a good amount of AA here, though, because strikes have hit so often. It doesn't seem to be having much effect though. Oscars fought bravely, and did fly under the Lightnings to get to the bombers a bit.

Oscars. Is it okay to actually like them?

subs: Near Manila today the Peto put one fish into xAK Ehime Maru. I always have a flash of extra recognition when its one of the class namesake ships. This one has surprisingly little damage and will make it back to Manila barring further action.

So Pac: The KB moves toward the OZ coast. Only 30 fighters are reported in Townsville where several CLs and other ships are reported in the port. It could be folly at this stage, but I'll try one last raid here and then go support the landings.

I'll post a pic of the Anatom area soon, once the transports get moving. The staging base is Koumac. Less reconned than Noumea.

Burma: Continuing in the Burma centric action lately, 4E strikes went for Kunming today, which I'd set up and have been using as a recon and bomber base. Oscars met the strike, set at 10k and 0 hex at 50% CAP. They did VERY well against the monsters, hitting all three types and actually shooting down more than they lost!

Jocke emailed and asked what I'd been feeding those guys! I replied, 'Chinese pilots.'

His losses are quite a bit higher than it appears here, based on my reports and his message. Mine are only 2 Oscars lost and 1 pilot KIA.

So Pac: Well, I think I answered my own question today. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting fairly good at this game. Then I realize how much I have to learn on a turn like today.

Jocke threw every fighter in range into Townsville. I swept and found about 130 planes there, not 30!!! Ouch. Then my limited raid went in and got absolutely plastered. For the day 41 Kates lost!! Ouch, ouch, ouch! Okay. Lesson learned. Seriously.

At least the Zeros held their own, and even took out a higher number of the defenders, especially in ops losses after the battle. The spits are not fun to see here. Without them this might have not been such a bad day, but wow, they were tough.

Luckily all of my KB groups were stacked to the max and the Hiryu groups are also down here at Buna, one of which will be replacing one Kate group.

A-Day minus 1. No other combat today.

subs: Subs are being reported hit all over the area, and their DL is very high as the KB moves in to range.

So Pac: Tomorrow the landing should go forward. The KB is moving into pace a few hexes north of the island. A full 5 SCTF plus th eYamato bombardment group are in the area as well as four dedicated ASW TFs following the invasion groups and the KB. Today a minesweeping TF hit the island and I was surprised not to find any there.

subs: There are about 5-7 subs in the island hex! Most were contacted today, and some hit hard. no sub hits and only one got off a shot at an ASW TF.

So Pac: The troops land! All is going to plan so far, with surprisingly light losses to the troops and the ships in the amphib TFs. Almost all of the troops made it ashore in one day! Still some support left to unload, but it's looking good so far.

No transports have more than 5 system damage or 2 fires from the guns. I'm sure that will change one the BBs have less heavy gunfire to answer back with.

The bombardment did very little in spite of a spotter listed, disabling only about 15 squads, but every little bit helps.

Tomorrow I'll DA since so little AV is left for the Allies and our troops are in such good shape.

The KB will change spot about 3 hexes to throw him off the scent with the subs.

I moved the Yamashiro TF within 6 hexes of Nadi with a heavy LR CAP on the TF to test the waters there and get in possible range for a bombardment of that base. I think I should've kept it back, in hindsight, but I got lucky today. None of the SBD strikes were escorted and they were slaughtered. At least 35 downed on the day.

The Yamashiro takes two 1000 pounders and shakes them off easily. Only 9 system and 4 flood damage. Still this is a good enough warning that all ships will depart tomorrow to the North with the KB covering set about 4 hexes North of it's current position. No need to ruin a good clean operation with a careless move.

This was my first experience of a CV clash in an AE PBEM. Like most first time experiences the climax did not turn out exactly as planned. Still, it was exciting and hard fought on both sides. I know who came out ahead in this one, but I'm not sure Jocke does yet. Please don't spill the beans!

So Pac: In spite of our retreat the Allies charged in unseen and got in range for strikes with the full array of US CVs! I had though this could happen, and had moved Emilys into La Foa and Koumac, as well as Funafuti to give extra search on the back doors. A string of Glen subs were South of Fiji for the same reason.

In spite of these precautions, the massive CV TFs were not seen on sigint or through search. His CVs were in three TFs, two in one hex and one in another. Unofrtunately for me, there were severe storms over all of his carriers and only moderate rains over mine. I'm not sure if this is why so few of my planes flew, or if it was something else. Moral was good, Fresh groups had flown on to replace the beat up ones from a few days ago, and we had first shot. A few zeros are set to partial LR CAP 'commander discretion,' and 17 from 4 separate CVs did meet 4Es over Anatom, but this shouldn't have meant much .

The real killer was that the commander of one group, Tamon Yamaguchi, apparently reacted toward the US CVs with one TF while the other stayed behind two hexes away. This effectively split the CAP and probably hurt coordination. The biggest US strike went after the smaller of the two TFs, which was farther away, and was devastating.

It wasn't a complete lost day, as several US CVs are hit hard. Wasp goes down for sure, and the Big E looks to follow. Yorktown had an ammo explosion and showed 'heavy fires, heavy damage' but I bet will make it if I can't get a sub in her way.

On our side, Soryu is gone already. Shokaku is lost with heavy damage and massive fires. Zuikaku has a chance, but with 57 37 18 and 80 fires, its doubtful. Hosho will also go down tomorrow no doubt.

At the end of it all, Anatom was captured. Talk about anti-climactic!

The one extremely positive thing about that was many US planes diverted there to land. About 70 were lost with their pilots when the base changed hands. Roughly 260 Allied planes were lost on the day!!! That compared to 142 for the IJN. About 172 SBD lost alone! That should cut down strike ability for a few months at least.

Status: offline 		A 1:1 loss in CVs is a no win for Japan. If he can get either Yorktown or Enterprise back to Suva and is able to salvage her, then you will have even a great loss than you have now. But, not till '44.
