ORIGINAL: Schanilec You could trying napping through to Thursday. ...i postulated for a theory back in my navy days called the "Half Deployment Theorum" (tm)...it basically stated that if I could somehow sleep half the time while underway (difficult to accomplish, BTW, but a worthy goal) I would basically be halving a 6 month deployment into a 3 month deployment... And I would have done it too, if it wasnt for those pesky meddling chiefs. ...perks of a commission......plus our watch rotations were so convoluted (Combat Center), we were generally left alone as long as we showed up for watches on time... Wait...wait....are you telling me that there is a branch of service where they actually let you sleep? Apparently I had picked the wrong one. Officers son, officers. The chiefs want the worker drones, (AKA junior enlisted) to show up to work, so they can "supervise" and "show leadership". The chiefs don't want the officers (especially the junior officers) because that's distracting. JO's always ask "why, why, why???", and the chiefs have to spend an inordiant amount of time making sure they don't touch anything. The chiefs LIKE to supervise, it's babysitting they hate. So if "Ensign Surekill" wants his nap time, and only shows up to sign the paperwork that the chief has generated ("trust me sir") , the chief is exceedingly happy. Senior officers check in occassionally to make sure that the chiefs have things in hand (and are not tormenting the JO's, but babysitting them and answering "why"), then they are off to their offices (or staterooms on "the boat") to deal with massive loads of paperwork. Basically JO's can do anything they like if they stay out of the senior officers and senior enlisteds hair. This is called training the JO's to be "self-reliant". (Or "self-babysitting").
