Combat

62 X B-29 attacked Krung Thep, doing moderate damage to the airfield, causing many secondary explosions and inflicting moderate casualties. The 3rd Indian Division was attacked by 7 X Frances (1 damaged) and had very light losses. The continued expenditure of ordinance by Japanese artillery to obtain no results is rapidly becoming an amusement to the Allied troops. They have taken to calling the gunners all sorts of names in derisive manners.

Koepang was raided by 11 X B-24D and 5 X P-38J. 7 of the bombers were damaged by AA, the port had light damage, there were a couple of secondary explosions and casualties were very light.

Lautem was hammered by 141 X B-25J and 24 X Kittyhawk III. A bomber was damaged by flak, the airstrip was heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions triggered and losses were moderate.

The 2nd Amphibious Brigade, at Palau, was subjected to moderately light losses when 58 X P-38J (2 damaged) and 21 X P-47D hit it. Next up were 11 X SB2C (1 damaged), 18 X P-39D (1 downed, 1 damaged) and 21 X P-47D who struck the airfield for very light damage and a secondary explosion was seen .

The 5th New Chinese Corps had light casualties from an attack made by 9 X Helen.

Kwajalein's port was lightly damaged as 36 X PB4Y (2 damaged) and 24 X P-47D attacked. There were some secondary explosions and very light personnel losses.

The Chinese attacked again about 87 miles SW of Sian. No ground was gained, the Japanese had moderately heavy losses and the Chinese lost heavily.

Tavoy witnessed the Japanese defenders being shelled again and having moderately light losses.

The Japanese hurled an artillery barrage at the Chinese troops about 82 miles W of Changsha, but failing to harm anyone.

Yesterday Gil was leaving the beach when he ran into a group of submariners who were billeted at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. They persuaded him to join them for a drink. Gil was never a boozer, but he agreed to join them “for just one.” Today he awakened with a hangover that was awful. He also feels like he has cotton in his mouth. He looks around and has no idea where he is when suddenly a Shore Patrol jeep pulls up to him. “Hey pal you look lost. Need some help?” Gil replied that he had no idea where he was, but that he needed to get back to Wheeler. “Hop in and don't say a word about this to anybody as I wouldn't want our bad reputation to be ruined,” the man said. Off they went and when Gil arrived at the barracks he found some of the Lucky 11 looking like he felt. They showered and then headed off for some chow, exchanging stories of their adventures of the night before. Gil told them that he remembers nothing after having some drinks and that he caught a right back to the base.

Gene thought he was being followed on his way home, but he was to tired to really care or to try and do anything about it. He had something to eat after a shower and then hit the hay.

The men of the Lucky 11 head off to indulge themselves again today. Tomorrow they are scheduled for a training flight so Jake tells them that they had better be back in time for it and that drunkenness will not be tolerated.

FDR signed the GI Bill Of Rights, funds for housing and education after the war for US servicemen.

60 Luftwaffe planes surprised the USAAC shuttle base at Poltava in the Ukraine. 44 B-17s and 500000 gallons of fuel were lost.

The Russian summer offensive “Bagration” began with 124 divisions, 12ooooo men 5200 tanks, 30000 guns and 6000 planes. The Germans have 63 divisions, 900 tanks and 10000 guns.

Combat

The SS Sturdy, 77 miles SE of Singapore, spotted a pair of very heavily escorted APs. She never got a decent setup and ultimately gave up the chase.

Ed's Old Gals conducted a naval bombardment of Palau with the CL Nashville taking 4 hits and the BB Arizona 3. The port and airfield were very lightly damaged, a few secondary explosions were seen and the troops sustained very heavy losses. The 2nd Amphibious Brigade was jumped by 17 X P-47D and 57 X P-38G (1 destroyed, 1 damaged) for extremely light losses. Later 13 X SB2C (2 damaged), 16 X P-39D (1 downed) and 18 X P-47D did light damage to the airfield.

Koepang was raided by 27 X B-24J and flak damaged 3 of them. The port was lightly damaged, a few secondary explosions were reported and casualties were moderately light.

Lautem was hit by 48 X B-24D. AA fire downed 1 and damaged another. The airfield was moderately damaged and personnel losses were light.

Port Moresby was raided by 33 X B-17E who managed to do light damage to the port, trigger some secondary explosions and inflict very light losses.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force had no losses despite the efforts of 9 Helens.

Krung Thep witnessed the Japanese artillery inflict very light losses on the Allied troops.

At Tavoy the Allied gunners caused moderately heavy Japanese casualties.

At the crossroads W of Changsha the Japanese artillery scared the Chinese into staying down.

The Japanese unit, under Chinese pressure, pulled back from it's positions 83 miles SW of Sian.

Another general attack on Tavoy for tomorrow morning has been ordered. Some additional infantry brigades are being thrown into the fight.

Ship's captains are meeting on Ulithi to get their orders for the pending invasion of Palau.

Stick seems to be living in a Corsair cockpit as he's now flown plenty of combat missions plus who can count how many CAPs. The elusive first kill continues to evade and vex him.

The training mission was long and the Lucky 11 are pooped from it. After the debriefing they head off to wash up, eat and get some sleep. Tomorrow they will have 2 day passes at their disposal.

Pete is talking to some of his regular customers and of course the topic is the war. What they all are trying to understand is why the Japanese have been allowed to remain in such close proximity to Oz. In the meantime mother and baby are busy with another diaper change. The laundry is being kept busy as Pearl is a prolific diaper dirtier. She is still keeping her parents from getting a decent night's sleep.

Gene is finished with work and he heads to the bar with a group of the guys from the yard. After a beer he leaves and heads home, to tired to care about anything other than his bed.

Red and Cookie have a new partner and more land titled to them. “Taking in the lawyer was a good move,” says Cookie. “Now our debt is lower, we have more land and our legal fees have disappeared. If only this war would end.” Red is only half listening as he watches Lucky racing around on the deck.

The 2nd Marine Division is fit and ready to go, but they get no orders. Slim went swimming with the rest of his guys and the exercise helps to relieve the nervous tension.

Sam once again watches a Betty circling above and he wonders if the Japanese really know the situation on Tori Shima from these recon flights. A division to defend this little place will certainly not make it an easy nut to crack. Now if they only had some coastal artillery.

Eden told the House of Commons that about 50 “escaping” RAF officers at Stalag Luft III were murdered.

Combat

Krung Thep was raided by 36 X B-29 and the Japanese had 3 X George and 8 X Irving on CAP duty. The Georges never managed to get into the action and the Irvings had 6 planes damaged in the halfhearted attacks that resulted in a damaged bomber. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions and moderately light personnel losses. The 18th UK Division was bombed by 9 X Helen, 2 of which were damaged, and casualties were light. The 25th Indian Division was hit by 9 X Frances (1 damaged) and had no losses. The 3rd Indian Division was pounced on by 11 X Frances (1 damaged) and absorbed very light casualties. Japanese artillery caused extremely light Allied losses.

Dili was the target for 35 X B-24J and 42 X P-38J. The port was lightly damaged, there were a great many secondary explosions and casualties were light.

Palau had it's airstrip bombed by 29 X B-24J and the AA fire damaged 2 of the bombers. The damage done was moderate and a couple of secondary explosions were observed . Later in the day 12 X SB2C (1 damaged) and 19 X P-47D caused a secondary explosion at the port. The 2nd Amphibious Brigade was targeted by 52 X P-38G (3 damaged) and 18 X P-47D and the troops suffered no casualties.

Port Moresby was hit by 45 X B-24D and there was a lone secondary explosion for their efforts.

The IJA 36th Ind. Mixed Brigade, defending Tavoy, was jumped by 68 X P-38J (4 damaged), 48 X Thunderbolt II (3 damaged) and 7 X Spitfire VIII. The unit sustained very heavy losses. Then the 36th Ind. Mixed Brigade was the unfortunate recipient of the attention of 33 X B-29, 105 X Liberator VI, 41 X B-24J, 57 X B-25J (4 damaged), 46 X Mosquito FB.VI, 24 X P-38J Lightning, 78 X Thunderbolt II (1 damaged), 11 X Corsair IV and 12 X Spitfire VIII. The ground shook beneath the pounding and by the time the dust had settled the Japanese had absorbed additional very heavy losses. Allied intel experts figured that the Japanese unit was left in a state of being combat ineffective. An Allied assault caused a further reduction to the Japanese defenses and both sides suffered extremely heavy losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had moderate losses due to 9 X Helen attacking.

The SS Haddock, 78 miles N of Jesselton, located Japanese ships on her radar and she proceeded to intercept them. 5 X PGs were escorting an AP, which the sub hit with 2 torpedoes. The target was heavily damaged and burning as the sub made good her escape.

Japanese gunners inflicted extremely light casualties on the Chinese at the crossroads near Changsha.

A Grace loitered peeking at Tori Shima and Sam and members of his squad tried to identify the plane type as it flew by them repeatedly. “Not the same as they've been spying on us with lately,” says one of the guys. It's the same old boring stuff as Sam leads a patrol along the beach in their area. He wonders if the Japanese could really surprise them with an attack. He doubts it as flying boats are almost always heading out or returning from patrols, the Corsairs keep a watch on the skies, the USN lurks and the base's radar probes always searching. He still feels that it never hurt anyone to be ready for whatever may come.

The Palawan moved to the wharf at Guam and began loading supplies. As usual the crew speculate where they're bound for this time. Some of them think that Red should know, but he tells them that stuff like that only the captain knows. “He'll tell us when we're on our way I expect,” he answers them. Lately he's been having nightmares about the sinking back in the early days of the war.

Bill is busy shuffling paper work and he's feeling tired so he heads to his bunk. He knows that he didn't write a letter to Sandy today, but the truth of it is that he's to tired and there's nothing to say that he hasn't said many times already.

FDR is informed of the impending attack on Palau. The briefing continues with the subject of some quick grabs of Japanese bases on the PNG coast. “How many of these we take depends on the Japanese response or lack of one,” the captain states very blandly. What FDR wants to know about is when the supply lines from the SRA to Japan will be severed. The answer is that the last pieces to the puzzle are now falling into place.

Combat

The SS Haddock spotted and attacked an AK being escorted by a PG 81 miles N of Jesselton. She hit the AK with 2 fish leaving it ablaze and a heavy list to port. The sub was never detected.

Krung Thep was raided by 16 X B-29 and between the CAP of 77 X Zeke, 31 X George, 23 X Jack and 31 X Frank and the flak 6 of the big silver birds went down and 4 others took damage. $ X George, 4 X Jack and a Frank were damaged. No bombs were dropped on target. Japanese artillery caused very light Allied losses while the Allied big guns caused very heavy casualties for the Japanese.

Kai Island's airstrip was hit by 138 X B-25J and 24 X Kittyhawk III for moderately heavy damage, many secondary explosions and moderate personnel losses.

Koepang was attacked by 31 X B-24D and 38 X P-38J with the AA fire damaging 11 of the Liberators. The port was lightly damaged and a lone secondary explosion was seen.

Gili Gili had it's airfield struck by 46 X B-24J and flak damaged 6 of the bombers. The strip was lightly damaged and a secondary explosion was reported.

Lunga was bombed by 44 X B-24J with the port taking moderate damage and there were light losses.

Palau was attacked by 36 X TBF and 9 X F4F-4. The port was lightly damaged and there were a couple of secondary explosions. Another strike of 12 X SB2C and 9 X FM-2 added light damage to the port.

Kwajalein had it's airfield and port attacked by 28 X PB4Y (1 damaged), 32 X SB2C and 21 X P-47D. The 2 facilities both took light damage and there were many secondary explosions.

The Japanese ships 23 miles N of Sansapor were attacked by 28 X SB2C, 18 X TBM and 14 X F6F. They took the following damage according to the debriefings.
AP Jinsan Maru 6 bomb hits, 1 torpedo hit, sinks

There was a very large number of Japanese troops observed going into the water. All in all it was a good day's hunting for the Saratoga.

Tavoy witnessed an Allied bombardment that inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese defenders.

An ineffectual bombardment of the Chinese at the crossroads scared some scavenging dogs.

American commanders now know with certainty that the Japanese have been pulling troops back from their forward positions in the Solomons and PNG. There remains a mystery as to where these forces are going to despite the British expressing fears of growing Japanese strength in the Burma area.

Combat

The SS Sturdy, 80 miles NE of Batavia, attacked and hit an AK with 2 torpedoes setting it on fire and causing catastrophic damage. The 4 PGs escorting the sinking vessel never found their tormentor.

Krung Thep was swept by 66 X Thunderbolt II and they bounced the Japanese CAP of 3 X Zeke, 5 X George, 6 X Irving and 9 X Frank. As the battle raged another 12 X Irving joined in and that act enabled the Allied pilots to inflate the kill totals. 3 Zekes, 3 Georges, 18 Irvings and 9 Franks were shot down at no cost to the Allies other than fuel and ammunition. Japanese artillery inflicted moderate losses on the Allied forces in the area and the Allied guns caused very heavy Japanese casualties.

Palau's airfield was heavily damaged by 42 X B-24J who also caused a few secondary explosions and very light casualties. Later 35 X TBF (1 damaged) and 8X F4F-4 attacked causing a few secondary explosions. At the same time 11 X SB2C and 9 X FM-2 inflicted light damage on the port.

Port Moresby was bombed by 44 X B-17E and the port had moderate damage, a few secondary explosions and moderately heavy personnel losses.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was attacked by 9 X Helen and their bombs were dropped on already destroyed material.

The Japanese DDs near Tokyo were attacked by 12 X PB4Y, 5 of them were shot down and 2 others took damage from the CAP of 13 X Zeke, 13 X George, 6 X Jack, 21 X Oscar and 20 X Tony. 2 Zekes, 3 Georges, 2 Jacks, 3 Oscars (2 destroyed) and 2 Tonys were damaged in the fight. No hits were recorded on the pair of DDs.

Allied artillery at Tavoy was the culprit for the Japanese having light losses.

At the crossroads a Japanese bombardment had no effect on the Chinese other than pinning them in place despite their orders to withdraw.

The Red Army took Vitebsk.

The Danes held a general strike against the 8 PM to 5 AM curfew meant to fight sabotage.

American troops entered Cherbourg.

Combat

2 Japanese MSWs encountered a mine field at Batavia and commenced sweeping operations.

Krung Thep was swept by 21 X P-38J and 3 Zekes, 3 Georges and 4 Franks were aloft. All of the Zekes and 3 Franks went down before the Lightnings' determined attack and the others fled. Allied troops had light losses due to being shelled and the Japanese had very very casualties from the Allied guns.

Port Moresby had it's port hit for moderately light damage, many secondary explosions and moderately light casualties.

Palau was attacked by 12 X SB2C, 27 X TBF and 14 X F4F-4 who managed to do light damage to the port, cause a couple of secondary explosions and inflict very light casualties at no cost to themselves.

The Japanese ships 29 miles N of Sarmi were attacked by 28 X SB2C, 18 X TBM and 14 X F6F. A PC was struck by 3 bombs and an AP took 4 bombs and a torpedo. Both vessels were burning and heavily damaged. Japanese troops took to the waters to avoid the flames. Later the PC slid under the oily waters.

Tavoy was the scene of an Allied artillery bombardment that caused heavy Japanese losses.

At the crossroads the Japanese threw some ordinance at the Chinese, but failed to hurt anyone.

Ed's Old Gal form up for another run at Palau.

The Russians took Orsha and destroyed the German 53 Korps.

Combat

A Helldiver has spotted an AP near Sarmi and reported a hit. In the afternoon 28 X SB2C and 15 X F6F attacked the Japanese AP and they claimed no fewer than 13 bomb hits, sending it to the bottom.

An SB2C spotted an AK near Hollandia and reported a hit. Later in the day the Japanese AK was attacked by 18 X TBM and the ship was hit by a solitary torpedo which did heavy damage and caused fires. Troops took to the waters in an effort to escape the sinking ship.

Ed's Old Gals hit Palau with a naval bombardment and the Japanese fired back hitting the BB Tennessee 5 times. The port and airfield took light damage, there were a couple of secondary explosions and personnel losses were very heavy.

The SS Jack, near Bangkok, tried and failed to attack a couple of heavily escorted APs. She went undetected.

The mine field at Batavia continues to be swept.

The SS Croaker, 72 miles W of Okinawa, hit an AK with 2 torpedoes and the 3 PGs and 2 PCs milled about while the sub made good her escape. The AK was a roaring inferno when last observed. Later in the day she managed another attack on a different AK and hit it with a torpedo.

Lautem was bombed by 45 X B-24D and 1 was damaged by the light and inaccurate ground fire. The airfield was moderately damaged, a secondary explosion was reported and moderately light losses were absorbed by the personnel.

Port Moresby was struck by 43 X B-24J and the airfield was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions and light casualties.

Tulagi's port was targeted by 41 X B-24D for moderately light damage and a secondary explosion.

The IJA 37th Division at Tavoy was attacked by 31 X B-29 Superfortress, 82 X Liberator VI (3 damaged), 31 X B-24J Liberator, 50 X B-25J (1 damaged), 39 X Mosquito FB.VI and 8 X Thunderbolt II. The unit sustained very heavy casualties. The IJA 36th Ind. Mixed Brigade was also hit by Allied aircraft as 6 X B-29, 27 X Liberator VI (1 damaged), 6 X B-24J, 5 X B-25J, 6 X Mosquito FB.VI and 2 X Thunderbolt II caused heavy losses. An Allied assault caused both sides to have extremely heavy losses. The Japanese defenses were rolled back a bit and Allied commanders hope to breach the line in the near future.

The 2nd Amphibious Brigade on Palau was hit by 48 X P-38G (1 damaged), 12 X P-47D and 7 X F4F-4 for negligible losses.

The 18th UK Division at Krung Thep was bombed by 3 X Helen and had extremely light casualties. The 25th Indian Division fared worse as 15 X Frances struck the unit and inflicted moderate losses. The 25th Indian Division was jumped by 3 X Helen and had no casualties. Light Allied casualties were the result of a Japanese artillery barrage. Allied artillery caused moderate Japanese losses.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was attacked by 12 X Helen and had no losses.

Bangkok was under an umbrella of 46 X Zeke, 12 X George, 12 X Jack and 18 X Frank when an Allied fighter sweep consisting of 46 X Thunderbolt II and 102 X P-38J attacked. The Japanese valiantly gave battle and every one of them was shot down at the cost of 10 Thunderbolt II downed (5 damaged) and 2 P-38J damaged.

Another Japanese bombardment at the crossroads kept the Chinese heads down, but caused no harm.

The Lucky 11 continue to enjoy Hawaii's beautiful weather. They had another training flight this morning, but it was a short hop out and back. Gill writes a letter to Elaine and hopes that his mail catches up to him sooner rather than later.

Still having not much to do other than watch the Japanese taking peeks of the island, Sam has taken to taking afternoon naps.

The Soviets took Mogilev.

The British were stopped near Caen by the Germans.

Combat

The SS Croaker, 22 miles W of Okinawa, found a lone AK and fed it 2 fish which spelled the demise of the ship.

Hailar was swept by 27 X Yak-3. There were no Japanese planes in the air. This was not ordered and an investigation will be made. In the meantime Tokyo will be notified that this was unauthorized.

Bangkok was swept by 106 X P-38J and the Japanese threw 42 X Zeke, 18 X George, 12 X Jack and 23 X Frank at them. The Allies lost 17 aircraft and had 5 others take damage as they shot down 36 Zekes, 16 Georges, 11 Jacks and 17 Franks.

Krung Thep was swept by 37 X Thunderbolt II and they were opposed by 6 X Zeke, 6 X George and 8 X Frank. 3 Zekes, 5 Georges and 6 Franks went down before the blazing .50 cals of the Jugs. A lone Allied plane suffered some damage. Then 37 X B-29 (2 damaged) and 39 X B-24J (5 damaged) attacked and 2 Franks tried to stop them and were shot down. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions and troop losses were heavy. Yet another raid comprised of 29 X B-29 came on, but they missed the target and the 2 Zekes in the air never made an attack. Artillery duels raged again today and the Allies had no losses while the Japanese suffered very heavily.

Kai Island was attacked by 140 X B-25J, 16 X P-40N and 22 X Kittyhawk III. The airfield took heavy damage, there were some secondary explosions, an Emily was destroyed and the personnel losses were heavy.

Lautem was struck by 38 X B-24J, 2 of which were damaged by AA fire. The airfield was moderately damaged, a secondary explosion was seen and casualties were extremely light.

Palau was raided by 31 X B-24J and the airstrip had moderate damage and there was a secondary explosion.

Lunga was hit by 33 X B-24J for light damage to the airstrip, some secondary explosions and light casualties.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was attacked by 12 X Helens who dropped their bombs on the destroyed remnants of the Chinese unit, doing no harm.

Tavoy was the scene of an artillery bombardment that inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Chinese troops had extremely light losses due to a Japanese shelling at the crossroads.

Stalin is overjoyed that the Germans are crumbling before the onslaught of the Red Army. He is gradually casting his eyes towards the Japanese. His intentions are to recoup territory lost by the Czarist fools not so long ago.

70000 Germans of Army Group Center surrendered near Bobruisk. 16000 were killed, and 18000 more Germans were captured near Minsk.

After having detached the CL Denver and the DDs Philip and Schroeder they made for Hollandia. An AK was caught there and repeatedly hit by the ship's guns, which sent her to the bottom. The ships will now rejoin the CVTF loitering to the NE.

Ed's Old Gals poured a naval bombardment into Palau and the BB Tennessee was hit by the Japanese 4 times, chipping some paint. The port and airfield were lightly damaged, a secondary explosion was observed and troop losses were very heavy. An air strike of 11 X SB2C, 32 X TBF and 13 X F4F-4 did light damage to the port and caused very light casualties.

Bangkok was under a CAP of 31 X Zeke, 15 X George, 7 X Jack and 18 X Frank when a sweep of 50 X P-38J dove on them. 17 Zekes, 10 Georges, a Jack and 9 Franks were destroyed while 9 Lightnings went down and 3 others took damage.

Krung Thep was swept by 38 X Thunderbolt II, but there was no Japanese opposition. Then 37 X B-29 and 36 X B-24J (2 damaged by flak) came on and caused moderate damage to the airfield, some secondary explosions were claimed and personnel casualties were moderately heavy. Another strike made up of 34 X B-29 appeared and added light damage to the airstrip, a couple of secondary explosions and light losses. The 3rd Indian Division was attacked by 5 Helens, 1 of which was damaged, and had extremely light losses. The Allied troops underwent an artillery bombardment and had light losses. Allied artillery caused heavy Japanese losses.

Port Moresby was raided by 30 X B-24D who caused moderately light damage to the airfield and light troop losses.

Lunga had it's airstrip lightly damaged by 25 X B-24J. There was a single secondary explosion and light casualties.

The IJA 49th Division, at Tavoy, was attacked by 37 X Liberator VI (1 damaged), 6 X Mosquito FB.VI and 11 X Thunderbolt II. The unit sustained heavy casualties. At almost the same time the IJA 36th Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped by 65 X Liberator VI (1 shot down, 6 damaged), 40 X Mosquito FB.VI, 64 X B-25J Mitchell and 13 X Thunderbolt II who inflicted very heavy losses on the unit. An Allied assault gained no ground and both sides suffered extremely heavy casualties.

Elements of the IJA 1st Ind. Brigade, at the crossroads was attacked by 68 X B-25J (1 destroyed, 8 damaged) and 24 X P-40N. The unit had heavy losses. Japanese gunners failed to inflict any harm on the Chinese troops.

The Japanese response to Moscow's apology was any Soviet flight over Hailar will be met with defensive measures. Moscow replied that peaceful recon flights will continue and that if they are attacked it will violate prior agreements. Any violation of said agreements will be treated as aggression and will be dealt with appropriately.

Gunny and Slim finished their chow and took a walk, enjoying a smoke and some talk. The training has stopped, but nothing seems to be in the pipeline. “Typical of the Corps to get us wound up and then leave us waiting,” says Slim.

Sam is bored out of his mind. He keeps telling himself that boredom is better than combat. The replacements continue to flow to the 25th Division and now the NCOs are busily integrating them into the various units and getting them up to speed. It wasn't so long ago that Sam was a raw recruit. Now he's a veteran of more battles than he'd care to think of. “It's the next one that scares me half to death,” he tells some of the other NCOs from the company. “The Japs can't just let us have this island so close to them. As soon as the Navy is stuck somewhere else we'll get hit.” The talk about the vast minefields laid around their little piece of real estate and all agree that some ships would also be welcomed.

Another boring training flight for the Lucky 11 last night. It was an exercise in navigation that ended up with Gil directing them to ride the beam as Willy couldn't get a fix on any stars due to cloud cover. Gil was exhausted by the time they touched down from the stress. The guys teased him about his not being able to sleep during the mission.

Gene was so tired from working a double shift today that he went home, showered and fell into his bed. He fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow and he didn't wake up until his mother woke him the next morning. He grabbed a quick breakfast and then hurried back to the yard. “He's working to hard, to many hours,” his mother says to his father. His father says that it's better to be dead tired from work than dead fighting overseas.

The US severed diplomatic relations with Finland.

The SS Haddock, 195 miles N of Brunei, hit a TK with a torpedo and then made good her escape despite the efforts of 3 DDs, 3 PGs and 3 PCs.

The SS Grouper, 142 miles SW of Sasebo, was attacked by 5 DDs. She will now make for Ulithi with moderately light flooding and light damage to her systems.

Japanese artillery caused light Allied losses while the Allied big guns inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Lunga's airfield took moderate damage from 54 X B-24J. There were many secondary explosions and personnel losses were moderate.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had light losses due to a visit from 9 X Helen.

An Allied artillery attack at Tavoy caused moderate Japanese losses.

Tokyo has informed Moscow that any Soviet planes in the Hailar area will be treated as hostile. Stalin thunders, “So they want to break our agreements? Send a recon plane there tomorrow. If they want an incident we'll give them one. If they think that they can fight another enemy now then here we are. I will not allow these pigs to insult us like this!” The two countries teeter on the brink of armed conflict and much depends on the next few hours. Soviet fighter formations have all been placed on alert and CAPs are being flown as all training has been suspended.

Sam watches the Japanese plane fly by and he mutters that a Lightning ought to shoot the thing down. Other than the snooper not a single Japanese has been found on Tori Shima.

Stick has made arrangements with some Sea Bees for some liquid spirits for the squadron so that they may celebrate the 4th of July in proper fashion. Of course this all hinges on the demands of the war. The Flying Deuces have been very busy with daily visits to Palau and CAP missions. Stick, of course, still longs for his first kill.

Sandy got a few letters from Bill today and eagerly reads them, telling Dave that Bill's OK and misses them. “You mean he misses you,” laughs Dave as he crawls under a truck to check out a cracked axle.

Red sits in front of the radio on the Palawan listening to Tokyo Rose playing “A String Of Pearls” by Glenn Miller. Lucky is lying beside him gnawing away at a bone that Cookie gave him. As the dog changes the angle the bone makes a racquet against the steel deck of the ship.

Pete, Sylvia and Pearl are all doing fine, though dad and mom could use more sleep. Everybody tells them that Pearl looks like Sylvia and Pete says, “That's a lucky break for my daughter as mom is a beauty.”

The Bretton Woods Conference began. It is to deal with post-war financial and economic problems. The establishment of the IMF for reconstruction and development was announced.

The invasion of Southern France has been set for 8/15.

Since D-Day the Allies have landed 920000 troops, 177000 vehicles and 600000 tons of supplies.

Finally in the afternoon 11 X SB2C, 32 X TBF and 15 X P-47D then caused very light troop losses and a couple of secondary explosions. The Bennett limped back to Ulithi where her light flooding will be attended to. She also suffered moderate damage to her systems and she will join other ships bound for Guam and the Pearl Harbor.

Nanning was swept by 44 X P-38J and 11 Zekes and 2 Tonys gave them a lopsided duel as a lone Tony fled to tell the tale.

Bangkok was swept by 91 X P-38J and there were 44 X Zeke, 21 X George, 13 X Jack and 29 X Frank aloft to give battle. It was a bloody day as 25 Zekes, 14 Georges, 4 Jacks and 21 Franks were shot out of the sky. A Jack limped home trailing smoke, 11 P-38J were lost and 5 others took varying amounts of damage.

Krung Thep was subjected to a fighter sweep by 44 X Thunderbolt II, but once more nobody was home. Then the strike came on and went to work. The 37 X B-29, 32 X B-24J (1 downed, 1 damaged) and 5 X P-38J caused heavy damage to the airfield, a large number of secondary explosions were reported and personnel losses were very heavy. Japanese artillery caused very light Allied casualties and the Allied gunners hit for moderate Japanese losses.

Koepang was raided by 24 X B-24J, of which flak damaged 3. There was light damage done to the airstrip, many secondary explosions were claimed and moderate losses were absorbed by the troops.

Lautem was struck by 137 X B-25J (7 damaged), 24 X Kittyhawk III and 16 X P-40N. The airfield was subjected to moderate damage, there was a secondary explosion and moderate casualties were suspected.

Lunga was hit by 36 X B-24D for moderately light damage to the airfield, a few secondary explosions and very light personnel losses.

The 3rd Indian Division was attacked by 20 X Frances and 4 X Helen who ran into a LRCAP of 10 X P-38J. The fighters downed 2 Helens and damaged 3 of the Frances. The unit took moderate losses.

Elements of the IJA 5th Ind. Brigade, at the crossroads, was attacked by 64 X B-25J and 27 X P-40N. 7 of the Mitchells were damaged and the Japanese had heavy casualties.

The Japanese ships about 21 miles S of Hamamatsu were attacked by 9 X PB4Y and a pair of APs took a single bomb hit each leaving both ships burning.

At Tavoy the Allied artillery accounted for heavy Japanese casualties.

LT Robert Cage of the 23rd FG got his 16th kill today and no sooner had he started to pull out of his dive the plane began to vibrate and he heard the sound of being hit. These were no .30 cal Mgs, but 20mm doing their work. The right engine quit and he lost part of the wing. Bob immediately pulled the canopy back, unbuckled himself, stood up in his seat and jumped out. With a whoosh the plane was gone and he relaxed a bit when the chute opened. As he drifted down he pondered what he should do when he hit the ground as the Bangkok area was not exactly friendly territory. With a thump he hit the ground and as he attempted to get out of his chute's harness 2 Japanese soldiers appeared. At bayonet point they herded him back to their unit's HQs and from there he was taken to a higher authority. Along the way he was beaten a couple of times so that by the time he reached his destination he was swollen and bloodied.

Stalin looked over the recon reports and said to keep it up, “But, I want those flights over Hailar to continue on a daily basis. If a plane is so much as damaged the Japanese will be fighting against us once more.” He waves off protest from some generals and says, “The Germans are on the run and the Japanese are losing the war to the Americans and British. If we don't fight the Japanese there will be no gains for us there. I will have Japanese blood and it will come sooner than they think.”

Troops commenced loading onto transports at Townsville. The target is Port Moresby.

Von Rundstedt was replaced by Von Kluge.

The Germans evacuated Siena.

Combat

Nanning was swept by 48 X P-38J and 4 Zekes and a Tony had the misfortune of being aloft. The Lightnings sent the Japanese tumbling out of the sky at no cost to themselves.

Krung Thep was targeted by 34 X B-29 (2 damaged), 32 X B-24J and 15 X P-38J. The airfield took moderate damage, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were moderate. The 25th Indian Division was attacked by 7 Helens who ran into the LRCAP of 20 X P-38J. 4 Helens were destroyed and 2 Lightnings took damage while the unit had very light casualties. Japanese artillery tried and failed to do any damage while the Allied big guns inflicted heavy losses on their foes.

Dili's port was attacked by 42 X B-24J and 44 X P-38J. 3 Liberators were damaged by flak while the port took moderately light damage. There were some secondary explosions and very light personnel losses.

Buna was raided by 48 X B-17E, 46 X B-24D (1 damaged) and 21 X B-24J. The port was lightly damaged, there were a large number of secondary explosions and very heavy casualties.

The IJA 49th Division, at Tavoy was attacked by 34 X Liberator VI (3 damaged), 2 X Mosquito FB.VI, 18 X B-25J (1 damaged) and 13 X Thunderbolt II for heavy losses. The IJA 36th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hammered by 64 X Liberator VI (5 damaged), 46 X Mosquito FB.VI, 43 X B-25J (5 damaged) and 13 X Thunderbolt II for very heavy losses. Allied artillery contributed moderately heavy losses inflicted on the Japanese.

On Palau the 2nd Amphibious Brigade was jumped by 17 X P-39D, 31 X P-38G and 10 X P-47D for moderate losses. Then 12 X PB4Y, 12 X SB2C, 32 X TBF, 11 X P-47D and 14 X F6F struck and caused a couple of secondary explosions.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force had no losses despite the best efforts of 9 Helens. The few remaining men just sat and watched the Japanese bomb already destroyed things.

Elements of the 5th Ind. Brigade at the crossroads underwent a bombing by 59 X B-25J (6 damaged) and 37 X P-40N. Losses were heavy for the Japanese.

Near Jaluit 13 X PB4Y attacked the Japanese ships and did the following.

Many troops were seen going into the water.

FDR's speech writer is given his text back with suggestions for a rewrite of certain parts. The President plans to address the nation on it's birthday and he wants the speech to be a winner. The fighting spirit of the country remains high, but officials are worried that as the war continues to drag on the fervor will flag. In a meeting earlier FDR prompted his military commanders to “pick up the pace.” They informed him that they expect Port Moresby to be taken soon and then the plan calls for an overland march to Buna. In the Central Pacific area the CENPAC planning staff got the approval for a multi faceted plan that will hopefully see a severing of Japan's lines of communication with the SRA.

Stick looks around and remembers not to fly straight and level. He observes the carnage that is Palau and wonders how anybody could survive such a place.

Pete actually slept through the night for the first time in ages. Sylvia fed Pearl late and the baby didn't awaken for a feeding and diaper change until early in the morning. “This is real progress,” says Pete. “I wonder if this will become a trend or it was just lucky.” Sylvia smiles and tells him to get to work.

Sam attended a briefing of the company's NCOs and they were told that work on the airfield would continue to be the priority over defensive positions. Once the airstrip becomes able to handle more planes the emphasis will be switched. The good news is that a Marine Defense Battalion will be transferred to their little rock “sometime in the future.”

Combat

The SS Jack, 16 miles NE of Songkhia, found a lone AP and hit it with a torpedo which did heavy damage and caused fires. Troops were seen jumping overboard.

SS Sea Rover, 9 miles off of Muntok, struck a TK with a torpedo and the 2 DDs, 3 PGs and 3 PCs pounced on her. The sub endured a prolonged and accurate depth charge attack. She has light systems damage and since her mines have been laid she'll head back home as planned. She discovers that there are other APs around too.

Ichang was under an air umbrella of 15 X Jack, 4 X Nick and 19 X Tony when out of the sun dove 47 X P-38J. It was a Lightning quick (pun intended) slashing attack that saw 7 Jacks shot down (1 damaged), 2 Nicks killed and 9 Tonys downed (1 damaged). 3 P-38Js were lost and 3 more were limping home.

Bangkok was being protected by a CAP of 44 X Zeke, 17 X George, 10 X Jack and 25 X Frank who challenged the 44 X P-38J who swept into their airspace. 20 Zekes were downed (1 damaged), 6 Georges were killed (2 damaged), 2 Jacks went down and 14 Franks will never fly again at the cost of 11 Lightnings shot down and 3 more damaged.

Krung Thep was bombed by 31 X B-29 (2 damaged), 28 X B-24J and 14 X P-38J. The airfield took heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions and moderate casualties. Another strike of 41 X B-29 followed and added moderate damage to the field, a few more secondary explosions and light personnel losses. Allied troops had extremely light losses from an artillery attack while the Allied guns supported an assault that gained no ground. The Japanese had extremely heavy losses and Allied casualties were heavy.

The 90th Naval Guard Unit, on Palau, was hit by 5 X P-39D, 32 X P-38G and 3 X P-47D for light casualties.
Then the 2nd Amphibious Brigade was next as 11 X P-39D and 6 X P-47D came on, but missed their target.

The IJA 36th Ind. Mixed Brigade, at Tavoy, was hit by 101 X Liberator VI (5 damaged), 42 X B-25J (1 destroyed), 48 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged) and 24 X Thunderbolt II. The unit had very heavy casualties. Allied artillery caused very heavy casualties today for the Japanese.

Ed's Old Gals have topped off their oil bunkers and magazines and prepare to depart to inflict more pain on Palau. Ed is making his flag on the BB Tennessee for this trip. His orders remain the same, “Give 'em hell.”

The invasion force is almost ready to depart Townsville for Port Moresby as the last of the supplies and troops are being loaded.

The following is a text written by Elanor Roosevelt for today.

HYDE PARK, Monday—This column will come out on the Fourth of July. That day was devoted to the setting off of firecrackers in my childhood. We started by putting the biggest bunch we were allowed to have under a tin can, lighting the fuse, and waiting with baited breath until the big noise would shatter the peace of the summer morning and awaken my grandmother. We saved our pocket money for weeks beforehand, and begged all we could from our elders, but at best our firecrackers never lasted beyond breakfast time.
The day was a joy to us and a discomfort to our elders, but it was the dogs who suffered most. They crawled under the beds and sofas and stayed there until our supply of firecrackers was exhausted. When evening came our elders set off some firecrackers for us, and we were allowed to hold the Roman candles, which we did with considerable trepidation. That was the climax of a perfect day.
In those days I am afraid I thought very little about why we celebrated this day, but today when firecrackers are out of the question, children and their elders are much more apt to think of the real things which make July 4 an important date to all of us.
The fathers of our country were young men when they wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence—it was a young man's document and it expressed the faith and hope and ideals of youth. Ex-President Hoover, in his speech the other night, said that the Republican Party recognized that this was a time when youth would take over. Comparatively few states have made it really easy to be in the armed services, still assurance was given to both the men and the women in the services that they would be consulted and have a voice in our policies for the future. This is in line with our tradition—good, sound, old American doctrine.
People in the older nations of Europe must have laughed at the young upstarts who thought they could put into words anything which would so inspire a people that a new country would be founded and shape its policies in accord with their declaration. The amusement did them no harm, and neither will it hurt the young people of today if they speak out their convictions and write from their hearts.
Many of the things which were said in the original declaration I think the youth of today will reaffirm. It would be hard to improve on: "We hold these truths to be self-evident. That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." These are brave words, and the men who wrote them meant them, for they ended thus; "And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor." That is what the youth of today is carrying out. God grant their elders help them.

Japanese ships encountered a mine field at Palembang.

Ed's Old Gals unloaded on Palau and dished out moderate damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, a large number of secondary explosions were seen and extremely heavy casualties were inflicted on the troops. The 2nd Amphibious Brigade was hit for very light losses by 4 X P-39D, 33 X P-38G (1 damaged) and 3 X P-47D. Then 12 X PB4Y, 12 X SB2C, 32 X TBF, 12 X P-47D and 13 X F6F did light damage to the port a caused a secondary explosion.

Phil's arm continues to be a problem. “I'll just need to be better with the arm that works,” Phil told a doctor at an examination. In the meantime he's been granted leave and he now has a month to kill. He thinks of his options and decides that he's never seen the Rocky mountains except from a train or plane so that's where he's heading.

Slim is nursing a hangover from having enjoyed the 4th of July celebration a bit to much. Gunny assures him that he didn't make a complete ass out of himself. “You were plastered and only acted half assed,” Gunny said.

While launching a Seagull today the plane burst into flames and crashed into the water. Quick thinking saved the pilot and he was fished out of the water by a DD and returned to the Helena. Bill wants to know what happened and the best answer he can get is a shrug. Nobody knows what happened and they can only guess. “OK, at least our pilot is OK,” says Bill. Meanwhile his nerves are taut from constantly cruising the waters off of Tori Shima, just waiting for the IJN to appear.

U-boats sank 4 small warships and damaged the cruiser Dragon off of Normandy.

Combat

Ichang was attacked by 71 X B-25J and 29 X P-40N. 2 Nicks and 7 Tonys were able to intercept with a Tony going down (5 damaged) and a Nick trashed. A Mitchell was shot down (33 damaged) and a Warhawk was destroyed. The flak was heavy and accurate but the airfield took moderate damage, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were moderate.

Krung Thep was raided by 40 X B-24J and 1 was damaged by the 52 X Zeke, 22 X George, 10 X Jack, 5 X Irving and 22 X Frank (4 damaged) that half heatedly attacked them. The bombs fell harmlessly as the cloud cover obscured the target area. Japanese artillery caused moderately light Allied losses.

Songkhia's port took moderately heavy damage from 24 X B-29 who also caused many secondary explosions. Another 31 X B-29 also attacked the port adding light damage and many secondary explosions.

Koepang was struck by 33 X B-24D and 42 X P-38J. AA fire damaged 6 of the bombers as they caused heavy damage to the airstrip, a secondary explosion and light personnel losses.

Palau had it's port lightly damaged, the airfield heavily so, there were a few secondary explosions and light casualties as the 77 X B-24J unloaded. Then it was the 2nd Amphibious Brigade's turn to play target for 14 X P-39D, 32 X P-38G and 10 X P-47D who inflicted moderate losses on the unit. In the afternoon 9 X PB4Y, 12 X SB2C, 28 X TBF and 14 X P-47D did light damage to the port.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had light losses from the 12 Helens that dumped on it.

Tavoy's Japanese defenders had heavy casualties due to the Allied artillery. Fire.

Phil posts a letter addressed to the Bureau of Naval Personnel. He hopes that the request doesn't fall on deaf ears as he returns to the BOQ to gather his stuff and head out on his liberty.

More men and material flow to the Marianas as ships assemble for the soon to be launched offensive. Slim marvels at how the island doesn't sink. Scuttlebutt has the 2nd Marine Division about to embark and head for Rabaul. Of course another version says Truk. Either one would be a bloody affair that Slim would rather do without.

Churchill said that there were the following numbers concerning the “Doodlebugs.” 2754 were launched, 2752 have been killed in the attacks and 8000 have been injured to date.

Combat

Once again Ed's Old Gals conducted a naval bombardment of Palau and caused light damage to the port, moderate damage to the airfield, there were many supply hits and troop losses were very heavy. The 2nd Amphibious Brigade was pounded by 12 X PB4Y, 6 X SB2C, 14 X P-39D, 33 X P-38G and 12 X P-47D. The unit had moderately light casualties.

Ichang was bombed by 48 X B-25J and 45 X P-40N. 2 X Nick and 5 X Tony challenged the raid and between the fighters and the AA fire a Mitchell went down (28 damaged) and 2 P-40N were destroyed (3 damaged). The bombs and fighters killed 3 Nicks, 3 Tonys and a Dinah. The airfield was lightly damaged and there were a couple of secondary explosions reported.

Victoria Point was swept by 36 X P-38J and 19 X Zeke put up a fight. 13 Zekes went down at the cost of a destroyed Lightning.

Bangkok was swept by 52 X P-38J and 60 X Zeke, 29 X George, 9 X Jack and 21 X Frank put up a fight. The Japanese lost 23 Zekes (1 damaged), 18 Georges, 5 Jacks and 14 Franks while 9 Lightnings were lost and 7 more took damage.

Krung Thep was under a CAP of 4 X Irving and another 2 joined them in time to all be destroyed by the marauding 48 X Thunderbolt II that then departed unharmed. The Allies had light casualties due to Japanese artillery.

Lautem was attacked by 138 X B-25J and 24 X Kittyhawk III. 3 Mitchells were damaged by flak as they caused moderately heavy damage to the airfield, there were a couple of secondary explosions and heavy casualties.

Port Moresby was bombed by 12 X B-17E and a solitary bomb hit the runway.

Lunga was struck by 42 X B-24D for moderate airfield damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and the troops had moderate losses.

The IJA 30th Division, at Tavoy was jumped by 85 X Liberator VI (9 damaged), 48 X B-25J (2 damaged), 42 X Mosquito FB.VI and 11 X Thunderbolt II. The unit took very heavy losses. The IJA 128th Ind. Mixed Brigade was targeted by 26 X Liberator VI (4 damaged), 16 X B-25J (5 damaged), 6 X Mosquito FB.VI and 2 X Thunderbolt II. Heavy casualties were reported. The 16th Chindit Brigade was bombed by 20 X Frances (4 damaged) and the unit had moderately heavy losses. Allied gunner caused moderate Japanese losses.

Sam was told by a battalion clerk that the scuttlebutt is true, a Marine Defense Battalion is scheduled to arrive by mid September. He's glad to hear this as some of the Sea Bees told him that construction of the island's defenses would resume late in that same month. Now if the Japanese just stay away for now. What he doesn't know is that the USN is maintaining a strong force in the area and the lone vessels that cruise by are busily laying vast mine fields.

Stick spotted a Japanese recon plane today and gave chase. A game of hide and seek followed as the Japanese plane flitted among the clouds always managing to stay out of his grasp. When he returned to base and related his tale at the debriefing the other pilots somberly expressed their condolences that his first kill still manages to allude him.

Bill finishes a letter to Sandy and puts it on the pile. He then heads for the bridge. There's really no need for him there, but he can't sleep and there's nothing else for him to do. Once there the men are told to carry on. Nothing is happening and the ships are headed towards Iwo to refuel.

Pete is enjoying some tea and JD (John Doe) comes into the pub, takes a seat and asks for a beer. The men converse and JD asks if Pete needs anything. Pete smiles and says, “A new arm would be good, but seriously I'm doing good. Life is a strange thing. Look at me now and take a year or so back, what a difference.” JD smiles and nods.

Combat

Once again Nanning is swept by 41 X P-38J and they tear into 10 X Zeke and 2 X Tony downing 8 of the Zekes and a Tony while losing 1 plane and having another damaged.

Victoria Point had a CAP of 14 Zekes up and they ran when 32 X P-38J appeared. 2 of the Zekes were destroyed.

Bangkok underwent a fighter sweep made up of 42 X P-38J and a melee ensued when 40 Zekes, 15 Georges, 8 Jacks and 8 Franks gave battle. 22 Zekes, 7 Georges, 2 Jacks and 6 Franks were shot down at the cost of 10 Lightnings destroyed and another damaged.

Krung Thep was swept by 48 X Thunderbolt II, but there were no Japanese planes around. While the Jugs were cruising 39 X B-29 dumped their bombs on the airfield doing light damage, causing many secondary explosions and inflicting light casualties. The Japanese artillery did no damage today, though they tried.

Dili was attacked by 35 X B-24J and 37 X P-38J. The port was lightly damaged, there were a few secondary explosions and light personnel losses.

Port Moresby had it's airfield hit by 20 X B-24D for moderately light damage, a couple of secondary explosions and moderate losses. The 5th Engineer Regiment was jumped by 12 X A-20G, but had no casualties.

At Tavoy the IJA 49th Division was pounced on by 51 X Liberator VI (3 damaged), 60 X B-25J (1 downed, 1 damaged), 42 X Mosquito FB.VI and 10 X Thunderbolt II and as a result had very heavy casualties. Then the IJA 128th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit by 55 X Liberator VI (4 damaged), 6 X Mosquito FB.VI and 15 X Thunderbolt II for very heavy losses. Allied artillery caused very heavy Japanese losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had moderate losses when 9 X Helen attacked.

A pair of refitted CVs departed San Francisco this morning and then their planes flew out to join them. Chris Fenton enjoyed his liberty and is eager to up his kill count. He says that he's just doing his bit to send the Japs back to where they came from so he can go home.

A quick resupplying and the reduced TF is on it's way back towards Tori Shima. The Helena got 3 new planes and 2 new pilots to replace her losses and worn out equipment. Bill was pleased with the speed of the operation, but he's concerned that they sailed without 2 BBs and a CA. The DDs were rotated out and replaced with fresh ships. He wonders where the O'Bannon is and how Phil is doing.

Frank watches his ship being rebuilt and wonders if she'll be done on schedule. He had made a promise to Bill that he would visit with Sandy and Dave so he plans to leave tomorrow. With luck he'll arrive on Monday.

Gunny tells Slim to have his boys ready as something is in the wind and it's blowing their way.

Sam eyes yet another Japanese snooper and wishes he could do something about it. This is eating him up and all he can do is watch.

Gene hasn't seen or heard anything, but he's discovered that the time spent in the bar for a beer or two really helps him to relax after work. He arrives home a bit later, but he's not wound up and can actually enjoy his shower and meal.

Combat

The SS Pilotfish, near Merak, was hunted by 5 DDs who dropped DCs, but failed to come close enough to do any damage. Later in the day 4 X DD had better luck and pounded her.

Again Ed's Old Gals dished it out to the defenders of Palau. The port was moderately damaged as was the airfield, there were many secondary explosions and very heavy casualties to the troops. Then 13 X TBF and 6 X P-47D attacked the troops, but failed to do any harm.

Nanning was under a CAP of 4 X Zeke and a Tony when 37 X P-38J jumped them. 2 Zekes ran and the rest of the Japanese planes fell out of the sky.

Bangkok was being protected by 26 X Zeke, 16 X George, 9 X Jack and 8 X Frank when 32 X P-38J dove through the loose Japanese formations shredding them. 9 Zekes were shot down (1 damaged), 10 Georges were destroyed, 3 Jacks got trashed (1 damaged) and 5 of the Franks went down. 6 P-38Js were destroyed and 3 got damaged.

Krung Thep was swept by 48 X Thunderbolt II, but they had the sky to themselves. While the planes of the sweep loitered a raid of 34 X B-29 and 9 X P-38J attacked the airfield and scored light damage, many secondary explosions and caused moderate casualties. Japanese artillery failed to do any damage today.

Kai Island's airfield was clobbered by 140 X B-25J and 24 X Kittyhawk III for heavy damage, and a few secondary explosions.

Koepang was bombed by 31 X B-24J (9 damaged) and the port took moderate damage and some secondary explosions.

Dili's port was lightly hit by 31 X B-24D. There were some secondary explosions and very light personnel losses.

Port Moresby had it's airfield attacked by 48 X B-24J who did moderately heavy damage to it, caused a couple of secondary explosions and there were moderate casualties.

The Japanese ships about 27 miles S of Shimizu were attacked by 13 X PB4Y (2 damaged). An MSW took 2 bomb hits, but the APs escaped without harm.

Kwajalein was raided by 37 X PB4Y and 3 X P-47D. The flak damaged a couple of the bombers and the airstrip was lightly damaged. There were many secondary explosions and light troop losses.

Tavoy's IJA defenders absorbed heavy losses from the Allied artillery bombardment.

Bill checks with his radar officer and is assured that the malfunction will be repaired very soon. His anxiety level went up a few notches when this “little” problem was reported to him. He knows that there are other ships scanning the skies and seas for the enemy, but he wants his “eyes” working too. He hates operating this close to Japan without the bulk of the fleet here with him.

Frank thanks the man for the lift and walks into the garage to hear somebody cursing a blue streak at these old crates, no parts and the damned war. “Hi,” Franks says loud enough to be heard. The cursing stops and Frank continues with, “Are you Dave? Sandy's father? I'm Frank, a friend of Bill's. Maybe he wrote to you mentioning me?” Dave is now out from under the old heap and wiping off his hands on a dirty rag. He offers the greasy hand and Frank takes it as the shake. Dave apologized for the grease and he's told, “No problem.” They talk as they head to the house. Sandy is sitting on the porch rereading one of Bill's letters when she notices Dave approaching with another man in a Navy uniform.. It's not Bill and a chill runs through her as she thinks the unthinkable, which she sweeps away. She gets up and greets them as Dave makes introductions. Sandy invites Frank in and offers him something to eat and drink, which he eagerly accepts. They talk for hours and Sandy can't thank him enough for taking his precious time to visit with them. She's overjoyed to know that as far as Frank knows Bill is just fine and he is in command of a cruiser serving in the Western Pacific. They insist that Frank not only will share dinner with them, but that he's welcome to stay as long as he'd like. Frank thanks them and explains that he has to return to his lady, the O'Bannon and oversee her work. “Ill have to leave tomorrow, though I'd love to stay. Sorry.”

Combat

The SS Triton, 83 miles S of Shimizu, tried but failed to attack a pair of APs being escorted by 2 MSWs.

The SS Sculpin, 28 miles N of Etorofo Jima, was attacked by 5 DDs who never had her location pegged.

Ichang was swept by 40 X P-38J and 2 Nicks and 8 Tony were their targets. A Nick was nailed and 4 Tonys torched at the cost of a Lightning and another damaged.

Bangkok was swept by 48 X Thunderbolt II and 29 X P-38J who were opposed by 23 X Zeke, 10 X George, 4 X Jack and 5 X Frank. 22 Zekes, 8 Georges, a Jack and 5 Franks went down before the blazing guns of the Allied fighters while 4 Thunderbolts were destroyed and 4 more took damage.

Krung Thep was attacked by 34 X B-29 (2 damaged), 48 X B-24J (1 downed, 1 damaged) and 6 X P-38J. The airfield was very heavily damaged, a great number of secondary explosions were observed and very heavy casualties were reported. Another attack was made by 117 X B-29 and 9 X Spitfire VIII. They added very heavy damage to the airfield, a great many more secondary explosions and moderate personnel losses. The Allied forces had very light losses due to the Japanese artillery. An Allied assault gained a little ground and both sides had extremely heavy losses.

Dili was bombed by 40 X B-24J and the port was lightly damaged, but there were many secondary explosions.

Port Moresby was visited by 48 X B-17E who caused light damage to the port, a secondary explosion and light casualties. The 1st Engineer Regiment was hit by 12 X A-20G for light losses.

Lunga was hit by 51 X B-24J for moderate damage to the airfield and some secondary explosions.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 9 Helens for very light losses.

The Japanese ships about 177 miles NE of Tori Shima were attacked by 1 X SBD, 1 X SB2C, 8 X TBF, 3 X TBM and 14 X F6F. There were no Allied losses and an AP was hit by a torpedo. Troops were seen going into the water. Then 3 X SBD, 1 X TBM and F6F Hellcat hit 2 APs with a bomb each and more soldiers went into the water. Still not done 33 X PB4Y and 33 X P-38J got in on the act. A Liberator went down and another took damage as they added the following misery for the Japanese.

Once more there were reports of Japanese troops jumping into the water.

Palau was struck by 73 X TBF, 17 X P-47D, 62 X F4F-4, 41 X FM-2, 70 X F6F. The port took light damage, there were a few secondary explosions and extremely light casualties.

Allied artillery at Tavoy caused heavy Japanese losses.

The invasion force for Palau will be formed up and ready to hit the target on the 12th.

To sit and watch other troops involved in an offensive is not sitting well with the 2nd Marines. Gunny knows that their time will come, but when? The lad's morale is suffering from nothing to do. He speaks with Slim and the feelings are echoed. “I thought something was up and then poof, nothing. We get to watch others move out and we just rot here,” says Slim.

Gene is numb. He's working 6 days a week and pulling double shifts 3 or 4 times a week, depending on the need for welding which always seems to be in demand. He heads home without ever giving a thought to the bar where a certain man is hanging around.

As the train rolls on Frank thinks about how lucky Bill is to have a girl like Sandy waiting for him.

Once again Ed's Old Gal unloaded on Palau doing moderate damage to the airfield and port, causing some secondary explosions and inflicting extremely heavy casualties. The 2nd Amphibious Brigade had very light casualties from 30 X SB2C and 41 X F6F. The the unit was hit again by, 12 X PB4Y,9 X SB2C, 17 X P-39D, 13 X P-47D, 27 X F4F-4, 6 X FM-2 and 18 X F6F. Again the unit had very light losses. Still not done the 2nd was hit by 53 X B-24J for moderate losses. Later 45 X TBF and 30 X F6F attacked the island’s defenses, but did no damage. There were a couple of secondary explosions as a result of 24 X TBF, 9 X F4U-1D, 11 X P-47D, 39 X F4F-4, 50 X FM-2 and 15 X F6F in the late afternoon.

The SS Stingray, near Wetar Island, was pounded by 4 DDs. She reported in with moderate damage and flooding and will make for Darwin.

The SS Greenling, 77 miles S of Kagoshima, was attacked by 2 PGs and a PC. She easily evaded her attackers and later tried to attack an AK, but failed.

The 1st Engineer Regiment at Port Moresby was jumped by 6 X A-20G and the unit had light losses.

The Japanese ships about 67 miles S of Matsuyama were attacked by 6 X PB4Y (1 damaged). The 2 APs escaped being hit.

The SS Sailfish, 140 miles S of Kendari, attacked an extremely heavily escorted AP. The target was hit by w torpedoes and troops were jumping into the water praying for rescue. Then the escorts attacked the sub, but she escaped unharmed.

The Japanese artillery at Krung Thep caused moderate Allied casualties and the Allies assaulted the Japanese positions, destroying the defensive works while gaining some ground. Both sides sustained extremely heavy losses.

The ground at Tavoy shook from an Allied artillery bombardment that inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Tomorrow at dawn Palau will be invaded by the 40th Division, 111 RCT, 1 Marine Armored Bn and directed by the V Amphib Corps. There are doubts about this force being strong enough to do the job.

“At least the adjacent area is open and we can spread out a bit when we want to stretch,” says Slim to Gunny. Gunny is lost in thought about the force that left Ulithi bound for some island. A doggy division and a RCT, not what he'd expect. He thinks that a single Marine division would've been a better choice. At least some Marines went with the doggies. He comes back to reality and tells Slim to have his boys saddle up for a trip to the target range. The entire company will be going and they will get times by platoon with heavy weapons off by themselves.

Stalin holds a meeting and tells his assembled generals that he desires that the Germans be crushed by the planned summer offensive. He states that he doesn't want to be bothered with POWs, just dead Germans. Some of the generals looks at one another, but say nothing.

The US government formally recognized the provisional French government of de Galle as the defacto French government.

The Red Army took 35000 POWs today.

Combat

The DD Roebuck hit a mine at Tavoy. The area was swept and no mines had been discovered. The RN's naval bombardment caused heavy losses for the Japanese.

The SS Peto, 81 miles S of Kendari, hit an AP with 2 fish and troops were doing their best to escape the flames.

The SS Harder, near Paramushiro Jima, hit an AK with a torpedo. The Japanese ships were being protected by 26 X Zeke when 3 X PB4Y and 2 X P-47D appeared. A Zeke was flamed and 2 others took damage as all of the Liberators were damaged and a Jug went down. No ships were harmed. Another strike of 31 X PB4Y (1 damaged), 14 X TBM (3 damaged), 76 X P-47D (2 downed, 3 damaged) and 9 X FM-2 (5 downed) fought the 25 Zekes and the Japanese lost 8 fighters and had 2 others take damage. The Japanese ships took the following:

The invasion of Palau has commenced on schedule. The Japanese fired on the invasion force and inflicted extremely heavy losses and hit an LCI many times. The DD Dale was hit once. 36 X P-38G were on patrol overhead. The 90th Naval Guard Unit was attacked by 6 X PB4Y,3 X SB2C, 6 X P-39D, 4 X P-47D, 6 X F4F-4 and 5 X F6F. The unit had light casualties. Then the 2nd Amphibious Brigade was targeted by 30 X SB2C and 32 X F6F for moderate losses. The 2nd was hit again by 6 X PB4Y, 6 X SB2C, 11 X P-39D, 7 X P-47D and 10 X F6F for light losses. Then the 2nd Amphibious Brigade was pounced on by 56 X B-24J who caused moderately heavy casualties. Another raid by 45 X TBF and 40 X F6F caused light damage to the port, a secondary explosion and extremely light casualties. The Allies still weren't done with their pounding of the island as 24 X TBF, 11 X P-47D, 9 X F4U-1D, 34 X F4F-4, 51 X FM-2 and 12 X F6F added light damage to the port. The Allied troops launched their assault and swept through the defenses taking very heavy losses. The Japanese lost heavily, but the base was taken as the port and airfield are now in American hands.

The SS Pintado, 19 miles W of the Amami Group, tried to get an attack in on a pair of MLs, but couldn't. Later, by sheer determination the sub got off an attack and hit 1 of the MLs with a fish.

The SS Lancetfish, 11 miles NW of Sakashima, failed in her attempt to attack 5 X DD.

Bangkok was swept by 28 X P-38J and they mixed it up with 18 X Zeke, 9 X George, 8 X Jack and 4 X Frank. 2 Zekes, 6 Georges, a Jack and 3 Franks were destroyed at the cost of 6 planes lost and another damaged.

Krung Thep was bombed by 124 X B-29 and the airfield was heavily damaged, there were a great many secondary explosions and casualties were very heavy. Allied troops had very light casualties from an artillery barrage,

Lunga was raided by 54 X B-24J and the airfield had heavy damage, a secondary explosion was seen and there were light losses.

Tavoy's defenders had heavy losses from the Allied artillery.

The Lucky 11 are issued Arctic gear and they unhappily face the prospects of flying out of some base in Alaska. “I hate winter and they want to send me where I can freeze to death,” Landy complains. He's told to be quiet and to move along. With the crew gathered they discuss their prospects and there isn't a happy man among them.

Slim stands over the newest men in the unit and tells them to do it again. “If you can't change the barrel faster than that you'll be dead. Now I want you to keep doing it until you can do it blindfolded in the time I've allowed,” says Slim. When a couple of the guys grumble he says, “Imagine that there are explosions all around you, bullets are ripping through the air all over the place and the only light is from a flare drifting down in the distance. Now get your backs into it. Oh, one more thing I want you wearing those gloves because the weapons are going to be hot enough to burn you.” With that he walks over to a tree and sits down, leaning against it as he watches the inept slowly getting better.

Stick sits on his cot in a state of awe. “There were explosions all over the place and our troops were pouring ashore. I don't see how a single Jap could still be alive,” he says. Some of the other pilots agree, but one of them mentions that they were in the air, nice and safe, “With a ringside view.”

Combat

The SS Ling, 21 miles SE of Kendari, detected 4 DDs approaching her position and she dove deep to avoid their intended attack. Her skipper was more than pleased with his radar today.

The SS Harder, 19 miles S of Paramushiro Jima, spotted and tracked a DD which waltzed into a spread of 4 torpedoes and each one found and detonated against her starboard side. The DD was gone in the blink of an eye and the Harder's skipper said, “Good shooting gentleman.”

Bangkok still insists on throwing whatever aircraft and pilots that can be mustered into the air to contest the Allied fighter sweeps. Today 23 X Zeke, 8 X George, 9 X Jack and 5 X Frank opposed 48 X P-38J. 12 Zekes, 4 Georges, 2 Jacks and 4 Franks will never return to base. 7 Lightnings were shot down and 4 others took some damage in the lopsided fight.

The 4th Tank Regiment at Port Moresby was attacked by 9 A-20G. Casualties were light.

On Palau the 2nd Amphibious Brigade was jumped by 30 X SB2C and 24 X F6F and as a result had very light losses. Counter battery fire caused light Japanese losses.

Paramushiro Jima was swept by 57 X P-47D and 9 Zekes had the misfortune to get in their way. All of the Zekes were disposed of at no cost to the Jugs. Then, with the way cleared the Japanese ships were attacked by 23 X PB4Yand 1 DD was struck by 7 bombs and another by 4. Both were heavily damaged and burning.

The SS Croaker, near Naha, hit an ML with 3 torpedoes causing a massive explosion and disintegration of the vessel.

Krung Thep was the scene of another Japanese artillery attack that caused light Allied casualties.

Moderate Japanese losses at Tavoy were the result of the Allied artillery barrage.

Tokyo protested to Moscow over the 2 days of attacks on their ships staged out of Petropavlask. Stalin looks at the paper and snorts, “Tell them that they attacked American vessels trying to resupply our troops there and that now they complain with the tables turned. If I throw my Allies out of the base in question then I risk loosing supplies and material that the Americans give to the USSR in our Great Patriotic War against the Germans. I will not risk this. I they want an excuse to go to war with us over this then they should be careful of what they wish for. I will not be told by Tokyo what we can and can not do with our bases. Put our forces on full war footing and if 1 shot is fired by the Japanese then it is war.”

The Lucky 11 departed Mather Field bound for Hawaii. They happily discarded the arctic gear that they were issued and a truck took it back to the warehouse. The Army Air Corps, in it's infinite wisdom, used the gear as a way of misdirecting any possible spies. “The sun, the beach, the women,” exclaims Donny, the Central Fire Control Gunner. Gel pokes Gil in the ribs and mutters that Donny thinks of himself as a real swordsman.

The 2nd Marine Division continues to sit awaiting orders that never seem to come. Gunny is very concerned about morale. Slim is very concerned that his lads are happy to sit out the war.

Vilna fell to the Russians today.

A Ju88 with SN-2 radar landed in Suffolk by mistake.

Combat

The SS Hardhead, 19 miles NE of the Amami Group, spotted an AK, an AP and MSW. She tried and failed to get into an attack position.

The SS Ling, 22 miles SE of Kendari, spotted 4 DDs with her radar. They were closing at high speed, but the sub went under and evaded her would be attackers. The DDs tracked her down in the afternoon, but failed to do any damage.

The SS Haddock, 27 miles NW of Manila, was pinned and pounded by 4 X PC. Her hull ruptured and she has been lost with all hands forever on patrol.

Port Moresby's Japanese defenders poured everything they had at the Allied troops landing and inflicted extremely heavy casualties. The DD Voyager was hit once. 48 X B-17E, 47 X B-24D and 48 X B-24J attacked doing heavy damage to the airfield and port, there were many secondary explosions claimed and moderate personnel casualties. Then 56 X SB2C and 14 X F6F struck the port doing light damage, triggered a single secondary explosion and caused light losses. Japanese artillery was suppressed by Allied guns and the Japanese had light losses.

The SS Scamp, 13 miles E of Batan Island, attacked an AK being escorted by 4 X PC. 2 torpedoes hit the target, exploded and caused heavy damage and fires.

Tavoy was bombed by 122 X Liberator VI (7 damaged), 47 X B-24J (1 damaged), 16 X P-38J, 51 X Thunderbolt II, 13 X Corsair IV and 13 X Spitfire VIII. The airfield was subjected to extremely heavy damage, a great many secondary explosions were reported and there were very heavy casualties. The IJA 31st Division was jumped by 16 X B-25J (1 damaged), 9 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged) and 6 X P-38J who inflicted heavy causalities. Then the IJA 45th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit by 24 X B-25J (3 damaged), 34 X Mosquito FB.VI, 5 X Thunderbolt II and 9 X Spitfire VIII for very heavy losses. An Allied assault caused both sides to suffer extremely heavy losses. No ground was gained and the fortifications seem to have been reinforced.

Krung Thep was raided by 36 X B-29 who caused moderate damage to the airstrip, many secondary explosions and heavy personnel losses. Allied casualties were light today due to the Japanese artillery. The Japanese suffered very heavily at the hands of the Allied artillery.

Koepang was hit by 31 X B-24J and 14 were damaged by the heavy and accurate AA fire. The port took light damage , some secondary explosions were observed and troop losses were light. Then 42 X B-24J attacked the airfield doing light damage, causing many secondary explosions and there were light casualties. A Liberator was shot down and 11 more were damaged by the flak.

Lautem was pounded by 113 X B-25J and 24 X Kittyhawk III. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were a great many secondary explosions and the troops had moderate losses.

Lunga was paid a visit by 42 X B-24D and the airfield had moderate damage, a couple of secondary explosions were reported and there were very light troop losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 8 X Helen and the Chinese had light casualties.

Bangkok had 16 X Zeke, 8 X George, 10 X Jack and 3 X Frank up when they were bounced by 31 X P-38J. 8 Zekes, 6 Georges, a Jack and 3 Franks were downed and a lone Lightning was destroyed.

Paramushiro Jima was under a CAP of 19 X Zeke and they were jumped by 56 X P-47D. 18 of the Zekes were killed and all of the Jugs departed unscathed.

The ML Monadnock, about 306 miles SE of Guam, was attacked by a sub. She managed to escape harm though.

Palau witnessed the Japanese artillery accomplish nothing except draw the wrath of the Allied gunners down on them for light losses.

Churchill has sent a note to FDR and in it he stated that Burma had degenerated into a stalemate. The Allied troops, for all of their brave efforts and sacrifice can't breach the lines at Tavoy. Krung Thep will have to become the main focus of the offensive.

Moscow has the response from Tokyo and Stalin smiles an evil smile as he says, “See, they are afraid of us even though they know that a war will be fought with us sooner or later.” With that he directs a note to be sent to FDR demanding more aid and an accelerated timetable for the joint attack on the Japanese.

After a long and tiring flight the Lucky 11 land at Wheeler Field. “Imagine doing that in a B-17 or 24,” says Gil. He's pooped because it was his job to make sure that they rode the beam into Pearl. Willy did his job well as his navigation had them right on target, which was pretty good. Now they'll get some rest and the plane will be serviced. Gil wants to hit the beach and after some showers, hot chow and sleep that will be one of the things they'll do.

Gene wonders if he wouldn't be better off working in some other line of work. He tells his uncle that this week he put in “Over 70 damned hours. Working like this is going to get us crippled or killed. We get to work tired and leave exhausted. Today I thought the whole world was moving in front of me. I swear I had all I could do to keep the welds straight. There's no let up in the amount of work and as long as this war drags on we're prisoners to the yard.” One of the guys says that the boy has a good point. He elaborates by saying that his wife feels neglected and he's to tired to do anything about it. Of course this draws laughter and there are a couple of volunteers to help out on the home front. Gene finishes with, “At least tomorrow is Sunday, my only day off. I'm so beat all I do is eat and sleep.”

Combat

A B-25J spotted and attacked a sub 17 miles E of Saipan. A hit was claimed and later a PBM spotted a sub in the area that seemed to be leaking oil. Many other planes on patrol in the area claimed to have attacked this sub.

Troops continue landing at Port Moresby and they take very heavy losses from the Japanese artillery, mortars, machine guns and small arms fire. The invasion force was attacked by 22 Kates and 10 Sallys. A LRCAP of 35 Hellcats tore into them and downed 15 Kates and 9 Sallys while 4 fighters took some damage. The AK Bordvik was hit by a bomb and was burning. Another raid consisting of 11 X Kate tried to penetrate the shield of 34 X F6F and all were killed for their efforts. A short time later 51 X SB2C and 12 X F6F did light damage to the port, triggered a few secondary explosions and inflicted moderate personnel losses. Allied artillery inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese troops.

The SS Ling, 27 miles SE of Kendari, found 5 X APD and managed to hit 1 with a torpedo, doing heavy damage and causing fires to break out.

The SS Peto, 184 miles N of Dili, came across an APD and hit it with 3 torpedoes, sinking it. Another APD tried to attack the sub a short time later, but failed to get an exact fix on her.

The SS Pintado, 201 miles W of Nagasaki, failed to get an attack in on a pair of MSWs escorting an AK.

Ichang was swept by 32 X P-38J and a Nick and 7 Tonys were aloft. 2 P-38Js went down in the fight as the Nick was damaged and 6 of the Tonys were destroyed.

Victoria Point had 17 X Zeke up when 32 X P-38J came a calling. 14 Zekes were trashed and a Lightning was shot down.

Bangkok had 24 X Zeke, 12 X George, 18 X Jack and 6 X Frank try to fight off 48 X P-38J. 18 Zekes, 9 Georges, 4 Jacks (1 damaged) and 3 Franks were disposed of and 4 P-38Js went down while another 3 were damaged.

Krung Thep underwent a brutal bombing by 126 X B-29. Flak managed to damage 1 plane. The damage to the airfield was heavy, there were a large number of secondary explosions and ground losses were heavy. Japanese artillery inflicted very light casualties on the Allied troops. The Allied artillery caused very heavy Japanese losses.

Koepang was attacked by 33 X B-24J and the AA damaged 7 of them. The airfield took moderate damage, there were a few secondary explosions and personnel casualties were moderate.

Lautem was raided by 83 X B-25J, 13 X Kittyhawk III and 16 X P-40N. The airfield was subjected to moderate damage and there were light troop losses.

Lunga was bombed by 51 X B-24J who caused moderately light damage to the airfield and light casualties.

On Palau the 90th Naval Guard Unit was jumped by 30 X SB2C and 42 X F6F and the unit had light casualties.
Then the 90th was attended to by 6 X PB4Y, 3 X SB2C, 6 X P-39D, 4 X P-47D, 27 X F4F-4, 3 X FM-2 and 6 X F6F and it luckily sustained only very light losses. The 2nd Amphibious Brigade was then hit by 6 X PB4Y, 6 X SB2C, 11 X P-39D, 9 X P-47D, 13 X F4F-4, 6 X FM-2 and 12 X F6F. Despite both sides best efforts nobody got hurt. The 2nd Amphibious Brigade was the target for 23 X B-24J and it had extremely light losses. An Allied artillery attack resulted in moderate Japanese losses.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was attacked by 8 Helens who failed to hit their starving target.

At Paramushiro Jima 7 Zekes were attacked by 58 X P-47D and all of them were splashed. The Jugs then departed unharmed.

The Japanese TF 143 miles NW of Ketoi Jima was attacked by 26 X PB4Y and a DD was hit by 6 bombs. The ship was heavily damaged and burning as the Liberators departed with 1 of their number trailing smoke. The SS Growler then finished off the stricken vessel with 2 torpedoes.

Tavoy's defenses were pounded by Allied gunners and the Japanese had moderate losses.

The attacks begin tomorrow at Port Moresby and it is expected that the Japanese defenses will crumble before the onslaught.

Bill inwardly is on edge with the constant patrol of the Tori Shima area with a TF of reduced strength. Outwardly he tries to be relaxed and confident so his crew will be more confident. Go figure.” Willy then continues with, “Well at least we get time off for some fun in the sun.” Gil nods and is salivating at the thought of sand between his toes and a dip in the Pacific Ocean. All he's ever been to so far is Cony Island and that is not what he'd consider exotic. He says to the entire crew that maybe they stay here and train for the rest of the war, with any luck.

“It was so nice of Frank to come here and tell us about Bill,” says Sandy to Dave. “He really made me feel better, though I have to admit that getting some letters has helped in that department.” Dave nods, his face buried in the newspaper. He tells Sandy how it looks like the Germans are on the run everywhere and that they are falling apart.

Pete and Sylvia wake up bright and early to find Pearl sound asleep. Sylvia comments about how she looks like a little angel and Pete agrees. The two of them are in great spirits since Pearl started to sleep through the night.

Phil sits in a bar in San Francisco drinking a beer wondering what he should do with his time.

Combat

A PB4Y sighted a Japanese ship 79 miles NW of Etorofo Jima and reported hitting it. Then SS Sculpin hit an AK being escorted by a DD with 3 torpedoes. Later in the day the sub put 2 more fish into the stubborn ship, finally sending it to the bottom.

A PB4Y Liberator attacked a sub 11 miles E of Pagan Island and reported a hit. Later in the day a kill was awarded.

The Allied troops unloading over beach at Port Moresby had moderate casualties. The Allied ships unloading were attacked by 10 X Kate, 3 X Betty and 3 X Sally who wished they had stayed home as the CAP of 33 X Hellcat ripped through them. 2 Kates managed to escape the carnage and 6 F6Fs were damaged. The ships were never in danger. 3 more Sallys tried and failed to pierce the 33 F6Fs that protected the shipping. 2 bombers went down in flames and 3 fighters took some damage, again the ships were safe and sound. At almost the same time 50 X SB2C and 14 X F6F did light damage to the port and inflicted light losses on the personnel. The Allied ground assault swept the Japanese aside and the base is now in Allied hands. The Japanese had extremely heavy losses and the Allies suffered heavily. The Japanese troops retreated towards Buna.

The SS Ling, 21 miles SE of Kendari, attacked 4 PGs and hit 1 of them with a torpedo. The remaining PGs tried to find their attacker, but failed to do so.

Nanning was swept by 24 X P-38J and 8 X Zeke and 4 X Tony tried to fight them off. 5 Zekes and 2 Tonys were destroyed in the uneven contest.

Ichang was attacked by 58 X B-25J and 43 X P-40N. A Nick and a Tony were up, but fled. The AA fire damaged 8 Mitchells. The airfield had moderately light damage, there were a couple of secondary explosions and casualties were light.

Tavoy was bombed by 118 X Liberator VI (5 damaged), 48 X B-24J, 58 X B-25J (3 damaged), 24 X Thunderbolt II and 7 X Spitfire VIII x 7. The airfield took extremely heavy damage, the port was heavily hit, there were a large number of secondary explosions and casualties were very heavy. The IJA 45th Ind. Mixed Brigade was bombed and strafed by 30 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 2 damaged) and 7 X Thunderbolt II for moderate losses. Allied artillery caused heavy Japanese losses.

Krung Thep was attacked by 33 X B-29 and 20 X P-38J. There were 17 X Zeke, 2 X George, 3 X Irving, 21 X Frank and 12 X Randy on hand to intercept the attackers. 4 Zekes were flamed (5 damaged), a George was damaged, 3 Irvings were shot down, 4 Franks were killed (1 damaged) and 4 Randys went down (1 damaged). 2 B-29s were shot down (4 damaged) and 5 Lightnings were killed (1 damaged). The airfield was lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and personnel losses were moderate. Then 119 X B-29 Superfortress came on with no escorts. 13 Zekes (2 destroyed, 9 damaged), 2 Georges (both damaged), an Irving (damaged), 17 Franks (2 downed, 9 damaged) and 8 Randys (1 killed, 2 damaged) attacked. 7 of the Superforts were shot down and 40 took damage. The airstrip was moderately hit and there were moderate casualties. The 3rd Indian Division was attacked by 21 X Frances and 7 X Helen (1 damaged) for very light losses. An ineffectual Japanese artillery bombardment did nothing other than make noise, while on the other hand the Japanese had moderate losses from the Allied barrage.

Koepang was raided by 24 B-24Js and 11 were damaged by the flak as they did light damage to the port and caused very light casualties. Then another 25 X B-24J struck. 6 bombers were damaged by the ground fire and they caused light damage to the airfield, a couple of secondary explosions and moderate losses to the troops.

Lautem was struck by 132 X B-25J, 20 Kittyhawk III and 18 X P-40N. The airfield took heavy damage, a couple of secondary explosions were reported and casualties were placed at light.

Gili Gili was hit by 48 X B-17E (7 damaged), 45 X B-24J (6 damaged) and 45 X P-38J. The airfield took heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions, a Kate was wrecked and casualties were light.

Lunga had light damage to it's airfield done by 39 X B-24J. There were also a few secondary explosions observed.

The 90th Naval Guard Unit at Palau was hit by 30 X SB2C and 32 X F6F for light losses. Then the 2nd Amphibious Brigade was jumped by 24 X B-24J for light casualties. Allied artillery failed to hit anyone.

The Allied TF 23 miles W of Tori Shima was attacked by 20 X Betty and 58 X F6F welcomed them by shooting down 13 Bettys. 4 fighters were damaged in the fight, but no ships were harmed.

The SS Jack, 24 miles E of Johore Bharu, tried to attack 4 PGs and a PC, but never was able to obtain a favorable position to launch from.

The SS Lancetfish, 16 miles N of Taipei, hit an AK with a fish and the 2 MSWs never had a clue where the attack came from.

The SS Stingray made it to Darwin today where repairs will start immediately and then it'll be off to a yard before she fights again.

Stick sits on his bunk thinking about 51 missions and still no kill. He can't imagine going home after the war and having to admit to not having a single Japanese planes go down before his blazing guns.

Bill loves the sight of Hellcats overhead as it makes him feel safe. He expected the Japanese to strike long before this and in greater numbers. He overjoyed with the way things panned out and he wonders if it showed in the letter he wrote to Sandy. Maybe now he can get a little sleep.

The Flying Deuces have been transferred to Palau and Stick eagerly awaits being given the pot, which amounts to $625 as he had the closest date. Now that they have a new home he says that they need a new pool because a new basing has to be in the future.

Red and Cookie are wondering about how much longer this war can go on. They would like nothing more than to seriously get down to business with their land holdings. In the meantime one works a radio set and the other labors away in the galley.

With no activity today Bill has decided to hold no drills tomorrow. He'd like to give the crew a break as they performed well in responding to the klaxon and their stations reported in as ready in near record time.

Lae was raided by 48 X B-24D and the airfield had moderate damage and a secondary explosion was reported.

Lunga was hit by 39 X B-24J who inflicted moderate damage on the airstrip, a secondary explosion and very light casualties.

On Palau the 2nd Amphibious Brigade was jumped by 30 X SB2C and 41 X F6F. The unit had extremely light losses. Then the 2nd Amphibious Brigade was dumped on by 33 X B-24J and there were moderate casualties. Allied artillery caused light Japanese losses.

The Allied ships unloading at Tori Shima were attacked by 4 X Betty and 21 X Oscar. A CAP of 20 X F4U-1, which was augmented by a LRCAP of 27 X P-38J downed a Betty and 18 Oscars. No Allied planes were harmed and no ships were ever in danger. The Allied pilots were surprised to see Oscars. They were pleased and Allied commanders are getting the idea that the Japanese are facing a possible shortage of front line fighter airframes. Could it be that the Burma area is draining the airframe pool and Japan itself doesn't have first rate fighters now?

The Allied TF 32 miles S of Tori Shima was attacked by 11 X Betty and 74 X F6F and 13 X F4U-1 met them. 5 Bettys were downed and another trailed smoke as the survivors ran for home. A Hellcat was damaged. The Japanese never got close enough to threaten the ships.

Sam had a front row seat and watched the air battle rage overhead. “It's the strange at how suddenly it starts and then at how quickly it ends,” he says to the guys in the squad. The watch some parachutes drift down and wonder if they're friend or foe. “Mostly Japs, I'll bet,” Sam says.

Hawaiian life is good, thinks Gil. The first trip to the beach was great and the anticipation of getting into the Pacific Ocean was so good. He's now lounging with a couple of the guys enjoying a beer watching the waves lapping at the shoreline.

Stick can't believe that there are any Japanese left alive on Palau, but the missions keep him busy every day.

Bill knows of the air attacks made by the Japanese against the cargo ships at Tori Shima and of course he witnessed the attack on his TF too. I knew that they'd get aggressive, he thinks. It's OK because as long as there are Hellcats above in substantial numbers he feels secure.

Gene listens to the man who is trying to recruit welders to come and work for the company he represents. It seems to be a sweet deal as the money is good and the hours promise to be shorter than what he's suffering through now. The only problem is that he'd have to leave home. That would mean a place of his own and no meals cooked for him, laundry that nobody would do for him and who would keep the place clean? Nope he's made up his mind that he'll stay put.

Sandy and Dave talk about post war plans and he announces that the garage will become a place to work on cars only. “The darned truck parts are to big and heavy and I'm not getting any younger,” he tells her. “What about you? Do you think that Bill will want to make a life with you? If he stays in the Navy then he'd be gone more than home, you know.” Sandy shrugs and says that he's the one she wants and better to share him with the Navy than not to have him.

The American XIX Corps took St. Lo with 6000 casualties suffered in 1 week.

Operation Goodwood was launched by Montgomery. The Germans halted it by inflicting the loss of 200 tanks and 1500 men. The Germans lost 109 tanks.

Bangkok still insists on throwing whatever will fly at the Allied fighter sweeps. Today 37 X P-38J arrived and were offered a feast of 19 X Zeke, 11 X George, 17 X Frank and 3 X Randy. 4 Zekes, 2 Georges, 13 Franks and 2 Randys were shot down, but 11 Lightnings were destroyed and 3 more were damaged.

Paramushiro Jima was swept by 23 X P-47D, but no Japanese were flying.

Lae was hit by 41 X B-24D and the airstrip took light damage.

Where they are bound remains a mystery to them though. “There are lots of theses ships so I guess it's big,” says one of the new guys.

A relatively quiet day has Bill thinking that maybe the Japanese are rethinking things about the Bonin area. He doesn't mind that things seems more peaceful though. Later he finds out about the attack on the retiring merchant ships by all of 9 planes and how the Corsairs drove them off.

Phil decides against any more of the shore leave crap and heads for Mare Island to see if he knows anybody there that can help him escape this land bound state of limbo.

Gene was 6 hours into his shift when the boss came by and actually apologized to him when he told Gene that he was needed to stay until the job was finished. Gene shrugged and muttered, “OK,” knowing that meant that he'd be here for about 14 hours today. It's only Wednesday and I'm already so beat, he thinks.
