There seems to be a round hole in the side you havent fixed yet.

That's cos it's a shufti kite and she would've been designed for taking photos. So that hole is where the photographer used to sit, when the Spit got over the target the pilot would roll through 45 degrees so the guy in the back could use his camera to take his pictures.

Youre not joking are you?

Nope. Obviously it had to be a little chap around 5' 6" or so and no more than 120lbs, there isn't much room back there and it's impossible to bail out in an emergency. It also upsets the centre of gravity a bit, although that is partially offset by the fact the Griffon is such a big engine and it's so far forward along with the huge 5 bladed prop.

sounds like a highly attractive job!

He had to tilt the pilot's seat forward and fit himself in behind. Then the seat was secured in the normal position and the pilot climbed in. A bit of a rigmarole but they were trying to keep the number of openings to a minimum for the pressurisation.

Aye, and then about 50 years after that it gets rewritten by someone else. If nothing else, winning meant we got Dad's Army and a good episode of Fawlty Towers.

Indeed and it's a shame that it had to come to what it did. But in the end it's helped to make the world what it is, probably far safer than if he hadn't turned up.

The Russians helped too, I think.

Pretty sure I can guess how you feel about that one though.

you mean... the brits actually had the technology to operate a camera remotely? I don't believe that. I think your first story is true!

If the Swede can do it, then so can I. While "lend lease" is well known, people outside of this forum generally don't know about "Reverse lend lease". The USAAF recived Spitfires,Mosquitos and Beaufighters. The USN received Spits for observation duties over the Normandy beaches (vice Kingfishers, which we assumed wouldn't survive). Here's an early (1942) USAAF edition in the UK.

Some did. But the German....foreign policy....at the time didnt make it very easy to like the liberators.

On the positive side, the post-war German culture gave us...

Thats because Americans refused to take pictures unless someone could hear them say "cheese".

Not just recon birds either...

They operated some 600 spitfires all up.

Yes, that's what I thought. The Brits had painters on board to paint the scene.
I heard the Italians planned to land and ask for informations while the french were just planning to drop white flags.

Women's triathlon right now. Too sad they only do the "olympic distance" (go figure). I'd love to see them do the long distance. But all nicely trained women. Nice to watch
