we spotted the enemy coming in for the invasion of Eastern Timor and moved two USMC dive bomber squadrons to Darwin if an enemy SAG dared to come closer South and indeed, an enemy light cruiser squadron was parked in range of the Vindicators (second squadron is equipped with SBD-2 with only 7 hexes range)... have been amazed to see three hits scored on Naka in thunderstorms but those 500lb bombs do nearly no damage at all in Babes...

I am still thinking that bombs should do MORE damage than stock for an at least halved hit percentage... this attack is a good example, imagine an IJN light cruiser taking three 500lb SAP bombs going through the deck... in real life, the ship would have had to be really lucky to even survive, in this case, the ship isn't even put on fire and just moves on...

all our Dutch bombers are set to naval attack but they just refused to fly all the time... today a whopping six bombers attack a convoy and score two hits... I really just shake my head about bombers' inability to even launch nav strikes despite having perfect conditions, nav strikes in AE just rarely fly at all, no matter if real life commanders would have throwin in kitchen sink, in AE, your bombers just sit on the airfield doing nothing or playing cards with the air HQ's staff...

several enemy SAGs and KB are spotted, expected target is Port Moresby... once more I wonder about KB being used as cover of those SAGs because where KB is currently, we could have striked at those SAGs... those small oversights could lead into quite a disaster but in this case, we had nothing nearby as the enemy showed up catching us by surprise...

enemy moves in and a DD hits a mine... amazingly there were no bombardments during the whole turn, with two enemy TF being spotted West of PM, two sitting in the PM hex and KB sitting a couple of hundred miles South of Milne Bay covering the Southern approach... rather strange position for those two TF (probably bombardment) sitting two hexes West of PM...

Mikazuki has either hit a Mk-6 or Mk-10 mine, only US mines at Port Moresby and those should be quite lethal...

after yesterday's attack on this convoy I didn't expect another nav strike showing up but several sweeps... I was (luckily) wrong and there were no sweeps but an escorted Nell strike against the convoy with the Zeroes on escort being heavily reinforced by two Oscar units... we had only halve the pre warning time than yesterday but in total do slightly better while still not really satisfying when it comes down to total enemy ac shot down... the Oscars didn't achieve anything else than being targets and in the end we only lose 2 of our fighters over Akyab (both to Zeroes)... all Nells missed in light rain after some of them have been shot down before they could get to the ships...

situation around Port Moresby... as you can see we tried to flood the area with subs and there are more to come as PM will obviously be the area where it will heat up... no luck so far with our subs, not attacking KB, not attacking the bombardment TFs, not hitting the damaged destroyers heading back to Rabaul...

this attack wasn't unexpected but the hit rate really was... thunderstorms but still a really bad result... guess Cuttlefish is going to try to keep the base damaged, there might be an invasion soo, otherwhise it wouldn't make much sense to me to have halve the IJN in the area... keeping PM surpressed will be a hard task as there are over 200 engineers and something like 50 eng vehicles... 1300 av, mines and lots of CD guns will make this target a more than hard task if Cuttlefish really dares to invade and if he does, he has to bring something like six or seven IJA divs plus support which he hasn't got available...

so now that Singapore has just surrendered and Clark Field not surrendering within a couple of months I think there is not much chance to see a really dedicated attempt to take PM... in the meantime, we are further building up, PM is one of our most important bases we're going to defend...

this invasion was surprising and not really welcome as Cuttlefish is grabbing his first base far South of the Solomons, he might land on New Caledonia soon which is the only are in my line of defense going from Sydney through the Pacific to Hawaii that isn't garissoned yet... I have several units tasked to go there but New Caledonia was on the bottom of my priority list as it is also one of the more difficult to defend areas as the enemy wouldn't have to land directly at Noumea so we need a real garisson to defend the place or we won't defend it at all... we should have 550-600 av there within the next 10-14 days though... everything else in my line of defense in the Pacific has received reinforcements and forts are already between 4 and 6 so everything has gone as planned... the slow Japanese advance across the map makes me think that Cuttlefish won't try to grab anything else than the historic targets anyway and if he does, he will probably pay a high price for it...

Eastern Timor in enemy hands I am sure he will invade Koepang soon too... 200+ Dutch av there behind a couple of forts so it should not be an easy enough target for a couple of IJ Marine units but on the other hand not enough to withstand against a dedicated attack by an IJA div as the Dutch just lack heavy weapons... the defending units there have been flown to Koepang from various bases in the area that have been evacuated... these Sallies seem to do very well...

finally the invasion of Palembang starts... seems like Cuttlefish really waited until he took Singapore to start this operation while he could have taken the place months ago as Singapore was no threat at all to his shipping... I always wonder why IJ players seem to be afraid of Singapore's airfield when it really isn't IMO... an Allied player trying to defend the airfield will lose his aircraft at a 4:1 or higher rate and he will run out of aircraft in no time... an Allied player who doesn't defend the airfield will have it heavily damaged 24/7 if the IJ player keeps a good number of bombers on airfield attack from an airfield close by which is must anyway IMO... so I really don't see much of a threat to land at Palembang early on, if there is KB around to cover the invasion the threat of air attacks is minimal and so is the threat of enemy SAGs trying to engage as this would be close to suizide with the odds being clearly on the IJ side...

but hey, who am I to complain about losing Palembang nearly four months after the outbreak of the war... the biggest threat for the IJ within the SRA are my subs at the moment but their happy times seem to be over already...

quite a force to take an empty base... that arty unit should be used elsewhere I guess and at the moment Luganville isn't a threat as the enemy can only base patrol ac or float planes there with the base being a 1 port 0 airfield... Luganville got quite a potential though but it will take time for the Japanese to build it up and when I look at Rabaul and how slowly the enemy is building up that base then I am not concerned...

Port Moresby for example is on the best way to reach level 8 airfield already and if the enemy won't be flying daily air attacks together with heavy naval bombardments to keep my engineers busy then PM will reach level 9 airfield faster than Japanese Rabaul will see a level 6 airfield...

judging the current situation it looks like Port Moresby will absolutely dominate the surrounding bases with the Japanese not having much chance to supply, reinforce or build up the bases around Lae if they don't neutralize or take PM...

the IJN has sent KB South to cover the landing at Luganville and probably for another raid of my shipping lanes but there is (again) nothing in danger of being caught by the enemy carriers... it looks like KB has been at Sea nearly non stop for months now, would be good if the carriers would have to stay in port for R&R soon even though KB has not been a problem for us so far... a small convoy grabbing Noumea in the next days could easily grab New Caledonia though...

another big airstrike against PM in bad weather resulting in light damage only but our flak claimed a couple of bombers over the target... the only way to supress PM would be nav bombardments and building up Lae or another base in close vicinty to use that base for the IJAAF and the IJNAF should be kept back for anti shipping strikes... at least three times the bomb hits would be needed to keep our engineers from repairing damage...

our bombers show up again in the afternoon but this time even more where shot down before getting to the ships... being badly shot up and bad weather then means only a couple of additional bomb hits on the ships... losses for the Dutch bombers were horrible today but we lose them while doing some damage which isn't something you can really expect to get out of the Dutch... I really wonder why Cuttlefish hasn't tried to knock out the Dutch airforce at all so far and even if the price for it won't break his neck I think it could have been easier for him...

ouch, that wasn't good... losing precious patrol aircraft is especially tragedious... I am using three B-17D squadrons purely for long range recon and will also do so with the available LB-30 as soon as B-17D numbers decrease but so far they take no losses on recon... all pilots flying these missions have 70 recon skill and this really works well... we won't have dedicated recon squadrons (that actually got useful aircraft) until late 42 and then their aircraft replacements will be low until late 43 so those heavy bomber recons will see lots of work in the next two years...

I fear the Dutch won't have much chance vs an IJA div that is even reinforced by an IJA rgt... what really strikes me is how Cuttlefish's invasions look like... as earlier, he lands combat troops without any support troops which really seems to be odd IMO... he doesn't seem to really care about support or arty and I guess his units aren't benefitting from this...

bad news on Timor, Koepang's defenders couldn't stand the attacks by an IJA div and rgt and all nice units surrendered today... Timor is now fully controlled by the Japanese but only Koepang is a usable base at the moment... while Timor is lost now, Darwin is being further built up and is already a level 7 airfield and heavily fortified... as we have entered April there is no amphib bonus anymore which means the enemy now has to prepare for major amphib operations which means I don't really expect any head on invasions at places that are heavily defended...

with every day that goes by I am becoming more and more confident as my pilots are trained, my frontline gets stronger and my aircraft pools grow...

there was real bad news today though, intel brought this up:

BB Kongo NOT sunk!

damn it, the battleship took two mines at Balikpapan and was then succesfully attacked by a sub near Borneo and the ship survived???

leaves only BB Ise as the only IJN BB reported sunk but I doubt she is really sunk as she only suffered from two sub attacks...

Kendari was heavily reconned the last turns with B-17D and then we moved in 56 B-17E to attack the Sallies there that were used to bomb Timor... the B-17 achieve a really good result and torch some aircraft on the ground... the downside were two B-17E crashing when they transferred from Townsville to Darwin and one more when flying back from Kendari today... makes it three B-17E lost for not even halve a dozen enemy aircraft destroyed... rather bad trade and not really prove of the always complained indestructability of B-17s...

spotted only one of the BB task forces yesterday but there is another one coming in, no less than five BB operating against Port Moresby... Cuttlefish is once more either overconfident, careless or takes quite some risk because there is no sign of KB being around so these two BB task forces got no air cover at all... Townsville is my main fleet base in the area and I could as well have my carriers stationed here (had them there not long in the past) but due to reaching April I have my carriers in the shipyard for upgrades which I decided to do just a week or so ago and that wasn't a clear decision of mine...

if I would have decided different Cuttlefish's BBs would have ended up in range of 4 USN and 2 RN carriers tomorrow...

back to back attack on Kendari in heavy rain with only a coule of Sallies being damaged, the undamaged ones flew out already... we lost again two B-17E to ops, so in the end those two attacks against an undefended target has cost us 5 B-17E for 5 enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground... heck, thos B-17 really are indestructable... no flak, no fighters, just flying to the target, drop some bombs, fly back and land results in 5 bombers lost out of something like 65 attacking... nerf those Allied 4E pls...

even though we are going to lose this battle for sure, when I look at the enemy division it will really take some time to recover... it's April, the amphib bonus ended, the enemy is stuck at Clark Field and hasn't been landing on Java yet with a good number of his frontline divisions needing time to recover, I really wonder if Cuttlefish will go for any real target the Japanese didn't take real life... if I would have to bet, I would say no...

hmmm... did he have his settings wrong? Surface combat instead of bombardment perhaps? His BB moved in during the night and moved out during the day without firing a single shell at Port Moresby... all they achieve today was sinking two PT boats which is a rather bad outcome for the fuel spent travelling from Truk to PM... not to talk about the risk he takes moving through an area where over a dozen subs are patrolling...

Cuttlefish isn't posting an AAR on your game and I don't want to risk breaching OpSec with a PM to him. If he truly is trying to bombard PM with these BB TF's and they aren't, he may be using waypoints for his TF's. I learned in my AAR game against Smeulders that waypoints interfere with the bombardment routine. I posted to michaelm and he said the ships high speed run-in is affected and they essentially sail to the base and are gone before the bombardment phase actually occurs, hence no bombardment. It's a bug and I think you should ask Cuttlefish is this is indeed the case, so he can adjust the movement of his TF's. I know how frustrated I was. After learning the reason, I adjusted the movement of my TF's without waypoints and future bombardments worked like a charm.
