The question will be how much an effort Brad puts in stopping a landing at Mersing that will destroy almost all his air force over that one effort. How much of his navy will he commit here?? The key is the priority you place on follow up forces to land behind the 5th Division at Mersing.

That's what i'm thinking....it's risky, i know....but it gives me the chance to destroy his air force in a single battle.... that would open me the doors for an early Singapore bombing suppression....

If you were doing the conventional malaya invasion what else you could try is barge seaborn flanking moves down the coast. The extended map has some bases just for this. From George town or Alor Star you can hit Ulang Melingtang, Port Swettenham, Port Dickenson, all the way down to Batu Pahat all by barges and I don’t think anybody pays much attention to those bases. If they do it spreads out the defenses. Port Swettenham is on a line with Kuantan and batu Pakat is on a line with Mersing. You can use small coastal ships and those cool IJA Shipping Engineer units to do the same thing on the east coast, or at least threaten to do that and spread out the defenses even more.

DBB has a special breakout for some IJA Malaya divisions where the artillery is separate and the Infantry Regiments are just squads and battalion guns so they are easy to move this way. But you don’t want to recombine them and then split them up again because then you get some of the big guns in each split and you can’t load them quickly at all without leaving fragments behind.

A good trick is to suck the British up into defending the line of Kuala Lumpur, Temulo, Kuantan and then cutting them off with landings at Port Dickenson and Batu Pahat. When your opponent reacts to that, then hit Mersing with a coastal amph TF….it’s risky, I know.…but you sound like a risk taker.

It's the GreyJoy drinking game. Everytime GJ mis-spells a place name you most make a mental note to have an extra shot next time you are imbibing. Try it! But no driving!

Wow..I gotta try this extended map/DaBabes thing.

Cool idea on the barge invasions along the "West" coast of Malaya. They couldn't, however, have any escorts unless the IJN can also spawn patrol craft (like PT boats) from Georgetown for example.

In my view, QBall is much too experienced a player to get "sucked into defending" midway up the Malay peninsula, US878.  Give the guy some credit.  That is why he is building up Mersing and running from northern Malaya like the devil is right behind.  Oh, wait, the devil IS right behind!

You can try the Mersing gambit Ser Greyjoy, but I do not think it will bear much fruit.  Maybe by bombing his retreating forces you can knock them out of strat/move mode, slowing their headlong race toward Singers and giving you a chance to cut a few off.  Good luck on a rapid conquest of Malaya.  I think it is quite possible to get Singers by mid to late January.  Before that....against QBall, doubtful.

So, I'd economize, take a slower but forceful approach and aim/plan for Singers to surrender in late January.  He may try the evac game, so suppressing the AF as soon as reasonably possible would be a priority along with cutting off the sea lane with a SCTF.

I have seen IJN players run minesweepers into Singers over a few days, then follow that up with BB bombardments.  The coastal guns might get some large caliber hits, but the 6" guys will not hurt your BBs much at all.

In my practice 1st turn with GreyJoy, I set him up for a successful Mersing landing. He comes ashore with the 5th Division with all its components on the 10th. Up at Kota Bharu, he lands with all the components of the 18th Division.

Kota Bharu is taken on the 8th. The 18th Division is recombined and then divided into three combat commands. One heads SW along the rail line. The other two reload to make the short hook down to Kota Bharu. It will follow the 5th Division. Don't forget that the 5th Division is an elite formation with an experience of 90.

The Allies have the two Aussie brigades, but both their experience levels is just 50 with an AV of 77 each. The one at Kluong (remember this is DBB and there are a few more bases) can make it in time, but the other one at Johore Bharu will probably not. The Allies have to get the 11th Indian Division which starts up at Alor Star and Taiping into Strat Mode and recombined.

In my game as the Allies playing this mod (now in late January), I reacted like he was going to land at Mersing and he did on the 8th. I was barely able to get the 11th through and into Singapore, but he wasn't aggressive enough with his follow up forces, IMO. The 38th after Hong Kong, the 21st at Shanghai, and the 33rd at Nagasaki are a must at Mersing as follow up (if not these three, then another group of whole divisions). He just came across with 5th, 38th, & IG along with 5 infantry regiments. Needless to say, those 5 regiments are out of the war for the next two months. You have to come into Singapore with recombined infantry divisions or your regiments will be almost totally disabled.

It took me three games of failure in Malaya before I finally got the Mersing landing right. The first one had me keeping my troops in combat mode most of the time as I hadn't figured out the movements mechanics then. Getting into Singapore quickly is tough as I have learned.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 09, 41
Ok guys, my Mersing invasion fleet has finally being rebuilt (with the Kongos joining the Kaga and Ryuho) 5 hexes far from Mersing. However it seems that Bradd is really foreseeing this move and apparently he is mining Mersing (sunk 2 minelayers and 3 more are spotted at Mersing), while at least a CL is spotted in Singapore harbour.
At the same time our subs, east of Palembang, exchanged blows against brit DDs...they are probably part of Force Z (the mouseover shows a CV and a BC...so i guess its the POW and the Repulse).
Brad ambushed my Vals from Singora, placing 3 xAKLs at Georgetown...obviously my crack pre-war Val pilots went after those useless ships and got butchered by the AVG that was waiting for them.... My sallies, that were ordered to bomb the troops that were moving back southwards from Georgetown, got ambushed too.... at the end of the day i lost 18 pre-war priceless bombers and 28 planes....for no gain
I'm still undecided what to do with Mersing....he's clearly waiting for me there...i should push forward but the disaster is always close..... this afternoon i'll think about it....
Thanks for your great ideas guys...the "barge" operation sounds really nice but first i gotta get the controll of the skies...and i'm still far from that gain!
His ships fleeing from the PI are moving east....some of them got intercepted by CVL Zuhio which is moving with the BBs towards Babodealp in order to support the operations in the southern DEI.
KB still moving towards Wake, while my Kavieng invasion force got ambushed by a group of Vindicators coming from Rabaul.... where do the come from? a CV? The Yorktown or the Saratoga probably....
Addak and Mitichikta are conquered without problems.
Now i fear the dreaded CAP trap over Mersing....if he puts there a SCTF with some LRCAP of the AVG i'll lose too many precious pilots.... what to do!? I need to get close but....
In China we're still moving.... our invasion force entered HK today and will soon start to bombard...

Sweep sweep sweep!

Nates - CAP and Escort missions
Oscars - Sweep and LRCAP of TF
Zero - CAP (CVs), LRCAP, and Sweep (I think they will not encounter many planes over Singapore as Brad will have his Buff on Escort to get his TBs through).

DMS - how many of them are in your transport TF headed for a possible landing at Mersing??

Transport TF - If Brad sends in some CL based TF to get into your transport, what warships do you have in them to counter?? They may get by your SC TF, so you need something there.

Heavy SC TF - Do you have one that you 'may' need to place south of Mersing as he will likely send in Force Z for a night time attack at Mersing.

Kaga and Co - You may have to have it placed so her Kates can range out to 7 hexes and be within 9 hexes of Mersing. Why?? To get a Force Z 'if' he comes for Mersing at Full Speed. How much will be devoted to LRCAP of transports??

Consider diverting a large Zero group from Takao to this area (Kota Bharu to help with LRCAP. Use your transports to airlift BF to Malaya. I set some of my TF at Full Speed to get those BFs across.

Moves...counter moves...moves...
Rinse, Repeat!

Edit - Vindicators have a transfer range of over 40 hexes. They came from a CV via Wake. Thus, they can be in the SRA in another day or two if he wants and with drop tanks, they can reach out to 10 hexes. They are old, but they carry a nasty punch. Beware!!

GJ,

ML means motor launch (a rather useless boat), not minelayers. CM is a mine layer. He could be mining with subs though. I would.

Yes, and the issue with a bunch of these little TFs around is that in addition to drawing off your air strikes they could mess with your combat TFs and amphib TFs as they move in. If the combat TF reacts out or just doesn't connect with these, they could force your amphib TF to back off and thus waste a day being vulnerable offshore and hit by raids from Singapore.

Are you following one with the other as you move in or putting them in patrol spots?

Mining Mersing harbor is just good sense regardless of Intel on IJ plans. No idea what is actually on his mind, though...

Yes, i've merged and recombined all my TFs.
Now Kaga, along with the CVL, are screened by 10 DDs and 2 CAs, while i have two SCTFs screening both the CVs and the transports. An Heavy one, with 2 Kongos and 4 CAs (along with 6 DDs) , and a lighter one, with 2 CAs, 1 CL and 4 DDs...

I'm waiting for Kota Bahru to be fully open and with an air HQ before starting sweeping Singapore. Don't wanna throw away my pilots with lots of scattered attacks. The thing i learnt in my other game is that Japan needs to always use the hammer...till you have that hammer on hand, it's better to play safe.

BFs are already moving towards Kota Bahru, but it takes time and the aviation support is very rare in this scenario...so i need not to overplace too many BFs in Malaya just to be without somehwere else

I'm planning to keep my Kates at 8 hexes from Singa, so that i won't be sucked into some death-CAP traps over there.
I'm also dispatching my subs in a defensive arc around Singa, in the hope of have some luck against Force Z

Boise and Houston have vanished from the Map....no sign of them

yup, those motor boats (whatever they are) costed me nearly 30 torpedos!!!!...hate them...but cannot do anything against them rather then hoping that my SCTFs will easily deal with them without reacting....

Ok...now it's time for some important decisions.... as Pax always says: decisions, decisions, decisions

I tend not to use too much the "follow" order.... the lead TF is always a SCTF and that means that i can easily react, bringing with it the whole convoy!
Now i'm moving my TFs indipendently, trying to calculate their movements point and plotting every single waypoint...it is working so far

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 10, 41

Well, at the end, my cowardice prevailed and i abbandoned the idea of a "retarded Mersing gambit"...sorry Micheal :-(
I sent the main invasion TF towards Singora, while the smaller one, along with the two CVs and the BBs moved south towards Singaweng....

I sent 3 DDs to sweep Mersing....they reacted and moved towards Tandjoengpinang (south of Singa) where the enemy TKs were loading fuel to deny it to me....
We sunk there 5 TKs but then the swordfishes and some american DDs made their job and sunk 2 of my DDs....
My CVs wasted again their torps against useless AMcs that moved eastwards from Singa...., while my Nells took off to attack his damned motorboats at Mersing...(lost 3 Nells!!)

Our recon rgt repulsed an attack south of Kota Bahru....but we're moving very slow...and the damned brits are managing to move southwards...

The Boise and Houston have finally been detected! They are moving east of Mindanao...right in front of my invasion TF....Zuiho and and CVE, along with 2 BBs are moving towards the area but i fear i won't have the time to save my invasion force...

Despite positioning a lot of DD flottillas near Manila, his ships are always escaping and i'm managing to sink just a bunch of them....

In China he attacked Ichang with a HUGE army....despite the air bombings my reinforced division was repulsed with heavy casualities... and now we've lost our first base in China...not a good start

Let's now hope to get Sinkawang so i can estabilish a base in NW Borneo...which will be very important for the future advances.... but i know the Force Z is there lurking in the shadows...

Today we managed to shoot down 8 of his planes...against 4 of ours...not bad...

Sweeps will start tomorrow against Clark Field, while our 14th Army will attack Lyngayen.

Another american CA is spotted near Tarawa....

the best news of the day is the great success of the last one of my Midget subs....a torpedo hit against a damaged BB in PH!!!! BANZAIII!!!! The heroic mini-sub is lost but he did a wonderfull job!

I keep on feeling "slow".... it seems to me that i'm moving far too slow to be on time.... but probably it's just a perception....

That disaster at Ichang really upsets me.... a division and a bde trashed for nothing.... how could 2 strong japanese units, behind 3 forts and helped by the air bombings suffer a 1-7 odds?? The first of a long series of bloody noses...me guess

You'll have to fight that feeling of being behind. You aren't. It's too ealry yet. But if you yield to that feeling, you'll grow desperate to "regain" your timing, in which case you'll do risky things that won't work. So relax. It's early. Keep playing boldly but don't take unreasonable risks. Look for a chance to pounce or for luck to favor you with a break, then take advantage of it.

As for Ichang. Big deal. You lost 142 squads. That's nothing. Retire the division and let it recover. Make sure the Japanese army is in good defensive terrain when it fights. If Q-Ball creates monster armies, make sure you have strongly fortified bases any which way his army might move. If he has a monster army at Ichang, he's going to have some weak points elsewhere.

Wise words, as always, my friend.

At Ichang i was overconfident...i thought the chinese couldn't defeat a division behind 3 forts...lesson learnt!

And you're right. Let's stay calm. Don't get nervous. Don't lose your mind.

stay focused!

The Chinese are tough when massed, especially if they can gain some experience by overwhelming small (too small) Japanese armies. So, the first thing to attend to in China is to make sure that your main cities that are subject to being attack have garrisons large enough to hold off any group of Chinese that can reach them before reinforcments can arrive. Make sure that your MLR is tight and strong. That's even more important than going on the offensive. But once you know where Steve's big stack is, you'll be better able to find isoalted Chinese positions that you can hit strongly.

If he's got a massive army at Ichang, then Chenghow/Sian sector should be fairly weak right now. Also, Nanning/Liuchow to the south of Changhsha should be weak. So, attend to your ring of bases within striking distance of Ichang while also gathering strong armies on either or both wings.

The Chinese have a hard time mainting fighters on the front lines due to lack of supply. If Q-Ball commits fighters to a base with low suplpy, he risks disablement and never being able to get the fighter airworthy again. He can handle fighters at Changsha and Chungking, but Sian, Ichang, Liuchow, Kweilin and Nanning should be different propositions altogether.

The Allied airforce can fight well defensively, but Japan has a chance at breaking the back of the RAF in 1942. RAF fighter numbers are so low that Japan can win a war of attrition. So attrit him even if you're not getting a sexy 3:1 or 2:1 ratio of kills. Keep the pressure up under circumstacnes as favorable to you as possible.

Hi GreyJoy,

I know you're feeling pressure to move fast, especially as most advice given from the better players stresses speed. For what it's worth, don't sweat things too much. It's your first time with Japan and it's an entirely different beast from the Allied one. If it takes you a little longer to accomplish some tasks, so be it.

One thing I'll add, and I know you'll get tons of advice, is play your game. Speed is important, but speed also kills. If you find yourself making poor decisions in order to make a perceived deadline it will lead to problems. A well supported and planned advance is just as effective.

It's generally accepted that the original Ichang force can't hold against the big KMT army that starts nearby. IIRC that attack in real life was a diversionary move by the IJA. Thus, that loss falls into the "expected/no big deal" category. You're doing fine.

In China i'm still clearing the inner lines of my perimeter...wanna get rid of all those damned chinese units that keep on occupying my supply lines....
But yes, i'll try to manouver, i'll try to overwhelm him in the air...i'll try to do like Rader..."always the hammer".

Let's see... now the main concerns are Force Z (and the survival of Kaga and Ryuho) and the presence of Cl Boise and CA Houston in front of my Mindanao invasion fleet.... sweating...

I will add my voice to those more experienced above to just say, take a breath.

Playing the IJ is tough as you're on point every day for four months at least, and most often even longer. As you dictate the pace to the Allies, a good Allied player will react and mess with your timing. That is how it goes. Protect your forces first and foremost unless the goal is worth the loss, like Palembang.

At Ichang that was unfortunate, but he also took very substantial losses. Usually that army is around 2500 AV, so you got off lightly!

The best thing that could happen in China would be for him to get overconfident and attack you with one of those stacks. There is not enough supply and you can slow and maul those troops with air raids to the point they are ineffective, as you well know. But you want him to attack and not sit back in a defensive posture.

As for the Mersing try, you could also feint an invasion now that you've chosen not to land there. He will be ready and want to bite on something. Worth a try if you want to try to draw his forces out to be hit by your mini-KB and Netties. Keep the mini back from Singkawang though. That's awfully exposed and a wave of several SCTFs could break through to it from the Batavia area.

One other thing. Fast transport TFs with CL/DD combos work wonders for speed and better protection on many less well defended targets in the DEI. They can catch you up in a hurry and its hard for the Allies to react before a landing happens and the ships are gone.

Well, at the end, my cowardice prevailed and i abbandoned the idea of a "retarded Mersing gambit"...sorry Micheal :-(
I sent the main invasion TF towards Singora, while the smaller one, along with the two CVs and the BBs moved south towards Singaweng....

No big deal. You can master this opening in a later game. I would then land the Mersing troops (5th Div plus support) at Kuantan and drive inland from there.

Edit - He has bought out an P-40E group from Luzon and send them to Singapore. Thus, I would move a Zero group from Takao over. You will need to LRCAP your transport landings anywhere on Malaya as he will probably move his BFs in northern Sumatra down to the base two hexes south of Medan which is a size 2 AF. He could use the Chinese transport planes to fly over an Air HQ to provide torpedoes.

Kuantan is a better springboard for Mersing - I know that Mersing is possible but Leapfrogging down is my way of achieving it without due risk. CAP and move. Still achieve Singapore early Jan. Watch a counter attack at Signora.

Also the 21Div can be ferried up river in China (with care - watch garrison req. and CAP)

Just a thought...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 11, 41

A mixed day.

At Singkawang our landings started without opposition. Apparently he moved back Force Z (maybe to Palembang or Singapore); he didn't even send his bombers from Kuching. All my TFs were unmolested.
Now a consistent force is ashore and the base will fall tomorrow. Then we'll move in an Air HQ and we'll start to strangle Singapore and Palembang ....well, that's the plan anyway.

Ground combat at Singkawang (56,88)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 975 troops, 5 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 32

Defending force 6850 troops, 60 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 195

Assaulting units:
West Borneo KNIL Battalion
Singkawang Base Force

Defending units:
16th Naval Guard Unit
15th Naval Guard Unit
91st Naval Guard Unit
34th Field AA Battalion
8th JNAF Coy
II/124th Infantry Bn /5
6th JNAF Coy
III/124th Infantry Bn /5

At Kota Bahru, finally the Air HQ has arrived, along with several base forces. In a couple of days we'll be able to start sweeping Singapore. A couple of missions from Blenheims escorted by Buffaloes were repulsed without any damage. Following Micheal's suggestion, a Zero full Daitai is now being moved to Kota Bahru. It will be supported by 2 Oscar Daitais in the reduction of Singapore air strenght.

For what concerns Kuantan, i'm still uncertain about a landing there...It's true that i can LRCAP, but at the same time i have not enough surface forces to prevent Force Z and the brit-ducth CLs to arrive and destroy my plans. At the same time, the roads around Kuantan are so terrible that my 5th Division will take forever to get out... really don't know...

The Imperial G. Division is arriving at Singora, along with elements of the 55th ID. The 21st and the 4th are already being shipped to Malaya.

________________________________________________________

At HK the bombings are taking forever.... will concentrate more efforts in order to reduce this important base sooner.

_______________________________________________________

The bad news come from Mindanao.
Boise and Houston, along with a TF composed around CL Marblehead moved towards Jolo and found my amphib TF which was moving a base force to conquer that crucial base. I had 4 DDs in a separate SCTF but they reacted towards the Boise, leaving an open door to the Marblehead.... my TF was sunk and the base force gone.

Luckly we managed to get ashore at Zamboanga and Dumanquilas (western Mindanao). these bases should fall tomorrow.

In Luzon, we swept Clark, only to shoot down 5 old P-35s....seems that most of his P-40Es have been moved out (probably to Singapore).

___________________________________________________

In SOPAC, despite the disaster of the last days (where the vindicators from Rabaul sunk 4 transports), we managed to conquer Kavieng.... a first step towards Rabaul!

__________________________________________________

In CENTPAC, we're getting close to Wake. In 2 days we'll land, while the KB is covering the invasion force.

An american CV is spotted near Makin, supporting a SCTF near Tarawa. Luckly we have hold our invasions there. Will wait for the KB to come down...

Overall not a bad day. I'm however concerned on how long is taking me to advance in the Mollucches (ambon and timor areas so to say)... I need fuel, i need supplies and i need base forces...but i don't have them at hand right now.... will have to wait... No rush, stay calm...i know i know...my mantra

Once again, good luck. Not being a JFB there's not much advice I can give, so I'll pretty much be a passive bystander here. Also, I don't plan on taking up the suggestion (John Dillworth's?) of drinking a shot for each Greyjoyism--that would kill most men. It would be fun for a while, though.

Cheers,
CC
