I think this is a good time to ask this with the new Expansion in development.

Also to gauge what the community thinks about this. I feel that though DW does lot of good things when it comes to ship design, economy, automated empire management, strategic warfare, The tactical battles seem to be lacking. Common tactics used by the AI is massing a position with as many ships as possible. This is partly because of the way firing ranges are so small and they are 360 degrees for all ships. I really like the way ships fly in space "realistically" and dont turn on a dime like in sins, but It would really improve game play to have better tactical battles with flaking moves, crossing T's fleet formations, collisions, slow moving torpedoes, basically something similar to the tactics used by WW1 ships in battle. At the very least code force should give moders the ability to be able to implement these kinds of things into the game.

anyway, sorry for rambling.

what do you guys think?

Weapons fired only within certain angles of a ship (like in MOO2) is something I have wanted in every 4x game.. since MOO2.

But none seems to have it.

I wonder why sometimes.

One big reason is that while it's easy to implement the mechanics, it's much more difficult to make the AI use those mechanics effectively.

As for me, I'm okay with the tactical battles the way they are. More focus on economy, diplomacy and AI, please. :)

(Yes, I realize it must be annoying as a dev to hear such conflicting requests.)

I was jsut about to post similar topic.

Yeah, for sure we need more tactical battles. The game is great, but battles are not really that interesting. It's great to have great economical/research/exploration/design gameplay, but we need better tactical battles.

I just hate the whole "just choose a bunch of units and point them at the enemy unit and see what happens" gameplay.

I think formations should be introduced where ships would hold their place in it. Then you could have weapons arcs, have sectional shields (so you can choose which ones to target), special abilities (eg. area weapons, emp disabling, etc) could play more part.

I think an expansion should concetrate on tactical gameplay and not on pirates (or whatever else) because battles are such a large part of gameplay.

DW is a great game, but tactical gameplay is not on the level of the rest of the game.
