Air losses for the day according to the intel screen. Rots of Zero Op losses. It's a rong fright from Koepang.

46 Zeroes

You lost a P-40K to flak?! What'd the guy do, piss off his wife or Mayan housekeeper or something?

For those who don't know the test is something like 90 minutes long, in two halves. First half is a series of putting little paddles at various places from your neck to your hand and taking reading, the second half is inserting needles and doing same. Oh, yeah, the readings are taken when an electric shock is applied between two points. Almost all of it is uncomfortable, most of it somewhat painful, and some of it downright painful. But, seriously, if you haven't had worse in your life you need to get out of diapers soon.

Boela is discovered to have a small "garrison", probably Korean slaves in diapers because they didn't trust them with guns. I am flying in a Marine Para Bn to Saumlaki to air drop with 503rd PIR.

Predictably, Ambon has a serious garrison. Sorong is not a push over. I think we will need armor for Sorong. Ambon will get a visit from Colorado in 2 or 3 d.

The garrison at Kopeang seems inpossibly small. Surface group spotted at Koepang, probably Ashigara or whatever that CA is called.

Flying in "fresh" P-40's to Saumalki and resting one of the carrier F4F squadrons which is down to 3 airframes. Carriers and Colorado to move north of Kai.

Well, it SEEMS like an eternity, but it is only mid January 1943(c). We are starting to get some new toys, Corsairs, torpedoes that work and LST's. Even so, we have only 2 CV's.

In Northwestern Oz, JJ's postion has crumbled completely. There are some 7,000 of the little buggers extant at Fenton, but not for long.

I have a feering..one of these days..their carriers are going to show up again, but they may be pulling back to the Gustav Line. Not sure where that it is, but they may be pulling back there.

My Dearest Spri;

Hope Miss Fanydingway has recovered her composure. Despite her propensity to concrete thinking, she is quite a lovely girl. I completely understand why you keep her around. As Sherman said, "war is a terrible thing but that doesn't mean one can't have a lovely secretary with long legs and an ample bosom".

We were thinking about Operation Yorker. If you are to leave from Colombo, we could transfer all of the APA and AKA capable vessels there and make the conversions in the yard there. They would then be ready in the third week of March for embarkation. The first wave of the landing, perhaps two or three divisions, could embark on the APA's, allowing a quick off-load at the beaches. This would reduce the risk to the carriers. JJ is certain to have a capable aerial force in the area by day 2.

When Benkoelen is seized, the second wave could come in under land-based CAP.

A late March landing could also allow the RN carrier arriving in Panama to be on scene.

With heartfelt tepidity

Saumlaki: 63 Zero fighter sweep sorties over Saumlaki today. This time the Army P-40's are on their own as the carriers are north of Kai. 49 P-40's on CAP duty. The P-40's did well, claiming 16 kills to 8 losses.

Then the Tojos showed up....24 of them. 6 P-40's were lost. No airfield attacks or antishipping attacks. I am going to bring up the P-38 squadron at Sydney that has been refitting and turn them loose over Koepang...followed by the B-24's now beginning to move to Darwin.

Sorong: Good raid by 17 B-17E and a few LB-30's. Couple of Helens destroyed on the ground.

Aircraft losses from the 14th over Saumlaki (mostly). I sent up a P-39 squadron to see how they perform. Fortunately, there were a few empty tents.

P-38's are on their way.

Cumulative Allied losses. The four fighter types that have paid the highest price are the P-40E, P-39, F4F and the Hurri IIb/c. Well, technically, I guess you would say the pilots paid the price.

Interesting ... the cumulative aircraft losses for both sides are only a few hunderd apart. A hard-fought campaign to date
(No, no, not the presidential one! I mean WWII(c), or whatever mark you are up to now)!

*****************January 15, 1943(c)****************

Saumlaki: More Tojo sweeps. JJ gave up with the Zeroes. The P-40E/K and P-39D did not do all that well, losing 12 to 6 Tojos downed. As there are no ships there, just a disbanded AVD and 10 PT boats, I have shut down all the CAP. Everything that can fly (except for a couple of Catalinas) was flown off and I packed the place with C-47's. If JJ picks this turn to raid the airfield or send in a surface group, it could be ugly, but the C-47's are needed to paradrop 503rd PIR(-) on Boela. 503rd PIR has a (-) because it was crushed at Dobo. When word gets out, Army airborne troops are goint to BEG to be sent to the ETO. I don't think there are enough transports (35) for the whole regiment but I didn't read the manual. Plus, Saumlaki is only level two. Even worse, 503rd is only 13% prepped for Boela. It may not work but I am pretty sure I wont get fired.

Boela: was bombed today. There is a construction Bn (Koreans in diapers) and a Bn of Naval Guard. I think all the poking around tipped off the LYB's. I wonder if they were flown in? Yesterday they had no guns? Today the intel is poor. Colorado and Portland are going to bombard the place tonight. A squadron of SBD's from the carriers and all the B-17's from Merauke are also tasked to attack.

(air complement at Saumlaki...please note that due to an oversight, two of the beat-up squadrons actually have the same Air HQ. This is accidental and any appearance of pranning should be regarded as spurious. As evidence of this, VII US Fighter Command is in Alice Springs )

Air losses for the day. JJ was caught with their trousers down at Myitkinia in a sneaky surprise raid by RAF B-24's and Wellingtons. That accounts for the Oscar losses on the ground.

What does your recon of Ambon tell you JJ has there? That's the intuitive next MLR in this area (other than Koepang, of course).

Yes, it is a natural bastion. They have 8 units 20K LYB and 73 Ronsons. That's why I am not going to land there.

I have a couple of units prepping for Namlea.
