hmmm... did he have his settings wrong? Surface combat instead of bombardment perhaps? Cuttlefish isn't posting an AAR on your game and I don't want to risk breaching OpSec with a PM to him. If he truly is trying to bombard PM with these BB TF's and they aren't, he may be using waypoints for his TF's. I learned in my AAR game against Smeulders that waypoints interfere with the bombardment routine. I posted to michaelm and he said the ships high speed run-in is affected and they essentially sail to the base and are gone before the bombardment phase actually occurs, hence no bombardment. It's a bug and I think you should ask Cuttlefish is this is indeed the case, so he can adjust the movement of his TF's. I know how frustrated I was. After learning the reason, I adjusted the movement of my TF's without waypoints and future bombardments worked like a charm.

good to know, thx. Something I didn't know either as I usually don't use waypoints for bombardment TFs. Am going to tell CF if I don't forget until I get home from work.

In this PBEM she has at least three holes, if not four, can't remember.

we finally hit a troop transport but I would have preferred to hit Nagato of course... considering the high number of subs with working torps between Rabaul and PM it is a really high risk operation to run BBs around in the area but no luck for us so far...

jungle rough terrain and some forts will make it impossible for the enemy to take Clark Field until we run out of supplies and that should take a while as we have been happily moving single freighters from Hawaii to unload at Bataan and Cuttlefish has not done anything against it because he hasn't noticed so far... my freithers transit Japanese waters unspotted, there is no nav search at all South of Japan... hard to believe first but my freighters really get to Bataan without any problem, have never seen that before because there should be at least some nav search and bombers around the Philipines...

here comes the invasion of Java... once more the invading "army" seems a little strange in it's composition as it's only a single combat unit again... the target is picked well as Semarang is a lvl 5 port (1 af) so without the amphib bonus he will be able to unload there at reasonable speed but without support units he won't be able to have fighter cover at the base which could provide the Dutch airforce some chance to strike at enemy shipping...

Cuttlefish did more or less nothing to wear down the Dutch airforce so far but he has got KB nearby to cover the invasion... I still would have tried to destroy the Dutch bombers before the invasion goes in as this would have been a rather easy task...

we are by far not getting the same results out of our bombers as the Japanese have been doing so far, even though those B-17 are manned by good crews and carry at least twice the payload the Japanese bombers do... as to damage done, this is the same as having 10 stock bombs hitting the runway so you can imagine what damage we do and how long it takes to fix that damage... nearly no damage fixed in no time...

this is why I think it would have been better to destroy the Dutch airforce before you actually invade... not that the Dutch would such a huge threat - especially due to the fact that the bombers nearly never fly nav strikes anyway - but you could still avoid these losses...

CF wondered why his Cap isn't more effective but with a 2 min pre warning a huge altitude difference between the bombers and the CAP and the Dutch bombers being faster than a Zero anyway I am not surprised the bombers got to the ships without even being attacked by any of the fighters on Cap... one of the troop transports should be sunk...

all the sweeps go in at Semarang and wear down all of KB's leaking Cap but NONE of the bombers shows up, they didn't even take off... this strike routine is so seriously borked it could not get any worse... what do you think would have happened in real life? Would the bombers just sit there doing nothing if the enemy got dozens of ships unloading an invasion force 180 miles away? Would they refuse to take off if they were ordered to do so? That's exactly what happens all the time in the game when you order nav strikes... crazy and a very strange way to make it less bloody to be honest...

halve of the IJN sitting off Semarang and the five dozen available bombers do nothing even though they are ordered to attack... four out of five times nav strikes fail to launch and if you hit the 20% chance you got a fair chance your bombers either go in separated, fail to locate the target due to range or weather or if everything goes well, you see 40% of the available bombers attacking the target...

none of my bombers flew today, NONE! And this is happening for I don't know how often... means the sacrifice of the fighters was

... if the fighters all take off and fly to the target, what kind of silly explanation is there for a broken routine to not have the bombers attack the shipping? Clarifying again, not even taking off to attack the invasion convoys...

yeah, experience is going up nicely and the bombardments hurt the Japanese more than us anyway. It's not just an occasional ship, we have already brought in something like 60-70,0000 tons of supply and my ships were completely unharmed.

another waste of fighters over Java... we have escorts for the bombers, we hava more than one air HQ at the base, we have a level 5 airfield, not overstacked, we have 100,000+ supplies at the base, we have fighter squadrons flying sweeps, we have full detection (9/10) over the enemy base, the enemy convoys sitting at Semarang are spotted two dozen times each day with single ships being identified, the bombers have high morale, the weather isn't sh*t all the time either, the bombers only have to fly four hexes and every other frigin chicken sh*t is met too but the bombers just refuse to fly naval strikes... what a routine, you just have to shake your head about something like this... it would be no problem to launch 100% of the bombers at the base if I would order them on airfield or port attack against Semarang but they just refuse to fly naval strikes... this is a plain joke and couldn't be anymore unrealistic...

we have moved 200 of our best fighters to Port Moresby as we wanted to draw an enemy airstrike and have a convoy going to the base... as soon as CF spotted our airfield filled up with aircraft he ordered an attack and the first 24 Zeroes show up to tangle with our fighters set to 80/20 Cap/rest...

pre warning time wasn't existing as radar must have failed completely but our fighters did very well as our pilot quality is very good already... none of the pilots is below 70 air 60 def which really pays off and in about 4-5 weeks none of the pilots in these squadrons will be below 70 air 70 def which are the standard skill levels for all my fighter squadrons throughout the war... I also created a flying circus of my best pilots that are flying those early P-38 models but they did not take part in this engagement...

none of the Zeroes reached our base as we down nearly ten while damaging another dozen...

a second sweep that does seriously better than the first one shooting down more Warhawks than Zeroes lost over our base but again lots of Zeroes were damaged and it's a long way back home to Rabaul so surely lots of them crash with the pilots being lost... the Japanese got the same problems with fragments of sweeps arriving late but due to their bigger fighter units they get bigger sweeps and of course also bigger fragments that also do better than the usual 3 fighter fragments of Allied squadrons showing up late during sweeps... which is so silly by the way that it should have fixed years ago as this has been the same right since release...

oh, another fragment... what the combat report isn't telling but the replay was is the high number of damaged aircraft on the Japanes side and many dropped out of the sky... I really enjoyed watching these engagements today as it clearly showed that we can easily achieve and keep air superiority over our base against enemy Zeroes coming in from long range and Rabaul is the only base more or less being built up already (currently lvl 5 airfield IIRC) while PM is already nearing it's lvl 9 airfield which means it will then be more than a problem for the Japanese to build up their foothold around Lae which only has a meager garisson so far...

62 Zeroes shot down is overclaiming but four dozen lost will be pretty close I guess which is nothing nice for the Japanese as I am sure there were some decent pilots lost together with the aircraft... two dozen fighters lost on our side makes it a clear 2:1 for us which is absolutely ok for this stage of the war and considering there should have been quite a number of veterans flying those Zeroes means while the IJNAF pilot quality will go down by a margin, ours will still go up... the P-38 didn't take part of the engagements as planned but they were able to down 4 Zeroes for no loss in the end...

CF will surely think twice about ordering such a strike again... IIRC we have been leading the aircraft loss list since the beginning of the war and I don't consider giving this lead away again until the end of the war...

The problem I have with reducing the effectiveness of bombs in this mod is that it does not correct the severe deficiency in the effectiveness of low level attacks by fighters, fighter bombers and attack bombers. I find this tactic to be all too useless in the stock game and this really hinders the Allies in late war. The Allied player has to rely on level bombing to close enemy airfields and I question if you will be able to do so. In reality with the increased effectiveness of fighter bombers and low level attack bombers, the Allies were pretty much able to close any airfield they wanted after mid 43. I don't see that happening in this mod but we will have to see.

Does this mod reduce the effectiveness of torpedoes as well?

yes, both torps and bombs have effectiveness and accuracy changed. I was in contact with JWE and he provided some really good info and I am kind of testing it (for me personally) how it turns out in the game. My oppinion has always been that we see too many hits for not enough effect so in the case of SAP bombs (those are purely used for nav attacks) I would have gone the way to increase effect while reducing the accuracy. My oppinion on stock was that if the bombs had something like nearly twice the effect (if it is linear) but halve the accuracy then it would be realistic as we see too many bomb hits for not enough effect.

Babes has less bomb effect than stock and less accuracy, leading to the need of even more bomb hits which in the end often has created a strange feeling (to me), when you see a freighter happily moving on after being hit by 3x500lb bombs, not even being heavily damaged. Now I would tend to say that a freighter being hit by 3 such bombs in real life would be a sure kill in 99% of the time in real life.

I am not really sure how it will turn out in air attacks against airfields but it will be of course influencing the game as I need more or less twice the hits on airfields to do the same damage as in stock. Now while I have a clear oppinion on hits on ships (this is easier to determine for me as you can read up on lots of air attacks on ships) I am not sure on A2G attacks and due to the fact that I see JWE and the guys being the experts on that matter compared to me I trust that it will be more realistic for A2G. For nav strikes IMO it should have gone the other way, far more effect for a maximum of 50% hit rate compared to stock. As it is now, you need something like 30-50% more bomb hits to sink a ship compared to stock.

then there was this little success as the bombers finally flew (in very limited numbers considering we still have more than four dozen at Bandoeng)... I still don't get why our bombers don't fly, neither do I understand why the damned escorts don't show up... escorts weren't needed though as the bombers flew low enough to completely evade the Zeroes... as you can see, that xAP was hit by four 300kg SAP bomb, I would expect the ship to be sunk for sure in real life, here it isn't even heavily damaged... the other two ships hit by 300kg bombs aren't even on fire nor heavily damaged...

Carrier support unable to supply air cover..

so up until this attack I wasn't happy nor unhappy about this turn as we did at least score some hits... then my fully low nav trained DB-7B showed up over the carrier TF that had no air cover at all as all Zeroes were flying over Semarang (that's the downside of using carriers to cover an amphib operations when the enemy contests the airspace)...

three of the bombers score hits and all three 250kg bombs penetrated through the deck of the enemy carriers... needless to say that this wasn't amusing for Cuttlefish but in the end not there won't be much more than light damage to the carriers requiring some yard time... 2 500lb bombs going through the deck of a Japanese fleet carrier could do enough damage to see the ship sinking in real life if bad things happen, which is something that is hardly possible with the reduced bomb effect... I expect to need at least 8-10 of those bombs to sink an enemy fleet carrier, perhaps 5-6 1000lb bombs... could even be more as I have already seen enemy CA taking four 1000lb bombs (all penetrated) and the ship wasn't reported as heavily damaged...

I would really cheer about the two bomb hits on Kaga in stock, I'm still happy to score them in this case but I have to remind me every time again that this is like scoring two hits with stock 250lb bombs which could mean Kaga only suffered perhaps 15-20 sys at best with little floatation or eng damage...

the last sweep goes in, as you can see Kaga still able to launch fighters with two holes in her flight deck after the two 250kg bombs went through it... despite good weather in the afternoon, we didn't fly any strikes against Semarang nor against KB...

my bombers seem to nearly never fly nav strikes but if they do they seem to achieve more than one could expect from the Dutch... granted, usually a Japanese player easily knocks out the Dutch airforce by bombing them on the fields but this is something CF hasn't done at all... I would be absolutely happy if my bombers would have flown their ordered attacks, now that my fighter squadrons are completely worn out there is nothing to hope for anymore...

more Zeroes claimed to be shot down than I expected but who knows how accurate the claims are, I would have only thought about three or four IJNAF fighters downed... the success of our bombers sure was worth the loss in fighters, the main problem now is that there are nearly none left and those squadrons that still got some aircraft have terrible morale so they became useless...

I really have to wonder why CF still tries to bomb Batavia, he obviously still hasn't noticed that my strikes are coming from Bandoeng's airfield (also no recon over that base yet)... two or three attacks hitting the airfield would have torched my bombers on the field long ago as there was never any Cap over the base (need the fighters for sweep/escort) and my bombers don't fly anyway thanks to the design decision to make it nearly impossible to fly nav strikes at short range with all possible conditions 110% met...

have kept most of the rest of my available fighters on sweep (with the few remaining fighters on escort) as I hoped once more to see my bombers fly nav strikes... as you can see, KB still is on station, even the two carriers that took bombs through their flight decks are still part of KB covering the convoys at Semarang... if CF would have paid a little attention bringing some air support to Semarang he could fly 50 fighters from it's airfield but he didn't, so he has to keep KB near his convoys if he doesn't want to purely rely on the routine sabotating my nav strikes that also today 100% refuse to fly... S I L L I N E S S in it's perfection so to say...

unintersting day, time for a strategic overview... as you can see the enemy has nearly reached the historical conquests but fails to achieve anything at Clark Field, we massed the Dutch Army on Java at Bandoeng (mountain base - tough target), Langsa holds on Northern Sumatra (not attacked yet) and our troops on Mindanao have retreated to the mountains in the inner of the island...

these bases will of course fall at some point but it will take time and we will also inflict losses on the enemy in the meantime... the slow enemy advance on various fronts and the further delay at my strongholds has enabled us to fully strenghten our frontlines which means that any enemy attempt to break through our defended lines will be a bloody affair and I'm really confident at the moment... as it stands now I even doubt Cuttlefish will try for bases like Darwin, PM, Fiji, Perth or any other important areas that goes further than he as advanced so far...
