I am not a happy Kiwi this morning, in fact I'm absolutely gutted.

Two New Zealand Defense Force ships, have been refused entry to Pearl Harbor. It is the first time in 28 years New Zealand has been invited to take part in the biennial exercise which this time is the biggest yet, involving 22 nations, 42 ships, six submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel. New Zealand is contributing 350 personnel and has sent the the Anzac-class frigate HMNZS Te Kaha as well as the HMNZS Endeavour fuelling ship.

This is in response to the anti-nuclear legislation banning nuclear armed or propelled vessels from our ports. USN ships are still welcome in our ports, as long as they are not nuclear armed or propelled vessels. The other 40 ships taking part in the Rimpac exercise are able to berth in Pearl Harbour, including the first Russian destroyer to take part in the exercise. So it is now clear how much the USN regards one of it's most loyal Allies.

Sorry you're upset about it, mate. I think the Kiwis are recognized as a very loyal Ally, in spite of this clearly political reprisal.

I'm sorry Des , but you are wrong. No USN ships have been allowed in New Zealand ports since the mid 1980's.. Your country will let us into exercises, but we can't make port calls. One NZ frigate, the Te Kaha , was allowed to port call in Seattle in 2010. That was the 1st one in 25 years. But New Zealand didn't reciprocate , and that ended that.

It's not enough that we have said we don't take tactical nukes to sea since 1991. New Zealand wanted inspections, in advance, in some other countries ports. Basically, they don't take the US governments word for it. So there it dies.

The only nuke vessels we have are CVN's and submarines. The only vessels that carry nukes are SSBN's. Every other country accepts the statement "we don't have nukes". New Zeland requires inspections. Basically they say, "of course we trust you. Now bend over so we can frisk you". This doesn't go over well.

Baron Letters? My english is deficiant

old old inside joke. I used to know a guy who like myself wrote alternate naval fiction back in the day. His main character was named "Baron Letters".....a distinquished fictional German naval officer from the Great War who took over from a killed Admiral Hipper during the Battle of the Dogger Bank. He won that battle and then took over the fleet for the Jutland engagement....using his own homemade naval wargame he proceeded to game virtually every British battleship and battlcruiser blowing up after hit after hit. Became sort of a running joke as MEIN GOTTT! got tossed around during the battle descriptions.

my favorite scene was where the 3 x KGV class battleships all blew up in sucession.

BOOM!

MEIN GOTT!!!!

BOOM!!

MEIN GOTT!!!!!

BOOM!!!!

MEIN GOTT!!!

Admiral Jellicoe: "Mein Head!!!!"

Mein Gott! Heil Kaiser Dir!

FYI.....nice to see the SLR's take a twisted turn.

Sorry, mate. It's their way of doin' business. Although I readily admit it's annoying as hell.

It's still better than the sudden eruption of deerflies we've had here in the last week. No notice-they just come and take a chunk out of you very quickly and fly away. In that context, a small little proboscis isn't all that bad...

Speaking of which, where's Onime?

Under the 2007 anti-nuclear legislation, inspections are not needed, and your word is good enough. The problem is that the USN has a policy, that states that in will no devoluge when a ship is caring nuclear weapons or not.

Denmark has a similar nuclear policy to New Zealand, and doesn't allow nuclear armed or propelled vessels to visit it's ports either. But the USN dose ban Danish ships from it's port, so one would wonder about the USN's policy towards us.

But Steve's reaction to my post, goes someway to explaining to me the American view of us. That we are not really important to them, and the fact that my Son has served with US service personnel lately, is of no value what so ever.

I concur that. While US personell often try to show their respect in a way that almost seems unreal and thus almost played, we can't deny the facts. Compared with the US military, all of us are a joke. We have 4.500 soldiers in AFG now, and had to beg the US not to take away THEIR helicopters, so OUR wounded can be evacuated.
And how many soldiers do they have in AFG?

If we, inside the NATO, are honest: We can't do anythign without the US, and they can do everything without us. That doesn't really force a sense of taking everyone as an equal - which is perfectly understandable.

My reaction? Sorry Des, but you've got it backward. Every enounter I have had with Kiwi military forces has been more along the lines of your folks not having much desire to deal with us. I've had several Kiwi exchange officers who were hostile to coming here, and telling me frankly that they couldn't see much reason for the alliance, as NZ has no enemies and the USA has nothing but.

In 1991 George HW Bush pulled all tactical nukes off all us naval vessels . The only nuclear armed ships are SSBN's , which frankly , don't make port calls. Bush told the world, offered inspections, and that should have been that.

Des , New Zealand kicked the US out. And that's fine, that's your right and privilege. It's your country, your rules. And for 25 years both countries have accepted them. But if things have changed, then diplomats and leaders HAVE to talk. In 2010 a NZ ship pulled into Seattle. That was an opportunity. And it went no where. So please don't wave the "sacred alliance" here. There are bad feeling on BOTH sides. You kicked us out , we responded in kind. What's so hard to understand? But please don't go putting ALL the blame on the old EVIL USA. There is more than enough blame to go around.

Accept Ukraine into NATO. They have plenty of people.
